  2. I was married to my ex for 15 years and never remarried. If he dies, can I collect his higher survivor benefits? I was married to my ex for 15 years and never remarried. If he dies, can I collect his higher survivor benefits? I was married to my ex for 15 years and never remarried. If he dies, can I collect his higher survivor benefits? The average American is likely to have a few knowledge gaps when it comes to their Social Security benefits. Walking through specific scenarios can help answer how Social Security would be applied in unique cases. Let’s say Anna was married for 15 years and never remarried after her divorce. Now that she’s retired, she’s collecting her Social Security retirement benefit based on her own earnings record. Along with her personal savings, it’s enough to get by. But with the rising cost of living, she’s wondering if she has any other options. Her ex-husband isn’t in the best of health, and Anna wants to know if she would be eligible for his higher survivor benefits if he passes away before she does — even though he’s now remarried. While she has an amicable relationship with her ex, she doesn’t feel comfortable approaching him (or his new wife) about the topic, either. Her situation isn’t uncommon, as women tend to outlive men by an average of about five years. Women, on average, also make less money than men (16% less, according to the U.S. Department of Labor) and can have shorter work histories if they’ve taken time off for maternity leave and child care. As a result, men tend to have higher retirement benefits than women, with an average monthly benefit of $1,853.68 for men at age 67 versus $1,478.02 for women at the same age, according to an analysis of Social Security Administration (SSA) data. Fortunately for Anna, she may be able to receive higher benefits based on her ex’s Social Security record, as long as she meets a few key criteria. Survivor benefits are paid monthly to eligible family members of a deceased beneficiary. So, whether you’re a spouse or ex-spouse, you can be eligible, so long as you meet the criteria outlined by the SSA. Anna’s benefit amount would be calculated using the deceased worker’s basic benefit amount, based on their earnings record (so long as that person paid into the system through Social Security taxes). If she’s 65 or older, she may also receive Medicare based on her ex’s work history. Story Continues Since they were married for more than 10 years and Anna is currently unmarried (and would only potentially remarry after 60), she may be eligible for survivor benefits. Anna is also at least 62, as she’s collecting her retirement benefits already, so she meets the spousal 60 plus age requirement for survivor benefits (or 50 if you live with a disability), but if she was caring for the deceased’s child, she may be eligible regardless of these other criteria. Anna would have to choose between her own retirement benefit or her survivor benefit, though (after her ex-husband has passed away, of course). She can’t receive two benefits at the same time — but this can work in her favor. The SSA says she could choose to start with her survivor benefit and then switch to her retired worker benefit at age 70 when she’d be able to receive the highest amount. Read more: Rich, young Americans are ditching the stormy stock market — here are the alternative assets they’re banking on instead If your ex-spouse passes away and you claim your survivor benefit before full retirement age (FRA), you’ll receive a reduced benefit. For spouses and ex-spouses, payments start at 71.5% of the deceased’s benefit. According to the SSA, the amount of your survivor benefit will increase by age, and you can be eligible for the following percentages of your ex-spouse’s benefit: Age 61: over 75% Age 63: over 80% Age 65: over 90% FRA: up to 100% If you’re still employed, you may be subject to an earnings limit (depending on your age). That means your survivor benefit would be reduced — though temporarily — if you earn above that limit in a year. As mentioned, you can file for survivor benefits at age 60 and then switch to your own retirement benefit later, between ages 62 and 70. But you could also claim your retirement benefit first and file for survivor benefits at FRA — if that benefit would be higher. Anna may choose to contact the SSA to discuss her future options — and she can rest easy knowing her ex-husband won’t be notified of it. So, if her ex-husband passes away, Anna could be eligible for survivor benefits, but she’ll only want to collect them if the payments are higher than her current retirement benefit. Fortunately, if she does qualify, her benefit won’t impact the benefit amount paid out to other survivors, such as a current surviving spouse. 4. From Horror in Nigeria to North Korea: Report Exposes Global Terror Against Believers From Horror in Nigeria to North Korea: Report Exposes Global Terror Against Believers A persecution watchdog has released a new report that aims to fill a “gap” when it comes to fully reporting on the Christian persecution raging across the globe. “We found was there needed to be a report that was based entirely on well verified, carefully reviewed sources,” Isaac Six, senior director of advocacy for Global Christian Relief (GCR), told CBN News. “These are public sources that are included in a database we’ve commissioned called the Violent Incidents Database, and the report is built on that database.” Listen to the latest episode of “Quick Start” One of the issues with some of the other reports in this realm, Six said, is that they are relatively qualitative in nature, relying on interviews and available numbers to essentially “make an estimate.” While this is valid and helpful, he said GCR’s new “Red List” works a bit differently. “Our report numbers can seem a little lower than some of those, but