  12. It's strange. Videogames are supposed to be possibility spaces, boundless, consequence-free toy box worlds where you can become someone, or something, fantastical. And yet I'm a ******* for painstaking simulation - one of the best game experiences I've ever had is Snowrunner, and the slow-motion drama of driving several hundred pounds of building supplies up a hill. Star Citizen, especially when it's finished, is meant to be a space game of immeasurable scale. But the new 3.24 update, Cargo Empires, brings a wonderful, tactile kind of realism, a sense of normality that makes everything else pop even louder. Also inheriting one of the best-loved features of Starfield and Skyrim, as we wait for Star Citizen 4.0, this is a seriously worthy update. Read the rest of the story... 13. AMD has just released a brand new Ryzen X3D gaming CPU with a tempting price, especially if it's bought as part of a bundle. The new AMD Ryzen 5 7600X3D is cheaper than the widely-acclaimed Ryzen 7 7800X3D, as it only has six cores and a lower clock speed, making it an ideal CPU for a budget gaming rig. There's a really big catch, however. That's because this new AMD CPU is only going to be available in the US, and from one retailer, Micro Center. That's a real shame, as there's a solid gap in the market for an affordable Socket AM5 CPU with 3D V-Cache. The Ryzen 7 7800X3D is our top pick as the best gaming CPU right now, but it costs $419 from Amazon right now, and the new Ryzen 5 7600X3D reportedly costs just $299.99. Read the rest of the story... Seekers of the Storm, the first Risk of Rain 2 expansion to come out since Gearbox’s acquisition of the indie roguelike, is at the receiving end of a barrage of criticism—and to no one’s surprise, players are furious at Gearbox’s role in the whole fiasco. The Seekers of the Storm DLC was blasted by Risk of Rain 2 players initially for questionable pricing, which Gearbox has since course-corrected. 16. When Showa ********* Story was first announced in 2022, its reveal trailer depicting a parallel 1991 in which the ******* States had become a colony of Japan went viral, with nearly half a million views on IGN’s YouTube channel alone. It has been a year since the last update via an interview with IGN Japan. ******** developer Nekcom has since pushed back the game’s release, switched development from Unreal Engine 4 to 5, and devoted additional time and resources in order to meet gamers’ intense expectations. Now, in a fresh interview with Creative Director XY.Luo, IGN can exclusively reveal a brand new boss character and several new screenshots that show how work is progressing on this fascinating new game. Gokou is the impressive new boss that players will face at some point in their adventure. This ********* politician has blonde hair and a muscular chest covered in beastly hair, and harbours a treacherous past. “Gokou is a character who is a mix of an ********* cowboy and a ********* samurai,” explains Luo. “Although he is *********, he is deeply knowledgeable about ********* culture, and when you ****** him, you will notice he pulls from both Eastern and Western cultures in his combat style.” Luo continues, “While I cannot go into detail yet about the techniques Gokou uses in battle, he is closely connected with the background story of the game. He’s not the final boss or the overarching villain, but in our alternate history, Gokou is the Governor of Texas, and it was him who sold the land of Texas to Japan.” In our alternate history, Gokou is the Governor of Texas, and it was him who sold the land of Texas to Japan While Gokou’s character model appears almost photorealistic, and development has included some photogrammetry, Luo explains that Gukou and most of the other main characters were initially hand-drawn, before being converted to 3D and added to the game. “Gokou’s design was inspired by a certain famous 1980s ********* rock star,” hints Luo. “Whether each character is created by hand or based on a 3D facial model, we take care to make sure they express realism. Since our development team is small – just 26 members – we are outsourcing some of the asset creation.” Indeed, you can see from our exclusive set of new screenshots that the visual quality of the game has markedly improved since it was first revealed. Luo says that development is proceeding “as planned”, with his team aiming to achieve the quality they had first envisioned. “With over two years of hard work by our incredible development team since the first trailer was revealed, and upgrading the game engine from Unreal Engine 4 to Unreal Engine 5, the game looks much more solid, including the graphics,” says Luo, “However, compared to a large development team, I must say Showa ********* Story is not a AAA game, but I believe that it will exceed players’ expectations when it comes out.” Showa ********* Story follows protagonist Chouko, a teenage action stuntwoman mysteriously revived from the *****, as she fights her way through hordes of monsters and zombies in a postapocalyptic 1980s ******* States that has been colonized by Japan. Heavily influenced by B-movies and ********* and ********* pop-culture, the game is currently in development for PlayStation 5 and PC. The release date is still tbc. 17. Amazon Games said it "regrets confusion" over remarks by CEO Christoph Hartmann on voice acting and AI that drew sharp criticism online, seeking to clarify that it thinks generative AI needs to be used "responsibly" and calling actors "essential creative contributors." Amazon's statement was in response to a lengthy comment from Hartmann, in which he mused on the difficulties games face with lengthy development cycles, and suggested