The recent release of a creation club for Starfield - delivering content from Bethesda and modders for purchasable credits as the studio's previously done with Skyrim and Fallout 4 - drew a lot of backlash from players. Bethesda's Todd Howard has now addressed the controversy and indicated that the studio could be looking at making some changes to the initiative going forwards. If you're out of the loop, the big sticking point with this iteration of Bethesda's ever-polarising attempts to intergrate some form of add-on system that allows for 'paid mods' was the pricing, especially when it came to one Trackers Alliance quest. With that second quest based around the faction being behind the paywall, while the first Trackers Alliance mission was given out for free, some players were annoyed that it looked like they'd be paying a lot more for this and upcoming Trackers Alliance content than they might otherwise do if it was all released as one DLC pack. In an interview with YouTuber MrMattyPlays, game director Todd Howard was asked about this controversy, and responded by suggesting the studio will be looking into potentially revising how it proces and packages creation club content in light of the backlash. "Two's company, three's a crowd," the saying goes, unless the first two are warriors and the third one is a priest, in which case the superior proverb is surely "three's a moderately balanced squad, two's a massive liability"? Here to put such kitchen wisdom to the test is BioWare's Dragon Age: The Veilguard, which "only" allows you to bring two companions into the fray, one fewer than 2014's Dragon Age: Inquisition. It's another indication that this will be more biffy action game than thinky party-based RPG. The upside, assuming you find that last sentence disappointing, is that exploration and combat will be more "intimate", and individual characters will have more screentime to bounce off each other and flourish as personalities. All this comes care of a BioWare Discord Q&A from late last week, which you can watch in full below. Read more View the full article

League of Legends esports might soon be facing a scarcity of young, talented players at a grassroots level, and Gen.G’s CEO wonders the reasons behind its decline. “People in the know are getting pretty worried about the lack of talent pipeline for League, even in Korea,” Gen.G CEO Arnold Hur said on X (formerly Twitter) on June 17. “By talent pipeline, I mean at the ******** level, before they even get a CL [Challengers League] roster spot and become a star like Quid, Delight, or our very own Peyz,” reflecting the shortage of players isn’t restricted to a specific region. The issue is also present in Korea, a region with an impressive international tournament track record. View the full article

This once verdant ground is now wrecked by the passage of time. My terrible nemesis looms before me, inevitable and devastating. Many have fallen to it, but I will overcome. Oh, Elden Ring? I was talking about male pattern baldness. It will eventually ******** all that was once beautiful about my hairline, but at least I’ll have five fancy new hairdos to pick from when the open world RPG’s newest free update releases this Thursday, 20th of June. There’s also some QOL tweaks to inventory management and summoning pools, but I can’t wear those, can I? Read more View the full article