that’s because we’re only using numbers we can absolutely verify are true,” he said, noting the “Red List” provides data over a two-year ******* that is heavily verified and “irrefutable.” The methodology even enabled the researchers to confirm a few hundred of the arrests that have unfolded in North Korea, a reclusive nation known for being the worst persecutor of Christians across the globe — and that’s not all. “We were able to confirm that Afghanistan, since the takeover of the Taliban, is almost a closed box,” Six said. “Everything is underground. We do have networks there, but it’s very difficult to get any public verified reporting of persecution.” Watch Six explain: And while there are many types of persecution and pressures placed on believers, Six said violence is the “primary method through which persecutors are trying to drive out the church.” “This isn’t just random, sporadic acts of anger or violence towards Christians,” he said. “In a lot of these cases, this is well-organized, systematic, long-term, and the overarching goal here is to crush the church and extinguish it. It’s an existential crisis for a lot of these communities that we’re talking about in this report.” One of the unique facets of the “Red List” is that nations are ranked not just by overall persecution metrics but by categories. Killings are just one such category, with Nigeria, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Mozambique, Ethiopia, and Russia serving as the top five on the list. As CBN News has reported, Nigeria is consistently found by watchdogs to be the most deadly nation for believers. The “Red List” is no exception, with the numbers found in the report quite staggering. “We documented almost 10,000 killings of Christians, mostly in the north and middle part of that country,” Six said. “And, again, that is systematic violence being perpetrated and led by groups like Boko Haram, and Islamic State West Africa Province, and then other armed groups.” Ultimately, Isaac said Christians in America need to understand the extent of the terror. “The church in America really has to hear how horrific some of these stories are,” he said. “It’s not just violence. It’s not just killings. It is brutal atrocities. And, frankly, the church has to wake up to some of this. Only a fraction of believers in America are even aware of what’s happening.” Six also addressed Russia’s placement in the top five for killings. “Russia … appears twice on a report, both for killings and also for arrests,” Six said. “Now, the killings are primarily happening in an area called Dagestan, which is in the North Caucasus region of Russia. It borders Georgia and Azerbaijan, the Caspian Sea.” He continued, “And, in Dagestan, you have an Islamist militancy that’s …targeting Orthodox Russian Christians; it will target priests and churches. So that’s where most of those killings are happening.” Six said some of the killings are also happening in occupied areas of Eastern Ukraine, as the Russia-Ukraine war continues to rage. “Many parts of the church are going underground in Eastern Ukraine,” he said. Six is hoping the “Red List” is a valuable resource – one that helps people navigate and understand these persistent issues of persecution. “When I looked over the report and finally saw the numbers [I thought], ‘There is so much here for us to do,’” he said. “We’ve been working in this area and we get very focused on some areas where there’s great need and that’s good. … But I looked at it and thought, ‘We need a wave of support and prayer coming out of the American church and the global church for the areas where the body of Christ is just being attacked in the worst possible ways.’” With those areas now identified in the “Red List,” prayer and action can more readily be taken — and with more spiritual and practical precision. 8. INTERVIEW: FaZe aBeZy and Cellium Talk Dominance – ‘No One Can Beat Us’ INTERVIEW: FaZe aBeZy and Cellium Talk Dominance – ‘No One Can Beat Us’ Atlanta FaZe just secured a 3 – 0 victory over Toronto Ultra to push one step forward at the CDL Madrid Major. The massive victory forced Ultra into the elimination bracket to square off against the Royal Ravens – their last chance at staying in the running. Following the sweep of a match, I sat down with Atlanta FaZe’s Tyler ‘aBeZy’ Pharris and McArthur ‘Cellium’ Jovel to talk about their nine-game win streak, playing more aggressively this season, and how they bounced back from a rough start. ‘I Was Underperforming’ Atlanta FaZe didn’t have the cleanest start to the 2025 CDL season. The squad suffered a 0 – 3 loss in a qualifying stage for the first time since May 2023. That decisive defeat was handed down by the Carolina Royal Ravens, a team that has been on fire so far in 2025. From there, FaZe lost three matches back-to-back-to-back before taking a break and turning things around. Presently, the team is on a near-historic nine-match win streak, almost refusing to drop a map in any series. I caught up with Cellium and aBeZy to chat about the change-up: Cellium: For me personally, I was underperforming really badly. There were a lot of internal team talks about how we play the game and how we think about everything, and I think it definitely helped us improve over the break. Everyone is on the same page now and we trust each other. aBeZy: We had a team talk after the break, leading after the Falcons match that we won. We put everything on the table and after that, we’ve just been firing on all cylinders. Like he said, we just trust each other in every situation that we’re in and we’re just frying. The talk turned to a recent comment made by Drazah, who wasn’t present for the chat. He’d previously said that ATL would take on ‘anyone, anytime’, suggesting the strategy had now turned to aggression. I asked aBeZy and Cellium if that was the case: aBeZy: Yeah, 100%. I don’t think it matters who we play. I feel like if we’re playing at our best, I feel like no one can beat us. Cellium mirrored that sentiment, echoing with the claim: ‘I just think we’re the best team right now, by a mile.’ For the third time in two days, I asked the Call of Duty League pros what they thought about the crowds supporting the tournament here in Madrid. Thus far, OpTic Texas and LA Thieves have agreed that the EU crowds are on another level compared to NA, and that was supported by the Atlanta FaZe guys: aBeZy: I think EU crowds are insane … Even this crowd is crazy. Cellium: Both times I’ve went to Europe so far, it has been amazing. I would use the EU crowd is insane. Atlanta FaZe now pushes into the winner’s final against the LA Thieves, which is set to take place tomorrow evening. The loser of that match will be pushed down into the elimination bracket for a final chance to go forward, and they’ll be taking on either Toronto, Carolina, Miami, or Minnesota. 11. Trump says he ordered precision military air strikes on ISIS leaders in Somalia Trump says he ordered precision military air strikes on ISIS leaders in Somalia The U.S. military conducted coordinated airstrikes against ISIS operatives in Somalia, the first attacks in the African nation during President Trump’s second term. Mr. Trump said Saturday in a post on Truth Social that he ordered “precision Military air strikes on the Senior ISIS Attack Planner and other terrorists he recruited and led in Somalia.” “These killers, who we found hiding in caves, threatened the United States and our Allies,” the post continued. “The strikes destroyed the caves they live in, and killed many terrorists without, in any way, harming civilians.” On Saturday, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said the strikes by U.S. Africa Command were directed by Mr. Trump and coordinated with Somalia’s government. “Our initial assessment is that multiple operatives were killed in the airstrikes and no civilians were harmed,” Hegseth said in a statement. “This action further degrades ISIS’s ability to plot and conduct terrorist attacks threatening U.S. citizens, our partners, and innocent civilians and sends a clear signal that the United States always stands ready to find and eliminate terrorists who threaten the United States and our allies, even as we conduct robust border-protection and many other operations under President Trump’s leadership,” the statement read. Trump did not identify the ISIS planner or say whether that person was killed in the strike. The Pentagon’s counterterrorism strategy in Africa has been strained as two key partners, Chad and ******, ousted U.S. forces last year and took over key bases that the U.S. military had used to train and conduct missions against terrorist groups across the Sahel, the vast arid expanse south of the Sahara Desert. U.S. military officials have warned that ISIS cells have received increasing direction from the group’s leadership that relocated to northern Somalia. That has included how to kidnap Westerners for ransom, how to learn better military tactics, how to hide from drones and how to build their own small quadcopters. A U.S. military airstrike in Somalia last May targeted ISIS militants and killed three, according to U.S. Africa Command. The number of ISIS militants in the country is estimated to be in the hundreds, mostly scattered in the Cal Miskaat mountains in Puntland’s Bari region, according to the International Crisis Group. 12. American company announces game-changing battery technology with unprecedented power — here’s how it could unlock next-gen energy storage American company announces game-changing battery technology with unprecedented power — here’s how it could unlock next-gen energy storage Coast-to-coast silicon cooperation detailed in a release from PR Newswire has the potential to lower costs and improve battery performance for aviation, electronics, electric vehicles, and grid storage — all by 2027. That’s because New York-based company Sionic Energy’s 100% silicon anode leverages patented silicon-carbon composite developed by Washington’s Group14 Technologies, per the release. Group14 has been in the news recently for its silicon innovations, as well. “Having worked extensively with several leading silicon materials in our product designs over the past several years, we’ve chosen Group14 as the best-in-class performer to launch our Silicon Battery Platform,” Sionic CEO Ed Williams said in the written message. Silicon is an abundant material being developed by companies — including big ones like Panasonic — to be a cheaper, better-working anode base than commonly used graphite. That, along with “seamless manufacturing integration,” is part of the way Sionic can cut costs by up to 30%, according to the company’s website. When batteries operate, ions move between the anode and cathode through a substance called the electrolyte. Sionic’s version includes additives that improve safety, stabilize voltage, and mitigate dreaded thermal runaway, a failure in pack cells that can lead to rare yet serious fires. Watch now: CEO reveals form of energy that has ‘polled across political lines’ for over a decade Sionic’s batteries have tested well during 1,200 cycles with an up to 50% energy density boost, according to the company. That’s the amount of electricity the pack can store per pound. The latest tech can be configured for cylindrical, pouch, and prismatic cell designs, offering flexibility, according to the news release. Part of Sionic’s breakthrough is addressing some key silicon hurdles. While the material can store 10 times the energy as graphite, it’s also prone to troublesome expansion and failure, as detailed here by ScienceDirect. Sionic said that its tech can limit expansion to less than 10%. Brilliant battery innovations are being