Where and when to see it Where and when to see it The night sky may be providing the best Valentine’s Day gift on Friday for Canada and some parts of the northern United States. The northern lights, also known as aurora borealis, may to be visible in a few northern states throughout Friday night if weather conditions allow. Though the colorful night-sky phenomenon is traditionally associated with the Earth’s poles, a solar storm that began earlier this week could make the display more widely visible. Here’s what to know about the northern lights and how to possibly catch a glimpse of them on Valentine’s Day night. Where will the northern lights be visible? Aurora norealis, also known as the northern lights, illuminate the sky in Haldimand County near Hamilton, Ontario, Canada on Oct. 10, 2024. According to the Space Weather Prediction Center’s experimental aurora viewline, the Valentine’s Day northern lights will largely be visible in Canada and Alaska. However, a thin red “viewline” representing the southern-most locations where the northern lights will be visible extends to: Washington (northeastern corner) Idaho (northern-most tip) North Dakota (entire state) Minnesota (northern half) Michigan (northern-most top) Maine (northwestern corner) The Space Weather Prediction Center’s experimental aurora viewline displays where the northern lights may be visible on Friday, Feb. 14, 2025. Want to keep a keen eye on the forecast? The Space Weather Prediction Center updates its aurora forecast every 30 minutes at swpc.noaa.gov/products/aurora-30-minute-forecast. When will the northern lights be visible? Assuming the weather is clear, the best time to see the northern lights is usually within an hour or two of midnight, so between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m., according to the Space Weather Prediction Center. This time tends to be the best for viewing as geomagnetic actively increases toward evening and morning. Folks hoping to catch a view should also find the darkest spot, away from city lights. Artificial lights and even the moon diminish the apparent brightness of the northern lights. What causes the northern lights? According to the University of Alaska Fairbanks Geophysical Institute, the northern lights are caused by collisions between electrically-charged particles that enter Earth’s atmosphere from space and collide with molecules and atoms of gas, like oxygen and nitrogen. As a result, the molecules gain energy. To return to their normal state, the molecules release energy in the form of light. As for the colors of the northern lights, these are determined by Earth’s atmosphere and the altitude of the molecular collisions, according to the University of Alaska Fairbanks Geophysical Institute. Typically, the northern lights give off a “striking green,” but reds, pinks, blues, purples, yellows and oranges can also be visible. Why is northern lights activity increasing? The northern lights are often associated with the Earth’s poles but recently, the natural display has been more visible throughout the United States. Now that our solar system’s sun is at the height of its 11-year solar cycle, there is an increase in solar activity that produces the right conditions for northern lights to flourish. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, some of this solar activity includes solar flares. Sometimes, solar flares are accompanied by highly-charged bubbles of the sun’s plasma, which comes from the sun’s outer atmosphere, the corona. As the bubbles radiate outward, they carry the sun’s magnetic field with them. When one of these bubbles collides with Earth’s magnetosphere, the barrier that protects the planet from space weather, a geomagnetic storm occurs. A geomagnetic storm tends to result in a visible northern lights. Contributing: Eric Lagatta, USA TODAY Greta Cross is a national trending reporter at USA TODAY. ‘A new sheriff in town’: JD Vance pushes Europe on migration, free speech – National ‘A new sheriff in town’: JD Vance pushes Europe on migration, free speech – National In a blistering speech on Friday, U.S. Vice-President JD Vance told European leaders “there is a new sheriff in town under Donald Trump’s leadership” and warned governments that internal threats to democracy, like election cancellations and censorship, are greater threats to their countries than external antagonists like China and Russia. “The threat that I worry the most about vis-à-vis Europe is not Russia, it’s not China, it’s not any other external actor,” Vance said, speaking at the Munich Security Conference. “What I worry about is the threat from within — the retreat of Europe from some of its most fundamental values, values shared with the United States of America. “I’ve heard a lot about what you need to defend yourselves from and of course, that’s important. But what has seemed a little bit less clear to me … is what exactly you’re defending yourselves for?” Story continues below advertisement In his own remarks to the conference, Vance lectured European officials on free speech and ******** migration on the continent, warning elected officials that they risk losing public support if they don’t quickly change course. He specifically targeted the December 2024 cancellation of Romania’s elections, which were annulled by the country’s top court after accusations of Russian meddling, dismissing worries of disinformation as “ugly Soviet-era words.” “Dismissing people, dismissing their concerns … shutting down media, shutting down elections … protects nothing. Does Monster Hunter Wilds Have Cross-Play And Cross-Save? Does Monster Hunter Wilds Have Cross-Play And Cross-Save? Monster Hunter Wilds launches with cross-play support, a first for Capcom’s long-running action game series. The steps you take to join with random strangers or team up with friends are rather different, though, as Wilds makes you jump through several hoops to add friends to your in-game list. Full cross-play might be a big step forward for Monster Hunter, but if you’re holding out for cross-progression as well, you’ll have to keep waiting. We’ve broken down how Monster Hunter Wilds’ cross-play works below, including what you need to do to play with friends. How cross-play support works in Monster Hunter Wilds Monster Hunter Wilds supports cross-play between PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5, and since it has cross-play turned on automatically, you don’t have to do anything special to get started. There are separate processes for playing in groups of random players or joining with friends, though. When you join or post a quest, Monster Hunter Wilds puts you in a lobby with up