  2. PSG warm up for Liverpool task with easy Ligue 1 win PSG warm up for Liverpool task with easy Ligue 1 win Paris Saint-Germain have warmed up for Liverpool with a 4-1 win over Lille as they consolidated their runaway French league lead. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia watched the goals from the substitutes’ bench as PSG coach Luis Enrique rested the Georgia star ahead of Liverpool’s visit in the Champions League. Paris host the Premier League leaders for the first leg of their last-16 meeting on Wednesday. Lille, who had been fourth ahead of the 24th round in Ligue 1, had pushed for Saturday’s game to be postponed because of their own Champions League match at Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday. PSG showed no sympathy. Bradley Barcola opened the scoring in the sixth minute after Lille goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier saved Ousmane Dembele’s initial effort. Chevalier went on to make a string of saves as PSG made a furious start but he couldn’t stop Marquinhos from heading in the home team’s second in the 22nd. Dembele was left free on the right to grab the third six minutes later – his 18th of the season – and the 19-year-old Desire Doue made it 4-0 in the 37th with a brilliant strike to the top left corner. Lille failed to have a single effort at goal in the first half and they made two changes at the break, sending on Icelandic midfielder Hakon Haraldsson and 18-year-old midfielder Ethan Mbappe, Kylian Mbappe’s younger brother. Canada forward Jonathan David, a second-half substitute, scored Lille’s consolation in the 80th on a rebound after Gianluigi Donnarumma saved Mbappe’s shot. PSG (62) moved 16 points clear of Marseille with their 10th straight win across all competitions. Marseille host Nantes on Sunday. Earlier on Saturday, Nice stayed third with a 3-1 win at Saint-Etienne, and relegation-threatened Le Havre grabbed a 4-3 win at Lens thanks to a penalty from Egyptian forward Kouka, slotted past Socceroos goalkeeper Mat Ryan, in added time. Herb Peterson is responsible for the creation of the McDonald’s Egg McMuffin. Peterson was a McDonald’s franchisee in Santa Barbara, California. “When I watched my father introduce this idea to Ray Kroc, we could not have anticipated it would become the foundation for the renowned McDonald’s breakfast menu,” David Peterson, Herb’s son and McDonald’s owner and operator, said in a news release. “It’s been remarkable to see people embrace this innovation over the last five decades, and now we get to share that heritage with a new generation of breakfast fans.” How many calories does the Egg McMuffin have? 7. Zelenskyy seeks support at emergency European summit after bruising Trump encounter Zelenskyy seeks support at emergency European summit after bruising Trump encounter LONDON — Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Saturday as European leaders grapple with the fallout from an extraordinary on-air exchange in which the Ukrainian president was loudly berated by Donald Trump. Ahead of the meeting, Starmer told Zelenskyy, “We stand with you, with Ukraine, for as long as it may take. And I hope you’ve heard some of that cheering in the street that is the people of the United Kingdom coming out to demonstrate how much they support you, how much they support Ukraine and our absolute determination to stand with you.” “I want to thank you, the people of the United Kingdom, such big support from the very beginning of this war,” Zelenskyy told Starmer. “We’re really really happy that we have such partners and such friends,” the Ukrainian president added, saying that he’d also accepted an invitation to meet with King Charles on Sunday. Zelenskyy was seen leaving 10 Downing Street with Starmer on Saturday evening after their meeting ended. Starmer went back inside, while Zelenskyy got into a car. Neither made a statement to the media. European leaders are set to meet on Sunday at an emergency summit to discuss Russia and a peace plan for Ukraine. Britain’s Starmer and President Emmanuel Macron of France have led efforts to convince Trump to continue supporting Ukraine, which was invaded by Russia three years ago. The spat in the Oval Office in front of the media has called into question whether that support will continue, and if the United States will proceed with a dramatic rapprochement with Russia’s Vladimir Putin. Most European countries came out in support of Ukraine, breaking with Washington as differences in the trans-Atlantic alliance built over the past 80 years burst into public view. “Today it became clear that the free world needs a new leader. It’s up to us, Europeans, to take this challenge,” European Union foreign minister Kaja Kallas