  6. Once upon a time I wasn't actually a games journalist - crazy, I know. Before I started writing about esports and League of Legends, I wiled away the hours pouring over various history books, eventually earning myself two pretty snazzy history degrees. While a lot of my time was spent analysing WWII correspondence and weathered old Celtic stonework, one of my favorite things to study were alternative histories - novels that reimagined set-in-stone historical events. It's no surprise, then, that Mundfish's Atomic Heart quickly became one of my favorite shooters of all time. What would it look like if the Soviets had become the global superpower? 7. When you talk about matches made in gaming heaven, IO Interactive and a James Bond game is certainly one of them - on paper, at least. The Hitman developer's penchant for creating stealthy, surprising, and emergent gameplay moments makes it the logical choice to create a new 007 game, something that's been a long time coming. Well, this week you'll finally get to see the studio's highly anticipated Project 007, which now has an official title: 007 First Light. Read the rest of the story... 8. Everyone loves the trebuchet, the Hassar, and the stoic, impervious Teutonic Knight. But do you know who's the true hero of Age of Empires 2? The humble villager. The villager gathers your wood, farms your food, and digs up your stone and gold. Without them, you're totally helpless. The same is true in other RTS classics. Where would you be in Command and Conquer without the diligent Harvester? How far could you get in Homeworld if you didn't have a carrier and a cargo barge? This is what real strategy is about, the combination of both logistics and hubristics. With Foxhole, Siege Camp has already changed the game. Now, the developer is back with a gigantic new RTS and medieval MMO hybrid. This is Anvil Empires, and you'll be able to play it soon. Read the rest of the story... View the full article
  9. So long and farewell, XDefiant. We barely knew ye. After a few weeks of initial excitement, Ubisoft's FPS found itself unable to retain players or keep them spending enough money to make the free-to-play live-service shooter sustainable. And so tonight, a little over a year since launching, it shuts down forever. Image via Ubisoft The announcement that the game was shutting down came six months ago, so it's been known for quite some time that the title would be sunset, but everything goes dark on June 3 for the final time. "Free-to-play, in particular, is a long journey," executive producer Mark Rubin said on Dec. 3, 2024. "Many free-to-play games take a long time to find their footing and become profitable. It’s a long journey that Ubisoft and the teams working on the game were prepared to make until very recently. But unfortunately, the journey became too much to sensibly continue." Featuring Ubisoft IP characters and likenesses such as Watch_Dogs, The Division, Rainbow Six, and Far Cry, XDefiant got off to a hot start with eight million players in its first week after launching on May 21, 2024. It also boasted high viewership on Twitch while targeting a Call of Duty audience that was frustrated by skill-based matchmaking, which XDefiant did not use in its casual playlists. But the honeymoon ******* did not last very long, as the game failed to capture player attention, and most importantly, their money. The game was in development hell for several years, experiencing multiple delays and tumult behind the scenes, according to reports. But once it finally came out, the excitement felt at least a little bit real for a while until player count and interest steadily dwindled throughout 2024, leading to the game's cancellation. Despite adding seasonal content like new factions, weapons, and maps, along with ranked play, XDefiant lost out to the rest of the industry and was most likely dealt a death blow by ****** Ops 6 launching in October. By the end of August, Insider Gaming reported that XDefiant was on "borrowed time," and just a few months later, it was made official that the game was being put out to pasture. Image via Ubisoft I enjoyed XDefiant at first...in small bursts. It brought back some of the memories of fast-paced, Twitchy console shooters like CoD's of the past. But it unfortunately did little to keep me interested for more than a few weeks. And apparently, I'm not alone in this regard. XDefiant unfortunately marks the latest in a long line of games that try to go big in the live-service shooter genre, only to find out that there are only so many gamers and only so much time for people to play. And it probably won't be the last. The post XDefiant, the once-touted ‘CoD killer,’ shuts down tonight. Here’s how Ubisoft’s shooter totally misfired appeared first on Destructoid. 10. The 2025 installment of the Parks Fest event has arrived, and there are lots of special items you can earn throughout it in Disney Dreamlight Valley. To do so, you have to tackle several tricky tasks like the Squirrel! duty. This quest doesn't give you any helpful information beyond the name acting as a slight hint as to what needs to be done. It's not really enough to help you get going on this task, so if you're stuck, here's how to complete Squirrel! in Disney Dreamlight Valley. Parks Fest event duty in DDV, you need to craft one Dug Popcorn Bucket. This is one of several different buckets you can craft throughout the event, but it's the only one that works for this new task. How to craft Dug Popcorn Bucket in Disney Dreamlight Valley You need four different types of Buttons to craft the Dug Popcorn Bucket, including Green Buttons, Blue Buttons, Flower Buttons, and Purple Buttons. Here's how many you need of each type and how to get them. ButtonAmountHow to getGreen Button40Earned by completing daily and weekly event quests.Blue Button15Can be fished out of special white bubble spots around the Dazzle Beach and Peaceful Meadow biomes.Flower Button20Can be found growing in the wild around the Peaceful Meadow and Plaza biomes throughout Parks Fest.Purple ButtonFiveCan be crafted using one Blue Button, two Red Buttons, and 100 Dreamlight. Gathering all of the Buttons you need to make this item can be a pretty time-consuming process. If you're not up for the challenge, you might want to try using the Uncrafting Station to make it a bit easier. You can use this machine, which is unlocked during the Cheshire Cat's level seven The Uncrafting Station quest, to break down already