‘Yellowjackets’ Season 3, Episode 2 Recap: New Friends
‘Yellowjackets’ Season 3, Episode 2 Recap: New Friends
Meanwhile, I’m still waiting for Ambrose and Kessell to have their breakout moments. Episode 2 doesn’t really offer that up for Ambrose, though she does have the chance to sing Jamiroquai karaoke. The episode does allow Kessell the opportunity to show new sides of Lottie, though, who is still a bit cuckoo but also serene in her way.
Lottie emerges, having left the temporary psychiatric hold she was put under after she tried to kill Shauna at her wellness retreat. Her arrival is a little cartoonish. She simply arrives with a suitcase at Shauna’s door, asking for a place to stay. But for as easy a solution as that is to getting everyone in the same place again, it yields some very fun material.
Callie, it turns out, wants Lottie to stay, figuring she can use her to get information about just what is going on with her parents. Shauna, foreseeing disaster but not making good decisions, decides to invite Misty to make sure Lottie and Callie don’t get too close. (Poor Misty thinks she is finally getting an invitation from one of her old pals just to hang. Walter is correct: They never just want to chill with her.)
Callie has other plans, however, initiating a sleepover where she pours cocktails and starts a game of truth or dare. She drugs Misty and bonds with Lottie, who remains committed to her belief that the “wilderness” is asking for sacrifices. But she is also a nice hang who is down to watch reality TV and braid hair.
This fun side of Lottie has seemingly disappeared in the 1990s story. Younger Lottie (Courtney Eaton) is now entirely focused on her goal of getting Travis to communicate with the wilderness, pushing hallucinogens on him despite his trauma. (Can a guy who had to take a raw bite of his little brother’s heart last season maybe get some breathing room?) She convinces him to stay behind and do drugs while the rest of the group is out looking for Mari. Even though he loses his mind for a while and strangles her, she remains entirely focused on her goal.
On the subject of Mari: Mari, like Melissa, has transformed from a side character to a major player this season. Coach Ben hasn’t turned into a full monster — well, not exactly. After she falls into his pit, he instructs her on how to reset her broken leg and helps her climb out, But then he ties her up and brings her to his hiding spot, fearful that she’ll expose him. There, he hands her a steaming mug of hot chocolate from the stash he found.

U.S. Army bars transgender people from enlisting, ends gender-affirming care services
U.S. Army bars transgender people from enlisting, ends gender-affirming care services
The U.S. Army will no longer allow transgender people to enlist and will stop providing gender-affirming care for service members, it announced on social media Friday.
“The #USArmy will no longer allow transgender individuals to join the military and will stop performing or facilitating procedures associated with gender transition for service members. Stay tuned for more details,” the post said.
The announcement follows an executive order signed by President Trump on Jan. 27 that directed the Pentagon to determine a policy for transgender service members within 30 days.
The president’s order stated that expressing “a gender identity inconsistent with an individual’s sex conflicts with a soldier’s commitment to an honorable, truthful, and disciplined lifestyle, even in one’s personal life” and that those doing so “cannot satisfy the rigorous standards necessary for military service.”
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth had paused bringing in recruits who have a diagnosis of gender dysphoria and paused all gender-affirming care, according to a memo issued Feb. 7.
The memo appears in the docket for the case in the D.C. District Court challenging the president’s executive order, which could lead to a renewed ban on transgender troops.
“Transgender service members have been serving openly for almost ten years, and currently fill critical roles in every branch and specialty, including infantry, aviation, nuclear engineering, law enforcement, and military intelligence, many requiring years of specialized training and expertise,” SPARTA Pride, a nonprofit organization for trans service members and veterans, said in a statement when the executive order came out. “…The readiness and physical capabilities of transgender service members is not different from that of other service members.”
The Army’s announcement also comes in the wake of another executive order from the president proclaiming the federal government only recognizes “two sexes, male and female.”

