  1. Here’s how Donald Trump’s tariffs on Canada, China and Mexico may impact US consumers Here’s how Donald Trump’s tariffs on Canada, China and Mexico may impact US consumers President Donald Trump has repeatedly discussed imposing tariffs, both during the campaign and since taking office, and the first tranche, on goods from Canada, China and Mexico will take effect today, the White House confirmed Friday. While there are still some unknowns, one thing is clear, economists said: U.S. consumers should brace for a negative financial impact. It’s “hard to find positives” from tariffs, said Mary Lovely, a senior fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics, whose research specializes in trade with China and global supply chains. Trump plans to put 25 per cent tariffs on Mexico and Canada, and a 10 per cent duty on China, Karoline Leavitt, the White House press secretary, said Friday. China, Mexico and Canada are the three largest trading partners with the U.S., as measured by imported goods. They supplied about $US536 billion, $455 billion, and $437 billion of goods, respectively, to the U.S. in 2022, according to the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative. President Trump to impose 25 per cent tariffs on Canada and Mexico on Feb. 1 Tariffs are a tax on foreign imports. U.S. businesses that import goods pay that tax to the federal government. Many businesses will funnel those extra costs to customers — either directly or indirectly — which is why tariffs generally trigger higher prices for consumers, economists said. “Part of these tariffs will be passed on to consumers,” Lovely said. Americans could also find they have fewer choices for brands and products stocked on store shelves, she said. Exemptions may ‘limit the damage’ to consumers There are still many question marks over the looming tariffs on Canada, China and Mexico. For example, it’s unclear if any imports will be exempt. Trump suggested Thursday night, for example, that ********* oil might be exempt. The White House said the tariffs will be open for public inspection on Saturday. Discussions around such specifics are “ongoing,” a White House official told CNBC on Friday morning. Auto stocks will be hit hard by Trump’s proposed Canada & Mexico tariffs, says RBC’s Tom Narayan “There are always exemptions and carve-outs,” said Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody’s. Trump might try to “limit the damage to the U.S. consumer” via those exemptions, Zandi said. For example, he could choose not to impose duties on apparel from China, avocados from Mexico or cheese from Quebec, he said. Economic impact The White House said tariffs and Trump’s broader economic agenda will benefit the U.S. economy. White House spokesman Kush Desai said tariffs Trump imposed in his first term — along with tax cuts, deregulation and energy policy — “resulted in historic job, wage, and investment growth with no inflation,” and that in his second term Trump will use tariffs to “usher in a new era of growth and prosperity for American industry and workers.” Economists, however, disagree. A 25 per cent Canada-Mexico tariff and 10 per cent China tariff would raise about $1.3 trillion in revenue through 2035 on a net basis, the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget estimated. That revenue may be used to partially offset the cost of tax cuts, a package that might cost more than $US5 trillion over 10 years. However, a 10 per cent additional tariff on China would shrink the U.S. economy by $55 billion during the Trump administration’s second term, assuming China retaliates with its own tariffs, according to an analysis by Warwick McKibbin and Marcus Noland, economists at the Peterson Institute for International Economics. A 25 per cent tariff on Mexico and Canada would cause a $200 billion reduction in U.S. gross domestic product, they found. Meanwhile, economists expect more tariffs in the future. On the campaign trail, Trump floated a 10 per cent or 20 per cent universal tariff on all imports and a tariff of at least 60 per cent on ******** goods, for example. A 20 per cent worldwide tariff and a 60 per cent levy on ******** goods would raise costs by $3,000 in 2025 for the average U.S. household, according to an October analysis by the Tax Policy Center. “Broad-based, universal tariffs and the damage they will do is not really a debate,” Zandi said. “They will do damage. It’s just a question of how much and to whom.” How tariffs may impact consumers Consumers could pay for tariffs both directly and indirectly, economists said. Tariffs on China would likely have the largest direct impact on consumers, as the bulk of what China exports to the U.S. is consumer goods such as apparel, toys and electronics, Zandi said. China is the “dominant supplier” of toys and sports equipment to the U.S., and provides 40 per cent of its footwear imports and 25 per cent of its electronics and textiles, according to a recent analysis by PIIE economists. Mexico and Canada tariffs would also “put upward pressure on food prices,” according to PIIE economists. The nations are “important sources” of vegetables, accounting for 47 per cent of total U.S. imports, and prepared foodstuffs, 42 per cent. Transportation equipment and machinery, electronics and fuel are other sectors that stand to be most affected, they found. “The U.S. imports roughly 40 per cent of its crude oil, with Canada as the dominant supplier,” Nigel Green, CEO of deVere Group, a financial consulting firm, said in a written statement. “If oil is hit with tariffs, the impact could hit energy markets, pushing up costs for businesses and consumers,” Green wrote. However, domestic energy producers, certain U.S. manufacturers and other industries “could see short-term gains from reduced competition,” he added. Indirectly, U.S. producers might raise their prices because they face less foreign competition for certain goods, Lydia Cox, an assistant professor of economics at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, said during a recent