  1. You May Have Sold Nvidia for the Wrong Reason. Here Are 3 Reasons Why You Should Be Buying This Artificial Intelligence Stock Once Again. You May Have Sold Nvidia for the Wrong Reason. Here Are 3 Reasons Why You Should Be Buying This Artificial Intelligence Stock Once Again. Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA) has had a forgettable start to 2025 as shares of the semiconductor giant are down more than 3% as of this writing, and multiple factors out of the company’s control have played a part in its decline. For instance, the previous Biden administration proposed wide-ranging restrictions on sales of Nvidia’s chips to foreign customers, but the impact of those restrictions was mitigated to some extent by the recent announcement of the Stargate project that could see $500 billion being poured into artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure in the U.S. This development gave Nvidia stock a shot in the arm, but the chip designer would witness another sell-off very soon. ******** AI start-up DeepSeek released its R1 reasoning model and claimed that it was trained for a paltry $5.6 million. DeepSeek’s model was good enough to compete with the o1 reasoning model from OpenAI, a company that has been spending billions to build its AI infrastructure using chips from Nvidia. So, the low-cost nature and efficiency of the ******** company’s model sent Nvidia stock packing. Investors were worried about a potential drop in demand for its graphics cards that are being used for AI training and inference by major cloud computing companies and governments. The semiconductor giant shed almost $600 billion of its market cap in a single day on Jan. 27 following DeepSeek’s purported breakthrough. However, a report from semiconductor industry analysis company SemiAnalysis (via Tom’s Hardware) suggests that DeepSeek may not have revealed the actual cost of training its AI model. SemiAnalysis points out that DeepSeek reportedly incurred $1.6 billion in hardware expenses. It also adds that the ******** start-up has access to 50,000 of Nvidia’s previous-generation Hopper graphics processing units (GPUs), including 10,000 units of the flagship H100 processor. SemiAnalysis further points out that the $6 million figure highlighted by DeepSeek only refers to the potential money spent on training the model. It doesn’t consider other costs associated with research, data processing, fine-tuning the model, and infrastructure expenses. Given that DeepSeek has reportedly spent over $500 million on AI funding since its inception in 2023 and has its own data centers, there is a good chance that the cost of training the R1 model that sent Nvidia stock plunging was actually higher than what’s being touted by the ******** company. If that’s indeed the case, then investors may have hit the panic button for the wrong reason. However, the good part is that Nvidia’s poor start to the year means that investors have a window to buy this fast-growing company on the dip. Here are three reasons why doing that could turn out to be a smart move. Story Continues The first reason to buy Nvidia is its valuation. The stock’s expensive valuation following its tremendous rally over the past couple of years has been a cause for concern for investors and analysts. However, it is now trading at quite attractive levels. Though Nvidia’s trailing price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio of 51 is higher than the tech-laden Nasdaq-100 index’s 33.4, the forward earnings multiple of 30 is lower than that. The second reason why investors should consider buying Nvidia is related to DeepSeek. Assuming that DeepSeek’s claims are indeed true and it has managed to develop a low-cost model, it could lead to an increase in the demand for AI applications. British economist William Stanley Jevons observed in 1865 that the increased efficiency in coal consumption wouldn’t reduce the demand for coal. It would instead spur the usage of coal in more industries. This concept, known as the Jevons Paradox, can be seen in many other applications. For instance, the increasing fuel efficiency of vehicles has reportedly led to an increase in distance traveled while the arrival of low-cost LED bulbs hasn’t necessarily brought down electricity bills as people have tended to install more lights because of reduced costs. So, efficient AI models could lead to an increase in their demand, and that’s why the need for Nvidia’s chips is likely to remain solid. As such, DeepSeek’s purported breakthrough isn’t necessarily a bad thing for Nvidia. The final reason to buy Nvidia stock following its recent pullback is that cloud computing giants are set to keep spending more money on AI infrastructure. President Donald Trump’s $500 billion AI infrastructure push that’s being driven by the likes of Oracle, OpenAI, SoftBank, and Abu Dhabi-based AI investment vehicle MGX to build AI data centers will require more chips. Meanwhile, recent announcements from the CEOs of Meta Platforms and Microsoft supporting higher spending on AI also point toward healthy AI chip demand. Finally, a spike in bookings for the advanced machines sold by Dutch semiconductor equipment giant ASML provides further evidence that the appetite for advanced chips to support AI workloads isn’t going away. So, it won’t be