Adrian Barich: let me explain the appeal of golf to those who just don’t get it Adrian Barich: let me explain the appeal of golf to those who just don’t get it This column is for those who love golf and perhaps their partners, who may, or may not, be as enamoured with the sport. My community service for this week is to explain to those who just don’t quite get it. Why are many of us fascinated with a game that involves hitting a very small ball into a very small hole, with tools spectacularly ill-designed for the purpose, as a wise man once said. And there are lot of us who are huge admirers of golf; it boomed during COVID-19 and doesn’t seem to have lost any of its lustre. This is despite the fact that some statistics suggest only half of all golfers score under 100 for 18 holes, with just 26 per cent consistently scoring under 90. (I’ve never been in this territory but incredibly a lucky 2 per cent of golfers shoot under 80.) I have a different scoring system; I’m out to beat my teenage son and if possible, shoot under my age for nine holes. It’s been magical teaching (and I use that word lightly) my son to play golf. From the very first day, when I had to explain to him that your tee time is sacred and when it’s 10.44am at “Royal Wembley”, you’re there 10 minutes before and you don’t leave. It’s not an approximate thing. If you haven’t gone to the bathroom by 10.40am, you just have to hold on, Tommy boy. Golf has a long list of rules and etiquette that make it unique among sports. This includes that you must be quiet during someone’s swing and you’re not supposed to step on another person’s putting line. In fact, golf is one of the few sports where you can hit the ball into the sand trap, spend 15 minutes trying to get out, and then apologise to the other players for making them wait. Yes, it’s been a wonderful journey of discovery for Tom, just as it was when I took up the game. I have amused him with stories of the funny things that have happened to me on a golf course. Like when I played in celebrity golf day at a prestigious course and the announcer talked up the abilities of a certain giant West Coast player; he predicted the bloke would hit the ball “miles”, only to see the unfortunate ruckman top his drive and the ball roll about 3m. Then there was the hilarious moment when another footy star was ordered over the course public address system to move back from the ladies’ tee to the men’s. Three times this happened, until the popular Eagle yelled back “I’m playing my bloody second”. On another occasion, in a pro-am in Mandurah, I wandered unseen around the back of the biggest bunker on the course, only to see a fella grab some sand and throw his ball out of the trap. An absolute no-no. I never breathed a word of the “crime” as that sort of cheating could ruin a man’s reputation. And even cheating is a bit of a grey area in golf; not many would frown on the use of the Florsheim wedge in the bush (that is, kicking your ball out of a bad spot) during a social round, or when you have a windy (when you swing and miss the ball completely) and claim it was a just a practice shot. But blatant skulduggery, especially if you’re playing for money, is a mortal sin. For some golfers, the best wood in their bag is their pencil, if you know what I mean. But now to why golf is so magical. For some reason, walking around a beautiful golf course never really wears you out. It clears your mind and almost always makes you happy. That’s partly because of the meditative effect of touching grass along with the great view, I reckon. You must play golf to understand what it does to you: messing around with your friends, having a laugh, the difference between pulling your driver and trying to smash the ball, to then trying to finesse a chip, to delicate putts and trying to read a green . . . over and over for 18 holes. It’s almost impossible to feel down when playing golf. Fresh air, sunshine, exercise and discipline: all great things! What’s not to love? It should be compulsory for all stressed people. It’s one of the few places where you can take a break from being an adult and just enjoy a few hours of peace. There’s nothing quite like the feeling of lining up a perfect shot, swinging with all your might, and then watching the ball go straight into the bush, then on the next hole sinking a putt with the precision of a surgeon and suddenly you’re Tiger Woods at the Masters. Making a birdie on a par three is statistically better than a PGA player. Golf allows you to take your time, too. There’s no need to rush. It’s “me time”. Men in particular love spending hours on the course without anyone questioning where they are. And of course, no one remembers the triple bogey on the last hole; it’s all about the shot that made you feel like the Tiger for about 30 seconds. And