The creator of popular deck-building poker inspired game Balatro has taken legal steps to ensure his creation can never be used to promote actual gambling, even after his ******. Balatro is a roguelike which asks players to earn chips to beat "blinds" and but despite being steeped in gambling lexicon there are no real world gambling elements in the game, or even microtransactions for that matter. Creator LocalThunk has now said on X/Twitter that he has taken action to ensure Balatro can never be used to promote actual gambling by solidifying it in his will. From the outside this might make 0 sense but I hate the thought of Balatro becoming a true gambling game so much that when I recently created my will I stipulated that the Balatro IP may never be sold or licensed to any gambling company/Casino [Hidden Content] — localthunk (@LocalThunk) August 6, 2024 “From the outside this might make zero sense but I hate the thought of Balatro becoming a true gambling game so much that when I recently created my will I stipulated that the Balatro IP may never be sold or licensed to any gambling company or casino,” wrote LocalThunk. The comment came in response to a user who joked Balatro was being used to introduce younger generations to gambling, and this isn't the first time LocalThunk or publisher Playstack have had to refute such claims. Balatro was temporarily removed from ***** on a number of digital storefronts including the Nintendo Switch store shortly after its February 20, 2024 launch, when concerns surrounding gambling themes led a rating board to increase the game’s age rating from 3+ to 18+. “I do not condone gambling (staking something personally valuable on an uncertain event) nor do I believe that Balatro contains gambling,” wrote LocalThunk in a March X/Twitter post responding to the rating board decision. “I did add risk/reward mechanics and random number generation to Balatro, but these are core mechanics to the genre at large.” In IGN’s 9/10 review, we described Balatro as “the sort of fun that threatens to derail whole weekend plans as you stay awake far too late staring into the eyes of a jester tempting you in for just one more run." Let’s see if my No Man’s Sky experience matches yours. Every year or so I boot it up, hoping the latest base-building expansion or rideable space-dino will keep me playing for longer than the couple hours it usually takes for me to drift away. Every year it fails to do so, my grand space adventure quickly deteriorating into convoluted inventory management across infinite worlds overflowing with the same repetitive activities. The latest update was no different, with pretty new floating islands and revamped water tech still leaving me wanting… more... Read more.View the full article

Between Arena Breakout Infinite, Escape From Tarkov, Gray Zone Warfare, Hunt Showdown 1896, and Exfil, competition in the extraction FPS world is high right now. Perhaps it's all pushback against fast-paced hero shooters - after so many years of, lighter, arcade-type action, there's an appetite now for something more realistic, something *******. But with so many tactical FPS games suddenly emerging, it's difficult to speculate which ones will successfully break through. Based on its current performance on Steam, Delta Force Hawk Ops is definitely in with a chance. Marking the return of the erstwhile '00s classic, its latest alpha is pulling solid numbers and starting to climb the wishlist chart. Read the rest of the story... Balatro stands a very real chance of being my 2024 game of the year. It's an inventive take on card games and roguelikes that uses the rules of poker as a universal baseline. The score-chasing of arcades combines deck-building and rule-bending joker cards to create some wild combinations. Balatro is an ingeniously original game that already has its imitators, but that hasn't stopped consistent comparisons to real-world gambling. It's gotten so bad, in fact, that the game's creator has now written a clause in their will to keep Balatro as far away from casinos as possible. Read the rest of the story... The Corsair H100i Pro RGB is a closed-loop CPU cooler that's combining magnetic levitation and RGB LEDs to bring you one of the best liquid chip-chillers you can strap to your processor. Obviously it's the RGB LED component of the attached pump which gives it the necessary cooling performance, but those maglev fans are none too shabby either. When you're talking about all-in-one (AIO) chillers it's increasingly tough to look past the range that Corsair is able to lay out on the table as offering some of the best liquid coolers. Once a company dedicated to memory alone, Corsair has expanded its reach into myriad different areas of the PC gaming business and has actually managed to reach the top in surprising places, CPU cooling most definitely being one of them. The H100i Pro RGB will be instantly recognisable to any Corsair cooling aficionados; it looks almost identical to the classic H100 except for a slightly smaller radiator, thinner coolant tubing, and those LED lines around the pump. But that's no bad thing, the standard 240mm AIO design is tried and tested and the H100 design has been one of the most popular for a reason. Read the rest of the story... I don't play much Call Of Duty any more. My feelings about the series have settled back from self-righteous fury over its Pentagon-sponsored war-fellating to a quieter, regretful sense that there have maybe been enough Call Of Duty games now, and that it would be nice if we could fill that infamous late October/early November release slot with, I don't know, games about witches instead, or maybe just turn it into a public holiday and spend the week lying on a mattress regarding the ceiling. Still: I've skinned and filleted enough COD in my time to know that ****** Ops 6's new "omnimovement" system is going to ruffle as many feathers as it smooths. The short version is that it turns you into Max Payne. Read more View the full article
