  1. Gardens of WA: John Doncon and Janice Foulkes-Taylor’s garden is a must-see for every Perth plant-lover Gardens of WA: John Doncon and Janice Foulkes-Taylor’s garden is a must-see for every Perth plant-lover To the uninitiated, growing a garden amounts to nothing more or less than chucking plants in the ground and hoping they stay alive. And I think the reason I cannot seem to stop talking about gardening, thinking about gardening, ranting endlessly about gardening, is that this is just so far from the truth. Gardening, as any plant-lover knows, touches all aspects of your life, leaving many small marks of joy, connection, and beauty. It offers a way to commemorate loved ones, to rekindle memories from childhood. It is a creative outlet, a form of pleasurable escape. It is exercise, it is therapy, it is intellectually stimulating. It is something to share with the people you love, but equally something that you can do on your own, without ever feeling lonely. It is, simply put, about so much more than the plants. If anyone knows this, it is Janice Foulkes-Taylor and her husband John, whose enthusiasm for growing things eclipses even mine, as evidenced by the fact that for the last 17 years they have been growing one of the largest and most impressively beautiful gardens I have encountered. “We’ve planted hundreds of plants on the property, from exotics to native trees and shrubs, bulbs and succulents — all sorts of plants,” Janice says. “Originally we were just going to have the area around the house, which is quite a big garden anyway, but as time went on we took down old fences and expanded the garden. John always wanted roses — he loves roses, he has about 120 — and irises. He wanted red roses so he could pick me a red rose and bring it in to me.” Janice and John’s garden is expansive and eclectic, filled with rambling cottage garden perennials, native shrubs, archways, fruit orchards, strawberry patches, towering sweetcorn, fields of flowers, and everywhere, trees, trees, trees. Credit: Riley Churchman/The West *********** The property — which, in 2008, was in decline with dead lawns and a bad reticulation system — has been brought fully back to life thanks to Janice and John. The addition of countless flowers, trees and shrubs has attracted wildlife (bandicoots, birds, insects and lizards), and every season brings a new show of colours, blooms and beauty. “I think our garden is really a four-season garden, and I love that about it,” says Janice. Camera IconJohn Doncon and Janice Foulkes-Taylor in their garden. Credit: Riley Churchman/The West *********** “There’s always something in the garden that’s flowering, there’s always something happening.” This is a garden every Perth plant-lover must see. Happily, Janice and John are more than willing to share the spoils of their labour. “We didn’t grow and develop the garden with the idea of necessarily sharing it with other people,” Janice explains. We regularly have garden groups and have had weddings and other events, family events, on the property. John and I both feel that it’s been a joy to create and build a garden, but an even greater joy to share it rather than keeping it to ourselves”. 2. Are You Rich or Just Upper Middle Class? Here’s The Net Worth And Income It Takes To Be Considered Wealthy Are You Rich or Just Upper Middle Class? Here’s The Net Worth And Income It Takes To Be Considered Wealthy You might live in a 5,000-square-foot home in a gated neighborhood. You drive a luxury SUV, vacation somewhere new every summer — maybe Italy, maybe Bora Bora — and swipe your card at Whole Foods without ever checking the total. On paper, your life looks rich. But are you? That’s where things get blurry. Because in today’s economy, being rich isn’t just about looking the part—it’s about how your income and net worth stack up against everyone else. And depending on where you live and how you’ve built your wealth, you might still fall squarely in the upper middle class. Don’t Miss: Geography plays a huge role in lifestyle inflation and how “wealthy” you feel. In San Francisco, a $300,000 income might buy you a two-bedroom condo and a decent latte habit. In the Midwest, it might make you feel like a millionaire. According to Pew Research, middle-income households earn between $56,600 and $169,800 a year, depending on household size and local cost of living. Many sources, including GoBankingRates, place upper middle class income somewhere between $106,000 and $150,000, though that too varies by region. According to a 2024 SmartAsset study, the income needed to join the top 1% of earners in the U.S. is at least $787,712. In states like Connecticut, Massachusetts, and California, however, the threshold climbs past $1 million a year. In Massachusetts alone, top 1% earners bring in at least $1.13 million. Trending: Maker of the $60,000 foldable home has 3 factory buildings, 600+ houses built, and big plans to solve housing — this is your last chance to become an investor for $0.80 per share. When it comes to net worth, the Federal Reserve’s latest Survey of Consumer Finances reports that the median net worth for U.S. households is around $192,900, while middle-income households typically hover around $480,000. For upper middle class, the estimate ranges between $500,000 and $2 million, depending on age and assets—data cited by analysts like Financial Samurai, who aggregate from Federal Reserve studies and IRS data. So, what’s considered rich? According to the Federal Reserve’s triennial data, the top 10% of households have a net worth starting at $1.9 million. The top 1% households exceed $13 million. See Also: Nancy Pelosi Invested $5 Million In An AI Company Last Year — Here’s How You Can Invest In Multiple Pre-IPO AI Startups With Just $1,000. Being rich isn’t just about hitting a certain number—it’s about how you manage it, grow it, and what that money actually lets you do. Two families could earn the same amount. One is living paycheck to paycheck with luxury tastes and high debt. The other has investments, savings, and options. Wealth isn’t just how much you make or own—it’s about freedom, control, and long-term security. If your net worth is under $2 million and your income is under $600,000, statistically, you’re probably not rich—you’re upper middle class. And in today’s