  3. Amid Trump crackdown, ******** crossings plunge to levels not seen in decades Amid Trump crackdown, ******** crossings plunge to levels not seen in decades Washington, D.C. — The number of migrants crossing the U.S. southern border illegally in President Trump’s first full month in office plunged to a level not seen in at least 25 years, according to preliminary government data obtained by CBS News. Last month, Border Patrol recorded about 8,450 apprehensions of migrants who crossed into the country unlawfully between official entry points along the U.S.-Mexico border, the statistics show. On some days during a record spike in ******** crossings under the Biden administration, Border Patrol recorded more than 8,000 apprehensions in a single day. February’s total, which could be adjusted when the government officially publishes the statistics, would be the lowest monthly apprehensions tally recorded by Border Patrol since at least fiscal year 2000, the last ******* with public monthly data. The final tallies usually don’t deviate much from the preliminary figures. Over the past 25 years, the only time monthly apprehensions came close to the level recorded in February was in April 2017, when Border Patrol apprehended 11,000 migrants at the southwest border, agency data show. While monthly data before fiscal year 2000 is not publicly available, the last time Border Patrol averaged roughly 8,000 apprehensions per month over a year was in fiscal year 1968, according to historical statistics. ******** crossings along the U.S. southern border have been trending downward over the past year, including under the Biden administration, after spiking to an all-time high in late 2023. They first dropped in early 2024 after ******** officials expanded efforts to stop migrants from reaching the U.S. border and then fell further in the summer following former President Biden’s move to sharply restrict access to the asylum system. But the reduction in ******** immigration has been precipitous since Mr. Trump’s inauguration. In January, Border Patrol agents at the ******** border recorded 29,000 apprehensions, down 38% from 47,000 in December. The drop from January to February was even more pronounced, amounting to a roughly 70% decrease. Trump administration officials have credited their sweeping, government-wide immigration crackdown for the dramatic decrease in unlawful crossings. At the U.S.-Mexico border, the Trump administration has empowered federal officials to swiftly deport migrants without hearing their asylum claims, under the premise that the country is facing an “invasion.” U.S. law says migrants on American soil generally have the right to claim asylum to delay or halt their deportation. Trump administration officials have argued the system has been systematically abused by smugglers and economic migrants, who don’t qualify for asylum. Mr. Trump has also directed the American military to help with immigration enforcement, deploying thousands of additional troops to the southern border and tasking military planes with deporting migrants. While Biden also moved to curtail asylum during his last year in office, Mr. Trump’s unprecedented actions are far more restrictive. Unlike the Biden administration, for example, the Trump administration is not processing, in any significant capacity, asylum-seekers at official border entry points. In fact, a Biden-era system that facilitated that processing through a government app was quickly terminated. The Trump administration is also considering adding another layer to its restrictions at the border, making plans to invoke a public health law known as Title 42 to summarily expel migrants on the grounds that they could spread diseases like tuberculosis. Whether migrant flows continue dropping, plateau or increase in the coming weeks and months remains unclear. Historically, migrant arrivals at the southern border have increased in the springtime. While its border strategy has yielded quick results, the Trump administration’s efforts in the U.S. interior, where the president has promised to conduct the largest deportation operation in American history, have encountered significant obstacles. Top Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials have been reassigned in recent weeks amid frustrations that the agency is not carrying out sufficient arrests and deportations. ICE’s detention capacity has also been stretched thin. As of Friday, ICE detention centers were at 117% capacity, with the agency detaining more than 45,000 migrants, 20,000 of whom were first apprehended at the southern border, according to internal government data. 4. Ramadan begins for hundreds of millions of Muslims Ramadan begins for hundreds of millions of Muslims The fasting month of Ramadan has began for hundreds of millions of Muslims. In Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Indonesia, Saturday was declared the first day of fasting. The start of Ramadan is determined by the sighting of the new crescent moon, which can vary by country. In Iran, where Shia Islam is the state religion and the second-largest branch of Islam, Ramadan begins on Sunday. During Ramadan, devout Muslims abstain from eating, drinking and smoking from dawn until sunset each day. In the evenings, people traditionally gather for a meal to break their fast, known as iftar. Fasting during Ramadan is one of the five pillars of Islam, which are the fundamental religious duties for Muslims. After the fasting month, the multi-day