Videos online showed the ship sailing underneath the bridge connecting the New York City boroughs of Brooklyn and Manhattan, as its masts collided with it. New York Mayor Eric Adams told a press conference 19 people were injured, four of them seriously. All the injuries took place on the ship, authorities said. Many people, dressed in what appeared to be white sailor uniforms, could be seen dangling from the ship’s crossbeams. At the base of the bridge, bystanders could be seen running away from the approaching ship. The ******** Navy said in a post on the social platform X that the Cuauhtemoc, an academy training vessel, was damaged in an accident with the Brooklyn Bridge that prevented it from continuing its voyage. It added that the status of personnel and material was under review by naval and local authorities, which were providing assistance. The Foreign Affairs Ministry said on X that its ambassador to the US and officials from the ******** consulate in New York were in contact with local authorities to provide assistance to “the affected cadets”. A Riverside County Sheriff’s Department spokesperson told The Desert Sun in an email that deputies were dispatched to the intersection of Highway 111 and Hospitality Row in Palm Desert at around 6:15 p.m. The spokesperson said that deputies were still on-scene as of 6:50 p.m. She confirmed no one was injured in the ******. Responders at the scene where a semi truck hit a generator in Palm Desert on Saturday. Cal Fire Public Information Officer Tawny Castro said the four people had not sustained any injuries when they were removed from the elevator. She also said that Southern California Edison staffers were en route to address the power outages. A Desert Sun staff member at the scene reported that power remained out at the Holiday Inn Express hotel. The sound of the ****** initially created concern among some in the area who wondered if they had heard another explosion following the one that occurred at a fertility clinic in Palm Springs earlier in the day. Rather than **** up a new design or try to mass manufacture smaller reactors, it wants to develop a series of reactors using existing designs. The two-year-old startup announced a Series A last month led by Eclipse with participation from CIV, Goldcrest Capital, MCJ Collective, True Ventures, and Wonder Ventures, though it did not disclose the amount raised. Now, TechCrunch has learned that the company has secured $51.3 million in a Series A, bringing the company’s total funding to $70 million. The Nuclear Company was founded in 2023 by three serial entrepreneurs: former AppHarvest CEO Jonathan Webb, Arcadia CEO Kiran Bhatraju, and CIV CEO Patrick Maloney. The startup is prioritizing sites that already have permits or licenses to operate. Fewer than a dozen sites fall under that rubric, according to filings for combined operating licenses and early site permits at the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. At the sites that are closer to groundbreaking, each can support reactors with more than 1 gigawatt of generation capacity. The Nuclear Company is aiming to develop 6 gigawatts in its first fleet. The funding round arrives as tech companies and utilities are struggling to secure power for data centers. Demand for electricity in the U.S. is expected to surge nearly 16% by 2029, according to Grid Strategies, after years of steady consumption. Data centers are a large driver; their electricity use could quadruple by the end of the decade. In the face of potential power shortages, tech companies have been cozying up to nuclear startups and developers. Google is working with Kairos to build 500 megawatts’ worth of small modular reactors (SMR), while Amazon participated in a massive $700 million round to fund X-energy’s SMR plans. Meta has solicited proposals from developers to build up to 4 gigawatts of generating capacity, and Microsoft is working with Constellation Energy to restart a reactor at Three Mile Island. But nuclear power is facing headwinds, both expected and unexpected. Competition from solar power is among the former: Tech companies and data center operators have been snapping up capacity from solar farms, signing sizable deals. These farms are frequently paired with massive batteries to provide 24/7 electricity. The technology is inexpensive, and new projects can be developed in around 18 months. Nuclear may soon face other financial hurdles, too. This week, the House Ways and Means Committee published its draft of a reconciliation bill that would kill subsidies for nuclear power that were granted under the Inflation Reduction Act. Nuclear power plants are currently eligible for tax credits up to $15 per megawatt-hour. FDA approves Novavax COVID-19 shot but with unusual restrictions FDA approves Novavax COVID-19 shot but with unusual restrictions WASHINGTON (AP) — The Food and Drug Administration has issued a long-awaited approval of Novavax’s COVID-19 vaccine but with unusual restrictions. Novavax makes the nation’s only traditional protein-based coronavirus vaccine – and until now it had emergency authorization from FDA for use in anyone 12 and older. But late Friday, the FDA granted the company full approval for its vaccine