developed around the world that unlock the potential of more affordable materials, thereby lessening dependence on foreign supply chains. China, for reference, dominates global graphite production, according to data collector Statista. For their part, Sionic’s leaders said that they plan for their packs to be powering aviation and electronics this year; EVs by 2026; and used for grid storage by 2027, per the website. The company was started with expertise from Cornell scientists in 2011 and was originally called NOHMs Technologies. The benefits can be great, because each EV that replaces a gas-burning car prevents thousands of pounds of harmful, heat-trapping air pollution annually, per U.S. government data. You can save up to $1,500 per year in gas and maintenance costs, too. Even e-bikes, which are already widely available, can save you hundreds of dollars per year if you park your gas car in favor of the two-wheeled ride five times a week. The bikes offer fresh transportation, as government experts have linked vehicle exhaust to various health risks. While a federal bill providing tax breaks for e-bikes is stalled in the House, many states offer credits to help with the purchase, according to Colorado nonprofit PeopleForBikes. Valuable tax incentives for EVs worth up to $7,500 are still available, as well. And more of the batteries powering the e-bikes, EVs, and other machines could soon include silicon anodes, courtesy of Sionic and Group14. “Group14’s customers continue to raise the bar for battery performance, and we are pleased to support Sionic’s silicon batteries,” co-founder Rick Costantino said in the news release. 14. Hundreds of new families added to review Hundreds of new families added to review Rob Sissons BBC News, Nottingham Isaac Ashe BBC News, East Midlands BBC Donna Ockenden has been leading a review since 2022 Hundreds of new families will be included in the ***’s largest review into maternity failings, delaying the findings until 2026. Senior midwife Donna Ockenden began an inquiry in September 2022 to investigate stillbirths, neonatal deaths, injured babies and mothers, and maternal deaths at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust (NUH). The review had registered more than 2,000 cases dating back to 2012 and had hoped to be able to reveal its findings by September, however this has now been pushed back to June 2026 with the hospitals trust saying it “supported the decision”. It comes as Nottinghamshire Police also said it had launched a second investigation after a file containing maternity documents had been deleted. The review will now look at about 2,500 cases, Mc Ockenden said On Saturday, families involved in the review were told 300 more cases will be added to the inquiry after a discrepancy was noted by a coroner. As a result, the NUH appointed an individual to look into the matter, and a computer file had been created as part of their work. However, a spokesperson for Nottinghamshire Police said “that file came to be deleted”, prompting an investigation. NUH said the file was reported as deleted in July 2024 and has since been “fully restored”. The trust said two investigations, one internal and one by the counter fraud team, had been unable to determine the cause of the deletion. Anthony May, NUH chief executive, said the trust is treating the loss “extremely seriously” and is working with police. He added: “We have put the appropriate measures in place to secure the digital files so that this cannot happen again.” All the cases are being reviewed by more than 120 clinical reviewers across the country, and the team of experts will be expanded now the fresh cases have come to light. Commenting on the delay, Ms Ockenden said: “We now expect that the review will have around 2,500 families in it and publication of our final report with the extra cases will need to move.” Mr May said he supported the decision to extend the review to include the new families. “Since the start of the review in September 2022, we have worked closely with Donna Ockenden and her team, and this will continue through to the report’s publication and beyond,” he said. “While the review is ongoing, we will continue to do everything we can to improve our maternity services further.” Analysis By Rob Sissons, East Midlands health correspondent The Nottingham review into maternity failings at the city’s hospitals was already the biggest in NHS history, even before news that around 300 new cases are to be added. The concerns about missing cases appear to have been first raised by the Nottinghamshire coroner and it’s in response to that the trust appointed someone to look into it The loss of a file they set up containing details of some baby deaths raises some big questions. The main question of course is why did this data go missing for days, albeit temporarily? At the meeting in Nottingham organised by Donna Ockenden to update them on her review, families were speculating as to why the data may have vanished. It’s now left to the police to confirm whether or not it was an IT glitch, human error, or something more sinister involving a deliberate loss of the material. The computer investigation involves Nottinghamshire Police’s specialist cyber security experts and is running separate to Operation Perth which is the main investigation into whether there has been any criminality in maternity services through the years. We’re going to get him wifed-up.” The day one judge, and the I Said Hi singer, will take their seats on the panel alongside controversial radio personality Kyle Sandilands who was first introduced to the show as a judge in 2005. Despite his hardened industry exterior and “filthy sense of humour”, Ricki-Lee describes Sandilands as “a sensitive, emotional man with a big heart”. In old friend Shark, the two did not need to be reacquainted. “I went to