Welcome back to a slightly surreal Thursday of bargains. Do you know what I say in strange times? Video games—entertainment via escapism, and that's exactly what I have for you here today. I'd start by looking to some top-tier AAA JRPGs on Switch first, then grab a bunch of PS5 Pro Enhanced games cheap (for future wow-factor investment). But hey—you do you. In retro news, I'm Tekken the time to celebrate the illustrious 29th of a 3D fighter king—a long-in-the-jaguar-tooth progenitor of a 58M copies sold series that still endures. Though I was a staunch Virtua Fighter / Saturn man at the time, I remember coveting my mate's copy of this more approachable and well-presented competitor. The concept of controlling each limb with a dedicated face button made much more sense for muscle memorising combos, and the lure of unlocking a bunch of sub-bosses was addictive enough to make us actually go buy a Memory Card. After the massive success of Hogwarts Legacy in 2023, it seemed like only a matter of time before a sequel would be announced. In addition to a follow-up game, the success of the magical RPG has initiated a whole slew of Harry Potter media for Wizarding World fans to look forward to. Warner Bros, the owners of many rights related to the massive Potter franchise, will try to tie new products together through storytelling, but that might not be a good thing for the franchise. Mages are powerful spellcasters tapping into the Fade for their abilities in Dragon Age: The Veilguard. With the deep customization options available, players can build their Mage Rook for various playstyles. Mages in Dragon Age: The Veilguard do not necessarily start as strong as their Rogue or Warrior counterparts. However, their combat prowess grows as the story progresses, making them a rewarding choice over time. They are also incredibly effective both at range and in melee combat, with tons of versatility in their kits. View the full article
17 years is a long time for any game to still be pumping out content, yet Lord of the Rings Online is managing it. Launched during the MMO ********** days following the release of World of Warcraft along with other titles like Age of Conan, Dungeons and Dragons Online, and Aion, LOTRO appears to still be fighting fit with tons of content drops over the years. Photo by Chris Welch / The Verge Microsoft is testing a big Windows on Arm update to let more x64 software and games run under Prism emulation on Copilot Plus PC with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X Elite or X Plus processors. The capability comes as part of the Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 27744, rolling out to testers in the Canary Channel. This way, Qualcomm’s new chips can run more kinds of apps that don’t have native ARM64 versions and, until now, weren’t usable with emulation. It could even enable games that use AVX2, like Starfield and Helldivers 2, to work on Windows on Arm. [/url] With this update, Microsoft’s emulator will open up support for 64-bit x86 software to use processor extensions like AVX, AVX2, BMI, FMA, and F16C. However, it says 32-bit software still won’t... Continue reading… View the full article
Striking New York Times tech workers have created a “Guild Builds” page dedicated to strike-themed games you can play, including a spin on Wordle, a word search, and the custom Connections I reported on earlier today. As part of its strike announcement on Monday, the New York Times Tech Guild requested that people don’t cross the digital picket line to play the NYT’s daily puzzle games. This collection of five other games offers an alternative if you want to support the striking workers but also do some brain teasers. First-person shooters combine skill and reflexes with high-octane gameplay, attracting players of every age. From building giant roller coasters to making sure that trash can is placed just so, the levels of detail and creative freedom in theme park management games is addictively high. The childlike fun of seeing thousands of guests screaming on a loop-the-loop (and the horror of seeing them leave in a rage after you forgot to build them more ******* blocks...) is unmatched. Planet Coaster 2 looks to enhance the excellent action from the original and go one better with the addition of water parks, and it enjoyed high review scores from the press prior to launch. Starfield's approach to points-of-interest, or POIs, has been a point of contention since it initially launched. Currently, Starfield has a number of handcrafted POIs which are then randomly placed on planets. Their loot and ****** placements are then randomly generated to make them feel more distinct. However, as many players have discovered, these POIs end up feeling incredibly repetitive, even with the loot and enemies being switched out each time. They never feel unexpected, mysterious, or challenging, as players approach them the exact same way every time. View the full article
Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick has labelled this summer’s Borderlands movie “disappointing”, but claimed it had a positive impact on game sales. Based on the video game series developed by its Gearbox studio, the Borderland film was written and directed by Eli Roth, and starred Cate Blanchett, Kevin Hart, Jamie Lee Curtis and Jack ******. The film grossed just $33 million worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo, against a reported production budget of roughly $115 million, plus marketing and distribution costs of $30 million. It has been over 10 years since EA initially launched The Sims 4 in 2014, and with the announcement that it will continue to be the core game in The Sims franchise, it's interesting to speculate what may lie ahead. The Sims 4 has been arguably the most aesthetically pleasing game in the franchise, with a brilliant Build Mode and a Create-A-Sim