Alkahest looks very good. Emphasis on 'looks' because both trailers released so far have been very scripted. Also, emphasis on 'good' because you get to bully goblins with your feet. It's an open world RPG boasting a combat sandbox full of the sort of reactive flourishes you might find in an immersive sim. Crucially for fans of Dark Messiah Of Might And Magic (I've seen the words "spiritual successor" floating about, although not from the devs themselves) one of those touches is a boot. Here's the boot in action: Read more View the full article

It is sometimes hard to believe that Cyberpunk 2077 launched all the way back in 2020, and to a hugely negative critical reception no less. Now, it remains a poster child for how to do a good first-person RPG, and one of the few decent cyberpunk-focused video games available. Thank your own personal deity--possibly The Outer Gods--it's Friday! Winter might be creeping in, but these weekend game deals are bringing the heat. Whether you’re a Switch slasher, a PlayStation purist, an Xbox adventurer or a PC power user, there’s something worth your clicks in this mix. Stock up for the weekend and I'll catch you Monday! This Day in Gaming In retro news, I’m celebrating the 19th birthday of Metroid Prime: Hunters while remembering the mild carpal tunnel it gave me. Developed for the newly minted DS, its standout innovation was the incorporation of stylus-driven aiming paired with six-player ad-hoc wireless multiplayer, allowing us hunters to engage in fast-paced, Phazon-fueled deathmatches on the go. By blending precision touchscreen controls with diverse character-specific abilities, it instantly sold me and my mates on the concept of portable, hyper-competitive first-person shooters. We had an absolute (morph) ball with it. Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth gets pretty much everything right, from its gameplay to its narrative. It is hard to fault Rebirth as, at least to this JRPG aficionado, it is the perfect experience. Naturally, detractors will point to the game's endless cavalcade of mini-games, some of which are a genuine joy to play through, while others feel like the developers were purposefully trying to test out patience. However, beyond that, the rest of the game is practically perfect. View the full article
I find that there really is a lot to love about Assassin's Creed Shadows. For all of Ubisoft's many faults - and there really are many - and the series' somewhat lackluster output as of late, Shadows manages to get a lot right. From its vast and beautiful setting to its interesting narrative and strong character work, Shadows may not always deliver on its promise of a riveting stealth sandbox in Feudal Japan, but when it gets it right, it really shines.
