  1. How Zelensky’s lack of a suit may have fuelled Oval Office spat How Zelensky’s lack of a suit may have fuelled Oval Office spat Watch in full: The remarkable exchange between Zelensky, Vance and Trump It was the first thing President Donald Trump said when Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky stepped out of his car at the White House on Friday. “You’re all dressed up today,” Trump said as he greeted him, referring to Zelensky’s military-style ****** sweatshirt, adorned with the Ukrainian trident. Zelensky has eschewed suits, button-down shirts and ties – even during important meetings with world leaders – since the start of the full-scale Russian invasion of his country began in 2022. The former comedian has said his attire choice is an act of solidarity with soldiers. His casual dress sense has long been an irritant for critics of US aid to Ukraine, and after years becoming a conservative talking point, the issue came to global attention in a spectacular way during the now infamous Oval Office meeting as Zelensky squared off with Trump and US Vice-President JD Vance. A question to Zelensky from a US reporter accused him of disrespecting the occasion by not wearing a suit and this immediately changed the atmosphere in the room, according to BBC reporters present. And a short time later, larger issues of respect and gratitude fuelled the extraordinary argument between Zelensky, Trump and Vance. When the meeting was opened up to questions from reporters, one came from Brian Glenn, chief White House correspondent for conservative cable network Real America’s Voice. “Why don’t you wear a suit?” Glenn asked. “You’re at the highest level in this country’s office, and you refuse to wear a suit. “Do you own a suit?” he continued. “A lot of Americans have problems with you not respecting the dignity of this office.” BBC reporters in the Oval Office at the time noted that the question was the moment where the Ukrainian president – who until then seemed to be having a diplomatic, even friendly, conversation with Trump – first appeared tired and irritated. “I will wear costume after this war will finish,” Zelensky replied. (The word “suit” can be translated into Ukrainian as “kostyum”.) The Ukrainian president then made a verbal jab at the reporter. “Maybe something like yours, yes. Maybe something better, I don’t know,” he said, to laughter in the room. “Maybe something cheaper.” Glenn’s question gave voice to a longstanding gripe in the world of Maga politics, where some argue that the Ukrainian leader does not seem to be showing enough gratitude or respect to the US. A former local TV reporter in Dallas who became better known in conservative circles for his work at another pro-Trump channel, Right Side Broadcasting Network, Glenn is an unabashed Trump fan. Last year he told Politico that he is “100 percent behind President Trump and the America First agenda.” He is also reportedly dating Marjorie Taylor Greene, the Georgia congresswoman who is one of Trump’s most outspoken fans. Getty Images Glenn and Greene pictured in Washington last year Real America’s Voice, which was founded in 2020, is a relatively obscure right-wing cable news outlet, one of several pro-Trump channels that have cropped up in recent years. Its guests and hosts have spread conspiracy theories about a variety of subjects, including the 2020 presidential election, the 2021 Capitol riot and QAnon. Its show line-up includes some big names from the Maga world, including Trump’s former chief advisor Steve Bannon, classic rocker turned political activist Ted Nugent and Charlie Kirk, the founder of the conservative Turning Point group. The BBC contacted the network for comment. After the Oval Office spat, Glenn posted online that he had “extreme empathy for the people of Ukraine” but alleged that Zelensky’s lack of a suit demonstrated “his inner disrespect” for the US. Zelensky’s defenders online posted pictures of Winston Churchill wearing casual clothes during World War Two. Pictures from the ******* show the British leader wearing jumpsuit-like clothes to a meeting with then-US President Franklin Roosevelt, and he also wore military uniforms and suits during conflabs with world leaders. Central Press/Hulton Archive/Getty Images Churchill wore a one-piece suit – which he called a ‘siren suit’ after the warning horns which signalled a ******* air raid – to the White House in the midst of the Second World War After Glenn’s question, the news conference swiftly moved on, to a query about whether the US would send more arms to Ukraine. At the end of an answer Trump referred back to the suit question. “I do like your clothing,” he quipped, and pointing to Zelensky he said, “I think he’s dressed beautifully.” Behind the scenes, Trump’s attitude may have been slightly different, according to reports. US news outlet Axios reported that before the meeting, White House staffers had requested that Zelensky wear a suit and were offended when he did not. However, the two world leaders