  1. Survivor-likes, bullet-heaven horde-games are everywhere after Vampire Survivors showed up and now one developer is attempting to do the same with a typing game in Glyphica: Typing Survival. Read the full article here: [Hidden Content] View the full article
  2. Following last week’s big news that Microsoft was shutting down several studios under its umbrella and all of the interesting things its executives have said since that point, folks have dusted off old documentary clips that they reckon illustrate some of the issues with how Xbox handles the studios it buys. As a refresher, MS recently made headlines due to the pretty shocking decision to shut down a bunch of Xbox studios, including Hi-Fi Rush maker Tango Gameworks and Redfall developer Arkane Austin. Especially given just how good the first of those is, it’s a move that’s unsurprisingly left a lot of folks pretty miffed. Enter a clip from Double Fine PsychOdyssey, the making-of documentary series that follows Double Fine’s efforts to make Psychonauts 2, and includes some interesting sections about the aftermath of Microsoft’s acquisition of the studio in 2019. The main section that’s caught people’s eye sees Xbox’s Matt ******, who’s caught a lot of flak for some of his statements around this latest batch of cuts. Read more View the full article
  3. Now, straight up, let me just say, I might be in love with the BenQ X500i. It's true, I've tested a huge amount of projectors and monitors in my time, but the X500i hits the sweet spot for pretty much everything. Price, performance, image quality, form factor, it ticks all the boxes. It's perfectly balanced, and if you're looking for one of the best gaming projectors with 4K out there right now, there's no doubt in my mind that this could well be it. It's close to convincing me that I need to sling my 21:9 ultrawide monitor away for good, it's that impressive. It's not flawless. It has a few minor issues, but on the whole, for a fairly respectable $1699/£1,499 fee, what you're getting for that investment is seriously epic. Let's take a step back for a moment though. If you're new to the projector scene, I'm guessing your first question is going to be "Well why?", why get a projector to begin with? It is without a doubt, a luxury item. If you've already picked up the best gaming monitor, then going for something like a projector isn't warranted. These are halo products, for nerd dens, and evenings with your buds or your family, sitting back, enjoying your beverage of choice, and just crashing out with a bit of casual gaming, or movie entertainment on a 150-inch display. It is, just such an absolutely enjoyable thing to be able to do. Before you make this your primary display for all things, bear in mind you will still find better specs with dedicated gaming monitors and displays. After all, projection has come a long way, but so too have PC screens, and it's hard to compete with the refresh rates, ****** accuracy, and pixel densities dished out by some of the latest and greatest OLED tech. But, both of these products are designed with very different use cases in mind, and that's ok. One thing to add, like most things in the PC space, the more you invest, usually, the better the product. But there is a sweet spot, that some (not all) projectors inhabit, and thankfully I can say the X500i sits itself in that gap quite nicely. Read the rest of the story... 4. Team Spirit and CS2 star player donk made the spotlight in February after winning IEM Katowice. The 17-year-old shocked the world with his skills, but it’s no wonder he’s so good considering his staggering practice regime. Being a pro player is no easy feat. Spirit undergo daily in-game training and theory sessions. But that’s not enough for donk, who says he put an exhausting amount of time into extra solo practice. View the full article
  5. Square Enix has announced a significant company reboot amid tumbling profits. Reporting its financial performance for the financial year ending March 31, 2024, sales in the Digital Entertainment segment, which includes video games, rose by 2.6% but profit fell by 15.8%. This despite the ***** of Final Fantasy 16, Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster, Foamstars, and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. Specifically on HD games, the subcategory Square Enix uses to encompass all the above games, the company saw a significant operating loss of ¥8.1 billion (approximately $51.9 million). Final Fantasy 16 and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth both launched as PlayStation 5 exclusives, and while Square Enix has announced a sales figure for Final Fantasy 16, it has yet to do so for Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, the second game in the company’s trilogy of Final Fantasy 7 remakes. In its financial report, all Square Enix would say is it has suffered from