Trump administration eyes canceling leases for space used by US judiciary
Trump administration eyes canceling leases for space used by US judiciary
By Nate Raymond
(Reuters) – U.S. President Donald Trump and billionaire ally Elon Musk’s push to radically overhaul the federal government is now reaching the U.S. court system with a demand that the judiciary justify why the administration should not cancel leases for space it utilizes at 160 locations nationally.
The Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts, the federal judiciary’s administrative arm, in an internal memo issued on Thursday said it received the lease inquiry from the U.S. General Services Administration, which manages federal property for various parts of the government including the courts.
Trusted news and daily delights, right in your inbox
See for yourself — The Yodel is the go-to source for daily news, entertainment and feel-good stories.
Those potential lease cancellations were one of a number of issues the memo sought to address arising from what it described as the “fast pace” and “highly dynamic situation” presented by executive branch agencies seeking to carry out Trump’s agenda.
The leases are for spaces at about 160 locations that are utilized by courts and federal public defender offices, which are part of the judiciary and provide lawyers for indigent criminal defendants, according to the memo.
Paul Gamble, the Administrative Office’s chief of the facilities and security office, in the memo said the judiciary “intends to work with GSA to ensure that judiciary operations in each of these locations can continue undisturbed.”
The Administrative Office declined to comment. The GSA had no immediate comment. The White House did not respond to a request for comment.
The possibility of lease cancellations emerged as Trump and his allies have sharply attacked judges who they say have stymied the Republican president’s immigration and cost-cutting agenda, with Musk calling for impeachments and Vice President J.D. Vance saying judges “aren’t allowed to control the executive’s legitimate power.”
Such comments have fueled concerns about whether the Trump administration would abide by court rulings and whether the country is headed to a constitutional crisis.
‘UNNECESSARY CHAOS’
The judiciary is one of three branches of the federal government and operates independently of the executive branch Trump leads. But it relies on some services and functions that are maintained by arms of executive branch, including GSA.
GSA’s acting director is tech entrepreneur Stephen Ehikian, who in a notice to agencies last week said the agency was seeking to accelerate disposing of unused and under-utilized space to “save taxpayers billions and improve operational efficiency.”
But Marin Levy, a professor at Duke University School of Law who studies the federal courts, called it “shocking” that the administration sought to cancel leases used by the judiciary too, saying the move created “unnecessary chaos.”
“The judiciary is an independent branch of government,” she said in an email. “And Congress, not the executive, provides funding for the judiciary’s facilities.”
In Thursday’s memo, Gamble said the new administration’s efforts to cut spending had impacted other aspects of the judiciary such as contracts for court projects that were impacted by a GSA-imposed freeze on contracting. The memo did not provide further details on which specific contracts were affected.
Gamble advised courts to also turn away government agencies or individual executive branch employees who might have contacted them looking for space to work in after Trump curtailed remote work arrangements and required federal workers to return to the office five days a week.
“Courthouses and other judiciary facilities are for judiciary operations,” Gamble wrote.
The U.S. Marshals Service, which provides security for courthouses and judges, has been directed by Trump’s Justice Department to support Trump’s immigration crackdown.
But Gamble said the agency has assured the Administrative Office that the security of the judiciary remains its “top priority and will be staffed accordingly.”

Blow for Champions League-chasing Leipzig in Bundesliga
Blow for Champions League-chasing Leipzig in Bundesliga
RB Leipzig have been held to a goalless draw at Augsburg in the Bundesliga, putting at risk their top-four spot.
Substitute Kosta Nedeljkovic headed against the crossbar for Leipzig in stoppage time after earlier chances from Lukas Klostermann in the 47th and Lutsharel Geertruida early on.
Frank Onyeka came closest for the hosts in the 81st minute in a match of few chances.
Leipzig are fourth with just one win from their last six league matches, putting pressure on coach Marco Rose.
They can be overtaken by VfB Stuttgart if they beat Wolfsburg on Saturday. Augsburg are unbeaten in six matches and 12th.
“It was difficult. We weren’t dangerous enough and it is a deserved draw in the end,” Leipzig goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi told streaming portal DAZN.
“We did well at the back, but we must find this lightness up front and then we will score goals again.”
Matchday 22 continues on the weekend and is highlighted by a table topper on Saturday between champions Bayer Leverkusen and Bayern Munich, who are eight points ahead of them at the top.