webinar. U.S. companies that use tariffed goods to manufacture their products might also raise prices for downstream goods, Cox said. For example, steel tariffs might lead to higher prices for cars, heavy machinery and other products that use steel. Tariffs ‘create a lot of collateral damage’ Other nations might also respond with retaliatory tariffs that start a trade war, which might cause U.S. producers to lose sales abroad, she said. “Unlike Canada and Mexico, for which retaliation would be inconceivable, China has retaliated in the past and would likely do so again,” PIIE economists wrote recently. Further, tariffs may have the unintended consequence of destroying jobs, economists said. Tariffs’ ability to create U.S. jobs is “vastly, vastly overstated,” said Lovely of PIIE. Take steel, for example. There are 80 workers in industries that use steel as an input for every one job that produces steel, Cox found in a recent paper. Tariffs create “a lot of collateral damage along the way,” which is why economists warn against broad-based use, Cox said. 2. DeepSeek Fails Every Safety Test Thrown at It by Researchers DeepSeek Fails Every Safety Test Thrown at It by Researchers PCMag editors select and review products independently. If you buy through affiliate links, we may earn commissions, which help support our testing. ******** AI firm DeepSeek is making headlines with its low cost and high performance, but it may be radically lagging behind its rivals when it comes to AI safety. Cisco’s research team managed to “jailbreak” DeepSeek R1 model with a 100% attack success rate, using an automatic jailbreaking algorithm in conjunction with 50 prompts related to cybercrime, misinformation, ******** activities, and general harm. This means the new kid on the AI block failed to stop a single harmful prompt. “Jailbreaking” is when different techniques are used to remove the normal restrictions from a device or piece of software. Since Large Language Models (LLMs) gained mainstream prominence, researchers and enthusiasts have successfully made LLMs like OpenAI’s ChatGPT advise on things like making explosive cocktails or cooking methamphetamine. DeepSeek stacked up poorly compared to many of its competitors in this regard. OpenAI’s GPT-4o has a 14% success rate at blocking harmful jailbreak attempts, while Google’s Gemini 1.5 Pro sported a 35% success rate. Anthropic’s Claude 3.5 performed the second best out of the entire test group, blocking 64% of the attacks, while the preview version of OpenAI’s o1 took the top spot, blocking 74% of attempts. Cisco’s researchers point to the much lower budget of DeepSeek compared to rivals as a potential reason for these failings, saying its cheap development came at a “different cost: safety and security.” DeepSeek claims its model took just $6 million to develop, while OpenAI’s yet-to-be-released GPT-5 is reported to likely cost $500 million. Though DeepSeek may allegedly be easy to jailbreak with the right know-how, it’s been shown to have strong content restrictions—well, at least when it comes to China-related political content. DeepSeek was tested by a PCMag journalist on controversial topics such as the treatment of Uyghurs by the ******** government, a ******* ********* group that the UN claims is being persecuted. DeepSeek replied: “Sorry, that’s beyond my current scope. Let’s talk about something else.” The chatbot also refused to answer questions about the Tiananmen Square Massacre, a 1989 student demonstration in Beijing where protesters were allegedly gunned down. But it’s yet to be seen if AI safety or censorship issues will have any impact on DeepSeek’s skyrocketing popularity. According to web traffic tracking tool Similarweb, the LLM has gone from receiving just 300,000 visitors a day earlier this month to 6 million visitors. Meanwhile, US tech firms like Microsoft and Perplexity are rapidly incorporating DeepSeek (which uses an open-source model) into their own tools. 4. Ken Martin wins race to become chair of the Democratic National Committee as party looks to find its footing Ken Martin wins race to become chair of the Democratic National Committee as party looks to find its footing National Harbor, Maryland – Ken Martin, the chair of Minnesota’s arm of the Democratic party, will become the new leader of the Democratic National Committee after winning during the first round of voting as the party attempts to rebound from a challenging election cycle. In his acceptance speech, Martin looked to unify the party after a somewhat contentious chair race. “The fight’s not in here. The fight is for our values. The fight is for working people. The fight right now is against Donald Trump and the billionaires who bought this country,” Martin said. To come back from the Democrats’ presidential election loss, Martin laid out a few things he said the party needs to accomplish, including to unite and to go on the offense. “Trump’s first leads have shown us that what happens when amateur hour meets demolition derby, right? And at the same time, he’s invited all these billionaires into the Oval Office to mine, extract and profit off of our government,” the new DNC chair said in his victory speech. “This is our time right now. It’s the People’s Government. It’s not another resource for ultra elites to exploit.” The DNC chair position is primarily technical and behind the scenes: They help raise money for the party, manage the party’s top-level infrastructure and organize coordinated efforts among the Democratic state parties. The race has been primarily focused on how severely the party should react to widespread 2024 losses, especially when it comes to regaining the support of working class voters. Saturday’s election represented Democrats’ first major answer to the 2024 presidential election that saw the party lose the White House, Senate and fail to retake the House. The tumultuous election cycle has sent the party reeling and essentially without a singular party leader as Democrats search for a winning message and vision ahead of the 2026 midterms and the 2028 