  1. SportWest WA Sports Star of the Year: Ben O’Connor and Hannah Green complete list of nominees SportWest WA Sports Star of the Year: Ben O’Connor and Hannah Green complete list of nominees An Aussie Tour de Force and a mastery of the greens have Ben O’Connor and Hannah Green firmly in contention for the SportWest WA Sports Star of the Year award. They join Olympic champions Nina Kennedy and Matt Wearn along with swimmer Iona Anderson, cricketer Mitch Marsh, *********** water polo captain Zoe Arancini, surfer Jack Robinson, dual Brownlow Medallist Patrick Cripps, netballer Sophie Garbin, Diver Maddison Keeney and tennis star Matt Ebden on the shortlist for the prestigious award. While Green couldn’t quite reach Olympic glory, narrowly missing out on a medal for the second games in a row, finishing one shot off the podium in Paris, she established herself among the golfing elite in 2024. A previous Sport West WA Sport Star of the Year winner in 2019, Green laid down an early maker claiming a dramatic HSBC Women’s World Championship in Singapore to win her fourth LPGA Tour title in just her second start of the season. Trailing by two strokes with three holes to play she reeled off three straight birdies including a monster 40-foot putt on the 18th to steal the title. She then defended her JM Eagle LA Championship in April before completing a wire-to-wire win at the BMW Ladies Championship in South Korea. In doing so she became just the third *********** after World Golf Hall of Famers Karrie Webb and Jan Stephenson to win three LGPA events in a single season reaching a career-high 5th in the world. With six top 10 finished from her 20 starts Green was awarded a second Greg Norman Medal to cap off an outstanding season. Ben O’Connor made the big call last year to sit out the Tour de France but it worked wonders for the 29-year-old who had struggled to replicate the heights of his fourth-place finish in 2021. Without the pressure of the boiler room that is the Tour, O’Connor looked refreshed claiming stage six of the Vuelta a Espana giving him a stage win at all three grand tours. It also put him in the red jersey as he came desperately close to becoming just the third *********** to win a Grand Tour before star Primoz Roglic wrested it back in a brutal stage 19 climb. He held on for second becoming just the fifth *********** to finish on the general classification podium at a Grand Tour. More second places followed at the UAE and Tour of the Alps before achieving his best-ever finish at the Giro d’Italia taking fourth missing the podium by less than two minutes. Camera IconThe overall ranking leader, Team Decathlon-AG2R La Mondiale’s Ben O’Connor, puts his red jersey on. Credit: CRISTINA QUICLER/AFP His consistency lifted him to fourth in the 2024 UCI rider rankings with O’Connor saying ‘it was hard to beat’ this year in terms of results. O’Connor has not given up on a crack at another Tour de France as he switches to ***********-based Team Jayco-AlUla for this year. The winner of the Sports West WA Sport Star of the Year will be announced on February 6 in a presentation at Optus Stadium. 2. University of Mississippi official to retire University of Mississippi official to retire MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Dr. Charlotte Pegues, Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs at the University of Mississippi, is retiring. The university shared the news Friday. They say they will start a national search for the position and hope to identify a new leader before the next academic year. “Thank you to Dr. Pegues for her years of service,” Provost Noel Wilkin said in a statement shared with the campus. University of Mississippi official charged with animal cruelty Last September, Pegues was charged in an indictment with multiple counts of animal cruelty after officers in Lafayette County said they found dead and malnourished dogs at a home. She was placed on leave by the university at that time. Her attorney denied she was guilty of the charges. The status of those charges was unclear Saturday. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. 4. WA election: The state poll that could shape the race for The Lodge WA election: The state poll that could shape the race for The Lodge Western Australia’s Labor government is on track to retain power at the state election, dashing hopes of a comeback by the conservative opposition. Analysts say the Liberal and National parties could regain previously held blue-ribbon seats at the March 8 poll but are unlikely to secure enough to oust Labor premier Roger Cook. Labor holds 53 seats in the lower house with the Liberals and Nationals holding three each. To win government the conservative parties would need to pull off an extraordinary turnaround, political analyst John Phillimore said. “Labor won by so much last time, almost everybody’s expectation is they will win,” said Professor Phillimore, the executive director of Curtin University’s John Curtin Institute of Public Policy. “There haven’t been any major scandals and they haven’t caused too much upset to too many people.” Prof Phillimore said Labor would undoubtedly lose some seats to the Liberal-National alliance but it would still have a “comfortable” victory. “It’s really whether or not they come back to where they were in 2017, which was at the time a massive victory, or will they go back to a much more closely-fought election,” he told AAP. Labor’s 2017 victory was the party’s biggest in the state’s history at that time, claiming 41 seats to the conservatives’ 18. That result was surpassed in 2021 when then-premier Mark McGowan led Labor to an unprecedented landslide victory, primarily due to the party’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic and its closed border policy. “To win the election, the (Liberal and Nationals have) to between them effectively win 25 seats,” Prof Phillimore said. “That just seems far too many steps for them to take.” Political commentator Peter Kennedy said the Libby Mettam-led WA Liberals must regain the blue ribbon seats of Nedlands, Churchlands, Bateman and South Perth, which were lost in 2021. “The Liberals would be in deep trouble if they couldn’t make significant inroads, particularly by winning back those formerly safe seats,” the Notre Dame University adjunct professor said. He said Labor could lose 14 seats, “perhaps even a bit more”. “A lot of those former Liberals who voted for Labor because it was led by Mark McGowan last time around, they’ll go back to the fold and that will help the Liberals in their recovery,” Mr Kennedy said. “(But the) Liberals still