Hurricane expert shares sneak peek into forecast process month ahead of inaugural tropical outlook
With coastal residents just three months away from preparing for the upcoming hurricane season, some experts are well underway with planning, with some efforts that started before the previous season was finished.
Dr. Phil Klotzbach, a renowned hurricane specialist at Colorado State University, is known for his annual tropical weather outlooks that are issued during the spring and summer.
Klotzbach told FOX Weather that while CSU’s first outlook of the year will be released on Thursday, April 3, he began mentally preparing months ago.
“Honestly, I would say that we start thinking about the upcoming hurricane season before the previous season even ends,” he said. “We spend extensive time during the offseason reviewing our current modeling framework and potentially incorporating additional predictors.”
A key component of the upcoming forecast will be model guidance from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), the *** Met Office and the Japan Meteorological Agency, which all serve as a bedrock in the hurricane outlook.
Once sufficient model data is available, the hurricane expert explained that statistical models are then run to provide CSU with an idea of global weather features. The process is usually completed by around March 20, giving forecasters roughly a week or two to finalize the hurricane season outlook before its public release.
The statistical models don’t give forecasters an easy printout, such as 14 named storms, 7 hurricanes and 3 major hurricanes – which are average season totals. Instead, they offer a sense of the Accumulated Cyclone Energy, which then the CSU team builds the outlook from. ACE is calculated using a complex formula that takes into account each tropical cyclone’s maximum sustained wind speed and duration.
The April outlook is usually made up of dozens of pages, which outline everything from the probability of a strike to the expected numbers of cyclones and even why forecasters believe the season will either be inactive or active.
2025 Atlantic Hurricane Season Guide: Here’s What To Know About The Tropics This Year
The greatest number of named storms ever expected in an April outlook was last season’s 23, while the lowest was 7, which was called for in 2015.
The tradition of releasing an outlook was started by the late Dr. Bill Gray in 1984 has become the gold standard in weather forecasting.
Some years, outlooks are more accurate than others, as both known and hidden factors play a role in seasonal activity.
In 2024, CSU forecast 23 named storms, with 11 hurricanes and 5 reaching at least Category 3 status. While the number of hurricanes and major cyclones was accurate, the prediction of named storms would get a grade of C+ on a traditional grade school scale, as there were 18.
However, CSU’s forecast was more accurate than many others, with Penn State University even expecting between 27 and 39 tropical cyclones, nearly double what actually occurred.
2024 hurricane season summary
In addition to issuing this year’s outlook, Klotzbach is still reflecting on last year, with some theories he hopes to publish soon regarding why part of the 2024 season went awry, including an unexpected extended absence of tropical cyclones during the heart of the summer months.
“We’re trying to better understand why the lull took place and, of course, see if we could have predicted it,” Klotzbach stated. “I’m not sure there’s much we could have seen with our early outlooks, but I think we may be able to incorporate some Saharan dust data to help with the August forecast.”
A pattern forecasters have observed is that the second half of recent hurricane seasons tends to be much busier than the first, something CSU attributes to the status of the El Niño Southern Oscillation, rather than something like climate change.
Hurricane Season 2025: Here Are The Names For Storms You’ll See This Season
The ENSO is currently in flux, which means there may be more uncertainty in the initial hurricane outlooks this year due to what its status will be from June through November.
Klotzbach said he’s fairly confident that the year won’t be dominated by an El Niño, as strong trade winds across the Pacific will prevent warmer waters from accumulating for several weeks.
A surprising change across parts of the Atlantic is that tropical waters aren’t as warm as the lofty record temperatures they reached over the past two years, which will be an important factor in the 2025 hurricane season outlook.
2025 Hurricane Season Names
The first named storm of the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season will be Andrea, followed by Barry, Chantal and Dexter. The name Dexter replaces Dorian, which was retired after the 2019 season.