said. Friday’s meeting was meant to jump-start talks on a deal over Ukraine’s critical minerals, but degenerated into confrontation, with Trump and Vice President JD Vance criticizing Zelenskyy and telling him he wasn’t grateful enough. European leaders quickly lined up to support the Ukrainian leader. Zelenskyy’s “dignity honors the bravery of the Ukrainian people,” European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen posted on X. “Be strong, be brave, be fearless. You are never alone, dear President Zelenskyy. We will continue working with you for a just and lasting peace.” “We must never confuse aggressor and victim in this terrible war,” wrote Friedrich Merz, the likely next leader of Germany. Macron said it was essential to respect the Ukrainians “fighting for their dignity, their independence, for their children and for the security of Europe.” Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., who has called on Ukraine’s president to resign in the aftermath of the tense Oval Office meeting, slammed European leaders for their support of Zelenskyy. “The Europeans are piling on in support of Zelensky. Here’s my message to the Europeans. Maybe it’s time for you to defend your continent,” Graham said in an interview with Breitbart Radio on Saturday. “Maybe it’s time for you to stop hollowing out your military. And if you want to use tough rhetoric toward Putin, how about back it up with some muscle?” Zelenskyy has remained adamant that security guarantees be included in any agreement to end the war alongside the minerals deal drafted by the White House. These guarantees, he said, are the only thing that will keep Putin, who has a record of violating agreements, from continuing to fight in Ukraine and beyond. On Friday, Trump told Zelenskyy he was being “disrespectful” and “gambling with World War III.” “He disrespected the United States of America in its cherished Oval Office,” Trump said in a post on his Truth Social website after the meeting ended. “He can come back when he is ready for Peace.” A day after the contentious Oval Office meeting, a White House official told NBC News that direct negotiations between the Trump Administration and Ukraine remain on hold. The administration has provided little clarity on what it would take for it to reengage with Zelenskyy but when asked before he departed from the White House on Friday night, Trump responded that Zelenskyy has “got to say I want to make peace” and suggested he refrain from “negative” comments about Putin. Trump also told reporters that Zelenskyy “overplayed his hand” and accused the Ukrainian president of “looking to go on and fight, fight, fight.” After leaving the White House, Zelenskyy posted on X, “Thank you America, thank you for your support, thank you for this visit. Thank you @POTUS, Congress, and the American people. Ukraine needs just and lasting peace, and we are working exactly for that.” During a Fox News interview Friday evening, Zelenskyy reiterated his appreciation of U.S. support but rebuffed calls to apologize for his comments at the White House. Zelenskyy has repeatedly thanked the United States for its help. In December 2022, he spoke before both chambers of Congress and his first words were: “Thank you so much. Thank you so much for that. Thank you. It’s too much for me. All this for our great people. Thank you so much. Dear Americans, in all states, cities and communities, all those who value freedom and justice, who cherish it as strongly as we Ukrainians in our cities, in each and every family, I hope my words of respect and gratitude resonate in each American heart.” According to the Department of Defense, since February 2022, Congress has appropriated about $183 billion for Ukraine’s defense, though Trump has claimed that the U.S. has spent over $300 billion on aid to Ukraine. 9. Atletico take over La Liga leadership after Madrid loss Atletico take over La Liga leadership after Madrid loss Real Madrid have stumbled in the three-way race for the Spanish league title as Isco guided Real Betis to a 2-1 comeback win over the defending champions. The former Madrid player delivered a corner kick that was headed in by fellow midfielder Johnny Cardoso in the 34th minute on Saturday, cancelling out Brahim Diaz’s opener. Isco then put Betis ahead from the penalty spot in the 54th after Madrid defender Antonio Rudiger knocked down Betis forward Jesus Rodriguez in the area. Madrid’s loss left them level on points with Barcelona (54), who host Real Sociedad on Sunday. “Madrid has the best players and a million different ways it can hurt you, so if it weren’t for the hard work of the entire team we wouldn’t have been able to do this,” Isco said, before adding that he was still “grateful” for his time at Madrid. Atletico moved two points clear of them both at the top of the table after substitute Julian Alvarez scored to secure a 1-0 win over Athletic Bilbao. The Argentine scored from a pass by Marcos Llorente in the 66th after both came off the bench to help break through Athletic’s defence. It was Alvarez’s 21st goal in all competitions since joining from Manchester City in the summer. Fourth-placed Athletic (48) came close to an equaliser with three efforts off the woodwork, including two by Inaki Williams. Kylian Mbappe was back starting for Madrid after missing one game because of a problem with a tooth. Coach Carlo Ancelotti substituted him with 15 minutes left, saying that his dental issue had impeded him from training properly and that his star striker “was not 100 per cent.” “This is a hard blow, and we have to react. Today we didn’t play well,” Ancelotti added. Madrid had led La Liga but are now struggling with just one victory in their last five rounds, and next face Atletico in Tuesday’s Champions League round-of-16 clash. Isco left Madrid three years ago, having helped them win five Champions League titles before he lost his starting spot and then struggled to get off the bench. But Madrid might wish they had him back after the 32-year-old midfielder was the most decisive player on the field at the Benito Villamarin. “We went for the win and generated more scoring chances than they did,” Betis boss Manuel Pellegrini, a former Madrid coach, said. “They played better in the first 15 minutes and deserved their goal, but from there on it was our match.” Elsewhere, Dodi Lukebakio continued to provide a bright spot in Sevilla’s otherwise drab season by scoring his 11th league goal in the 81st minute to secure a 1-1 draw with Rayo Vallecano, and Celta Vigo drew 2-2 at Girona. 10. JD Vance receives ice-cold reception as family arrives for Vermont skiing vacation JD Vance receives ice-cold reception as family arrives for Vermont skiing vacation Skiers at Sugarbush Resort in Vermont on Saturday morning experienced sub-freezing temperatures and snow flurries. But receiving the chilliest reception, by far, was Vice President JD Vance, who was met by protesters who shouted names and obscenities as the Vance motorcade rolled past. One sign read, “Vance is a traitor. Go ski in Russia.” Fanning the opposition to Vance’s visit to the Mad River Valley, a day after Vance and President Donald Trump appeared to side with Russia over Ukraine in an Oval Office meeting with Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky, was Sugerbush snow reporter Lucy Welch. According to Kottke.org, Welch emailed daily-report subscribers with a morning message criticizing the Trump administration for slashing Forest Service jobs and pointing out that Sugarbush is on National Forest land and threatened by climate change. “Right now, National Forest lands and National Parks are under direct attack by the current Administration, who is swiftly terminating the positions of dedicated employees who devote their lives to protecting the land we love, and to protecting us while we are enjoying that land,” Welch wrote. Welch’s email continued: “This Administration also neglects to address the danger, or even the existence of, climate change, the biggest threat to the future of our industry, and the skiing we all so much enjoy here.” Video clips showing protestors lining the roads and sharing their feelings have been circulating via social media. Some are shown carrying flags as a show of support for Ukraine. Fox news reported that the presence of protestors was so great that the Vance family was moved “to an “undisclosed location.” At nearby Mad River Glen, a sign outside informed, “Sorry VP. Sold out.” Vermont was won by Kamala Harris over Donald Trump by a landslide margin in the 2024 presidential race. So it’s not surprising that some protestors wondered why Vance chose Sugarbush for his family vacation. Threads user Catsonacouch wrote, “JD Vance choosing Vermont to ski is still so baffling to me: ‘I’d like to go away with the fam for the weekend, I KNOW, I’ll go where LITERALLY everybody hates me.’ “ It was not clear if the Vance family was able to enjoy quality time on the slopes. 