to 100 other players. You can join any posted quest or wait for others to join yours. You need to invite friends from your platform’s friend list or use a link code Wilds generates for you, and once they’ve joined your party, you can add them to your Hunter Friends list. The steps involved might change in the full release, but during Wilds’ open beta, you could do that by: Opening the communications tab Choosing Link Party Clicking a friend’s name in the Link Member section Sending a friend request They’ll stay in your Hunter Friends list after they accept the request. Inviting friends from other platforms comes with additional steps. You can send them your Hunter ID, which lives under the Hunter Profile menu in the Info tab, or invite them using their ID. The steps in the beta were: In the Communication menu, choose Player List and Hunter ID Search Input your friend’s ID Choose their name, and send a friend request The method might change in the full launch version, though. Speak to Alma, the quest manager, at your campsite to post a quest, and any friend in your party will instantly receive the notification and a prompt to join. Is there cross-save progression in Monster Hunter Wilds? Capcom said Monster Hunter Wilds will not support cross-save progression. All DLC, story progress, and character data will remain locked to the platform where you first start playing Monster Hunter Wilds, so if you pick it up on a different platform, you’ll have to start over. RFK Jr. is sworn in, but he’ll face challenges trying to “Make America Healthy Again” RFK Jr. is sworn in, but he’ll face challenges trying to “Make America Healthy Again” Robert F. Kennedy Jr. was confirmed and sworn in as secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services this week, but his promise to “Make America Healthy Again” may prove challenging to achieve — due both to the limits of his role as well as actions already being taken by the administration to make cuts to health agencies. On CBS News 24/7 Friday, Dr. Céline Gounder, CBS News medical contributor and editor-at-large for public health at KFF Health News, said widespread firings at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, ordered by the Trump administration, could hamper progress on health issues for years to come. “Over 1,200 (new hires) are expected to be fired,” she said. “…That’s a huge proportion of the CDC workforce.” Beyond that, she said, “Another group that is being targeted here are senior scientists. These are some of the top of the top talent, and then also the very youngest, the pipeline of new talent. And so this is very concerning when you have your top talent, your new talent, being fired in one big purge.” How CDC cuts could affect Americans and their health These firings come as the nation is currently dealing with a deadly second surge of the flu this season, measles outbreaks in parts of the country, and mounting worries about bird flu. “We’re going to see a couple things. One, it’s a chilling of the Public Health Service. So people will be afraid to do the work that they need to do in terms of informing the public, in terms of warning the public,” Gounder said. “We’ve also seen in some states like Louisiana pulling back on mass vaccinations. I think we’ll continue to see moves like that, and that policy may not be guided by science, but rather by politics and ideology.” Already, vaccine skepticism in the country is threatening public health. Health experts have seen these views on vaccines, which have become increasingly politicized, contributing to lower vaccination rates across the country, leading to outbreaks of otherwise preventable diseases Kennedy has a long history of raising doubts about vaccines — despite decades of evidence showing they’ve saved millions of people from debilitating illness or death. What does RFK Jr. actually control? With his confirmation, Kennedy sits at the helm of the sprawling HHS department, which includes the CDC, the National Institutes of Health, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services and the Food and Drug Administration — but, despite his passion for changing the way Americans eat, he doesn’t have much direct control over that. “HHS does not have a ton of levers in terms of improving and making the food supply more healthy,” Gounder said, since that’s largely the role of the United States Department of Agriculture and the Environmental Protection Agency. “In fact, during the Senate confirmation hearings, one of the senators kind of took him to task on this and essentially told him, you’re going to need to stay in your lane and acknowledge that this is not under your purview, that some of these issues are under the purview of USDA and EPA when it comes to tackling chemicals in the environment,” she added. “And so, whether he can deliver on his promises, I am very skeptical.” One concrete thing he could help move forward is preliminary guidance at the FDA on front-of-package food labeling, Gounder said. “(These labels) would make it very clear to consumers whether something’s healthy, but whether that rule will be finalized under this administration remains very unclear,” she said. Gounder pointed out the MAHA movement is also not focusing on a large chunk of what harms children in the U.S. “It’s great to say we want our children to be healthy. What are the number one and number two causes of death among kids in this country? It’s gun violence and it’s motor vehicle accidents,” she said. “There’s nothing about that in the MAHA executive order that was signed by President Trump.” Sara Moniuszko Sara Moniuszko is a health and lifestyle reporter at CBSNews.com. Man cons Leeds City Council out of £710,000 in ‘Greggs’ swindle Man cons Leeds City Council out of £710,000 in ‘Greggs’ swindle Victoria Scheer BBC News, Yorkshire Crown Prosecution Service Aftab Baig was found guilty of three counts of fraud at Leeds Crown Court A man pretending to be a property manager for bakery chain Greggs conned a city council out of £710,000, a court has heard. Aftab Baig, 47, made fraudulent small business grant claims from Leeds City Council against 32 properties which were branches of the firm during the Covid pandemic in May 2020. Baig, who had no links to Greggs and was not employed by the company, was eventually caught out and all but £90,000 was later returned to the council. At Leeds Crown Court on Wednesday, Baig, of Paisley Road West, Glasgow, was found guilty of three counts of fraud. Leeds City Council called his actions “brazen and calculated”. According to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), Baig contacted Leeds City Council pretending to be a