The company published a paper demonstrating that its fifth-generation Advantage2 system solved a simulation in minutes that would take a classical supercomputer nearly 1 million years. This demonstration underscores the company’s edge in offering practical quantum solutions today. As quantum systems scale to harness more qubits with improved stability, they are expected to transform multiple industries. D-Wave Quantum counts 133 current customers, including major diversified commercial organizations, research institutions, and government entities. The company offers access to its quantum computers through a flexible, cloud-based quantum computing as a service (QCaaS) platform, as well as an option for on-premise system installation. Additionally, D-Wave monetizes its Ocean software development toolkit, enabling customers to develop and deploy quantum applications. The model is proving to be highly successful. In the first quarter (for the ******* ended March 31), revenue of $15 million soared by 509% year over year, primarily reflecting the delivery of an Advantage system. While D-Wave is not yet profitable, the sales momentum helped narrow the quarterly net loss to $5.4 million compared to $17.3 million in the prior-year quarter. Story Continues According to Wall Street estimates, the company is projected to reach targeting full-year revenue of $24.4 million, representing a 176% increase from the $8.8 million revenue in 2024. Management believes its balance sheet cash position in excess of $300 million provides it with ample liquidity to fund its operations and pursue its expansion strategy. Looking ahead, D-Wave sees a path to continue refining its annealing technology to over 100,000 qubits and expanding its customer base into the next decade and beyond. The operating trends D-Wave presents are impressive, yet there are plenty of reasons for investors to proceed with caution beyond making the quantum leap and buying the stock. The rapidly evolving quantum computing market is highly competitive with numerous companies pursuing diverse quantum architectures, each offering unique strengths and potential benefits. This includes specialized quantum companies like Rigetti Computing and IonQ targeting similar commercial opportunities. Tech giants such as Alphabet and Microsoft are also investing heavily in quantum capabilities, benefiting from their extensive resources and cloud platforms to advance research and development. It’s unclear which quantum architecture will ultimately prove superior and whether D-Wave can manage to stay at the forefront of innovation in the long run. Another concern is D-Wave’s extreme valuation. At the current market capitalization of $3.2 billion, the stock is trading at 132 times its estimated 2025 revenue as a forward price-to-sales (P/S) ratio, suggesting investors are paying a steep premium for its growth potential far into the future, which is far from certain. While this metric alone doesn’t necessarily mean the stock will sell off anytime soon, it does highlight the risk for investors to balance in a scenario where results disappoint, especially given the company’s ongoing financial losses. There’s a lot to like about D-Wave Quantum, recognizing the company’s significant long-term potential. That being said, I believe the stock is too speculative and expensive to buy with conviction. Former President Joe Biden has been diagnosed with metastatic prostate ******* at age 82. The former president’s office said he has an “aggressive form” of the *******, which has spread to his bones. His ******* was categorized as having a Gleason score of 9, which places him in Grade Group 5, the most severe category. Here’s what to know about the disease, its symptoms and treatments: Prostate ******* symptoms Most men are diagnosed with prostate ******* before they start showing symptoms, as early warning signs of prostate ******* are rare, according to Johns Hopkins Medicine. The severity of symptoms can depend on the location of the cancerous cells and how advanced the disease has become. Symptoms can include ******** issues, such as frequent urination, weak or interrupted flow, blood in ****** and trouble either holding in or starting urination, according to Johns Hopkins. Other symptoms can include difficulty getting and maintaining an *********, painful ************ and pain or stiffness in the lower back, hips or upper thighs, Johns Hopkins says. ******** symptoms, such as frequent urination or difficulty urinating, are quite common in older men and are usually due to benign conditions like having an enlarged prostate, CBS News medical contributor Dr. Celine Gounder says. But in this case, Biden’s office said his symptoms led to a prostate exam that resulted in the discovery of a small nodule. Further testing determined it was cancerous. Some urologists were surprised that the 82-year-old underwent prostate ******* screening at all, according to Dr. Gounder, because routine screening in men over 75 is controversial. Many prostate cancers at that age are slow-growing, and overtreatment can do more harm than good, she said. Prior to the diagnosis, Biden had received a clean bill of health during a February 2024 physical, in which he was declared “fit to serve” while still in office. His situation underscores the importance of tailoring medical decisions to the individual, Dr. Gounder says. The former president had new symptoms and is functionally active, which justified a closer look. Gleason score and what bone metastasis means Gleason scores are a grading system for prostate *******, according to the Cleveland Clinic. Pathologists grade each tissue sample on a 1 to 5 scale. The lower the grade, the more ******* cells look like normal cells. Each area of prostate ******* may have a different grade, so pathologists pick the two areas that make up most of the *******. They add the two areas’ grades to come up with a Gleason score, according to the Cleveland Clinic. Biden had a Gleason score of 9 (Grade Group 5), which is determined by the pathologist who