  1. Pregnant woman’s remains, showing signs of sacrifice, unearthed in Ecuador Pregnant woman’s remains, showing signs of sacrifice, unearthed in Ecuador A pregnant woman believed to have lived over a thousand years ago in Ecuador’s coastal region may have been part of ritual sacrifice or punishment, according to archaeologists who excavated her remains in 2022. In a study published last month by Cambridge University Press on behalf of the Society for American Archaeology, experts detailed their analysis of the remains of the young woman, dubbed Burial 10, which dated between AD 771 and AD 953. She was approximately 17 to 20 years old at the time of her death, and her hands and left leg were removed at or near the time of her death, researchers said. The young woman’s remains showed a cranial fracture and cut marks on her hand bones, which led them to hypothesize that she may have been sacrificed. “Perimortem trauma, including a cranial fracture and cutmarks on hand bones, perimortem removal of the hands and left leg, and other body manipulation suggest she was sacrificed, a rare event for coastal Ecuadorian peoples,” researchers wrote. Although human sacrifice in coastal Ecuador is rare, the positioning of the body and missing limbs suggest possible ritual significance, the study said. Her eyes were covered with two ark clam shells. There was a large green clay stone nearby and several ceramic fragments on her forehead, according to the study. Crescent-shaped spondylus mascaras, or mollusk shells, were found around the body. She was also buried with spondylus pendants and beads, known as chaquira, from various cultural traditions and periods. Several artifacts including spondylus pendants and beads were found buried with a pregnant woman who lived over a thousand years ago in coastal Ecuador. / Credit: Cambridge University Press/Society for American Archaeology The woman is believed to be part of the Manteño people, who lived along the Ecuadorian coast and survived by agriculture and seafaring, but the eye coverings were not consistent with typical Manteño burials, researchers said. The green stone represented a link between death and fertility for Valdivian burials, a different group of coastal people which predated the Manteño by nearly 2,000 years, according to experts. Mascaras were also typically linked to practices of Valdivians. “To accumulate so many artifacts required purposeful collection and curation before inclusion in this burial,” the study said. “Interpretation of this burial must ultimately consider these repeated emphases and ties to the past to understand the reasons for this enigmatic burial.” The burial also included a burnt offering placed in the thoracic cavity, researchers said. However, such rituals have been found to occur later between AD 991-1025, which would indicate that the woman’s grave was revisited and possibly used for other rituals. 5. Adrian Barich: as Brisbane prepares for the Olympics in 2032, which sport can get me into the green and gold? Adrian Barich: as Brisbane prepares for the Olympics in 2032, which sport can get me into the green and gold? Have you ever dreamt of competing for Australia at an Olympic Games? Have you ever wondered which sport would best suit your particular skill set? I’m told many of our best young athletes are currently deciding on their sporting pathway and lots are choosing Olympic sports, after Brisbane was announced as the host of the 2032 Summer Games. Sports including swimming, rowing, hockey, water polo and rugby sevens are being picked up, even ahead of the Australia’s traditionally big sports such as AFL. Kids aged 12 and over are being lured into Olympic sports by the fact that the Games are coming to Australia during their sporting lifetime. And when you consider cricket, lacrosse and netball may be played in Brisbane, alongside squash and surfing, well, you get the picture. Personally, I think the Games’ organisers should add AFL in 2032, as surely we’d be guaranteed of a gold medal. That brings me to the main subject of my column: if you started training today, what sport do you think you could qualify for in Brisbane? I conducted a little poll and found that many people thought they could easily master sports such as air rifle or air pistol in a relatively short ******* of time. Other “easier” sports mentioned were archery, badminton, table tennis and fencing. Golf would be one of my picks, alongside shot-put. After extensive research I also discovered the “10,000 hour theory” which suggests that to become an expert in any given skill, a person just needs to practise deliberately for about 10,000 hours. Doing the maths, with the Brisbane Games seven years away, I worked out that I’d probably need to become an “expert” within five years to qualify in time for the Olympics, so I would need to increase my training load to 40 hours a week for that *******. That’s six hours a day, seven days a week. I generally get home from work at Seven at