have to do a lot more work to regain that lost ground.” During early campaigning, the conservatives have targeted the Cook government’s handling of WA’s booming economy and large infrastructure projects, along with crime rates, power outages and health services. But inflation and housing supply are the top issues on WA voters’ minds, Mr Kennedy said. “The cost of living is the number one issue, then there’s the issue of housing (prices which) have gone through the roof, plus rental prices have gone through the roof as well,” he said. Mr Cook and his ministers have been travelling around the state for several months making dozens of election promises off the back of another massive surplus. The measures include cost of living relief and providing more services and infrastructure to further develop Labor’s vision for the state. The ballot result will be closely watched in Canberra ahead of a federal election which must be held by May 17. The 2022 federal election saw a huge swing away from the Liberal Party in WA, with Labor picking up four seats. Both major parties will be hoping they poll strongly at a state level as WA could be the key to winning the federal election. “The one thing that (federal) Labor’s got going for it, it does seem that most of the polling has shown that in WA at least, its vote is holding up better than it is in other states,” Prof Phillimore said. “Maybe all these visits by (Prime Minister) Anthony Albanese, which he talks about endlessly, is having an effect, but it won’t take much for him to lose two seats.” The Cook government enters the caretaker ******* on Wednesday when official campaigning will start. 7. Real Madrid’s winning steak ended in shock La Liga loss Real Madrid’s winning steak ended in shock La Liga loss Real Madrid’s winning run has ended in stunning fashion with a 1-0 loss to relegation-threatened Espanyol in La Liga. Defender Carlos Romero’s late goal beat the La Liga leader and moved Espanyol out of the bottom three. Espanyol inched two points clear of the drop zone, while Madrid’s lead was cut to one point after Atletico Madrid beat Mallorca 2-0 earlier on Saturday. Madrid, who found out on Friday that they will face Manchester City in the Champions League knockout playoff round, travelled to Espanyol with 10 victories in their last 11 matches in all competitions. They dominated and Vinícius Júnior thought he gave the visitors the lead in the 21st minute but it was ruled out due to a foul by Kylian Mbappé on Espanyol midfielder Pol Lozano. Madrid were made to pay for their missed opportunities five minutes from time when Romero volleyed in Omar El Hilali’s cross, much to the home fans’ raucous – and surprised – delight. Atletico went into their match against seventh-placed Mallorca having lost both of their last two league matches and with only two wins in their last four games after a run of 15 consecutive victories. They took the lead in the 26th minute when Giuliano Simeone sprinted down the right before rolling the ball across the edge of the area for Samuel Lino to fire into the bottom right corner. Rodrigo Riquelme hit the crossbar with a free kick two minutes from time and provided the through ball for substitute Antoine Griezmann to run onto and delightfully chip the goalkeeper and seal the match in stoppages. Fifth-placed Villarreal crushed bottom club Real Valladolid 5-1 and Getafe drew with Sevilla 0-0. No Man’s Sky is back in Steam’s top-sellers chart after massive update: “This is humbling” No Man’s Sky is back in Steam’s top-sellers chart after massive update: “This is humbling” JEECE64d ago No Man’s Sky is such a great example of gamers just creating a narrative and ignoring all contrary evidence. Even if you buy the idea that Hello Games falsely advertised the game in the first year or so that it was being developed and advertised, you could literally watch long previews in the months before launch that showed what the game was going to be. So even if they “lied” in 2013-2015, you really couldn’t claim to be deceived by that in Fall 2016 when you could watch long previews that Spring. The whole “they promised Destiny style multiplayer” is the worst lie of all. As @thorstein points out, Hello Games was going out of its way two years prior to launch to get people NOT to think of NMS as a multiplayer game. Screenshots of the article he referenced can be read here: It’s also astounding to me that people assumed that everyone in the entire world was going to be on the same server. That’s like joining a random server in COD while your friend is on the same map on another server, going to the same location, and getting mad at Activision because you didn’t find your friend. 11. Russian drone and missile attacks kill 12: Ukraine Russian drone and missile attacks kill 12: Ukraine Russia has launched a barrage of drones and missiles on Ukraine, killing 12 people and damaging dozens of residential buildings as well as energy infrastructure across the country, Ukrainian officials say. Ukraine’s Emergency Services said that a Russian missile struck a residential building in the central city of Poltava, killing eight people. Emergency services had earlier reported 17 injured, including four children. Pictures posted on the Telegram messaging app showed the building with several top floors smashed and thick columns of smoke rising into the sky. Firefighters and dozens of rescuers were searching through the rubble and carrying the dead out on stretchers. One person was killed and four were wounded in the city of Kharkiv in the northeast in a drone attack, the mayor said. Three police officers were killed during the attacks as they patrolled streets in a village in the northeastern region of Sumy, regional officials said. “Last night Russia attacked our cities using various types of weapons: missiles, attack drones, and aerial bombs,” President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said, adding damage was caused in six regions. “Each such terrorist attack proves that we need more support in defending ourselves against Russian terror. Every air defence system, every anti-missile weapon, saves lives,” he said on the Telegram app. The Ukrainian air force said Russian forces launched 123 drones and more than 40 missiles. Its air defence units shot down 56 of the drones and redirected 61, it said. The air force provided no figures on how many missiles were intercepted. In Poltava, about 120km from the Russian border, about 18 apartment buildings, a kindergarten and energy infrastructure were damaged, city authorities said. Ukrainian officials said that damage was also registered in the city of Zaporizhzhia in the southeast, Kharkiv and Sumy regions in the northeast, and Khmelnytskyi in the west. Kharkiv Governor Oleh Syniehubov said Russian forces used six missiles and 17 Shahed drones to target gas infrastructure and other facilities. Russia’s Defence Ministry said that its forces had launched attacks aimed at Ukraine’s gas and other energy infrastructure and had shot down 108 Ukrainian drones in the last 24 hours, Russian news agencies reported. Since March 2024, Russia has launched multiple missile and drone attacks on Ukraine’s power sector and other energy infrastructure, knocking out about half of the country’s available generating capacity and forcing rolling blackouts. As the war approaches its three-year mark this month and Russian forces make small but steady gains in eastern Ukraine, edging closer to the strategic logistic hub of Pokrovsk, both sides are using drones to hit infrastructure and disrupt military supply lines. 