  1. Stardew Valley is a game full of whimsy and weirdness. With fantasy elements that range from adorable forest spirits helping rejuvenate an economically depressed town to a little mouse that sells hats for no other reason than liking hats, the farming simulator is chock-full of interesting and weird secrets. No hidden secret leads to as strange a prize as the final Lost Book quest, which allows players to collect the three weirdest pieces of furniture in the entirety of Stardew Valley. 2. When The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered comes to PC later this year, it'll still require a PlayStation Network account. Sony's run into a bit of controversy with its PC ports of once-exclusive titles over the past few years. While the company is making fan-favorite titles like The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered available to Steam users, it continues to force players to make or connect a PSN account to enjoy them, which not everyone is happy about. 8. Being compared to the infamous Evolving Skies—lovingly nicknamed Evolving Cries by some collectors—thanks to its Eeveelution cards and striking Umbreon ex artwork, PTCG Prismatic Evolutions has been anxiously awaited ever since its announcement. Despite being scheduled to come out officially on Jan. 17, booster packs for the special expansion set have already started popping up in the online Pokémon Trading Card Game community, taking the already immense level of fan excitement about the crystalline card list to a fever pitch. And while early pack opening claims should be taken with a bucket of salt, the findings from one Whatnot streamer’s mega-pack opening stream have got the community intrigued, leading many to wonder whether the upcoming expansion set could feature the highly-coveted demi god pack. 9. Production of the second season of the Amazon series Fallout, along with numerous other shows, has been delayed by the massive wildfires in LA County. 10. Image: Nintendo / Lego While we’re all waiting for official news about the Switch 2, Nintendo has gone ahead and announced a very different kind of console. The company is teasing a collaboration with Lego that will see the original grey brick known as a Game Boy rendered in Lego blocks. There are no details yet, aside from the fact that it’ll be out in October, but it’s likely an official reveal is coming soon. This isn’t the first collab between the two companies, as there have been a handful of Lego sets based on Nintendo properties, along with a blocky rendition of the NES. View this post on Instagram A post shared by LEGO (@lego) [/url] If you’re keeping track, this is part of a lengthy string of non-Switch 2 announcements and launches that Nintendo has made over the last few months. A Nintendo museum opened in Kyoto in October, and after that the company released an alarm clock called Alarmo, started a music streaming service full of classic gaming tunes, and kicked off a test for a mysterious MMO. At this rate, it’s almost pointless to guess what Nintendo will do next. View the full article

Operations is the extraction game mode in Delta Force, where you scavenge for gear to upgrade your ****** Site, get access to better equipment, and go back into the action on one of many available maps. Many extraction games, like Escape of Tarkov, have server-wide wipes alongside major updates that delete your progress and force everyone to start from scratch. This ensures everyone starts on the same level when the update drops. View the full article
  13. In the wake of the successful Nintendo Switch and Valve Steam Deck, we have seen a wave of PC-based, Android-based, and even FPGA-based handheld gaming systems that can sometimes be hard to tell apart. The upcoming Atari GameStation Go sets itself apart with what we're relatively sure is a first for portable gaming: built-in trackball, spinner, and number pad controls. Gamers who cut their teeth after 1990 or so might not remember an era when arcade and home console games often relied on controls that went beyond the usual D-pad/joystick and action buttons. But there are plenty of classics from the early days of electronic gaming that just don't feel right unless you have a trackball (Centipede, Missile Command, Crystal Castles), spinner (Arkanoid, Tempest), or number pad (Star Raiders, Intellivision sports games). Many modern retro re-releases try to re-create these kinds of games with more standardized joystick and button controls, but the results can be limited at best and unplayable at worst. The Atari GameStation Go, on the other hand, seems to be aiming for maximum retro authenticity by packing a whole host of control options into its $150, 7-inch display portable. While a prototype shell for the GameStation Go was briefly shown at the 2024 Consumer Electronics Show a year ago, this year's CES is the official announcement party for a playable version of the GameStation Go. 18. One of the main features that has made Disney Dreamlight Valley one of the most successful cozy games in recent years is the element of nostalgia that the game provides for players who grew up adoring Disney's beloved characters. From Pixar favorites to classic Disney stars like Mickey Mouse himself, there are many different characters to unlock and befriend in Disney Dreamlight Valley. For some players, the addition of Disney Princesses in the game is the most exciting feature, bringing with them all sorts of reward items and objects to collect in Scrooge's Store. 