world, that still means you’re doing very well. But if you’re still asking the question, chances are you’re somewhere in that gray zone—the one where life looks rich but the numbers keep you just shy of the line. 3. How to Kill Stingrays in Helldivers 2 How to Kill Stingrays in Helldivers 2 The Illuminate’s latest fleet has emerged from the Meridian Singularity and is heading straight towards Super Earth. For the first time in Helldivers 2, an enemy jet has appeared on the battlefield, testing players to their limits. The Stingray is a brand new Illuminate unit capable of performing some deadly strafing runs. The jet is indeed fast, but it’s not impossible to take it down. The Illuminate is only a handful of planets away from Super Earth, so Helldivers must understand the weaknesses of these new enemies. An in-game message has confirmed that it is impossible to stop the Illuminate from reaching Super Earth, so players must prepare themselves for a war. Stingrays are fast jets, but they have some weaknesses Illuminate Stingrays usually patrol and scan the surface for targets. Once they spot a Helldiver, it performs a maneuver and prepares for a strafing run. It performs a heavy plasma fire in a long, straight line that can be seen on the battlefield. Its path is highlighted, and players only have a few seconds to avoid getting hit by its attack. It’s impossible to hit the Stringray when it is moving at a fast pace. The only time players can hit it is when they are strafing. At this point, various heavy weapons can be used to take it out since it only has a medium armor, but their effectiveness depends on their lock-on time: FAF-14 Spear can take one down in a single shot, but the launcher needs some time to get a lock-on, making this not the best weapon against Stingrays. StA-X3 W.A.S.P. Launcher has a faster lock-on time and can destroy a Stingray in a single shot. E/MG-101 HMG Emplacement can destroy the wings of the Stingray. RL-77 Airburst Rocket Launcher can also take down the unit, but will require a lot of skill as it doesn’t exactly have a lock-on mechanism. If you are not interested in taking down the Stingray using an explosive Stratagem, you can even use some medium-armour-penetrating support weapons, such as the MG-43 Machine Gun, the MG-206 Heavy Machine Gun, the LAS-98 Laser Cannon, and the AC-8 Autocannon with APHET rounds. Helldivers 2 players can also use Stingray to take out other Illuminate units The Illuminate faction is constantly evolving (Image via Arrowhead Game Studios) The Stingray has a pair of rapid-firing plasma repeaters, which don’t instantly kill Helldivers but take away a massive chunk of the health bar. However, the strafing run can be used to take out other Illuminate units. If players somehow manage to get hordes of enemies into the Stingray’s path, the jet will take them out. Pro tip: Make sure you don’t stand where the Stingray falls because its debris will certainly kill you if its strafing run doesn’t. The Stingray is among many other Illuminate units that have recently appeared on the battlefield. This fleet has emerged from the Meridian Singularity, and since they are so close to Super Earth, it is difficult for Helldivers to slow them down. The Illuminate faction that players were fighting earlier was only a small section of the entire faction. Now, Illuminate is slowly revealing why they are known as the deadliest race in the Helldivers universe. 5. They Just Made Darth Vader Drop the F-bomb in Fortnite They Just Made Darth Vader Drop the F-bomb in Fortnite Fortnite is a teen-rated game known for making almost every pop-culture reference available on our floating little planet. Recently, they added a tribute to the Late James Earl Jones via a controversial AI voice model for Darth Vader from Star Wars. To be fair, that isn’t the real problem. Apparently, players found a way to make the AI model speak offensive words, especially the lord-behold, F-Bomb. The Star Wars saga has no profanity, which makes it special. Yet, the community did its best to join the dark side in its own way. Darth Vader truly shows his Sith origins through Fortnite Darth Vader finally showed his true colors? | Image Credit: Epic Games. There was a bug in Fortnite that caused Darth Vader to say the F-Bomb if the AI voice model was tricked. However, he wasn’t added to the game to preach profanity; rather, the idea was more wholesome. It was added so that Fortnite and Star Wars fans can ask him questions about the Force, the Empire, and other geeky questions. Whatever players asked, Darth Vader would answer them and state his opinions on it. Pretty cool feature, but everything has a loophole. One such loophole was found by streamer, Loserfruit, who said a combination of words that make the AI model say the cuss words. It kind of shocked the streamer, as it wasn’t expected. Soon after, the clip went viral, and many started to use it for fun. However, it was disrespectful too, if you use your brain. This bug appeared in the eyes of the developers and was quickly fixed. They know the game is rated for teens, and such words aren’t allowed. Even more than Fortnite, it must have freaked out Disney more, as their entire brand is dependent on kids. If it stayed, oh boy, it would have caused a drama that would be written in history. Though it is a bit funny that Darth Vader dropped his first F- Bomb. As they say, there’s a first time for everything. Darth Vader knows how to be a top-tier evil character F-Bomb isn’t he only thing Darth Vader dropped in Fortnite. As it seems, without profanity, he is good enough to roast people. There is an instance where Darth Vader gives break-up advice. Probably one of the best ones, too. Darth Vader gives advice on breaking up… pic.twitter.com/XKmlihWyBW — JustinAB (@AciDicGamerz) May 16, 2025 A player complains that their duo partners are not enough and holding them back, so they ask Darth Vader for advice on breaking up with them. Darth Vader answers in a cryptic way, so they ask for more information. Immediately, Darth Vader roasts him by saying, “Is your understanding so limited?” Didn’t imagine seeing Darth Vader roasting players in 2025, but that’s just amazing. However, after roasting, he does give some fine advice that should be in everyone’s books for future purposes. In the words of AI, Darth Vader: Exploit their vulnerabilities, shatter their confidence, and crush their spirit. That has to be the best attempt to recreate Darth Vader as an AI rendition. Everything checks out, from twisted remarks to an extremely sadistic personality. The only out-of-character element was the swear words, but it has been dealt with. Did you try out the bug yourself in Fortnite? Have you experienced any funny events with AI Darth Vader? Tell us about it in the comments below, we don’t judge. 