As someone whose job involves keeping track of how well games are doing and what everyone's playing, I'm very used to watching player counts bump up and down as updates and expansions arrive. It's all part of the natural flow. Yet despite Gearbox dropping a free Borderlands 4 DLC on us this week, there's been absolutely no change in its Steam numbers. Even as someone who's really enjoyed my time with it so far, I'm finding it difficult to pluck up the motivation to return for the new story event, and it seems the community is feeling much the same. I love when games get weird and grimy, and new dark fantasy looter shooter Vision Quest is hitting all the right notes. Whether it's the suburban cosmic horror of Look Outside, the MS Paint aesthetics of Nubby's Number Factory, or the grimdark rustiness of Cloverpit, 2025's best indie games prove that small teams are doing some of the most interesting work out there. This newcomer from Wizmud Games already has my attention, and it's just confirmed a publishing deal with Palworld developer Pocketpair that should hopefully bring it to the attention of a much wider audience. Warhammer—End Times: Vermintide celebrated its tenth birthday in October, a fact that makes me painfully aware of how much closer I am to becoming rat fodder myself. The original Vermintide was a decent stab at Left 4 Dead-style cooperative action by developer Fatshark, but much like Valve's pioneering shooter, it has long been eclipsed by its superior sequel... Nominally speaking, the world of Warhammer 40,000 is technically our own. Just 40,000-ish years in the future, so far and away from Earth that any historical connections can easily be handwaved. Even so, there's a certain appeal to exploring grimdark settings before the space stuff. The upcoming wargame Marcher: Empires at War does so through the lens of an alternate history of dieselpunk war. Read the rest of the story... Do you ever wonder what happened to Tower of Fantasy? The free-to-play shared-world anime game that I fully expected to make it onto our list of the best MMOs? The one that got some good buzz on Twitch back in 2022 as a potential Genshin Impact killer? Then you might be surprised, elated even, to hear that it's getting yet another big rework in just a few days to bring it closer to the original expectation of it being a shared-world anime adventure MMORPG, while keeping it separate from the regular version that I can only assume still has some staunch defenders. The neon lights of 1980s nostalgia are still strong among nerds. The sleek aesthetics and synthetic audiovisual bliss certainly leave a striking image. But beneath all that glam is a seedy underbelly, as the 80s also saw a rise in media pushing the envelope on shock value. From the satanic panic over Dungeons and Dragons to the rise of the "video ******," teens had plenty to hide in their messy rooms. Star Citizen has earned itself a reputation over the years, and rightfully so. Not only is it one of the biggest space games in terms of in-world scale, but it's comfortably outpaced its rivals when it comes to budget, with its combined crowdfunding and sales passing the $800 million mark earlier this year. That makes it a particularly intriguing ****** box to peer into, but one that can also feel a little intimidating; now is the perfect time to try, however, as you can currently play Star Citizen for free with a gargantuan list of ships available for testing. Of all the classes overhauled for Dungeons and Dragons in 2024, Ranger arguably had the best glow-up. In the original 2014 incarnation, Ranger had a reputation for disappointment, often seen as underwhelming when compared to the classes power gamers favored. Still, the Ranger had dedicated players, and these same players celebrated at the changes brought by the 2024 ruleset. Speaking of disappointing hunters, Dek of Predator: Badlands is coincidentally underestimated for his so-called weakness. Read the rest of the story... Valve has said that the price of its console-style PC, the Steam Machine, will be in line with comparable-spec PCs, and not subsidised to reach lower price points, as is often the case with PlayStation and Xbox consoles. Announced earlier this week, Steam Machine is a six-inch console-like cube with “over six times the horsepower of Steam Deck”, which is designed to allow PC games to be played on the TV. Officially, the device is launching next year, but there’s currently no word on a price point. According to a Linus Tech Tips video published alongside the reveal, Steam Machine will be priced “like a PC, rather than like a console”, and a Valve developer has now confirmed that will indeed be the case. Monsters are Coming! takes city-survival and tower defense to the next level with a moving town, and there are plenty of upgrades to use to survive for longer. Upgrades are typically of two types: Hero and City. There are plenty of options available in both categories. While you can eventually get all upgrades, you'll have to be selective about how you use your resources. This guide will list the best upgrades for your Hero and City after you've just started playing the game. I have listed the three best choices in each category. Table of contentsBest Hero upgrades in Monsters are Coming!Best City upgrades in Monsters are Coming!Best Hero upgrades in Monsters are Coming! Your Hero has different duties during a run. This includes killing enemies, collecting resources, and finding secret spots on the map. Upgrades to your Heroes will enhance their potential. Here are my three best choices. Movement: I like to move a lot with my Hero. Boosting the movement speed will allow your Hero to move quickly on the map. This allows them to pivot more quickly in different directions and engage the enemies. It also allows him to reach more areas of the map faster and gather more resources. I feel it's better to upgrade as much Movement as possible to help your cause.Carrying Capacity: Resources are vital in Monsters are Coming! as you'll be able to build your City quicker. Running to and fro to bring them back is possible, but highly inconvenient. Upgrading the amount of resources you can carry reduces this problem. You miss fewer resources, bring back more, and upgrade your City quicker.Damage: While upgrading Health and Armor are good choices, I prefer investing more in Damage. Monsters are Coming! is a lot more relaxing when it comes to Hero death. Instead, improving the damage potential of your Hero will allow him to kill more enemies and die less. This brings more resources and makes it easier for you to level up your City. Screenshot by Destructoid Best City upgrades in Monsters are Coming! Here are my top three choices for City upgrades. Fortifications: The death of your Hero might not automatically end your run, but your City getting damaged will. It's significantly harder to repair your City, and investing in Fortifications will help it stand tall for longer. While investing in the City's health is also a good choice, I prefer raising the Fortification.Tower Damage: Raising the base damage of your towers will allow you to clear more enemies and prevent them from reaching the City. This modifier also applies to all types of towers, so raising it is one of the best ways to secure survival for a longer time.Attack Speed: I considered including Attack Range on this list, but faster attacks are better. Your City kills enemies quickly and prevents them from doing damage. Having a better range is useful, but your towers will be able to target the monsters anyway when they're close enough. High damage means that the enemies being close doesn't matter too much. The post Best Hero and City upgrades in Monsters are Coming! appeared first on Destructoid. View the full article
