  1. Loved-up royals share Valentine’s Day photos Loved-up royals share Valentine’s Day photos “My love, I will eat burgers & fries and fish & chips with you forever. Thank you for you,” wrote Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, in a Valentine’s Day message to Prince Harry. Apart from being an insight into what everyone really wants, even among Californian health fadsters, it was a chance to send a message to her husband, who is attending the Invictus Games in Canada. “Back home taking care of our babies, and missing my Valentine,” Meghan wrote on social media, saying she was “beyond proud” of his sports event for disabled and wounded veterans. The Prince and Princess of Wales also put out their own social media message, with a single heart emoji and a picture of the couple holding hands and kissing. The picture of Prince William and Catherine was particularly poignant, as a still from the video that she had issued last September alongside an announcement that she had completed her ******* treatment. It’s a slightly retro-image, with autumn colours and Enid Blyton shorts, taken in woodland in Norfolk and showing Prince William kissing Catherine. Prince Harry and Meghan are also kissing in their picture on social media, in a ****** and white photo of the couple behind what could be the two dishes linking the US and the ***, with a burger and fries and fish and chips a culinary marker of their own transatlantic “special relationship”. Meghan added the tag #lovewins to her Valentine’s message and signed off “As ever, M.” There’s also another important part of the romantic mood, with what looks like a big glass of red wine. Although as far as can be seen, neither of the couples had bought a bunch of garage flowers on the way home and laboured over a witty message. Why say it with flowers when you can say it on social media, with 4.6 million followers to offer their hearts? 2. Meta is reportedly working on humanoid robots that help with chores Meta is reportedly working on humanoid robots that help with chores If you look at your Roomba with disgust, thinking about what a far cry it is from the Jetsons’ Rosey the Robot, help is on the way. Bloomberg reported on Friday that Meta plans to leverage its advances in AI and augmented reality to build a platform for futuristic humanoid robots that can help with household chores like folding laundry. Meta is reportedly creating a new team within its Reality Labs hardware division, which handles Quest VR headsets and the long-term Orion AR glasses project. Although it will build robot hardware during development, Meta’s long-term goal is more like Android, where Google makes the software platform that almost all of the industry (outside of Apple) uses. Meta would make the underlying sensors, AI and software for other companies to put inside their hardware. In other words, it wants to be the Android of androids. Like The Jetsons’ Rosey the Robot, Meta’s version would help with household chores. (Warner Bros. / YouTube) At least initially, Meta plans to make household chores the project’s central focus. Bloomberg lists folding laundry, carrying glasses of water, putting dinnerware in the dishwasher and other home chores as examples to build excitement around what could be an unsettling product category for many people. (For examples of why those concerns may be warranted, look no further than the Unitree G1 robot that ran full-speed at Engadget’s Karissa Bell at CES, momentarily pinning her against the onlooking crowd.) Speaking of Unitree, Meta has reportedly held early discussions with the ******** robotics company, which also makes a quadruped “robot dog” that can run around, climb stairs and sit on its hind legs like a good girl. Meta is also said to have discussed its plans with California-based humanoid robot maker Figure AI, which can count OpenAI, Nvidia, Microsoft, Intel and Jeff Bezos among its investors. Karissa Bell for Engadget Today’s humanoid robots aren’t advanced enough to pitch in around the house like Rosey, but Meta believes all the resources it’s sinking into AI and XR are paving a road to that destination. Although the company thinks it will be a few years before useful humanoid robots are widely available, Meta Chief Technology Officer Andrew Bosworth reportedly views the company’s progress in hand tracking, low-bandwidth computing and always-on sensors as advantages. “The core technologies we’ve already invested in and built across Reality Labs and AI are complementary to developing the advancements needed for robotics,” Bosworth reportedly wrote in a memo. “We believe that expanding our portfolio to invest in this field will only accrue value to Meta AI and our mixed and augmented reality programs.” Meta isn’t alone in raising its eyebrows at the prospect of home robots for (likely rich) consumers. Last year, news broke that Apple was working on robotics. Ditto for Google. Both companies have published research papers on their robotics work. Flying cars may have to wait, but Rosey is looking a lot less like a pipe dream. 