celebration of Eid al-Fitr, also known as the “Festival of Breaking the Fast,” follows. There are approximately 1.9 billion Muslims worldwide, with the majority living in Indonesia, India, Pakistan and Bangladesh. Muslims in Indonesia were shopping for sweets and new clothes and taking part in traditional festivities on Saturday. Celebrations in the country range from colourful night-time parades and cleaning family graves to preparing food for pre-dawn breakfasts and elaborate post-sundown meals. Each region in the vast archipelago of 17,000 islands has its own way to mark the start of Ramadan. In the Middle East this year, the start of Ramadan coincides with the expiration of the first phase of a fragile ceasefire that had temporarily paused the 15-month-long war between Israel and the ************ militant organisation ****** in the Gaza Strip. Images showed residents shopping and preparing for Ramadan amid the ruins of the largely destroyed coastal strip. Ramadan is considered a time of heightened tensions, particularly in the occupied ************ Territories and Jerusalem. ****** has called on its supporters to increase their presence at the al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem during Ramadan. The mosque is regarded as Islam’s third holiest site after the al-Haram Mosque in Mecca and the Prophet’s Mosque in Medina. In Syria, the fasting month also began, marking the first Ramadan after decades of rule by the al-Assad clan in the war-torn country. For the first time in 50 years, experts gathered on a mountain north of Damascus to observe the crescent moon and determine the beginning of Ramadan. In many Middle Eastern countries, widespread concerns about the future cast a shadow over the start of Ramadan. On Egyptian television, residents lamented economic hardship and high inflation. In Lebanon – despite the current ceasefire between Israel and the Hezbollah militia – high prices and the consequences of the conflict dampened the mood. with AP Source link #Ramadan #begins #hundreds #millions #Muslims Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  5. New charge filed against son of Buc-ee’s co-founder New charge filed against son of Buc-ee’s co-founder AUSTIN (KXAN) — The son of a Buc-ee’s co-founder, previously indicted on invasive visual recording charges, is now facing an accusation of child ************ possession, according to a Travis County arrest warrant obtained by KXAN. Mitchell Wasek, 29, is being charged with a third-degree felony offense of possession or promotion of child ************, with a $50,000 bond. RELATED: Son of Buc-ee’s co-founder arrested on 28 invasive visual recording charges KXAN reached out to an attorney representing Wasek and requested a comment on the new charge. This story will be updated when we receive a response. According to court records, detectives with the Travis County Sheriff’s Office executed a search warrant during their initial investigation into allegations Wasek had secretly recorded people in the bedrooms and bathrooms of homes owned by his family. The search warrant led to the seizure of several visual recording and data storage devices. In May 2024, a Travis County grand jury returned six separate indictments, charging Wasek with 21 counts of felony invasive recording. Those cases remain pending in district courts. As it investigated, TCSO also found “numerous images” of ********* explicit material involving subjects who appeared to be prepubescent during a review of the content on the devices, records state. TCSO’s detective submitted the images to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) to be compared with known victims in its database, which identified a juvenile female age 6-8 years old, according to the arrest warrant. The juvenile victim was linked to a federal investigation conducted by the FBI that led to the suspect who recorded the juvenile being convicted of two counts of production of child ************, one count of distribution of child ************, and another count for possessing the content, records show. The FBI confirmed the juvenile victim was 7-years-old when these images were produced and illegally distributed on the internet. According to Travis County Jail records, Wasek is not currently in custody or has not been arrested yet. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. 6. Google’s newest moonshot delivers internet by firing lasers through the air — Taara project upgrades to tiny 13mm photonic chips placed 1km apart Google’s newest moonshot delivers internet by firing lasers through the air — Taara project upgrades to tiny 13mm photonic chips placed 1km apart Taara, Google’s quirky underdog project of the day, seeks to fire internet signals using light beams across long distances above ground, an innovation over fiber optics, radio signal, and satellite reception. Developed by X, Google’s go-big-or-go-home research wing, the Taara project has announced that it has downsized its reception/output terminals from the size of a traffic light to a 13mm silicon chip. X, the moonshot factory (a subtitle only slightly more humble than “X, the everything app”), has been developing Taara for the last seven years as a replacement for fiber optic internet cable. Mahesh Krishnaswamy, Taara’s general manager, shared in yesterday’s announcement, “Fiber is high-speed connectivity’s gold standard, but it’s often unsuitable because it’s costly, impractical, or geographically impossible.” For those unable to dig for fiber, or