about 7pm so if I eat dinner at work, I could practise until 10pm, then get up at 5am and practise again until 8am each day. And voila, I’m on my way to the Games. Thinking it through a bit more, I remembered I am actually quite a good table tennis player (if I do say so myself), so I already may be considered more skilled than a novice. Maybe I’ll only need to do 5000 hours to take it to an Olympic level … which would be 20 hours a week for five years. As kids, we played ping pong (as we called it) on an old door placed on two stools. That really sharpened our skills, being that the door was half the size of a proper table tennis table. And to any of you reading this who are scoffing at my chance of representing Australia, or if you just think it’s a ludicrous ambition: just remember Raygun in Paris and also a mate of mine named Mick Colliss. Growing up, Mick dreamed of playing for Australia and competed in everything from rugby union to lawn bowls. But his chance to don the green and gold only came when he invented the *********** Sudoku team. He and three rugby mates picked themselves to compete for our country in India at the World Sudoku Championships (prior to that there had been no *********** team). I believe the first time Mick actually did his first proper Sudoku was on the plane, so it was little surprise to anyone that the team finished last in Goa. But that aside, he will forever be able to claim he played for Australia. And let me tell you, he’s been milking it ever since. 7. Trump tariffs bring more questions and fears for businesses Trump tariffs bring more questions and fears for businesses Doug Price Donald Trump’s talk of applying new tariffs to goods from America’s biggest trade partners has sparked months of uncertainty for business owners. On Saturday, the president made good on his threats, ordering a new 25% tax on shipments from Mexico and Canada and raising existing tariffs on goods from China by 10%. But that has not stopped the questions. “Is it for a day, is it a political flex or is it something that will last for four years?” asked Nicolas Palazzi, the founder of Brooklyn-based PM Spirits. He runs a 21-person business that imports and sells wine and spirits, about 20% of which come from Mexico. Getty Images Trump’s orders set in motion threats that the president has discussed for months, striking at shipments from America’s top three trade partners, which together account for more than 40% of the roughly $3tn goods the US imports each year. ********* oil and other “energy resources” will face a lower 10% rate. But otherwise, there will be no exceptions, the White House said. Trump said the tariffs were intended to hold Canada and Mexico accountable for promises to address ******** immigration and drug trafficking. The measures go into effect on 4 February and are to remain in place “until the crisis is alleviated,” according to the orders. If the plans were not a surprise, they still presented a potentially stunning blow to many businesses, especially for those in North America. The three countries have become tightly linked economically after decades of free trade under a treaty signed in the 1990s, known then as Nafta and updated and renamed under the Trump administration to USMCA. The growth of mezcal in the US, brought in by businesses like Palazzi’s, has been part of this shift. Since 2003, consumption of tequila and mezcal has roughly tripled, increasing at a rate of more than 7% each year, according to Distilled Spirits Council, a trade group. Overall since the 1990s, trade in spirits between the US and Mexico has surged by more than 4,000% percent, said the organisation, which issued a statement after the president’s announcement warning that the tariffs would “significantly harm all three countries”. For months, Palazzi has been fielding nervous questions from his suppliers in Mexico, who are typically small, family owned businesses and may not survive if the tariffs are prolonged. If it sticks, he says the 25% tax on the bottles of mezcal, tequila and rum he brings in will push up prices – and sales will drop. “Definitely this is going to impact the business negatively. But can you really plan? No,” he said. “Our strategy is roll-with-the-punches, wait and see and adapt to whatever craziness is going to unfold.” Economists say the hit from the tariffs could push the economies of Mexico and Canada into recession. Ahead of the announcement, Dan Kelly, president of the ********* Federation of Independent Businesses, described the looming tariffs from the US, and expected retaliation, as “existential” for many of his members. “Look, we get that the government has got to respond in some fashion …. But at the same time we urge the government to use caution,” he said, comparing tariffs on imports to chemotherapy: “It poisons your own people in order to try and fight the disease.” “It’s going to have an effect everywhere,” said Sophie Avernin, director of De Grandes Viñedos de Francia