4. Split Fiction Studio Will Never Make a Live Service Game Because Game Director Does Not “believe in them” Split Fiction Studio Will Never Make a Live Service Game Because Game Director Does Not “believe in them” The live service trend has been growing within the gaming industry in recent years. Even with stories of big successes and failures, not every developer is eager to follow this trend. Josef Fares, founder of Hazelight Studios and director of It Takes Two and Split Fiction, has made it clear that his studio will never create a live service game. What a valid and true thing to say. | Image Credit: Hazelight Studios Fares and Hazelight Studios are returning to storefronts on 6 March 2025 for the release of ***** Fiction. The director behind 2021’s Game of The Year (It Takes Two) believes that a balance must exist between being driven by financial success and creativity. This is something he refuses to compromise on for Hazelight. Hazelight Studios isn’t going to make a live service title anytime soon This absolute boss man won’t allow it. | Image Credit: Hazelight Studios Josef Fares has never been one to hold back his opinions and we love him for it. It’s also nice to see that his stance on live service games is no exception. In a conversation with Eurogamer discussing live service games, he firmly stated, “We will not have them, I do not believe in them.” I hope more and more [developers] focus on their passion, and what they believe in. At the end of the day, we see clearly… and Hazelight is living proof… that when you trust in your vision and go with it, you can still reach a big audience. That’s what I want people to focus on. He further elaborated that he hopes more developers will focus on their passion rather than chasing trends. He notes that Hazelight Studios has proven that games centered on creative vision can still reach a large audience, pointing to the massive success of It Takes Two, which has sold around 23 million copies according to him. The industry has been leaning more and more toward the live service genre, but most of it has been hit or miss. EA’s CEO, Andrew Wilson, recently suggested that Dragon Age: The Veilguard could have performed better commercially had it been a live service title. We all know that’s just not true because that game had a lot more problems than that. While there’s nothing wrong with the live-service genre or its games, the industry’s attempts to always make the next hit game has become a bit annoying. So it’s nice to know that there are developers and studios that are focused on doing what they want and what they are good at. Split Fiction will just prove his words right The next adventure from the studio comes out on March. | Image Credit: Hazelight Studios Fares understands the financial realities of game development but argues that the industry must strike a balance between business and creativity. “I have an understanding that publishers have a lot of, you know, worries about the ‘money issue,’” he says on the topic of revenue. He also insists that developers should not be motivated only by the potential for revenue. “We are working with a piece of art here, so you have to respect the creativity as well.” And you know what? This is exactly the kind of mindset that Larian Studios’ Swen Vincke predicted that the 2025 Game of The Year winner would have in his speech at The Game Awards 2024. You can’t argue the logic of either of these studio bosses. Both of their games won Game of The Year, you know why? Because they made good games with only the player’s experience, joy, and fun in mind. You’d think the formula would’ve been cracked by everyone by now but it apparently hasn’t. 5. IRS employees accept OPM federal worker buyout; How the 2025 tax season may be affected IRS employees accept OPM federal worker buyout; How the 2025 tax season may be affected Feb. 6 marked the deadline for federal workers to accept the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM) and the Trump Administration’s offer of a buyout. These buyouts, or the option of “deferred resignation,” were offered via email from the OPM to over two million federal employees. All federal workers were given the choice of a buyout due to a majority of federal agencies downsizing by methods of “restructurings, realignments and reductions in force,” according to the OPM’s email sent to federal employees. People use IRS Direct File at the Internal Revenue Service Building on April 05, 2024 in Washington, DC. As of Wednesday, approximately 40,000 federal employees accepted the buyout offer, which is about 2% of the federal workforce, says Accounting Today. Employees that have chosen to accept the offer and resign will still get paid through September. Workplace diversity: Trump DEI war escalates, reshaping diversity in corporate America As for the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), employees who accepted the buyout offer have been told that they are expected to stay on the job through May 15, due to the agency deeming their work as essential to this year’s tax season. However, the OPM outlined in its email to federal employees, of all agencies, that if the buyout offer is accepted, then those employees would continue working until Feb. 28 and then would go on paid administrative leave beginning March 1. This means that while other federal employees are able to go on paid leave on March 1, IRS employees involved in the 2025 tax season will not be able to go on paid leave until after the tax filing deadline. IRS employee who cannot be placed on administrative leave until May include those in job positions within Taxpayer Services, Information Technology and the Taxpayer Advocate Service. 8. Instagram is testing a dislike button, but only for comments Instagram is testing a dislike button, but only for comments Instagram is testing a new dislike button, which the company has signaled is a way for users to effectively downvote a distasteful or irrelevant comment. The dislike button is only for comments, and not the actual content itself. The platform is testing this with both Reels and Feed posts. The service will not show a dislike count, though Instagram head Adam Mosseri says that dislikes will eventually contribute to comment ranking. In other words, this feature is most like the Reddit downvote button. This embedded content is not available in your region. “This gives people a private way to signal that they don’t feel good about that particular comment,” Mosseri wrote on Threads. “Our hope is that this might help make comments more friendly on Instagram.” A Meta spokesperson told TechCrunch that the primary purpose of the dislike button is to improve the quality of the comment section, echoing Mosseri’s post. This is just a test for now, so the button is only available to a “very small group of people.” It may get a broader rollout down the line. Instagram has been busy in recent months. Platform representatives announced that it was working on a video-editing app that looks eerily-similar to TikTok’s sibling app, CapCut. The platform even expanded the length of Reels to three minutes, which was seen as another TikTok mimic. It also recently got rid of third-party fact checkers because of freedom or something. 