group property manager at the bakery chain’s head office. He asked for business rates numbers for the firm’s Leeds branches, details of which he claimed he could not access himself due to the Covid lockdown. Baig then used the details to apply to the Small Business Grant Fund, money from which was paid into a bank account associated with his catering business. The grant was one of several government schemes aimed at helping small businesses stay afloat during the pandemic. That same month, when the council realised the claims were fraudulent, the account was frozen and Baig was arrested in Glasgow two months later by Police Scotland officers. A total of about £16,000 in cash was found at his house, as well as forged remittance slips which officers believed he was planning to use to try and persuade the bank to return the frozen money, the CPS said. ‘Stealing funds’ Following the guilty verdict, Kelly Ward, from the CPS, said: “Baig took advantage of the difficult circumstances of the pandemic in 2020 to defraud the council out of taxpayers’ money. “Those who cheat the public purse are stealing funds which should rightly go towards services and the community or, in this case, towards supporting small businesses through an extremely challenging time.” Ms Ward said proceedings would be started to recover any assets resulting from Baig’s criminality, with the defendant due to be sentenced on 31 March. A Leeds City Council spokesperson said: “This money was intended to support local businesses in Leeds at a time when they were facing unprecedented pressures and when the city and its communities were coming together to get through the pandemic. “For someone to take advantage of such challenging circumstances and defraud the public purse is shocking and we would like to thank all those involved in this investigation for helping to ensure justice has been served.” Listen to highlights from West Yorkshire on BBC Sounds, catch up with the latest episode of Look North or tell us a story you think we should be covering here. Corsair CEO Believes Grand Theft Auto 6 Will Hit PC In Early 2026 Corsair CEO Believes Grand Theft Auto 6 Will Hit PC In Early 2026 Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto 6 may not have a release date yet, but it’s almost certainly going to be one of the best-selling games of the year. However, Strauss Zelnick–the CEO of Rockstar’s parent company, Take-Two–recently confirmed that a PC port for GTA 6 won’t be released at launch. Regardless, Corsair CEO Andy Paul has shared his belief that Grand Theft Auto 6 will arrive on PC in early 2026, and he’s betting that it will help his business. Via Insider Gaming, Paul shared his thoughts during a Corsair earnings call. Corsair’s business is built around computer peripherals, storage, memory, and other parts and accessories. Because GTA 6 will probably be a very demanding game on PC, he thinks it will “spur purchases of either peripherals or components.” He also called GTA 6 “the most anticipated and hardware-demanding game” coming in the near future, and indicated that the company’s “gaming business has never looked so strong.” Potentially, Paul could be correct about GTA 6 arriving on PC in 2026, but it’s unclear how accurate his information is. Traditionally, Rockstar games have released on consoles long before coming to PC, so a port after just a few months would be unusual. As an example, it took 19 months for Grand Theft Auto 5 to hit PC after its debut in 2013. Rockstar hasn’t publicly disclosed how long GTA 6 will remain solely on consoles, while Zelnick previously seemed to suggest that there will be a PC port at some point. Zelnick recently hinted that the release of GTA 6 may not necessarily mean the end of Grand Theft Auto Online, but he stopped short of confirming the latter’s future. GTA Online support is continuing for now, including some free bonus rewards for Valentine’s Day. Since Take-Two has set Borderlands 4 for a late September release, the drop date for GTA 6 may be coming into focus. Seth Klarman’s Baupost builds a large stake in one industrial name Seth Klarman’s Baupost builds a large stake in one industrial name Baupost Group’s Seth Klarman found a handful of buying opportunities last quarter as the longtime value investor continued to seek cheap hidden gems in an expensive stock market. The widely-followed hedge fund manager took a new stake in industrial product distributor Ferguson Enterprises , worth nearly $200 million at the end of 2024, according to a regulatory filing. Ferguson was Baupost’s seventh-largest holding as of Dec. 31. Shares of Ferguson fell about 10% last year, and are up 6.5% so far in 2025. The investor also established new positions in health insurer Humana as well as auto parts provider Genuine Parts in the fourth quarter. Humana suffered a sell-off of nearly 45% last year amid significantly higher spending on its members’ care in Medicare and Medicaid. Genuine Parts also lagged the market with a 16% loss last year. Baupost’s Seth Klarman Klarman, a follower of Benjamin Graham’s investing style, has drawn comparisons to Warren Buffett for his patient, disciplined approach, leading some to dub him “The Oracle of Boston.” The Harvard and Cornell grad published his now out-of-print investment guide, “Margin of Safety,” in 1991. The book now sells for thousands of dollars online. However, as growth stocks and technology shares continue to lead the stock market even after a decade of outperformance, value investors like Klarman have struggled through years of underperformance. Baupost gained only about 4% a year since 2014, while investors have pulled roughly $7 billion from the hedge fund in the past three years, according to Bloomberg News. Baupost is said to be refocusing on strategies that had been most lucrative to the firm, including distressed debt and special situations, event-driven equities and private investments. The hedge fund acquired shares in Sunrise Communications in the fourth quarter, building a stake worth about $100 million at the end of December, the filing showed. In October, John Malone’s Liberty Global completed the spin-off of Sunrise, its Swiss business, into a separate publicly-traded company. Among Baupost’s top 10 holdings, the hedge fund increased its positions in electrical distribution and services company Wesco International , building materials producer Eagle Materials as well as Restaurant Brands. What to Watch: The White Lotus, American *******: Gabby Petito, *********** Survivor and Gogglebox What to Watch: The White Lotus, American *******: Gabby Petito, *********** Survivor and Gogglebox The White LotusMonday, streaming on Binge