  1. Nintendo announced today that it's acquiring Shiver Entertainment, the company behind the Nintendo Switch ports of Hogwarts Legacy, Mortal Kombat 1, and more. The company said in a press release that it's entered an agreement with Embracer to buy 100% of the outstanding shares of the Miami-based Shiver, making it a wholly owned subsidiary. Shiver was founded in 2012 and since then, Nintendo notes, "has partnered with publishers and developers through commissions for large scale title developments." It was acquired by Embracer Group in 2021. "By welcoming Shiver’s experienced and accomplished development team, Nintendo aims to secure high-level resources for porting and developing software titles," the announcement reads. "Going forward, even after it becomes a part of the Nintendo group, Shiver’s focus will remain the same, continuing commissions that port and develop software for multiple platforms including Nintendo Switch." The announcement comes a couple of weeks after Nintendo confirmed that it'll reveal its Switch successor console "within this fiscal year" - so, sometime before March 31, 2025. There's no mention of the Switch successor (what's largely been referred to as the Switch 2) in today's announcement, but it's still a potentially telling announcement as Nintendo gears up to unveil its future plans. As mentioned, Shiver's known for ports like Hogwarts Legacy, Mortal Kombat 11, and Mortal Kombat 1, as well as developing Scribblenauts Showdown. Some of its ports, like Hogwarts Legacy and Mortal Kombat 11, have gone over well enough, although its Mortal Kombat 1 port was widely criticized. Financial terms were not disclosed in the announcement, but Nintendo noted that the acquisition "will have only a minor effect on Nintendo’s results for this fiscal year." 12. Enlarge / A better monitor refresh rate might help with all that motion blurring... (credit: Getty Images) [/url] Just a couple of years ago, companies like Nvidia were talking up prototype 500 Hz gaming monitors as having "benefits [for] every game and gamer, not just competitive games and esports *****." Now, the high frame rate experts at Blur Busters bring word of a 4K, 1,000 Hz prototype screen being shown off by ******** panel maker TCL CSOT at the manufacturer-focused DisplayWeek 2024 conference. TCL's proof-of-concept panel is all the more impressive for not sacrificing resolution in the name of its high frame rate—many current 480 Hz monitors tend to top out at 1080p resolutions or offer "dual mode" options for higher resolutions at lower maximum refresh rates. And while recent advancements in pixel-flipping times have enabled TCL's LCD prototype, Blur Busters estimates that 1,000 Hz OLED displays could be commercialized as soon as 2027. 4K 1000Hz being shown off at #DisplayWeek2024 by TCL CSOT [Hidden Content] — Blur Busters (@BlurBusters) May 15, 2024 The apparent, impending breaking of the four-digit refresh rate threshold got us thinking: Are we finally approaching a point of diminishing returns in monitor-makers' long-running battle of the Hz? Or is 1,000 Hz just the latest stepping stone to realms of motion smoothness yet unimagined by most gamers? Read 5 remaining paragraphs | Comments View the full article

  16. When you purchase a game, you want to make the most out of it. However, some video games take so long to fully clear, it might not be worth it. Players in one Reddit thread have gathered to name precisely those games, in which 100-percent completion could take a decade. One prime example shared in the thread, posted today, is Final Fantasy 14. It took one player over 10 years to obtain the game’s 2,751 achievements, with a few of the individual ones requiring months to complete. “One of the achievements requires carefully catching one each of over 1,200 species of fish,” a player in the thread explained. “Some fish only spawn once every real-time month.” Another example is the Stanley Parable, which requires players to not launch the game for five years to obtain a single achievement.