9. All-green Philly loves its Eagles on Valentine’s Day All-green Philly loves its Eagles on Valentine’s Day Philadelphia has turned green on Valentine’s Day to celebrate its Super Bowl champions. Swooning fans screamed and cheered on Friday as MVP quarterback Jalen Hurts and Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie took turns hoisting the Vince Lombardi Trophy at the start of the team’s victory parade through the City of Brotherly Love. Many fans camped out along the team’s parade route overnight, huddling under blankets and inside tents to secure prime spots near the Philadelphia Museum of Art, where the Eagles were to take the stage on the “Rocky” steps. Others decked out in Eagles jerseys climbed trees, perched themselves atop ladders and clung to a statue of Benjamin Franklin near City Hall to get a glimpse of record-setting running back Saquon Barkley and Cooper DeJean, the rookie defensive back who ran an interception into the end zone on his 22nd birthday. Barkley, at one point, hopped off one of the open-air buses to walk along the parade route and exchange high-fives with fans. Jordan Jaindl, who couldn’t make it to the 2018 parade after the Eagles won their first Super Bowl, wasn’t going to miss this one, bringing his wife and three daughters from Binghamton, New York. This team, he said, was the embodiment of the city. “Their work ethic,” he said. “How they have to grind for each win. We have to grind here in Philly.” Fans showed up with grocery carts stocked with food and booze while a few stayed warm in a hotel, sipping champagne. One group roasted a pig with the number “15” carved into the side — a final shot at Kansas City quarterback Patrick Mahomes. The Eagles, despite being underdogs, dominated the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday, shutting them out in the first half before finishing with a 40-22 victory. 11. Outlook for Feb. 17-21, 2025 Outlook for Feb. 17-21, 2025 Investors are going to need some of their concerns around trade or inflation to lift in order for the stock market to rally again. Stocks haven’t moved much since the start of the year. Even with an onslaught of policy developments and fears of sticky inflation rocking the market in 2025, a healthy economy underpinning strong earnings growth has mostly helped traders shrug off their concerns. The Dow Jones Industrial Average and S & P 500 are not even 1% off their recent records, while the Nasdaq Composite is not quite 2% off its own milestone. “You’ve got cyclical leadership. Earnings are really strong. You’re having a great Q4 season,” said Ross Mayfield, investment strategy analyst at Baird. “So, you’re just looking for the catalyst to spark a move higher.” Clarity around tariffs or inflation could be just thing to break stocks out of their muddle. .SPX 5D mountain S & P 500 Softer inflation One potential upcoming catalyst could be the personal consumption expenditures price index, set to release Feb. 28, that investors hope will confirm what they suspect after Thursday’s producer price index —that a softening in some of the underlying components means inflation is coming down more than the headline number suggests. A weaker PCE number could raise investors’ expectations that the Fed may wind up lowering interest rates more than the one quarter-point cut markets are currently pricing, according to Baird’s Mayfield. It could also spark a move down in Treasury yields, relieving pressure on the equity markets. “I think there’s potential for a choppy rest of February,” said Mayfield. “But, to the extent that PCE could beat to the downside, and bring a few Fed rate cuts forward in investors’ minds, that could be a nice spark for equities into a new month.” Mayfield expects the Fed could cut interest rates two or even three times this year. Trade policy Some further confirmation that President Donald Trump is wielding tariffs mainly as negotiating tools would also be a welcome reprieve for traders, who remain concerned that the inflationary impact of potential levies will offset any gains from deregulation. “There’s a bit of a tug of war there, clearly,” said Rhys Williams, chief strategist at Wayve Capital. “So, I do think some sort of break that Trump really does use tariffs just for bargaining chips and nothing that dramatically happens would be a positive from a macro point of view.” However, Baird’s Mayfield noted that traders will likely be kept on their toes in regards to trade policy, and will have to learn to live with the uncertainty around the president’s rhetoric on trade. “I don’t ever think that the market is going to get the clarity that they really want from the Trump administration on trade,” Mayfield said. “I don’t think that the administration is going to come out and say, you know, ‘hey, we’ve changed our minds, we’re pro free trade,’ or, ‘hey, these are the rules of the game for the next four years.'” “In many ways, the uncertainty and the kind of chaos, for lack of a better word, is part of the strategy,” he added. Resilient market Regardless of the uncertainty, many traders remain confident stocks can continue to climb to fresh heights this year, even if they do not make the eye-watering gains of 2023 and 2024. Wells Fargo Investment Institute noted this week that the likelihood of a “three-peat,” or