in Mexico, noting that many Americans own ******** alcohol brands and Modelo beer is actually owned by a Belgian company. Trump, who has embraced tariffs as a tool to address issues far removed from trade, has dismissed concerns about any collateral damage to the economy in the US. But analysts have warned the measures will weigh on growth, raise prices and cost the economy jobs – roughly 286,000, according to estimates by the Tax Foundation, not including retaliation. Those in the alcohol business said the industry had already been struggling to emerge from the shadow of the pandemic and its after-shocks, including inflation, which has prompted many Americans to cut back on dining out and drinking. Smaller firms, who typically have less financial cushion and ability to ******** a sudden 25% jump in cost, will bear the brunt of the disruption. “I’m pretty frustrated,” said California-based importer Ben Scott, whose nine-person business Pueblo de Sabor brings in brands from Mexico such as Mal Bien and Lalocura. “There’s just a huge cost that’s going to affect so many people in ways other than they’re paying a couple bucks more for a *********, which doesn’t sound like a tragedy.” Bad Hombre Importing Fred Sanchez founded his business, Bad Hombre Importing, a small California-based importer of ******** agave-based spirits like Agua del Sol, in 2014 and was recently working on deals to expand his sales to New York and Illinois. But his potential partners had been hesitating as Trump’s tariff talk ramped up last year. Now, instead of expanding, he is contemplating selling off his stock of liquor and possibly shutting down. He says he has little capacity to absorb the jump in costs and sees little scope for raising prices in the current economy. “25% is just not something that we can realistically pass onto the consumer,” he said. Sanchez said he believed that Trump might be using tariffs as a negotiating tactic, and the tax could be short-lived. Still, for his business, damage is already done. 8. There’s ‘plenty of cricket’ left in Ashes-bound Khawaja There’s ‘plenty of cricket’ left in Ashes-bound Khawaja There will be a spot for Usman Khawaja in the *********** team for the home Ashes, and maybe beyond, after a blistering double-century in the Sri Lanka series opener. That’s according to coach Andrew McDonald, who sees “plenty of cricket” left in the 38-year-old opener despite public debate about his future during the home summer. Khawaja managed only two scores above 40 in five Tests against India, but silenced his critics with the best knock of his Test career in the first match in Galle. His blistering 232 in the first innings set Australia on the path to a day-four victory by an innings and 242 runs – their biggest win in Asia and the Sri Lankan Test team’s worst ever loss. Khawaja has previously voiced his desire to feature in this summer’s home Ashes, during which he will turn 39, and his wish looks set to come true. “We still think he’s got plenty of cricket left in him,” McDonald said when asked what Khawaja’s double-century would do for his Ashes chances. “Tough summer. (Indian quick Jasprit) Bumrah. I think that’s probably where we landed in our summary of that one.” Steve Smith pointed out his long-time mate had spent the India series tackling one of cricket’s hardest assignments: facing a fresh Bumrah, the ICC’s top-ranked bowler, with the new ball in seam-friendly conditions. “There’s probably not a much ******* threat in world cricket at the moment, or almost ever,” Smith said. “Batting at the top of the order, particularly in Australia, is as hard as I’ve seen in my career.” McDonald always had high hopes Khawaja would bounce back when Australia returned to the subcontinent for the first time in two years. Khawaja had been the top run-scorer on either side when Australia toured India in 2023 – no mean feat given his struggles in Asia earlier in his career. His subsequent mastery of the conditions were on full show in Galle, with the left-hander bringing out the reverse-sweep to particularly devastating effect. “He’s an important part to the way that we play subcontinent conditions,” McDonald said. “He’s been through the wringer here before. (But he has been) able to come through that, to have a method that is successful, whether it be on the flatter side (or) whether it gets extreme. “The unquantifiable is the conversations he’s having with the next generation to get them prepared. “We value that.” Facing England at home would allow Khawaja to come full circle. England’s last visit in 2022 marked the beginning of a Test comeback for Khawaja, who had been dropped from the Test team during the previous Ashes in 2019. He recorded two centuries as Travis Head’s COVID-19 replacement in the fourth Ashes Test in 2022, then ousted out-of-form Marcus Harris from the top of the order for the fifth. Khawaja has been a fixture of the team ever since, averaging 51.4 with eight centuries in that time. “He’s still doing