surprising to see Nvidia’s fortunes turn around, which is why investors should consider using the recent pullback in this AI stock given the healthy growth that it is capable of delivering in the long run. 4. Baby Manatee Getting ‘Fresh’ with Florida Diver Is Impossible to Resist Baby Manatee Getting ‘Fresh’ with Florida Diver Is Impossible to Resist Growing up in Florida, I had a few close encounters with Manatees. There was the family of manatees that would swim up and down the river next to my high school. The injured animals who made their homes in the local aquarium. The giant creatures that would cluster so thickly in suburban cans during cold snaps that you could practically walk over their backs to cross the water. The slow, gentle manatee is one of the most famous (and photogenic) of the Florida megafauna, and unlike panthers or alligators, you don’t mind it so much when one approaches you, as this diver recently discovered in a Florida spring. The young manatee in this clip seems to have taken a shine to Florida diver and tour guide Josh Sander, who posts on social media as “FloridaGuideJosh.” Here, he is attempting to keep a respectful distance between himself and the manatee, but it’s the manatee that is being aggressive. Related: New Baby Manatee Needs ‘Boost’ From Mom While Learning How to Navigate Florida Spring A seasoned guide like Josh knows exactly how one should respect hte wildlife around him. He even posts the guidelines that anyone boating, swimming, or diving in manatee-occupied areas is urged to follow: Keep a respectful distance (no touching or chasing) Avoid blocking their paths or crowding them Watch for signs of stress, like quick movements or bubble trails Unfortunately, in this case, it’s the manatee that is making these guidelines difficult to follow. Please understand, this situation is extremely unusual, and as cute as it is to have this manatee nuzzling Josh’s leg, you should never approach a wild manatee or touch them while swimming or boating near one. Baby Manatee Development Baby manatees stay with their mothers and nurse for up to two years. During this time, they learn about foraging and migratory routes. Manatees are extremely sensitive to changes in water temperature and must spend cold winters inland, in warmer canals and freshwater springs with stable temperatures year round. Manatee Dangers The biggest dangers facing manatees are boating collisions and malnutrition. To help prevent accidents with manatees, experts advise boaters to wear polarized glasses when moving through waters where manatees are likely to be found, which helps them see under the water and avoid these deadly collisions. Manatee populations in Florida are suffering extreme food shortages right now, due to major reductions in their food sources of aquatic plants. Climate change and the hurricane season impacted vegetation in springs where manatees make their winter homes. Additionally, a lack of regulation regarding runoff and sewage treatment has also caused major food shortages. We hope this manatee isn’t after the man intros video because he’s hungry. 6. Arm looks to launch its own chip after landing Meta contract | Arm Arm looks to launch its own chip after landing Meta contract | Arm The British semiconductor designer Arm is reportedly planning to launch its own chip this year, after landing Meta as one of its first customers. The move represents a major overhaul of the SoftBank-owned group’s business model of licensing its chip blueprints to the likes of Apple and Nvidia. Rene Haas, Arm’s chief executive, is set to unveil the first in-house chip as early as this summer, according to a report in the Financial Times citing people familiar with the plans. skip past newsletter promotion Sign up to Business Today Get set for the working day – we’ll point you to all the business news and analysis you need every morning Privacy Notice: Newsletters may contain info about charities, online ads, and content funded by outside parties. Moving from designing chips to making its own complete processor could also put Arm into competition with some of its biggest customers in the £500bn semiconductor industry. Arm declined to comment. Shares in the company rose by more than 6% on Thursday after the Financial Times reported on the plans. The Financial Times also reported that the launch of Arm’s own chip is one step in a larger plan by SoftBank’s founder Masayoshi Son to make more money from its own intellectual property by moving into AI chip production and building a vast infrastructure network for artificial intelligence. SoftBank Group CEO Masayoshi Son. Photograph: Koichi Mitsui/AFLO/Rex/Shutterstock Last month, Son unveiled his Stargate initiative with OpenAI, which will spend an estimated £400bn building AI infrastructure, with Abu Dhabi state fund MGX and Oracle also providing funding, and Arm as a key technology partner alongside Microsoft and Nvidia. Arm’s chip is expected to be a central processing unit (CPU) for servers in large datacentres and customisable for clients including Meta, according to those familiar with the plans. Production will be outsourced to a manufacturer such as Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co, these people said. Another deal integral to Arm’s chipmaking project is Softbank’s expected acquisition of Ampere, an Oracle-backed chip designer of Arm-based chips for servers that could be valued at close to $6.5bn (£5.15bn). Cambridge-headquartered Arm has more than doubled in value to $173bn since it listed on the Nasdaq in 2023, buoyed by investor interest in AI. Arm had previously been listed in London, before Softbank took it over in 2016. Meta is the latest big tech company to turn to Arm for its power-efficient server chips instead of Intel and AMD, while Arm’s partnerships with Nvidia and Amazon have driven its rapid growth in the datacentres that power AI assistants from OpenAI, Meta and Anthropic. 