school with Amy, we’ve been friends since we were in primary school,” the songwriter revealed. However, it’s American-born Hines — who first arrived on our shores in 1970 as a teenage star of the *********** production of Hair — who Ricki-Lee views as her kindred spirit. The 18-year-old, who grew up in Kalamunda, was a champion trampolinist and came agonisingly close to an Olympic appearance before a devastating injury derailed his career. Offering advice to emerging talents like Van Beek, Ricki-Lee suggested that stardom is like an iceberg: The world only sees a fraction of the work. “I think people think it’s very glamorous, but it’s hard work, it’s non stop, constant, never ending. There’s always something going on,” Ricki-Lee said. “That’s probably what people don’t see.” Source link #*********** #Idol #cohost #RickiLee #Coulter #reveals #gen #performers Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

  18. Skinnier models picked for Paris Fashion Week Skinnier models picked for Paris Fashion Week Sebastian Reuter/Getty Images Namilia shocked audiences with a controversial “I love Ozempic” T-shirt at Berlin Fashion Week in 2024 – the brand says it was being satirical The high fashion industry has always been synonymous with thinness, but for a brief moment in the 2010s, the body positivity movement was at the forefront. It promised a revolution of accepting bodies of all shapes and sizes, welcomed curves and advocated for inclusion, particularly on the runway. But 10 years on, industry insiders tell us things have shifted. Was body positivity a flash-in-the-pan trend? And with help with weight loss medication such as Ozempic, is skinny back for good? We speak to designers, casting agents and models at Paris Fashion Week to investigate what is happening. The 2010s: The era of body positivityANGELA WEISS/AFP via Getty Images Ashley Graham was the first “curve” model on the cover of the annual swimsuit issue of Sports Illustrated in 2015. Here she is walking the Addition Elle runway during New York Fashion Week 2017. The body positivity movement finds its origins in the hazy days of the 1960s and was helped by icons like Marilyn Monroe who broadened Hollywood’s rigid beauty standard. It was brought to the forefront again in the 2010s, when Instagram was launched and influencers began to highlight fashion and beauty outside of the glossy magazines and runways. Helping this was the celebrity Kardashian family, whose curves triggered BBLs (Brazilian butt lift surgery) around the world. Enrika, a 28-year-old plus-sized model, said: “When the body positivity movement emerged, it felt incredibly empowering and liberating.” “It felt like an act of rebellion – what had always been criticised was now being appreciated. It was as if we had finally had enough of being judged.” Enrika/Gingersnap Models Enrika was scouted as a plus-sized model during the 2010s Plus-size models were being booked for big brands, including Rihanna’s highly coveted lingerie label, ‘Savage x Fenty’ which launched in 2018. The brand, valued at $1bn, became known for its runway extravaganzas, reminiscent of a modern alternative to the iconic Victoria’s Secret shows, but this time with every body type on display. Kevin Mazur/Getty Images for Savage X Fenty Show Vol. 2 Presented by Amazon Prime Video) Savage x Fenty shows combine the runway with dance and musical performances from artists like Rosalía Felicity Hayward, a 36-year-old plus-sized model, reflects on being scouted in 2011. “When I got that call from my first modelling agency Storm – who discovered Kate Moss – I thought I was being punk’d,” she said. “Before the 2010s, attitudes around ******* bodies weren’t positive and I never thought being a plus-size model was a possibility. “Seeing that narrative change over the last decade and a half has been life changing both emotionally, physically and financially.” Felicity Hayward, The Milk Collective Plus-sized model Felicity Hayward was scouted in the 2010s in an East London pub, dancing to Diana Ross. She was cast as Anna Nicole Smith for a shoot with Miles Aldridge. The 2020s: The era of Ozempic But then around 2020, progress started to slow. And come the Autumn/Winter of 2024, of the 8,800 looks across 230 shows, just 0.8 per cent were on plus-size models, Vogue reports At the same time, a new weight loss drug used to treat diabetes came onto the market and skyrocketed in popularity. Semaglutide, also known as Ozempic, Mounjaro and Wegovy, curbs the appetite of users, and was approved by the NHS for weight loss in 2023. Celebrities including Elon Musk started crediting the drug for their newly slim frame and it was only a matter of time before that trickled down to consumers. Elon Musk/Eva McMillan/X Elon Musk credited Wegovy (Ozempic) for his weight loss on X As Ozempic and its counterparts become more commercially available for aesthetic purposes, industry insiders claim it has affected the body positivity movement. A former model, Moya, said: “We’ve seen how quickly the narrative shifted, with celebrities and influencers using surgeries or medication like Ozempic to chase what’s considered ‘in Vogue’.” Another model, Jenny, said: “When I realised skinny was back, it was positive because I was going to get more jobs. “But I’ve realised it means now I have to keep up. Now I have to be the skinniest.” Even the editorial director of British Vogue said that the fashion industry “should be concerned” by a recent trend back to using more skinny models Chioma Nnadi told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme: “I do think maybe perhaps Ozempic has something to do with it.” “We’re in this moment where we’re seeing the pendulum sort of swing back to skinny being ‘in’ and often these things are treated like a trend and we don’t want them to be.” Then Berlin brand, Namilia, went viral for an “I