12. How much of ‘National Lampoon’s Vacation’ was actually filmed in St. Louis? How much of ‘National Lampoon’s Vacation’ was actually filmed in St. Louis? ST. LOUIS – One of the most memorable 1980s cult classics to feature St. Louis, albeit briefly, is “National Lampoon’s Vacation.” While the city plays only a small role in the movie, the amount of it acutally filmed in St. Louis is even smaller. Starring Chevy Chase as Clark Griswold, the 1983 comedy followed the misadventures of the Griswold family on their road trip from Chicago to the fictional Wally World amusement park in California. St. Louis in “National Lampoon’s Vacation” Near the early-middle stages of the movie, there are a few key scenes that represent the Griswold’s journey through the St. Louis region… In broad daylight, the family crosses state lines from Illinois into Missouri by car. Clark excitedly points out the Gateway Arch and Mississippi River during the drive. The family appears to merge onto Interstate 70 from Interstate 55, prompting Clark’s wife Ellen to question the route. At night, the family seems lost while driving through an unfamiliar area, which is widely assumed to portray East St. Louis, Illinois. Clark stops to ask for directions, only for his car’s hubcaps to be stolen while he receives unhelpful guidance, then scrambles to leave town. These key moments suggest two primary locations: One as the family navigates the interstates near the heart of Downtown St. Louis and another often associated with East St. Louis, Illinois. How much of this was filmed in St. Louis? According to IMBD, an online database for movie productions, filming locations for “Vacation” included St. Louis, Missouri, but only exterior shots. Meanwhile, East St. Louis, Illinois, was not listed among filming locations. Chevy Chase, Beverly D’Angelo and their kids wave goodbye in a scene from the film ‘Vacation’, 1983. (Photo by Warner Brothers/Getty Images) This data suggests that while real footage of the family’s car was captured crossing into Missouri, the interior car scenes and the nighttime sequences were shot elsewhere. There are two distinguished clips of St. Louis and the Griswold’s family car on interstates, each around 10-15 seconds, as the car crosses state lines. Aside from that, there is no other confirmed or obvious footage of St. Louis in the movie. The “East” St. Louis scene One interesting detail: According to IMDb, an original cut of the movie included an on-screen text label reading “East St. Louis” as the Griswold family gets lost. However, filmmakers reportedly intended for this to refer to the eastern part of the city of St. Louis, Missouri, rather than the city of East St. Louis, Illinois, according to IMDb’s “Goofs” page for the movie. Geographically speaking, that makes some sense. If the family had actually crossed back into East St. Louis, Illinois, from St. Louis, Missouri, they would have been heading east, while their intended target (California) is much further west. Additionally, IMBd further notes one scene of being depcited in St. Louis as the Town House Motel, which is actually in Glendale, California. The motel name isn’t explicitly involved in the scene, unlike a spot called “Ron Frazier’s Downtown Bar.” Filmmakers say that Ron Frazier is an uncredited propmaker foreman for the film, though it’s unclear whether the bar was ever a real location of simply a set piece. As for the “East” St. Louis scene itself, Clark attempts to ask two different people for directions. One shouts an expletive back at him, and another requests $5 in exchange for help. The latter direction-giver initially points toward a sign advertising “rib tips” before changing course, directing Clark toward a Ford Torino that belongs to his cousin Jackie. As Clark and his family process the conversation, a group of people swiftly remove all four hubcaps from his car, adding to the family’s growing string of misfortunes. In 2009, a Riverfront Times report revisited the scene that cemented East St. Louis’ reputation in pop culture, despite the fact it wasn’t filmed there. The report highlighted how the scene contributed to negative stereotypes associated with East St. Louis. It also included remarks of regret from the film’s director, Harold Ramis, who once said, “I apologize for the whole scene.” Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Ange’s wounded Spurs poised to sign defender Danso Ange’s wounded Spurs poised to sign defender Danso Ange Postecoglou’s injury-wracked Tottenham are set to win the race to sign Lens centre-back Kevin Danso. Danso, 26, has attracted plenty of interest in the January transfer window and was reportedly close to joining Spurs’ Premier League rivals Wolves. However, with defender Radu Dragusin the latest Tottenham player to suffer an injury, it is understood the north London club have moved quickly to recruit Danso in a deal set to be worth 25 million euros ($A41.6m). Danso is no stranger to English football, having started out in the MK Dons academy before joining Augsburg as a teenager. An unsuccessful loan spell at Southampton followed in the 2019-20 campaign, but over the last few years he has established himself as an Austria international and impressed with Lens. After 128 appearances for the Ligue 1 outfit, Danso is now expected to join Tottenham to boost Postecoglou’s depleted squad who have slumped to 16th on the Premier League ladder. 