in dense population centers where Starlink is less effective, Taara hopes to step in. Taara’s Lightbridges, the project’s first-generation release, can fire beams of non-visible light capable of sending data at up to 20 Gbps up to 20km away. The original bridges mount onto cell towers, measuring 2.5 ft tall. Much of this volume is filled with mirrors and sensors to self-calibrate against a bridge’s matched pair. With the new Taara chip, which shrinks the bridge down to the size of a fingernail, the mechanical alignment process is replaced with software that has allowed researchers to transmit data at 10 Gbps over 1km outdoors. “Our team imagines a future where connectivity isn’t bound by cables or constrained by cost,” Krishnaswamy continues. “By dramatically reducing the size and complexity of our systems, our aim is to eventually drastically reduce the cost of connectivity, creating a network effect within the industry.” Not just content to steal Elon Musk’s favorite letter, X researchers hope to compete against Starlink for use cases necessitating non-standard internet connections. Taara was originally born out of Google’s Project Loon, a now-shuttered project based on creating a network of hundreds of weather balloons transmitting internet connections. Taara, as a more practical terrestrial solution, avoids some of the traps of satellite connections, such as lower speeds in urban centers, while still having some quirks of its own (anything from misty weather to passing birds could temporarily interrupt the light beam firing your internet). To Taara’s credit, the technology has proven quite successful in the real world. Taara’s Lightbridges have already been successfully deployed across the planet, serving Caribbean islands whose undersea cables snapped, Indian urban centers waiting for 5G support, and a host of other scenarios. Taara’s next step is continuing to iterate on the new Taara chip design, planning “to extend both the chip’s range and capacity by creating an iteration with thousands of emitters.” The future beyond that? Pushing above-ground light-based internet as the future of internet connectivity, supplanting radio wave-based connections entirely. After all, the 5G airwaves are getting crowded, but there is “near-infinite bandwidth” in the space between infrared and visible light. Get Tom’s Hardware’s best news and in-depth reviews, straight to your inbox. With Google’s track record of prematurely killing off promising projects, we can only hope Taara survives long enough to live up to these lofty aspirations. Still, for every Stadia that dies in a fiery inferno, there is a Waymo that survives to drive another day. If Taara can cut the mustard, we’ll be excited to see how it shakes up internet connections. Maybe Google’s research wing can redeem the letter “X” after all. 8. Hall the hero as Young Socceroos win the U20 Asian Cup Hall the hero as Young Socceroos win the U20 Asian Cup The Young Socceroos have battled their way to glory in the Under-20 Asian Cup, beating Saudi Arabia in a penalty shootout in the final on a breakthrough day for *********** soccer. Trevor Morgan’s side were probably the superior team over an engrossing two hours in Shenzhen’s Baoan Sports Centre on Saturday night, but had to settle for a 1-1 draw over the 90 minutes before extra-time couldn’t separate the sides. In the shootout, though, the *********** teens kept their nerve best converting all their five spot kicks while goalkeeper Steve Hall proved their hero of the hour, saving the last of the Saudi Arabian penalties from Bassam Hazazi to seal a 5-4 win. Amid ecstatic scenes of celebration, the Young Socceroos become the first Australia team to win a major tournament since Ange Postecoglou guided the senior men’s outfit to the 2015 Asian Cup title. It put the seal on a remarkable tournament for the *********** youngsters, most of whom play in the A-League Men, as they won all six of their matches while also booking a place in the Under-20 World Cup later in Chile later this year. For Hall, once the youngest goalie ever to appear in the A-League Men who only turned 20 in January, it was a special night which had looked, initially, as if it might prove a heartbreaking one as he was culpable for the Saudis’ equaliser in first-half stoppage time. With the Young Socceroos leading 1-0 through Louis Agosti’s 24th minute volley, the Saudis levelled when Talal Haji’s rocket header was bulleted straight at Hall, who had already retreated behind his own goalline when he made the save. Hall looked crestfallen when, after a lengthy deliberation by VAR, it was ruled the keeper who plies his trade with Brighton in the Premier League had made the stop behind the line. But it was Hall’s only blemish as he made a couple of key saves even before he stuck out his left-hand instinctively to thwart Hazazi in the shootout and send his teammates into delirium. 