a market that advances more than 20% three years in a row, is rare, having happened only one other time in the history of the S & P 500. Still, investors expect that the market’s resilience thus far this year is encouraging. “There’s so much that you know should really be holding the market back,” said Mark Malek, investment chief at Siebert. “And it still isn’t.” Week ahead calendar All times ET. 13. ‘Trapped in our home’ – Doorbell camera captures neighbour’s abuse and threats ‘Trapped in our home’ – Doorbell camera captures neighbour’s abuse and threats Tarah Welsh Housing Correspondent Watch: Doorbell camera footage shows Ben and Emma’s neighbour shouting abuse It’s the early hours of the morning in March 2024 and Ben is woken by shouting and swearing. It’s aimed at him, and he says it feels threatening. It’s the woman who lives in the flat below. An hour before, Ben could see and hear threats on the screen of his doorbell camera. It’s been rung multiple times and he says he’s barely slept. This is the 78th incident on a meticulous log Ben has been keeping since the anti-social behaviour started about a year before. He says he’s been “abused” and “physically threatened that we would be shot, stabbed and have our knees broken if we leave the house”. He says he now lives in a constant state of fear. Ben bought the ex-council flat in Wandsworth almost three years ago and around six months later, Drina Gray moved into the flat below. He says the issues began soon after. As well as threats, he says he and his girlfriend Emma are plagued by noise from her flat below, including the tenant’s dogs barking, music, shouting and vacuuming all through the night. He says the disruption even affected his ability to work. “Because I was so sleep-deprived, I was getting to work quite late. I couldn’t focus on my job. Ultimately due to just so much stress, so much anxiety, I lost my job.” Ben eventually got a new job but says he’s been left feeling “really helpless” and says the whole experience has had a detrimental impact on his mental health. Emma adds that she too has been left “terrified”. “We just feel trapped,” she says. Ben and Emma say their neighbour’s anti-social behaviour has left them feeling “really helpless” Ben and Emma are not alone in experiencing anti-social behaviour. According to the latest official data from the Crime Survey for England and Wales, 36% of people experienced or witnessed anti-social behaviour last year, up from 34% the previous year. Ben is a leaseholder in a council-owned block and says many of his complaints to Wandsworth Council went unanswered. He says he feels ignored, despite mentioning concerns about mental health and violent threats. Ben and Emma have called the police to their address more than 20 times and say while local neighbourhood officers have been helpful, they feel failed by the system and “let down” by response times when they call 999. In August, an official review panel – made up of police and public officials – found there had “not been good communication between agencies” and “none of the agencies has taken ownership of the case”. Wandsworth council has accepted it “could have acted more swiftly.” Ben has now complained to the housing ombudsman. Over the last year, across the ***, the Housing Ombudsman has ruled that of the 809 anti-social behaviour cases he has presided over, 67% of social landlords hadn’t dealt with the issue to an adequate standard. Richard Blakeway, the Housing Ombudsman, said: “Anti-social behaviour can cause unimaginable distress to people, have a profound impact on the community, and be complex for landlords to manage.” He added that he repeatedly sees cases where “failures prolong issues and leaves residents feeling unheard and continuing to suffer”. Victims’ commissioner Baroness Helen Newlove says anti-social behaviour is not being taken seriously enough The BBC showed some of Ben’s footage to Baroness Helen Newlove, the victims’ commissioner for England and Wales. “It shows that the system isn’t working, once again, to protect innocent people,” she says. Baroness Newlove’s husband Garry died in hospital after being attacked outside his home in Warrington, Cheshire, in August 2007 by three youths after he went to speak to a gang he believed had been vandalising his wife’s car. She says 17 years later, agencies still don’t understand the impact anti-social behaviour has on victims. She fears it will take another death for it to be taken more seriously and for it not be treated as “low-level” crime. She says her inbox is full of complaints from victims about anti-social behaviour. Baroness Newlove hopes new powers in the Crime and Policing Bill, being drafted this year, will improve protection for victims. In December, Ben’s neighbour, Drina Gray, pleaded guilty to charges including harassment and criminal damage and will be sentenced in March. Ben says the anti-social behaviour has continued and Ms Gray has been rearrested multiple times since. She returned to the flat after the first arrest but the BBC understands she is temporarily staying elsewhere as per her bail conditions. The council says following the court case, it is now seeking possession of the property. But Ben says he has no idea when Ms Gray will be permanently moved. In a statement, Wandsworth Council said it “takes criminal and anti-social behaviour very seriously, and we work with partners to both support residents and to take the appropriate action against those responsible. “This is a complex case where housing officers have been working closely with a number of different agencies, including the Police, to resolve the matter.” A spokesperson for the Met Police said: “Any form of anti-social behaviour is taken seriously and we work in partnership with local authority colleagues to ensure that issues raised are addressed”. Addressing Ben and Emma’s specific case, the spokesperson said the police were working to “ensure that the offender is brought before the courts when there is evidence to support it”. The BBC contacted Ms Gray for comment. 