love Ozempic” T-shirt on their Fashion Week runway. “The ‘I love Ozempic’ tee really hit a nerve,” laughed Nan Li, the brand’s creative director who claims the T-shirt was satire. “With the rise of Ozempic, so many people are using it. Over the last few years, celebrities just lost weight and didn’t talk about it.” Paris Fashion Week 2025 Fast-forward to January, when Men’s AW25 Fashion Week lands in Paris and audiences get a litmus test in real-time of exactly where brands stand. Aside from a selection of designers, including Rick Owens, LGN and Charles Jeffrey LOVERBOY, I can count on two hands how many plus-sized models I saw at a week of shows. Nan Li said: “Paris celebrates elitism, and elitism means skinny and white.” “There’s a handful of plus-sized models [at the shows] but they’re not really plus – they’re normal-sized. They are cast in every show to make the brand appear body positive.” Victor Boyko/Getty Images A model for Louis Gabriel Nouchi at the latest Paris Fashion Week show Amidst the hustle and bustle of fashion week, Shaun Beyen, casting director for iconic French brand Fursac, told the BBC: “The only motivation for a brand is to sell clothes – that’s it. I don’t think we need to lie about this. “Brands adopted body positivity in the 2010s because in part they saw it as a commercial opportunity, and when they saw it was no longer performing as they would hope in 2020, they hopped off.” Beyen added: “Full transparency – I don’t really want to see clothes on someone like me. I want to see it on somebody I aspire to look like.” Gauthier Borsarello, Fursac’s creative director, laughed in agreement and said: “I hate my body. I don’t want to see clothes on people like me.” Antoine Flament/Getty Images Amiri was amongst the brands to showcase their collection in Paris this January On the other hand, designers like Charles Jeffrey believe brands have a moral imperative to cast inclusively. “Body positivity was never a trend for me,” he said. “It was an opportunity to start being responsible.” Body positivity is knitted into the very fabric of Charles’ brand, which takes inspiration from the ****** nightlife scene. This is readily apparent throughout his Paris Fashion Week show. The designer explained: “The people in my shows are people I was clubbing with. It was never about models, it was my friends and their different body shapes. It was about the community I surrounded myself with.” Purple PR/Charles Jeffrey Loverboy Charles Jeffrey, of Charles Jeffrey LOVERBOY says: “There’s a whole culture in casting that I’ve never been associated with, and nor do I want to be” What do industry insiders say? It seem the reality is that designers like Charles are the exception to the rule. As much as activists resist it, industry insiders confirm that body positivity is behind us. Daniel Mitchell-Jones, co-founder of modelling agency Chapter Management, said: “Yes, things have shifted. In 2020 and 2021, we saw so much more diversity and inclusion on the runways – but body-wise, that’s taken a ********* now.” Daniel said when he sends his curve models to castings, they’re always pushed, but is often told the brand isn’t interested this season. Antoine Flament/Getty Images A model at 032c’s Paris Fashion Week 2025 runway show. Plus-size model Enrika told the BBC that not only are plus-sized models being booked less, their agents are actively struggling to secure work for them. She explained: “It’s not unusual to see campaigns featuring four sample-size models and only one plus-size model. This can make you feel like you’re just a token.” Enrika said these brands sometimes often use tactics in campaigns to virtue-signal being inclusive – such as highlighting stretch marks on plus-sized models, whilst airbrushing them on others. She said: “It sends the message that ‘We don’t actually think you look as good as the slim models in our skirt. But we accept you because we are such kind-hearted good people, so please give us your hard-earned money’, it’s ****** work and I don’t support it.” Peter White/Getty Images Models walk the runway for Louis Gabriel Nouchi in Paris If you want change, change your buying habits. At least, that’s what Shaun Beyen, believes: “Everything is consumer-driven”. “It’s this kind of vicious circle. Every fashion house gives their version of what they know the customer wants, it’s their interpretation and it’s up to the consumer.” Gauthier Borsarello said: “There’s a famous French saying: ‘If people stop producing, people will stop buying.’ But the inverse is true. If people stop buying, we stop producing. “No-one is forcing you to do anything. It’s an education of the customer: In a polite way – educate yourself.” And the one benefit of bodies as trends is that the pendulum will eventually swing back. Beyen said: “Nothing is ever gone, especially not in fashion.” Source link #Skinnier #models #picked #Paris #Fashion #Week Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  19. Rubio off to Central America with Panama Canal and immigration top of mind – National Rubio off to Central America with Panama Canal and immigration top of mind – National Secretary of State Marco Rubio embarks this weekend on his first foreign trip in office, heading to Central America to press President Donald Trump’s top priority — curbing ******** immigration — and bring the message that the U.S. wants to reclaim control over the Panama Canal despite intense resistance from regional leaders. It’s an unusual destination for the maiden voyage of America’s top diplomat, whose predecessors have generally favored Europe or Asia for their initial outings. It reflects not only the personal interest that Rubio — the first Hispanic to hold the nation’s most senior Cabinet post — has in the region but also the Trump administration’s intent to focus much of its foreign policy energy close to