6. Cameron Green cracks ton in World Test final boost Cameron Green cracks ton in World Test final boost Cameron Green is warming up with gritty resolve for his potential World Test Championship final assignment, hammering another back-to-the-wall century for Gloucestershire that suggests he’s in fine shape for the ‘ultimate’ battle against South Africa. Returning after a six months lay-off and surgery to cure back woes, his battling ton at Bristol on Saturday was his second championship century since a mystery Gloucestershire benefactor paid for him to have the chance to bat himself back into form while enabling the county’s fans to enjoy watching a potential world beater. If Green does go on to shine for his country in June’s Lord’s final, then a word of thanks may be due to the Kent attack for this was the second time in a month that the 25-year-old has flayed them. He scored 112 on his Gloucester debut at Canterbury when the team were in a spot of bother and repeated the trick on Saturday when coming to the crease with the home side teetering on 4-139 in response to Kent’s first-innings 424. Green had made single-figure scores in his previous four innings, and needed this boost, scoring 102no from 150 ******, with 12 fours and a six, to help steer Gloucester to 4-307 by the close. It was so impressive that the Bristol denizens even began chanting the Aussie’s name. “It was amazing,” Green said of the reception. “I definitely wanted a good score in front of the fans. They’ve come out in force the two games I’ve been here, and I’ve never experienced a crowd chanting my name before, so that was awesome to experience, a really cool moment.” It could be that Green ends up in a battle with Beau Webster for a place in the Lord’s XI but the good news for Australia is the Tasmanian’s playing pretty well too for Warwickshire. Webster made 41 on a seamer-assisted pitch at Edgbaston and then took 2-33 off his nine overs, shining amid the home side’s struggle against Hampshire. The big championship story of the day was the return for Lancashire, at 42 years young, of Jimmy Anderson, who quickly got back into the groove at Old Trafford by indulging in his favourite pastime — dismissing Australians. With just his 18th delivery, he clean bowled Derbyshire opener, Tasmanian import Caleb Jewell, for 18 — from the James Anderson End, of course — and ended with 2-24 off his five overs as Lancs reduced the visitors to 4-112 in response to their 458. Anderson had been absent from the first five games after a calf injury, but after Jewell drove him through the covers for four, he switched to around the wicket and clipped the top of the Aussie’s off-stump for his opening scalp of 2025. Elsewhere, captain Peter Handscomb again led from the front for second-division leaders Leicestershire, scoring 87 off 202 ****** at Lord’s against Middlesex. In the first division, reigning county champions Surrey took control against Yorkshire at the Oval thanks in part to their *********** new boy Kurtis Patterson, who made 85 off 140 ******, with 11 fours and a six, to help them to 7-384, a first-innings lead of 129. 9. Hauser sprints to triathlon victory, leads world series Hauser sprints to triathlon victory, leads world series Australia’s Matt Hauser has won a sprint finish to secure his first World Triathlon Championship Series win of the season in Japan and go to the top of the standings. Hauser held off Portugal’s Vasco Vilaca in a thrilling race on Saturday, making him the man to catch after two of the eight races which culminate with the Championship Finals on home soil in Wollongong this October. The result adds to a strong start to Hauser’s 2025 season, following his silver at the opener in Abu Dhabi, where he was edged out in a sprint showdown by Kiwi star Hayden Wilde – who has subsequently suffered multiple broken bones in a bike ******. “I couldn’t settle for third, second, or anything less than first until I’d given everything to the line,” said 27-year-old Hauser after his win. “I tried to produce a bit of that Aussie spirit today and it got me home first, which I’m super glad about. “Wollongong World Championships this year – it’s the year of the Aussies. Hopefully we can go back and put on a show for you all. “It should be a great year ahead. It’s my first Olympic distance World Triathlon Championship Series win so I’m really proud of that.” The Queenslander was at his trademark best in the water, emerging second from the 750m swim and he was among the leaders coming off the rain-slick bike course. Hauser, Vilaca and Brazil’s Miguel Hidalgo broke clear and were left to slug it out for the medals over the final 2.5kms of the 10km run leg. With 1km to go, Vilaca surged and Hidalgo was unable to respond, but Hauser dug deep before launching his own move and pulling clear down the blue carpet. “I learned a few lessons in Abu Dhabi, not to go to early and burn my matches,” Hauser said. Hauser’s heroics capped off a strong day for the Australians in both the elite and para triathlon events. Luke Willian opened his season with a solid showing, finishing 12th, while Ellie Hoitink was 34th in the women’s race, won by Jeanna Lehair (LUX). Earlier in the day, Lauren Parker (PTWC) and Anu Francis (PTS2) both claimed gold medals in the World Triathlon Para Series, making it back-to-back wins to start their seasons. Jack Howell (PTS4) secured a hard-fought silver medal, just edged out in a dramatic sprint finish by Martin Schulz (GER), while Maggie Sandles (PTVI) with guide Lauren Sprague, and Grace Brimelow (PTS5) bagged bronze medals. 