15. Here’s what to do with your retirement savings in a market sell-off Here’s what to do with your retirement savings in a market sell-off The stock market was smacked down by news Monday that ******** artificial intelligence startup DeepSeek has developed more efficient AI models that don’t rely on leading chipmakers like Nvidia. The ensuing global tech stock belly flop, caused by angst about America’s role in the AI sector and future profitability, ran amok for most of the day. This is not the kind of news retirement savers want to hear — ever. The tech-laden Nasdaq Composite (^IXIC) fell more than 3%. The S&P 500 (^GSPC) dropped almost 1.5%. The blue-chip Dow Jones Industrial Average (^DJI), which is less dependent on tech stocks, pushed back against the rattled markets, edging up more than 0.6%. AI pacesetter Nvidia’s (NVDA) shares sank close to 17%. Shares of Microsoft (MSFT) fell more than 2%. Google parent Alphabet (GOOG, GOOGL) and Amazon (AMZN) also slipped as tech stocks across the board bobbled. I talked to several experts about whether it’s best to stay the course or consider making some adjustments to retirement-targeted holdings. Here’s what other experts say about managing your retirement savings when the markets are shaky. The truth is that retirement savers can’t afford to be rash. Building wealth is a long-term process. “In times of stock market volatility, I tell my clients that it’s crucial to remember that such fluctuations are a natural part of investing,” Ryan Haiss, a certified financial planner at Flynn Zito Capital Management in Garden City, N.Y., told Yahoo Finance. If you’re tempted to do something major, tap the brakes. It’s pretty tough to find the best time to sell and buy stocks. If you get out when markets dip, you might very well miss out on the upside when they get rolling again. The ******* issue is not what goes down this week, but what happened over the last year. The reality is that stocks do have market risk, but even those of you close to retirement or retired should stay invested in stocks to some degree in order to benefit from the upside over time. If you’re 65, you could have two decades or more of living ahead of you and you’ll want that potential boost. “Stay calm is my mantra,” Justin Smith, a certified financial planner with Savant Wealth Management in Phoenix, Ariz., told Yahoo Finance. Smith tells his clients “to focus on what we can control, such as their retirement plan and cash holdings, and acknowledge that much of this is out of our control.” Read more: Retirement planning: A step-by-step guide This embedded content is not available in your region. If you’re setting money aside automatically in your employer-sponsored retirement plan, or you’re making automatic contributions to a Roth IRA or a traditional IRA and are years from retirement, take a breath. You’re constantly investing in your retirement accounts when the market is soaring and when it’s down, and that means the return on your investments evens out over the long run, especially when you have decades of runway ahead. And if you’re like many retirement savers, you have bought into the simplicity of target-date retirement funds so your account is automatically adjusting for market gyrations. With a target-date retirement fund, you select the year you’d like to retire and buy a mutual fund with that year in its name (like Target 2044). The fund manager then splits up your investment between stocks and bonds, changing that division to a more conservative blend as the target date looms, or soon after. It’s fine for younger savers with decades until retirement to sit tight and wait it out. In fact, stop looking at your account balances right now until things quiet down again. But for those closer to retirement age, that might not be best. “The mantra to do nothing when the market drops isn’t necessarily great advice for people approaching retirement,” Christine Benz, Morningstar’s director of personal finance, told Yahoo Finance. “It has been very easy to let stocks ride during their extended run over the past decade, and people’s portfolios are the better for it,” she said. “But if they haven’t rebalanced and taken risk out of their portfolio by lightening up on stocks, it’s still reasonable to do that, even though stocks have dropped a bit.” Have a question about about retirement? Personal finances? Anything career-related? Drop Kerry Hannon a note. Her advice: Pre-retirees and retirees should hold five to 10 years’ worth of anticipated portfolio withdrawals in a combination of cash and high-quality bonds. “Those assets provide a bulwark against having to withdraw from stock assets if stocks encounter a sustained downturn,” she said. “And the good news is that yields on bonds and cash, while they’ve declined a bit recently in expectation of Fed rate cuts, are still quite decent relative to where they were a few years ago.” In fact, some certificates of deposit and high-yield savings accounts are paying more than 4%. The most appealing CD rates — offered mostly by online banks — were recently hovering around 4.7% for a one-year certificate. Many retirees want a more conservative asset mix as they age so they don’t have to get that anxious feeling when the stock market slides. That’s why near-retirees and retirees, in particular, who haven’t revisited their asset allocations for a while should consider doing so, Benz said. Financial advisers generally suggest rebalancing (adjusting the mix of your stocks and bonds) whenever your portfolio gets more than 7% to 10% away from your original asset allocation, which was constructed to match your time horizon, risk tolerance, and financial goals. To roughly determine what percentage of your portfolio should be in stocks, subtract your age from 110. So, a 60-year-old would have 50% in stocks and the rest in bonds and cash. (Getty Creative) This is an opportune time to step back and look at your overall retirement account investments and how they are allocated and consider some fine-tuning. If having too big a chunk of your savings invested in stocks makes you a hot mess when markets swing, then you might consider paring those holdings back a bit. “If this decline has you feeling your investments are too aggressive, it’s a good time to revisit your portfolio allocation,” Haiss said. “However, you may want to hold off on making any changes until the market recovers.” While I held off on bothering my adviser this time, I make it a point to meet with her throughout the year to review allocations and revisit my overall retirement outlook and risk tolerance. In our last meeting, in fact, we both marveled at how the S&P 500 has nearly doubled since the spring of 2020. I highly recommend you do the same with your financial planner. You might decide to stay on course or make a very minor tweak, so when things go haywire in the market — and they will from time to time — you’ll feel less fearful. 