mode that is constantly improving as the years go by. However, the game's life simulator elements have been lacking in what has made the game a success over its lifespan, as its Live Mode gameplay features have fallen short with their lack of unpredictability, spontaneity, and charm. If there's one announcement that would cause the most hysteria within the gaming community, it'd be a delay to GTA 6. Fans have been waiting well over a decade for this behemoth of a sequel, and it would be a huge ***** if they had to wait any longer than they've already endured. As a result, Take-Two's quarterly earnings reports have become nail-biting moments - no one wants to see its current launch window shift as it updates shareholders on its future pipeline. J. R. R. Tolkien's famous fantasy creation is one filled with vast dichotomies, much like the ******* of history he lived through. You have the bucolic existence of the Hobbits contrasting with Sauron and Saruman's industrial evils, being weaved together throughout the story before culminating in the Scouring of the Shire. The Borderlands Movie hit box offices back in August to poor results, to say the least. But Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick doesn't think the film hurt the Borderlands video game franchise at all. In fact, if anything, he thinks the movie was good for the games. Speaking to IGN ahead of the company's Q2 earnings call today, Zelnick admitted that Borderlands hadn't performed as well as he'd hoped, but that he doesn't feel too torn up about it: "Obviously that movie was disappointing," he said. "That said, it actually sold more catalog. So, I don't think it hurt at all, if anything I think it may have helped a little bit. It does highlight something that I've spoken about many times which is the difficulty of bringing our intellectual property to another medium." What Zelnick is referring to here are his previous comments on video game film adaptations. When we spoke to him back in August, he told us that the economic impact of licensing a game IP to a movie is small, and in previous interviews (like this one with Inverse) he's talked about how risky it is to adapt vidoe game licenses to other mediums. While it didn't seem to hurt Borderlands in this instance, it's clear that the performance of the film has confirmed at least some of Zelnick's predictions about such an endeavor. We gave the Borderlands film a 3/10 at IGN, calling it "a catastrophic disappointment that plays like hacked-to-pieces studio slop, betraying everything fans adore about Gearbox Software’s franchise in derivative, regrettable fashion." Meanwhile, Take-Two confirmed in its earnings that Borderlands 4 is still planned for release in fiscal 2026 (which runs from April 2025 through March 2026), as is ******: The Old Country. Grand Theft Auto 6 is still planned for fall of 2025, with Zelnick saying he still feels confident in that date. Ken Levine's Judas is still TBA, with Zelnick telling IGN that he feels "really, really good about it and I think Ken Levine's team is totally focused on innovation." Take-Two says it has approximately 37 games expected to release through its fiscal 2027. The company reported today net bookings of $1.47 billion driven by GTA and Borderlands, with digitally delivered net bookings accounting for 96% of the total. 82% of Take-Two's console game sales were digital for the quarter, up from 75% at this time last year. Grand Theft Auto 5 has sold over 205 million units globally, Red ***** Redemption 2 has sold over 67 million units, and NBA 2K25, which launched September 3, has reached nearly 4.5 million copies sold. Take-Two is expecting full year net bookings of between $5.55 billion and $5.65 billion. The company also just announced it sold its indie Private Division label to an unknown buyer, after the label suffered a slow demise including layoffs and studio closures. Take-Two has sold its indie publishing label Private Division. Take-Two has sold indie publisher Private Division to an unknown buyer in the wake of shuttering Roll7 and Intercept Games, saying that it wants to focus on its core and mobile businesses going forward. While virtually all of Private Division's live and unreleased games will go to the new buyer, Take-Two says it will continue to support No Rest for the Wicked, the recently-released action RPG from Moon Studios that's currently in early access. Take-Two announced the move during Wednesday's earnings results, saying in a statement, "We are grateful for the contributions that the Private Division team has made to our company and are confident that they will continue to achieve success in their new home." The Private Division ***** follows Take-Two's decision to wind down indie studios Roll7 and Intercept Games, both of which operated under the label's umbrella. An IGN report at the time revealed Take-Two's plans to offload the label and that it had found interest from a private equity firm, with discussions faciliated by individuals with connnections to Moon Studios leadership. It's unclear whether that firm ultimately followed through on its interest. Private Division was founded in 2017 with the goal of provide funding and support to "triple-I" game such as The Outer Worlds. Its upcoming releases include Tales of the Shire, the cozy Lords of the Rings game that was recently delayed into 2025, and an untitled action-adventure game from Game Freak codenamed Project Bloom. Take-Two has spent much of 2024 trying to sell Private Division, telling employees in April that it would no longer support the label and laying off many of its employees. A small group has remained to continue support No Rest for the Wicked as well as Private Division's other upcoming games. Take-Two, for its part, is turning even more of its focus toward Grand Theft Auto VI, which it still expects to release in fall 2025.