14. One DPS Hero That Gets Relentlessly Targeted While Ulting Should Also Get 0 Time Delay Like Moon Knight One DPS Hero That Gets Relentlessly Targeted While Ulting Should Also Get 0 Time Delay Like Moon Knight It’s been nearly two months since Marvel Rivals debuted for PC and consoles, and Netease Games’ hero PvP shooter is generally a pretty good time all around. Simple gameplay coupled with a colorful cast makes for a winning formula, and Rivals certainly lives up to the hype. However, there do exist some issues with the game – particularly with regards to hero balancing and optimization. A certain Marvel Rivals character has a lengthy ultimate that could perhaps be made a lot more usable by reducing the animations associated with it, which has caused some grief for players maining the same. Marvel Rivals’ Scarlet Witch needs a major ultimate rework Scarlet Witch needs a major rework | Image Credit: Netease Games Players who have invested a great deal of time into Marvel Rivals’ simple, yet effective combat system might notice that certain characters feel a lot less ‘playable’ as compared to other heroes – making them feel flat out inferior. This extends into team Ultimates, which have varying degrees of usefulness (and uselessness). In particular, Scarlet Witch’s ultimate ability stands out as being rather too long drawn out – in other words, the ultimate takes a second or two longer to cast than it ideally should. This results in a rather puzzling encounter where rival players have managed to finish off Scarlet Witch midway through her ultimate incantation which makes for some hilarious (but unfortunate) moments. Some heroes feel far superior to play | Image Credit: Netease Games This is in stark contrast to Moon Knight, who’s ultimate ability feels grossly overpowered by comparison, having a near instant deployment. This means that players usually cannot snipe Moon Knight when he begins casting the ability, which makes him all the more dangerous. A lot of grief could be avoided by simply ‘buffing’ Scarlet Witch’s ultimate. For starters, it would be nice to have her ultimate cast just a little bit faster – say by a second or two. As it stands right now, the default animation is too long and hinders gameplay more than anything. If anything, this is going to result in more and more players being frustrated with the Marvel Rivals character, which would in turn end up in them being abandoned by the player base – which is something Rivals is already facing. An abandoned, poorly balanced hero is not indicative of a good game, and it is hoped that Netease Games manages to fix these issues as soon as possible. This is not the only problem plaguing the heroes of Marvel Rivals Marvel Rivals is plagued with issues | Image Credit: Netease Games Marvel Rivals has a balancing problem. Its heroes vary in regards to their capabilities and usability, which is not a good thing – especially for a AAA live service title. Such powercreep would have been somewhat acceptable in a gacha game, but Rivals isn’t one – and should consider tackling the problem. Some heroes are just straight up worse than others, and there do not exist any specific niches they can fill. Making things worse, certain aspects of characters are flawed (such as Jeff the Land Shark’s ultimate being way too overpowered) and have not been addressed to this date. Netease Games needs to address these concerns for the betterment of its game, before its player base begins to look elsewhere. After all, listening to player feedback is quite important. 15. Gardner heroics in vain as Perry launches WPL with win Gardner heroics in vain as Perry launches WPL with win Ash Gardner and Beth Mooney both cracked superb half-centuries but it was their fellow *********** half-centurion Ellyse Perry who ended up trumping them in a scintillating opening to the Women’s Premier League in India. The trio of Aussie luminaries all shone with their fifties, and Gardner’s first knock as Gujarat Giants’ captain in Friday’s WPL launch match in Vadodara proved particularly special as she smote eight sixes in her blistering 39-ball 79 not out. Gardner also took two wickets in an exceptional first over as she looked on course to lead her side to victory over defending champs Royal Challengers Bengaluru, only for Perry to lead the fightback and Indian star Richa Ghosh to finish the job dazzlingly as RCB launched their defence with a six-wicket win. “Pretty flattening to be honest,” admitted a dejected Gardner, whose side, despite her heroics, were let down by poor fielding after the Giants had scored 5-201, leaving RCB having to pull off a record WPL chase to win. “Two-hundred was probably only a par score and we needed to bowl really well. It was not to be unfortunately. We dropped some chances, which hurt us in the end.” The most crucial miss came when Ghosh was dropped in the deep by Simran Shaikh as she hoicked her first ball off Priya Mishra, a full toss, to deep midwicket. It was a fatal let-off as Ghosh went on to play a stupendous innings, 64no off just 27 ******, to lead RCB to a win with nine ****** to spare. Gardner, who had picked up the key wickets of Smriti Mandhana and Danni Wyatt-Hodge with just her second and sixth ****** at the top of the order, was later particularly roughly treated in her second over by Ghosh, who smashed her for 4, 6, 4, 4 and 4 – 22 in all, plus one wide. The India wicketkeeper hit seven fours and four sixes and was given impressive support from Kanika Ahuja (30no off 13) as the pair led the champions home. Earlier, Perry, back after her hip injury suffered in the Ashes Test, had set the tone in RCB’s chase with a 34-ball 57, which featured two sixes and was facilitated by her being dropped twice. The great allrounder couldn’t bowl for RCB as she recovers from her injury, and they missed her excellence as Mooney (56 off 42) hit her fourth WPL half-century, which included three successive fours off the spin of compatriot Georgia Wareham, who proved hugely expensive with her 1-50 off three overs. Gardner, who’s taken over the captaincy to let Mooney concentrate on her wicketkeeping and batting, put on a spectacular show, depositing three successive sixes off Prema Rawat – straight, over deep midwicket and deep square leg – before getting to 50 off 25 ******. Three more sixes followed in an over from VJ Joshitha as she finished with eight maximums in total, equalling the WPL record in a single innings that New Zealander Sophie Devine recorded in 2023. 