  3. George R. R. Martin was an important part of building Elden Ring's world, and it seems like FromSoftware would be open to similar collaborations in the future. While there still aren't really all the many specifics about the actual work that Martin did, he's obviously been billed as the person that set the foundations for Elden Ring. It's something that sets it apart from other FromSoftware titles, even if it might just be a bit of a PR move. Bandai Namco is apparently interested in working with fantasy author Brandon Sanderson, but whether that's at all related to anything FromSoftware or not isn't clear, and the author himself is open to the idea too. In a recent interview with GameSpot (thanks, GamesRadar), game director Hidetaka Miyazaki was asked about the possibility of another similar collab, which he seemed very open to. "One of the huge value-adds of Elden Ring is, of course, George R. R. Martin's contribution in terms of the lore and the mythology, and it is one of the very unique points that other From Software games don't have," Miyazaki explained. "When the team was able to start unpacking his lore and his mythology, it turned into a huge stimulation for us, and it was something that on the development side, we don't get to experience that often. So there was a lot of fun in terms of the world-building and world-setting and trying to decipher and depict and then translate that to what players see on screen. Read more View the full article

  5. The Thing video game adaptation was an ambitious but flawed title, so Nightdive is hoping to help realise what it could have been. John Carpenter's The Thing was originally released back in 1982, but 20 years later Computer Artworks opted to make a sequel to the classic movie in video game form. It sold well at the time, and while reviews were generally favourable, it wasn't exactly perfect, but the whole concept of any of your teammates being able to potentially turn into the titular Thing was an incredibly cool one. Earlier this month Nightdive Studios announced that it's remastering The Thing, and in a recent interview with GamesRadar, the developer spoke of its hopes for its work on the game. "[Computer Artworks was] really, really pretty happy, and justifiably so, with the game that they produced, but they were also aware of limitations, of things that they could not do simply because the technology, the game engine, did not support it," business development director Larry Kuperman explained. "And, without going into too much detail, without providing any spoilers, there are some things that, we were able to fulfil the original vision of the developers. That's something that's really important to us." Read more View the full article
  6. In the middle of its first weekend following release on Friday, June 21, 2024, Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree has fallen into the "Mixed" category of Steam user reviews. Shadow of the Erdtree is the long-awaited expansion to Elden Ring, the most expansive RPG yet by FromSoftware, the development house behind Dark Souls, Bloodborne, and many more. Although critical reception to Shadow of the Erdtree has seen almost uniform praise for the DLC, many players eager to return to Elden Ring during the expansion's opening weekend have come away deflated. 10. Fromsoftware titles are known for their difficulty, and Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree is no exception. Still, the game offers players aid in a unique way compared to other Soulsborne titles with the addition of Spirit Ashes, NPC summons that players can use against bosses or other tough encounters. These Spirit Ashes can be upgraded to keep up with the player as they travel through the Lands Between and the Land of Shadow. 11. Dragon Age: Dreadwolf's name change to The Veilguard came as a small surprise, but BioWare didn't do it just for the sake of it. Look, no matter what you say, The Veilguard just isn't as cool a subtitle as Dreadwolf. The Veilguard sounds like a piece of DLC at best, but the decision has been made, so there's not much we can do about it now. But the decision wasn't just because of some marketing reason, or worse, an irrational hatred for wolves in text form or otherwise. Game Informer recently spoke with various team leads on The Veilguard, and asked each of them the reason behind the name change. While talking about how the Dragon Age games are "reflections of the teams that make them," game director Corinne Busche explained that BioWare "quickly learned and realized that the absolute beating heart of this game are these authentic diverse companions. When we took a step back, as we always do, we always check our decisions and make sure that they still represent the game we're trying to build. It just felt like we needed a title that represented what this game was truly about." Read more View the full article