9. HP says 90% of products for the U.S. will be made outside of China by October HP says 90% of products for the U.S. will be made outside of China by October Leading PC makers have been shifting their production away from China for several years already, and now that the Trump administration is imposing prohibitive tariffs on imports from China, they are not caught completely off guard. HP will continue to shift production to other regions, and by the end of its fiscal year, 90% of its products for North America will be made outside of China. Dell also expects its diversified supply chain to lower the impact of tariffs but will have to pass the extra costs to end users if it cannot mitigate them. “ By the end of fiscal year 2025 [in October], we expect more than 90% of HP products sold in North America will be built outside of China,” said Enrique Lotes, chief executive of HP, during the company’s earnings conference call with analysts and investors. “China will continue to be an important manufacturing hub for the rest of the world. As we look ahead, we are managing the current tariff increases on China and have included them in our outlook.” Early this month, Trump’s administration imposed a 10% tariff on imports from China, and earlier this week, U.S. President Donald Trump proposed an extra 10% duty on goods made in China and shipped to the U.S. For PC makers, this means increased costs. However, companies like HP seem to be prepared for this. HP and other PC makers have been working to restructure their production network and reduce reliance on China, which has historically played a key role in manufacturing for North America. Shifting production from one country to another is difficult and cannot be done as a short-term or mid-term solution. So, to mitigate the ongoing instability due to tariffs, HP stockpiled hardware during the quarter to protect against cost fluctuations and ensure a steady supply of products. Of course, such actions lead to higher inventory levels, which affects HP’s cash flow and cash conversion.  ”As part of the tariff response actions, we purposely produced additional inventory and also took advantage of strategic buy opportunities as part of overall cost mitigations,” said Karen Parkhill, chief financial officer of HP. “While these actions will be economically beneficial to the year, they increased our cash conversion cycle, and as we pay for and sell the increased inventory, we anticipate a further impact in cash conversion.” While HP clearly says that 90% of the products it sells in North America will be made outside of China by October, its rival Dell only says that it has a diversified supply chain, which is expected to help it mitigate the tariffs on China-made goods. “We built an industry-leading supply chain that is globally diverse, agile, resilient that helps us minimize the impacts of these trade regulations, tariffs to our customers and shareholders,” said Jeffrey Clarke, chief operating officer, at the company’s earnings call. “[…] Whatever tariff we cannot mitigate, we view that as an input cost and as our input costs go up, it may require us to adjust prices. That is what we have done in the past. I cannot imagine we are going to do anything differently.” Get Tom’s Hardware’s best news and in-depth reviews, straight to your inbox. 10. Got $1,000? This Exciting 6.5%-Yielding Monthly Dividend Stock Can Pay You $65 (and Growing) of Passive Income Each Year. Got $1,000? This Exciting 6.5%-Yielding Monthly Dividend Stock Can Pay You $65 (and Growing) of Passive Income Each Year. There are countless ways to start collecting passive income. One great option is to invest in EPR Properties (NYSE: EPR). The real estate investment trust (REIT) pays a monthly dividend that currently yields 6.5%. At that rate, a $1,000 investment would generate about $65 of dividend income each year. That passive income stream should rise in the future as the REIT grows its portfolio and increases its monthly dividend. It recently gave investors a 3.5% raise. With more portfolio growth in the forecast, EPR Properties should be able to continue producing a rising stream of passive income. EPR Properties is a specialty REIT focused on experiential real estate. It owns a diversified portfolio of movie theaters, eat & play properties, attractions, fitness and wellness properties, and other experiences leased to tenants that operate the properties. The REIT also has a small portfolio of educational properties. Those leases provide it with relatively steady rental income that it uses to pay its monthly dividend. Last year, EPR Properties generated $4.87 per share of funds from operations (FFO) as adjusted. It paid out a total of $3.40 per share in dividends. That gave it a dividend payout ratio of around 70%. The REIT used the cash it retained (about $110 million) to help fund new investments in experiential properties. Overall, it invested $264 million last year, with the balance covered by asset sales (it sold $74.4 million of non-core theater and educational properties for a net gain of $16.1 million) and its balance sheet capacity. It’s investing in several development and redevelopment projects, including building new Andretti Karting locations and an extensive expansion of The Springs Resort. It also invested in mortgage financing for Iron Mountain Hot Springs and acquired Enchanted Forest Water Safari in a *****-leaseback transaction. Those new investments will grow the REIT’s sources of stable income. They also align with its strategy of reducing its exposure to theater and educational properties while growing its rental income from other experiential property types. EPR Properties expects to generate between $4.94 and $5.14 per share of FFO as adjusted this year. That’s a 3.5% increase at the midpoint from last year’s level, driven by rising rents across its existing portfolio and new investments made last year. That outlook for growing rental income gave the REIT the confidence to increase its dividend by another 3.5% for this year, pushing the payment to $0.295 per share each month ($3.54 annualized). Story