made buckets for parts. How to unlock Dug Popcorn Bucket in Disney Dreamlight Valley Screenshot by Destructoid You can unlock the Dug Popcorn Bucket by opening the A Squirrely Situation... letter from Gameloft in your mailbox or by completing all of Mirabel's event quests. This item was meant to be obtainable only by finishing all of Mirabel's tasks, but since they're quite tough to get done within the event timeframe, the devs sent the recipe and crafting resources to everyone. Mirabel does still have three event tasks you can tackle if you want to use this method for unlocking the Dug Popcorn Bucket. All of her quests are based on finding and interacting with critters around the valley. They're both the same item, but one can be placed around the valley while the other can be held by your character. If you want to collect all of the buckets featured in Parks Fest, there are plenty of other duties you need to finish. All of the other tasks you can complete to earn additional buckets are Mine Time!, Oh, Bother, Craftily Ever After, Destination: Imagination, A Shining Icon, and Stitch-y Situation. 16. Yu-Gi-Oh! Master Duel’s annual World Championship is fast approaching, which means the Road to Worlds campaign is underway. There are free log-in rewards, and you can compete in qualifying events for the opportunity to represent your region at the World Championship in Paris. If you don’t know about Yu-Gi-Oh! Master Duel, we can give you a quick rundown. It’s a free-to-play digital version of the popular Yu-Gi-Oh! trading card game, with more than 10,000 cards and including the evolutions the game has made over its more than 25 years of existence. It’s available across nearly all platforms — iOS, Android, PC, PS4/5, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S — and has cross-platform play, letting you Duel players of varying skill levels from all over the world. If that sounds intimidating, don’t worry. If you’re a new player or haven’t played in a while and need a refresher, there are in-game tutorials that teach you the basics of the game. Once you finish those tutorials, you get a base Deck to get started and can collect new cards as you progress through the game. The game also provides visual cues to let you know when you can execute combos and chain effects or respond to your opponent’s effects, helping make sure you don’t miss anything while you’re learning the game. You can continue practicing and getting better through Solo Mode, where you play through storylines and learn more about the lore behind the Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG. As you probably already know, the Yu-Gi-Oh! franchise extends across several pieces of media and is a big reason for the international popularity of the TCG. That combined with the competitive nature of the game has also made it popular with professional athletes, which you can see NBA player Grant Williams and professional football players Kris Jenkins and Ryan Hunter discuss in the videos below. Once you’ve gotten more comfortable with the game, you can move on to face your fellow Duelists. And now’s the time to jump in, since there will be free log-in rewards during the Road to Worlds event that can help you build up your Deck before taking on the qualifying events From now until July 3, you can get a series of daily rewards for a total of 1,000 gems, a profile icon, and a Red Supernova Dragon Card. You can get additional gems and rewards if you take part in the World Championship Qualifiers, which anyone can enter starting June 3. The initial qualifying round will last until June 12, with Duelists beginning at a different level depending on what rank they reached in May’s Season 41. But don’t worry, even if you didn’t take part in Season 41, you can still compete in the qualifiers, you’ll just start from Duel Level 1. Winning Duels will see you rise through the ranks, to a max of Duel Level 20. Anyone who reaches Duel Level 20 will then move on to Regionals between June 12–15, where the goal is simply to get as many points as possible by defeating other qualifying Duelists. The top performers in each region earn an invite to the World Championship in Paris, where they’ll compete for the grand prize. While the qualifying rounds and Championship are all single-player matches, the players who win and move on to Paris will also get the chance to team up with two other Duelists to take on the defending champions from the United States. There will be hundreds of thousands of Duelists of all skill levels from around the world competing during the Road to Worlds events. With so many active players and easily attainable in-game rewards, there won’t be a better time to start your journey in Yu-Gi-Oh! Master Duel. The game is free-to-play and there’s no entrance fee for the qualifying events, so there’s nothing stopping you from building a Deck and giving it a shot. For more information about Yu-Gi-Oh! Master Duel, including several tutorial videos to help you understand card types and strategies, you can visit the official website. 18. Nvidia's mega-expensive RTX Pro 6000 workstation GPU has been put to the test in Cyberpunk 2077, Star Wars Outlaws, and Assassin's Creed Mirage to see how this bulky GPU handles gaming despite not having any game-ready drivers. While the RTX 5090 comfortably remains the best graphics card you can buy for a traditional home gaming PC, heads were still turned when Nvidia revealed the RTX Pro 6000. One tech YouTuber, der8auer, has now put this workstation card to the test and found that it's more than capable for gaming, even if it might not be worth the $10,000 MSRP if this is your intent for it. 21. Hitman developer Io Interactive's James Bond game has been reannounced with a proper title, 007 First Light. It also has some new key art, which confirms some important Facts: unlike Hitman's depthless master mimic Agent 47, James Bond has hair, formed into a neat side-parting by the passage of a narrowly escaped bullet. He also has ears, a high-collared leather jacket, and a gun. Or what looks like a gun. He could be just doing a finger pistol to fake us out. I do not trust this particular James Bond. He is, after all, a cousin of Agent 47, that barcode-blazoned Fury peering out of every mirror. Io Interactive's James Bond doesn't even have a face right now. The face is hopefully forthcoming in the world premiere later this week, along with James Bond's legs and feet. Read more View the full article