New York’s last mayor, Bill de Blasio, defends successor Eric Adams amid scandal
New York’s last mayor, Bill de Blasio, defends successor Eric Adams amid scandal
Amid a swirl of resignations, charges and calls for New York City Mayor Eric Adams to step down, one person who remains in the mayor’s corner is his predecessor.
Bill de Blasio, the former New York City mayor and a fellow Democrat, believes the case against Adams should never have been brought. The charges, which include bribery and campaign finance allegations, “were flimsy,” de Blasio said in an interview Friday with CBS News.
“From Day One, I thought the charges against him were very weak,” de Blasio said. “I believe in my heart, and this is from personal experience, that we’ve got to have maturity to know that just because some prosecutor brings a charge doesn’t mean it’s true.”
On Monday, Acting Deputy Attorney General Emil Bove sent a memo instructing former New York U.S. Attorney Danielle Sassoon’s office to abandon the five-count indictment against Adams. Bove wrote that the case “restricted” Adams’ ability to help the Trump administration enforce its immigration policies.
Sassoon, who was Manhattan’s top career federal prosecutor until Thursday, was among at least half a dozen Justice Department officials to resign after her office was directed to drop its criminal case against Adams.
Adams, who pleaded not guilty and denied wrongdoing, was set to go to trial in April. Prosecutors said in a sprawling September indictment that Adams abused his power for years, using his influence to obtain ******** campaign contributions and free or discounted travel.
Sassoon wrote in a letter to the attorney general Thursday that Adams’ attorneys had “urged what amounted to a quid pro quo,” allegedly offering the mayor’s cooperation with Trump administration priorities in immigration enforcement in exchange for dismissal of the charges.
An attorney for Adams called that “a total lie,” and in a statement Friday, Adams also denied the allegation.
“I want to be crystal clear with New Yorkers: I never offered — nor did anyone offer on my behalf — any trade of my authority as your mayor for an end to my case. Never,” Adams said.
Adams on Thursday announced an executive order allowing federal immigration agents to enter the city’s Rikers Island jail complex — a major reversal of city policy. But de Blasio said he is skeptical that decisions like that are evidence of a deal with the White House.
De Blasio said he didn’t believe that was indicative of a quid pro quo arrangement. He called the move “consistent with his previous positions that had nothing to do with his legal case.”
“I’ve had my differences with Eric Adams, but I’ve known him a long time. He was a police officer for 20 years. He understands the law,” de Blasio said. “I am not surprised that he takes a different position on immigration than the rest of us (New York Democrats).”
De Blasio was broadly critical of the case and the prosecutors who brought it, saying the plan to go to trial just two months before the city’s crucial Democratic primary was irresponsible.
However, Sassoon, in her resignation letter Thursday, noted that the Justice Department had indicted Adams earlier. “The Department of Justice correctly concluded that bringing charges nine months before a primary election was entirely appropriate,” Sassoon wrote.
De Blasio said he knows from experience the toll of being under investigation. He weathered his own federal probe related to campaign fundraising. It did not lead to charges. De Blasio said “the process of defending yourself from a potential charge is time consuming” and often means extra hours spent fundraising.
He said an upcoming election was the elephant in the room.
“They were explicit that there was a clock in mind. They either had to prove their case or pull it,” de Blasio said.

In March 2017, acting U.S. Attorney Joon Kim announced no charges would be brought against de Blasio. The announcement noted that Kim’s office wanted to avoid influencing that year’s race for City Hall.
“Although it is rare that we issue a public statement about the status of an investigation, we believe it appropriate in this case at this time, in order not to unduly influence the upcoming campaign and Mayoral election,” Kim said.
Adams and Bove called the case against him politically motivated, echoing complaints made about other cases by Bove’s former defense client, President Trump.
De Blasio thinks the parallel ends there.
“It’s apples to oranges. For all things related to Trump, there was massive evidence in public view. No one’s ever shown evidence of bribery (against Adams),” de Blasio said.
Mr. Trump was convicted in New York last year of 34 felony counts of falsifying business records. He is appealing that conviction. A criminal case in Georgia is on indefinite hold, and a federal case against Mr. Trump was dropped after he was elected in November, because pursuing it further would have violated Justice Department policy regarding sitting presidents. Another federal case was dismissed last summer.
Mr. Trump has denied all allegations and accused various prosecutors of charging him for political gain.
Adams’ critics have accused him of cozying up to Trump in order to make his case go away. De Blasio said Adams can show that’s untrue through open opposition to Trump policies.
“The mayor has an opportunity to prove that notion false. He can put this to rest with his actions,” de Blasio said.

