Xbox Game Pass adds a lot of games, but if you're following along with the service, it's relatively easy to keep track of them. Since the subscription's biggest value is its library, Microsoft tends to promote new additions as clearly as possible, especially when it comes to day-one releases. It's occasionally possible for something to get shafted, however, which happened on a couple of levels with the most recent slate of announcements. View the full article
Summerfall Studios co-founder and former Dragon Age writer David Gaider has been reflecting, not for the first time, on his career at BioWare under EA. In a brisk recap of a decade-and-change of sequels, changes of direction, and mid-project reboots, he sums up EA's difficulty with Dragon Age as basically one of having no real faith in the wide appeal of role-playing games. Is it weird to have nostalgia for an operating system? I don't mean missing a particular feature that's been removed from modern versions or a specific productivity setting that's no longer supported. I mean a sense of longing for the vibes of the computer interface you grew up with, an ache for the aesthetics of user interfaces past. I would have thought I was immune to this particular brand of nostalgia. Then I happened upon Desktop Survivors 98, a new Vampire Survivors-style "bullet heaven" autoshooter that leans hard into the aesthetics of the late '90s Windows machines I grew up with. And while that low-res, 256-color presentation is what drew me in, it was the intriguing mouse-controlled gameplay underneath that has kept me coming back for more retro-styled action all week. Start me up When it comes to capturing the feel of the '90s computer environment, Desktop Survivors 98 gets everything just right. This is in large part due to rampant theft of familiar old-school icons; items like My Computer, Calculator, Minesweeper, Search, and more look like they were taken directly from a classic Microsoft tile set. The game's low-res desktop backgrounds and Windows also look like they came out of a years-old Microsoft style book. Read full article Comments View the full article
Despite the community's interest in expanding the game's multiplayer features, Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 will not be increasing its co-op party size beyond three players, the developer has confirmed. The sequel to Relic's iconic Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine is limited to three players in its campaign. The publisher of Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2, Focus Entertainment, recently announced a new co-op Siege mode for the game in an upcoming update. View the full article
Dragon Age: The Veilguard left me conflicted. On one hand, seeing Thedas brought to life so beautifully, and finally getting to visit regions I'd only heard about in lore snippets and storybooks, was a dream come true. On the other hand, its narrative - what, for me, made the series so special - felt weaker than its predecessors', and the action-driven combat never quite gelled. Yet it worked for many others, earning largely solid reviews that weren't far off the now-lauded Dragon Age 2. But there's been an air of sadness or finality over the game since its launch, with no expansions on the horizon - a first for the series. Read the rest of the story... WD and Samsung have only just jumped on the PCIe 5.0 gaming SSD bandwagon, but the next generation of super-fast drives is already waiting in the wings. A new PCIe 6.0 SSD from Micron has just been demonstrated at the Computex tradeshow in Taiwan, and its potential speeds are immense. Of course, none of the best gaming motherboard designs for desktop PCs feature PCIe 6.0 support yet, and the PCI Special Interest Group (PCI-SIG) hasn't even started certifying PCIe 6.0 devices yet, so it will be a while before this Micron tech makes it into your gaming rig. Even so, it's cool to see the tech that could be used in the top-speed SSDs of tomorrow this far in advance. Read the rest of the story... Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time is out, and it's already quite popular. In light of this, Level-5 has announced some free DLC is on the way, in recognition of the new Fantasy Life's positive reception. Announced on the Level-5 site, the developer has confirmed free DLC is coming to Fantasy Life i. While no release date is set yet, the team is teasing some new recipes, as well as new content to "update the world" (via Gematsu). It will also apparently allow players to utilize high-rarity weapons obtained from Treasure Groves and other sources. Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time went live for early access on May 18, with its full launch on May 21. It quickly climbed the Steam charts and started drawing players in, whether they were on the look-out for a new life-sim game or just eager for a new Fantasy Life game. Level-5's latest sits at a 'Very Positive' user review rating on Steam at the moment with over 3,000 reviews, and given the early confirmation of free DLC, it seems like the new game has certainly taken off. It feels like a solid win for Level-5, even after the departure of Keiji Inafune last year to "reassess and restructure" the project. Business operations of Level-5 Comcept were transferred to the parent company after Inafune left. In a post from March 2025, Level-5 boss Akihiro Hino described Inafune's departure as an "unexpected challenge." Fantasy Life i has taken off though, which hopefully bodes well for the rest of Level-5's roster of upcoming games. The studio announced a slew of games in a February 2023 Nintendo Direct, and while some have released, others are still in development. The yet-to-be-released games include some heavy hitters, like futuristic detective RPG DecaPolice and the next installment in the Professor Layton series, Professor Layton and the New World of Steam. While we wait to see when and how those games land, at least Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time players have some more chill life updates to look forward to. If you're currently playing Fantasy Life i, make sure to head over to our Fantasy Life i Gift Codes hub, where we're cataloguing all the Gift Codes and how to redeem them for some in-game goodies. Since it launched last year, Warhammer 40,000 Space Marine 2 