16. Italy president’s ‘Third Reich’ comments on Russia spark Rome-Moscow dispute Italy president’s ‘Third Reich’ comments on Russia spark Rome-Moscow dispute ROME (Reuters) – Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni accused Russia of “offending the entire Italian nation” on Friday as she stood by comments by the Italian president that compared modern-day Russia to Nazi Germany. In a speech last week, President Sergio Mattarella criticised the “wars of aggression” that led to World War Two. “This was the project of the Third Reich in Europe. The current Russian aggression against Ukraine is of this nature,” he said. Reacting to those statements with some delay, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova on Friday lambasted Mattarella’s remarks as “blasphemous inventions”. Meloni said in a strongly-worded statement: “The insults of the spokeswoman (…) offend the entire Italian nation, which the head of state represents.” “I express my full solidarity, as well as that of the entire government, to President Mattarella, who has always firmly condemned the aggression perpetrated against Ukraine,” she added. Italy has traditionally been one of the countries in Europe with the closest political and economic ties to Russia, but under Meloni it has firmly stood by Ukraine, including with military aid. 18. CDC’s “disease detectives” halved as part of DOGE cuts at health agencies CDC’s “disease detectives” halved as part of DOGE cuts at health agencies Half of the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention’s Epidemic Intelligence Service officers — a group known as the CDC’s “disease detectives” — were among the cuts made Friday by the Trump administration, multiple health officials tell CBS News. The cuts are among the thousands of probationary workers being let go this week across the federal government as part of efforts to shrink the federal workforce overseen by President Trump and the Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE, task force headed by billionaire Elon Musk. The CDC’s Epidemic Intelligence Service or EIS officers are hired in annual classes through a competitive process. As part of the fellowship, they serve for two years around the CDC or deployed to health departments across the country, often on the front lines of public health responses. Many go on to rise through the ranks at the agency after being selected for the program. All of the most recent class of hires to serve in the EIS were told Friday they were among the cuts, officials told CBS News. “The country is less safe. These are the deployable assets critical for investigating new threats, from anthrax to Zika,” said Dr. Anne Schuchat, a former top-ranking CDC official and alumna of the program, in a message. In all, around 1,270 are being let go from the agency out of 2,800 probationary workers. The cuts amount to around 1 in 10 of the CDC’s staff. It is unclear who decided which CDC staff to cut. While managers at the Atlanta-based agency were asked to rank probationary hires earlier this month, officials told CBS News that the final decisions on which staff to cut were handed down from Trump administration appointees outside the agency. Cuts are also being made at other agencies, though details were not immediately available. Many probationary workers at the Food and Drug Administration and National Institutes of Health told CBS News on Friday morning they had yet to hear about whether they would be among the cuts. “Many are young staff from all the training programs who managed to land a job after they finished. Now their dream is canceled,” said one health official. A spokesperson for the Department of Health and Human Services, which oversees the CDC and other health agencies, said Friday that they were supporting President Trump’s “broader efforts to restructure and streamline the federal government.” “This is to ensure that HHS better serves the American people at the highest and most efficient standard,” said Andrew Nixon, the department spokesperson, in a statement. Friday’s cuts come hours after new HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. had denied plans to make significant purges at the nation’s health agencies. In an interview with Fox News on Thursday evening after being sworn in to head the department, Kennedy praised the “lower level employees” he now leads as “good American patriots and hardworking people.” “If you’ve been involved in good science, you’ve got nothing to worry about. If you care about public health, you’ve got nothing to worry about,” he said. Alexander Tin Alexander Tin is a digital reporter for CBS News based in the Washington, D.C. bureau. 