everything right, he’s catching well in the slips. He’s a senior figure and he’s batting really well,” said stand-in captain Smith. “I’m not a selector, but I’m sure as long as he wants to play, I’m happy with him there.” Changes to the Australia batting order appear unlikely for the second Test in Galle given the first featured the team’s largest ever total on the subcontinent (6-654 declared). But McDonald said there would certainly be shifts for the World Test Championship Final against South Africa at Lord’s in June. By then, allrounder Cameron Green should have recovered from his back injury well enough to bat, while opener Sam Konstas will push for a recall in conditions more similar to home. “We’ll keep our options open as a general theme,” McDonald said. “(But) 100 per cent it’ll be a different order to that (the first Sri Lanka Test). What the order looks like will depend on the conditions.” Source link #plenty #cricket #left #Ashesbound #Khawaja Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

Find the latest EPS estimates and surprises on Zacks Earnings Calendar. For fourth-quarter 2024, the Zacks Consensus Estimate for earnings is pegged at $2.12 per share, unchanged over the past 30 days and indicates 29.27% year-over-year growth. The consensus mark for fourth-quarter revenues is pegged at $81.38 billion, indicating growth of 12.52% from the year-ago quarter’s reported figure. Alphabet Inc. Price and EPS Surprise Alphabet Inc. price-eps-surprise | Alphabet Inc. Quote Alphabet has an impressive earnings surprise history. GOOGL’s earnings outpaced the Zacks Consensus Estimate in the trailing four quarters, the average surprise being 11.84%. Let’s see how things have shaped up for the upcoming announcement: The search giant’s to-be-reported quarterly results are expected to benefit from Android’s strength and solid momentum in search and cloud businesses. Expanding generative AI (Gen AI) capabilities are likely to have been a key catalyst. These factors are expected to have more than offset concerns related to increasing regulatory headwinds. Alphabet has been cashing in on the increasing demand for Large Language Models (LLMs) with its most powerful AI model called Gemini. Google’s Vertex AI, which enables developers to train, tune, augment and deploy applications using Gen AI models, is expected to have helped expand its clientele. Google’s launch of an enterprise-focused AI code completion and assistance tool called Gemini Code Assist is noteworthy. These tools are likely to have contributed well to top-line growth in the to-be-reported quarter. GOOGL continues to invest in state-of-the-art infrastructure to support its AI efforts globally. It is leveraging AI to improve the coding process, and more than 25% of all new code at Google is currently generated by AI. The integration of Gen AI technology into the search engine is benefiting Google Search. LLMs, coupled with multi-search and visual exploration features, are continuously improving the search results. New AI-powered enhancements, such as AI Overview, Circle to Search and advanced features in Lens, are improving user experience. AI Overview currently reaches more than 1 billion users monthly, and engagement levels are quite strong. The integration of ads within AI Overviews bodes well for Alphabet’s monetization efforts. Circle to Search is now available on more than 150 million Android devices, with people using it to shop, translate text and learn more about the world around them. Lens has become the fastest-growing query type due to its ability to help in product discovery and shopping. Alphabet is leveraging AI and Gen AI to boost Pixel’s features. The devices run on Google Tensor G4 chips, which help bring the Gemini Nano with Multimodality, Google’s latest on-device AI model. Alphabet’s strength in the mobile search category on the back of mobile-friendly algorithms, robust product listings and flight search capabilities is a plus. Story Continues Alphabet has been rapidly growing in the booming cloud computing market. Google Cloud has solidified its position as the third-largest provider in the highly competitive cloud infrastructure market against Amazon’s AMZN cloud arm, Amazon Web Services, and Microsoft’s MSFT Azure. The solid adoption of the Google Cloud Platform and Google Workspace is expected to have driven growth in the Google Cloud segment. Alphabet’s growing investments in infrastructure, security, data management, analytics and AI are expected to have been major positives. Alphabet is seeing strong demand due to an innovative AI infrastructure. GOOGL offers customers a range of AI accelerator options, including multiple classes of NVIDIA NVDA GPUs and custom-built TPUs. Enterprise AI platform Vertex is gaining rapid adoption. Enterprises are combining Alphabet’s AI platform with data platform BigQuery to make accurate real-time decisions. BigQuery machine learning operation saw 80% growth over the past six months, driven