US R&B singer ****** Stone dies at age 63 in car ******
US singer ****** Stone, who was nominated for three Grammy Awards, has died at the age of 63, a representative has confirmed.
Deborah R Champagne, Stone’s representative who last spoke with her shortly after 9pm, said Stone died in a car accident in Montgomery, Alabama, following a performance.
Guy Todd Williams, better known as Rahiem from the Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, which was the first rap group inducted into the Rock Hall, said nine other passengers were in a van with Stone during the accident.
He said she was the only fatality.
“She left her indelible mark on the music industry initially as a member of the legendary rap group Sequence,” said Williams, who was signed to the same record label as Stone early in her career.
Stone, a native of South Carolina, was a member of female hip-hop trio The Sequence.
The group’s most popular song, Funk You Up, peaked at 15 on Billboard’s Hot Soul Singles.
Rolling Stone described it as the first rap hit performed by women.
The group was signed to the now defunct Sugar Hill Records, a label under of Warner Music Group, which also represented Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five among other artists.
Stone released her debut solo album ****** Diamond in 1999.
It was certified Gold by the Recording Industry Association of America the following year.
Her highest charting album -The Art of Love & War released in 2007 – peaked at 11 on the US Billboard 200 and number one on Billboard’s Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums.
Outside of music, she acted in several films with her debut being The Hot Chick alongside Rob Schneider and Rachel McAdams.

Monroe man arrested for allegedly terrorizing neighborhood
Monroe man arrested for allegedly terrorizing neighborhood
MONROE COUNTY, Mich. (FOX 2) – A 41-year-old man is behind bars after allegedly terrorizing his old neighborhood in Monroe.
What they’re saying
Commander John Wall with Monroe police says Jeremy Rose allegedly picked his old neighborhood to terrorize, hurling horrible racial slurs at two little girls.
“It goes from racial slurs to some other unintelligent comments about narcotics and some just off-the-wall kind of things,” Wall said. “He continued to engage and come onto the property of these people, and the altercation turned physical.”
As neighbors came out, he picked another victim, a woman, grabbed onto her, and tossed a booze bottle at her house. Then someone stepped in and put Rose in a headlock.
“He just didn’t want to listen, and he wanted whatever he was on his own plan, whatever he was trying to do, trying to accomplish, we don’t know,” Wall said.
The booze bottle might be a clue and possibly something even more behind this tirade.
Monroe police were on the scene, wrangling Rose into their car. Police say he was kicking and ramming his head into the car, leaving a gash on his head. He even spat into the face of one of the officers, according to officials.
What’s next
He’s charged with drunk driving, breaking and entering, and destroying property.
He is also facing the law on some old domestic charges.
Given just a $10,000 bond.
Even with that relatively low bond, Rose is still in lock-up at the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, awaiting his next court date.

Tariffs? ******** vehicles are already being sold in the U.S.
In May 2024, the Biden administration imposed a 100% tariff on ******** electric vehicles imported to the United States. Yet, surprisingly, ********-made vehicles have been sold here for a decade, just not under ******** brands.
To be fair, the numbers remain small. According to Automotive News, nameplates built in China and sold in the U.S. accounted for just 74,007 units in 2024, less than 0.5% of the 15.85 million vehicles sold last year.
Still, the camel’s nose is under the tent, and ironically, American automakers, who have the most to lose, helped open the door.

Why it’s a concern
******** automakers benefit from heavy government subsidies, low wages, and, in some cases, reported forced labor, which give them cost advantages other manufacturers can’t match. China’s intellectual property laws are also lax, with little enforcement or respect for foreign patents.
Furthermore, any automaker looking to build cars in China must partner with a local company, essentially sharing their manufacturing expertise. It’s no mystery why China’s automotive sector has improved so rapidly.
Simply put, American and European automakers helped build the ******** manufacturing juggernaut that now threatens their own survival.

Despite these concerns, U.S. automakers have been manufacturing vehicles like the ones below in China and selling them stateside for years.

Made in Sweden? Not quite.
Volvo and its EV spin-off, Polestar, may have Swedish roots, but they’re both owned by Zhejiang Geely Holding Group, a ******** company based in Hangzhou.
Volvo S60 Inscription – The first ********-made vehicle sold in the U.S. (2015).
Volvo S90 – Built in Daqing, China.
Volvo XC30 – Built in Zhangjiakou, China.
Polestar 2 – Entirely sourced from China.
Despite Geely selling 11,136 vehicles in the U.S. last year, Volvo avoided tariffs thanks to its manufacturing facility in Ridgeville, South Carolina.
Final thoughts
Western automakers are now scrambling to combat the rise of ******** manufacturers. Yet the very threat they fear is one they helped create, as China’s rapid automotive rise was fueled by American and European partnerships.
Now, as ******** automakers become global contenders, their newfound manufacturing dominance is coming full circle.