8. ‘Everyone knows the Centrelink song’: how we learned to love – and remix – hold music | Centrelink ‘Everyone knows the Centrelink song’: how we learned to love – and remix – hold music | Centrelink Triple J once played it for eight hours straight. DJs have remixed it, dancers have performed to it, and many of us, have sat, frustrated, listening to it. Slowly the Centrelink hold music has seeped into the cultural zeitgeist and is now the backdrop for works of art and viral TikToks. Influencer and comedian Lyanna Kea’s 2024 TikTok of her busting out moves to the tune collected 91,000 likes and 2,297 comments – one person said they were a dance teacher who made their own routine while on hold, another said they were a staff member who had felt the wrath of frustrated callers. “Everybody knows the Centrelink song,” Kea says. “Everybody knows what it’s like to be on that hold for 14 hours before somebody puts you on only to hang up on you. “And that’s deep in everybody’s psyche.” In 1989, a then 16-year-old American, Tim Carleton, created the song, which was recorded by his friend Darrick Deel. Deel went on to work for Cisco, which is the number one supplier of corporate phones in the world, and used the tune. It went global. If a banger is defined as something that raises your blood pressure, then yeah, I define it as a banger Jonathan Homsey Opus No 1 is known globally for its place on the digital technology conglomerate Cisco’s hold playlist – and its part as the ambient backdrop for a 2023 Bud Light commercial. It has 2,288,086 plays and counting on Spotify. In 2018 Centrelink changed its tunes from a more classical selection that included Frédéric Chopin’s Waltz #3 in A Minor to have the synth melody of Opus No.1 on the playlist. “I thought that this was just the Centrelink song,” Kea said. “But it turns out that even people in Switzerland and Poland and like every other country have heard this song before.” While Australians aren’t alone, they are inspired. In 2023 artist Jonathan Homsey created a work for the Fringe festival where part of the audience stood in the Melbourne City Baths while a dancer performed a routine and the song reverberated across the pool. Lockdown acted as the muse. “I just wanted this communal experience to bring people back to that moment,” Homsey said. “I wasn’t the only one who was on hold while in the bathroom, on hold while brushing their teeth. “The music is the sound of purgatory. “I went through multiple lockdowns. The work [was] in cycles. So every 10 minutes I went back to dancing to the song as kind of a metaphor of, oh, here I am again.” Director at Music On Hold Australia, Jenny Crosby, said the winning formula of a good hold song is: a decent beat, consistent volume and can’t arouse too much emotion. Playing the radio, for instance, can upset listeners if they hear news they don’t like. “Honestly, if it was in the world of music generally, hold music would be very boring,” she said. skip past newsletter promotion Sign up to Breaking News Australia Get the most important news as it breaks Privacy Notice: Newsletters may contain info about charities, online ads, and content funded by outside parties. She says the fact callers still hear them, decades later, shows they were a good pick. “But generally the clients forget what they’ve got on hold half the time,” Crosby said. “And most big companies, when they put people on hold again, really don’t know what people are listening to.” Services Australia would not comment on record. Professor in social sciences at Melbourne University Lauren Rosewarne says the best thing Centrelink could do is stay away from the hold music’s hold on the zeitgeist. “As is something we’ve witnessed countless times before with corporations once they’re made fun of on social media, they try and get in on the joke,” she said. “Once that happens though, I imagine the humorous TikToks would promptly die off.” Rosewarne said the Centrelink song has got traction online because so many of us have experienced listening to the “monotonous and completely unrelenting” tune. “Rather than just reliving the awful experience though, it’s mocked and a sense of solidarity is created by the many people who recognise this situation,” she said. So is it good? Kea laughs. “If a banger is defined as something that raises your blood pressure, then yeah, I define it as a banger.”. 