has strictly supported only three-player co-op for the campaign and PvE Operations, but a new mod increases that limit to let 12 players fight the Imperium's foes together. The mod is certainly impressive, and adds some new variety to the game, but the developers at Saber Interactive are adamant that Space Marine 2 is sticking to its three-person limit. Star Wars Battlefront 3 has long felt as far out of reach as fellow theoretical third entries such as Half-Life 3. The original Pandemic and Lucasarts games only managed a pair, and EA's Battlefront 2 was met with a mixed reception at launch thanks to its microtransaction model. Post-launch support from EA and DICE, however, took great strides to improve it, and it now holds an 87% positive Steam rating. As player counts soar in the wake of Andor Season 2, a former developer says his team "want to get the gang back together" to make Battlefront 3. Read the rest of the story... Stop Killing Games are a self-described consumer movement who are aggrieved about all the games with online requirements that become partly or completely unplayable, once publishers end official server support. They’re trying to persuade larger advocacy organisations like The European Consumer Organisation to propose new laws that put a stop to such shenanigans. To support their campaign, they’ve carried out a survey of games with online requirements to work out how many are "dead", dying or enduring thanks to developer or fan-implemented “end of life” plans, such as patched-in offline functionality. The resulting Google spreadsheet has 738 entries, of which a whopping 70% are apparently no longer playable or destined to become that way. Read more View the full article

Elden Ring Nightreign will soon let players drop into the shifting lands of Limveld, exploring and fighting for survival either solo or in groups of three. For the duos out there though, it sounds like you'll need to be open to a third. In IGN's interview with Elden Ring Nightreign director Junya Ishizaki, the Nightreign lead discussed the choice to lean on solos and trios as the core experience options. When asked why there's no option for a pair of players to drop in together without a matchmade third player, Ishizaki said it was overlooked. "The simple answer is that this is simply something that was overlooked during development as just a two-player option, so we're very sorry about that," said Ishizaki. "As we said before, we set out to make this a multiplayer co-op game for three players, balanced for three players, so that was the main focus and it's at the core of Nightreign. "Of course, I myself as a player understand that and often want times where I'm just playing myself, so this is something that we considered from the start," Ishizaki continued. "And so we did put a lot of effort into creating this experience that was playable for solo players in as much as the rules and new systems allowed. So in putting all our efforts into that aspect, we kind of overlooked and neglected the duos aspect, but this is something that we are looking at and considering for post-launch support as well." So if you're playing with just your favorite duos partner, be ready to accept a random third into your lives. Who knows? You might match up with someone pretty good at the game. If you're playing solo, it does sound like Elden Ring Nightreign takes that into account. Ishizaki said the parameters of Elden Ring Nightreign "adjust dynamically depending on the number of players in that session," so lone wolves shouldn't be too overwhelmed in single-player. You'll have to find and locate some self-revive options, which are incorporated for those opting for single-player. And if you're playing trios, well, that's apparently what Elden Ring Nightreign is built around. Whether duos support shows up or not, having an extra hand around can't hurt against some of the fearsome bosses waiting in Nightreign. Elden Ring Nightreign is out on May 30, 2025 for PC, PlayStation 4 and 5, and Xbox One and Series X and S. Eric is a freelance writer for IGN. View the full article
The French Revolution was a time of overwhelming and quotidian violence. As Louis Antoine de Saint-Just—the revolution's Angel of Death himself—put it in Georg Büchner's play Danton's Death, "Is it so remarkable that the stream of the revolution should at every bend and cataract cast up its corpses? … Are a few hundred dead bodies to hold us back? Moses led his people through the Red Sea and into the wilderness till the old corrupt generation was exterminated… Legislators! We have no Red Sea and no wilderness, but we have war and the guillotine!".. Read more.View the full article
Dust, in any and all of its variations, will forever be the most iconic Counter-Strike map. But throughout its 26-year history, Valve's FPS has been defined by dozens of brilliant battlefields. In Condition Zero, we had Assault. In CSGO, it was Cobblestone. Personally, I'll always be partial to a bit of Office, and even Aztec, from time to time. But what about Cache? A custom map for CS: Source, with a few balances and tweaks to benefit the Terrorist side, it became one of the best and most beloved maps in all of CSGO. So far, however, excluding a mod version on Steam Workshop, there has been no Counter-Strike 2 version of Cache - but that is almost certainly about to change. Read the rest of the story... Valve is releasing version 3.7 of SteamOS to the general public, and among the routine updates and changes is a big one: This is the SteamOS release that finally adds official support for some kinds of PC hardware other than Valve's own Steam Deck. Valve mentions certain specific handhelds as having either "official" or "improved support," including the Asus ROG Ally, the Lenovo Legion Go, and the Lenovo Legion Go S. It also includes directions for configuring the original Legion Go and ROG Ally for SteamOS installation. But Valve says that only the Steam Deck and Legion Go S have fully baked SteamOS support. The release claims to run on "other AMD powered handhelds" more broadly, implying that most third-party handheld PCs with Ryzen Z1 or Z2-series processors ought to support at least some basic functionality. Other all-AMD desktops and laptops have a decent shot at being supported, too. Read full article Comments View the full article