by this strong demand. Its strengthening Gen AI-backed cloud offerings are expected to have driven Google Cloud’s momentum among cloud customers in the to-be-reported quarter. Zacks Investment Research Image Source: Zacks Investment Research Alphabet’s shares have appreciated 42.2% on a trailing 12-month basis, outperforming the Zacks Internet Services industry and the Zacks Computer & Technology sector. Over the same timeframe, the sector and industry have returned 27.4% and 35.2%, respectively. GOOGL shares are overvalued, as suggested by Value Score C. Currently, GOOGL is trading at a premium, with a forward 12-month Price/Sales of 6.27X compared with the industry’s 5.88X. Zacks Investment Research Image Source: Zacks Investment Research Alphabet’s growing GenAI capabilities present a potential catalyst for future growth. Its dominant position in the search engine market is a strong growth driver. A stretched valuation, increasing regulatory concerns and stiff competition in the cloud space make GOOGL shares risky for investors. Alphabet currently has a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold), suggesting that it may be wise to wait for a more favorable entry point in the stock. 12. Doctors Are Sharing The 1 Bathroom Habit They Would Avoid At All Costs Doctors Are Sharing The 1 Bathroom Habit They Would Avoid At All Costs We’ve all been told to wipe from front to back and use a squatty potty at some point in our lives. We’ve heard this advice for a good reason ― because it works. On the other hand, when it comes to what not to do in the bathroom, some colorectal and gastrointestinal doctors have one product they don’t always recommend: wet wipes. This is not to say that every doctor is totally against using them. However, there are some potential drawbacks (aside from future plumbing issues) you’ll want to consider before reaching for one on your next trip to the bathroom. Here’s what to know. Wet wipes can cause some irritation and other issues post-potty. Japatino / Getty Images Although wet wipes are marketed to provide a better clean down there, especially after going No. 2, you’re generally not supposed to wipe with wet wipes as they can actually be more harmful than helpful. “The use of wet wipes is a common cause of perianal dermatitis (a rash around your butthole),” said Dr. Alex Elias, a board-certified female colorectal surgeon in Bakersfield, California. “The irritation caused by wet wipes can be secondary to certain ingredients and preservatives, the disruption of good bacteria, and even the residual moisture left behind.” Additionally, Dr. Maysaa El Zoghbi, a gastroenterologist at NYU Langone Hospital-Brooklyn, said the materials used in some wet wipes may be abrasive or rough, exacerbating irritation, especially in individuals with sensitive skin or conditions such as hemorrhoids or ***** fissures. Wet wipes generally contain alcohol or fragrances which can irritate the perianal area, said Dr. Ari Lamet, board-certified gastroenterologist. Plus, excess moisture that isn’t dry before leaving the restroom from the use of wet wipes can promote the growth of bacteria or fungi which can also lead to irritation, he added. According to Dr. Carlton Thomas, a gastroenterologist in San Francisco, some ingredients you’ll want to keep an eye out for include parabens, phthalates, phenoxyethanol and cocamidopropyl betaine. (You’ll want to pay attention to the ingredients in baby wipes, too, and make sure those are gentle for skin as well.) In the case that you want to use a wet wipe, you’re best off looking for an alcohol and fragrance-free wipe. Although this won’t completely eliminate the potential for irritation, it can help take away some risk factors. Outside from causing irritation, wet wipes also aren’t good for pipes which is why doctors recommend steering clear when possible. “They are terrible for the environment because they can clog sewer systems and take forever to break down,” Thomas said. What is the best wiping method? Basak Gurbuz Derman via Getty Images There’s no one-size-fits-all answer when it comes to the best wiping methods, but doctors recommend toilet paper and a bidet for starters. Bidets have been used in a number of European countries for years and the United States is slowly hopping on the bandwagon. “From a medical perspective, incorporating a bidet into one’s hygiene routine can help maintain optimal perineal health, and reduce the risk of various dermatological and infectious complications associated with inadequate cleansing practices,” El Zoghbi said. If you’re in the market for a bidet, brands like Tushy and RinseWorks make ones that are easy to install for at home use. Otherwise, you can use a squeeze bottle to mimic the effect at a more budget-friendly price point. Another option Lamet suggests is unscented toilet paper. “Gently wipe from the front to the back until the paper is clean,” he said. “Never scrub the perianal area.” During the process, you’ll want to take a quick peek at the toilet paper and in the bowl to see the color and consistency of your bowels as that can tell you a lot about your health. You’ll want to talk with your physician if you notice any bleeding or irritation while wiping as they can be signs of an underlying problem. They’ll also be able to better discuss what method is best-suited for your needs to make sure you’re staying healthy down there. This article originally appeared on HuffPost. 