9. Indiana teen accused of plotting Valentine’s Day school shooting was obsessed with the Parkland mass shooter, police say Indiana teen accused of plotting Valentine’s Day school shooting was obsessed with the Parkland mass shooter, police say An Indiana teen who had an “obsession” with the school shooter who murdered 17 people exactly seven years ago is accused of plotting another Valentine’s Day massacre, authorities say. Trinity Shockley, 18, has been charged with conspiracy to commit ******* and two terrorism-related charges, according to Morgan County court records. CNN is trying to determine if Shockley has legal representation. Shockley is charged under the name Trinity but is transgender and goes by the name Jamie, according to an affidavit obtained by CNN affiliate WISH. It’s unclear which pronouns Shockley uses. The teen is being held in the Morgan County Jail without bond, police said. An affidavit says Shockley was grieving the recent death of their mother; had been bullied at school after being hit by a drunk driver; felt guilt after learning about that driver’s suicide; and became fixated by mass shooters, police said. Trinity Shockley – Morgan County Sheriff’s Office The probable cause affidavit also details how the fast work of an anonymous tipster, school offiicials and several law enforcement agencies may have thwarted a mass tragedy. “I am incredibly grateful for the quick response of our local, state, and federal law enforcement whose actions prevented what could have been a devastating situation,” Mooresville Schools Superintendent Jake Allen said. How authorities got tipped off An unknown person called the Sandy Hook tip line Monday to say a friend had access to an AR-15 rifle, had just ordered a bulletproof vest, and admires Nikolas Cruz – the gunman who murdered 17 people at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, officials said. The tip included messages Shockley appears to have sent on the messaging app Discord describing plans for the shooting, according to the affidavit. One of Shockley’s targets, according to the affidavit, was their best friend. “I’m shooting him,” Shockley allegedly wrote in messages with another person. “Parkland part two,” Shockley allegedly told another Discord user. “I’ve been planning this for a YEAR.” The FBI traced the IP address associated with the Discord account back to Shockley, the affidavit says. The FBI notified the Morgan County Sheriff’s Office, which contacted the Mooresville Metropolitan Police Department on Tuesday, the affidavit says. Investigators learned Shockley, a senior at Mooresville High School, planned a mass shooting at the school on February 14 – seven years after the Valentine’s Day massacre in Parkland, according to the affidavit. Mooresville is a town of about 10,000 residents, roughly 10 miles southwest of Indianapolis. “Nothing ever happens in Mooresville. It’s a small town,” Mooresville Police Chief Kerry Buckner told CNN affiliate WTHR. “To think somebody was plotting to hurt a lot of individuals of kids, future leaders of this country or whoever is pretty disturbing.” Teen professed love for the Parkland school shooter, affidavit says Shockley visited a school counselor Tuesday “about some ongoing issues and ended up disclosing to her that she was ********* attracted to Nikolaz [sic] Cruz, the Parkland School Shooter,” the affidavit states. “Trinity spoke about how she wanted to have multiple children with Nikolaz [sic] and that she has already named the children.” Cruz is serving a life sentence with no possibility of parole after he pleaded guilty to murdering 17 people and wounding 17 others in the deadliest mass shooting at a US high school. Shockley told the counselor about an “obsession” and ******* attraction to Cruz and showed the counselor a heart locket necklace with Cruz’s photo inside, according to the affidavit. The counselor notified the school’s administration Tuesday, “and a proactive response plan was being scheduled for prior to the next school day,” Mooresville Schools said. Police executed a search warrant on Shockley’s home Wednesday and discovered evidence of Shockley’s fascination with mass shooters – including notebooks found in their bedroom. “I cannot stop thinking about Nikolas,” Shockley wrote, according to the affidavit. “Why must he be so far away….I love you Nikolas.” One wall of Shockley’s bedroom was plastered with a collage of mass shooters, the affidavit said. They included photos of Dylan Roof, the white nationalist who killed nine people at a historically ****** chuch in South Carolina; ****** Stair, who used the alias Andrew Blaze and killed three coworkers at a Pennsylvania supermarket; and Cruz. “On Trinity’s backpack I observed three safety pin style buttons. Each button depicted one of the three murderers listed above, Dylan Roof, Nickolas Cruze [sic], and Andrew Blaze,” a detective wrote in the affidavit. Inside Shockley’s backpack, police found notebooks with swastikas and the words “kill,” “bang,” and “I hate you all DIE DIE DIE,” the affidavit says. Police also found several AR-15 magazines, a box of .40 caliber bullets and a soft armor vest in Shockley’s father’s room, according to the affidavit. The affidavit does not say if a gun was found by police, and it’s unclear if Shockley had access to a weapon. A mother’s death and a devastating accident On Tuesday, Shockley “had a breakdown while at school because her mother had recently passed away,” the affidavit said. The teen “skipped two classes at the end of the day” and told a guidance counselor about the breakdown, the mother’s death and how they