continued taking questions, more or less cordially, for nearly another 20 minutes before the extraordinary argument broke out, after an interruption by the US vice-president, JD Vance. Vance repeatedly brought up “respect” – referring to Zelensky as “Mr President” as the Ukrainian leader called him “JD” – and said: “I think it’s disrespectful for you to come into the Oval Office and try to litigate this in front of the American media right now”. The discussion went downhill from there. A suit-less Zelensky was soon ejected from the White House, as relations between the two countries reached a new wartime low. Lithuanian ocean rower in trouble off eastern Australia Lithuanian ocean rower in trouble off eastern Australia A Royal *********** Navy ship is bound for the Coral Sea after a Lithuanian man rowing from San Diego to Brisbane got into trouble. Aurimas Mockus activated his emergency beacon on Friday night about 740km east of Mackay, Queensland, and 90km west of Tropical Cyclone Alfred. He is travelling solo on the rowing boat from the Californian city to Brisbane and was battling winds of 80km/h and heavy seas when he called for help, the *********** Maritime Safety Authority said. A Cairns-based Challenger jet didn’t spot the vessel on Saturday but managed to make contact with Mr Mockus, who said he was tired. An aircraft was sent from Royal *********** Air Force Base Edinburgh near Adelaide and another will be dispatched on Sunday to maintain communications. HMAS Choules, a 16,000-tonne navy landing ship, is en route from Brisbane into the Coral Sea to assist. “Further information on the condition of the rower and his boat will be sought from him today,” an AMSA spokesperson said. Weather conditions have eased near the Coral Sea but it’s still within the influence of the cyclone, which was about 510km east of Rockhampton on Sunday morning. The category two cyclone is forecast to move south, roughly parallel to the coastline, on Sunday before weakening slightly and moving to the southeast on Monday. It’s then expected to slow and turn west from Tuesday, travelling back towards the southern Queensland coast. The Bureau of Meteorology says strong to gale-force winds may impact K’gari, also known as Fraser Island, on Sunday. 3. Woman who removed U.S. flag at Hart Park rearrested Woman who removed U.S. flag at Hart Park rearrested BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — Crystal Aguilar, who missed a court hearing last week on charges she removed the U.S. flag at Hart Park and threatened park rangers, has been rearrested, according to inmate booking records. Aguilar, 24, was arrested Wednesday afternoon on College Avenue and had a hearing scheduled Friday. Her preliminary hearing is set for March 13. Records show her bail is set at $20,000. Aguilar posted bail following her initial arrest earlier this month. She then failed to show at a hearing on Feb. 21, and a warrant was issued for her arrest. She’s charged with felony resisting arrest and four misdemeanors: two counts of resisting arrest, vandalism and battery on a peace officer. Around 9:30 a.m. on Feb. 6, park rangers encountered Aguilar after being sent to Hart Park over reports of someone trying to steal the U.S. flag at the entrance. Aguilar had removed the U.S. flag and raised the ******** flag in its place, according to sheriff’s officials. The sheriff’s office released an edited video on YouTube that captured a portion of the incident and her arrest, during which she makes threats to kill rangers and their families. In an interview with 17 News, Aguilar apologized for her behavior but said she had to take action to bring attention to the Trump administration’s plans for mass deportations. 5. Coalition pledges $3bn to bolster F-35 fleet amid ‘dangerous strategice circumstances’ Coalition pledges $3bn to bolster F-35 fleet amid ‘dangerous strategice circumstances’ The Coalition has pledged $3bn toward acquiring another 28 F-35A Lightning IIs if it wins the upcoming federal election. The vow would push Australia’s fleet of F-35s to 100 and reverse Labor’s decision not to go ahead with a fourth squadron of the joint strike fighters. Spruiking the announcement on Sunday, opposition defence spokesman Andrew Hastie said Australia was facing “dangerous strategic circumstances”. Camera IconThe Coalition has pledged $3bn toward acquiring another 28 F-35A Lightning IIs if it wins the upcoming federal election. Evan Morgan Credit: News Corp Australia “Morale is at an all time low,” the veteran told Sky News. “We have a recruiting crisis, we have a retention crisis, we have a readiness crisis. “And this is a signal from Peter Dutton and the coalition that we care about defence. “We want a strong country, and given today’s dangerous strategic circumstances, we are investing in it so that we can secure the *********** people and our interests.” Mr Hastie did not clarify whether the $3bn would cover everything but said the $3bn would “secure that fourth squadron”. Camera IconOpposition defence spokesman