10. Palestinians could be ‘forced into three controlled zones in Gaza’ under Israeli plan, report claims Palestinians could be ‘forced into three controlled zones in Gaza’ under Israeli plan, report claims Israel is preparing to divide Gaza’s residents into three tightly-controlled strips of land unless ****** accepts a ceasefire deal in a matter of days, reports citing leaked plans suggest. ****** and Israel resumed ceasefire talks on Saturday in Qatar, as the Israeli military ramped up a bombing campaign that has killed hundreds of people in the past 72 hours, and launched a major new ground offensive in the Gaza Strip. Benjamin Netanyahu’s military ordered Palestinians to move to the south of Gaza earlier this week, as it began seizing control of further parts of the Strip as “part of preparations” for the advance it dubbed Operation Gideon’s Chariots. But in a new development – reported on the anniversary of the Nakba, the “catastrophe” in which an estimated 750,000 Palestinians were displaced from their homes in 1948 – further plans to carve up Gaza and its people emerged on Saturday. A map leaked by diplomats to The Times, reportedly shows plans for three tightly controlled strips of civilian land in southern, central and northern Gaza, separated by four exclusively military zones. On Saturday, the Israeli Army released footage said to show military operations in northern Gaza. Defence minister Israel Katz said a ground offensive had been launched in Gaza. (via REUTERS) Under the plans, titled “Stage Three: the complete takeover of Gaza”, Palestinians would be forbidden to move between the strips without permission, potentially separating people from their land and homes, foreign firms briefed on the plans and tasked with distributing humanitarian aid told the outlet. According to The Times, roads and infrastructure are already being built on the remains of people’s homes, with the clearing of land needed for the new and expanded military zones expected to take at least three weeks. The Israeli military neither confirmed nor denied the plans, according to the outlet. The Independent has sought further information from Israel. Palestinians make their way with belongings as they flee their homes, after Israeli air strikes in the northern Gaza Strip (REUTERS/Mahmoud Issa) It comes a month after Israel announced plans for a new military strip in southern Gaza named the Morag Corridor. Observers at Goldsmiths, University of London’s Forensic Architecture studio said on Friday that Israel had destroyed dozens of homes in the remains of Rafah city and built several new military outposts. And last week, Mr Netanyahu said Israel’s security cabinet had approved a plan to “conquer” Gaza and establish a “sustained presence” there, in which the “population will be moved, for its own protection”. Israeli officials had suggested the so-called Gideon’s Chariot offensive would begin in earnest once Donald Trump’s four-day tour of the Middle East had concluded. The US president left the region on Friday, without having visited Israel. On Saturday, defence minister Israel Katz said Gideon’s Chariots was under way and was being led with “great force” by Israel’s military. While Mr Trump issued a warning that “a lot of people are starving” in Gaza, without mentioning Israel’s blockade, the US president’s apparently sympathetic tone was tempered further as reports emerged suggesting his administration was considering a plan to permanently relocate as many as a million Gazans to Libya. White House sources told NBC News that the idea had been discussed with Libya’s leadership and was being seriously considered. In exchange, Washington would release billions of dollars of funds to Libya that the US froze more than a decade ago. Mr Trump first suggested relocating Gaza’s 2.3 million inhabitants back in February, drawing fierce criticism from the international community. He also spoke of turning Gaza into the “Riviera of the Middle East”. At least 300 people have been killed in Gaza since Thursday morning, as one of the deadliest phases of Israel’s bombardment continued for a third consecutive day. Flames rise from northern Gaza, as seen from the Israeli side of the Israel-Gaza border on Saturday (REUTERS) ************ health authorities said at least 150 people had been killed in the past 24 hours, with many hundreds more being treated in hospital, and countless others still buried under rubble. More than 3,000 have been killed since Israel broke a January ceasefire on 18 March. Israel insists its offensive is aimed at defeating ****** and securing the release of the remaining 58 hostages seized in the group’s cross-border incursion on 7 October 2023, which sparked the war and left 1,200 people in Israel dead. Israel believes as many as 23 of the hostages in Gaza are still alive, although Israeli authorities have expressed concern for the status of three of them. On Saturday afternoon, an Israeli strike killed at least four children in the Jabaliya refugee camp in the north, according to al-Awda Hospital, which received the bodies. Seven others were wounded in the strike, which hit a house. A later strike in Jabaliya killed four, the hospital said. “This is unacceptable. Until when? Until we all die?” said Naji Awaisa, as he and others fled the camp with their belongings. Palestinians look at smoke rising following an Israeli airstrike near Jabalia, in the northern Gaza Strip on Friday (AP Photo/Jehad Alshrafi) Airstrikes around Deir al-Balah in central Gaza killed 14 people, with the bodies arriving at al-Aqsa hospital. One strike on a house killed eight people, including parents and four children. A strike also landed outside a school sheltering displaced people in Gaza City, killing four, health officials said. Gaza is in the third month of an Israeli blockade with no food, water, fuel or other goods entering the territory of more than 2 million people. Food security experts say Gaza will be in famine if the blockade is not lifted. Meanwhile, tens of thousands of people marched through London to mark the anniversary of Nakba. The Palestine Solidarity Campaign said the march was intended to “mark the 77th anniversary of the 1948 Nakba and demand our government take action to end the ongoing ethnic cleansing of Palestinians from their land”. 