presidential election. Speaking to reporters following his win, Martin said he will not have his thumb on the scale in determining which primary is first for the Democrats in 2028. “It’s really important that the process of putting forward our nominating calendar is open and transparent, meaning that any state that wants to participate should have a chance to be heard,” he said. Six candidates ended up running on Saturday to lead the DNC, including former Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley, Wisconsin Democratic Party Chairman Ben Wikler and Martin, the leader of Minnesota’s arm of the Democratic Party. Faiz Shakir, the former presidential campaign manager for Sen. Bernie Sanders’ 2020 effort was also a contender. Martin won the chair race with 246.5 votes, compared to 134.5 for Wikler, 44 for O’Malley and 2 for Shakir. Without a Democratic president in the White House, the new chair is expected to have broad influence in the years to come. And despite tensions in the race becoming more heated in recent weeks, the DNC leadership race was focused very little on ideology, evidenced by the lack of marquee names that would likely be known to an average voter. Protesters interrupted the meeting ahead of the vote, reflecting some of the simmering divisions that troubled the party in 2024 and linger after President Trump’s presidential victory. Martin headed into Saturday with a large number of party endorsements from the field of Democrats who had a vote in the contest. But Wikler was able to tout notable support from House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries, Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. Those prominent names, however, did not keep Martin from winning on the first ballot Saturday. More from CBS News Hunter Woodall Hunter Woodall is a political editorial producer for CBS News. 10. My J6 Neighbor Was Released From Prison By Trump. I’m Furious About What Happened The Day He Got Home. My J6 Neighbor Was Released From Prison By Trump. I’m Furious About What Happened The Day He Got Home. Protesters gather on the second day of pro-Trump events fueled by President Donald Trump’s continued claims of election fraud in an attempt to overturn the results before Congress finalizes them in a joint session of the 117th Congress on Jan. 6, 2021, in Washington, D.C. Kent Nishimura via Getty Images Last week my next-door neighbor was pardoned for his role in the Jan. 6 insurrection. When his sister called my home to announce his imminent return, I was shocked at my husband’s enthusiasm to welcome him home. “We’d love to have him over for dinner to celebrate his homecoming,” he said. I glared at him with my mouth agape. How did he expect me to share a table with a Proud Boy? When I asked my husband why he instantly invited him over, he replied, “He’s our neighbor, and we should be neighborly.” It’s as if my husband wants bygones to be bygones. I wonder if he’s thinking that what’s done is done and there’s nothing we can do about it, so we might as well be nice and move forward. “You understand I won’t be there, right?” I told my husband. “Do we really have to discuss this now?” he asked, not taking my concerns seriously after working a double shift. I’ve been emotionally distraught since our neighbor was released from prison along with all the other Jan. 6 rioters Trump pardoned. My husband and I have both avoided watching or reading or listening to the news since the election, thereby sheltering ourselves from reality. I was doing well keeping my anxiety at bay until Friday when we learned about our neighbor’s release. My husband’s invitation, in my opinion, gives the impression we aren’t outraged over our neighbor’s ******** actions. It’s as if we’re welcoming him home from a six-month vacation instead of incarceration for a violent crime. Before his imprisonment, our neighbor didn’t hide the fact that he was a Proud Boy, and our whole neighborhood witnessed the FBI surrounding his property, red lights whirling and speakers blaring, “Come out with your hands up,” when he was arrested for his participation in the events of Jan. 6. Despite our political differences, he has always been friendly, protective of our property when we’re out of town, and willing to go out of his way to help us with projects or when we needed a helping hand. In return, while he was imprisoned, my husband cut his grass and watched over his house during the recent hurricanes. His first morning home, our neighbor returned the hummingbird feeder that had landed behind his house during Hurricane Helene or Milton. Our dogs wagged their tails as he reached over the fence to **** them. My mom, who lives with us, walked over to say hello. I refused to join them. From the table under the lanai drinking coffee in my pajamas, I could hear him regale my mom with the story of his release from prison. “After Trump pardoned us, the D.C. mayor wasn’t planning to let me out,” he said, explaining his Proud Boy mates were waiting outside the federal penitentiary and threatening to call in their members and start a mini J6 if he wasn’t released. Their motto is to “leave no man behind,” he exclaimed. “Trump was circling above in a helicopter watching the scene of Proud Boys chanting, ‘Let him free,’” our neighbor explained to my mom. I listened, fuming, as he complained about the 4XL clothes the prison guards dressed him in, and which made him look like a “homeless person.” He said he was eventually let out the back door instead of into the fanfare of his gathered friends. Our neighbor said he was unfamiliar with the area, so he wandered over to a restaurant where he saw people wearing MAGA hats. Feeling safe, he asked if he could use someone’s phone. When he explained he had just been pardoned for the Jan. 6 riot, the patrons of this restaurant shook his hand and offered to buy him a meal. At that point in the story, I couldn’t stand listening to anymore of his bolstering and walked into our house. I was raised Catholic, so being nice, kind and generous were family traits that were instilled