Drop Bear Bytes, the studio behind post-apocalyptic RPG Broken Roads, are named after Australia’s deadliest creature. The Drop Bear might look like a normal koala, but they’re actually dangerous predators, fond of jumping from trees to maul unsuspecting chumps who forget to take adequate precautions, like urinating on themselves. Really, the story is a wind-up the aussies like to blag tourists with. If it looks like a koala, it’s just a koala. But it’s this sort of character, inspired by love for Australia’s unique landscape, culture and good-natured mick-taking, that forms the heart of the best bits in Broken Roads. I say ‘best bits’, but I should probably say ‘the only bits that I actually enjoyed’, unfortunately. ****** wiped out 80% of Australia’s population, and left the remaining nail-hard Nancys and tough Tobiases to fend for themselves in a world short of resources, but shockingly plentiful in both guns and pre-made Vegemite sarnies. You’ll pick one of four character classes - I went with ‘Jackaroo’ (cattle hand), because it was called ‘Jackaroo’ - before tackling a short tutorial section. You'll then be thrust into some events, where you’ll meet the rest of your starting party and kick off the game proper. Read more View the full article
Last week I went to a screening of Amazon and Bethesda's Fallout TV show, a spin-off yarn starring Ella Purnell (who voiced Jinx in the Arcane Netflix adaptation) as a recently surfaced Vault Dweller, scouring the irradiated wastelands for [SPOILERS REDACTED]. It's early days, but the show's first two episodes didn't make a massive impression on me, though I will concede that the sight of Amazon's branding on Fallout's infamous Please Stand By emergency broadcast titlecard makes a dangerous amount of sense. "New videogame adaptation turns out not to be absolute catshit" isn't really headline news any more, is it? After Castlevania and The Last of Us and so on, the idea that a game adaptation might be good has stopped being shocking. Even Werewolves Within, the horror-comedy movie loosely based on Ubisoft's VR version of the social deduction game Werewolf, turned out great. Fallout isn't coming into a world where it's unbelievable that a videogame show might be worth watching. I'm just glad it doesn't buck the trend... Read more.View the full article

The world of Fallout is one where miniaturization and sleek, modern technology never happened. Machines and computers are clunky and creaky. Guns feel like they could burst at the seams at any moment. Likewise, Frostpunk - and of course Frostpunk 2 - capture a dystopian steampunk future where even the most basic life-preserving actions require mountains of coal and steel. It's heavy, dank, and oppressive. You take that aesthetic and combine it with the isometric, party-based exploration and narrative of Baldur's Gate 3, and you get this gorgeous new RPG game, that's just got a new trailer and is heading soon to Steam. A dedicated Far Cry 5 player is using the game's map editor to recreate the iconic Whiterun from The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim. YouTuber Mojo Swoptops shared a short video of their work so far, where they walk through the main street of their Whiterun recreation. Starting at the entrance to the city, they walk past The ******** Huntsman, Warmaiden's, and Breezehome before arriving in the marketplace, where The Bannered Mare, Belethor's General Goods, and Severio Pelagia's house are all on show. "I decided not to replicate it 1:1 and instead have some fun using some of the other interesting assets I have at my disposal," Mojo Swoptops said in the description. "So far I am happy with the progress, but nothing can match the quality and art direction of the original Bethesda product." While it's just the main street at the moment, this Whiterun recreation will seemingly include the entire city one day. Mojo Swoptops shared the creation on Reddit too, where one user asked: "Have you built the Cloud District yet? Oh, what am I saying. Of course you haven't," a reference to the infamous Whiterun resident Nazeem. Despite the joke, Mojo Swoptops assured they were already working on this part of Whiterun and they'd share more when it was finished. It's not the first Skyrim location Mojo Swoptops has worked to recreate either, as another video shows their rendition of the Thieves Guild's base of operations Riften. With The Elder Scrolls 6 still five years away at least, fans have had to find their own ways, like this, to keep the ageing Skyrim entertaining. Another player recently accrued a 267,000 gold bounty murdering 5,000 NPCs in a quest to ***** "everything that was killable", for example, while one fan recreated the game in Age of Empires 2. Waves of sentimental fans recently booted up their old Xbox 360s and PlayStation 3s to "retire" their original characters too, showing how much Skyrim has remained in player consciousness over its 12 years of being available. In our 9/10 review of the beloved RPG, IGN said: "Skyrim is a rare kind of intensely personal, deeply rewarding experience, and one of the best role-playing games yet produced." Patch 14.8 for League of Legends is on its way, and the community already got a few first glimpses at the upcoming changes. While they’re mostly exciting, players are afraid one change makes Mordekaiser overpowered. On April 10, one of the main League developers at Riot Games, Matt “Phroxzon” Leung-Harrison, revealed the detailed list of changes coming in Patch 14.8. The “adjustments” category includes changes to Mordekaiser, whose Q and his R are being buffed to have lower cooldowns. Additionally, enemies won’t be able to Cleanse his R, while his E is getting a minor nerf. Many fans think this is way too strong a tweak, and the top laner could quickly get out of hand. The registrations for Zenless Zone Zero’s Technical Test are now open, but interested players need to act fast to ensure they have a chance at testing out the new game created by HoYoverse. Zenless Zone Zero, also referred to as ZZZ, is an action RPG set in a post-apocalyptic urban fantasy world. In it, players take on the role of a Proxy, which is the main protagonist and their role is somewhat similar to the Traveler’s from Genshin Impact. Like most of HoYoverse’s titles, this is a gacha, where players obtain new characters to add to their team comps. View the full article