13. Trump endorses idea that Supreme Court ruling blocking his deportations under Alien Enemies Act is ‘********’ Trump endorses idea that Supreme Court ruling blocking his deportations under Alien Enemies Act is ‘********’ President Donald Trump endorsed the idea that the United States Supreme Court had placed an “******** injunction” on him by temporarily blocking his administration’s ability to deport Venezuelans, accused of being gang members, without due process, while litigation on the matter plays out in lower courts. On Truth Social on Saturday, Trump reposted two posts made by attorney Mike Davis, a close Trump ally and the founder of the Article III project, calling the court’s recent decision “********” and claiming it was “heading down a perilous path” by not allowing Trump to continue a constitutionally questionable action. “The Supreme Court still has an ******** injunction on the President of the United States, preventing him from commanding military operations to expel these foreign terrorists,” Davis wrote. President Donald Trump endorsed the idea that the Supreme Court had violated law by refusing to allow his administration to deport people under the Alien Enemies Act (AP) He continued, “The President should house these terrorists near the Chevy Chase Country Club, with daytime release.” Chevy Chase Country Club is located in Maryland, near the homes of Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Brett Kavanaugh. The Supreme Court is the highest court in the nation and has the final say on legal disputes involving constitutional or federal law challenges. The court told the Trump administration on Friday it would not allow it to resume deporting Venezuelans accused of belonging to a gang under the Alien Enemies Act while litigation continues in lower courts. In their decision, the justices flagged concerns about the administration bypassing due process rights. Trump raged at the justices for not allowing his Department of Homeland Security to proceed with deportations under the act, calling it “bad” and “dangerous.” His recent comments are a distinct reversal from comments he made last year, praising the court when they ruled in his favor. Saturday’s endorsement of the idea that the Supreme Court, the ultimate decider of law, was carrying out an “********” act on him by not allowing him to do something that lower courts have also consistently ruled against, is part of a recent trend. Trump has lashed out at federal judges for ruling against him in dozens of cases – an act that Chief Justice John Roberts warned against (AFP via Getty Images) Trump and his administration have been accused of defying federal judges’ rulings – most notably not facilitating the return of Kilmar Abrego Garcia despite the Supreme Court directing the administration to do so. The president has personally lashed out at judges who have ruled against him, asserting they are “rogue” or “activists.” Roberts and Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson have both warned that attacking judges is harmful to the independence of the judiciary. 16. One person dead after explosion damages fertility clinic in California One person dead after explosion damages fertility clinic in California Police and firefighters are investigating an explosion that killed one person and damaged a fertility clinic in the tiny California city of Palm Springs. The incident is being investigated as a possible car explosion. Authorities have not disclosed a motive. A statement by Palm Springs police chief Andy Mills said the blast “appears to be an intentional act of violence” and that several buildings were damaged, some severely. The city of Palm Springs said on Saturday in a social media post that the explosion happened at 11am local time and that residents were being asked to avoid the area around North Indian Canyon Drive near East Tachevah Drive. Investigators from the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives were on their way to the scene to help assess what happened. Firefighters attended the scene (Nima Tabrizi via AP) Dr Maher Abdallah, who runs the American Reproductive Centres fertility clinic, confirmed that his clinic was damaged. He told The Associated Press in a phone interview that all of his staff were safe and accounted for. The explosion damaged the practice’s office space, where it conducts consultations with patients, but left the IVF lab and all of the stored embryos there unharmed. “I really have no clue what happened,” Dr Abdallah said. “Thank God today happened to be a day that we have no patients.” Nima Tabrizi, 37, of Santa Monica, said he was inside a cannabis dispensary nearby when he felt a massive explosion. “The building just shook, and we go outside and there’s massive cloud smoke,” Mr Tabrizi said. “Crazy explosion. It felt like a bomb went off. … We went up to the scene, and we saw human remains.” Aerial footage showed a burned-out car in a car park behind the building that housed the fertility clinic’s office space. Rhino Williams, 47, was chatting with customers at a restaurant he helps manage inside the Skylark Hotel just over a block away from the scene when he heard a huge *****. He said everything rattled and he sprinted to the scene to see if anyone was in need of help, thinking a helicopter might have crashed. He saw a large dark grey plume of smoke and covered his nose with his shirt as he smelled burning plastic and rubber. He said he saw a building had “blown out” into the street, with bricks and debris scattered everywhere, and spotted a car’s front axle on fire in the building’s car park. 19. Rumors Suggest You Might Want to Keep Your Switch 2 Docked Rumors Suggest You Might Want to Keep Your Switch 2 Docked We’ve learned a lot about the Switch 2 since Nintendo announced it in back in January. We know how basic specs compare on paper to the original Switch; we know that many physical game carts won’t actually have the games on them; and we know what games to expect this year. While there’s still more to learn about the console before it officially launches next month, some new leaks have provided fresh insights into how the Switch 2 actually performs. Digital Foundry reports that it can definitively confirm leaks surrounding the Switch 2’s hardware, answering many of the remaining questions that Nintendo and Nvidia have left a mystery thus far. The outlet highlights the key hardware upgrades for the company’s new console, and explains how there are some major performance boosts—especially in docked mode. Switch 2 is more powerful, especially