Andrew Hastie says Australia is facing ‘dangerous strategic circumstances’. NewsWire / Gary Ramage Credit: News Corp Australia He also held back revealing where the funds would come from, saying the Coalition would “make all that clear when we release our costings prior to the election”. Earlier, Treasurer Jim Chalmers commented on the opposition’s defence pitch. He said the F-35s were “a very important piece of kit” but called on Opposition Leader Peter Dutton to reveal where the Coalition planned on pulling the cash from. “This is the same guy who hasn’t signed up to the $50bn in extra investment that we have found in a responsible budget to invest in our capability in defence,” he told Sky News. “So he should tell us where this $3bn is coming from. “He hasn’t been able to do that. I don’t think he’s thought through what it means for the personnel part of the story, the broader costs of this, beyond the planes themselves.” Camera IconTreasurer Jim Chalmers has called on the Coalition to reveal where it will pull the $3bn from to buy the F-35s NewsWire / Martin Ollman Credit: News Corp Australia He noted the Albanese government had delivered the 72 F-35s. It did not proceed with the fourth squadron because the fleet of F/A-18F Super Hornets were going to be in service longer than planned. Labor has boosted defence spending by about 20 per cent since the 2023 fiscal year. It has been pumping tens of billions into broadening Australia’s strike and defence capabilities, including more investment in AUKUS. Among the government’s defence policies is the Guided Weapons and Explosive Ordnance, which aims to massively expand the country’s missile arsenal and build up the domestic defence manufacturing base against a backdrop of a major war forecast by 2034. 6. Air Canada sues passenger who spent thousands on clothes while his luggage was missing — so who is in the right? Air Canada sues passenger who spent thousands on clothes while his luggage was missing — so who is in the right? These purchases aren’t flying under the radar. When Alaa Tannous and his wife Nancy flew with Air Canada in 2022, the airline lost their checked luggage. According to The Street, the luggage was returned to the Toronto couple less than 24 hours later, but Tannous sought compensation for purchases he made while the baggage was missing, totaling thousands of dollars. After being ordered to pay passengers for items to replace their delayed luggage, Air Canada is appealing the decision. Chalabala – stock.adobe.com Although Air Canada rejected Tannous’ claim, the ********* Transportation Agency ordered the airline to pay Tannous $2,079 CDN, ($1,440 USD). However, Air Canada is now suing Tannous, taking him to Federal Court in an attempt to overturn the CTA’s decision. “It was shocking,” Tannous told CBC, adding that he felt that his ask was “fair.” “It’s disappointing to see the airline, after all the money I spent with them over the years [is…] appealing a $2,000 claim.” Air Canada appealed the regulators’ decision to pay the couple for the expenses incurred as a result of delayed luggage. REUTERS Initially, Tannous asked for $3,435 CDN (approximately $2,382 USD) from the airline, which it rejected and instead offered a meager $250 in compensation to cover necessary costs, a solution that did not satisfy Tannous. In court documents obtained by CBC, Air Canada claimed that Tannous submitted expenses that the airline considered unreasonable for lacking luggage for less than a day. A statement from Air Canada posted to LinkedIn claimed that Tannous’ luggage was delivered to the couple’s Vancouver hotel on May 26, 2022 at 9:15 a.m. local time — less than 24 hours after the travelers touched down in the city. In the statement, the airline claimed that Tannous spent $570.12 CDN on toiletries, skincare and makeup; $1,121.86 CDN for two pairs of pants, three shirts and a single dress that cost $348.84 CDN; $247.52 CDN on four sets of lingerie and sleepwear; and $525.50 CDN for underwear, jeans and two tees. The couple was reunited with their luggage less than 24 hours after landing in Vancouver, Air Canada claimed. Thomas Heitz – stock.adobe.com After the bags were delivered, Air Canada claimed Tannous spent and attempted to expense $433.61 on women’s sneakers and $1,310.40 for a custom monogrammed Tumi suitcase. According to CBC, Tannous claimed that he and his wife left the hotel in the morning before the baggage arrived without notice. He also said that the suitcase was meant to bring the replacement purchases back home, but that the amount CTA ordered Air Canada to pay was not enough to cover the new luggage. While the awarded amount was enough to cover just the necessities, Tannous also claimed that, at the time, an Air Canada employee informed them they could expense “a reasonable amount” to replace the missing items. “They couldn’t even track the luggage, if it’s in Toronto or, like, on the way,” Tannous said. “I was under the impression, luggage is gone.” Tannous said he was “under the