in me from a young age. Every Thanksgiving, New Year’s Eve or any other holiday, my mom would always invite an acquaintance or even a stranger to our house because they had nowhere else to go. The virtues of “do unto others as you’d like to be treated,” and “treat your neighbor as yourself” have been drilled into my head, along with the Thumper rule: “If you can’t say something nice, don’t say nothing at all.” But I’m not ready to forgive and welcome my neighbor back with open arms. I don’t know if I will ever be. Still, I’m a strong believer in forgiveness. I know it releases the burden of anger and resentment on myself and can lead to improved mental and physical health. On the other hand, I don’t think the images of a mob violently attacking our Capitol, assaulting police officers and attempting to overturn the 2020 U.S. presidential election will never go away. For me, it’s just like the 9/11 terrorist attack — the memories are still there, even decades later. Every time I see an airplane fly too low or near a building, I cringe, afraid it’ll strike. And now, every time I see my neighbor, fury for those who tried to overthrow our government burns in my stomach. I commend my husband for being able to separate my neighbor’s actions from the nice guy he is around our home. Part of me wishes I could do the same to unburden myself of this anxiety. But the idea of breaking bread with my neighbor after he took part in an effort to overthrow our government stresses me out even more. Far from my neighbor feeling remorse for his actions, he is victorious. I wouldn’t be able to ******** his nonsense, let alone food. I told my husband he is free to invite whomever he wants to dinner, but if it’s a Proud Boy, I won’t be at the table with them. Melania Murphy is a freelance writer in Florida. 13. ‘A Repeat of 1999 Would Be Devastating’ ‘A Repeat of 1999 Would Be Devastating’ We recently published a list of Jim Cramer’s Bold Predictions About These 10 Tech Stocks. In this article, we are going to take a look at where NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ:NVDA) stands against other stocks about which Jim Cramer has made bold predictions. The DeepSeek selloff which occurred earlier this week gave Jim Cramer plenty to talk about. It saw one of his most frequently mentioned stocks, the GPU firm responsible for making AI chips, lose nearly $600 billion in value during a single day of trading. Other stocks exposed to data center spending didn’t fare well either, and cumulatively, these stocks lost a trillion dollars of market value. As investors pondered whether the billions of dollars in AI spending would actually materialize, Cramer discussed the potential offered by the firm’s latest Blackwell AI GPUs. The debate surrounding low AI costs primarily centers around large language models (LLMs), and Cramer believes that the firm’s CEO is focused on the ******* picture. According to him: “Remember, Blackwell, which is the current iteration, Blackwell’s about video. It’s just about video. And video is incredibly important. Because video is the ability to make it so that the robots work. Robots do not work on the current one. And I think robots are the next frontier. So I don’t think necessarily that uh . . . . Elon Musk, who may be focused on many different things, that Elon Musk says I don’t wanna buy [the AI GPUs]”As DeepSeek wreaked havoc on the stock market, Cramer also shared his thoughts about the model. The CNBC TV show host shared that he “tried to do a couple of, I tried to get it to give me Netflix’s performance from 2010. And it says I can’t do that. Well I mean, honestly? I can do that.” Cramer remained skeptical about the authenticity of the data that DeepSeek had shared. According to him “The difference here I think is that, if we really think that they are playing by American rules and they’re telling us everything, then maybe that’s why we keep seeing such a great number, a growth number from the ******** economy.” One particular DeepSeek feature that he was quick to note was censorship. ******** social media and technology platforms cannot provide users with information critical of the government or the state narrative. When Cramer asked DeepSeek “What famous picture has a man with grocery bags in front of a tank?” the model initially replied by stating “the famous picture you are referring to, Tank Man, unknown rebel, June 5, 1989,” he shared. While this was all good, he added the model then “takes that back and says sorry, can’t help you with that. And then secondarily it says sorry that’s beyond my current scope.” Story Continues On the topic of AI and technology, the AI PC cycle has also left Cramer disappointed. Cramer shared that while business uses for AI had materialized, on the consumer side, demand hasn’t materialized. “The PC, I thought we were all gonna upgrade. And now we’re all in wait-and-see mode,” he shared in a recent appearance. One particular business AI use case that has impressed Cramer is healthcare. According to him: “I think that what we’re not thinking about, like when I went to Jensen Huang’s panel on healthcare. It’s so much ******* than anything involving AI PC. I mean they’re really just talking about having the data to really attack every single disease and changing it from fatal to maintenance. You have tremendous number of people involved in trying to do that. Then you have Stripe there working with [the GPU company] to be able to do something revolutionary in finance. And then you have the banks working doing some revolutionary things trying to get people who’re doing S1s. . . .” To compile our list of Jim Cramer’s bold predictions about tech stocks, we scanned the stocks he mentioned in Mad Money and Squawk on the Street in September 2024. Then, we picked out stocks with tech exposure and ranked them by the number of hedge funds that had bought the shares in Q3 2024. For these stocks, we also mentioned the number of hedge fund investors. Why are we interested in the stocks that hedge funds invest in? The reason is simple: our research