were “scared about” their future, a detective wrote. Shockley also spoke about Cruz at length, according to the affidavit. “She hated him for what he did and at the same time she understood what he did,” the detective wrote. “Cruz wanted to ruin Valentine’s Day and ruin the families because he did not have his own. She can relate to that because of the loss of her mom and people talking about their moms.” Shockley also struggled with bullying and “anger issues” after being struck by a drunk driver, the affidavit said. An October 2022 Facebook post by Mooresville police shows a photo of Shockley with officers holding a large yellow poster thanking the officers who responded when Shockley was hit by a drunken driver. But after Shockley learned the driver died by suicide, the teen felt blame for his death, according to the affidavit. Shockley had been struggling with suicidal thoughts and had sought mental health help for years, the affidavit said. While Shockley remains in custody, “a variety of mental health resources are available to all students of Mooresville Schools,” the superintendent said in a statement Friday. “Our schools should always be a place of safety, learning, and belonging. We are committed to doing everything in our power to keep our schools safe.” For more CNN news and newsletters create an account at CNN.com Source link #Indiana #teen #accused #plotting #Valentines #Day #school #shooting #obsessed #Parkland #mass #shooter #police Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

  11. Scrumhalf Sezer, coach Cartwright make flying *** start Scrumhalf Sezer, coach Cartwright make flying *** start Hull’s new scrumhalf Aidan Sezer showed he could be the man that leads a long-awaited ******-and-white revival after his stunning masterclass delivered a 24-4 victory over Catalans Dragons in Perpignan. The 33-year-old has returned to the Super League from Wests Tigers in the NRL and repaid the faith shown in him by new coach John Cartwright, the former Brisbane Broncos assistant mentor, with a dynamic display to down the Dragons. Arthur Mourgue returned to his more regular fullback position after Sam Tomkins was ruled out by a hamstring injury, with fellow France international Cesar Rouge teaming up with NRL star recruit Luke Keary in the halves. Hull were able to give Sezer his first start for the club but he conceded the first penalty of the game with a high tackle on Rouge and Catalans forced their way over the line only for captain Benjamin Garcia to be held up. Prop Romain Navarette failed a head injury assessment, leaving Catalans low on forward power from the 20th minute and it was evident as they laid siege to the Hull line but could not muscle through. Then two touches of magic from Sezer with the boot, first forcing Tommy Makinson into a knock-on from a high ball then kicking directly to Mourgue, saw the ball knocked back into the hands of Jordan Lane for the first try of the game. Sezer converted for a 6-0 lead. Catalans pummelled the Hull line and winger Tommy Makinson thought he had scored in the right corner but the video referee spotted a knock-on before he grounded the ball. Hull then switched the momentum once more with a terrific burst from fullback and former Canberra Raider Jordan Rapana, supported by Cade Cust who crossed the line unhindered, with Sezer adding the conversion for 12-0 just before half-time. FC scored a killer try on the stroke of the interval when Sezer picked up a rebound from the Dragons and fed Tom Briscoe, who raced 30 metres to score as the hooter beckoned. Sezer once again made the conversion for a well-deserved 18-0 lead. A half-time roasting from Catalans coach Steve McNamara fired up ex-NRL star and second-rower Tariq Sims, who appeared to make late contact on Sezer although referee Chris Kendall sent him from the pitch for a green card assessment. Mourgue hit back for Les Dracs with a sprint to score in the right corner four minutes into the second half, but he was unable to convert his own try. Makinson again went close for the Dragons but was unable to control the finish, with Cust then scoring the killer blow with an interception from a Keary pass and 40-metre race to the right corner to score, although Sezer was off target from the touchline as the score moved to 22-4. Sezer then converted a penalty goal five minutes from time to give Cartright the perfect start. In the other match on Friday, last year’s grand finalists Hull KR scored a golden-point victory over the Castleford, winning 19-18. Joe Burgess, who played for the Sydney Roosters and South Sydney before returning to the Super League, scored three tries while Mikey Lewis nailed the winning drop goal. 12. RFK Jr. Just Kneecapped the CDC on His First Day RFK Jr. Just Kneecapped the CDC on His First Day Hours after Robert F. Kennedy Jr. pledged that the Department of Health and Human Services would not undergo a staff purge, it did. The Trump administration laid off half of its Epidemic Intelligence Service, otherwise known as the “Disease Detectives.” The lay off affected 1,260 staff, reported NBC News’s Lewis Kamb. Top-ranking officials with the CDC, the HHS subagency that oversees the program, told CBS News that the cuts would have a devastating effect on the country’s ability to assess blooming diseases. They are just