Rudakubana, 18, is serving a minimum 52-year sentence for the ******* of Elsie Dot Stancombe, seven, Bebe King, six, and Alice da Silva Aguiar, nine, in Southport in July 2024.
In a statement issued on Friday evening, Lord Hermer KC said: “After careful consideration of independent legal advice and consultation with leading criminal barristers and the Crown Prosecution Service, I have concluded that this case cannot properly be referred to the Court of Appeal.”

‘Big Short’ investor Michael Burry shakes up his China bets, adding Temu-parent PDD
Michael Burry, best known for calling the subprime mortgage crisis, reshuffled his bets on ******** internet stocks last quarter, trimming holdings in Alibaba and JD.com and adding a new stake in PDD . Burry’s hedge fund, Scion Asset Management, cut its stake in Alibaba by 25% in the fourth quarter, according to a new filing. Trump administration adds note rejecting ‘gender ideology’ to government websites
Trump administration adds note rejecting ‘gender ideology’ to government websites
Newly restored pages on the websites of government agencies like the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) now include a disclaimer rejecting “gender ideology,” as spotted by 404 Media. The move allows agencies to comply with a recent court order to restore missing webpages, while continuing to push the Trump administration anti-trans executive order that led them to delete those pages in the first place.
You can see the disclaimer — which lifts language directly from President Trump’s order — on the FDA’s guidance document on the “Study of Sex Differences in the Clinical Evaluation of Medical Products” and a page linking to results from SAHMSA’s report on “Behavioral Health of Adolescents across ******* Identities.” Like a lot of the current administration’s slapdash attempts to crack down on diversity, equity and inclusion, the disclaimer doesn’t appear everywhere. A Centers for Disease Control and Prevention page on “********* Transmitted Infections Treatment Guidelines” doesn’t include it, for example.
The contents of the disclaimer are reproduced below:
Per a court order, HHS is required to restore this website as of 11:59 PM on February 11, 2025. Any information on this page promoting gender ideology is extremely inaccurate and disconnected from the immutable biological reality that there are two sexes, male and female. The Trump Administration rejects gender ideology and condemns the harms it causes to children, by promoting their chemical and surgical mutilation, and to women, by depriving them of their dignity, safety, well-being, and opportunities. This page does not reflect biological reality and therefore the Administration and this Department reject it.
Government agencies were first directed to “end all agency programs that use taxpayer money to promote or reflect gender ideology” by the Office of Personal Management (OPM) in January, which prompted the webpage takedowns, The Washington Post writes. Doctors of America, represented by Public Citizen, sued OPM and other agencies that took down pages over safety concerns, leading to the order to restore the websites to their original form this month.

Second judge halts Trump’s order targeting access to gender-affirming care
Second judge halts Trump’s order targeting access to gender-affirming care
Washington — A federal judge in Seattle put a pause on President Trump’s directive that seeks to restrict access to gender-affirming care for young people under the age of 19, becoming the second in so many days to halt the president’s efforts to target access to the treatments.
The order from U.S. District Judge Lauren King was issued Friday as part of a legal challenge brought one week ago by a group of three states — Washington, Minnesota and Oregon — and three physicians who provide the care for transgender patients being treated for gender dysphoria.
King, appointed by former President Joe Biden, held a hearing earlier Friday on the states’ bid to temporarily bar enforcement of Mr. Trump’s order limiting access to gender-affirming care for young people. A brief entry on the court’s docket indicated that King had agreed to grant a temporary restraining order and would issue a written order.
The block will remain in place while legal proceedings move forward.
King’s decision follows a similar move by a federal judge in Maryland, who on Thursday temporary halted Mr. Trump’s executive action for 14 days. His order came in a case brought by the ACLU on behalf of a group of seven transgender youth and two LGBTQ rights organizations.
The president’s directive, issued in his first week in office, threatens research and education grants awarded to medical institutions that provide gender-affirming care to patients under the age of 19. Treatments covered by the order include puberty blockers, hormone therapy and surgical procedures.
The Democrat-led states that sued the Trump administration over the order said it deprives transgender youth of life-saving medical care. They called it a “cruel and baseless broadside against transgender youth, their families, and the doctors and medical institutions that provide them this critical care.”
“It is an official statement of bigotry from the president that directs agencies to openly discriminate against vulnerable youth on the basis of their transgender status and sex,” state officials wrote in their lawsuit. “It is also a blatant abuse of power. The order usurps spending and legislative powers belonging exclusively to Congress, and seizes the States’ historic police powers to regulate the practice of medicine in violation of the Tenth Amendment.”
But the White House has defended the order as part of an effort to protect children from treatments that can have negative health consequences and that lack evidence as to their efficacy. Justice Department lawyers wrote in a court filing that the suit is also premature, as federal agencies have not threatened to revoke any particular grants at issue in the executive order.
Additionally, the Justice Department said Article II of the Constitution gives the president the authority to direct agencies to take steps to further his administration’s policies.
“That sort of order — cutting off at the jump the ability of the Executive Branch to even pursue a general course of action — would be a remarkable intrusion on a separate branch of government, in conflict with Article II,” they argued in the filing. “The president has the constitutional authority to direct his subordinates to pursue a general policy goal, consistent with all applicable law.”
Half of the states have enacted laws in recent years that limit access to gender-affirming care for minors. The Supreme Court is currently considering the constitutionality of one of those laws, from Tennessee, and will likely issue a decision in the challenge brought by former President Joe Biden’s administration, three families and a doctor by the beginning of July.
The Trump administration reversed the government’s position in that case and said Tennessee’s law does not violate the Constitution. It urged the Supreme Court to decide the case.