20. The Super Retro Champ plays classic 16-bit titles from the Super Nintendo and ***** Genesis. | Image: My Arcade First announced at CES four years ago, My Arcade’s Super Retro Champ was a chunky handheld that could play classic 16-bit titles using original ***** Genesis and Super Nintendo cartridges. The console didn’t end up launching, but at CES 2025, My Arcade is reviving it with an expected release later this year. The design and functionality of the Super Retro Champ appears nearly identical to what My Arcade revealed in 2020, but as with many things now, it’s expected to be slightly more expensive. Instead of $110, the handheld is now priced at $149.99. Image: My Arcade Super Nintendo cartridges end up slightly sticking out of the top of the handheld, while ***** Genesis carts sit flush in its bottom slot. Unlike the Analogue Pocket, which can play retro titles using cartridges or ROM files, the Super Retro Champ is similar to the ModRetro Chromatic and sticks to carts. It’s got a slot on the top for SNES games (that end up slightly sticking out) and a second on the bottom for Genesis carts. It’s also compatible with cartridges released for the international versions of those classic consoles, including Super Famicom and Mega Drive games. Image: My Arcade It’s unlikely you’re ever going to find a pocket large enough to carry the Super Retro Champ. With a six-inch screen surrounded by generous bezels plus a directional pad and action buttons on either side, the Super Retro Champ doesn’t prioritize portability. You can use it as a handheld with “hours of uninterrupted gameplay” from its rechargeable battery, My Arcade says, but it’s better suited for playing while propped up on a table using its folding stand, a pair of connected controllers, and a power adapter. If six inches feels too cramped for you and another player, there’s also an HDMI port on the back of the Super Retro Champ for connecting it to a TV. Just don’t expect to enjoy your favorite 16-bit titles in HD or expect them to look as good as they did on the old CRT TV you grew up with. View the full article
  21. Illustration: The Verge Lenovo’s mysterious “future of gaming handhelds” event at CES delivered confirmation this week that Microsoft is combining “the best of Xbox and Windows together” for handhelds. Microsoft’s VP of Next Generation, Jason Ronald, spoke to my colleague Sean Hollister after the event to reveal that not only are big changes coming to the Windows handheld experience but also “you’re going to see a lot of stuff as early as this year.” I’ve been writing for more than a year about how Microsoft needs to overhaul Windows on handhelds and use an Xbox OS UI on top, keeping the complexity of the Windows desktop hidden away. That sounds exactly like what Microsoft is about to do. “I would say it’s bringing the best of Xbox and Windows together, because we have spent the last 20 years building a world-class operating system, but it’s really locked to the console,” says Ronald. “What we’re doing is we’re really focused on how do we bring those experiences for both players and developers to the broader Windows ecosystem.” Ronald says Microsoft’s “goal is to deliver an Xbox experience that puts your content front and center, and not the Windows desktop that you have today.” For this to happen in... 25. The two classic Command and Conquer games - Tiberian Dawn and Red Alert - are still, to this day, my favorites in the entire RTS genre. But there are levels of detail and strategic complexity that Westwood's pioneering hits just can't accommodate. For greater depth and realism, you could turn to something like Warno, which feels closer to a military simulator, or 'milsim.' But again, you may hit a problem - there's a very steep learning curve, and the amount of units, mechanics, and idiosyncrasies can become overwhelming. Somewhere between these two poles, the pick-up-and-play fun of Command and Conquer and the magnitude of Warno, is where we find Broken Arrow. A real-time strategy game that mixes realism and playability, it's already been wishlisted on Steam nearing a million times. Read the rest of the story...