19. Kenyan AI workers form Data Labelers Association Kenyan AI workers form Data Labelers Association Artificial intelligence (AI) workers in Kenya have launched the Data Labelers Association (DLA) to fight for fair pay, mental health support and better overall working conditions. Employed to train and maintain the AI systems of major technology companies, the data labellers and annotators say they formed the DLA to challenge the “systemic injustices” they face in the workplace, with 339 members joining the organisation in its first week. While the popular perception of AI revolves around the idea of an autodidactic machine that can act and learn with complete autonomy, the reality is that the technology requires a significant amount of human labour to complete even the most basic functions. Otherwise known as ghost, micro or click work, this labour is used to train and assure AI algorithms by disseminating the discrete tasks that make up the AI development pipeline to a globally distributed pool of workers. Despite Kenya becoming a major hub for AI-related labour, the DLA said data workers are massively underpaid – often earning just cents for tasks that take a number of hours to complete – and yet still face frequent pay disputes over withheld wages that are never resolved. Screenshots shared by the DLA show that in the worst instances, data workers have been paid nothing for around 20 hours of work. “The workers power all these technological advancements, but they’re paid peanuts and not even recognised,” said DLA president Joan Kinyua, adding that while the labellers work on everything from self-driving cars to robot vacuum cleaners, many of the products their largely hidden labour powers are not even available in Kenya. Given the job specs of a lot of data work – which requires workers to be graduates and have high-speed internet connections and quality machines – DLA vice-president Ephantus Kanyugi said workers are being forced to making big upfront investments in their education and equipment, only to be paid a few cents per task. The workers power all these technological advancements, but they’re paid peanuts and not even recognised Joan Kinyua, Data Labelers Association He added employers in the sector are disincentivised to pay more – or even follow through on paying people for the work they’ve done – because the large surplus labour pool means when people inevitably get frustrated and leave, “they already have someone in the pipeline” to replace them. DLA secretary Michael Geoffrey Abuyabo Asia added that weak labour laws in Kenya are being deliberately exploited by tech companies looking to cheaply outsource their data annotation work. “A contract is supposed to be agreed within the confines of the law, but they know the law is not there, so it becomes a loophole they’re utilising,” he said. DLA members added the lack of formal employment contracts with clear and consistent terms throughout the sector also leads to a lack of longer-term job security, as work can change unpredictably when, for example, jobs are randomly taken offline, and allows sudden account deactivations or dismissals to take place without warning or recourse. On the contracts, Kinyua added there is no consistency, as while some are indecipherable due to the legal jargon, others will cover just a few days, and in some instances there is no contract at all. The lack of security is heightened by the fact the workers do not have access to healthcare, pensions or labour unions. The workers said all of this combines to create highly variable workloads and income, which then makes it difficult for the workers to plan for the future. On top of the day-to-day precarity faced by data workers, the DLA said many also have to deal with “content moderation trauma” as a result of having to consistently interact with disturbing and graphic images, as well as retribution from companies when they do raise issues about their work conditions. “Any time we raise our voice, especially the ‘taskers’ who are on the lowest level, we are dismissed automatically,” said one DLA member, who added contracts were no help in these instances because they would typically only specify a start and end date without any other information, and that she herself was dismissed when speaking up on behalf of others. To help alleviate these issues, the DLA will focus on getting workers mental health support, giving them legal assistance to deal with pay or employment disputes, providing them with professional development opportunities, and running advocacy campaigns to highlight common problems faced by data labellers. The DLA will also seek to put in place collective bargaining agreements with the data companies that sit between workers and the large tech firms whose models and algorithms they are ultimately training. As part of its efforts to push for better working conditions in the sector, the association is already working with the African Content Moderators Union and Turkopticon – which largely works with data labellers on Amazon’s Mechanical Turk platform – as well as the Distributed AI Research (DAIR) Institute. The organisation added it is already in touch with Kenyan politicians and is communicating with the Ministry of ICT to help lawmakers better understand the nature of their work and how conditions for platform workers can be improved. 22. NH University System Punishes Student Who Refused Pronouns in Byline: ‘Unconstitutional Action’ NH University System Punishes Student Who Refused Pronouns in Byline: ‘Unconstitutional Action’ A New Hampshire college student is demanding his school correct “its unconstitutional actions” after it removed his online publication because he refused to use personal pronouns in a byline. Liberty Counsel sent a demand letter to the University System of New Hampshire (USNH) on behalf of the unnamed student for infringing on his free speech rights by requiring personal pronouns in a newspaper article byline. According to the non-profit legal group, USNH published an online news article by the student last year and added the “He/Him” pronouns to the byline without his permission. When the student voiced his religious objections to the pronouns, his article was removed. “The student believes