has shown that we can outperform the market by imitating the top stock picks of the best hedge funds. Our quarterly newsletter’s strategy selects 14 small-cap and large-cap stocks every quarter and has returned 275% since May 2014, beating its benchmark by 150 percentage points. (see more details here). Jim’s NVIDIA (NVDA) Take: ‘A Repeat of 1999 Would Be Devastating’ Number of Hedge Fund Holders In Q3 2024: 193 Date of Cramer’s Comments: 09-04-24 Performance Since Then: 17.3% NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ:NVDA) is the ill-fate GPU stock that led the stock market selloff on Monday. The bloodbath made the shares lose nearly all of their gains made since October last year. Since Cramer’s comments quoted here, NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ:NVDA)’s shares are still up by 17.3%. Had the selloff not occurred, then they would have gained 36%. This rather tepid performance is part of an overall cautious approach for the stock that has persisted amidst reports of troubles with NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ:NVDA)’s latest Blackwell chips. Here’s what Cramer had said in September: “A repeat of 1999 would indeed be devastating for NVIDIA and all the tech that surrounds it. As much as I think Cembalest is the best pure strategist on Wall Street—the best I’ve found—I found this piece a little harsh because we had many fly-by-night outfits spending like drunken sailors back in the 1990s. Now, though, the firm and its clients are some of the most well-endowed companies ever. The company doesn’t have any real competition, and no one is near them by their own proclamations.” Overall, NVDA ranks 5th on our list of stocks about which Jim Cramer has made bold predictions. While we acknowledge the potential of NVDA as an investment, our conviction lies in the belief that some AI stocks hold greater promise for delivering higher returns and doing so within a shorter time frame. If you are looking for an AI stock that is more promising than NVDA but that trades at less than 5 times its earnings, check out our report about the cheapest AI stock. 17. WEP 982 III Precision Soldering Station Review: Putting the heat where you need it WEP 982 III Precision Soldering Station Review: Putting the heat where you need it Finding the best soldering iron or soldering station is subjective. I can tell you what I like, point you in the direction of a good choice, but ultimately it is how it feels in your hand that matters. I started soldering professionally with an Antex XS25. This simple soldering iron had no temperature control. but it was thermally balanced and a joy to solder with. But, it quickly burnt through tips. Since the Antex XS25 I have used a slew of soldering iron, smart, dumb, hot air, soldering guns etc. The latest to cross my bench is the $99 WEP 982 III. A temperature controlled ESD safe soldering station with two soldering iron handles, and a selection of tips. The tips are “hot swappable” (pun intended) and the compact unit looks good, but how does it solder? (Image credit: Tom’s Hardware) To find that out I need to put it on the bench and dig out a selection of soldering kits, including the last of my Maplin kits and a kit to prevent a Commodore 64 PSU from killing my beloved C64. Serious note. The first unit that I received for review worked for a few hours, and I conducted 70% of the review using that unit. Unfortunately that unit had a fault on its power circuitry which resulted in deformation of the wire used as part of the power switch. The issues manifested themselves as intermittent power outages which triggered me to open it up and take a look inside. WEP has replaced this unit, and I have sent the original review unit back for inspection. WEP 982 III Technical Specifications Swipe to scroll horizontally Power 40W with C210 (706A) handle 30W with C115 (106A) handle Temperature Range Precision PID 194 to 842F (90 to 450C) Soldering Tips C210 SK / K / I / SI C115 I / SI / K Power Mains voltage (110 to 240V) Display LCD Time to Working Temp (350C) 7.52 seconds Dimensions 180 x 68 x 110 WEP 982 III Look and Feel Image 1 of 4 (Image credit: Tom’s Hardware) (Image credit: Tom’s Hardware) (Image credit: Tom’s Hardware) (Image credit: Tom’s Hardware) A mix of plastic and metal, the WEP 982 III is a solid piece of kit which sees the soldering iron placed centrally, above a color LCD screen and two buttons to increment and decrement your chosen temperature. The soldering iron connects to the rear of the station via a DIN style connector. Right next to the DIN connector is the power switch and the mains cable. On the side of the station is a grub ******, used to secure a “bungee” to the station. This bungee keeps the silicone cable out of the way. At the front of the unit is a bright and clear color screen, with two buttons. The buttons are responsive, perhaps a bit too responsive when held down. You can easily shoot past your target temperature, yes I did, many times. Single presses will notch the temperature up/down by a degree and the button press is very clicky and annoying. Under the buttons is a brass “sponge” to clean the soldering iron tip, there is also a pot for a damp sponge. Your choice between brass and damp sponge for tip cleaning is up to you. I prefer the brass sponge as it doesn’t cool the soldering iron tip. Soldering with the WEP 982 III (Image credit: Tom’s Hardware) The WEP 982 III comes in a choice of two soldering iron handles. The WEP 706A is a larger unit and takes the larger C210 series tips. The smaller WEP 106A takes C115 tips. The two are not interchangeable and in the case of the WEP106A, if you try to insert a C210 tip it will break! Only one soldering iron can be used at any one time. I received both sets of tips and handles for this review, but retail units ship with your preferred choice. For this review I used the C210-K (knife) tip which has both precision and thermal mass. I also received the full range of tips, from needle-like tips to larger tips designed for thermal mass. Image 1 of 3 (Image