some of the thousands of probationary workers taking a hit as Elon Musk’s DOGE combs the federal government for possible programs to slash. “The country is less safe,” Dr. Anne Schuchat, an alumna of the disease research program, told CBS. “These are the deployable assets critical for investigating new threats, from anthrax to Zika.” Many staffers that go through the program serve on the frontlines of public health responses before later rising through the ranks of the CDC. Another health official observed to the news outlet that many of the fired staffers were early career professionals who had been trained by the agency. “Now their dream is canceled,” the unidentified official said. Kennedy was confirmed by the Senate on Thursday. In an interview with Fox News after he was sworn in, Kennedy pledged that employees who work in service of public health had “nothing to worry about” under his tenure fronting America’s health policy. “If you’ve been involved in good science, you’ve got nothing to worry about,” Kennedy said. “If you care about public health, you’ve got nothing to worry about.” Kennedy’s role as secretary of HHS will have him oversee a budget of nearly $2 trillion and a staff of 90,000 federal employees, as well as hand him the reins of other critical health programs under the fold of HHS, such as the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. The 71-year-old’s “Make America Healthy Again” agenda has not been laid out in specifics, but Kennedy has vaguely promised to tackle the nation’s rising obesity rates and SNAP benefits (formerly known as food stamps), and has claimed he will work the Department of Agriculture to eradicate ultra-processed foods from the American market. 13. Man pleads guilty in shooting of US teen Ralph Yarl Man pleads guilty in shooting of US teen Ralph Yarl Laura Blasey BBC News, Washington Reuters Ralph Yarl, who was 16 when he was shot, survived his injuries An 86-year-old man in Kansas City, Missouri, has pleaded guilty to second-degree assault in the shooting of Ralph Yarl, a teen who accidentally visited the wrong address. Andrew Lester on Friday agreed the lesser charge as part of a plea deal, according to US media. His trial was due to begin next week. In April 2023, Ralph Yarl, 16, rang Lester’s doorbell as he went to pick up his younger brothers. Prosecutors say Lester shot the teen without speaking to him. The boy survived. His was one of several cases at the time of unarmed people being shot after confusing addresses, which launched debate over stand your ground laws in some US states that allows use of deadly force to prevent death or great bodily harm. The case prompted protests and attracted attention from civil rights and racial justice advocates, who argued that Ralph Yarl’s race was a factor in the shooting. Ralph is ****** and Lester is white. Police initially said there was a “racial component” to the shooting, but authorities ultimately opted not to charge Lester with a hate crime. Lester and his lawyers said that he was acting in self-defence and thought the teenager was trying to break into his home. In a 2023 court appearance, he initially pleaded not guilty to the assault and armed criminal action charges. He faced life in prison if convicted at trial. He will be sentenced 7 March for the lesser charge. He faces up to seven years behind bars. “We remain hopeful that his sentencing will not be merely a slap on the wrist but a decision that upholds the seriousness of his crime.” the Yarl family said in a statement to local media. Reuters Andrew Lester initialy pleaded not guilty in court in 2023. Ralph Yarl told authorities that his mother sent him to pick up his siblings around 22:00 local time that night. He mixed up similar street names – Northeast 115 Street and Northeast 115th Terrace – which put him on Lester’s doorstep and about a block away from the house he was trying to visit. After he rang the doorbell, Lester shot him twice – once in the forehead and once in the arm. Prosecutors have said that he “did not cross the threshold” of Lester’s home and survived after fleeing to neighbouring homes for help. Police initially detained Lester for questioning and released him without charges, sparking protests in Kansas City. Lester later turned himself in after an arrest warrant was issued. Ralph Yarl, who has since graduated from high school, is expected to deliver a victim impact statement at a sentencing hearing next month. The protests, which drew support from celebrities including Halle Berry, Kerry Washington and Jennifer Hudson, called for racial justice and drew attention to stand your ground laws. Critics argued they contributed to gun violence against ****** people in the US. The case was also one of several in the spring of 2023 in which Americans – many of them children and teens – were injured after minor mistakes were met with gun violence. 