that AI may "streamline processes" and help shorten the time it takes to make games. Asked for his thoughts on the SAG-AFTRA union strike seeking better AI protections, Hartmann responded in part: "[W]hen we talk about AI, first of all, hopefully it will help us to have new gameplay ideas, which has nothing to do with taking work away from anyone. And especially for games, we don't really have acting... The majority of the team sits in programming and that's not going to go away because that's all about innovation. If it takes something, it will be really the boring parts," he said. He then went on to opine that it may be helpful in localization, then added that he doesn't believe any technology can "replace human creativity and the uniqueness... There's always something special." While Hartmann sought to moderate his comments, they nevertheless provoked anger in some quarters. SAG-AFTRA Interactive Media Agreement negotiating committee chair Sarah Elmaleh was among those who took to X/Twitter to criticize Hartmann, saying, "What’s funny about this whole Amazon Games CEO quote is *I* thought it sounded like AI had written his statement. Turns out I’ve been unfair. To the AI." She subsequently provided a lengthy statement to IGN on behalf of SAG-AFTRA. "Games don't really have acting" is a wild statement. I've devoted most of my life to games performance, just like whole generations of new performers inspired by great games performers before them. Swaths of fans seek out these performers to tell them how much they connect with these characters through their performances, and the humanity they bring to them. I'm an actor and performance director, not a CEO. But it seems to me that several of the largest companies in the world sitting down to negotiate with us aren't doing it for their health — it's because they recognize the proven viability of a games business model that requires human performance, needs union performers. That player connection and emotional investment I mention is correlated with billions and billions of dollars. Not all kinds of games require performance, but giving up using actors completely might just represent a significant financial pivot or sunk loss cost for our bargaining partners. But again, I'm not a fancy business person. When CEOs do speak effectively and accurately on behalf of their company, they do so by listening to their employees. Whether game design, localization, programming, acting, anything - these highly specialized and professionalized workers are the ones who understand whether and how AI might be assistive or detrimental in their work. And workers should have the right and the means to advocate for the proper use of this tool. That's what SAG-AFTRA is doing, why I'm proud and grateful to be part of a union for this craft I love, and why I fully support the organizing efforts of developers who likewise deserve their say in how we implement this technology to best serve this industry, to best serve videogames, to best serve our audiences. To this and all CEOs, including our own bargaining group — we stand ready to negotiate. Asked for clarification on what Hartmann meant by his comments, and for their response to the fact that games such as New World utilize voice actors, an Amazon spokesperson told IGN: We regret the confusion stemming from these comments. Of course games developed and published by Amazon Games include actors, who we consider to be essential creative contributors, both now and in the future. Like most developers and publishers we do not keep actors on staff, and Christoph’s comments were specific to our internal development teams. As with any tool, we believe generative AI needs to be used responsibly and we’re carefully exploring how we can use it to help solve the technical challenges development teams face. Generative AI has become a flash point among artists, actors, and other creators throughout the games industry, many of whom ***** that they will see their roles reduced or replaced in an already volatile industry. In July, the SAG-AFTRA union went on strike in an affort to gain stronger AI protections for video game voice actors. In a follow-up comment in response to Amazon's statement, Elmaleh said, "If Amazon Games would like to explore how AI can be used responsibly to solve technical challenges in game development as it relates to acting, we welcome them to a direct dialogue at any time. We have the blueprint ready." In the meantime, Amazon Games is trying to expand its footprint outside of MMOs, among other things serving as the publisher for Tomb Raider and the recently-announced King of Meat. Earlier this week, Amazon Games and Bandai Namco announced that Blue Protocol would no longer be coming to the U.S. New World: Aeternum, an updated console release of the game released in 2021, is set to release on October 15. 19. The past week in Dota 2 has been quite eventful. And it would’ve likely been an exciting one if all the events didn’t revolve around a single item—the Hand of Midas—that continues to be exploited. Now, a new bug involving the Lone Druid has been discovered. Though not as powerful as the initial couple of Midas exploits, the Lone Druid can now reset, or speed up, the recharge of Midas by utilizing the all-too-powerful Spirit Bear. If Druid casts the Hand of Midas on a creep, then gives it to the Spirit Bear with a full inventory and passes the Midas into another slot in the backpack, the item gains an extra charge that only the Spirit Bear can use. I’ve confirmed this exploit in a demo area, and it appears that after the extra charge is spent, there is no way of resetting the cooldown until it ticks down on its own. View the full article