for use only in adults 65 and older – or those 12 to 64 who have at least one health problem that puts them at increased risk from COVID-19. Vaccines made by Novavax’s competitors Pfizer and Moderna already are fully licensed for use in anyone 12 and older, and also are authorized for use in children as young as 6 months. Next month, influential advisers to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention were set to debate if yearly COVID vaccines still should be recommended for everyone or only certain people at higher risk. The Novavax decision suggests the Trump administration may already have decided how to proceed in advance of that meeting. Novavax chief executive John C. Jacobs welcomed the licensure. “Market research and U.S. CDC statistics indicate that older individuals and those with underlying conditions are the populations most likely to seek out COVID-19 vaccination seasonally. This significant milestone demonstrates our commitment to these populations and is a significant step towards availability of our protein-based vaccine option,” he said. In its Friday approval letter, the FDA didn’t explain the restrictions although they reflect skepticism about vaccines from Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and other Trump officials. Novavax originally showed its vaccine was safe and effective in a 30,000-person clinical trial. The FDA had been on track to grant Novavax full approval – without restrictions — by its April 1 target date, according to two people with direct knowledge of the situation who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss confidential agency matters. Novavax later announced the FDA instead was asking it to run an additional trial after approval, which is highly unusual. FDA did order several additional trials to be completed in the next few years, some examining whether the vaccine might be associated with some heart conditions. President Trump has overseen a number of Social Security changes since his second term began — but there’s a monumental change he recently doubled-down on making. Though Trump’s proposal is overwhelmingly popular among retirees, it would significantly worsen Social Security’s long-term outlook. The $22,924 Social Security bonus most retirees completely overlook › In April, nearly 52.6 million retired workers brought home an average Social Security check totaling $1,999.97. While a $2,000 monthly check might not sound like a lot of money, no social program has consistently played a more vital role in pulling seniors above the federal poverty line and helping them make ends meet than Social Security. There’s just one problem: This nearly 90-year-old program’s financial foundation is crumbling. Current and future retirees are counting on their elected officials — including President Donald Trump — to strengthen Social Security and avoid the prospect of sweeping benefit cuts, which are drawing closer. In January 1940, the very first retired-worker benefit check was paid from Social Security’s coffers. Every year since this first payment was doled out, the Social Security Board of Trustees has published an annual report that details in length how the program generates income and where those dollars end up. More importantly, these annual Trustees Reports analyze fiscal and monetary policy shifts, along with ongoing demographic changes, to make educated projections about the financial health of Social Security when looking 75 years into the future (what the Trustees refer to as the “long term”). Beginning in 1985, every Trustees Report has warned of a long-term unfunded obligation. In simpler terms, the Trustees projected what Social Security would collect in income in the 75 years following the release of a report and estimated that outlays (benefits + administrative expenses to operate the Social Security program) would outpace income. In the 2024 Trustees Report, this long-term funding deficit had ballooned to $23.2 trillion. While online myths often blame government theft or undocumented migrants for Social Security’s woes, it’s significant demographic shifts — rising income inequality, lower birth rates, and a meaningful decline in net legal migration in the U.S. — that are the real culprits. Though $23.2 trillion is an eye-popping figure, it’s not the one that should have beneficiaries most concerned. Rather, the most worrisome of all projections is that the Old-Age and Survivors Insurance Trust Fund (OASI) will exhaust its asset reserves by 2033. The OASI’s asset reserves represent the excess income collected since inception that hasn’t been paid out in benefits (or administrative expenses). Social Security’s asset reserves are invested in special-issue, interest-bearing government bonds, as required by law. The good news for the OASI is that it doesn’t need a cent in asset reserves to keep paying benefits. More than 91% of Social Security’s income is collected from the 12.4% payroll tax on earned income. Thus, there’s no concern about Social Security going bankrupt or stopping benefit payments. However, the existing payout schedule, including annual cost-of-living adjustments (COLAs), is at risk of major disruption in 2033. Without reform, the Trustees anticipate