17. Four dead in Russian strike on Kursk school, Ukraine says Four dead in Russian strike on Kursk school, Ukraine says President Volodymyr Zelensky says Moscow has bombed a boarding school in Ukrainian-occupied Russia where civilians were sheltering and preparing to evacuate. The Ukrainian army said four people were killed and dozens – many of them elderly – were injured in the town of Sudzha in the Kursk region, which has been under Ukrainian control for five months. More than 80 people are reported to have been rescued from the building. The BBC has not been able to confirm Ukraine’s claim that it was a deliberate Russian attack using a guided aerial bomb. Moscow has not commented. Zelensky posted on X that the incident exposed Russia as “a state devoid of civility”. “This is how Russia wages war – Sudzha, Kursk region, Russian territory, a boarding school with civilians preparing to evacuate,” he wrote. “A Russian aerial bomb. They destroyed the building even though dozens of civilians were there.” The Ukrainian army’s general staff posted on Telegram that four people had died and that 84 civilians were rescued, adding that “the strike was carried out on purpose”. Ukraine launched a lightning thrust into the Russian oblast of Kursk last August, taking Russian border guards by surprise. The government in Kyiv made it clear at the time that it had no intention of holding on to the territory seized, merely to use it as a bargaining chip in future peace negotiations. Zelensky likened Saturday’s strike to “how Russia waged war against Chechnya decades ago. They killed Syrians the same way. Russian bombs destroy Ukrainian homes the same way”. While there has been no official statement from the Kremlin, at least one unofficial Russian military blogger claimed Ukrainian forces were behind the strike. 19. Former Federal Reserve adviser indicted and arrested for alleged espionage in dealings with China Former Federal Reserve adviser indicted and arrested for alleged espionage in dealings with China Federal authorities have arrested a former Federal Reserve senior adviser for allegedly giving inside economic information to China. A grand jury indictment accuses John Harold Rogers, 63, of Vienna, Virginia, of stealing Federal Reserve trade secrets and selling them to ******** intelligence officials for at least $450,000 by posing as a university professor in China. He is also accused of lying to Federal Reserve investigators and Consumer Financial Protection Bureau officials. The Department of Justice announced Rogers’ indictment and arrest on Friday, the same day he made his first appearance before a Washington court. Rogers is being held without bond and is scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday, according to court records. Trusted news and daily delights, right in your inbox See for yourself — The Yodel is the go-to source for daily news, entertainment and feel-good stories. Jonathan Gitlen, an attorney for Rogers, said via email Saturday that “Dr. Rogers denies the allegations as set forth in the indictment.” Rogers will say more “at a later date,” Gitlen said. Assistant Director Kevin Vorndran of the FBI Counterintelligence Division said in a statement that Rogers “betrayed his country while employed at the Federal Reserve by providing restricted U.S. financial and economic information to ******** government intelligence officers.” The information, Vorndran continued, “could allow adversaries to illegally gain a strategic economic advantage at the expense of the U.S.” The Justice Department said the information “could allow China to manipulate the U.S. market” in a manner similar to insider trading. The department noted that China, as of October 2024, held about $816 billion in U.S. foreign debt and that ******** financial players could benefit from inside knowledge of U.S. economic policy, such as advance notice of federal funds rate changes, when making decisions about buying and selling U.S. debt instruments. Rogers, a U.S. citizen with a doctorate in economics, worked for the Federal Reserve from 2010 until 2021, according to the indictment. According to the indictment, Rogers, a U.S. citizen with a Ph.D. in economics, worked as a Senior Adviser in FRB’s Division of International Finance of the FRB from 2010 until 2021, where he would have had access to a range of classified information. Prosecutors allege that Rogers and two ******** co-conspirators began communicating as early as 2013. The indictment asserts that Rogers later forwarded protected information to his personal email or made print copies to pass along to his co-conspirators. The cache allegedly included proprietary economic data and analysis, briefing books written for Federal Reserve governors, details of Federal Open Market Committee deliberations and future announcements, and accounts of conversations about tariffs targeted at China, according to the indictment. Rogers is accused of meeting co-conspirators in China for multiple visits, under the guise of him being an academic instructor teaching them as students. The indictment alleges that in 2023, Rogers received $450,000 as a part-time professor at a ******** university. 20. Senior FBI official forcefully resisted Trump administration firings Senior FBI official forcefully resisted Trump administration firings Acting FBI Director Brian Driscoll on Friday refused a Justice Department order that he assist in the firing of agents involved in Jan. 6 riot cases, pushing back so forcefully that some FBI officials feared he would be dismissed, multiple current and former FBI officials told NBC News. The Justice Department ultimately did not dismiss Driscoll. He sent out a memo to the workforce Friday night explaining that he had been ordered to remove eight senior FBI executives and turn over the names of every FBI employee involved in Capitol riot cases. The eight executives have been forced out but Driscoll did not say in the memo whether he would turn over the broader list of Jan. 6-related names — a list that he noted encompasses thousands of FBI employees, including him. “As we’ve said since the moment we agreed to take on these roles, we are going to follow the law, follow FBI policy, and do what’s in the best interest of the workforce and the American people — always,” Driscoll, a former member of the FBI’s elite hostage rescue team, wrote. In a message that circulated widely among bureau personnel, an FBI agent summarized what happened as: “Bottom line — DOJ came over and wanted to fire a bunch of J6 agents. Driscoll is an