Continues The REIT expects to invest another $200 million to $300 million into new experiential real estate this year. It has already lined up $150 million of development and redevelopment projects that it anticipates funding over the next two years. The remaining will come from additional property acquisitions, mortgage investments, and new development/redevelopment projects. EPR Properties can fund that investment level internally via post-dividend free cash flow, additional asset sales, and its balance sheet. The REIT currently plans to sell between $25 million and $75 million of non-core assets. It has already agreed to sell four more theater properties. In addition, it is looking to unwind several underperforming joint ventures that hold experiential lodging properties. The REIT is currently capping its investment volume to a level it can internally fund until its cost of capital improves. However, with interest rates starting to fall and the REIT’s stock price on the rise (it’s up nearly 20% this year), its cost of capital is getting better. That could enable EPR Properties to ramp up its investment volume by selling stock and issuing new debt to fund additional deals, which could support higher FFO and dividend growth rates in the future. EPR Properties provides investors with a lucrative stream of passive income backed by a high-quality portfolio of experiential properties. The REIT has enough funding from internal sources to grow its portfolio, cash flow, and dividend at a decent rate. Meanwhile, with market conditions improving, it could start ramping up its investment volume to grow even faster. Because of that, it’s an exciting stock to buy for income and upside potential. AstroForge’s Odin asteroid-scouting spacecraft before its February 2025 launch. | Credit: AstroForge The first commercial spacecraft headed beyond the moon is on its way to deep space, but the mission is suffering from unknown issues as the team scrambles to get in contact with the probe. Odin, a small spacecraft built by U.S. space mining company AstroForge, piggybacked on the launch of a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket on Wednesday (Feb. 26) that sent the private Intuitive Machines’ Athena lander toward the moon. The 265-pound (120 kilograms) Odin is designed to obtain imagery of asteroid 2022 OB5 for a follow-up mission, named Vestri, which will aim to land on the asteroid. The missions are part of AstroForge’s plans to make space resources available on Earth. Initially the signs were good for Odin, with AstroForge posting an image of the spacecraft attached to the upper stage in space. The team is, however, still working to understand how the spacecraft is operating. “We don’t fully understand the state of the vehicle,” Matthew Gialich, AstroForge co-founder and CEO, said in a video update on the state of the Odin mission posted on X on Friday (Feb. 28). Odin is thought to be in a “sun safe mode,” which means the spacecraft is in a thermally safe and power positive attitude. “We do believe we’re in a power-positive state, though we don’t have telemetry coming down to confirm that. Hopefully we can get that tonight,” Gialich said. The spacecraft is also almost exactly where it was predicted to be, allowing for tracking using high-gain antennas, Gialich added. The team believes there are two possibilities for the issues. The first is that everything is fine with the spacecraft but there are issues back on Earth, such as AstroForge’s ground receivers not being configured correctly. Alternatively, the spacecraft could be in a really slow, uncontrolled tumble, though the team believes it has information to suggest this is not the case. The shouting match that unfolded in the final minutes of the highly anticipated meeting between the two leaders seemed to dash, at least for now, Ukrainian hopes that the United States could be locked in as a reliable partner in helping fend off, and conclude, Russia’s three-year onslaught. The exchange, which saw a frustrated Zelenskyy lectured by Trump and Vice President JD Vance over what they saw as his lack of gratitude for previous U.S. support, delighted officials in Moscow, who saw it as a final breakdown in relations between Washington and the Ukrainian leader. Many Ukrainians unfazed by the row Story continues below advertisement But many Ukrainians on Friday seemed unfazed by the blowout between Zelenskyy and Trump, expressing a sense that the Ukrainian leader had stood up for their country’s dignity and interests by firmly maintaining his stance in the face of chiding from some of the world’s most powerful men. Nataliia Serhiienko, 67, a retiree in Kyiv, said she thinks Ukrainians approve of their president’s performance in Washington, “because Zelenskyy fought like a lion.” “They had a heated meeting, a very heated conversation,” she said. But Zelenskyy “was defending Ukraine’s interests.” 