OpenAI has officially rejected Elon Musk’s proposal to buy the artificial intelligence startup’s nonprofit parent for $97.4 billion.
In a short letter to Musk’s lawyer on Friday, OpenAI’s attorney, William Savitt, said the OpenAI board had reviewed the proposal and determined that the billionaire’s “much-publicized ‘bid’ is in fact not a bid at all.”
The “proposal, even as first presented, is not in the best interest of OAI’s mission and is rejected,” Savitt wrote to Marc Toberoff. “The decision of the OAI board on this matter is unanimous.”
OpenAI Chairman Bret Taylor said in a statement that the company “is not for *****.”
“Any potential reorganization of OpenAI will strengthen our nonprofit and its mission to ensure AGI benefits all of humanity,” he wrote, referring to artificial general intelligence.
Earlier this week, Toberoff disclosed that Musk was leading a group of investors in offering to buy control of OpenAI for $97.4 billion. The offer was for the nonprofit that oversees the developer of ChatGPT. Toberoff said he submitted the offer on Monday.
“It’s time for OpenAI to return to the open-source, safety-focused force for good it once was,” Toberoff wrote at the time.
In a response on X, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman wrote, “no thank you but we will buy twitter for $9.74 billion if you want.” Musk is the owner of X, formerly Twitter.
Musk then replied to Atlman on X, with “swindler,” and in a reply to a different user, called him “Scam Altman.“

Transgender references removed from Stonewall monument website
Transgender references removed from Stonewall monument website
The Trump administration has erased references to transgender people from New York’s Stonewall National Monument website.
On the National Park Service website, the acronym LGBTQ+ has been shortened to LGB, standing for lesbian, gay and *********.
Other government websites have also been changed after President Donald Trump signed an order recognising two sexes only – male and female – on his first day in office.
Activists denounced the move on Friday and held a protest at the site, which is the country’s first national monument dedicated to lesbian, gay, ********* and transgender history.
“There is no Pride without Trans folks leading that fight!,” Stacy Lentz, the co-owner of The Stonewall Inn and CEO of The Stonewall Inn Gives Back Initiative, wrote on Instagram in a post announcing the protest.
“Trying to erase them from the birthplace of the modern LGBTQ+ rights movement will not happen!”
The National Park Service’s public affairs department said the agency had taken the actions to comply with the executive order signed by President Trump which described “restoring biological truth to the federal government”, according to a statement sent to the New York Times.
The BBC has contacted the National Park Service for comment.
On an older version of the park service website, saved by the digital web archive Wayback Machine, the monument’s main page read: “Before the 1960s, almost everything about living openly as a lesbian, gay, *********, transgender, or ****** (LGBTQ+) person was ********.”
The updated webpage now reads: “Before the 1960s, almost everything about living openly as a lesbian, gay, ********* (LGB) person was ********.”
Some other references to transgender people remain on the website, including the founding document for the Stonewall National Monument.
A 1969 police raid at the Stonewall Inn gay bar in New York led to riots, which marked a major turning point in the push for gay equality.
Former President Barack Obama designated it a US national monument in 2016. The monument covers 7.7 acres of land, including nearby Christopher Park.
In a statement on Thursday, the Stonewall Inn and the Stonewall Inn Gives Back Initiative said it was “outraged” at the changes.
“This blatant act of erasure not only distorts the truth of our history, but it also dishonours the immense contributions of transgender individual,” the statement said.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul called the change “cruel and petty”.
A protest against the website changes took place next to the Stonewall monument on Friday. Posters with signs such as “national park service you can’t spell history without a T” were held up by demonstrators.