  13. Microsoft shut down Arkane Austin back in May, but despite the sad news, former studio head Harvey Smith has been hit with a "burst of energy" after Redfall's final update. Much to the dismay of many, in early May Microsoft announced it was shutting down Hi-Fi Rush studio Tango Gameworks, Redfall developer Arkane Austin, alongside Alpha Dog Games and Roundhouse Games. Arkane Austin was able to get one final update out for the game, which arrived at the end of May, which added in a bunch of features players had been asking for since the game was released last year. Now that fans have had some time with the game, former studio head Smith shared on Twitter that the responses to it have given him a "burst of energy." On Smith's personal Twitter, he wrote "Hearing from the people playing the cleaned up, final version of Redfall is such a burst of energy. I'm looking forward to talking about what I'll be doing next." Slightly more sarcastically, he also added "final hit 'inbox zero' at the office," though that's more of a win for him than anyone else. Since the studio was announced to be shutting down, Smith hasn't announced what his current plans are in the industry, but with 30 years of experience, I'm sure he's found something just fine. 19. Palworld isn't currently available on PlayStation, but a tweet from the game's community manager appears to be hinting its arrival. Right now, if you want to play Palworld, the only way to do so is either on PC or Xbox Series X/S. That's not been a problem for the game, as it reached a massive amount of players in just a short ******* of time after launch, but it's always nice when games can be played across multiple platforms. There have been plenty of users online expressing the ******* to play the Pokemon inspired game (I say inspired loosely, here) on PlayStation, but there's no official word on the game being ported to the platform just yet. Yesterday, though, Bucky, Palworld's community manager, shared a tweet that sure seems to be hinting at a PlayStation release. In the tweet, Bucky wrote the game's name in between ******, green, and white heart emojis, following that up with "I want to add more hearts, but not sure what colour would fit...hmm...how about...." again writing Palworld between the same emojis, with the addition of a blue heart emoji either said. "Looks good I think!" they continue, adding on a suggestive eyes emoji at the end. Blue is quite obviously the main colour used in PlayStation's branding, with ******, white, and green being the main colours used in Xbox's branding, so it seems pretty clear what Bucky is suggesting here. 22. Having to choose between pulling for Sigewinne and Furina in Genshin Impact 4.7 may be a very real struggle for players, especially those that do not have an extra income of paid Primogems to assist them in their gacha-related efforts. Obtaining new 5-star characters relies on having enough Primogems to buy Intertwined Fates and then facing character banners to try and get them of course, players also have to face pull rates in Genshin Impacts banners, which could make them spend a lot more than they were expecting, given the low chances of getting a 5-star unit. 23. Image: Amelia Holowaty Krales / The Verge For months, I’ve been thinking about selling my PlayStation VR2. After a damning scoop, I’m finally ready to let it go. Months ago, I stashed the PSVR 2 away in a closet. I hadn’t played it for a very long time, but I hoped Sony might release new games that would make me want to bring it back out. Based on Android Central’s reporting, I should let those hopes go: apparently, Sony has cut funding for VR games and has just two more PSVR 2 titles in the works. Two! The future of the headset has been grim for a while. Earlier this year, Sony ***** off developers at Firesprite, the studio that made Horizon Call of the Mountain. It closed its London Studio, which made PlayStation VR Worlds, a game that came bundled with the original PSVR. Since... Continue reading… View the full article
  24. Surviving can be hard in Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree, but getting around doesn't have to be. One of the elements that sets Elden Ring apart from previous From Software games is its suite of traversal options. Things like universal fast travel, horse riding, double jumping, even single jumping are far from commonplace in Soulsborne games - in this regard, Elden Ring is the exception, not the rule. 25. The PlayStation VR2 is only a little over a year old, but it's sounding like Sony is already winding down its investment in VR titles. A lot of companies have made a range of attempts at virtual reality, but it hasn't really taken off in the way some might have hoped. The Meta Quest is pretty successful, but that's in one part because there's no annoying cables to deal with, but also because it's comparatively affordable (and you don't need an expensive PC either). Sony continued its attempt to have its own slice of the VR pie last year with the release of the PS VR2, its follow-up VR headset designed specifically for the PS5. But, it doesn't seem to have gone all that well, with a report earlier this year claiming that Sony paused production on the headset because it needed to shift a backlog of them first. Now, a new report from Android Central claims that Sony appears to be making cuts to funding for VR games, according to one source that spoke with the outlet. The report paraphrased the source, but distilled it to: "there will be very few opportunities for VR game development at Sony going forward." Another source apparently claimed only two PS VR2 games are currently in development at Sony, which isn't exactly confidence inspiring for the future of the headset.