impression” that his luggage was gone for good. asiandelight – stock.adobe.com According to Air Canada guidelines, the airline vows it will reimburse travelers “for reasonable expenses” for “rentals or essential items,” such as clothing, toiletries or sports equipment rentals, so long as they are verified with receipts. CBC reported that the maximum the airline could shell out for lost or delayed baggage is an estimated $2,400. Air Canada, however, is now claiming that Tannous did not adequately justify the purchases. “I believed in the system, which is my mistake,” he said, calling the situation “unacceptable.” “It has to be changed.” Source link #Air #Canada #sues #passenger #spent #thousands #clothes #luggage #missing Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content] For verified travel tips and real support, visit: [Hidden Content]

  11. The Substance: Demi Moore’s first Oscar could come from wrestling her own insecurities in gory body-horror The Substance: Demi Moore’s first Oscar could come from wrestling her own insecurities in gory body-horror Demi Moore is the star of one of the goriest, most audacious films ever nominated for an Oscar, the feminist body-horror satire The Substance. Onscreen, Moore, 62, dissolves and mutates in often grisly ways — nude, and in extreme close-up. And she could not be more self-actualised about it. The role required “wrestling with the flashes of my own insecurity and ego,” Moore explains. “I was being asked to share those things that I don’t necessarily want people to see.” She was speaking in a video interview last month, dressed in casual ****** and big glasses, twisting and tucking her legs under her, on her office couch, with every thought. Filming through that discomfort was a “gift — silver lining, blessing, whatever you want to call it,” she continues. “Once you put it all out there, what else is there? There’s nothing to hide. Being able to let go was another layer of liberation for me.” The next night, she won the Critics Choice prize for best actress. Her career and cultural resurgence is overdue, says Ryan Murphy, the showrunner and a friend who at long last persuaded her to work with him in last year’s Feud: Capote vs. The Swans. She had the beauty and aura of an old-school movie star, he says, with the professional discipline to match, but the flexibility of a seeker: “Game to do anything”. “She’s a pathfinder,” Murphy says. “We all talk about what she’s done for the business and for other women.” And, he adds, “she is one of the most emotionally intelligent people that you’ll ever meet. Whenever I have an emotional dilemma or I need advice, I do not go to my shrink — I go to her.” Camera IconDemi Moore. Credit: RYAN PFLUGER/NYT With The Substance, Moore is the Oscars’ best actress front-runner, too, for playing Elisabeth Sparkle, a one-time A-lister turned TV fitness instructor who is unscrupulously put out to pasture for the Hollywood sin of existing past age 50. Her desperate solution is to inject herself with the mysterious concoction of the movie’s title, and birth — through a gaping wound in her spine — a more youthful self, named Sue (Margaret Qualley). They’re supposed to switch weekly, while the other vegetates. But in the battle for nubile flesh — and thus popularity — Elisabeth loses, grotesquely so. Camera IconDemi Moore in The Substance. Credit: Supplied The Substance is a bit of a genre-buster: Moore has described the project as a cross between Oscar Wilde’s classic, The Picture Of Dorian Gray; the 1992 ****** comedy Death Becomes Her; and a Jane Fonda workout video. It’s vying for best picture as well, and French filmmaker Coralie Fargeat was nominated for directing and for her script. It’s mostly sparked conversation for its none-too-subtle message. But Moore’s singular performance — which also draws on her real-life past as a sex symbol whose form was both worshipped and castigated — is not just metaphor. It is enthrallingly physical, a feat of wordless emotional range: she has comparatively little dialogue; is hardly onscreen with a co-star (at least when both are conscious); and communicates mostly through tight shots, often gazing at her own reflection — “which is really not the most comfortable place to be,” Moore says. “We look for what’s wrong.” Camera IconDemi Moore in The Substance. Credit: Christine Tamalet/Working Title/Christine Tamalet/Working Title The prosthetics that turn her into a wizened creature “were their own mixed bag of tricks,” she adds, and “figuring out the logic and the rules, because it’s also a world that doesn’t exist. Like, OK, I’m in this totally aged, degraded body, but I can haul **** down a hallway.” Until its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in May, she adds, she wasn’t even sure the movie would work (it wound up winning best screenplay). And she was immediately indelible, in unexpected ways: Moore’s husky voice is one of her trademarks. “I was astonished at how powerful she was in silence,” Murphy says. Camera IconDemi