The Stone Age Couple Locked in Eternal Embrace of Love
The Stone Age Couple Locked in Eternal Embrace of Love

A stone age couple locked in an eternal embrace was discovered back in 2007 by a group of archaeologists in a tomb near Mantua, a region in Lombardy, Italy.
Dubbed the Lovers of Valdaro is a pair of skeletons lying face to face, their bodies entwined in what appeared to be a loving embrace.
The sight of the skeletons brought to mind the tragic tale of Romeo and Juliet, two ill-fated lovers whose lives met a sorrowful end. As archaeologists examined the Valdaro Lovers, they made several intriguing findings.
Findings of the discovery of the stone age couple
To begin with, the couple perished approximately 6,000 years ago during the Neolithic *******. Double burials from that time ******* were already quite rare, but the positioning of this couple made the discovery even more exceptional.
Moreover, the young man and woman were both around 20 years old at the time of their demise. There were no signs of violence in their deaths, and it seems their bodies were arranged in this intimate pose after they had passed away.
In an interview with The Daily Mail, Menotti expressed her profound excitement about the finding, stating, “I have been involved in lots of digs all over Italy, but nothing has excited me as much as this. I’ve been doing this job for 25 years. I’ve done digs at Pompeii, all the famous sites. But I’ve never been so moved, because this is the discovery of something truly special.”
Despite the fascination surrounding the Valdaro Lovers, their true identities and the story of their lives remain shrouded in mystery. Who were these individuals, and what circumstances led to their intimate burial?
These questions continue to captivate the imaginations of researchers and enthusiasts alike, as they seek to unravel the secrets held by these ancient remains.

Resemblance to Romeo and Juliet
The photographs of the Lovers of Valdaro evoked a poignant narrative that bore a resemblance to Shakespeare’s renowned tragedy. In Romeo and Juliet, Romeo is banished to Mantua following his duel with Tybalt Capulet.
Upon his return to Verona, he tragically learns of Juliet’s supposed death, igniting the chain of events that culminate in the demise of both star-crossed lovers.
Early speculation surrounding the Valdaro Lovers revolved around the theory that the man, depicted on the left, had met a violent end, and that the woman had subsequently been ritually sacrificed to accompany his spirit in the afterlife.
Initial observations seemed to align with this theory. The male skeleton was discovered with a flint arrowhead embedded in his neck, and the female skeleton had a long stone blade positioned near her thigh, along with two flint knives beneath her pelvis.
However, upon closer examination of the bones, no evidence was found to indicate that their deaths had been the result of violence or aggression.
Interestingly, historians have not found any evidence of a Neolithic settlement in the Valdaro region. Instead, it is believed that the area was once a vast expanse of marshland intersected by rivers.
While this environment played a crucial role in preserving the bodies of lovers over thousands of years, it provides little insight into their personal lives or the reasons behind their peculiar burial arrangements.
What the future holds for the stone age couple?
One week after the remarkable discovery, a new question emerged: What would become of the Valdaro Lovers? Typically, when ancient remains are found during archaeological excavations, the bones are carefully transported to a laboratory for individual analysis, allowing researchers to reconstruct a broader understanding of the person’s life and death.
However, the Lovers of Valdaro presented a unique dilemma. For 6,000 years, they had remained locked in their loving embrace. Would they be separated for the sake of scientific examination?
Thankfully, Elena Menotti swiftly arrived at a decision. In an interview, she stated, “We want to keep them just as they have been all this time — together.”
Instead of extracting and separating each bone for subsequent reassembly, the archaeologists chose to carefully extract and transport the entire section of earth in which the couple was interred.
The block of earth, containing the entwined skeletons, was placed inside a wooden box and sent to an archaeological laboratory at the Musei Civici in Como for meticulous examination.
Eventually, the Valdaro Lovers found their permanent residence within a glass display case at the National Archaeological Museum of Mantua, where they can still be admired to this day.
Similar discovery of another skeleton pair
Two years following the discovery of the Valdaro Lovers, archaeologists working in Modena, Italy made an intriguing find in a cemetery from the late antiquity *******. They uncovered a pair of skeletons interred hand-in-hand.
Unlike the Valdaro Lovers, these skeletons were in a deteriorated state, making it challenging to ascertain certain details, such as their biological sex.
While it was not uncommon for archaeologists to come across buried couples or individuals found in a hand-holding position, the “Lovers of Modena” presented a unique twist ten years later: both skeletons were male.
Federico Lugli, a researcher from the University of Bologna who conducted a study in 2019 to determine the sex of the skeleton lovers explained, “At present, no other burials of this type are known.”
He further said, “In the past, several tombs have been found with pairs of individuals placed hand in hand, but in all cases, it was a man and a woman. The link between the two individuals in the burial in Modena, however, remains for the moment a mystery.”
Analysis of the couple
The researchers employed an innovative technique utilizing the analysis of dental enamel to ascertain the sex of the Modena Lovers. They focused on the presence of specific proteins within the enamel, namely AMELX, and AMELY. While both proteins are found in individuals of both sexes, AMELY is exclusive to males.
Although the identification of the Modena Lovers’ sex shed some light on their remains, it also gave rise to further inquiries, particularly regarding the nature of the relationship between these two men.
The circumstances surrounding their burial and the significance of their intimate connection remain enigmatic, leaving researchers eager to unravel the mystery.