when docked Digital Foundry highlights that Nintendo calls the SoC (system on a chip) in both the Switch 2 and OG Switch “custom,” but notes that the original Switch’s SoC was really a “vanilla” chip. The Switch 2’s hardware, on the other hand, really is made solely with Nintendo’s console in mind. That means it should be better optimized for the company’s unique situation of needing to offer console-quality game play that can adapt to handheld mode. The new custom Nvidia T239 has an eight-core ARM Cortext A87C CPU, compared to the four-core ARM Cortext A57 in the Switch 1. Digital Foundry reports that the original Switch reserved one CPU core for operating system features and left the other three open to developers, while the Switch 2 reserves six of its cores for developers, and uses two for OS tasks. CPU specs are still unclear: The original Switch had a fixed CPU clock speed (the processing rate of the CPU) of 1020MHz whether it was docked or in handheld mode. The new Switch runs at 1101MHz in handheld, but 998MHz when docked. Digital Foundry isn’t sure why this is the case, though it does speculate it has something to do with memory bandwidth drops that would have an impact on CPU performance. The maximum theoretical clock speed here is 1.7GHz, compared to 1.785GHz on the Switch. GPU specs make more sense at this time. The new Ampere GPU has a typical clock speed of 1007MHz when docked, and 561MHz in handheld mode, with a maximum clock speed of 1.4GHz. The original Switch’s Maxwell GPU ran at 768MHz when docked and up to 460MHz in handheld mode, with a maximum of 921MHz. An important metric to note here is TFLOPS, which measures the rate of performance for a GPU. When docked, the Switch 2’s GPU is rated for 3.072 TFLOPs, but drops to 1.71 TFLOPs in handheld mode. Digital Foundry makes the point that you can’t necessarily evaluate a GPU’s potential from TFLOPs alone, and that it’ll be up to developers to show us how well games can perform. We already knew that the Switch 2 offers 12GB of RAM (102GBps when docked and 68GBps in handheld). Digital Foundry now says it can confirm how Nintendo is allocating that memory: The OS uses 3GB of RAM, which leaves 9GB for running games. It’s a stark comparison with the Switch 1, which only shipped with 4GB of RAM, with 3.2GB of that allocated to developers. That means the Switch 2 nearly triples the amount of memory game makers can use. GameChat takes up a lot of resources GameChat is one on Nintendo’s “big” new features for the Switch 2. Coming to market a mere 22 years after Xbox Live popularized online console chat, the feature offers in-game communication features like audio and video chat and screen sharing. However, it appears that innovation comes at cost to performance. Digital Foundry says GameChat affects system resources to such a degree that Nintendo is offering developers a “Game Chat testing tool.” This tool replicates the resources Game Chat takes up while running, so developers can understand how that might impact their games, without actually needing to run Game Chat itself during development. This should be no surprise to anyone who watched Nintendo’s Switch 2 demos. Game Chat looks choppy, especially when sharing your screen or making video calls. (Is that 5 fps?) I suppose it’s refreshing to see Nintendo so transparent about how laggy these features are, but the fact that it looks this bad in the official advertisement doesn’t bode well for Game Chat’s real-world performance. We’ll need to wait for the games to judge the Switch 2’s true capabilities Taken purely on paper, the Switch 2 has a big performance advantage when plugged into its dock. We already knew that the Switch 2 is capable of 4K 60 fps and 1440p 120 fps output in docked mode, compared to 1080p 120 fps output in handheld. It makes sense, then, for the Switch 2 to have an active cooling fan built into the dock to maintain that higher performance. (The Switch 1 does not have a fan in its dock, even though it is able to output a higher resolution in docked mode than handheld.) However, we’ll have to see how the performance translates into real-world use. As with any piece of hardware, on-paper specs can only tell you so much. The true test is in how developers can optimize and push that hardware with their software. If devs can take advantage of the more advanced Switch 2 hardware to pull off more impressive graphics and performance, we’ll naturally see that for ourselves in the gameplay. For now, it’s a waiting game. Source link #Rumors #Suggest #Switch #Docked Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

These cars may be especially niche in the *********** market, but we’ve had luxury electric SUVs on the mind as of late. CarExpert last week picked up the keys to its specially built Porsche Macan EV long-term loan car (more on that soon), and we’ve had several relevant reviews go live, including those for the Cadillac Lyriq and Polestar 3. We’ve therefore decided to expand on that idea and ask the members of the CarExpert team which luxury electric SUV they’d buy, provided everyone had the money. Alborz Fallah: Lotus Eletre This is a hard one! Camera IconSupplied Credit: CarExpert On the one hand, I couldn’t go past a Genesis GV70 as either an internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicle or an EV. It’s my favourite luxury SUV in the segment, but it makes more sense as an ICE than an EV. With that in mind, the one non-supercar that impressed me the most last year was the Lotus Eletre, the most ridiculous super SUV I have driven in some time. Quicker than most V10 and V12 supercars and actually fun to drive. Most interestingly, though, it was the best in-car technology I – still – have ever seen. A videogame engine and graphics card run the best in-car tech stack currently on *****. And since Lotus Australia continues to drop the price, and you can definitely find yourself in one for well under 200k with some haggling, it starts to make more sense (kind of). The main issue with these expensive EV SUVs is the resale. Have a look at the bargains you can get on a two-year-old BMW iX (which is a terrific car) and just know that you want to make sure you get a hefty discount on purchase so you don’t take a bath or six when it comes to sell. Camera IconSupplied Credit: CarExpert