Moore in The Substance. Credit: Supplied In an email, Qualley gushes about her co-star. “Demi is the magic blend of deep consideration and the ability to courageously live in the present,” she writes. She learned something every day; their collaboration was “one of the great gifts of my life,” Qualley adds. The production, which stretched over 5 ½ months in France, was also among the most strenuous of Moore’s 40-year career, she says. G.I. Jane, the 1997 Ridley Scott action drama in which she buffed up to play a Navy SEAL-esque recruit, “was physically very challenging,” Moore remembers, “but it was very straightforward”. Camera IconDemi Moore in a scene from the 1997 film, G.I. Jane. Credit: Supplied “This was emotionally and physically draining every day — every day,” she says. “Even the simplest scenes.” And yet it was the leap she sought, after stepping back from acting intermittently over the years: first, soon after her 90s heyday, to raise the three daughters she shares with Bruce Willis, her ex-husband; and then to take stock of herself. One thing that emerged from this *******, alongside a renewed focus on sobriety, was her unflinching, bestselling 2019 memoir, Inside Out. In it, among many other traumas, she details the disordered eating and overexercising she engaged in for years — she once put a lock on her refrigerator — and how she emerged with a far less fractured sense of self. The Substance role was not handed to Moore; Fargeat considered other actors and it took a half-dozen meetings between the two to finalise the casting. In one of those encounters, Moore shared a copy of her book (written with Ariel Levy, of The New Yorker). It was a plain-on-the-page vehicle, Moore says, to show how much Fargeat’s story resonated with her — and, she adds, “not from a place of the wound, but from the place that actually had healing.” Moore was not interested in litigating blame. “Look, women being marginalised at a certain age, particularly in the entertainment industry, is the least-new information of the entire movie,” she says. Neither was she only highlighting what she calls “that painful state that I think we’ve all experienced, because we’re human, which is of compare and despair.” What drew her to the screenplay was the way those impulses were turned inward, violently. “Because I can look and say there is nothing that anyone else has done to me, that is worse than what I have done to myself.” Camera IconDemi Moore. Credit: Ryan Pfluger/NYT There were vast gulfs between her and the lonesome, career-obsessed Elisabeth, she says. But, she adds: “Emotionally, it wasn’t that big of a reach. I really did understand her.” Moore escaped — or persevered through — a turbulent, peripatetic childhood, striking out on her own at 16. She was a soap opera regular by 19, then made her name on the Brat Pack movies like St. Elmo’s Fire, and became a superstar with a string of 90s hits including Ghost, A Few Good Men and Indecent Proposal. Earning a $US12.5 million ($19.6m) paycheck for Striptease, in 1996, made her the highest-paid actress in the world, but did not engender good will. (She acquired the sneering nickname Gimme Moore; Willis, who then made even ******* bank as an action hero, got no such derision.) Camera IconThe Vanity Fair magazine cover from August 1991, depicting a pregnant Demi Moore, which was voted the second best magazine cover from the last 40 years, as decided by judges in a contest by the American Society of Magazine Editors, in 2005. Credit: BW SH**NY**/(AP Photo/Magazine Publishers Assn and American Society of Magazine Editors) Another flashpoint came with her 1991 Vanity Fair cover, photographed by Annie Leibovitz. Moore was seven months pregnant with her second daughter and Leibovitz snapped a shot of her, bejewelled and naked, ostensibly as an end-of-day family photo. Long before celebrities gleefully bared their bumps, Moore’s elegant flaunt remains one of her proudest achievements, she said in her memoir. “It helped move the needle culturally, whether I intended it to or not,” Moore wrote. “To help women love themselves and their natural shapes, that’s a remarkable and gratifying thing to have accomplished, particularly for someone like me who spent years doing battle with her body.” The idea that she bared her skin — in movies or elsewhere — out of confidence is a long-held public misperception, she says. “I was so uncomfortable,” she admits. “I was trying to just find ways of overcoming it.” These days, Moore is trying to absorb the critical and industry adulation for The Substance, without weighing it too heavily. “Whatever happens, I just keep focusing on remembering not to make it mean too much, but also not to make it mean too little,” she says. “But I can enjoy all of it.” She seemed to turbocharge her Oscar campaign with her win at the Golden Globes last month. (She had been nominated before, but never won.) In her stunned speech, she mentioned a producer who negated her as “a popcorn actress,” and also repeated some wisdom