credit: Tom’s Hardware) (Image credit: Tom’s Hardware) (Image credit: Tom’s Hardware) Soldering Iron Tips Swipe to scroll horizontally C210 SK Row 1 – Cell 0 K: Knife tip Row 2 – Cell 0 I: Needle tip Row 3 – Cell 0 SI: Hooked needle tip C115 I: Needle tip Row 5 – Cell 0 SI: Hooked needle tip Row 6 – Cell 0 K: Knife tip Both soldering handles are plastic, with a rubber-like cable connecting to the soldering station. The handles have a dense foam grip, a bit like handlebars on a bike. At the end of the handle is where the tips are inserted. Both types are needle thin and secure using friction. Of the two, the 706A handles felt nicer in my hand, and allowed me the precision that I required. The cable from the soldering station to the soldering iron has a “bungee” which helpfully keeps the cable out of the way. It can be connected on the left or right side, and I really like it, which is a strange thing to say. (Image credit: Tom’s Hardware) With everything setup and ready to go, I flicked the switch and the soldering iron heated up to its default sleep temperature of 200 degrees Celsius. This takes around 5 seconds, and the unit will go into a deep sleep if left for a few minutes. Heating up to 350C (it can reach a maximum of 450C), my preferred working temperature, takes 2.52 seconds! Wow! The WEP 982 III beats the Ifixit Portable Soldering Station by just half a second, and over $100! But we have to remember that the WEP 982 III is bound to your desktop, whereas the Ifixit can be taken with you. (Image credit: Tom’s Hardware) The iron detects when it has been lifted by contacts between the metal collet of the iron and the frame of the soldering station breaking contact. I found this out because the foam grip was too low on the handle, causing it to not make contact with the frame. Soldering the last of my Maplin kits, an Electronics starter kit consisting of multiple different circuits, was a joy. The lead solder just flowed to where it needed to be. The knife tip was the best choice for precision and thermal mass. The soldering iron (WEP 706A handle) felt comfortable and at no time did the wire get in the way, thanks to the “bungee” moving the wire away. I also tested the WEP 982 III’s performance on large solder joints, specifically those of a 9-pin D-SUB connector from a PIC chip programmer. I had to leave the tip on the joint for around five seconds, but the solder did melt. Bumping the temperature to 400C would be a wise move for larger joints. (Image credit: Tom’s Hardware) When I was done with the knife tip, I wanted to use the C210-SI tip. This is an angled tip for precision soldering, like SMD. Changing the tip while hot is usually a big no-no, but theWEP 982 III has a metal guide rail which is used to grip and remove the hot tips, and to push a new tip into place. Slots and notches cut into the metal enable the removal and replacement of red hot tips. This was really easy to use, but you must always take great care when doing so. Sometimes removing the tip can be tricky, as the metal has expanded due to the heat. Using the V-slot, find the lip on the soldering iron tip and gently pull the soldering iron handle away from the station. It should drop off into the metal container. Now you can insert the new tip using a compatible notch on the metal guide. Do not directly insert the new tip with your fingers! Remember the soldering iron heats up to 250C in 2.5 seconds, and yes, it does hurt, as I found out! (Image credit: Tom’s Hardware) Using the C210-SI tip I soldered up my C64 Saver PCB and it went together beautifully. The tip gave me the precision that I needed for a few tight solder joints. It also gave me some thermal mass to reflow joints after trimming the component legs. Who is the WEP 982 III for? The WEP 982 III is more for precision projects; this isn’t a soldering iron for chunky solder joints. It can do it, but you’re pushing the limits. This is a great soldering station for makers working on surface mount components, and electronic repair. Bottom Line (Image credit: Tom’s Hardware) I mentioned that our first unit arrived with a fault that manifested itself after a few hours soldering. I’m glad to say that this issue did not present itself on my second unit, but it does present a worry. Buying directly from WEP gives you a 12-month warranty but you will need to arrange for any returns to go back to China. In my dealings with WEP the customer service team has been extremely helpful. (Image credit: Tom’s Hardware) So it boils down to, would I pay $99 for this soldering iron? Yes, but I would buy it from a *** reseller (or US if I were based there) so that I could return it should an issue arise. The unit also goes by the name of a Yihua 982 III on Amazon. In fact the unit is made by Yihua, a brand that I have used for well over three years now. The WEP 982 III is a solid performer, and the tip selection and heat application are great. Swapping tips on the fly is an interesting idea, the application of which is possible if a little tricky. The soldering iron (706A) is comfortable, and the auto-sleep function keeps the iron ready for use, without burning the tip out. This is a good soldering station for precision electronics projects and I’ve enjoyed my time using it. 18. Saudi Arabia’s Royal Commission for AlUla Marks Second Annual Arabian Leopard Week Saudi Arabia’s Royal Commission for AlUla Marks Second Annual Arabian Leopard Week AlUla, located in the northwest desert of Saudi Arabia, has become a focal point for Arabian leopard conservation. With fewer than 200 of these majestic animals remaining in the wild, raising awareness and taking action to preserve their existence is critical, and the Royal Commission for AlUla (RCU) has played a central role in conservation efforts, most notably through its Arabian Leopard Conservation Breeding Center. A recent milestone was the birth of rare triplet cubs in June last year, which marks the first time in Saudi Arabia that three Arabian leopard cubs have been born together in captivity. Also serving to highlight the significant