absolute stud. Held his ground and told WH proxy, DOJ, to F— Off.” The FBI and the Justice Department declined to comment. A senior FBI official disputed the accounts of the current and former officials saying, “It’s not true.” A former FBI official who knows Driscoll well said, “He pushed back hard.” Agents who worked on Jan. 6 cases targeted It’s not known whether anyone other than the eight senior FBI executives have been separated from the bureau. One official familiar with the matter said that top Trump administration officials have made it clear that they want at least some of the FBI agents who pursued Jan. 6 cases to be fired, just as multiple DOJ prosecutors involved with the Jan. 6 prosecutions were fired. The official said the Trump administration wants this to happen quickly but has been told by FBI officials that misconduct allegations at the bureau involve a formal review process. The accounts of Driscoll’s actions shed new light on a chaotic series of events over the last 48 hours that began with the news that the Trump administration was seeking to purge the top ranks of the FBI’s career civil servants. “Late this afternoon, I received a memo from the acting Deputy Attorney General notifying me that eight senior FBI executives are to be terminated by specific dates, unless these employees have retired beforehand,” Driscoll wrote. “I have been personally in touch with each of these impacted employees.” He said in the memo that he had also been directed to provide the DOJ by noon on Tuesday a list of all FBI employees involved in Capitol riot cases, and also those involved in a case against a ****** leader. No one contacted by NBC News had a sense of the new administration’s interest in the ****** case, but the focus on Jan. 6 was clear. The Trump administration apparently believes that all of the Jan. 6 cases should not have been brought. Since it was the largest criminal investigation in U.S. history, thousands of FBI personnel were involved, as Driscoll acknowledged in his memo. “We understand that this request encompasses thousands of employees across the country who have supported these investigative efforts,” he wrote. “I am one of those employees, as is acting Deputy Director (Rob) Kissane.” FBI agents encouraged FBI agents were heartened by Driscoll’s memo, a source said, which many saw as an attempt by Driscoll to make the workforce and the public aware of what he was being asked to do. “He was trying to do right by the workforce,” one person familiar with the thinking of agents told NBC News. “He’s putting it in writing and naming names.” A separate DOJ memo obtained by NBC News identified the employees who were forced out. The list included four top FBI managers: Robert Wells, who oversaw the national security branch; Ryan Young, of the intelligence branch; Robert Nordwall, of criminal and cyber response; Jackie Maguire, of science and technology. All of those people were eligible to retire and many of them did so. The memo also identified two heads of field offices, Jeffrey Veltri in Miami and David Sundberg in Washington, D.C. Also on the list was Dena Perkins, an acting section chief in the security division who was involved in a controversial disciplinary proceeding against a conservative FBI agent. The list did not include Spencer Evans, the special agent in charge in Las Vegas, who sent a message to colleagues on Friday that he was being dismissed by FBI headquarters. “I was given no rationale for this decision, which, as you might imagine, has come as a shock.” It’s unclear whether he has now been given a reprieve. Nor did the list include executive assistant director Arlene Gaylord, a 33-year FBI veteran who was not retirement-eligible and requested that she be allowed to work in another assignment until she did so. An FBI official familiar with the matter said she had been accommodated. Experts say the firings are ******** Legal experts said that few, if any, of the firings carried out so far by the Trump administration have been legal under civil service laws because the employees were not afforded due process. The Trump White House argues, though, that the president has the absolute right to fire anyone he wishes in the executive branch. The Supreme Court has ruled that federal employees have a right to a hearing before they are disciplined or terminated. Joyce Vance, a former U.S. attorney and NBC News legal contributor, called the firings ********. “Career federal employees can be fired for conduct or performance issues, not because they failed to demonstrate political loyalty to the current incumbent of the White House,” said Vance. “Trump ignored controlling law and regulations to do this, and unless the Supreme Court changes their interpretation, any firing of permanent members of the civil service should not stand.” Even if some of the employees sue and win, they said their public service careers have been irreparably damaged, if not ended. One of the Jan. 6 prosecutors fired on Friday told NBC News that they “did nothing wrong” and had no regrets about their work. The person, who asked not to named due to fear of retaliation, said it was discouraging to be fired after seeing Trump pardon violent rioters who attacked police officers. “We’ve all been looking over our shoulders, like, ‘Is this the day that we’re gonna get fired?’ Because we were doing our jobs?” the fired prosecutor told NBC News. “We’ve been forced to dismiss all of the cases that we’ve been working on of all these people that were very violent offenders. It’s been awful.” Current and former FBI agents say the purge at the bureau has had a shattering effect on the morale, sending a message that agents who work on cases that anger someone in the Trump administration could be targeted. “Who right now would want to work on a case that would get them crosswise with the administration?” one former FBI official asked. “They will come after you.” Source link #Senior #FBI #official #forcefully #resisted #Trump #administration #firings Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  21. She Was Chosen to Help Rebuild Notre-Dame. Then Fire Hit Her Adopted City, Too. She Was Chosen to Help Rebuild Notre-Dame. Then Fire Hit Her Adopted City, Too. The story of Notre-Dame’s restoration starts with a fire, as Claire Tabouret is well aware. Officials in France have chosen her, a Frenchwoman who, for the last 10 years, has called Los Angeles home, to help bring its $900 million, yearslong resurrection project to the finish line. She will create stained glass windows in several of the southern bays. And as Tabouret has watched the most