from a woman she met decades ago, who told her blankly that she would never be good enough — “but you could know the value of your worth, if you put down the measuring stick”. “It just hit me so deeply,” Moore says, as she nuzzles her 450g micro Chihuahua, Pilaf, the most favoured of her six mini dogs. (Don’t fret: “They all have it pretty good”. They all sleep in her bed; they travel; a timid dachshund was on his way to meet with a trainer for a confidence boost. “Literally everything is built around these silly dogs,” she says.) Camera IconActress Demi Moore pictured with her chihuahua, Pilaf. Credit: Ryan Pfluger/NYT The Globes also introduced a factoid about Moore, that she is “an avid doll collector,” with a separate residence “for her 2000+ vintage dolls”. In her book, she says she started amassing toys when her children were young, to make up for what she missed in her own childhood. Her assemblage extends beyond just figurines — she has miniatures and oversize pieces, quilts and oddities. “I am a curiosity collector,” she says. Imperfections, she has learned, are worth noticing. “Not that I like being scared and vulnerable,” Moore says, “but I know it’s a rich place to be. And that I always am better on the other side.” The Academy Awards is on March 3. Special coverage on Seven from 10.30am AEST/7.30am AWST and via a live steam on 7plus. 12. Mardi Gras parade takes over St. Louis Mardi Gras parade takes over St. Louis ST. LOUIS – The month of March starts with a Mardi-Party for St. Louis! Thousands gathered Saturday to celebrate the return of the city’s annual Mardi Gras parade. Branded as the Bud Light Grand Parade, the event is a dazzling show that makes way from Downtown St. Louis to the Soulard neighborhood along Broadway. Stretching several miles, the parade featured dozens of group entries. Visitors had the chance to see spirited floats, marching bands and performers. Participants threw out plenty of beads, candy, and other goodies for families to enjoy. This year’s Mardi Gras parade marked the 45th in St. Louis history. It’s the headliner of a five-week-long celebration in Soulard leading up to “**** Tuesday,” the Mardi Gras observance that is recognized on March 4 this year. Soulard’s Mardi Gras festivities generate around $20 million each year for the local economy. Nearly one-quarter of parade visitors come from out of town, helping with the annual contribution. While the origins of Mardi Gras stem from New Orleans, St. Louis also has some deep-rooted connections. Back in the 1790s, one southern area of St. Louis City was run by an upper Louisiana surveyor named Antoine Soulard. The neighborhood later embraced his namesake and began hosting Mardi Gras celebrations more than 200 years later. Check out dozens of photos from Saturday’s parade above in the photo slideshow. A portion of North Gene Autry Trail, North Indian Canyon Drive and East Vista Chino in Palm Springs were closed on Saturday due to low visibility. The Palm Springs Police Department issued a road closure alert at 1:53 p.m. for East Vista Chino at the wash between Clubhouse View Drive and city limits due to low visibility. The Palm Springs Police Department issued an alert at 8:49 a.m. Saturday advising that North Gene Autry Trail at the wash between Salvia Road and East Via Escuela is closed due to low visibility. Nearly an hour later, the Palm Springs Police Department issued an alert that North Indian Canyon Road at the wash is closed between Sunrise Parkway and Palm Springs Station Road due to low visibility. There was no information as to when the roads are expected to reopen. The closure comes as the Coachella Valley is under an air quality alert due to harmful levels of particle pollution from wind-blown dust through Sunday morning, the National Weather Service San Diego said. 17. Samsung’s midrange Galaxy A56 has AI photo editing and a bump for its buttons Samsung’s midrange Galaxy A56 has AI photo editing and a bump for its buttons While I naively hoped to see the Galaxy S25 Edge ahead of MWC, that wasn’t what I saw last week at Samsung’s pre-show briefing. However, what I did see might intrigue many of you: a cheaper slice of Galaxy hardware in the form of the Galaxy A56. It will be available later this year, starting at $499 (or £499 in the ***), which is slightly cheaper than the Pixel 8a when it first appeared. Samsung also announced the Galaxy A36 and A26 today, and they’ll start at $399 and $299 respectively. Many of the A series upgrades this year match what we saw from the S25. The A56 is thinner than its predecessor, down to 7.4mm from 8.2mm, while packing a marginally ******* 6.7-inch screen. The bezels, which were usually one of the most prominent visual tells of an A series, have been shaved the device’s bezels down further on the A56, too. Photo by Mat Smith for Engadget. The hardware has been tweaked, with a brushed metal frame and a minor design twist: a new slightly protruding bump on the side where the volume and power buttons sit. When I got to