15. Little Rock residents react to the arrest of teen accused of deadly shooting at Park Plaza Mall Little Rock residents react to the arrest of teen accused of deadly shooting at Park Plaza Mall LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Before Abdelrahmanahmed Sallam allegedly killed Cynthia Gregory, police say he used the same gun to scare a teen he met online through Facebook Marketplace. The affidavit from Little Rock Police said an exchange for an iPhone 15 at a Sharks on Fair Park Boulevard went wrong when the teen saw he’d been scammed with a fake. As he tried to reverse the deal, the person, later identified by witnesses as Sallam, ran off firing four to five rounds behind him. Police say he also deleted the associated account which made all online messages unreadable. Court records show previous aggravated robbery investigation leads to arrest of accused Park Plaza Mall shooter Ardane Torres lives near Park Plaza where police state Sallam’s next crime was 8 days later. “It’s scary because we can’t just trust anyone that you will just meet,” Torres said. Halfway between the Jan. 19 armed robbery and the Jan. 27 *******, police say on Jan. 24 Sallam leased a new apartment at the Park Avenue Lofts. According to the affidavit, surveillance video caught the suspect walking from the loft parking lot, running to Gregory, trying to steal her purse, shooting her, and retreating across the street to hop over the Chick-fil-A parking lot fence. Cameras also caught him returning to the Park Avenue Lofts parking deck. Friends remember Park Plaza shooting victim Cynthia Gregory Kristina Ballard was walking nearby by herself to run errands on Thursday. She said she was on edge before learning an arrest was made. “It kind of gives you a scare. Is it safe? I mean can I go outside? Do I have to carry a weapon? Do I have to be on alert?” Ballard asked. Police matched shell casings from the robbery to the *******, and arrested Sallam for armed robbery. When they searched Sallam’s apartment, they also found the same clothes seen worn during the *******. “I’ve been through rough times, and I understand you get desperate…on the other hand, dude, you’ve been in the world long enough, you don’t treat people, that’s not the way to go about things,” Ballard said. Little Rock police arrest suspect in deadly Park Plaza Mall shooting After Little Rock Police announced the arrest, Park Plaza Mall sent a statement. In part, the last paragraph reads: “We share the frustration and sadness that such an event could happen here – whether at Park Plaza or anywhere in our neighborhood. This is our shared community, and we are committed to doing our best to keep it safe and thriving. We believe in the future of Little Rock and the vibrancy of Park Plaza as part of that future.” Park Plaza Mall Friday at 9 am, Little Rock Mayor Frank Scott Junior and Police Chief Heath Helton will hold a public safety update inside Little Rock Police Headquarters. 19. Women to party, men phone it in at cricket awards Women to party, men phone it in at cricket awards Whoever wins the Allan Border Medal, they will be accepting the award via video link. Travis Head is the strong favourite to be crowned the top *********** men’s cricketer for the first time during the awards ceremony at Melbourne’s Crown Palladium on Monday night. Stand-in Australia captain Steve Smith has tipped Head, the leading runscorer in the Border-Gavaskar trophy triumph, to win the Allan Border Medal. “I’m going to go Travis Head, he’s had a pretty good year in all formats. That’s my tip,” Smith said after Australia’s crushing win against Sri Lanka. During the voting ******* that started with Australia’s home Test series against West Indies in January 2024, the left-handed dynamo notched up 1427 international runs across all formats. But due to a quirk of the scheduling, all of Australia’s top men’s cricketers will still be in Sri Lanka and won’t be in the room in Melbourne. Captain Pat Cummins is realistically Head’s only real threat for the medal, having performed strongly in the disappointing T20 World Cup campaign, before starring in the five-Test series against India. If Cummins wins his second Allan Border Medal, then he could be accepting the award from Sydney with a newborn baby on his lap. Cummins has missed the tour of Sri Lanka due to the impending birth of his second child. He first won the medal back in 2019, with axed Test allrounder Mitch Marsh claiming an emotional and unexpected victory last year. Marsh, who has