destructive fires in Los Angeles history burn her adopted hometown, the parallels have become inescapable. It all “starts with a fire, which starts a conversation,” she said — a conversation about how “to transform this destruction into a new rebirth, new life.” The little piece of Notre-Dame’s rebirth that Tabouret, 43, is contributing to is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity: Add a contemporary touch to an almost 1,000-year old cathedral. The only reason Tabouret is getting this chance is because a fire engulfed the cathedral’s roof and spire in 2019. Laurent Ulrich, the archbishop of Paris, then raised the idea of installing new stained glass windows, and, on a visit to the construction site in 2023, President Emmanuel Macron of France signed off. The French culture ministry, he said, would run a yearlong competition to pick the artist who would design them. The windows, the ministry said, would fill six of the seven chapels on the side of the nave, joining one figurative window in one of the chapels that would remain. Officials said the commission was not to replace anything that had been lost, but to give the cathedral a flavor of the contemporary gesture that had been promised in the wake of the fire. Preservationists lodged vociferous objections, in part because the windows being replaced — from the 19th-century renovation orchestrated by Eugène Emmanuel Viollet-le-Duc — had survived the fire. (Other windows in the cathedral, including celebrated rose windows, remain intact.) “I never applied for any competitions before,” Tabouret said in an interview. “And I think when I saw this, I was like, ‘OK, if I’m going to try once in my life to apply for something, it should be this. Because there’s nothing *******, more historic or incredible.” Tabouret grew up in the South of France and knew even as a child that she wanted to be a painter. She fed her interest with books filled with 19th-century landscapes. And around the time she turned 18, she took the train to Paris, where she was admitted to the venerated École des Beaux-Arts. She visited New York as an exchange student at the Cooper Union before heading back to Paris, where she modeled for art classes, worked as a telemarketer and waited tables to stay afloat. One day in 2013, the French billionaire businessman and collector François Pinault noticed one of her paintings, she said. He bought all of her work at the show. “The next morning my life was different,” she said. A little more than a year later, she moved to Los Angeles, where she quickly discovered one of of the city’s core charms: “That feeling that you can be in a town, but also be very solitary,” she said. Since then, much of her work has been filled with figures: sometimes miners, sometimes wrestlers, sometimes children (who are sometimes in groups and sometimes wearing makeup), sometimes young women and sometimes herself. Her figures are often filled with “body language” and “inside feelings,” as she put it, and they have been exhibited in Paris, Los Angeles, London, Tokyo and elsewhere. A painting of young debutantes in blue dresses sold at auction for $870,000 in 2021, and several of her other works have also sold for hundreds of thousands of dollars. “Claire has always kind of taken from her personal life as she creates her paintings. But they transcend her personal narrative,” said Davida Nemeroff, the owner of Night Gallery in Los Angeles, which will host an exhibition of Tabouret’s new work (“Moonlight Shadow”) from Feb. 15 to March 29. “We can all see ourselves in the paintings, which I think is why they’re so powerful and also why I think she’s such great candidate to do the Notre-Dame project.” Tabouret, whose dark sweater and jeans were splattered with paint on a recent weekday, knows that some stiffly oppose her new work replacing cherished windows. But she considers herself a researcher at heart. And she knows Notre-Dame’s history. She notes that it was built long before the 19th century, when the last renovation (which preservationists embrace) occurred. And even at its founding hundreds of years earlier, a church at the site was purposely destroyed so its stones could be used to build something better. “The idea of using and reusing and transforming is part of the history of this building,” she said. “Each renovation does modify what was before. So it would be kind of weird to freeze it in time.” “We have to trust our art,” she added, “the same way every century before us trusted our artists.” A committee running the competition Tabouret ultimately won gave the final eight contenders a specific assignment with specific parameters: Paint the Pentecost. Each large window, with its many panels, must represent one sentence from the ******; follow the story; make it figurative work; when considering colors, respect the beautiful, neutral white light; whatever you make should be easily understood. In Tabouret’s Los Angeles studio, her vibrant sketches of each of the six windows were displayed on the wall and on the floor. They were accompanied by pieces that zoomed in on some of the human faces offering a life-size, more detailed look at how the work will eventually appear inside the cathedral. She had made her work on plexiglass. And then, using a press, Tabouret created the prints on paper of each design. The ink displayed differently on each print, offering insights into color, texture and shadows. “There is an element of unpredictability and surprise,” she said. “Like playing between what you can actually control and what you can’t.” One of the six windows she had sketched depicts “tongues of fire,” Tabouret said. It is the reason officials chose the Pentecost and the passages they did, she said. They wanted to tie the project to the fire that forced the restoration. At this, Tabouret took a moment to consider the fires in Los Angeles that have burned not far from her studio and the life she has created here for herself and her family. Across the studio, a large painting of a group of children leaned against the wall. Tabouret had recently pulled it out from storage and had decided to spritz it with blue-gray liquid acrylic paint, without quite knowing why. She had added a blanket over the children, too. Now, she said, the streaks created by the spray suddenly looked to her like ash. The blanket felt like a form of protection. “Maybe not a lot of coincidence,” she said. “What is truly shattered for everyone in L.A. is that we did feel safe and certain,” she lamented. “It’s so densely populated here, we thought fire could never come to us.” Source link #Chosen #Rebuild #NotreDame #Fire #Hit #Adopted #City Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