Hello there, Destiny 2 people. Bungie's just dropped a huge update on its plans for the game's much-hyped next big expansion, the Final Shape, and there's a lot of stuff to unpack. For example, there's a new sublclass, Prismatic, which looks like it'll basically let you revamp how all of the game's existing classes play, as well as, er, achieve the enlightement required to lob some new grenades. Given the news that came out about Bungie late last year and the delay Destiny 2’s The Final Shape was hit with as part of all of that, it's fair to say the expansion's got a fair amount riding on it. So, what's the plan? Well, casually letting you achieve "Transcendence" for one. If you missed the big gameplay preview coving both stuff that'll be included in The Final Shape and the two month-long Into the Light update that kicked off in the game yesterday, arguably the biggest highight was the former's Prismatic subclass. What is it? Well, as Bugie desribes it: "For the first time, Guardians who harness Prismatic will be able to mix and match Arc, Solar, Void, Stasis, and Strand—combining them to unlock new potential in power and customization." The Witcher has moved far beyond its core collection of books and games, with a Netflix show, official manga, tabletop game, and even a cookbook all on offer, but now it's even showing up in language learning app Duolingo. Spotted by Reddit user GeraltAndYennefer, one of the questions in Duolingo's Finnish course asks for a translation of the phrase: The bride is a woman and the groom is a hedgehog. "Is this a Witcher reference?", the Reddit user asked. IGN has confirmed with Duolingo that this is indeed a deep cut nod to the beloved fantasy series, specifically to the short story A Question of Price, which was adapted for TV in Season 1 Episode 4 of the Netflix series. The Witcher protagonist Geralt of Rivia attends a banquet hosted by Queen Calanthe of Cintra in the story, who's likely more familiar to fans as Ciri's grandmother. Ciri isn't born at this point though, as the story actually tells the tale of her parents' betrothal. Myriad suitors have travelled to Cintra to try and win the hand of Princess Pavetta, Ciri's mother, but through a complex series of events, it's a masked knight called Duny who Pavetta chooses. Duny is exposed to be cursed, however, which essentially turns him into a hedgehog monster at night. But Geralt saves the day and the princess and the hedgehog become engaged, thus the Duolingo reference. "Duolingo is somewhat notorious for odd and funny sentences in our courses, but there's real learning value behind them," a Duolingo spokesperson told IGN. "And at times we've deliberately inserted anime, gaming, or other pop culture references into our content, to help connect language learning with people's passions and interests." This includes adding the entire High Valyrian language from Game of Thrones to their app, alongside a Crunchyroll partnership which offers anime specific ********* lessons. The Witcher is plenty busy too, of course. Video game developer CD Projekt Red has several projects in development including the first game of a new trilogy, a multiplayer game with a wider appeal than the typical role playing games, and a remake of the original Witcher in Unreal Engine 5. Season 4 of the Netflix show is due to begin production in spring 2024 too, though without its leading man as Henry Cavill walked away from the series. Liam Hemsworth will instead take on the Geralt of Rivia role as the witcher looks to reunite his family but makes a new one along the way. Elsewhere, a new book from original author Andrzej Sapkowski is expected in early 2025, another board game based on The Witcher called Path of Destiny is in development, and Netflix is creating a new anime film with Geralt's video game voice actor Doug Cockle at the helm. Ryan Dinsdale is an IGN freelance reporter. He'll talk about The Witcher all day. View the full article