But the question here is what constitutes a luxury brand. We don’t deem Mini, Smart, Renault, Xpeng or Zeekr to be premium auto brands, but the latter is arguable and MG’s upcoming IM brand will be even more so, regardless of price positioning. However, all of the brands I’ve listed above (bar IM) also offer a small electric SUV priced over $45k, the threshold defined by VFACTS as separating mainstream and premium vehicles. So if I had to choose one of them I’d go for the Mini Countryman E, which starts from under $65k. But if Tesla also qualifies as a luxury marque, then the larger Model Y delivers undeniable value and proven technology for less than $59k, making it almost certain to remain Australia’s favourite EV in 2025. Get in touch with one of CarExpert’s trusted dealers here MORE: Everything Mini Countryman James Wong: Volvo EX90 I find that a lot of early luxury electric SUVs were experimental exercises, often severely compromised by their driving range and/or polarising designs that took a hit on general attractiveness as well as practicality. Camera IconSupplied Credit: CarExpert Personally, I prefer my EVs to look and drive like a normal car, and that’s why I think the new Volvo EX90 is my top pick. The XC90 was a trailblazer in the modern luxury SUV space, offering a premium cabin and drive experience, as well as seating for seven adults. Fast forward two decades later, and the EX90 adapts that formula to the electric age. It’s comfortable, quiet, luxurious and has some presence about it. Both versions offer plenty of performance balanced with long range, and in typical Volvo fashion there’s just about every safety feature you can think of. Interested in buying a Volvo EX90? Get in touch with one of CarExpert’s trusted dealers here MORE: Everything Volvo EX90 William Stopford: BMW iX and Cadillac Lyriq Among the smaller electric luxury SUVs on our market, my vote goes to the BMW iX1. Camera IconSupplied Credit: CarExpert It’s handsomely styled inside and out, the tech is slick, and it’s comfortable to drive while having plenty of power and a chuckable feel to it. Moving up to the medium-to-large electric luxury SUV space, there are more options but a lot of them aren’t exactly pretty – and if you’re spending this much money, don’t you want something that looks good? So that rules out the BMW iX for me, no matter how good it may be in other areas. The Mercedes-Benz EQE SUV is nice and plush but to my eyes even uglier than the iX, while the Audi Q8 e-tron is genuinely handsome but it’s pricey and on its way out. I can’t comment on some other tempting EVs that I’ve not yet driven, such as the Volvo EX90, but I can comment on something more attractive than any of these: the Cadillac Lyriq. Camera IconSupplied Credit: CarExpert It’s missing some features and the attractive interior has some questionable materials in places, while Cadillac’s retail network is tiny for now, but it undercuts key luxury rivals and has a stately look and driving feel. As somebody who has been keen to see Cadillac enter the *********** market for a long time, the Lyriq had the potential to be a massive letdown. Fortunately it’s not, and while there are some areas for improvement it’s an intriguing alternative to the Germans. There’s some tempting metal coming down the line, not just from Cadillac (Optiq, Vistiq) and BMW (the Neue Klasse-based iX3) but also players like Genesis (GV90). So while EV sales growth isn’t rising as sharply as it was, there’s more and more variety each year. Bring it on. Interested in buying a BMW iX1 or Cadillac Lyriq? If you put a gun to my head and said I had to own something from this list, I’d buy the Porsche Macan. Camera IconSupplied Credit: CarExpert I may be one of only a few buyers in the country, which would make me an authority on them, and I’d always be able to find it in the charging bay (also a colloquialism for ‘Porsche dealer’). The iX BMWs have some great things going for them, but I’m not as convinced by Munich’s dynamic delivery against those from Stuttgart. The Genesis looks a bit Porsche-like and would be a serious consideration here, and – while I haven’t had new glasses for several years – the Lexus RZ appeals to me for offering a distinctive wrapping but a familiar flavour of dependability and quality engineering. Yet I can’t pass by the (relatively) safe bet of the Macan, which brings a well-proportioned package inside and out, at least some level of street cred, drivability and a slightly higher chance of decent resale when I really do make up my mind… Interested in buying a Porsche Macan? Get in touch with one of CarExpert’s trusted dealers here MORE: Everything Porsche Macan Josh Nevett: Polestar 3 and Audi Q6 e-tron There’s a decent variety of electric vehicles in this list, from compact city runabouts to full-size family SUVs. Camera IconSupplied Credit: CarExpert But in choosing to prioritise all-round capability, I’m left with two standouts – the Polestar 3 and Audi Q6 e-tron. Both exist in a similar corner of the market, priced from around $120,000, and both make the most of their electric underpinnings. For the Polestar 3, that means clever cabin packaging, industry-leading driving range (706km claimed), and affordable running costs – the big three for growing families that like to get out and about. Camera IconSupplied Credit: CarExpert On the other hand, the Q6 e-tron blends exterior style, plenty of powertrain substance, and an interior bursting with technology that’s both flashy and functional. But if I was forced to choose between the two, I’d take the Polestar. In base Long Range Single Motor specification, it’ll get you further on a charge than any other EV in market, and the second row is hilariously spacious. Sure it doesn’t pack the punch of dual-motor alternatives, but it’s enjoyable to drive regardless, and comfortable too. I’m not going to pretend any of the vehicles in this category are great value, but I can confidently say that the 3 and Q6 e-tron are at least fit for purpose. Interested in buying a Polestar 3 or Audi Q6 e-tron? Get in touch with one of CarExpert’s trusted dealers here for the Polestar, and here for the Audi MORE: Everything Polestar 3 • Audi Q6 e-tron Max Davies: Lexus UX300e I’ve only driven a handful of cars on this list, but those few span quite the