Some of the folks who've been dedicating a good chunk of the week to watching some - or a lot - of Amazon's Fallout TV show, just as fans like you and me have, are people who've actually worked on the games. In fact, one of them, original Fallout co-creator Tim Cain, might have spotted a reference to that first game in the series that seemingly wasn't even explicity planned by the showrunners. Yep, amid the array of really interesting sets and dialogue exchanges you really should be paying attention to, the show might well have ended up with some little homages to the games that inspired it which weren't in the script. How? Well, thanks to some actors with a keen eye for improvising - the only question is what actually influenced that improv. In a new video on his very good YouTube channel that sees him discuss the show, Cain talks about attending the big Hollywood premiere for it - his invite came via a casual email from Todd Howard, you know, like we all get on the regular. As he describes around the ten minute mark, while watching the first two episodes as part of that, the developer spotted something and was immediately pretty sure he knew where it'd come from. Image: Nintendo In 2015, Nintendo released Super Mario Maker for the Wii U, a game that allowed players to make and share their own 2D Mario levels. In 2021, the company ended the ability to upload courses, the game having been eclipsed by its sequel on the Switch. But in January 2024, Nintendo announced an end to all online services for Wii U and Nintendo 3DS games on April 8th. For Super Mario Maker, that meant the millions of player-made levels would be unceremoniously shuttered. Or at least, it would have been unceremonious, if it weren’t for a group called Team 0%. The group had been trying to beat every uncleared level in the game for years, which was made easier once they had a fixed target in 2021. When the announcement came that the Wii U’s... Need anything from the shop? Mushroom milk? Fresh tarts? Mystical bejewelled skull? I'm just popping out to Dépanneur Nocturne, a lovely little game which came out in 2020 and I kept forgetting to post about. It's a small first-person explore-o-chatter set within a corner shop in a magical, mystical Montreal, full of things to admire, find, poke at, and chat about with the owner. And it'll only cost you about as much as a pint of semi-skimmed and loaf of Kingsmill from your own local shop. Read more View the full article
There are some advantages to being a medieval peasant. Twitter hasn't been invented yet, for instance, so your exposure to the worst opinions in the world is pretty limited. But there are, on balance, a lot more downsides. Healthcare is a tad iffy. You haven't got any central heating. Back-breaking labour is the norm. And, if you live in my Manor Lords village, you're probably getting really bored of eating eggs and stepping over corpses... Read more.View the full article

Back before the modern era of No Man's Sky, Starfield, Elite Dangerous, and Outer Wilds, the best space games on PC included '90s classics such as Star Wars: TIE Fighter and the Wing Commander series. Chris Roberts, the creator of the latter of those, would later go on to develop the massive, ambitious crowdfunded space sim Star Citizen - but before that he gave us Freelancer, a memorable narrative-driven adventure with a straightforward setup that unveils a mysterious alien threat as it progresses. Now, new Steam game Underspace has arrived as a spiritual successor to Freelancer, and following a successful initial launch its developer lays out its initial post-release update plans. Enlarge (credit: Aurich Lawson) [/url] In a deckbuilding game, you start out with a basic set of cards, then upgrade it over time, seeking synergies and compounding effects. Roguelikes are games where ****** happens quite often, but each randomized "run" unlocks options for the future. In both genres, and when they're fused together, the key is staying lean, trimming your deck and refining your strategy so that every card and upgrade works toward unstoppable momentum. “Lean” does not describe the current scene for roguelike deckbuilder games, but they certainly have momentum. As of this writing, Steam has 2,599 titles tagged by users with “deckbuilding” and 861 with “roguelike deckbuilder” in all languages, more than enough to feed a recent Deckbuilders Fest. The glut has left some friends and co-workers grousing that every indie game these days seems to be either a cozy farming sim or a roguelike deckbuilder. I, an absolute ******* for deckbuilders for nearly five years, wanted to know why this was happening. Read 37 remaining paragraphs | Comments View the full article

April 12, 2024: With the launch of the Fallout TV show, we're taking a trip down memory lane to reshare some of our classic Fallout coverage. This post was originally published on October 4, 2017. One of the most memorable quests in Fallout New Vegas is called Come Fly With Me, where you launch a rocket from the REPCONN test site. Once you have gathered the supplies needed to fix the missile, you are treated to a cutscene of the rocket blasting towards the sky, backed by Richard Wagner's rousing classical song, Ride of the Valkyries. Obsidian put extra effort into making this sequence look, sound, and feel as good as possible. Lead designer Josh Sawyer wanted to see how it looked for himself once it was finished. But, unfortunately, his viewing was rudely interrupted by a tap on the shoulder - an NPC really wanted to talk to him about bottlecaps. Read the rest of the story... The promised land of minute but mighty laptops with few compromises has never felt as fully realized as it does with the Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 (2024) sitting on my desk. While falling just shy of perfection, its minor flaws do little to get in the way of what's otherwise a superb system, inside and out. So much so, in fact, that alternatives have a hard time competing. Serving as my daily driver, I've been gaming away on the Asus Zephyrus G14 for just a little under a month. In that time, it's more than proven itself as the best gaming laptop I've used in this particular form factor. Its size naturally comes with some constraints, which mainly affect performance and price, but this squeeze is barely noticeable, as this laptop it never fails to keep its cool both metaphorically and under load. I tried to look up the plot of Bore Blasters, because my focus when playing the game is entirely on exploding dirt, but it turns out the Steam store page doesn't bother to explain any kind of plot either. Thus, the purity of Bore Blasters. Some facts can be divined from the earth, though: you play a dwarf, piloting a small ship akin to Robotnik's flying hedghog *******, and are dropped off on a small, discrete, gem-bearing chunk of dirt. This you pulverise, in a downward direction, with the aim of finding a huge chest of gems at the bottom somewhere. Your drill is the machine **** on your ship, your efforts governed by about two minutes worth of depleting fuel and a hull that can take three hits total. It's cyberpunk by Gimli.