Steve Bannon Has Dark Warning for Republicans Planning to Cut Medicaid
Steve Bannon Has Dark Warning for Republicans Planning to Cut Medicaid
Steve Bannon, former architect of the MAGA movement turned podcaster, warned that Republicans making cuts to Medicaid would affect members of Donald Trump’s fan club.
On the Thursday episode of War Room, while gushing over massive government spending cuts, Bannon warned that cutting Medicaid specifically would prove unpopular among the working-class members of Trump’s base, who make up some of the 80 million people who get their health care through that program.
“Medicaid, you got to be careful, because a lot of MAGA’s on Medicaid. I’m telling you, if you don’t think so, you are deeeeeead wrong,” Bannon said. “Medicaid is going to be a complicated one. Just can’t take a meat ax to it, although I would love to.”
Republicans’ nascent budget blueprints this week contained a proposal for the Committee on Energy and Commerce, which oversees Medicaid, to reduce the deficit by at least $880 billion from 2025 to 2034.
The gargantuan cuts would help Republicans pay to extend Trump’s 2017 tax plan, lightening the load for the very rich at the expense of the poor.
The House GOP plan would direct several congressional committees to find at least $1.5 trillion in savings across their programs. Bannon didn’t see that working out, saying that there was “confusion and mayhem” on Capitol Hill.
“Show me the trillion dollars in cuts. I don’t want a $2 trillion deficit. I want to see it cut in half. How’d you do it?” Bannon said. “What they’re talking about, the 1.5 trillion over 10 years, that’s $150 billion a year. Now, I realize this may be taken differently, but it’s $150 billion. It’s not gonna work.
“And to back it up, if you got the C.R. on the 14th. You gotta fund the government going forward, or maybe not, but I don’t see ’em shutting down President Trump’s government in his first 100 days,” Bannon said, referring to the government spending deadline on March 14.
“It’s—how could we possibly have a $2 trillion deficit; where are the DOGE cuts? We need ’em all. They’ve had at least enough time to identify at least the waste fraud abuse in all these different organizations. It doesn’t have to be perfect,” Bannon continued.
“I think it’s generally confusion and mayhem on Capitol Hill. But hey, maybe I’m wrong. Maybe there’s some logic here, and maybe they’re making some progress on this. But until we see the math, and I mean hundreds of billions of dollars in cuts, hundreds of billions of dollars in cuts, and stop whining about entitlements. Get into that discretionary spending. Get into the Pentagon.”