you can see it if you’re familiar with the vehicles that travel. People will pull over in the same spot to finish a conversation, finish a meeting. And you know that they’re familiar with the reception there,” he says. Successive governments have plugged millions of taxpayer dollars into improving mobile coverage across Australia. But the perennial problem facing the country is its sheer size, compared against its population size, and whether it is cost-effective to build towers for places with low populations, or places people briefly travel through, such as highways. The universal outdoor mobile obligation, to be introduced by the Labor government as legislation if it wins the next election, would expand existing obligations for triple zero access across the nation to include outdoor voice and SMS coverage, and also aim to improve the availability of mobile services during disasters and power outages. The arrival of new satellite services could help fill the gap. New technology, an old problem Low-earth orbit (LEO) satellites fly between 500 and 2,000 kilometres above sea level, and rotate the Earth multiple times a day. While the world’s craving for a constant connection has led to these technologies being developed and used globally, the proliferation of a growing number of smaller satellites and service providers has caused concern among astronomers, around issues such as light pollution and space junk. But they are quickly filling the gap in telecommunications services for remote places where it is too cost-prohibitive to roll out fixed networks or mobile towers, and offer better quality service than geostationary satellites such as the National Broadband Network’s (NBN) Sky Muster satellites. NBN Co is in the advanced stages of selecting an LEO provider to eventually replace the ageing satellite service in operation now – but meanwhile, more than 200,000 people in Australia have signed up to Elon Musk’s Starlink service as an alternative. From fixed to phone Satellite services have initially been limited to fixed services. But advances in the technology are shifting, allowing people to have direct-to-device access to satellite connections. This means that – provided the person is standing outside – they could access satellite on their mobile phone for texting and calls. In the recent Los Angeles wildfires, T-Mobile used its direct-to-device service in partnership with Starlink to allow customers using existing 4G handsets to make calls and send text messages despite traditional mobile network outages. The Albanese government is banking on this advancement to plug ****** spots across Australia and make networks more resilient in the event of power outages or natural disasters. Scant detail – and the Elon factor There is scant detail on how much it would cost. Officials in Senate estimates hearings last week could not put a price tag on the new universal outdoor mobile obligation, saying cost was “a matter for future budget consideration by government”. Neanderthal Extinction Linked to Genetic Crisis 100,000 Years Ago Neanderthal Extinction Linked to Genetic Crisis 100,000 Years Ago The extinction of the Neanderthals is one of the most intriguing mysteries in paleoanthropology, with researchers speculating everything from shifts in the climate to war with modern humans may have escalated their demise. Many have wondered if our lost human cousins simply didn’t have enough variety to cope with these changes. A new study backs up the hypothesis that a dramatic decline in the diversity of their genes prior to their extinction is likely to have played a major role. Carried out by an international team of researchers, the study took a relatively unique approach, using the anatomy of the ear canal and existing Neanderthal genetics to find strong indications of a genetic bottleneck a little over 100,000 years ago. By comparing the shapes of the ear’s semicircular canal in fossils from across Europe and western Asia with those in modern-day humans, the researchers could gauge the relative variety of body morphologies among different groups of humans. The researchers analyzed several different bottleneck scenarios. (Urciuoli et al., Nature Communications, 2025) “The development of the inner ear structures is known to be under very tight genetic control, since they are fully formed at the time of birth,” says anthropologist Rolf Quam, from Binghamton University in New York. “This makes variation in the semicircular canals an ideal proxy for studying evolutionary relationships between species in the past since any differences between fossil specimens reflect underlying genetic differences.” Crucial to the study was the Croatian fossil site of Krapina (dating back 130,000 years), and several late Neanderthal sites across France, Belgium, and Israel (dating