price range and have given me a taste of the general ins and outs of a lot of these luxury brands. Camera IconSupplied Credit: CarExpert With that in mind, I’d go for the Lexus UX300e. At as much as just $88,190 before on-roads, it could actually be considered cheap among the other cars that have appeared so far. It’s a small SUV, which means it does better to manage its EV-induced weight than some of the larger alternatives, and avoids feeling unwieldy. The interior is well-presented and comfortable, and while there’s plenty of tech, it’s all still quite accessible. This is an advantage considering the painfully screen-dependent setups seen the further you climb up the price tree. To top it off, it’s quiet and smooth. That’s not to say it’s perfect, because it does have some fairly significant flaws. Camera IconSupplied Credit: CarExpert The UX platform wasn’t built to be electric. While that means it’s no more confronting inside than a hybrid UX, the limitations are evident in the 300e’s front-wheel drive setup – and that’s where the larger and pricier Lexus RZ would make more sense. It makes far too much power to only be front-wheel drive, and against its direct rivals it is quite expensive. After all, it’s intended to be a rival to something like the Tesla Model Y or Hyundai Kona Electric rather than a Porsche Macan. I still enjoyed the UX300e during my time with it, and it had me thinking about whether I could stomach an electric Lexus for myself; ‘maybe’ was the conclusion I came to, though I’d prefer a sedan like the upcoming electric ES. A close second here was the sharp-looking Polestar 4, a much more modern EV that also has fairly compact dimensions. It’s just a touch too screen-heavy for my liking. Interested in buying a Lexus UX? 24. *** on verge of deal with EU to let Britons use European passport e-gates *** on verge of deal with EU to let Britons use European passport e-gates British holidaymakers could face shorter airport queues this summer with negotiators on the verge of striking an agreement for *** passport holders to use e-gates across Europe. Downing Street said on Saturday that it was poised to strike a deal with the EU that would improve things for British families facing “queues on holiday”. The Guardian understands officials on both sides are in talks about allowing British travellers to use e-gates reserved for people from the EU or European Economic Area when arriving at airports in Europe, ending the current two-****** system. The issue forms part of negotiations ahead of the highly anticipated ***-EU summit in London on Monday, which will focus on a security and defence pact. Since Brexit, British travellers have had to ****** to have their passports stamped when arriving in many European airports, with e-gates reserved for EU passport holders and members of the European Economic Area. Some airports in Portugal and Spain have introduced e-gates that accept British passports, though the Foreign Office still encourages *** travellers to get their passports stamped. Rishi Sunak’s government sought an agreement to open e-gates across the EU to British passport holders, but this never materialised. Travellers from the EU have continued to have access to *** e-gates, despite Brexit, without needing to have their passports stamped or checked by a border officer. An agreement enabling British travellers to use European e-gates could reduce airport queueing times considerably, particularly if it lifts the requirement for passport stamping. The EU is preparing to set up a new entry and exit system that will apply to British travellers in October. The scheme, which was meant to be launched in 2022 but has been delayed several times, would replace passport stamping but would require British travellers to provide biometric data at the border, such as fingerprints and face scans. A separate EU travel authorisation system is also being developed, and is expected to be operational before the end of the year. The *** has already set up its own travel authorisation scheme for EU and other international travellers which came into force last month. Modelled on the system used by the US, it costs £16 and allows multiple visits to the *** of up to six months over a two-year *******. Several other mobility-related issues are also under discussion by British and European negotiators ahead of Monday’s summit. Related: ‘I feel smug going in the short ******’: *** readers on getting EU passports The *** is eager to make it easier for musicians and other performing artists to tour in Europe without undergoing an onerous visa process. The EU has long pursued a youth mobility deal to allow young Europeans to temporarily live and work in the ***, and vice versa. The prime minister indicated this weekend that he was open to a youth mobility agreement. Ministers want any such scheme to be time-limited and capped, however, because of Labour’s manifesto commitment to reduce net migration. Visa barriers for touring artists are unlikely to be lifted on Monday but are expected to be among the issues the two sides agree to explore further. The two sides are also in talks over a veterinary agreement to reduce barriers for the farming and food industries. Downing Street said the deal would bring improvements for *** producers and supermarkets. It will be the third trade deal announced by the government in a fortnight, after the conclusion of a multibillion-pound free trade agreement with India and a deal to lift steel and aluminium tariffs and reduce car tariffs with the US. Speaking ahead of the EU summit, Starmer said an agreement with Brussels was “another step forward” for the *** and would “be good for our jobs, good for our bills and good for our borders”. “In this time of great uncertainty and volatility, the *** will not respond by turning inwards, but by proudly taking our place on the world stage – strengthening our alliances and closing deals in the interests of British people,” he said. Rachel Reeves, the chancellor, told the Guardian this weekend that the deal would be a “step towards” a deeper and ongoing partnership with Europe. “I am ambitious for our future. This isn’t a one-off. There will be things that we achieve, some concrete outcomes on Monday, but there will also be a step towards where we want to go next,” she said.