14. Unifil peacekeeper injured as convoy attacked in Lebanon Unifil peacekeeper injured as convoy attacked in Lebanon The United Nations peacekeeping force in Lebanon says its outgoing deputy commander has been injured after one of its convoys was “violently attacked”. The UN Interim Force in Lebanon (Unifil) said in a statement that the convoy was taking peacekeepers to Beirut airport when it was targeted and one of its vehicles set on fire. The mission has demanded a “full and immediate” investigation by Lebanese authorities. Several videos shared online show one white UN vehicle alight, as a group of young men, carrying yellow flags, chase and beat what appears to be peacekeepers as they attempt to flee. Separate footage shows a group of men shouting as they kick, hit and climb onto a convoy of three UN vehicles along a dark road. Unifil’s injured deputy commander, who was not named, was returning home after ending his mission, according to the statement. “We are shocked by this outrageous attack on peacekeepers who have been serving to restore security and stability to south Lebanon during a difficult time,” it added. “Attacks on peacekeepers are flagrant violations of international law and may amount to war crimes. We demand a full and immediate investigation by Lebanese authorities and for all perpetrators to be brought to justice. Unifil was created to monitor a buffer zone created near the border with Israel following the end of the 2006 Lebanon war, and has posts throughout southern Lebanon. Eric Adams denies quid pro quo, urges NYC to put ‘episode behind us’ Eric Adams denies quid pro quo, urges NYC to put ‘episode behind us’ New York City Mayor Eric Adams leaves the federal court after being charged with bribery and illegally soliciting a campaign contribution from foreign nationals, in New York City, U.S., October 2, 2024. Shannon Stapleton | Reuters New York City Mayor Eric Adams on Friday denied offering the Trump administration a quid pro quo deal in an effort to have his criminal corruption case dismissed, as a top federal prosecutor alleged before they resigned in protest. “I want to be crystal clear with New Yorkers: I never offered — nor did anyone offer on my behalf — any trade of my authority as your mayor for an end to my case. Never,” Adams said in a statement from his office. “I am solely beholden to the 8.3 million New Yorkers that I represent and I will always put this city first,” the Democratic mayor said. “Now, we must put this difficult episode behind us so that trust can be restored, New York can move forward, and we can continue delivering for the people of this city,” he said. The statement came after at least seven Department of Justice prosecutors resigned in response to top official Emil Bove ordering the dismissal of Adams’ case in Manhattan federal court. Danielle Sassoon, who was the acting U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, offered her resignation to U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi in a letter Wednesday detailing her objections to Bove’s order. That letter also alleged that, in a Jan. 31 meeting with Bove and members of her office, Adams’ lawyers “repeatedly urged what amounted to a quid pro quo.” Read more CNBC politics coverage The mayor’s attorneys indicated that Adams would only be able to help the Trump administration fulfill its sweeping immigration enforcement agenda in New York City “if the indictment were dismissed,” Sassoon wrote. “Mr. Bove admonished a member of my team who took notes during that meeting and directed the collection of those notes at the meeting’s conclusion,” she wrote. Bove, in a scathing letter Thursday, accepted Sassoon’s resignation and transferred Adams’ case to the main DOJ. Bondi said she expects Adams’ case will be dismissed Friday. President Donald Trump on Friday distanced himself from the conflict over Adams’ case, while brushing off the wave of resignations in the DOJ. “These are mostly people from the previous administration,” he told reporters in the Oval Office. “So they weren’t going to be there anyway. They were going to all be gone or dismissed.” Five other senior DOJ officials in Washington, D.C., resigned Thursday over Bove’s dismissal order. On Friday, prosecutor Hagan Scotten issued his own blistering letter of resignation, telling Bove, “I expect you will eventually find someone who is enough of a fool, or enough of a coward, to file your motion” to dismiss the Adams case.” This is developing news. 22. 3 Biden clean energy rules top targets for Senate GOP 3 Biden clean energy rules top targets for Senate GOP Republican U.S. Senator John Thune (R-SD), who was elected to become the next Senate Majority Leader, speaks to the media after a U.S. Senate Republicans meeting to vote on leadership positions for the 119th Congress, on Capitol Hill in Washington, U.S., November 13, 2024. Leah Millis | Reuters WASHINGTON — Senate Majority Leader John Thune plans to prioritize four Biden-era regulatory actions to bring up for votes in Congress to invalidate them, a spokesperson for the South Dakota Republican told CNBC. Three of these four regulations were finalized as part of former President Joe Biden’s broader effort to encourage the oil and gas industry to transition to renewable energy. “Senate Republicans are taking action to reverse these harmful regulations using the Congressional Review Act to cut through the red tape that’s fueling inflation and burdening American energy,” Thune said in a statement to CNBC. The first rule on the chopping block measures levels of methane emissions from oil and gas operations, and imposes a fee, known as the Waste Emissions Charge, for excessive production of the greenhouse gas. The second regulation