  1. The demo for Warhammer 40,000: Mechanicus 2 is now playable as part of Steam Next Fest, and to celebrate, developer Kasedo Games is giving away two Warhammer 40k faction collections worth at least $660 (£500) each. To be in with a chance of winning one of the two prize hampers - or one of eight runner-up prizes - all you need to do is complete a 40k-themed coloring sheet. Simple! Read the rest of the story... 2. Right now, the Magic: The Gathering fanbase is reeling after the reveal of the biggest bunch of Universes Beyond crossovers ever. From the three sets shown off at Atlanta, to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, to the recent Secret Lair drop that includes Furbies, Jaws, and Dwight from The Office, never has such a high quantity of disparate properties been injected into the game. It came as something of a shock; even, I think, to many fans who'd had no issues with UB in the past. Read the rest of the story... 3. OK, yes, Phantasmal Flames looks like a delicious slice of Pokémon TCG loveliness - but Obsidian Flames has always had a soft spot in my Charizard-loving heart. The third expansion of the Scarlet and Violet era never caught alight like it should've until the stock drought arrived, and, while it's hard to get products right now, you can grab the Pokémon Obsidian Flames booster bundle for $10 lower than the current market price (and 30 bucks less than Amazon is asking). 9. Once upon a time, when I was a bright-eyed, bushy-tailed university student, I wrote a dissertation on L.A. Noire. While my main focus was its portrayal of PTSD in 1940s America, it's the ending that sticks with me most. I, like many, found protagonist Cole Phelps to be thoroughly unlikable, even arrogant, yet the conclusion of his story still hits hard because he's so convincingly written. That sort of high-stakes, shocking storytelling is threaded throughout Expedition 33, one of the year's best RPGs, which arguably goes one step further by frontloading its most devastating surprise. Please note that this article contains major spoilers for both Expedition 33 and L.A. Noire. Tread lightly, expeditioner. Read the rest of the story... 10. Forgive us for talking about Everwind again. To paraphrase a great, blue-haired philosopher of our time, we just think it's neat. We're big Minecraft fans here at PCGamesN, and I personally played so much Skyrim when it released that my brain started leaking out of my ears and I nearly failed my exams. Luckily I scooped it back in and Fus-Roh-Dahed my results to eventually land this job, where I can tell you about this Skyrim-like RPG that uses a Minecraft aesthetic to great effect. Everything's come full circle, and I fully plan on abandoning my responsibilities once more in order to play Everwind's first demo, which is featured as a part of Steam Next Fest. 14. Crisol: Theater of Idols has been shown off at numerous past gaming events of late, and it's one I've had wishlisted for a while. Now, after playing its Steam Next Fest demo, I truly have high hopes for it. The horror FPS from Vermila Studios and publisher Blumhouse Games sets an awesome tone when it comes to its setting of Hispania, which is "a twisted version of Spain" that immediately evokes memories of BioShock's Rapture for me. Screenshot by Destructoid The gameplay is a slow-paced variant of any FPS you'd find nowadays, reminiscent of the newer Resident Evil titles, where you can shoot your way out of a situation, but the tension and horror of what lurks around each corner is what's most important. Puppet-like enemies stalk the area, and they take several bullets to finish off before being able to move on. The unique mechanic in Crisol is that your weaponry uses a very specific kind of ammunition: your blood. Reloading requires filling up your weapon with your own life-juice and HP, and as such, makes your health bar more of a valued resource than ever before. You can heal up with syringes found on the map or use some kind of power to drain the blood from dead humans or animals scattered about the area. The Resident Evil vibes really kick in towards the end of the demo when a massive, hulking contraption named Dolores shows up ready to hunt you down. You're forced to run and hide from her like Nemesis or Mr. X (or Songbird or a Big Daddy), navigating the streets of Hispania while cutting through chained-up doors with the tried and true RE trope bolt cutters. I think my favorite part of the demo, though, is that it does not waste your time with exposition. A lot of demos throw you into a cutscene immediately, and maybe it's just me, but I don't want that in a demo. Let me try the gameplay loop and then decide if I'm interested in the story first. Thankfully, playing through this interesting area of Crisol now has me wanting to know a lot more about the story and setting, as the 20-minute demo is just enough to whet your appetite for FPS horror without spoiling anything at all. Screenshot by Destructoid Crisol: Theater of Idols will launch on PC and consoles in early 2026, and thus far, it seems like it may be a sleeper hit to watch out for. You can try out the demo now during Steam Next Fest to see what the excitement is about. Like our content?