Can Mike White pull off a hat trick? That’s what everyone is wondering ahead of the release of the third season of his award-winning series, The White Lotus. Both previous seasons were breakaway hits — can he do it again with his latest offering? If the first two episodes are anything to go by, then that’s a resounding yes. This time around we’re off to The White Lotus resort in Thailand. Like previous seasons, there’s a new cast of characters, including the hotel’s staff and its pampered VIP guests. Like previous years, they arrive by boat, and aboard are a rich family from the American Midwest (a couple and their three adult children — Parker Posey stars as their eccentric matriarch, giving Jennifer Coolidge a run for her money in the instantly iconic character stakes). There’s a cranky American man (Walton Goggins) and his up-for-anything, much younger girlfriend (played by Aimee Lou Wood, who is incredible in everything), and three middle-aged blonde women on a girls trip. All these characters are immediately memorable, and though it’s early days, I can already tell I’m going to be fully invested in what happens to them over this season. True to form, the first episode kicks off with the discovery of a body, then we’re flashing back a week. How we get to that end point is anyone’s guess, but I am DYING to find out. This season looks and feels very different — for a start, they’ve “Thai-ified” the opening sequence music — but at its heart, White’s show remains every bit as keenly observed, beautifully written and pitch-perfectly performed as previous incarnations. While it won’t be as highly rated as the top-tier Maradona item that’s being added to packs, this card will be one of the highest-rated cards ever given away by EA in this manner. “Inspired by Maradona’s rise from Argentinos Juniors at the age of 14 to a global superstar and serial winner with Napoli, Diego’s Dream Evolution allows players to upgrade Maradona through three separate Evolution paths,” reads a description for the in-game event. “Beginning at a humble 77 OVR, marking 16-year-old Diego’s groundbreaking international debut against Hungary in 1977, upgrade Maradona to a mighty 89 OVR as you follow his career all the way to the 1989 UEFA Cup final when the Argentinian captained Napoli to glory over two tough legs against Stuttgart.” A further evolution will also be made available, however, this evolution won’t be free and will require either FC Points, or in-game coins. You only need to see this screenshot once to realize why Gemini needs to follow ChatGPT in making its AI products less confusing You only need to see this screenshot once to realize why Gemini needs to follow ChatGPT in making its AI products less confusing OpenAI has already announced that it will simplify its ChatGPT product roadmap, which has become horribly splintered lately by too many obscure product names for the average consumer to care about. It’s ditching all its latest model names, such as o1 and o3, not to mention o3-high, to get behind a simple ChatGPT-followed-by-version-number branding style. I think it’s time Google followed suit with Gemini, and if you want to know why, just look at this screenshot I took from the Gemini app on my phone today: Talk about too many options… (Image credit: Apple/Google) It’s hard to look at that screenshot and think that anybody at Google planned it to look that way; it’s just how it’s evolved, with little thought given to the person who has to use it. As part of the Gemini Advanced subscription you get access to all of Google’s different language models, however having to choose between seven different models with very similar names is verging on the ridiculous. Not to mention that I think ‘Google Gemini 2.0 Flash Thinking Experimental with apps’ could well win an award for the longest product name in history. What does that mean, anyway? As a ChatGPT Plus subscriber, you also currently get access to an equally baffling number of different LLMs. Some, named things like o1, are deep reasoning models that take a while to really mull over the questions you ask them, while others are smaller and more lightweight, so you get quicker answers but less depth. It’s almost like Google and OpenAI are competing with each other in how confusing they can make their AI tools. Too much choice I get it; if you are involved in academic research or need AI to help you write code, you probably need access to a variety of different LLMs for different tasks. But if all you want to do is get AI to help you with your kid’s math homework or plan your next road trip, having access to such a diverse selection of LLMs is overkill. OpenAI’s proposed solution is to settle down behind the ChatGPT name followed by a version number, so ChatGPT-4, then ChatGPT-5, and so on. The AI will then look at the complexity of what you’re asking and decide if it needs to use a deep reasoning model or a simpler LLM. To torture an analogy, most people don’t care how the sausage is made; they simply want a delicious-tasting hotdog. Google should do the same with its different versions of Gemini. For example, the ‘2.0 Flash Thinking Experimental with apps’ model has the power to access things like YouTube videos, so it can answer questions about them or extract the key points from them. Why not just call it Gemini 2.0, and then, if you ask a question about a YouTube video, switch to the relevant LLM without having to get the user to choose it first? Look at Apple What we want is AI that just works, with simple naming conventions. If you look at the way Apple brands its products, it normally has up to three versions of a product with a simple name indicating the differences. It has two versions of its MacBook – the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro – and its latest iPhone – iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro – that’s nice and simple. We’re still right at the start of the AI revolution, and things are changing rapidly, and the consumer experience is often left as an afterthought. As OpenAI’s decision to simplify its branding shows, that situation is starting to change. I think we can expect the experience of using AI to get a lot slicker this year, let’s just hope that Google get the memo, too. An Ancient Burial Ground Has Been Preserved Under an Alpine City for More than 2,000 Years An Ancient Burial Ground Has Been Preserved Under an Alpine City for More than 2,000 Years Archaeologists discovered a pre-Roman necropolis under the Italian Alpine city of Trento. The discovery of 200 tombs dated to between 900 and 700 B.C. may just be the tip of the iceberg. Experts believe flooding in the area fully