an “incomplete journey to better profitability in HD game development”, and that it had “launched many titles but some ******* to live up to profit expectations, especially outsourced titles and some AAA titles.” It seems likely Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, at least, is included in that. In response to the tumbling profits, Square Enix announced what it calls “Square Enix Reboots, and Awakens”, a three-year plan for rebooting for long-term growth. This involves a rethink across all parts of the business, but the highlight is a “shift to a multiplatform strategy." Square Enix said it will “aggressively pursue a multiplatform strategy that includes Nintendo platforms, PlayStation, Xbox, and PCs.” Note the wording here of “Nintendo platforms”, with Nintendo set to announce its Switch successor console before April 2025. As part of this multiplatform push, Square Enix said it will "build an environment where more customers can enjoy our titles in regards to major franchises and AAA titles including catalog titles." The suggestion in all this is mainline Final Fantasy games will ditch PlayStation exclusivity going forward, although Square Enix has yet to announce specifics beyond Final Fantasy 16's upcoming launch on PC. There’s also a shift from quantity to quality, Square Enix said, and a bid to deliver “ensured fun.” Square Enix has been accused of pumping out too many Final Fantasy games in too short a timeframe, so perhaps this means the release of major Final Fantasy games will be spaced out a bit more. Overall, it’s a tough time for Square Enix, which had already absorbed ¥22.1 billion (approx $140.9 million) in what it called “content abandonment losses” ahead of today’s financial report. Square Enix did not name the canceled or rescoped in-development titles. Looking ahead, Dawntrail, the expansion for ongoing MMO Final Fantasy 14, launches in late June. Square Enix also has Kingdom Hearts 4, the third game in the Final Fantasy remake trilogy, and Dragon Quest 12 in the works. In February, Square Enix director and president Takashi Kiryu reportedly told analysts about plans to create a new company structure following falling sales in its digital entertainment business, despite the release of Final Fantasy 16 in June. Square Enix said the PS5 exclusive sold three million copies during launch week. A PC port is in the works. In January, Final Fantasy 16 producer Naoki Yoshida said it might be time for a younger generation to lead the franchise and helm Final Fantasy 17. Wesley is the *** News Editor for IGN. 8. Another Crab's Treasure is firmly in the sights of speedrunners, with one dedicated player hitting credits in less than 40 minutes. The game - which usually takes around 13 hours to beat if you're focused on main objectives alone - finds itself at this sweet spot where folks are really nailing down the fastest routes. The speedrunner in question is LilAggy, a Soulslike player and content creator who specialises in speedrunning and challenge runs for various games in that subgenre. They've been taking a ****** at Another Crab's Treasure ever since the game released late April, and have finally managed to whittle a run down to the sub-40 minute mark. You can watch the run yourself here, via a Twitch recording of LilAggy's run. It has a bunch of cool little details that should appeal to the speed freaks out there. This includes specific "lines" that allow players to maintain momentum between objectives, as well as various techniques that allow LilAggy to move at max speed for as long as possible. If you're just interested in the major stuff though, I recommend watching the Inkerton skip at roughly the 28 minute mark, as well as the Camtshca skip at 31:50 (aka the bubble boost). 9. The days of Square Enix making loads of medium-budget games might be over, as it outlines its new medium-term business plan. Square Enix might not be a developer that always hits it out of the park, but you can't say that it doesn't have a pretty broad portfolio. Only problem is, even with its tentpoles like Final Fantasy, its games never quite seem to meet its expectations. Just last month it was reported that the developer had to take a $140 million loss as it cancelled several games. Now, Square Enix has shared its new medium-term business plan for the fiscal years 2025-2027, and it sounds like some big changes are being planned. For one, as odd a plan as it might sound given it does release games on various platforms, Square Enix will be moving to a multiplatform strategy. "For HD titles, the Group will aggressively pursue a multiplatform strategy that includes Nintendo platforms, PlayStation, Xbox, and PCs," writes Square Enix. "Especially, in regards to major franchises and AAA titles including catalog titles, it will build an environment where more customers can enjoy our titles." Essentially, it sounds like it wants to be able to bring more of its titles to various platforms, where currently certain games might only release on the Switch or PS5. It went on to mention mobile titles, writing, "it will also devise a platform strategy for SD titles that includes not only iOS and Android, but also the possibility of PC launches." 