back 41,000-64,000 years). Something apparently happened between those two points to affect genetic variation, shown through ear canal shapes. It points to a big reduction in the number of people in a population prior to a point around 40,000 years ago, when the Neanderthals‘ time would come to an end. Ear semicircular canal shapes were studied in fossils from several sites across Eurasia. (Urciuoli et al., Nature Communications, 2025) This study doesn’t examine any possible reasons for the drop in genetic diversity, but a number of factors have been suggested in the past – ranging from climate change to increased competition. “By including fossils from a wide geographical and temporal range, we were able to capture a comprehensive picture of Neanderthal evolution,” says anthropologist Mercedes Conde-Valverde from Alcalá University in Spain. “The reduction in diversity observed between the Krapina sample and classic Neanderthals is especially striking and clear, providing strong evidence of a bottleneck event.” However, while the study helps to answer some questions, it also raises some new ones. The fossils in Krapina showed an unexpected level of diversity, similar to that of much older samples going back some 430,000 years. That counters the widely held assumption of a much earlier genetic bottleneck contributing to Neanderthal evolution, making a single reduction in diversity shortly before their extinction more likely. The researchers are keen to apply their ear structure analysis to more samples and sites across the world, which should reveal more about how our distant cousins lived, traveled, and eventually died out. “The present study represents a novel approach to estimating genetic diversity within Neandertal populations,” says Quam. The research has been published in Nature Communications. It’s a question I often ask myself, as I ponder whether my latest perimenopausal outburst at my husband is entirely justified. Obviously, the answer to that is yes — there is a correct way to stack the dishwasher, and that is absolutely not it. But if I was in any doubt, I could always consult the definitive arbiter of such things: the good old Reddit forum. Each year millions of people ask the search engine this very question, and those visiting the site weigh in via the comments section. It’s fascinating to read people’s judgments. Unfortunately, it’s now a lot harder, as there is a British comedy drama with the same name, and people are now discussing this brilliant new show using that handle instead. It’s very confusing. If you’ve not yet caught up with Am I Being Unreasonable? (and yes, the name is inspired by those Reddit forums) — you must! It’s from Rain Dogs and This Country creator Daisy May Cooper (who also stars), and the first series is a work of quiet genius. It’s all about Nic (Cooper), a mum stuck in a subpar marriage, grieving the loss of the man she’s been having an affair with. Because that had been a secret, she doesn’t have anyone to share her pain with, channelling her grief in an array of self-destructive directions. Playing out in parallel is the story of the developing friendship between Nic and another school mum, Jen (Selin Hizli, the show’s co-creator). As the show progresses, getting steadily twistier and thornier (it really does get very, very dark), it becomes apparent both these women have hidden agendas and plenty of secrets — it’s riveting to watch it all unfold. Series two continues in a similar vein, boasting stand-out performances from its brilliant ensemble cast, which includes Lenny Rush as Nic’s young son, Ollie. He won a BAFTA for his performance, despite the fact he’s still a kid. And yes, he really is that good. Am I being unreasonable in saying you MUST watch this show? Obviously, no. A wind advisory has been issued by the National Weather Service for the San Gorgonia Pass area near Banning and Desert Hot Springs, with forecasted winds of 30 to 40 mph and gusts expected to reach 55 to 65 mph. The advisory is in effect from 10 a.m. Saturday to 4 p.m. Monday. “There will be a brief break in winds late Saturday night into Sunday morning before picking up again Sunday afternoon,” the National Weather Service said in its advisory. “Winds this strong can make driving difficult, especially for high profile vehicles. Use extra caution.” Palm Springs could also see gusts as high as 40 mph Saturday, with areas of blowing dust after 1 p.m., according to the weather service. Otherwise, the weather will remain mild, with forecasted highs near 80 degrees Saturday and 74 on Sunday, though there’s a slight chance of rain in Palm Springs on Sunday night into Monday. The windy conditions expected in the valley prompted the South Coast Air Quality Management District to issue a windblow dust advisory in the area, effective