been ruled out of the Champions Trophy due to an ongoing back issue, gave an instantly-iconic acceptance speech that gave extra importance to the awards night. While only men’s white-ball players will be in attendance, the all-conquering women’s side will be celebrated in person after completing a historic Ashes whitewash of England. Australia won all seven games of the series, culminating in a ruthless innings and 122-run thumping of their rivals in the day-night Test at the MCG. Allrounder Ashleigh Gardner will be in strong contention to win back-to-back Belinda Clark Awards to give her a third victory in four years. But Test superstar Annabel Sutherland and consistent all-format gun Beth Mooney will also be vying for the honour. Spin star Alana King was crowned player of the Ashes after bamboozling England with a record-equalling 23 wickets, but her lack of T20 matches will likely her cost a shot at winning the award for the first time. 20. Fight between couple leads to ‘rushed mass exodus’ at Opry Mills Mall, police say Fight between couple leads to ‘rushed mass exodus’ at Opry Mills Mall, police say NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — Police and first responders rushed to Opry Mills Mall following an incident Saturday afternoon, but despite the rumors circulating on social media, that incident was not a shooting, according to officials. Metro Nashville Police Department (MNPD) Public Information Officer Kris Mumford said officers responded to reports of shots fired — which “turned out, fortunately, not to be the case” — at the mall around 2:15 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 1. “A fight in Opry Mills Mall has caused a rushed mass exodus of the building,” the MNPD posted on X just before 3 p.m. “Contrary to rumor, the MNPD thus far has no evidence of any gunfire.” WATCH | Nashville officials hold briefing after fight leads to ‘rushed mass exodus’ at Opry Mills Mall Mumford told News 2 the situation started with a domestic incident inside the Chili’s. A female reportedly came into the restaurant and assaulted her boyfriend who was working there, the fight spilled outside, and that led to the calls of shots fired as people started to flee the mall or shelter in place. “It wouldn’t be a surprise to think that people might be fearful, especially in light of recent events. People, I think, were all very sensitive to these types of situations, so that claim of shots being fired did go out. We’re investigating that…we’re not ruling that out,” Mumford explained. “We just haven’t found any evidence of that, so as the investigation progresses, we may have more answers in that area, but again, the mall very wisely said, ‘Shelter in place.’ That’s what people did, and right now we’re clearing the mall to make sure that if there is anyone still hiding or not been accounted for that we can locate.” CRIME TRACKER | Read the latest crime-related reports from across Middle Tennessee Mumford said the victim of the fight at Chili’s is safe, but detectives are still looking into the initial assault and whether or not weapons were involved. However, Mumford acknowledged it was possible that people may have thought that plates or chairs hitting the floor sounded like gunfire. According to Kendra Loney with the Nashville Fire Department (NFD), even though multiple individuals were assessed at the scene for scrapes and bumps from falling while rushing for the exit or running outside, as well as heightened anxiety amid the chaotic situation, nobody was brought to the hospital. Authorities said the mall has been evacuated and closed while law enforcement and first responders continue to clear the area, secure the building, investigate, and let anyone who may still be hiding know that it’s safe. Read today’s top stories on wkrn.com According to the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT), both exits to Opry Mills — Exit 11 northbound and southbound — are currently closed due to the investigation. 24. ******** president orders retaliatory tariffs against U.S ******** president orders retaliatory tariffs against U.S MEXICO CITY (Reuters) – ******** President Claudia Sheinbaum said on Saturday she ordered her economy minister to implement tariff and non-tariff measures to defend her country’s interests, after the U.S. slapped across-the-board duties on goods coming from Mexico. In a lengthy post on X, Sheinbaum stressed her government does not seek confrontation with its northern neighbor but collaboration and dialogue. The leftist leader, who has repeatedly sought to calm tensions with U.S. President Donald Trump, touted her government’s record since she took office in October, seizing 20 million doses of deadly synthetic opioid fentanyl, in addition to detaining over 10,0000 individuals tied to drug trafficking. Trump said the tariffs against Mexico were due to the country’s failure to stop fentanyl getting into the United States as well as what he describes as uncontrolled migration.