1:56 Trump berates ‘disrespectful’ Zelenskyy, cuts short talks after D.C. meeting blow up The meeting at the White House was meant to produce a bilateral agreement that would establish a joint investment fund for reconstructing Ukraine, a deal that was seen as a potential step toward bringing an end to the war and tying the two countries’ economies together for years to come. Story continues below advertisement But as Zelenskyy and his team departed the White House at Trump’s request, the deal went unsigned, and Ukraine’s hopes for securing U.S. security backing seemed farther away than ever. Yet as the Ukrainian leader was set to return to Kyiv empty handed, his support at home seemed undiminished. Regional Ukrainian leader says president ‘held strong’ As two drones struck Ukraine’s second-largest city Kharkiv on Friday night, the head of the region which sits on the border with Russia, Oleh Syniehubov, praised Zelenskyy. He said the president held strong to his insistence that no peace deal could be made without assurances for Ukraine’s security against future Russian aggression. “Our leader, despite the pressure, stands firm in defending the interests of Ukraine and Ukrainians. … We need only a just peace with security guarantees,” Syniehubov said. Kyiv resident Artem Vasyliev, 37, said he had seen “complete disrespect” from the United States in the Oval Office exchange, despite the fact that Ukraine “was the first country that stood up to Russia.” “We are striving for democracy, and we are met with total disrespect, toward our warriors, our soldiers, and the people of our country,” said Vasyliev, a native of Russian-occupied Luhansk in eastern Ukraine. 1:36 Ukrainians who sought refuge in Canada outraged after Trump-Zelenskyy clash at Oval Office Trending Now U.S. woman claims she’s Madeleine McCann, shares DNA test to try to prove it James Cameron leaving Trump’s U.S., calls it ‘horrifying’ Vasyliev criticized the U.S. president for what he said was a failure to recognize the human cost of Russia’s invasion, saying Trump “doesn’t understand that people are dying, that cities are being destroyed, people are suffering, mothers, children, soldiers.” Story continues below advertisement “He cannot understand this, he is just a businessman. For him, money is sacred,” he said. Broad praise for Zelenskyy on social media Ukrainian social media was awash in praise for Zelenskyy late Friday, with officials on the national, regional and local level chiming in to voice their support for their leader. More on World More videos The outpouring resembled a recent surge in Ukrainian unity after Trump denigrated Zelenskyy by making false claims that Ukraine was led by a “dictator” who started the war with Russia — comments that led some of the Ukrainian president’s harshest critics to rally around him. Oleksandr Prokudin, head of Ukraine’s southern Kherson region, which was mostly occupied by Russia early in the war but later partially retaken by Ukrainian forces, said three years of war had hardened his countrymen to the ups and downs of the fight to survive. “We know what pressure is, on the front lines, in politics, in daily struggle,” Prokudin said. “It has made us stronger. It has made the president stronger. Determination is the force that drives us forward. And I am confident that we will endure this time as well.” Trump’s administration cast the heated exchange with Zelenskyy as part of its “America First” policy and slammed the Ukrainian leader for a perceived lack of gratitude for U.S. assistance. Story continues below advertisement But Zelenskyy’s backers in Ukraine praised his commitment to acting in Ukraine’s national interest — even if it meant coming into conflict with the president of the United States. “Unwavering commitment to Ukraine’s interests and devotion to his country. This is what we saw today in the United States. Support for the President of Ukraine,” Vice Prime Minister Oleksii Kuleba wrote on Telegram Friday. Not all of Ukraine’s political figures, however, were as full-throated in their praise for how the Oval Office meeting concluded. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said that he hoped “that Ukraine does not lose the support of the United States, which is extremely important to us.” “Today is not the time for emotions, from either side. We need to find common ground,” Klitschko wrote in a post on Telegram. –Associated Press writers Hanna Arhirova and Illia Novikov contributed to this report. 15. Best ********* brands to clean your bathroom, kitchen, laundry & more Best ********* brands to clean your bathroom, kitchen, laundry & more “Made in Canada” grocery staples are often clearly labelled. Cleaning supplies? Not so much. In the face of ongoing tariff threats from U.S. President Donald Trump, many Canadians are looking for domestic alternatives to American products, including those found in our cleaning cabinets. There are a ton of homegrown businesses that offer effective—and oftentimes eco-friendly—alternatives to big-name American cleaning brands. If you’re in the habit of buying all-purpose cleaners from U.S. brands like Lysol and Mr. Clean, you might be interested in made-in-Canada alternatives from Guests on Earth or ********* Tire’s FRANK, for example. Tru Earth and Good Juju are fantastic places to find laundry essentials, and Attitude is home to everything you need to clean your bathroom. Because big American cleaning brands dominate the market, finding *********-made alternatives can sometimes be challenging, which is why we created this resource. If you want to buy ********* products whenever possible, don’t neglect your go-to home essentials and everyday cleaning supplies. Click here to jump to our list of ********* cleaning and laundry brands There are a ton of ********* alternatives to American cleaning brands if you know where to look (Getty). “Made in Canada” vs. “Product of Canada” vs. “********* owned” vs. “Based in Canada” Unlike at the grocery store, where “made in Canada” labelling is made clear, the origins of fashion, beauty, personal care and home brands can be