preserved the site and the bevy of grave goods that were inside the tombs. A fully preserved burial ground—complete with 7.8-foot-tall stelae used as grave markers—has long sat in secret underneath the historic Alpine town of Trento, Italy. If not for some restoration work on one of the city’s many historic buildings, it may have never been found. But after a crew of workers made the initial discovery, archaeologists came in to further excavate the ancient necropolis, which was dated to between 900 and 700 B.C. Since the discovery, the team has uncovered more than 200 tombs (some of which are still filled with grave goods), and they believe that this may be just the start of what will eventually be the full extent of the discoveries at the necropolis. The Iron Age find pre-dates Roman presence in the Alps, and provides new insight on both the funerary practices of the time and the commercial interactions between the inhabitants of ancient Trento and those around them. “The Alpine peoples were not isolated,” Franco Marzatico, archaeological superintendent, said in a translated statement from the Archaeological Heritage Office of the Superintendent for Cultural Heritage and Activities of the Autonomous Province of Trento. “They maintained relationships and exchanges with the people of the Po Valley, in particular between 900 and 700 B.C., with the Emilian area, with the flourishing civilization of the Etruscans, and subsequently with the Venetians and other people of the Alps.” Experts believe the area around present-day Trento once featured a wide riverbed and a smaller network of streams intertwining with each other and separated by temporary sand and gravel bars. The archaeologists now think that the necropolis arose somewhere within a drier portion of the ancient city, and was constructed over the course of several burial phases during the Iron Age. At some point, flooding from nearby river channels sealed the site and conserved the funerary context, which now sits about 26 feet below the current level of the city. “An incredible discovery, which shows us a new history of the city of Trento, no longer just as a Roman city,” Francesca Gerosa, vice president and provincial councilor for culture, said a translated statement. “The work is progressing, but there is still an entire area to be monitored in order to then evaluate it.” The raw limestone used in the vertical stelae likely came from the eastern hills of Trento. The grave markers delineate main tombs with stone chambers, while the coffins are covered by mounds. The layout of the burial ground indicates that, over time, satellite tombs developed around the main tombs. Inside the coffins, archaeologists discovered ashes and calcined bone fragments that were once housed in perishable containers placed over funerary objects wrapped in fabric. The discovery of metal weapons and elaborate ornamental pieces—sometimes featuring amber and glass paste—show the connection to the Italic culture around them, and the commercial and cultural contact that would have taken place during that time. “The Iron Age is a ******* of profound transformations from a historical cultural point of view throughout the Mediterranean, in the Alps, and beyond the Alps,” Marzatico said. “The great civilizations of the Etruscans, Phoenicians, Greeks, and Celts flourished. These were also the times of the first Olympics which traditionally date back to 776 B.C. and the foundation of Rome in 753 B.C. In the archaeological excavation in progress, we have the possibility of recognizing the elite of a society that was evidently settled in the Trento basin, and which presented its power and prestige through the deposition of objects emblematic of its privileged status.” You Might Also Like Source link #Ancient #Burial #Ground #Preserved #Alpine #City #Years Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

Crysis 3 Boss Confirmed an Iconic In-Game Weapon Symbolized Native Americans Fighting Against Invaders Crysis 3 Boss Confirmed an Iconic In-Game Weapon Symbolized Native Americans Fighting Against Invaders Crysis 3 is a memorable game for several reasons, from its demanding hardware requirements to breathtaking visuals and immersive gameplay. The game truly pushed the boundaries of what was possible in gaming at the time. Even today, it remains a visual spectacle. The game still holds up to this day. | Image Credit: Crytek While some critics argued that it didn’t improve much over its predecessor, it was a great game, nonetheless. What truly set it apart was its gameplay innovations, setting, and the addition of an iconic weapon: the Predator Bow. Not only did this weapon introduce new layers of gameplay and strategy, but it also carried a deep symbolism, one that was confirmed by the game’s Senior Creative Director, Rasmus Højengaard, in an interview. Crysis 3‘s Predator Bow: A weapon with deeper meaning Crysis 3 was a game that didn’t shy away from anything. It pushed the limits of both gameplay and visuals, bringing players into a beautifully realized world that blends nature with urban landscapes. The game’s setting: New York City transformed into an overgrown “urban rainforest” was a stark contrast to the typical post-apocalyptic settings in many games at the time (such as Fallout). This fresh, modernized world brought new gameplay mechanics and offered more freedom and variety than Crysis 2. However, the game’s technical demands were one of the most talked-about aspects, even sparking the now-iconic question: “Can it run Crysis?” The only thing that trumped that was the new and unexpected weapon: Predator Bow, the game’s signature weapon. At first, players were shocked to see a bow in a modernized world, but as time passed, it added a strategic element to the game, allowing players to approach combat stealthily and with precision. Additionally, the weapon symbolized something better. In an interview with PCGamer, Rasmus Højengaard explained that the Predator Bow’s symbolism could be seen as a subtle nod to Native American culture. When asked about the parallel between the protagonist and his own Native American background, he chuckled, acknowledging the connection Yeah, you could draw that parallel if you want to. He emphasized that the Prophet’s use of the bow, despite having access to various cutting-edge weapons, highlighted his resilience and strength in the face of overwhelming odds (the fight against the invading aliens). The future of Crysis seems uncertain Fans are hoping to see the new title get back into development. | Image Credit: Crytek Crysis 3 marked the end of the beloved trilogy, wrapping up Prophet’s journey in a visually stunning and