Given how many characters one can meet in Stardew Valley, those who might struggle to make friends will want to check out a new mod that makes the process easier but no less rewarding. While it may not appear like it at first glance, ConcernedApe's farming RPG has some exceptional story moments that go a long way to grounding players within Pelican Town, bringing villages' denizens to life. These "Heart Events" take plenty of time and effort to see and only occur once in a playthrough, so players need to be confident in their responses. View the full article

World of Warcraft Classic Season of Discovery phase three dropped on April 4, and players are slowly getting into the Sunken Temple raid. Raid compositions are crucial, especially this early in the patch. One faction has the upper hand when clearing Sunken Temple, and it’s because of a SoD ability. More and more players have been complaining on WoW’s subreddit about Shamanistic Rage, a Shaman ability that reduces damage taken and refunds mana to them and their raid. What makes Shamanistic Rage so amazing is that, unlike other abilities in WoW Classic, it applies to all your raid members and not only players in your party. While the Shaman gets the full effect from this ability, others get 20 percent of their mana this player got from this source. View the full article

As we all know, the main reason you go to war - in real life or in Helldivers 2 - isn't because you actually believe in the cause, it's because you're hoping to bag a nice medal and a pat on the head from some commander after watching your mates ****. Thankfully, due to some recent issues with medals in Arrowhead's online shooter, it looks like the entire system that brings such rewards to you will be getting an overhaul soon. If you're out of the loop, when it's come to folks actually getting the medals they've earned by fighting valiantly in major orders and not just goofing around having snowball fights, there's sometimes been a bit of a delay in that actually happening. The game's developers, though, look to have a plan to sort it permanently. Taking to the game's official Discord server, community manager Twinbeard provided an update for those still yet to recieve some of their spoils from recent campaigns. "Medals for two of the latest three major orders have now been shipped," the write, adding that the last batches should drop some time today, April 10. Read more View the full article

Oh dear, another Game of Thrones spin-off is no longer in development at HBO, this time the one set to focus on Jon Snow. With Game of Thrones having been as successful as it was, it's no surprise that HBO would want to capitalise on that as much as possible. Unfortunately for the network, it's only actually managed to get one show off the ground so far, House of the Dragon, whose second season is due out this summer. And now, in an interview with Screen Rant, Jon Snow actor Kit Harington has confirmed that the sequel series starring his character is no longer in the works. "I hadn't really ever spoken about it, because it was in development," Harington said. "I didn't want it leaked out that it was being developed, and I didn't want the thing to happen where people kind of start theorising, getting either excited about it or hating the idea of it, when it may never happen. Because in development, you look at every angle, and you see whether it's worth it. Read more View the full article