12. Dutton pledges more fighter jets in defence spend boost Dutton pledges more fighter jets in defence spend boost More fighter jets would be added to Australia’s defence fleet as part of a multi-billion dollar boost to defence under a coalition government. Opposition Leader Peter Dutton said the coalition would spend $3 billion to reinstate a fourth squadron of F-35A fighter jets to the Air Force, should he win the upcoming election. The extra squadron would see 28 aircraft added to Australia’s fighter jets, which would bolster the fleet from 72 to 100. Mr Dutton said negotiations would take place as soon as possible for the defence force to get the fighter jets, with the hope it would be delivered in the next five years. “Only the coalition is committed to backing defence by increasing the current defence budget and providing our ADF with the capabilities they need,” he said. The $3 billion is expected to go towards securing the fourth squadron, but costs of the fighter jets themselves would be negotiated. Opposition defence spokesman Andrew Hastie said the funding would be part of rebuilding defence force capacity. “Our defence force has been driven into the ground. Morale is at an all-time low. We have a recruiting crisis, we have a retention, we have a readiness crisis,” he told Sky News on Sunday. “We want a strong country, and given today’s dangerous strategic circumstances, we are investing in it so that we can secure the *********** people and our interests.” Mr Hastie said the AUKUS security pact, which will enable Australia to obtain nuclear submarines, was all the more reason for defence to be prioritised with more spending. Australia will spend $368 billion to obtain the submarines. “The ADF is being forced to cannibalise itself. AUKUS is a massive, multigenerational endeavour. It’s a nation-building endeavour. It’s going to be expensive,” Mr Hastie said. “If we don’t account for the cost, the structural pressure that that will put on our defence budget, … other capabilities will be cannibalised.” The federal government said it expected defence spending to reach 2.4 per cent of GDP by 2033/34. Treasurer Jim Chalmers said there were questions on how the opposition intended to pay for their defence commitment. “(The fighter jets) are a very important piece of kit, but we don’t know where (Dutton) will find this $3 billion from, and he should tell us all about that,” he told Sky News. “This is the same guy who hasn’t signed up to the $50 billion in extra investment that we have found in a responsible budget to invest in our capability in defence.” Source link #Dutton #pledges #fighter #jets #defence #spend #boost Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

  14. U.S. federal workers hit with second wave of emails demanding job details U.S. federal workers hit with second wave of emails demanding job details Elon Musk speaks during the first cabinet meeting hosted by U.S. President Donald Trump, at the White House in Washington, DC, U.S., February 26, 2025. Brian Snyder | Reuters The Trump administration sent out a second round of emails on Friday evening demanding all federal employees summarize their work over the past week after the first effort a week ago fizzled amid a wave of confusing directives. Reuters has confirmed that the emails from the government’s human resources arm, the U.S. Office of Personnel Management, were sent to multiple agencies, asking workers to list five things they accomplished during the week. The move marks a renewed push by billionaire Elon Musk and his Department of Government Efficiency team to assess the performance of government employees as the administration looks to mass layoffs to dramatically trim the federal footprint. “The President has made it clear that this is mandatory for the executive branch,” Musk wrote on X. “Anyone working on classified or other sensitive matters is still required to respond if they receive the email, but can simply reply that their work is sensitive.” Musk attempted a similar tack last week, along with a threat that noncompliant workers could be fired, but he was stymied when some agencies such as the State and Justice Departments told their employees to stick to the chain of command. Ultimately, OPM informed agencies that responding to the emails was voluntary. But Musk, with President Donald Trump’s backing, continued to press for the emails as a means they said to hold workers accountable. Both men suggested that some federal employees on the payroll do not exist. Critics, including Democratic lawmakers and labor unions, say widespread cuts could hamper crucial government functions and services. The second round of emails does not include any threat of retaliation for noncompliance but say workers are expected to send responses at the beginning of each work week. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has directed Pentagon workers to comply, according to media reports, but the State Department again told their employees to hold off, according to a directive seen by Reuters. The Department of Homeland Security told its employees to respond to an internal DHS email address, labeled “accountability” because of its national security responsibilities, according to a memo reviewed by Reuters. The Justice Department also received the directive. The acting U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia, Ed Martin, told workers in his office to comply, according to a message seen by Reuters. “All federal government departments are cooperating with @DOGE,” Musk posted on Saturday. “For State, DoD and a few others, the supervisors are gathering the weekly accomplishments on behalf of individual contributors.” Reuters was able to confirm the emails were also sent to employees at the Internal Revenue Service, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the National Institutes for Health. Those agencies have all been targeted by DOGE for layoffs. Musk’s team last week instructed agencies across the government to submit plans by March 13 for a “significant reduction” in staffing across the federal workforce. Layoffs continue Already, about 100,000 workers have taken buyouts or been fired after DOGE was dispatched by Trump to gut federal staffing and spending. There are about 2.3 million federal employees in all. The layoffs have occurred in such haphazard fashion that some agencies such as the Food and Drug Administration have been forced to recall key personnel in order to ensure public safety. On Friday, the Social Security Administration, which sends out benefit checks to tens of millions of Americans, said it would cut 7,000 people from its workforce and shutter several regional offices. Most recently, the Trump administration has pulled the plug on a team of tech-savvy civil servants that helped build the Internal Revenue Service’s free tax filing service and revamped websites across government. In an email sent overnight to employees of the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) and seen by Reuters, the GSA’s Director of Technology Transformation Services Thomas Shedd said the team — known as 18F — had been identified as “non-critical.” Formed at the tail end of the Barack Obama administration, the unit acted as an internal tech consultancy within government, ferreting out duplication and waste, streamlining bureaucratic processes, and making public-facing websites more user-friendly. Questions about Musk’s role and DOGE are at the heart of multiple lawsuits seeking to block them from accessing government systems and confidential data. The suits allege that Musk and DOGE are violating the Constitution by wielding the kind of vast power that only comes from agencies created through the U.S. Congress or appointments made with confirmation by the U.S. Senate. Musk’s actions have also caused some tension and confusion among Trump’s White House aides, although Trump himself is said to be wholly on board with the effort. The CEO of Tesla and SpaceX is not a Cabinet-level official and did not face U.S. Senate confirmation. The Trump administration has been evasive about exactly what role he plays within DOGE. R9X is an exotic weapon that features an array of pop-out sword-like blades rather than a traditional high-explosive warhead. It is used as an extremely low collateral damage weapon that can target not just a vehicle, but a specific occupant inside by slashing through the car at just the right spot. TWZ was the first to identify this new weapon’s unique effects back in 2017. It has since become something of a gruesome fascination in the public domain, getting nicknames like the “Flying Ginsu” and “Ninja Bomb” due to its very unique capabilities. The caption of the CENTCOM video reads: CENTCOM Forces Kill the Senior Military Leader of Al-Qaeda Affiliate Hurras al-Din (HaD) in Syria On Feb. 23, U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) forces conducted a precision airstrike in Northwest Syria, targeting and killing Muhammed Yusuf Ziya Talay, the senior military leader of the terrorist organization Hurras al-Din (HaD), an Al-Qaeda affiliate. The airstrike is part of CENTCOM’s ongoing commitment, along with partners in the region, to disrupt and degrade efforts by terrorists to plan, organize, and conduct attacks against civilians and military personnel from the U.S., our allies, and our partners throughout the region and beyond. “As we have said in the past, we will continue to relentlessly pursue these terrorists in order to defend our homeland, and U.S., allied, and partner personnel in the region,” said Gen. Michael Erik Kurilla, commander, U.S. Central Command. No large explosion or fire is seen, just what appear to be sparks from the damaged vehicle slowing down. Then we get airborne color TV camera footage of the vehicle with the R9X’s trademark punched-through hole in its roof over the driver’s position. (CENTCOM Screenshot) The vehicle and background align with a targeted killing