  3. Marvel Rivals enjoyed an immediate huge launch, with over 440,000 concurrent players on Steam alone. NetEase’s free-to-play Marvel-themed hero shooter saw a peak concurrent player count of 444,286 on Valve’s platform. But the true concurrent figure will be much higher given Marvel Rivals launched on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S also (Sony and Microsoft do not make player numbers public). It seems to be going down well on Steam, too, with a ‘mostly positive’ user review rating from over 5,700 reviews (76% of the reviews are positive). Check out IGN’s Marvel Rivals Review in Progress to find out what we think. For NetEase, it will be hoping not only to keep Marvel Rivals’ player count as high as possible for as long as possible (something that’s proved particularly tricky for live service games of late), but to make enough money from players to meet the company’s internal revenue projections. To that end, Marvel Rivals sells a battle pass and premium skins. But is it paying off? The game is currently third in Steam’s top-sellers list, which is sorted by revenue, behind only the pricey Steam Deck and Grinding Gear Games’ Path of Exile 2. This suggests Marvel Rivals is already convincing players to open their wallets. Marvel Rivals launched alongside Season 0, dubbed Dooms’ Rise. This month-long kick-off season starts with a total of 33 heroes, all available to play for free, eight maps for Quick Match and Competitive modes, a Conquest map, and a Practice Range. Dooms' Rise serves as the opening chapter “for the chaos caused by each of Doctor Dooms’ time experiments colliding and unleashing the Timestream Entanglement,” NetEase said. There’s a Twitch Drops event for Season 0, as you’d expect from a live service game of this type, an 'Entangled Moments' seasonal event to unlock spray rewards, gallery card rewards, and stories for completing tasks, and a global launch gift: a special code for a free Iron Man costume. 4. Riot Games is bringing League of Legends into the TCG world with Project K, a game the developers believe will be the “best social TCG out there.” Despite reports earlier in the year suggesting a global release is not in the works anytime soon, Riot appears to be going in the other direction towards Project K being available in multiple regions. According to Riot, the game was created by Rioters with a deep love for the trading card game genre. This means the community will know the developer is taking extra care to ensure a thriving community built with a vast competitive ecosystem. To accomplish this, Riot is taking measured steps to find the right publishing partners for Project K. It has found a publishing partner in China and will launch the game early in 2025. 8. To some, the name Indiana Jones conjures up images first and foremost of a professor, a genius of deciphering history and unlocking the mysteries of the ancient world. Others, bluntly, think of action: of whip cracking, and shooting swordsmen rather than engaging in one-on-one duels - or in battering a nazi’s head in atop a speeding tank. Both are right. Indy is both of those things. Which makes video games a problem. Read more View the full article

  20. Thank your own personal deity—possibly Jubileus the Creator—it's Friday. And what an end-of-the week closer I have for you today! FREE is the keyword of the moment for specific reasons I care not to know nor seek to quantify. For PlayStation owners, that means a lovely Mini Turismo for nada. For PC gamers, well... it means a landslide... In retro news, I'm wondering how the hell a quarter of a century has gone by since I bought Donkey Kong 64 at launch. In '99, I'd already played the backpack off Rare's Banjo-Kazooie and was therefore stoked with DK64's slick, 4MB-enhanced presentation and insane gameplay variety provided by its hot-swappable, rotating cast of Kongs. Couple that with tunes that still have permanent residence in my head and a truly bananas list of things to collect across 30 hours, and this silverback is still very much worth a modern replay. 22. The day has finally arrived - Delta Force is out on Steam for all to play. Yes, it's technically in open beta, but with no end date in sight and an enormous wealth of content, this is basically an early access launch. The FPS is fighting its battle on two fronts with a large-scale multiplayer experience and an Escape From Tarkov-rivaling extraction mode, and when you combine that with it being free, it's unsurprising to see it doing huge launch day numbers on Steam. What is surprising, though, is its user review rating, which is being massively dragged down by a barrage of players complaining about its anti-cheat. Read the rest of the story... 23. Marvel Rivals is a hit hero shooter featuring a cast of iconic heroes and villains, from Iron Man and Captain America to slightly more obscure characters like Cloak and Dagger. It's most regularly compared to Blizzard's Overwatch thanks to its team-focused tactics and its cast's unique abilities. Like many free multiplayer games these days, Marvel Rivals includes a code redemption system that lets you unlock freebies such as skins. We fully expect developer NetEase will continue to drop more codes post-launch, and given they only stay active for a set amount of time, we felt it'd be helpful to compile the lot, let you know what they get you, and flag when they're set to become inactive. 25. Image: Riot Games The League of Legends universe is expanding once again — this time with a physical card game. Riot Games announced today that it’s developing a physical trading card game set in the League universe. The game is currently known as “Project K,” and Riot says it’s working with an unnamed partner in China to release the game there in early 2025. As for a global release, Riot says, “We are taking our time to find the right publishing partners.” There aren’t a lot of details available about Project K. According to Riot, the game “has unique gameplay and is best when played with friends and in person,” and development is being led by director Dave Guskin and producer Chengran Chai. You can get a sense of the game in the images below: Of course, this is far from the first spinoff from League. So far, that has included mobile games like Teamfight Tactics and Wild Rift, the Netflix series Arcane, and the competitive fighting game 2XKO, which is expected to launch next year. Not all of these bets have paid off. In January, Riot announced that it was cutting more than 500 jobs, which included shutting down Riot Forge Games, a publishing label for indie games set inside of League. Also impacted was Legends of Runeterra, a mobile card game that launched in 2020, which Riot said “hasn’t performed as well as we need it to.” The Project K news comes as card games are having another moment, led largely by the new smartphone version of the Pokémon Trading Card Game.