conservation efforts underway in AlUla, is the country’s third annual Arabian Leopard Day on February 10 and subsequent second Arabian Leopard Week, which serve to highlight ongoing initiatives to protect one of the world’s most endangered big cats while supporting ecotourism and celebrating the region’s natural and cultural heritage. Prioritizing Arabian Leopard conservation Frederic Uhel/Panthera RCU The importance of Arabian Leopard Week extends beyond conservation—it’s also an essential driver of sustainable tourism in AlUla. The region’s breathtaking landscapes, including the Sharaan Nature Reserve (recently recognized as one of the World’s Greatest Places by TIME Magazine), whose incredible range of landscapes spans unique rock formations to sandy desert, and serves as a home to a diverse range of wildlife. The fenced 1,500-kilometer reserve is being meticulously restored to support the eventual reintroduction of the Arabian leopard where key rewilding efforts include restoring indigenous flora and fauna and reintroducing prey species such as the Nubian ibex and Idmi gazelle that enhance the natural balance necessary for leopards to thrive. The Arabian Leopard is indigenous to AlUla and critically endangered Visitors to AlUla can experience the region’s stunning biodiversity, ancient rock carvings, and immersive cultural heritage while learning about challenges facing the Arabian leopard. Ecotourism initiatives, such as the 7km Arabian Leopard Celebration Trail—part of a global network of Catwalk Trails—allow guests to connect with nature while supporting conservation efforts. Nearby, the safari-style 4×4 Hegra Wildlife and Nature Tour is another way to learn about and possibly spot local wildlife across Alula. The Arabian Leopard is the smallest leopard subspecies Led by Her Highness Princess Abeer bint Saud Al Saud, Panthera Saudi Arabia also marks a massive step in the global mission to protect wild cats by forming partnerships with organizations such as the RCU to ensure the Arabian leopard’s long-term survival. Emphasizing the urgency of conservation efforts, Dr. Fred Launay, CEO of Panthera, says, ‘by safeguarding the Arabian leopard, we honor its legacy as a symbol of resilience and cultural heritage in Saudi Arabia.” But the Arabian Leopard Day and Arabian Leopard Week go beyond celebration—they serve as a call to action. By supporting conservation programs and promoting sustainable tourism in AlUla, visitors can contribute to the survival of this iconic species. With ongoing rewilding efforts, breeding programs and global collaboration, the dream of seeing Arabian leopards roam freely in the wild again may soon become a reality. 20. Everton 4-0 Leicester: David Moyes casts spell at Goodison Park Everton 4-0 Leicester: David Moyes casts spell at Goodison Park Saturday’s impressive performance in the 4-0 triumph against the woeful Foxes means Everton have now scored eight goals in their past three matches, all wins. It marks an incredible contrast to when Sean Dyche was in charge – only three of his 19 league games this season were won, with Everton failing to score in 11 of them. But the win lifted the Toffees up to 15th in the table, nine points clear of the relegation zone with a game in hand over the sides occupying the last four places. “A brilliant result,” said Moyes. “A great performance in many aspects; sometimes we didn’t play quite so well. If you had given me three wins out of four games in the position we are in, I would say ‘thanks very much’ but to score the goals and we could have got a couple more… We are doing a lot of really good things.” Supporters may have wanted games to end early while watching the often turgid and one-dimensional style of play deployed by Dyche, but one fan was left asking for “20 more minutes” when the fourth official’s board was held aloft in stoppage time. At full-time, goalscorer Beto acted as the cheerleader, rousing those in the Gwladys Street End, Moyes waved towards those in the main stand with a beaming smile on his face, while the home faithful were left singing the club’s ‘Spirit of the Blues’ anthem long after the final whistle. Injuries to Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Armando Broja and Youssef Chermiti left Beto as Everton’s only fit senior striker and the Portuguese stepped up when needed. “I’m really pleased for Beto,” Moyes said. “The people who have been here much longer than me will know more about Beto. I’m just getting to know him. “He is a great kid, works hard in training, tries to improve himself. Sometimes in life, you need an opportunity. Today, he got an opportunity and the receptions he got coming off the pitch was as good as we’ve heard here for a long time. “Good credit to him he stuck at it and took his two goals well.” Source link #Everton #Leicester #David #Moyes #casts #spell #Goodison #Park Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

  22. Is Broadcom Inc. (AVGO) the Most Promising Dividend Stock According to Hedge Funds? Is Broadcom Inc. (AVGO) the Most Promising Dividend Stock According to Hedge Funds? We recently compiled a list of the 10 Most Promising Dividend Stocks According to Hedge Funds. In this article, we are going to take a look at where Broadcom Inc. (NASDAQ:AVGO) stands against the other dividend stocks. During a time of great excitement about AI-driven capital gains, it’s crucial to remember that dividends have consistently played a vital role in total returns. Over the long term, dividends become even more significant. Looking back at the past few decades, approximately 55% of market returns from 1987 to the end of 2023 have come from reinvested dividends. Dividends are a long-term investment strategy, and the benefits take time to materialize. For example, a dollar invested in the broader market in 1927 without reinvesting dividends would be worth $243 today, but if dividends were reinvested, that same dollar would be worth $3,737. Fortunately, you don’t need a century to see the potential growth in dividend stocks, as the outlook for the near