handle the A56 briefly, I liked this. Asymmetry aside, it was easier to handle, which was surprising since this was a 6.7-inch device, and I’m more used to 6.3-inch phones. The A56 felt less unwieldy. (Did Samsung’s designers read my unhinged editorial on the sides of phones and decide to muddy the waters further? Perhaps.) It’s a mixed bag on camera specs this year. The front of the A56 now has a lower-res 12-megapixel selfie camera, while on the back sits an upgraded 12MP ultrawide, 50MP main sensor with an f/1.8 lens and optical image stabilization. There’s still a 5MP macro lens for someone out there. Those new cameras feature many of the latest upgrades on the S25 family, including improved image signal processing for better low-light performance, as well as a raft of AI features, including enhanced subject detection in portrait mode. Samsung says the A56 will better recognize sky, skin, faces, hair and grass for improved bokeh effects. Regarding AI-powered image editing, there’s also Object Eraser, auto trim for videos and Create Filter, where you can choose an existing image and apply its color and tone to a different photo. You’ll also get Best Face, which lets you pick from multiple captures for everyone’s best expression, as long as you have motion photos enabled. These aren’t new features on smartphones, but their addition brings the midrange A56 closer to the Galaxy S25. Through One UI 7, the A56 gets style flourishes and home screen improvements like the Now bar, notification panel changes and scalable widgets in different shapes and sizes. Samsung also promises six generations of OS updates (up from four on last year’s A55) and six years of security updates. Photo by Mat Smith for Engadget. As you can tell by now, there aren’t any surprises here. The 5,000mAh battery is the same size as the A55’s, although the charging speed is now 45W. The company says you can charge the device fully in just over an hour. Samsung has swapped to its own 4nm Exynos 1580 chip, too, with CPU boosts of around 18 percent. The hardware, once again, inches closer to the quality and premium feel of what we typically see on Galaxy S devices. It’s peak midrange phone season. The Galaxy A56 goes up against the recently launched iPhone 16e, while rumors suggest Google’s Pixel 9a could break cover very soon. The Galaxy A36 and Galaxy A26 Samsung also announced the Galaxy A36 5G and Galaxy A26 5G today, which both have 6.7-inch screens that get as bright as 1,200 nits and refresh at up to 120Hz. They come with One UI 7 as well, including features like Circle To Search that previously launched on pricier phones. Plus, they also feature triple camera systems on the rear with a 50MP main sensor, though their ultrawide setup camera is not as sharp as the A56 at 8MP. Some of the software features, like Best Face, are also reserved for the A56, though you’ll still find the updated Object Eraser and Filters on the pair of cheaper handsets. Finally, though the A36 and A26 have the same IP67 rating and 5,000mAh battery as the A56, they’ll only pack 6GB of RAM and the A36 uses the Snapdragon 6 Gen 3 processor instead of the Exynos 1580 in the A56. Galaxy A56 price and availability In the ***, the Galaxy A56 will go on preorder on March 2nd and launch on March 19th. It’ll come in four “awesome” (Samsung’s wording) colors, Graphite, Olive, Pink and Light Grey. Because nothing screams awesome like a lighter shade of grey. While we do have US pricing, Samsung hasn’t shared more precise timing for availability than “later this year.” Source link #Samsungs #midrange #Galaxy #A56 #photo #editing #bump #buttons Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

US President Donald Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance used that original meeting to take Mr Zelensky to task, accusing him of being ungrateful for America’s support and uninterested in cutting a deal that would end the war. Mr Zelensky left the White House early, cancelling a planned minerals deal that was expected to be signed between the two countries. He flew straight to Britain, where the reception from the *** Prime Minister was considerably more warm. Sir Keir welcomed Mr Zelensky with a hug in front of cameras outside No. 10 before the two countries agreed to the $3.7b (€2.26) loan deal. The money will be used for weapons production in Ukraine, according to a statement Mr Zelensky made on X. “This loan will enhance Ukraine’s defense capabilities and will be repaid using revenues from frozen Russian assets,” he said. We are happy to have such strategic partners and to share the same vision of what a secure future should look like for all.” A Downing Street spokesperson told the BBC that Sir Keir had reiterated his support for Ukraine and that “the *** wioll always stand with them, for as long as it takes”. “The Prime Minister restated his determination to finding a path that ends Russia’s ******** war and ensures a just and lasting peace that secures Ukraine’s future sovereignty and security,” the spokesperson