Kurdish PKK militants declare ceasefire with Turkey
Kurdish PKK militants declare ceasefire with Turkey
The outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party PKK militant group has declared an immediate ceasefire, a news agency close to it says, heeding jailed leader Abdullah Ocalan’s disarmament call, in a major step toward ending a 40-year insurgency.
Ocalan on Thursday called on the PKK to lay down its arms and dissolve, a move that Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan’s government and the opposition pro-Kurdish DEM party voiced support for.
The ceasefire could have wide-ranging implications for the region if it succeeds in ending a conflict that has killed more than 40,000 people since the PKK – now based in the mountains of northern Iraq – launched its armed insurgency in 1984.
It could also give Erdogan a domestic boost and a historic opportunity to bring peace and development to southeast Turkey, where the conflict has killed thousands and severely damaged the economy.
The group said it hoped Turkey would give Ocalan, held in near total isolation since 1999, more freedoms so he can lead a disarmament process, adding that the necessary political and democratic conditions must be established for it to succeed.
“We, as the PKK, fully agree with the content of the call and state that, from our front, we will heed the necessities of the call and implement it,” the group said in a statement, according to the Firat news agency.
“Beyond this, issues like laying down arms being put into practice can only be realised under the practical leadership of Leader Apo,” the group said, using its nickname for Ocalan, adding it would halt all hostilities immediately unless attacked.
The PKK, designated a terrorist group by Turkey and many of its allies including Australia, said it was ready to convene a congress, as Ocalan urged, but the necessary security conditions should be established for him to “personally direct and run” it.
Speaking at a fast-breaking event with martyr families in Istanbul on the first day of the ******* holy month of Ramadan on Saturday, Erdogan said Turkey will resume operations against the PKK if the disarmament process is stalled and assured families that the process would not hinder counter-terrorism.
“If the promises that are made are constantly stalled, if an attempt to turn to trickery by eyewashing, changing names and doing as you please, we can’t be blamed for what happens,” he said.
“If needed, we will keep up our operations – which are still continuing – leaving no stone standing and leaving no heads on shoulders, until every last terrorist is eliminated,” he added, saying Turkey would also end cross-border threats.
Earlier, Vice President Cevdet Yilmaz said on X that the dissolution of the PKK “without any negotiation” would usher in a new era.
Previous efforts to end the insurgency, held in the years 2009-11 and 2013-15, failed and resulted in increased violence.
The DEM party urged the government on Friday to take steps towards democratisation, telling Reuters that its response was critical.
For the process to advance, the PKK said Ocalan must be given “physical freedom, achieve living and working conditions, form relationships with anyone he wants, including friends, without obstacles”.
Whether Turkey will address these issues is unclear.
Justice Minister Yilmaz Tunc told broadcaster CNN Turk on Friday that no amnesty, house arrest or other options were being discussed and that there were no negotiations.
Analysts have said Erdogan, who has made repeated efforts in the past to end the conflict, is focused on the domestic political dividends that peace could bring as he looks to extend his two-decade rule beyond 2028 when his term expires.
Ending the insurgency would remove a constant flashpoint in Kurdish-run, oil-rich northern Iraq, while facilitating efforts by Syria’s new administration to assert greater sway over areas in northern Syria controlled by Kurdish forces.
Ocalan’s call, prompted by a surprise proposal in October by Devlet Bahceli, an ultra-nationalist ally of Erdogan, has been welcomed by the United States, and the European Union as well as by Turkey’s neighbours Iraq and Iran.
On Saturday, Bahceli said he welcomed the PKK’s statement to heed Ocalan’s call, saying there can be no negotiating with the PKK and that its disarmament and disbandment, along with all its extensions, would be beneficial for everyone.
“In such a critical environment and circumstances, a historic window of opportunity has been opened for Turkey,” he said in a statement, adding nobody should be allowed to derail the process.