difficult to decipher. Is “made in Canada” the same as “based in Canada?” What about a ********* brand no longer 100 per cent *********-owned, like Hudson’s Bay and Tim Hortons? To satisfy a “Product of Canada” claim, Canada’s Competition Bureau requires non-food products to meet a “higher threshold of ********* content” (98 per cent). “Made in Canada” claims are subject to a 51 per cent threshold of ********* content “but should be accompanied by a qualifying statement indicating that the product contains imported content.” When a brand is based in Canada or owned/designed by Canadians, that doesn’t automatically mean it’s made in Canada. Shoppers still choose to support a *********-owned or founded business, but its manufacturing may occur overseas. That said, buying from online and brick-and-mortar ********* retailers can help support ********* workers, too. Roots, for example, is no longer completely *********-owned, but its leather goods are still hand-crafted in Toronto, Ont. 17. The Original Pantry Cafe to close after 100 years in service, union says The Original Pantry Cafe to close after 100 years in service, union says The Brief Employees of the Original Pantry Cafe in downtown LA may soon be out of a job. The diner was previously owned by former LA Mayor Richard Riordan, who passed away in 2023. Riordan’s trust allegedly informed employees the restaurant will close if they don’t cut their union ties. LOS ANGELES – Union workers at a beloved diner in downtown Los Angeles reportedly learned of the restaurant’s fate on Wednesday night. The Original Pantry Cafe, which has been a staple for over 100 years, is set to close on Sunday, March 2. What we know Last week, union members and employees held a protest outside the Original Pantry Cafe, located in the 800 block of S. Figueroa Street, to fight for the future of the restaurant. The diner was previously owned by former LA Mayor Richard Riordan and was placed in a trust following his death in 2023. UNITE HERE Local 11 representatives said they met with the Riordan Trust and that the trust intends to close the restaurant as scheduled on Sunday, March 2 at 5 p.m. “The Pantry is demanding that, in order to avoid the closure and loss of workers’ jobs, workers must give up their demand for job security and continued union representation if the restaurant changes hands,” a UNITE HERE Local 11 press release said. On Thursday, dozens of community members held a dine-in to support the diner’s employees. PREVIOUS COVERAGE: What we don’t know It’s unknown if employees are willing to cut their union ties to preserve their jobs. Employees that spoke to FOX 11’s Gina Silva explained their workplace is more than just a job – it’s a family. The other side In a statement to FOX 11, The Original Pantry said that employees and the union have known since last summer that the property would likely be sold and the restaurant would likely be closed. According to the Riordin estate, the union, seeking to renegotiate the labor contract, demanded that any future owner of the property operate a restaurant there, accept the labor contract without renegotiation, retain all employees and go through an extensive process to change any of the restaurant’s operations. The estate called these demands “totally unacceptable,” because they would hurt the estate’s ability to find a buyer. “Per the Mayor’s expressed wishes and legal requirements, the estate must maximize the value received by his estate’s largest beneficiary, The Riordan Foundation,” the estate’s statement read. The estate said that selling the property is the best way to do that. “It was the Mayor’s desire, and is the legal obligation of his estate, to ensure that the Foundation has the maximum resources to help our entire community, not simply to benefit the several dozen current employees of the Pantry,” the statement continued. What’s next Community members are scheduled to gather and pray outside the diner on Ash Wednesday on March 5 between 7 a.m. and 8 a.m. The Source Information in this story is from Gina Silva’s previous report, a Thursday press release from UNITE HERE Local 11 and a statement from The Original Pantry sent to FOX 11 on Feb. 27, 2025. 18. People who are truly content with life do these 10 little things every day, says happiness expert People who are truly content with life do these 10 little things every day, says happiness expert When life gets complicated, our instincts often lead us down the wrong path. We isolate ourselves when community could heal us, or we dream of endless free time when a new challenge could fulfill us. I’ve spent 15 years studying happiness, and I’ve had the opportunity to speak with thousands of people across all walks of life, spanning all income levels — from executives in corner offices to frontline workers. I’ve learned that no matter what their background or circumstances are, the happiest people have figured out how to actively train their brains to seek joy and contentment. DON’T MISS: How to start a side hustle to earn extra money What truly content people do every day 1. Prioritize friendships: The happiest people treat their close relationships as a non-negotiable rather than a “nice-to-have.” And when they schedule friend time, they try to focus on doing activities together instead of just a quick catch-up. 2. Rest strategically: Mentally exhausted? Go for a jog. Brain fried from analytical work? Do something creative with your hands. The most content people know how to intentionally match what depleted them to their mode of recovery. 