from 4 a.m. Saturday to 7 a.m. Sunday. PM10 levels are predicted to be particularly bad Saturday night into Sunday morning, potentially ranging from “Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups” to “Very Unhealthy” levels. Meanwhile, the weather could be a bit more turbulent nearby in the San Jacinto Mountains. A wind advisory has been issued from Saturday morning to Sunday morning for the Idyllwild-Pine Cove area, with gusts expected to reach 50 to 60 mph. The strongest winds will be on the desert slopes of the mountains, according to the weather service. The mountains could also see some snow heading into next week, with a winter weather advisory issued for Idyllwild, Big Bear City, Lake Arrowhead and other mountain communities in Riverside and San Bernardino counties from 10 a.m. Sunday to 4 p.m. Monday. Snow totals could range from 1 inch at lower elevations to 3 to 5 inches at areas above 5,500 feet. The Idyllwild area could see some rain before the snowfall, with a slight chance of rain in the forecast Saturday. Watch in full: The remarkable exchange between Zelensky, Vance and Trump JD Vance’s remarkable dressing down of Volodymyr Zelensky in the Oval Office on Friday showed the US vice-president unafraid to take centre stage as an attack dog, rather than serve like some of his predecessors as a self-effacing political understudy. It was Vance who led the attack on Zelensky before Donald Trump joined the fray at the White House in a meeting that had been cordial until the vice-president spoke up to laud the president for seeking what he described as a diplomatic solution to the Ukraine-Russia war. “What kind of diplomacy, JD, you are speaking about?” said Zelensky, who has been critical of direct talks between Washington and Moscow. “What do you mean?” “I’m talking about the kind of diplomacy that’s going to end the destruction of your country,” Vance responded, tearing into the stunned Ukrainian leader. “Mr President, with respect, I think it’s disrespectful for you to come into the Oval Office to try to litigate this in front of the American media.” He also accused Zelensky of having campaigned on behalf of Democrats during the 2024 presidential election. But Vance used the occasion to launch a blistering assault on the state of European democracy, accusing continental leaders of censoring free speech and failing to control immigration. “If you’re running in fear of your own voters, there is nothing America can do for you,” he said. The audience of politicians, generals and diplomats was horrified. This was not the usual – and now widely accepted – argument that Europe should do more to pay for its own defence and security. This was a full-blown ideological assault – a sign that the US under Mr Trump is not just pivoting away from Europe, shifting its security focus to China, but is also seeking to promote its own Trump-style populism on the European continent. Not for nothing did Vance have dinner after his speech with the leadership of Germany’s far-right AfD party. His speech provoked a backlash from European leaders, writers and academics. Yet Vance chose to take them on online, engaging in detailed exchanges on X with several, including the historian, Niall Ferguson. Vance accused him of “moralistic garbage”, “historical illiteracy” and – worst of all – of being a “globalist”. And if that was not enough, Vance even chose to have a go at the *** prime minister in the Oval Office himself earlier this week. Out of nowhere, he told Sir Keir Starmer that “there have been infringements on free speech that actually affect not just the British – of course what the British do in their own country is up to them – but also affect American technology companies and, by extension, American citizens”. The prime minister pushed back firmly, saying “in relation to free speech in the ***, I’m very proud of our history there… We’ve had free speech for a very, very long time in the United Kingdom and it will last for a very, very long time”. This was an echo of the criticism Vance made in Munich, railing against European regulations on artificial intelligence and social media platforms. The aim is to tackle disinformation and hate speech that can foment unrest and radicalise people. Vance sees it as a threat to political fellow travellers and US commercial interests, especially in big tech. Several questions present themselves. Was Vance’s attack on Zelensky premeditated, as some diplomats believe? White House sources have told US papers it was not. Is Vance’s new role emerging at Trump’s behest, sharing the load with Elon Musk to dish out punishment to the president’s opponents? Or is Vance freelancing, already sketching out a role that will form the basis of an election campaign in three years’ time when Trump will not be able to stand again?