12. Following a glorious VCT Americas win, star VALORANT IGL Kelden “Boostio” Pupello has reignited an old banter he initiated with Nadeshot on X (formerly Twitter), reminding the 100 Thieves boss of a much-deserving “thank you” that was never said. In a tweet on May 12, Boostio uploaded a clip of him placing the 2024 VCT Americas Split prize in the trophy cabinet at 100 Thieves’ boot camp and tagged Nadeshot with a proud “You’re welcome.” But the banter isn’t as simple as it looks. 13. Some fresh astral **** trivia from my accidental molar expedition a few weeks back: each of the Maw's teeth is different. Some form a fractal baleen network of crosshatched layers disappearing backward into the vanishing point; others are shaped like lockpicks, raccoon heads and semi-detached houses. This week's new game releases are no less motley and misshapen, though thankfully not quite as heavily varnished with plaque: there's something in the shop for everyone, I think. 14. While NRG might have a trophy, everyone who partook in last weekend’s David’s Cup is a winner, with organizer Nouns Esports and the Counter-Strike 2 community banding together to raise over $10,000 in the memory of the late David “cynic” Polster. The community raised $12,640 during David’s Cup for the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), smashing Nouns’ original $5,000 target. “Thank you to all the production, talent, and people who made this event possible: Us at nouns can’t thank you enough for making this happen and honoring David and his life,” the org said in a May 12 tweet. 15. The reigning world champion T1 are in a pickle after losing to BLG at MSI 2024. AD carry Gumayusi says the team has to undergo a “complete overhaul” or they might lose to their next opponent, Team Liquid. In an interview with Korizon’s Ashley Kang on May 12, Gumayusi said, “I think we might win easily if we can do what we do best, but if we go into the series against TL without patching our weaknesses, I also think we might end up losing,” reflecting on T1’s immediate need for preparations to gear up for their upcoming do-or-**** MSI series. 16. After Hades 2 shadow dropped in early access on May 6, The Rogue Prince of Persia developer, Evil Empire, admitted it’s “not prideful enough” to be able to compete with such a title, which is why its delayed PoP until the end of May. Although the delayed release of Rogue PoP isn’t the best news, fans empathize and praise Evil Empire for its “wise and understandable decision” about delaying the release date, even though the dev is confident in its upcoming roguelite. 17. Fallout 4‘s next-gen update may have come with a substantial offering of free Creation Club content, but it doesn’t cover everything. The Manwell Rifle Creation is among those that are still premium, adding two powerful rifles that remain viable into the endgame… albeit with a few hoops to jump through. If you’ve already put the credits down, actually getting your hands on the paired weapons will involve perception, patience and a whole lot of Nuka-Cola Quantum. Interestingly, this is one of the only Creation Club mini-quests to offer a choice at the end, although the consequences aren’t exactly significant or far-reaching. View the full article

His organization BLEED Esports cited “health reasons” as the reason behind yay’s decision and pledged its support for the 25-year-old star. This is the second time yay has taken a hiatus from VALORANT while at BLEED; after joining the team in September 2023, he stepped back in early December just before the VALORANT ONE Pro Invitational, also due to “unforeseen health issues.” View the full article

  21. Welcome to yet another week of paying a little for a lot. The Microsoft and PlayStation stores are starting to warm up with a bunch of decent sales events—the pick of which are represented below. I'm also keeping an eye on Amazon for any sign of extraordinarily early EOFY deals as well. Not much doing there. But I'll be ready to holler if and when they appear. In retro news, I'm celebrating the 32nd birthday of Street Fighter II: Champion Edition, a game whose industry impact cannot be overstated. Obviously, 1991's World Warrior was the opening jab, but the Champion Edition revision was a $2.3 billion knockout cross that put Capcom in the top three highest grossing arcade games of all time list. Nineties gaming gromets like myself queued outside of arcades for the $1 privilege to play this, thanks to its mirror match permissiveness, playable bosses, balance tweaks, and more unique takes on Ryu and Ken.