home. “It’s no accident that my first trip abroad as secretary of state will keep me in the hemisphere,” Rubio wrote in The Wall Street Journal on Friday. Limiting immigration and fighting narcotics smuggling are major elements of that effort, but another key priority will be curbing China’s growing influence in the Western Hemisphere, topped by reasserting U.S. control over the Panama Canal. The American-built canal was turned over to the Panamanians in 1999 and they object strongly to Trump’s demand to hand it back. Story continues below advertisement Mass migration, drugs and hostile policies pursued by Cuba, Nicaragua and Venezuela have wreaked havoc, Rubio said in the Journal opinion piece. “All the while, the ******** ********** Party uses diplomatic and economic leverage — such as at the Panama Canal — to oppose the U.S. and turn sovereign nations into vassal states.” Indeed, Rubio’s first stop on the five-nation tour Saturday will be Panama, whose president, José Raúl Mulino, says there will be no negotiation with the United States over ownership of the canal. He said he hoped Rubio’s visit would instead focus on shared interests like migration and combating drug trafficking. “It’s impossible, I can’t negotiate,” Mulino said Thursday. “The canal belongs to Panama.” Yet Rubio said he will make clear Trump’s intent. In an interview Thursday with SiriusXM host Megyn Kelly, he said Trump’s desire to retake control of the Panama Canal is driven by legitimate national security interests stemming from growing concerns about ******** activity and influence in Latin America. Get breaking National news For news impacting Canada and around the world, sign up for breaking news alerts delivered directly to you when they happen. “We’re going to address that topic,” he said. “The president’s been pretty clear he wants to administer the canal again. Obviously, the Panamanians are not big fans of that idea. That message has been brought very clear.” 1:43 Protesters burn Trump effigy over threat to take control of Panama Canal ******** investments in ports and other infrastructure and facilities at both the Pacific and Caribbean ends of the canal are a cause for major concern, leaving Panama and the critical shipping route vulnerable to China, he said. Story continues below advertisement Rubio added that “if China wanted to obstruct traffic in the Panama Canal, they could,” and that would be a violation of the 1977 treaty signed by former President Jimmy Carter under which the U.S. later ceded control. Despite Mulino’s rejection of any negotiation over ownership, some believe Panama may be open to a compromise under which canal operations on both sides are taken away from the Hong Kong-based Hutchison Ports company that was given a 25-year no-bid extension to run them. An audit into the suitability of that extension is already under way and could lead to a rebidding process. More on World More videos What is unclear is whether Trump would accept the transfer of the concession to an American or European firm as meeting his demands, which appear to cover more than just operations. Trending Now What ex-security officials think of Pierre Poilievre’s top secret security stance Plane with 6 aboard crashes in Philadelphia, setting homes ablaze and unleashing a fireball “In some ways, Trump is pushing on an open door,” said Ryan Berg, director of the Americas program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, a Washington think tank. “But it will depend on how his red lines are defined.” “There’s been a lot of heavy rhetoric and it will be up Rubio to clarify it,” Berg said, adding that some kind of compromise was possible “but we’ll have to see if he’s really serious about taking it back. If that’s the case then nothing short of that will satisfy him.” Rubio will arrive in Panama on Saturday for meetings the following day with Mulino and the canal administrator. He will then travel to El Salvador, Costa Rica, Guatemala and the Dominican Republic. Story continues below advertisement His arrival will come just a day after the U.S. resumed visa processing at its embassy in Bogota, Colombia, which had been shut down Sunday after the Colombian government refused to accept two planeloads of Colombian deportees from the United States. Previous secretaries of state have often traveled abroad with so-called “deliverables” — assistance packages, new cooperation initiatives and the like — that they can announce at each stop. However, such as with Colombia, Rubio may only be able to bring limited relief from a U.S. freeze on foreign assistance that Trump ordered pending a review of all programs. In Latin America, such programs have generally focused on policing, counternarcotics operations and efforts to stem ******** migration. Rubio has made provisions for certain programs offering life-saving assistance to be exempted from the funding pause, and waiver applications for programs in several of the countries he will be visiting are under review. Among the countries for which waivers for certain programs have been submitted are Panama, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic and its neighbor, Haiti. Although Rubio will not be traveling to Haiti, the State Department has already allowed some $41 million in support of an international peacekeeping force there to go ahead. 2:42 Donald Trump threatens to retake control of Panama Canal &copy 2025 The ********* Press Source link #Rubio #Central #America #Panama #Canal #immigration #top #mind #National Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content] For verified travel tips and real support, visit: [Hidden Content]