that retired workers and survivor beneficiaries will see their Social Security checks slashed by up to 21% in eight years. The OASI’s asset reserves are forecast to run out by 2033. U.S. Old-Age and Survivors Insurance Trust Fund Assets at End of Year data by YCharts. During the first 100 days of Donald Trump’s nonconsecutive second term, he’s overseen a flurry of Social Security changes. The most publicized one has been his creation of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), which aims to make the U.S. federal government more efficient. In the wake of DOGE’s creation, the Social Security Administration announced plans to reduce its staff by 7,000 to 50,000, as well as close some of its physical offices. Attempting to make Social Security a more efficient program by trimming administrative costs is nothing new for Trump. All four of the president’s annual budget proposals during his first term (Jan. 20, 2017 – Jan. 20, 2021) called for modest outlay reductions over a 10-year *******. But President Trump’s sweeping Social Security proposal has nothing to do with cutting benefits. Rather, it has to do with eliminating a hated aspect of the program that results in reduced benefits. In a social media post to Truth Social on July 31, then-candidate Donald Trump stated, “Seniors should not pay tax on Social Security.” In a recent town hall meeting, the president doubled down on his desire to end the tax on Social Security benefits. Beginning in 1984, up to 50% of Social Security benefits could be exposed to the federal tax rate if provisional income (adjusted gross income + tax-free interest + one-half of benefits) surpassed $25,000 for a single filer and $32,000 for couples filing jointly. A decade later, a second tier was added that allows up to 85% of benefits to be taxed at the federal rate if provisional income tops $34,000 for single filers and $44,000 for couples filing jointly. The reason the tax on Social Security benefits is so disliked is because these income thresholds haven’t been adjusted for inflation since their introduction decades ago. A tax that was only expected to impact around 10% of all senior households in the mid-1980s is now applicable to around half of all senior households. Not surprisingly, an informal poll in 2023 by nonpartisan senior advocacy group The Senior Citizens League found that 94% of respondents didn’t believe Social Security income should be taxed. Eliminating this tax would increase net benefits for about half of all retired-worker beneficiaries — but it would also have undesirable consequences for Social Security. Image source: Getty Images. A proposal to remove the tax on Social Security benefits would have overwhelming support from retirees currently receiving benefits and likely garner plenty of support from future beneficiaries. But moving forward with such a proposal would have deleterious effects on Social Security’s financial health. In 2023, Social Security collected a little over $1.35 trillion in income. Though an aforementioned 91% came from the 12.4% payroll tax on earned income (applicable up to $176,100 in 2025), the remainder traces back to the interest income earned on the program’s asset reserves, as well as the taxation of benefits. With the OASI’s asset reserves shrinking with each passing year due to demographic shifts, interest income will be a less-meaningful income source over time. Meanwhile, the importance of taxing benefits as a source of Social Security income has only grown over time. The income generated from taxing Social Security benefits has increased significantly over four decades. If the tax on benefits is eliminated, the 2024 Trustees Report estimates that $943.9 billion in income would be lost from 2024 through 2033. This would almost certainly speed up the timeline to the OASI’s asset reserve depletion date, as well as potentially increase the percentage that benefits would need to be cut (beyond the estimated 21%) to sustain payouts through 2098 without any further reductions. Perhaps the saving grace for Social Security’s financial health is that President Trump can’t amend the program through an executive order. Amending the Social Security Act requires 60 votes in the upper house of Congress. The thing is, neither Democrats nor Republicans have held a supermajority of seats (60) in the Senate since 1979, so any major overhauls to Social Security will require bipartisan support. Although ending the tax on benefits is wildly popular with seniors, it’s fiscally irresponsible and would further cripple an already struggling program. It’s highly unlikely the president will find any support from Democrats in the Senate, and it’s not even clear if all 53 GOP senators would support such a proposal. The New York Fire Department press desk confirmed that authorities responded to injuries but had no details about how many people might have been hurt or whether they were on the vessel or on the bridge. In a scene captured in multiple eyewitness videos, the masts could be seen snapping and partially collapsing as they crashed into the deck of the bridge. Videos showed heavy traffic on the span at the time of the collision. The vessel, which was flying a giant green, white and red ******** flag, then drifted toward the edge of the river as onlookers scrambled away from shore. Sydney Neidell and Lily Katz told The Associated Press they were sitting outside to watch the sunset when they saw the vessel strike the bridge and one of its masts snap. Looking closer, they saw someone dangling from high on the ship. “We saw someone dangling, and I couldn’t tell if it was just blurry or my eyes, and we were able to zoom in on our phone and there was someone dangling from the harness from the top for like at least like 15 minutes before they were able to rescue them,” Katz said. What the Driver Did Next Saved His Life (Exclusive) Taras Zvir, who had recently began driving for Uber, picked up passenger Justin Anderson in Philadelphia on Feb. 25 Near the end of the ride to Bucks County, Pa., Anderson suffered what was later identified as a brain hemorrhage Zvir, a former ambulance driver, administered CPR on Anderson until EMS arrived and took him to the hospital A Philadelphia man who had only recently started working as an Uber driver helped save the life of his passenger experiencing a brain hemorrhage. “I feel like anybody would’ve done it,” Taras Zvir, 38, of Northern Liberties, humbly tells PEOPLE about his heroic deed. “I don’t know. I guess I was raised to help. You just do it. You don’t think about it, you just do it.” On the morning of Feb. 25, Zvir, who drives for Uber as a side gig while he is starting up his own company, picked up a passenger named Justin Anderson, 41, in Philadelphia. Anderson’s destination was Bucks County, where his job is located. “We just started talking about music and stuff,” Zvir recalls about the 45-minute ride. “And he mentioned that he [drove for] Uber as well. So we were just talking about that for a little bit.” As they were listening to music and nearing the end of the trip, Zvir noticed that Anderson’s head tilted and he appeared as if he was “suffocating.” “His head was kind of bobbing up and down but he was still communicating,” Zvir recalls. “I was [like], ‘Justin, you okay? Do you need anything?’ I immediately rolled the windows down, blasted my A/C to try to see if it would make him feel a little better. Zvir immediately called 911 and described Anderson’s symptoms to the dispatcher, who told him he needed to perform CPR on Anderson right away. Fortunately, Zvir knew CPR from his time as a former ambulance driver. “I ran around the car,” he says. “I opened the door, placed him flat, made sure that his head wasn’t hitting the concrete because he didn’t have any support or anything. So once I placed him flat, I just started doing CPR and was doing it for maybe six to eight minutes.” To his relief, Zvir heard the sounds of sirens in the distance as he continued to perform the life-saving measure on Anderson. He then stopped when the EMS arrived. “They started working on him immediately,” Zvir recalls. “They did Narcan. They weren’t sure if it was a drug overdose or medical emergency, so I guess they had to cover everything.” Anderson’s mother, Deborah, later wrote in a GoFundMe that her son suffered a spontaneous brain hemorrhage. A CT scan conducted after he was admitted to the hospital showed a large bleed on the right part of his brain. She added that her son underwent a craniotomy procedure to relieve the pressure on his brain. “Justin was diagnosed with a subdural hematoma (brain bleed), which was determined to be due to an AV fistula (an abnormal connection between an artery and a vein) that he most likely was born with but never knew he had,” Deborah wrote. “As a result of the amount of blood from the subdural hematoma, pressure was put on his brain, which caused a midline shift and some brain tissue damage,” she continued. At the time, Anderson remained unconscious but made some progress. In an update on March 29, Deborah wrote that her son was able to blink his eyes twice when she asked him two questions. “This has never happened,” she wrote. “It definitely gives me more hope.” Deborah said Anderson is a father of a 17-year-old girl and had just started a new job at the time of his medical emergency. She said it was fortunate that her son was not by himself when he suffered the hemorrhage. “Had he been home alone, he would not be here today,” she wrote. “Had he not been in the back of that Uber, he would not be here today. He was only in the Uber because he was supposed to come back home from work with his assigned work van. Otherwise, he would have been driving his own car. I am also thankful for the Uber driver’s quick response to call 911.” Zvir says he has been in touch with Deborah and hopes to see her son when he gets better “I definitely want to meet him,” he says of Anderson. ” And I also, I just want to make sure that he recovers. I actually texted his mother yesterday just to get an update on him. So I’m keeping in touch with his family and hopefully he pulls through.” The GoFundMe created by Anderson’s mom is hoping to raise money to pay for her son’s medical bills and other expenses. PEOPLE reached out to Deborah Anderson for comment. Looking back now, Zvir says he didn’t think what he did was anything special. “I saw somebody needed help and I just helped. That’s it,” he says.