said. “The leaders looked forward to continuing these discussions at tomorrow’s leaders’ summit in London.” The meeting follows global outrage over what some analysts are calling an ambush in front of the world’s media at the White House on Friday (local time). Mr Zelensky arrived in London to shouts of support from people who had gathered outside of 10 Downing Street, where Sir Keir gave him a hug and ushered him inside. “And as you heard from the cheers on the street outside, you have full backing across the United Kingdom,” Sir Keir told the leader of the war-torn country. “We stand with you, with Ukraine, for as long as it may take.” Mr Zelensky thanked him and the people of the *** for their support and friendship. The Ukrainian President had been scheduled to meet with the *** Prime Minisyter on Sunday before a summit with other European leaders to discuss Ukraine and shoring up defences across the continent. But the timetable for their bilateral meeting was apparently sped up in the aftermath of the US visit. Despite the US talks ending in acrimony, Mr Zelensky struck a conciliatory tone in a series of posts on X after arriving in the ***. Ukraine was “very grateful to the United States for all the support,” he said. “I’m thankful to President Trump, Congress for their bipartisan support, and American people. “It’s crucial for us to have President Trump’s support. He wants to end the war, but no one wants peace more than we do. “We are the ones living this war in Ukraine. “It’s a fight for our freedom, for our very survival.” The summit on Sunday in London will include leaders from France, Germany, Denmark, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Spain, Turkey, Finland, Sweden, the Czech Republic and Romania, as well as the NATO secretary-general and the presidents of the European Commission and European Council. Mr Zelensky will also meet with King Charles on Sunday before the summit that is being held at Lancaster House, a 200-year-old mansion near Buckingham Palace. — With Reuters Source link #Grateful #Ukrainian #President #Volodymyr #Zelensky #praises #Keir #Starmer #ugly #White #House #spat Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content] For verified travel tips and real support, visit: [Hidden Content]

  20. Air taxi developers await FAA certification Air taxi developers await FAA certification This story was originally published on Smart Cities Dive. To receive daily news and insights, subscribe to our free daily Smart Cities Dive newsletter. The first passenger-carrying flights for two U.S.-based air taxi developers, Joby Aviation and Archer Aviation, are likely to be in the Middle East later this year, the companies said on earnings calls this week. Joby plans to launch in Dubai while Archer signed Abu Dhabi Aviation as its first launch partner. Neither aircraft manufacturer has completed the final phase of the Federal Aviation Administration’s type certification process, which is the approval of the aircraft’s design and components. According to Archer Aviation Founder and CEO Adam Goldstein, the FAA’s concerns center around how the industry deals with emergency landing for these kinds of aircraft. However, Goldstein sees promise in the Trump administration’s support for air taxi development. “I’m confident that the new administration is going to help us speed up things to ensure that we drive results,” he said on the company’s Feb. 27 investor call. He added that “the Secretary of Transportation has been very supportive and is working with us closely to try to figure out how to continue to advance the certification process.” Goldstein said that Archer continues to work with its U.S. partners, United Airlines and Southwest Airlines, to plan initial operations in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Miami and New York City. Those efforts include route planning, recruiting and training pilots, and integrating Archer’s aerial ride-sharing software into the airlines’ reservation software, he said. Joby is also making progress to bring its commercial air taxi service to U.S. cities. “Over the last quarter, we’ve worked closely with Delta [Air Lines] and Uber to showcase our product, and we continue to make important inroads across key U.S. markets such as New York and L.A.,” Joby Aviation Founder and CEO JoeBen Bevirt said on the company’s Feb. 26 earnings call. While the first air taxis these two companies are developing are battery-electric powered, both Archer and Joby also are developing other power propulsion technologies. Bevirt said on the call that they flew a hydrogen-electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft for 561 miles in July. Battery-powered air taxis are limited to a much shorter range, typically about 100 miles. Archer’s Goldstein said the company is also developing a hybrid propulsion aircraft in a partnership with Anduril Industries, a defense technology company, for military defense use. But these longer-range VTOL aircraft may also have civilian uses, he said.