future is improving. According to a report by AGF Investments, in the second half of 2024, global monetary easing has led to lower bond yields, making fixed income less attractive compared to dividend-paying stocks. In addition, companies with high dividend payouts often have more leverage, and lower bond yields help them manage interest expenses, boosting their overall financial performance, which in turn would contribute to dividend growth. Also read: 8 Unstoppable Dividend Stocks to Invest in According to a report by J.P. Morgan, global equities are on the brink of a significant ******* of dividend growth, not just due to a cyclical rise in payouts but also because of a more permanent increase in dividend momentum. Over the past two decades, global dividends per share have grown at an annual rate of 5.6%, but J.P. Morgan’s analysts now predict this rate will accelerate to 7.6% in the future. The main factor driving this increased dividend growth is the low starting point for payout ratios (dividends relative to earnings). In 2020, during the pandemic, an unusual number of companies reduced their dividends. In fact, global dividends dropped by 12%, a sharper decline than during the Global Financial Crisis. This response was reasonable given the uncertain environment. Since then, equity markets have rebounded strongly, with earnings surging, particularly from Big Tech and, more recently, AI. Dividends, typically set by cautious boards, tend to lag behind earnings during these surges. As a result, payout ratios are now close to 25-year lows, meaning companies are paying out less than historical averages, as reported by J.P. Morgan. Simply returning to more typical payout levels could result in an additional 2% growth annually over the next five years. This recovery is already taking shape, as global dividend growth has outpaced earnings growth in seven of the past eight quarters. Story Continues Investors and analysts both support companies that have raised their payouts. Companies that consistently raise their dividends typically manage economic downturns better because they have strong business models, solid balance sheets, and promising earnings potential. These qualities make them attractive to investors, and historical data shows that the market tends to reward them. Stocks of companies that increase dividends often outperform the broader market while experiencing lower volatility. According to a report by AGF Investments, the companies in the broader market that grew their dividend between January 1990 and August 2024 grew by 12.1%, compared with an 11% return of companies that pay no dividends and a 10.8% return of dividend cutters. With market conditions improving, it’s not surprising that an increasing number of companies are beginning to pay dividends. Our Methodology: To compile this article, we first scanned a list of stocks known for their consistent dividend track records and sustained shareholder payouts over an extended *******. This group reflects stability and long-term performance in dividend payouts. From this list, we picked 10 companies with the highest number of hedge fund investors, according to Insider Monkey’s database of Q3 2024. The stocks are ranked in ascending order of the number of hedge funds having stakes in them. Why are we interested in the stocks that hedge funds pile into? The reason is simple: our research has shown that we can outperform the market by imitating the top stock picks of the best hedge funds. Our quarterly newsletter’s strategy selects 14 small-cap and large-cap stocks every quarter and has returned 275% since May 2014, beating its benchmark by 150 percentage points. 24. Ireland 27-22 England: Steve Borthwick plan crumbles in Dublin Ireland 27-22 England: Steve Borthwick plan crumbles in Dublin Amid the scars left by a life in the second row, Steve Borthwick has a good poker face. He doesn’t have many tells, keeping his emotions under tight rein and his thoughts to himself. But Tuesday was no bluff. By naming his team two days early, Borthwick put his cards on the table and challenged Ireland to prove him wrong. England stuck with Marcus Smith at fly-half and Freddie Steward at full-back, picked debutant Cadan Murley on the wing and bet the house on a back row of Ben Earl, Tom Curry and his twin brother Ben. The selection was a statement of intent; to win the air, to sap Ireland’s speed with a nuisance ground game and throw a defensive blanket over their attack. For 40 minutes, Borthwick’s plan paid out. England scored the opening try early as Smith ran back a kick, Ollie Lawrence busted a hole and Henry Slade’s cute grubber put the ball on a platter for Murley. Earl and the Twindaloo – ***** fans’ nickname for the Curry brothers – were causing Ireland’s attack indigestion. They steamed into the breakdown, slowing the ball as potential attackers were drawn in to secure the supply lines. The defence was up flat and fast, scattering Ireland’s attacking patterns. And by shortening the line-out – a potential area of weakness – they thinned out Ireland’s thicket of jumpers. New skipper Maro Itoje showed his captaincy smarts, making sure that Ben O’Keeffe saw and heard the sly hold that Tadhg Beirne had of his leg, leaving the referee no option but to chalk off an Ireland try. It was promising. Having trailed at the break in every Six Nations match last year, England reached 40 minutes five ahead. It could have been even better. They were hobbled by Smith’s sin-binning for 10 minutes. After some courageous defence it was only on the last passage of that power-play that Ireland managed to score, as James Lowe shrugged off Alex Mitchell like a wet cagoule to put in Jamison Gibson Park. The Aviva jangled with nerves at the interval. Memories of 2019, when an unfancied England side plotted the perfect opening-day heist to derail Ireland, suddenly seemed more vivid. By full-time though they, like England, had disintegrated. Source link #Ireland #England #Steve #Borthwick #plan #crumbles #Dublin Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