Early Autopsy Results Offer Key Clues Into Gene Hackman Death Mystery
Early Autopsy Results Offer Key Clues Into Gene Hackman Death Mystery
Preliminary autopsy results were released by authorities in Santa Fe Thursday as part of an investigation into the “unusual” deaths of Oscar-winning actor Gene Hackman and his wife Betsy Arakawa.
In a statement on Thursday afternoon, the Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office in New Mexico said an autopsy was performed on the bodies of Hackman, 95, and Arakawa, 64, early Thursday morning. According to an affidavit obtained by People, Arakawa “showed obvious signs of death, body decomposition, bloating in her face and mummification in both hands and feet.”
Hackman showed similar signs of decomposition, the report added.
Though Hackman’s daughter, Elizabeth Jean, earlier told TMZ that the family suspected that carbon monoxide poisoning was to blame, authorities did not point to immediate signs of such poisoning or external trauma.
“Initial findings noted no external trauma to either individual,” Sheriff Adan Mendoza said in a statement, adding that carbon monoxide and toxicology tests were requested for both individuals.
Mendoza added: “There were no apparent signs of foul play.”
However, he stressed, “The manner and cause of death has not been determined. The official results of the autopsy and toxicology reports are pending. This remains an open investigation.”

Meanwhile, CNN affiliate KOAT reports foul play has not been ruled out, adding final autopsy results and toxicology reports will hold the answer. Citing the search warrant, KOAT reports deputies believe, based on evidence and experience, the couple suddenly fell.
“The autopsy is going to be key, and the toxicology,” Mendoza said during a Thursday news conference.
Results “generally take anywhere from 4-6 weeks to generate,” Chris Ramirez, spokesperson for the New Mexico medical investigator’s office, told CNN.
Santa Fe City Fire personnel and the New Mexico Gas Company were earlier requested to test the scene for carbon monoxide and other foreign elements, the statement said. The scene was deemed safe, according to cops, and “at approximately 9:30 p.m. a search warrant was issued and executed on the residence.”
According to an affidavit from a Santa Fe detective obtained by People, the Santa Fe City Fire Department did not see signs of a carbon monoxide leak or poisoning.
“New Mexico Gas Company responded to the residence and was conducting active testing on the gas line in and around the residence,” the affidavit reportedly said. “As of now there are no signs or evidence indicating there were any problems associated to the pipes in and around the residence.”
The couple and one of their dogs were found dead in their New Mexico mansion on Wednesday after a neighbor requested a ******** check.
An emergency 911 call by a local caretaker captured the horrifying call to authorities when the bodies were found. “They’re not moving—just send somebody out here really quick!” the subdivision caretaker said in the 911 call.
Actor Gene Hackman signs a copy of his new book
Police earlier said that the deaths were “suspicious enough in nature to require a thorough search and investigation,” noting that the front door was left ajar, the couple’s bodies were found in separate rooms, and an open pill bottle was discovered with pills strewn all over the floor.
“Despite his age, he was in very good physical condition,” Leslie Anne Hackman, another of the actor’s daughters, told The Daily Mail on Thursday.
“We were close. I hadn’t talked to them for a couple months, but everything was normal and everything was good,” she said.

****** reports no progress in talks on second phase
The latest round of talks on a second phase of the ceasefire between Israel and ****** has made “no progress” and it is unclear when they will resume, a senior ****** official says.
Phase one expires on Saturday but under the deal’s terms, fighting should not resume while negotiations are underway on phase two, which could end the war in the Gaza Strip, result in Israeli troops withdrawing and allow the remaining living hostages to return home.
According to Israel, 32 of the 59 hostages still in the Gaza Strip are dead.
The first phase, which paused 15 months of fighting in the ************ enclave, featured the release of 33 hostages, including eight bodies, in exchange for nearly 2000 ************ prisoners.
Hundreds of thousands of people returned home to the north of the Gaza Strip, aid into the territory increased and Israeli forces withdrew to buffer zones.
Officials from Israel, Qatar, Egypt and the United States have been involved in negotiations on the second phase in Cairo.
****** did not attend but its position has been represented through Egyptian and Qatari mediators.
Basem Naim, a member of ******’ political bureau, told the Associated Press there had been “no progress” before Israeli negotiators returned home on Friday.
It was unclear whether those mediators would return to Cairo to resume talks on Saturday as expected.
Naim said he had “no idea” when negotiations might resume.
****** started the war with its October 7, 2023, attack that left 1200 dead in Israel, mostly civilians, and took 250 hostage.
Since then, Israel’s military offensive has killed more than 48,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza health officials, who do not differentiate between civilian and combatant deaths but say more than half the dead have been women and children.
The two sides agreed to the three-phase ceasefire deal in January.
Israeli groups rallied on Saturday night to urge their government to continue the deal.
****** has reaffirmed its “full commitment to implementing all terms of the agreement in all its stages and details” and called on the international community to pressure Israel to immediately proceed to the second phase.
Other challenges complicate the ceasefire’s future.
Israel has said ****** cannot be involved in governing the Gaza Strip after the war.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has also ruled out any role in the Gaza Strip for the foreign-backed ************ Authority, dominated by ******’ main rival ******.
****** leader Mohamed Darwish on Saturday reiterated the group is willing to hand over power to a ************ national consensus government or an Egypt-proposed body of technocrats not aligned with ****** or ******.
His comments came in an open letter to next week’s summit of Arab leaders in Cairo.
****** has dismissed Israel’s suggestion that its leadership go into exile.
****** also rejected an Israeli proposal to extend the ceasefire’s first phase by 42 days, doubling its length, saying it goes against the truce agreement, according to a member of the group who requested anonymity to discuss the closed-door negotiations.
The Israeli proposal calls for extending the ceasefire through the ******* holy month of Ramadan, which started on Saturday, in return for an additional hostage exchange, the ****** member said.
****** published video footage on Saturday showing a group of hostages, including two brothers embracing before one of them was released.
The video, filmed under duress, was likely taken before February 15, when Iair ***** was released and left his brother, Eitan, behind.
The faces of what appear to be other hostages are blurred.
“I am very happy that my brother will be released tomorrow but this is not logical in any way to separate families,” Eitan says.
“Sign the second and third phase. Enough of war.”