would require seabed mining operations drilling on the Outer Continental Shelf to perform more comprehensive archeological surveys. This rule was created partly in response to concerns from Alaskan Native groups about damage to ancient historic sites. The third oil and gas-related regulation Thune will prioritize invalidating is a rule that raises the efficiency standards of natural gas fired consumer water heaters. All three of these regulations have been met with fierce opposition from industry groups. The fourth regulation that Senate Republican leaders are keen to roll back is a change to the rules that govern bank merger approvals, eliminating an expedited review track in the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency to give regulators more time to evaluate the merits of a proposed merger between banks. The Congressional Review Act grants the House and Senate the authority to reverse regulations and executive branch rules by a simple majority vote — as long as those rules were finalized in the last 60 legislative workdays. Lawmakers will likely have about four to six months to repeal certain regulations via the act. Republicans only need a simple majority to eliminate regulations under the CRA, not the higher threshold often required to pass the Senate. This means all four of Thune’s priorities are likely to pass. The ability to repeal Biden’s regulations is the latest sign of the GOP’s power in Washington, now that Republicans control the House, the Senate and the White House. “The American people gave us a mandate to fight back against these policies, and we are united in our commitment to dismantle the Biden administration’s most reckless actions, restore common sense, and deliver relief to hardworking Americans,” said Thune. The clock is ticking on Congress’ ability to revoke Biden-era regulations using the CRA: Any rules finalized before mid-August of last year were off the table from the start, and each of these rules has its own timeline. It’s likely the Senate will use the CRA to dismantle more rules. The last time Congressional Republicans held a trifecta, in 2017, they invalidated 16 regulations. Several other CRA actions are also making their way through the House, and would eventually require Senate approval. Thune and his colleagues are also exploring other ways to roll back Biden’s regulatory footprint, should the deadline pass for CRA review. 25. Brighton inflict deja-vu victory on hapless Chelsea Brighton inflict deja-vu victory on hapless Chelsea Chelsea have suffered a crippling sense of deja vu after Kaoru Mitoma’s eye-catching opener and Yankuba Minteh’s double earned Brighton a thumping 3-0 Premier League win at the Amex Stadium. Six days on from slipping to an FA Cup fourth-round exit in Sussex, Enzo Maresca’s Blues were ripped apart as their pursuit of Champions League qualification was damaged by a repeat result. Mitoma, who scored the winner in Saturday’s 2-1 triumph, produced a sensational first touch en route to rifling Albion into a 27th-minute lead before fellow winger Minteh struck either side of the break. A ********** south-coast outing for fourth-placed Chelsea was compounded by an early injury for Noni Madueke, and the Blues have now taken just nine points from their last nine fixtures after failing to register an attempt on target. Rampant Brighton, who were hammered 7-0 at Nottingham Forest just under a fortnight ago, climbed to eighth in the table thanks to a first league success at home since early November. Chelsea head coach Maresca claimed the chance to concentrate on top-flight commitments – and the Conference League – was a positive consequence of his side’s premature cup exit. As the Blues chase a return to European football’s top club competition, the Italian made four changes to the team he selected six days earlier, while Adam Webster replaced injured captain Lewis Dunk for Albion. Winger Madueke was among the recalled players but, with England boss Thomas Tuchel watching from the stands, he limped off inside 21 minutes to be replaced by Jadon Sancho after setting up a good chance for Cole Palmer. Palmer’s poor slice wide was the best opportunity of a cagey opening before Mitoma lit up a bitterly cold Valentine’s Day encounter with a moment of magic. Following a searching pass from goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen, the Japan winger sublimely plucked the ball out of the air before beating Trevoh Chalobah and rifling into the bottom right corner from inside the D. Chelsea briefly thought they had levelled 10 minutes short of half-time when captain Enzo Fernandez headed home Malo Gusto’s cross, only to be penalised for a push on Joel Veltman. The visitors’ frustration was heightened three minutes later following some more questionable defending. Chalobah conceded possession deep inside his own half and, after the legs of Filip Jorgensen prevented the sliding Levi Colwill turning Georginio Rutter’s cross into his own net, Danny Welbeck swiftly worked the loose ball to Minteh, who took a touch past Marc Cucurella before burying a low finish. Chants of “can we play you every week?” followed the second goal, and it got worse when Minteh exchanged passes with Danny Welbeck before cutting in from the right and finishing via a slight deflection off Chalobah.