3. Engage in creative work: People who spend time on creative activities, whether it’s cooking, writing, gardening or painting, report significantly higher levels of happiness. When you create something new, even if it’s a hilariously bad watercolor, your brain lights up in ways that scrolling on your phone never triggers. 4. Cultivate community: The next time you feel stressed or overwhelmed, reach out instead of pulling in. Help someone else or find a cause that fills you with a sense of purpose. Your brain might protest at first, but your happiness will soar. 5. Don’t be afraid to geek out: The happiest people don’t play it cool. They actively seek out the things, people and activities that light them up. You know the enthusiasm you feel when you talk about an activity you love? That’s actually the secret ingredient to daily happiness. 6. Set firm boundaries: Research says we need two to five hours of free time every day for peak happiness. Happy people protect their “me time,” and they know that those work emails can wait until later. 7. Manage your energy: Happy people recognize their personal peaks and valleys, scheduling demanding tasks when they’re naturally most alert and recovery periods when they typically slump. They create days that flow with their biology, rather than fight against it. 8. Embrace micro-connections: Research shows that random conversations with people you don’t know consistently improve your mood, so that chat with your barista might just be the happiness booster you never knew you were missing. 9. Savor the good: Truly content people don’t rush. They slow down to fully absorb positive moments — the beauty of the sunset, the taste of good food, the feeling of accomplishment. By lingering in these experiences, they train their brains to experience joy more deeply. 10. Pursue meaningful progress: Content people are always celebrating the small wins along their journey. They understand that the sense of forward momentum itself generates more joy than reaching the final destination ever will. The happy mindset The people I’ve met who have true joy in their lives don’t view happiness in terms of a spotlight moment — the standing ovation, the milestone achievement or the perfect day. They consider it more like a string of lights. Each small bulb might seem insignificant on its own, but together they create something magical. Start with just one of these small, intentional happiness habits today, and watch as your capacity for flourishing, satisfaction and contentment grows over time. Lebanon seizes $2.5 million bound for Hezbollah, sources say Lebanon seizes $2.5 million bound for Hezbollah, sources say BEIRUT (Reuters) – Lebanon seized $2.5 million in cash from a man arriving from Turkey on Friday, the finance ministry said, with three sources saying the money was destined for militant group Hezbollah. One of the sources said it was the first time such a seizure had been made. There was no immediate comment from Hezbollah. “The detainee and the seized funds will be handed over to the investigation division at the General Directorate of General Security,” Lebanon’s finance ministry said in a statement, without making a reference to Hezbollah. Its weakened stature has been reflected in Lebanon’s post-war politics, with the group unable to impose its will in the formation of a new government and language legitimising its arsenal omitted from the new cabinet’s policy statement. Reality Check is a new Sun News series holding those in power accountable, shining a light on local issues, and answering readers’ essential questions. Have a question or concern we can answer? Email *****@*****.tld. The City of Myrtle Beach is gearing up to host their annual budget retreat. According to an email sent to local media members on Feb. 10, city spokesperson Meredith Denari said the budget retreat would once again take place at Santee Cooper’s Wampee Conference Center in Pinopolis, SC from March 12 through March 14. According to Google Maps, the fastest route from City Hall in downtown Myrtle Beach to the conference center is two hours and seven minutes. That means the budget retreat is significantly closer to Charleston than to Horry County. This sparked concern among some Myrtle Beach constituents who took to Facebook to express their feelings about the budget retreat being held so far away. The retreat is open to the public and local media, according to the city. In response to some of the criticism, council member Bill McClure responded to comments saying he would get them a free hotel room. “The offer is . . . if you folks are willing to sacrifice your personal time, I’m willing to cover your hotel room,” McClure wrote. “Why speculate what happens when you can see what happens.” Initially, it was unclear who would pay for the hotel rooms. On Friday afternoon, McClure confirmed that it was a genuine offer. “Absolute genuine offer and of course, the money would have come from my personal funds,” he wrote in an email to The Sun News. According to Denari, who said she also saw the post, McClure posted that on Facebook on his own accord. “The city would not pay for a member of the public’s hotel room and I’ve never heard of a council member offering to do that before,” she said. “The city has never paid for a member of the public’s hotel room to attend Budget Retreat.” Denari said she believed McClure meant he would pay for it with his own money, not that the city would fund it.