  24. Ken Martin wins election as the next chair of the Democratic National Committee Ken Martin wins election as the next chair of the Democratic National Committee Ken Martin, the longtime leader of the state Democratic Party organization in Minnesota, will be the new Democratic National Committee chair after winning Saturday’s election, as his party looks to turn the page and recover from a dismal 2024. Martin had been the frontrunner from the beginning of the race, leveraging his relationships with the more than 400 voting members of the DNC that he forged over more than a decade of work inside the institutional Democratic Party. The race hinged more on the candidates’ organizing and fundraising resumes instead of becoming a battle for the ideological soul of the party, as it did in 2017, after President Donald Trump’s previous election win. Martin was the more experienced hand with deep party relationships, Wisconsin Democratic Party Chairman Ben Wikler had been at the center of some of Democrats’ highest-profile races in recent years, and former Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley had unique electoral and government experience. Now, Martin will be tasked with helping to pull Democrats out of the hole where they ended 2024, a devastating election cycle that left them without any of the levers of power in Washington. But while Martin will help to lead the party forward, Democrats aren’t necessarily looking to him to be the party’s pre-eminent leader. “We’re a party out of power, so we don’t have a leader. And I think broadly, philosophically, someone could say that this person would be our party leader. That’s not really true,” said Matt Corridoni, a veteran Democratic strategist who has worked for the DNC in the past and also worked on a previous race for DNC chair. “I don’t know that anyone has ever really looked to the most recent DNC chairs and said, that person was a leader of our party,” Corridoni continued. That notion is not lost on Martin, who framed the chair role during his campaign as doing the important party-building work that will set the foundation for the party’s candidates to use up and down the ballot. “We have to tap into the rich, rich, rich diversity of elected officials we have throughout this country who are actually delivering on our party values right now,” Martin said. “The DNC chair is just one spokesperson, but we have so many other spokespeople out there we should be tapping into. Instead of sending celebrities out, we should send workers out to talk to workers, we should send out other folks out to talk who are trusted messengers and validators.” “My job is to get out there and define the Republicans,” Martin said. “I will take the low road so they can take the high road. I will throw the punches so they don’t have to, and we will go on offense against Donald Trump. That’s the role I will play as spokesperson, and I will also be the organizer-in-chief for our party.” The frontrunners were largely in agreement during the race about what the DNC needed to do to move forward: ensuring the party has the resources to contest every race across every state and territory, adopting a permanent organizational posture to help build relationships between the party and its potential voters, and taking a postmortem look at Democratic Party spending, after it fell short at the presidential level despite significantly outspending Trump and Republicans. All of the candidates also talked about pushing to bring their message to new media outlets while highlighting new messengers in part as a way to fix a deeper problem — Democratic underperformance with young and Hispanic voters. Throughout the race to succeed outgoing DNC chair Jaime Harrison, Martin framed himself as the experienced choice to take the reins of the party organization. Over a decade of experience leading the Minnesota party, he has regularly touted his unbeaten record in statewide races, arguing his state has been a Democratic beacon of hope while the party has taken important losses in other Midwestern “blue wall” states. As head of the Association of State Democratic Chairs and a vice chair of the national party committee, combined with his record, Martin had developed relationships with party members to help him shore up the votes needed to emerge victorious despite a last-minute push from Wikler. Those relationships helped Martin amass about 200 public endorsements from the voting body of the DNC, far more than any other candidate. And while Wikler touted support from top congressional Democrats, Martin snagged high-profile endorsements of his own, including Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, Democrats’ 2024 vice presidential nominee, and Rep. James Clyburn of South Carolina, the powerful congressman who helped jumpstart Joe Biden’s 2020 presidential bid. During a brief address to the DNC’s Poverty Council Thursday afternoon, Martin pointed to Trump’s implication that a focus on diversity, equity and inclusion programs were to blame for Wednesday night’s tragic aircraft collision in Washington, D.C. “We’ve got to unify quickly as a party because the stakes have never been higher for this nation. What we’ve seen these last two weeks is despicable. They’re shattering people’s lives, they’re destroying communities already two weeks into it,” Martin said, before going on to describe his childhood being raised by a young mother in poverty, “in and out of shelters.” “Our fight right now is for working people throughout this country,” Martin added. “Think about Donald Trump’s administration, their cabinet is worth $460 billion. Not the top 1%, the top 100th of 1%. You think they give a damn about people like me, people like you or working people and families like mine that are struggling? … Our fight right now is a fight for the future and it’s a fight for workers and it’s a fight for people who are trying to get into the middle class.” Source link #Ken #Martin #wins #election #chair #Democratic #National #Committee Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