  23. Judges in Jan. 6 cases and watchdog groups recoil at Justice Department’s deletion of records Judges in Jan. 6 cases and watchdog groups recoil at Justice Department’s deletion of records A decision by the acting leadership at the U.S. Justice Department to delete its public webpages and case summaries of the Jan. 6 siege at the Capitol prosecution has triggered a legal challenge from a watchdog group and blowback from a federal judge who oversaw some of the cases. The controversial decision has also drawn the ire of one of the rioters who pleaded guilty. The Justice Department had built a comprehensive database of the approximately 1,600 defendants from the U.S. Capitol attack and had produced a monthly set of reports updating the prosecution, which was the largest in the agency’s long history. Last week, the database and designated public web pages went dark, as the agency halted its prosecutions of the rioters, under orders from President Trump. The erasure of the public resources and information occurred during a ******* of transition at the agency, with confirmation votes still pending for Attorney General-nominee Pam Bondi and FBI Director-nominee Kash Patel. In an opinion issued Thursday, U.S. District court judge Paul Friedman noted the deletion of the public information by the acting Justice Department leadership. Friedman included a recent version of the lengthy database in his public ruling, which can be accessed on the federal court system’s website. The list in Friedman’s order mirrors the purged Justice Department database, listing riot defendants in alphabetical order and noting their conviction and sentences. Friedman also blistered the proclamation by Mr. Trump that the Jan. 6 prosecutions were a “national injustice perpetrated” on the American people. Friedman wrote, “The proclamation’s assertion if factually incorrect. There has been no ‘grave national injustice.’ And just because the proclamation was signed by the President does not transform up into down or down into up as if peering through the glass in ‘Alice in Wonderland.'” Citizens for Ethics and Responsibility in Washington, a D.C.-based government watchdog groups that frequently scrutinizes Mr. Trump, has issued a public letter seeking an investigation by the Justice Department’s Office of Inspector General and the Archivist of the United States to determine if the deletion of the Jan. 6 public data was a violation of law. The letter said, “The Department of Justice’s removal of this vital information about its prosecutions arising from the January 6, 2021 attack on the Capitol is consistent with President Trump’s ongoing efforts to rewrite or erase the insurrection, and also a likely violation of federal law.” The watchdog group’s letter also read, “Despite the agency’s requirement to notify the archivist of the deletion of these records, there is no indication that they reported this matter to NARA, and a list of open ‘unauthorized disposition cases’ on NARA’s website does not reveal any such reporting. Given DOJ’s apparent failure to report this matter to NARA as required by law, we are doing so now and request that NARA take appropriate action, including instructing the agency to issue a report in accordance with 36 C.F.R. § 1230.14 and § 1230.16.” Mr. Trump’s allies in Congress have been accused of their own efforts to erase the history of Jan. 6. House Republican leadership has defied a 2022 law requiring the hanging of a formal plaque on the US Capitol grounds to honor police heroes who saved the Capitol and Congress from the attack. House Speaker Mike Johnson has declined to specify if or when the plaque will ever be hung. Democrats also blasted Republicans for failing to acknowledge the Capitol Insurrection and its victims on the four-year mark of the attack, on Jan. 6, 2025. Republican leaders in the House and Senate did not hold a vigil or commemoration for the victims, which had previously been staged at the Capitol in prior years. Pam Hemphill, an Idaho woman who pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor for her role in the US Capitol breach, told CBS News that the deletion of Jan. 6 public records “is just the latest step in rewriting history for his benefit and is more proof of his utter contempt for the Rule of Law.” “I would not be shocked if he goes as far as trying to ban books and articles that document the facts about the Capitol Riot,” Hemphill said. Walkers discovered Lamduan Armitage’s half-naked body in a stream near Pen-y-ghent in 2004 and she remained unidentified for 15 years until her family saw a BBC News report and came forward. David Armitage, who had lived in Thailand since her death, was arrested earlier when he returned to the *** after the Thai authorities revoked his resident visa. North Yorkshire Police, which is investigating the death, said: “A 61-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of the ******* of Lamduan Armitage in 2004. He remains in police custody for questioning.” Richard Hill A group of walkers had posed for a picture when they noticed Lamduan’s body in the stream Mr Armitage was detained last Thursday at his house in Kanchanaburi before being transferred to the Bangkok Immigration Detention Centre. He did not file an immigration petition meaning he no longer had the right to stay in Thailand. He returned to the *** on Saturday morning and was arrested by police shortly after his arrival at Heathrow Airport, the BBC understands. The BBC has not spoken with Mr Armitage but he has previously said he was not involved in his wife’s death, according to The Sun. Mrs Armitage, nee Seekanya, became known as the Lady of the Hills during attempts to identify her after her body was found on 20 September 2004. A post-mortem examination established she had died between one and three weeks before her body was found, but it could not determine how she died. There was no sign of violence and hypothermia was ruled out, but detectives could not answer two main questions; who she was or how she met her death. A cold case review was started in 2016 and scientific advances meant police were able to piece together a more detailed picture of who she was and concluded she had been killed. Three years later there was a major breakthrough when a Thai family read about the case and believed the woman could be their daughter who vanished in 2004. Other The mother-of-three lived with her husband in Portsmouth, Rugby and Preston between 1991 and 2003 This led North Yorkshire Police to carry out DNA testing to confirm her identity.