action-packed finale. It was a game that many players still hold dear. However, when the trilogy concluded, it seemed that the Crysis series had run its course, and players were unsure if they’d ever see another entry. That was until January 2022, when Crysis 4 was officially announced by Crytek. It was a glimmer of hope that fans had been waiting nearly a decade for. Unfortunately, that hope was short-lived. In the third quarter of 2024, Crytek announced that development on Crysis 4 had been put on hold. Despite the anticipation, it seems that players will have to wait even longer for the next chapter in the epic saga if it ever comes to fruition. In the end, with Crysis 4 now on hold, it’s uncertain when or if the next installment will arrive, but one thing is for sure: Crysis 3 will always be remembered as a unique and memorable experience in gaming history. Farmers used trash to grow crops in barren sand 1000 years ago Farmers used trash to grow crops in barren sand 1000 years ago One thousand years ago, people along Israel’s Mediterranean coast dug deeply enclosed plots in the sand, filled them with 80,000 tonnes of trash and used the fertile soil that formed for farming, allowing them to produce crops that would otherwise fail on such harsh ground. This represents the oldest-known, large-scale plot-and-berm system that allows crop-growing in sand, putting it among multiple, less clearly dated sites across the globe. It might even be the origin of such oasis-like agricultural sites in deserts, some of which still exist today, says Joel Roskin at Bar-Ilan University in Israel. Is Trump right when he says the US faces unfair trade? Is Trump right when he says the US faces unfair trade? EPA-EFE/REX/Shutterstock Donald Trump has ordered his team to come up with plans to impose a new set of taxes – known as tariffs – on goods coming into the United States. Trump wants to introduce “reciprocal tariffs” – taxes on imports to the US which are set at a similar rate to taxes other countries put on goods they import from the US. The president says other countries often have higher tariffs on imports from the US than the other way round and believes America “has been treated unfairly by trading partners, both friend and foe”. BBC Verify has explored whether he has a valid case. How do countries set tariffs on imports? First, it is important to understand the rules of global trade. Under the terms of membership of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), countries are permitted to impose tariffs on imports. Those tariffs can differ depending on the item being imported. So, for instance, a nation can impose a 10% levy on rice imports and a 25% tariff on car imports. But under WTO rules, they are not supposed to discriminate between nations when setting the tariff they charge on a particular imported good. So Egypt, for example, would not be allowed to impose a 2% tariff on wheat coming from Russia, but a 50% tariff on wheat coming from Ukraine. This is known as the “Most Favoured Nation” (MFN) principle in international trade: everyone has to be subject to the same tariff by the country imposing the tariff. There is an exception when two nations sign a free trade agreement between themselves that covers most of their trade. Under these circumstances they can charge no tariffs on goods passing between them but maintain tariffs on goods coming from everywhere else in the world. What tariffs do countries currently have? While most countries have a range of tariff rates covering different goods imports, they also report an average external tariff to the WTO, which reflects the overall average tariff rate applied to all imports. The US had an average external tariff of 3.3% in 2023. That was slightly lower than the ***’s average tariff of 3.8%. It was also below the European Union’s average tariff of 5% and China’s average tariff of 7.5%. America’s average tariff was considerably lower than the average tariff of some of its other trading partners. For instance, India’s average tariff was 17%, while South Korea’s was 13.4%. America’s average tariff was lower than Mexico’s (6.8%) and Canada’s (3.8%), though trade agreements between the US and these countries mean that American exports to them are not subject to tariffs. The same is true for South Korea, with which the US has a free trade agreement But, broadly speaking, it is legitimate for Trump to point out that some countries have a higher average tariff on imports than America’s. And those tariffs push up the cost of many American exports to those countries, which might be said to disadvantage US exporters relative to exporters in those countries selling into the US. However, whether this amounts to unfair trade that serves to harm the US is not clear cut. Most economists judge that the costs of import tariffs are, ultimately, borne by households in the country that imposes them because they can mean that imported goods become more expensive. This could mean nations with higher average external tariffs than the US would be penalising their own consumers rather than Americans. How might a reciprocal tariff work? On 10 February, Trump suggested it could mean the US imposing the same average external tariff on imports from each individual nation as those countries impose. He told reporters: “If they charge us, we charge them. If they’re at 25, we’re at 25. If they’re at 10, we’re at 10.” This would likely break the MFN rules of the WTO, which require a nation to impose the same tariff on particular goods, regardless of where they came from. If the US imposed, say, a tariff of 9.4% on all goods coming from Vietnam but 3.8% on all goods coming from the *** (the same as their own average external tariffs) that would be a breach of the rules. If the US could show the targeted country was already itself breaching the organisation’s rules in some way it might be able to claim that specific retaliatory tariffs against that country are justified under WTO rules. But simply imposing reciprocal tariffs as a general principle would likely constitute a breach. What about reciprocal tariffs on individual goods? Another possibility is that Trump could attempt to match not average national tariff rates, but tariff rates on individual items imposed by different countries. For example, the EU imposes a 10% tariff on all imported cars from outside the bloc, including from America. But the US imposes only a 2.5% tariff on imported cars, including those from the EU. The US might decide to impose a 10% tariff on cars from the EU in order to level the playing field. However, if it tried to match tariffs on every type of import with every different country