  1. A new set of leaks about Amphoreus in Honkai: Star Rail has emerged and they contain what seems like a devastating spoiler for one of its most iconic characters, even if the rumors embrace two different figures. The popular turn-based RPG by HoYoverse is currently going through the second half of Version 3.0, a large patch that introduced Amphoreus as an explorable destination in the game, as well as Remembrance as a playable Path through the Trailblazer and Aglaea in Honkai: Star Rail. During the patch’s new main story missions, players got involved with The Eternal Land and its struggles. View the full article

  4. Like many Dungeons and Dragons fans, I'm currently part-way through a close reading of the new Monster Manual. The new, high-CR monsters have me excited to draft some new encounters, and I've spotted many balance tweaks that warm my Dungeon Master heart. However, there's one single sentence in the introduction that I take huge issue with. It's the vaguest, most contradictory piece of advice that I've seen in a D&D book for some time. 6. Cheery mom-and-pop computer game business Valve have created a new Steamworks page for their policy about in-game adverts and advertising in general, with a troubleshooter's list of dos and don'ts for developers. As Graham pointed out to me just now, Valve's handling of such things hasn't really changed over the past few years, but I can't pass up the opportunity to chew the **** a little about the intriguingly murky, slippery-slope business of turning your virtual world into an ad platform. Also, I had already written this article by the time he pointed that out to me, and I can't bear to send all my precious words to the abyss. Read more View the full article
  7. The creator of Diablo says he feels that modern action RPGs level up the player too quickly. In an interview with Videogamer, David Brevik – who was senior designer and lead programmer on Diablo, and project and design lead on Diablo 2 – criticised modern takes on the genre for rewarding players too quickly. One of the main criticisms levelled at Diablo 3 (which Brevik didn’t work on) is that players can reach level 70 within a matter of 3-4 hours depending on how they play the game, much faster than in previous games in the series. 9. It's hard to imagine how XCOM 2, Firaxis' peerless tactics game, could possibly be any more nerve-racking. But what if, instead of turn-based, it all took place in real time? What if you had to make all of those life and death decisions on the fly? After five years of early-access development, one brutally realistic RTS answers those questions. Combining the ground-level, moment-to-moment combat of Company of Heroes with the milsim aesthetics of Arma, it's already accumulated near-flawless reviews, and now it's finally deployed into 1.0. 10. What are the best Civ 7 mods? One of the most important questions around a game release is whether it will have mod support. Given the extensive mod community around previous entries in the Civilization series, we hope the same can be said for Civ 7. Civilization 7 may not be officially out for everyone except advanced access players so far, but that's enough time to question whether any mods have surfaced yet. We've got the latest info on whether there is official Civ 7 mod support, what mods are available in the strategy game so far, and our wishlist for future Civ 7 mods. Read the rest of the story... 16. Cheery mom-and-pop computer game business Valve have updated their rules about advertising both outside and inside Steam games, with a troubleshooter's list of dos and don'ts for developers. Briefly, it's fine to feature ads inside games if it's "appropriate within the context of the game". Not fine: the use of paid advertising as a business model, as with ports of mobile games that make you watch an advert to unlock stuff, or that dole out rewards for willingly filling your eyes with footage of, say, crypto investors pitching a new wellness diet. If your game makes use of such strategies on other platforms, explain Valve, you will need to strip them out before selling them on Steam. They suggest switching to a single-purchase model or free-to-play with microtransactions instead. Read more View the full article

  22. Of all the Pokémon currently available to catch or evolve in Pokémon GO, perhaps none are more popular than the Eeveelutions. These fan favorites are always sought after, and each of them evolves in specific ways depending on which Eeveelution you want to end up with. Umbreon, the Dark type Eeveelution, is a particularly beloved variant. Its ****** and yellow (or ****** and blue, if you’re lucky enough to get a shiny) color scheme is striking, and it comes with a powerful move set that makes it an asset to any Pokémon trainer. How to get Umbreon in Pokémon GO If you want to get Umbreon in Pokémon GO, there are two methods that will guarantee its addition to your Pokédex. Here’s how you can get Umbreon. Method #1 - Naming tricks Screenshot by Destructoid If you’re relatively new to Pokémon GO and this is your first attempt to get an Umbreon at your side, then you’re in luck, because there is a staggeringly easy way to guarantee your Eevee will evolve into Umbreon. All you need to do is give it a specific name. There’s a name for each Eeveelution: Vaporeon - Rainer Jolteon - Sparky Flareon - Pyro Umbreon - Tamao Espeon - Sakura Leafeon - Linnea Glaceon - Rea Sylveon - Kira To change your Eevee's name, select the Eevee you want to evolve from within the list of captured Pokémon, then select their name. You can change the name of any Pokémon to anything you like, but for this purpose, you need to change your Eevee's name to “Tamao”. Provided this is your first time attempting this trick, the silhouette next to the “Evolve” button should change to one that looks like Umbreon. You can now evolve with the guarantee of getting your very first Umbreon. Method #2 - Walking to evolve Screenshot by Destructoid The whole premise of Pokémon GO is to get you out of the house and walking, and the second way to get an Umbreon really plays on that fact. If you’ve already used the above-mentioned naming trick, you’ll need to go for a really long walk. Or lots of short ones, they all add up in the end. To complete the “proper” way to get an Umbreon, you’ll need to set an Eevee as your buddy and then walk 10 kilometers. I know, it’s a really long way, but it’s a good job that Umbreon is so cute. Right? Anyway, once you’ve walked the required 10 kilometers, you’ll then need to wait until nighttime before you evolve your Eevee. Nighttime in Pokémon GO is from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. local time. This means that wherever you are in the world, as long as it’s after 8 p.m. where you are, you should be safe to evolve your Eevee and get an Umbreon. 24. Valve is banning products that rely on in-game advertising from Steam, as it sets out some new rules for developers on the storefront. According to the Half-Life and Counter-Strike maker, games cannot force you to watch ads to play them, and any existing games that use this model will have to switch to new monetization systems or be removed from Steam. Valve will still allow for some forms of advertising, however, as long that advertising does not directly impede on the experience of the player. Read the rest of the story... 25. The RPS review of Firaxis' grand strategy Civilisation 7 is currently in progress. We didn't get early code, and our usual method of sidestepping this issue by rapidly entering the numbers and letters spelled out by our extensive collection of longhorn beetles bore no fruit. Rest assured: it's coming. Sin reviewed it for EuroVega though, awarding it two out of a possible five beetles. While she found it largely dull, she did mention that "its UI has enough potential to make some of my complaints feel patchable". Firaxis seem to agree, putting out a statement last Friday following feedback from the game's advanced access *******. Read more View the full article
