  4. Despite having received a plethora of updates, bits of DLC, and expansion packs over the course of the past 11 years, there are still things that featured in The Sims 3 that The Sims 4 is yet to receive. Seriously, The Sims 4 has been supported for twice the length of time The Sims 3 was, and yet it's only this year that it's getting a pack that features fairies. 7. Last week, electronics engineer Lorentio Brodesco announced the completion of a mock-up for nsOne, reportedly the first custom PlayStation 1 motherboard created outside of Sony in the console's 30-year history. The fully functional board accepts original PlayStation 1 chips and fits directly into the original console case, marking a milestone in reverse-engineering for the classic console released in 1994. Brodesco's motherboard isn't an emulator or FPGA-based re-creation—it's a genuine circuit board designed to work with authentic PlayStation 1 components, including the CPU, GPU, SPU, RAM, oscillators, and voltage regulators. The board represents over a year of reverse-engineering work that began in March 2024 when Brodesco discovered incomplete documentation while repairing a PlayStation 1. "This isn't an emulator. It's not an FPGA. It's not a modern replica," Brodesco wrote in a Reddit post about the project. "It's a real motherboard, compatible with the original PS1 chips." The new patch, which is built on more than a year of player feedback, includes better map generation, more responsive enemy AI, additional layers of strategic possibility, and a wealth of careful balance adjustments. With hundreds of changes listed, the Galactic Civilizations 4 Hyperlane Update is a major milestone for the latest instalment in the 22-year-old series, as it goes up against similarly large overhauls from the likes of Paradox's Stellaris. 9. The launch of the new Warhammer 40k Darktide class, the Arbites, is about to transform the dynamic of the grimdark co-op FPS. Fatshark's brutal, chaotic horde shooter is the futuristic, heavy-metal sibling to Vermintide 2, and despite some early teething problems it feels like it's now in a good spot. Steam reviews are positive, a big update is set to improve both progression and new-player onboarding, and now the first Darktide DLC is ready to unleash a fresh presence upon proceedings. I took an early look at the Arbites in action, and I can't wait for the full release. Read the rest of the story... 11. A newElden Ring Nightreign mod available for download will allow you to practice against all the bosses, including the eight Night Lords, without having to complete a long runback. Players should be aware, however, that incorrect use of the mod carries the risk of getting banned from playing the game. Nightreign's three-player-focused co-op roguelike has been delighting and frustrating fans since its release, and this mod aims to let players get the most out of the experience, but using it online will likely result in a permanent ban from the game. 13. MindsEye is a new third-person shooter from ex-Rockstar executive's studio, Build a Rocket Boy, and its release yesterday may be the most problematic and controversial launch of 2025. Developers at MindsEye have already issued several apologies for the state of the game at release, and it's hard to say if the game will be able to recover from such a rocky start. So far, it doesn't look very promising for MindsEye, and even with limited data from Metacritic reviews, the game's launch state is not going to be the last issue players face. View the full article
  14. Mindseye has experienced one of the more dramatic launches in videogames this year. As the first game from Build a Rocket Boy, a studio led by former Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Redemption producer Leslie Benzies, expectations were initially high for the project. When the game came out earlier this week, however, it made more of an impression for its many significant technical issues than it did for its approach to open-world action. Now, after several days of complaints, Build a Rocket Boy has issued a statement outlining a timeline for trying to get the game into better shape. Read the rest of the story... 15. Before The Forest, before The Long Dark, and back when Project Zomboid was still in its infancy, there was Don't Starve, the pioneering survival game by Klei. 12 years later, the original is still a Steam icon, boasting superlative reviews and thousands of daily players. But Don't Starve Together, the standalone multiplayer spin-off, is even more popular. Cruel, tough, and wonderfully stylized, one of the biggest icons of the entire survival genre is now even better thanks to a fresh, free update, which adds a new boss, ties off a long-running questline, and makes controller inputs much better. 17. There's a perfect balance between turning your brain off entirely, and keeping it somewhat idle. Where games like Civilization require all of your attention, cozy games like Stardew Valley let you cut down trees, smooch villagers, and generally soak up some much-needed good vibes. Two Point Hospital positions itself somewhere between the two, letting you manage the daily operations of a cartoon infirmary while presenting some challenge, but nothing too hardcore. If you're looking for a chill game to play during the summer holidays, or simply something new, you can pick it up for free on the Epic Games Store right now. Read the rest of the story... 18. I've said it before and I'll say it again: LA Noire is the best videogame ever made. Its magnificent storytelling, faithful historical setting, and treatment of veteran life in post-WWII America puts it head and shoulders above any RPG I've ever played - and the soundtrack certainly helps, too. But, last year, Critical Hit Games' Nobody Wants to Die came along, almost giving LA Noire a run for its money with its snazzy art-deco cyberpunk setting and brain-teasing mysteries. While it still doesn't touch Rockstar's epic, it's an absolute must play. Read the rest of the story... 19. It's going to be a long wait before we see a PCIe 6.0 gaming SSD, according to the head of SSD controller manufacturer Silicon Motion. In an interview, the company's founder and CEO, Wallace C. Kou, says that we're not going to get a PCIe 6.0 SSD "until 2030," with PCIe 5.0 SSDs providing the ceiling of storage performance in desktop PCs for the next five years. Silicon Motion makes the controllers for many of the best gaming SSD designs around right now, including the new super-fast WD ****** SN8100, which already gets close to saturating the PCIe 5.0 bus with its immense sequential read speed of 14,900MB/s. We've also already seen a PCIe 6.0 SSD demonstrated at Computex, but when it comes to PC gaming hardware, it looks as though there's not much interest in progressing to this new standard for SSDs.