Over the past few years, Atari has been completely revamping its portfolio by releasing new takes on classic games like Missile Command, Centipede, and Asteroids. The latest project in this endeavor is Yars Rising, a new take on a name that – despite its success in 1982 – likely won’t engender many nostalgic feelings nowadays. The team at WayForward seems to have understood this from the jump, however, as Yars Rising isn’t a new take on the original game; it’s a full-fledged Metroidvania that happens to involve the old Yars gameplay once in a while. It’s a bold and risky choice, but based on the hands-on time we got at Summer Game Fest, it’s one that may have paid off. The demo begins with a neat-looking motion comic cutscene, which lays the groundwork for who the main character Yars is and what she’s about. The comic format isn’t just a style choice; game director James Montagna tells us as we watch that the original game came packed with a comic as a means to tell its expanded lore, and the team wanted to honor that here. Destiny 2 Episode: Echoes brought us an updated Nessus, more loot, and new activities. While the season started strong, players found a flaw in the new Breach Executable activity—and unfortunately, it’s nothing new for Destiny 2. On June 15, Destiny 2 players on Reddit highlighted a “continuing issue with activity design” that shows in the latest Breach Executable activity. In this activity, you must clear Vex and complete objectives throughout multiple arenas, leading to a final boss ******. But the game doesn’t tell you there are optional things you can do for extra loot. View the full article
If you're looking forward to digging into Starfield's Shattered Space expansion when it arrives later this year, you're in luck, as Todd Howard's now confirmed that Bethesda's got a second bit of DLC plenned in to follow it. Also, it sounds like BGS has adopted an approach to Shattered Space that should deliver something which won't involve visits to a bunch of barren, boring moons. As its first proper trailer at the Xbox Showcase earlier this month confirmed, Shattered Space is all about House Va'ruun - the faction of giant space snake worshippers that a lot of folks were hoping the studio would do more with. While we'd gotten a taste of the overall theme, Howard's now provided some details as to what to expect from the expansion on a practical level. In an interview with YouTuber MrMattyPlays, the developer revealed that developement work began in earnest on Shattered Space once the studio had released the base game. He went on to outline that one of the things that Bethesda "liked about [the DLC] from the get-go" is that once you reach House Va'ruun's home planet, "the bulk" of the expansion takes place there. Loot Reborn may be one of Diablo 4’s most successful seasons yet. It’s largely been well-received by players. Though it doesn’t bring any major new content to the game, the systemic and mechanical changes it implemented have clearly made players stick around for longer. Part of that success is owed to the Public Test Realm (PTR), which Blizzard brought to Diablo 4 for the first time prior to the launch of Season 4. And, it looks like the developer wants to do the same with Season 5. Read more View the full article
While most people consider mods a departure from any game’s intended experience, Hidetaka Miyazaki said FromSoftware doesn’t oppose co-op mods, even though Elden Ring wasn’t designed with full co-op in mind. In an interview with PC Gamer on June 16, Elden Ring creator Miyazaki shared his opinions on the popular “Seemless Co-op” mod and co-op play in general, confirming he and his team like the add-on. “We definitely don’t actively oppose players who want to experience the game together,” he said. Beloved friends, hated enemies - last week, we let the side down. Due to a shortage of hands at the pump and persistent clouds of Geoff Keighley activity, there was no weekly Maw liveblog, and this has bred disaster. Shaken, stirred and finally ignited for want of two-sentence updates about Dragon Age, the Maw emitted a full 13% of its cosmo-puissance into Mundus and took a grievous ***** out of the ailing and fearful lasagne of reality itself. A lot of Elden Ring players like to use a seamless co-op mode to help make playing with friends less of a pain, and director Hidetaka Miyazaki says that's ok with him. To say that playing online with your buds in FromSoftware games isn't the simplest thing in the world is possibly a bit of an understatement. You can't just send a request to your friend and stay playing together without any interruptions (bar internet troubles), instead you need to summon one another with certain items. If one of you *****, you have to do that all over again, so it's not exactly a smooth experience. That's why Elden Ring's seamless co-op mod exists, just to make playing with your friends a little bit easier. And in a recent interview with PC Gamer, Miyazaki was asked about his thoughts on the mod, and that particular way of experiencing the game. "It's definitely not something we actively oppose or want to downplay, wanting to go through the whole game together," Miyazaki responded. "In terms of where we were with Elden Ring, it was simply a case of wanting that more loose, casual style - drop in, defeat a boss, drop out. It doesn't put any technical restrictions on the player, it just sort of lets them complete this focus and then move on, so to speak." Essentially, if you ask FromSoftware, you're in the clear (though hopefully publisher Bandai Namco doesn't have any intention of getting rid of the mid, given previous actions towards Tekken mods). Pokémon Go director Michael Steranka teased the future of the popular mobile game, including the long-awaited addition of Sword and Shield’s Galar Pokémon in a new interview. The addition of new Pokémon to Pokémon Go has slowed significantly in the game’s recent history, a fact that Steranka himself admits to and even confidently says is for the good of Pokémon Go‘s longevity. Still, the unrushed pace of new content combined with the pressure to add the latest and most hyped Pokémon resulted in the Galar region being, unfortunately, skipped in favor of Paldea. Nearly a year after adding more than a dozen Pokémon from Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, Galar still hasn’t seen any love, but Steranka says that’s going to change. View the full article

It was hoped one of Destiny 2‘s least-powerful Supers would receive a new lease on life in The Final Shape, but not even Prismatic could save the Titan Arc Super Thundercrash, with fans demanding Bungie take another pass at the all-but-irrelevant ability. The Thundercrash ability sees the Titan charge up Arc energy, then launch themselves directly at a group of enemies (or a boss) and explode, dealing “meteoric” levels of damage. Unfortunately, it’s been some time since any Destiny player has described this damage as even nicely “mediocre,” with a few recent nerfs and an overall shift away from close-quarter combat against bosses essentially neutering the Super. “Base Thundercrash is by far the weakest one-off Super in the entire game,” one fan declared on Reddit on June 16. We know the next Fallout game is far off. But some of us felt there was a sliver of a chance, with the Fallout TV show garnering universal acclaim, that Bethesda might just realign its priority to strike while the iron is hot. That is sadly not the case. In an interview with YouTuber MrMattyPlays on June 16, Bethesda Game Studios head Todd Howard opened up about the future of the Fallout franchise post-TV show popularity. “Fallout has never been more popular,” Howard said but emphasized how Bethesda wants to give these franchises their due time to make the individual entries more meaningful. “We don’t feel like we need to rush any of that.” View the full article

Among other topics, like the next Fallout title and information about Elder Scrolls 6, Howard discussed how the team approached the reveal of this month’s content update at the Xbox Showcase, and that the team will likely be going silent for longer periods as post-Shattered Space content is developed. “There’ll probably be more of a gap after this—there’ll be some ******* gaps next year as we look at those big beats for kind of “Year Two” that we’re planning,” Howard admitted. Multiplayer game developers these days often find themselves stuck in the cobweb of either trying to balance a title to perfection to uphold competitive integrity, or letting the mayhem loose to maximize the entertainment factor. It’s very much the latter the Marvel Rivals‘ designers are embracing. Marvel Rivals has taken a cue from Spider-Man and broken free from the web of balance, choosing to prioritize the sheer “fun” of playing with one of its standout features—environmental destruction. “The primary perspective of the team is we’re trying to make a fun game, not necessarily a balanced game. And that fun really takes emphasis over that perfect balance, so it’s an exploration with the players,” game director Thad Sasser said in a conversation with Dot Esports, reflecting on how the developers are looking for feedback and usage patterns to refine the feature further down the line.