God created humans only male and female and that these sexes cannot change. Therefore, he contended that the pronouns communicated a false message that gender is subjective which is inconsistent with his Christian faith,” attorneys with Liberty Counsel explained. For nearly a year, the student repeatedly requested that the university remove the pronouns from his byline. Just last month, the university chose to remove the entire article rather than remove the two pronouns. “This was an outcome that (the student) did not request, and which a reasonable observer could conclude was retaliatory and unlawful censorship,” reads Liberty Counsel’s letter. In their letter, Liberty Counsel told the school that the right to free speech and expression includes “both the right to speak and the right not to speak at all.” “The courts have affirmed under the First Amendment that government organizations cannot compel individuals into ‘involuntary affirmation’ or force them to ‘mouth support’ for any religious, political, or ideological view that they do not believe,” explains a statement from the group. “Students do not shed their constitutional rights to freedom of speech or expression at the schoolhouse gate,” it added. The organization is requesting that USNH correct its unconstitutional actions and respond to Liberty Counsel’s letter by February 28, 2025. “The First Amendment guarantees a person’s right to express, or not to express, according to his or her religious beliefs and political values. In this instance, the University System of New Hampshire has arbitrarily attached pronouns to a student’s name which conveys a false message with which the student disagrees,” said Liberty Counsel Founder and Chairman Mat Staver. “Compelling everyone in the marketplace of ideas to express the same message about the same idea is unconstitutional. There is also no excuse for the university’s retaliatory censorship in removing the article when it simply could have granted the student’s request to remove the pronouns. USNH needs to correct this potentially costly mistake,” he added. CBN News has reached out to USNH for comment. 25. RX 9070 XT Red ****** packaging recommends a 900W power supply — AMD’s Frank Azor confirms custom cards with lower wattage requirements RX 9070 XT Red ****** packaging recommends a 900W power supply — AMD’s Frank Azor confirms custom cards with lower wattage requirements Packaging for one of AMD’s custom Radeon RX 9070 XT graphics cards has been uncovered, showing the alleged power supply requirements for the RDNA 4 GPU, which will rival the best graphics cards. Tomasz Gawronski posted an image of what appears to be the box of PowerColor’s Radeon RX 9070 XT Red ******, revealing an eye-opening 900W minimum power supply requirement. If you’re unfamiliar with PowerColor’s product stack, the Red ****** models are the top-end SKUs with the highest factory overclocks. Therefore, they consume more power than regular and moderately overclocked models. Also, note that the 900W requirement applies to the entire system, not just the Radeon RX 9070 XT. The RX 9070 XT Red ******’s 900W minimum power supply requirement is identical to the previous RX 7900 XTX Red ******. That means you’d need a power supply that can deliver at least 75A on the 12V rail. PowerColor previously used the Ryzen 9 7950X as the reference for the 900W requirement on the RX 7900 XTX Red ******. Compared to the vanilla RX 7900 XTX with a TBP (typical board power of 355W), which calls for an 800W unit (at least 65A on the 12V rail), the RX 9070 XT Red ******’s is 100W higher. AMD’s recommendation is based on a PC configured with a Ryzen 9 5900X. However, if we look at the competition, the RX 9070 XT Red ******’s requirement doesn’t shock us one bit. For example, Nvidia recommends an 850W power supply as the baseline for the RTX 5080, which is rated with a TGP (total graphics power) of 360W. In Nvidia’s case, the chipmaker utilizes a Ryzen 9 9950X for its calculations. If we had to make an educated guess, 300W of that 900W is likely headroom, so we’re assuming PowerColor estimates around 600W for the entire system. Perhaps 200W of that 600W is for hardware other than the GPU, so the specific TBP for the RX 9070 XT Red ****** comes down to around 400W. However, due to the factory overclocks, this isn’t indicative of the reference RX 9070 XT. There will be 9070 XT cards available at launch that will require lower minimum power supply wattages as will there be plenty with 8 pin power connectors for worry-free upgrading.February 14, 2025 Frank Azor, AMD’s Chief Architect for Gaming Solutions, responded to Gawronski (click on the embedded tweet above), clarifying that there will be 9070 XT variants with lower minimum power supply wattage requirements. In a way, the AMD executive didn’t shoot down the authenticity of the 900W power supply requirement on the leaked RX 9070 XT Red Devi, but he didn’t confirm it. Azor also poked some fun at Nvidia’s ongoing GeForce RTX 50-series shortage and 16-pin meltdown woes, saying there will be plenty of RX 9070 XT GPUs with 8-pin PCIe power connectors for “worry-free upgrading.” Get Tom’s Hardware’s best news and in-depth reviews, straight to your inbox. The RX 9070 and RX 9070 XT will debut in early March, focusing on the mid-range GPU market. Nvidia reportedly delayed its RTX 5070 to counter the RX 9070 series launch. Specs of the RX 9070 XT were allegedly leaked, revealing a Navi 48 die with 4,096 shader cores, 16GB of GDDR6 memory on a 256-bit memory interface, and a boost speed of up to 3,100 MHz. Another report allegedly revealed that the GPU performed similarly to an RTX 4070 Ti Super in Cyberpunk 2077 and ****** Myth Wukong. Frank Azor also confirmed that the RX 9070 XT would not be coming in a 32GB variant, dashing people’s hopes for potential 9070 XT workstation-focused partner cards.