this would be an extremely lengthy and complex exercise, given the vast range of goods involved in global trade and the distinct tariff regimes operated by the 166 members of the WTO. Trump’s official memorandum outlining the policy said the administration’s reciprocal tariffs might also be designed to offset so called “non-tariff barriers” to trade such as other countries’ regulations, domestic subsidies, currency values and Value Added Taxes (VAT). America does not charge VAT on goods, but most other nations do, including the ***. This could make the exercise of designing the tariffs even more complex. While economists agree that domestic regulations and subsidies can constitute important non-tariff barriers to trade, they insist that VAT does not fall into this category because it is levied on all goods sold domestically, and therefore does not lead to any relative cost disadvantage for imports from the US. The WTO does not list VAT as a trade barrier. Could US tariffs actually come down? If Trump were serious about exactly matching individual tariffs from other nations it could also, in theory, require the US to lower some tariffs, not to raise them. The US has higher tariffs on certain agricultural products than some of its trading partners. For instance, the US currently imposes effective tariffs on many milk imports of more than 10%. But New Zealand, a major global milk producer, has 0% tariffs on its dairy imports. The US milk tariffs are designed to protect US dairy farmers, including many in the swing state of Wisconsin, and lowering the tariff for milk exporters from New Zealand would likely face political resistance from politicians from that state. Similarly, a genuinely reciprocal US tariff regime based on individual goods would pose challenges for the US automotive industry. The US imposes a 25% tariff on imported trucks, including from the EU. But the EU’s own tariff on imported trucks, including from the US, is only 10%. So a US reciprocal tariff with the EU on imported trucks would, in theory, mean the US lowering its tariff here. While a reciprocal tariff on EU cars might be welcomed by American automakers, a reciprocal tariff on EU trucks might not be. However, Trump on Thursday made clear that some of his planned tariffs such as on steel and aluminium would be “over and above” his reciprocal tariffs, suggesting that true reciprocity on trade is not, in fact, his principal objective. Arm’s to launch first self-made processors, poaching employees from clients: Reports Arm’s to launch first self-made processors, poaching employees from clients: Reports Arm Holdings is set to launch its first in-house designed processor later this year and has already landed orders from several customers, including Meta, according to the Financial Times. This decision places Arm in direct competition with some of its customers that develop Arm-based processors for data centers, including Ampere and, to some degree, Nvidia, marking a major shift in the company’s strategy. In addition, Arm is actively poaching talent from its rivals, according to Reuters. Arm goes hardware According to the Financial Times, the CPU will be a general design aimed at data centers. It will be built ‘on a base’ that allows for some customizations for the end user, such as Meta. FT didn’t reveal the actual CPU specs or elaborate on the customizations, so we can only wonder how many cores, memory channels, PCIe lanes, and other I/O the processor will support. Nonetheless, we can speculate that Arm’s in-house processor will be based on the company’s Neoverse V3 (high-performance) or Neoverse N3 (energy-efficient) general-purpose cores based on the Armv9.2 microarchitecture. It is also likely that the CPU design will leverage Arm’s Neoverse compute sub-system (CSS) IP for data center processors. Arm’s Neoverse V3 CSS enables building processors with up to 64 V3 cores per die, while the Neoverse N3 CSS allows the building of CPUs with up to 8 N3 cores per die. Of course, multiple CPU chiplets can be used within a processor, so the final core count of Arm’s offering remains to be seen. It remains unclear what level of customizability Arm will offer its clients. However, assuming it is substantial enough, Arm’s in-house CPUs will differ from typical off-the-shelf offerings from AMD or Intel. Arm’s own data center-grade CPU will, without any doubt, compete against processors designed by its customers. However, that competition may not be dramatic as most of Arm’s data center licensees use their custom-designed processors exclusively in their own data centers (AWS, Google, Microsoft) or target them at very specific workloads or platforms (Nvidia). While this shift will undoubtedly upset companies like Ampere or Huawei, it is unlikely that this will cause many difficulties as Ampere appears to be in the process of being taken over by Softbank, whereas Huawei is mostly concentrated on making chips for itself and close partners. Nonetheless, it will be interesting to see whether there will be many companies willing to license Arm’s core designs or CSS designs for data center-grade processors going forward now that Arm offers its own CPUs. Get Tom’s Hardware’s best news and in-depth reviews, straight to your inbox. Keep in mind that Arm or Meta did not comment to FT on the matter. And poaches talent from its customers In addition to making its own hardware, Arm is also actively recruiting talent from its own customers, which will further irritate its clients. Reuters reports that Arm has been hiring executives from its licensees since November 2023 to support its transition into chip sales. Recruiters working for Arm have contacted Silicon Valley chip designers, seeking expertise to strengthen its chip division. This hiring activity contradicts CEO Rene Haas’s testimony in December in the company’s trial against Qualcomm, where he denied that Arm was building its own CPUs, despite internal recruitment efforts already being underway. Given the fact that Arm has been actively hiring experienced chip developers and chip sales personnel for well over a year, this suggests that its own hardware is expected to become a major source of revenue, and the company hopes to compete with giants like AMD and Intel. ****** Caps beat Pakistan for tri-nation series triumph ****** Caps beat Pakistan for tri-nation series triumph New Zealand have enjoyed the perfect dress rehearsal before their Champions Trophy date with Pakistan, beating the tournament hosts by five wickets in the tri-nation series final. Five days before the teams meet again in the Trophy opener, Pakistan were dismissed for 242 before New Zealand cruised to 5-243 in