that was previously reported to have occurred on February 23rd that, at the time, had all the trademarks of an R9X hit, with the usual fragments of the weapon also seen in photos from the aftermath. #Syria: fragments of the missiles used today by US to kill a former Horas Al-Din member near Killi (N. #Idlib). Those Hellfire missiles (R9X) use blades instead of explosives. (Screenshot via X) The AGM-114R9X was developed in secret and has been used increasingly over the last eight years, including in very high-profile operations, without official acknowledgement of its existence. It is thought to be a weapon of choice for targeted assassinations using MQ-9 Reaper drones operated by the shadowy Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC). The missile also likely features a unique guidance capability that leverages automation in order to strike so precisely on just one part of a vehicle. The targeting FLIR footage seen in the CENTCOM video does show a locked vehicle (the bracket) and a set of crosshairs right over where the R9X was targeted, which could point to how this targeting process is executed, although it is not definitive at this time. The fact that the Pentagon released a video showing this weapon in action could indicate that we may finally find out official details about the R9X and its origins. 19. Trump says he will issue a posthumous pardon for Pete Rose Trump says he will issue a posthumous pardon for Pete Rose President Trump says he plans to issue “a complete PARDON of Pete Rose,” baseball’s late career hits leader who was banned from MLB and the Hall of Fame for sports betting. Mr. Trump posted on Truth Social on Friday night to say Rose, who died in September at age 83, “shouldn’t have been gambling on baseball, but only bet on HIS TEAM WINNING.” Mr. Trump did not specifically mention Rose’s tax case in which Rose pleaded guilty in 1990 to two counts of filing false tax returns and served a five-month prison sentence. The president said he would sign a pardon for Rose “over the next few weeks.” MLB and Rose agreed to a permanent ban in 1989 after an investigation determined he had bet on games involving the Cincinnati Reds from 1985-87 while playing for and managing the team. The Hall of Fame board of directors in 1991 adopted a rule preventing people on the permanently ineligible list from appearing on the hall ballot. The X-59 “quiet” supersonic jet was designed to break the sound barrier without producing the thunderous sonic booms that typically accompany supersonic flight. And based on the results of the vehicle’s latest tests, conducted at the Lockheed Martin Skunk Works facility in Palmdale, California, the X-59 might accomplish that feat soon. NASA and Lockheed Martin, the latter of which built the X-59, recently put the aircraft through electromagnetic interference testing on the ground. The goal was to ensure its onboard sensors, radio and navigation equipment do not interfere with one another. According to NASA engineers, the X-59 passed with flying colors. “Reaching this phase shows that the aircraft integration is advancing,” said Yohan Lin, NASA’s X-59 avionics lead, in an agency statement. “It’s exciting to see the progress, knowing we’ve cleared a major hurdle that moves us closer to X-59’s first flight.” During the tests, NASA not only activated the X-59’s avionics and sensor systems to ensure they didn’t interfere with one another, but also to look for any signs that these systems could affect systems on other research aircraft that will fly behind the X-69 during test flights. For instance, the agency plans to fly an F-15D jet behind the X-59. This aircraft will be equipped with a specially-designed air probe meant to help measure shockwaves the supersonic jet produces during flight. “It’s called a source-victim test — essentially, we activate one system and monitor the other for issues like noise, glitches, faults, or errors,” Lin said. As such, during the recent tests, NASA staged an F-15D just 47 feet (14 meters) from the X-59 to “confirm there’s compatibility between the two aircraft, even at close proximity,” Lin said. Because of its long nose, the radical-looking X-59 doesn’t feature a forward-looking windscreen. To see in front of it, pilots will instead use an augmented reality display that feeds views from cameras into screens in the cockpit. During testing, NASA will fly the X-59 over populated areas in the U.S. to study how its quieter supersonic “thump” is perceived by people on the ground. Supersonic flight above populated areas has been prohibited for decades due to the disruptions that sonic booms can cause — but, if successful, the X-59 could someday pave the way for quieter supersonic passenger aircraft.