A FedEx cargo plane had to make an emergency landing at Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey shortly after take-off, as part of the aircraft was set ablaze when it hit a bird. FedEx Flight 3609 was headed for Indianapolis on the morning of Saturday, March 1, when it had to make a sudden return to the airport at around 8:07 a.m. local time due to the “bird strike,” the airport told PEOPLE in a statement. The aircraft struck the animal during takeoff, FedEx confirmed.

Champions Trophy 2025: England’s defeat in Karachi should mark start of rebuild
Champions Trophy 2025: England’s defeat in Karachi should mark start of rebuild
McCullum finds himself in a tricky spot.
Morgan’s rebuild was remarkable, it progressed all of the way to Lord’s in 2019, but it began at a distinct path, with England playing dull, dated cricket.
The requirements were clear – pick younger, more ambitious players available in county cricket but not selected. The present-day route is far less obvious.
Initially, McCullum must decide if these are good players under-performing.
Debate can be had over Liam Dawson, who should have been in Pakistan as all-rounder and second spin option, but there are few other glaring omissions.
Would the 35-year-old left-arm spinner have made this side semi-finalists? You are always a better player when away from the spotlight.
Livingstone looks to be fighting for his ODI future and Salt is under pressure after a tournament in which he has averaged 10 but the rest of the top seven – Ben Duckett, Joe Root, Harry Brook, Jos Buttler and, to a lesser extent given his poor showing here, Smith – still looks a fearsome line-up on paper.
In contrast, the bowling needs work and McCullum hinted at regrets over the limited, pace-heavy approach employed in Pakistan.
“Obviously, our gameplan was to try and bring fast bowling over here, try to stock our batting and give ourselves that sort of conviction and that method,” McCullum said.
“We may not have got it totally right this time but you’ve got to have conviction in something.”
His side’s new-ball economy rate is currently the most expensive in the world, their powerplay threat only better than Zimbabwe, Ireland and the United Arab Emirates and their middle-over record in Pakistan their worst at a major tournament.
It leaves plenty of room for improvement.
But with Jofra Archer on a three-year contract and Mark Wood lauded wholesale change does not look likely.
Hampshire quick Sonny Baker – the 21-year-old quick who impressed for the Lions this winter – is one on the radar, while there is still hope Josh Hull could be the left-armer England so desperately require but otherwise, England will rebuild with the players seen here, meaning other gains will have to be made.
It is three months and 23 days since England lined up with a top seven of Salt, Will Jacks, Jordan Cox, Bethell, Livingstone, Sam Curran and Dan Mousely. Greater consistency in selection would be a good place to start.
That will be aided by the fact McCullum is now in charge of both red and white-ball teams, meaning there is no longer a tussle between two coaches with two different priorities.
Difficulties will still appear with the New Zealander keen to promote multi-format regulars rather than white-ball specialists, which will leave a winter featuring an Ashes series flanked by white-ball trips to New Zealand and Sri Lanka to be balanced with great care.
McCullum is now England’s man for all seasons, who has sparked a rebuild twice before – first in Wellington and then with the Test side.
His third act may be his most difficult.