the 46th over on Friday. Fast bowler Will O’Rourke staked his claim to be in next Wednesday’s match with his 4-43 while captain Mitchell Santner returned his most economical one-day international figures of 2-20. None of the Pakistan batters got a half-century while Daryl Mitchell (57) and Tom Latham (56) led New Zealand to a third successive win in the tournament, clinched by Pakistan’s 16th wide. Left-hander Latham, who came into the final without a run in both games at Lahore, could have been dismissed for a third straight duck. But he was twice dropped and Pakistan didn’t go for an lbw video referral when replays suggested leg-spinner Abrar Ahmed could have overturned the on-field umpire’s decision. Latham stretched his luck when he successfully reviewed an on-field ‘out’ ruling for caught behind off Shaheen Shah Afridi. Latham and Mitchell put on 87 off 88 ****** before both fell late in the run chase. Devon Conway (48) had earlier played another meaningful knock after being inserted as an opener while Rachin Ravindra was rested after a head knock in the field during the first game against Pakistan. Conway laid the foundation in a 71-run partnership with Kane Williamson (34), who missed out on his third successive half-century. Conway top-edged Naseem Shah (2-43), which brought Latham to the crease to join Mitchell. New Zealand perfectly read the tacky pitch after losing the coin toss, and pinned down Pakistan with pacers hitting tight lengths early and Santner drying out the runs in the middle overs. Babar Azam became the joint-fastest batter to reach 6000 ODI runs with Hashim Amla of South Africa, but perished soon after the achievement in his 123rd innings. O’Rourke struck in his second over when Fakhar Zaman (10) struggled to gauge the two-paced pitch and chipped an easy catch to square leg, and Saud Shakeel (8) was clean bowled by off-spinner Michael Bracewell in his first over inside the batting power play. Babar looked to shape up well for a big innings and struck cover-driven boundaries until he offered a tame return catch to Nathan Smith on 29. Babar threw down his bat in dismay. Captain Mohammad Rizwan (46) and Salman Ali Agha (45) tried to revive the innings with an 88-run stand but couldn’t score at the pace they managed in the epic run chase against South Africa on Monday. O’Rourke clean bowled Rizwan with a scrambled seam in his return spell, and Salman reverse swept Bracewell to short third man where Jacob Duffy caught the ball over his shoulders. Tayyab Tahir (38 off 33 ******) tried to up the scoring rate before getting caught at mid-wicket, and Santner chipped in with two wickets in one over to finish with impressive figures. Allrounder Faheem Ashraf, playing his first ODI since 2023, was dropped twice before O’Rourke bagged him and finished Pakistan’s below-par effort with the bat by claiming the last two wickets. Wells Fargo sees six key opportunities for fixed-income investors Wells Fargo sees six key opportunities for fixed-income investors There is a lot of uncertainty in the markets these days, but for fixed-income investors who remain agile, there could also be several opportunities, according to Wells Fargo. Bond yields remain elevated as investors grapple with uncertainty around the direction of interest rates and inflation . The yield on the 10-year Treasury is currently around 4.47%. Yields move inversely to prices. After cutting last year, the Federal Reserve opted to leave rates unchanged in January. The majority of market participants don’t think the central bank will lower again for several months, according to the CME FedWatch Tool . On Wednesday, Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell testified before Congress that ” we’re not quite there yet ” in reducing inflation to its 2% target. To take advantage of the opportunities arising amid the uncertainty, Wells Fargo suggests remaining active and implementing defensive and growth-oriented fixed-income strategies concurrently. “Ultra-short-term securities may appear attractive, but those opportunities diminish if the Fed eventually cuts policy rates further, while longer-term securities can be exposed to interest-rate risk if inflation and hotter economic growth force the Fed to raise rates further,” global fixed income specialist Luis Alvarado wrote in a note Monday. Here are six key opportunities, according to Alvarado. U.S. intermediate-term taxable bonds These bonds, which have maturities of three to seven years, strike a balance between yield and price volatility, Alvarado said. They currently have attractive yields and, historically, tend to be less rate sensitive, which is important if rates increase, he noted. “This asset class may provide investors with opportunities to outperform cash, cash alternatives, and U.S. Short Term Taxable Fixed Income in the near term,” he wrote. U.S. long-term taxable bonds Alvarado favors bonds that have a 10-year or more time horizon over short-term bonds, although he has a neutral rating on them. “Consider targeting long-term bonds and being favorable duration (a measure of interest rate sensitivity) in an effort to take advantage of yield steepness on the long end of the curve now that the Fed appears to be on pause in its interest rate-cutting cycle,” he said. Investment-grade corporate bonds Credit spreads are tight, meaning they are expensive, but the higher yields relative to other investment-grade fixed-income sectors make them a favorable investment, Alvarado said. He advises investors to do a sound credit analysis before buying the assets. The focus should be on selectivity among issuers and sectors and pay close attention to liquidity and high quality, he added. Select securitized products Residential mortgage-backed securities and asset-backed securities both offer value relative to other fixed-income investments, while providing favorable credit quality and liquidity, Alvarado said. “Furthermore, we believe an advantage of RMBS over IG [investment-grade] corporates remains visible in credit-spread differential,” he said. “Demand for ABS remains particularly strong, and although credit spreads have compressed in the past few months, we believe they have room to tighten further.” Emerging market fixed income Both U.S.-dollar and local currency emerging-market sovereign bonds should continue to have positive performance in the near term, but most of that support should come on the back of additional Fed rate cuts, Alvarado said. “Still, the attractive yield differential of EM bonds may provide greater currency resilience and a cushion against capital losses if interest rates climb once again, or if credit spreads widen,” he said.