looked at cells under a microscope. A score of 9 is the second highest on the scale, which goes to 10. For scores 8, 9 and 10, the “cells look very different from healthy cells, which is called poorly differentiated or undifferentiated,” the Cleveland Clinic said. The categorization suggests a poor prognosis without intervention, according to Dr. Gounder. Moreover, Biden’s prostate ******* diagnosis came with the presence of bone metastases, meaning the disease has spread. It places him within the high/very high-risk management group. Is prostate ******* curable? Prostate ******* is often curable if it’s identified and treated early, according to the Mayo Clinic. In Biden’s case — given his age and health — the goal isn’t to cure the disease but to control it, to slow progression and preserve quality of life, Dr. Gounder says. Since the former president is reportedly in good functional health, more aggressive treatment is on the table. But these decisions always weigh the benefits against the potential risks and side effects, based on the individual’s overall condition and priorities. While Biden’s diagnosis represents a more aggressive form of prostate *******, his office said the ******* appears to be hormone-sensitive. This means the ******* should respond to testosterone-blocking treatment, since testosterone fuels prostate ******* growth, according to Dr. Gounder. Based on what is known about his diagnosis, the primary treatment would be to block testosterone with a medication like Lupron, Dr. Gounder says. This might be combined with other hormone therapies like Zytiga, or even chemotherapy, depending on the specific case. Bone-targeted treatments are also part of the strategy when the ******* has spread to the skeleton, according to Dr. Gounder. Biden is among an estimated 313,780 new cases of prostate ******* will be diagnosed in the U.S. this year, according to the American ******* Society’s ******* Facts & Figures. Tech stocks have been center stage as tariff concerns mounted because they heavily rely on manufacturing abroad. 10 stocks we like better than Apple › Things were looking extremely difficult for technology companies just a few weeks ago. President Donald Trump announced tariffs on imports from countries around the world — and an especially high tariff of 145% on imports from China. The move could have been disastrous for tech stocks in two ways: Higher prices in general would reduce demand for their products and services, and the higher prices on their imported parts and finished goods would increase their costs. Wedbush analyst Dan Ives even called the scenario “Armageddon” for technology companies. But, luckily for these players and for investors, the situation has greatly improved. Since Trump’s first announcement, he followed up by temporarily exempting electronics from tariffs. That was a first win for the industry. Then, just last week, the U.S. and China reached an initial trade agreement, dropping the level on imports from China to 30%. Now, Ives says the bull case is “back on the table” for tech stocks such as Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL), Microsoft, and Palantir Technologies. Let’s take a closer look at the situation and consider whether now is a good time to get in on these growth players. Image source: Getty Images. First, let’s consider the recent agreement between the U.S. and China. The two countries, involved in a mounting trade war that included mutual tariffs of more than 100%, concluded initial discussions with a deal that involves a 10% import tax on the U.S. and a total tariff of 30% on China. This deal is in place for 90 days while the U.S. and China continue discussions, but it’s reason to be optimistic about what’s ahead. Meanwhile, considering the level of this tariff, it’s reasonable to expect any future tariff specifically for electronics to land at a manageable level, too — and this would make it possible for these tech giants to continue manufacturing abroad, a key to their current cost and pricing structure. In a Bloomberg interview last week, Ives said that for Apple, which was preparing to shift U.S. iPhone production to India, the news could “slow down significantly that shift.” This is positive for the smartphone giant that now makes about 90% of its iPhones in China — even if the company goes ahead with the move, it can do so more slowly, making the transition less of a weight on near-term costs. Story Continues And for the tech industry as a whole, Ives said, the U.S.-China deal was a “game changer” and looking at “AI revolution names from Palantir to Microsoft, this now puts that key bull case back on the table.” Apple isn’t the only company to benefit, as Ives says. Any company that manufactures in China, thanks to the new tariff agreement, can continue without seeing an extreme increase in costs. And the benefit extends to all tech stocks — even those without a strong dependence on China. That’s because the trade deal as it stands won’t lead to a significant increase in the prices of imports — the result is less of a weight on consumers’ wallets and companies’ budgets. This means customers of tech companies may continue to spend. This is very good news for companies like Palantir and Microsoft, which depend on companies investing in their software and services. And now, as the AI ***** continues, represents a time that could be particularly prosperous for such companies — they’re seeing tremendous growth and investors have worried that high tariff levels could halt the positive momentum. Palantir reported a double-digit revenue increase in the recent quarter and has likened demand to “a ravenous whirlwind.” Microsoft posted double-digit gains in revenue, operating income, and net income and spoke of strong ongoing demand from AI customers. So, considering the U.S.-China trade deal, should you buy tech stocks now? It’s true that these players aren’t as cheap as they were a few weeks ago after they tumbled on tariff concerns. And of course, it’s important to look at each stock on a case-by-case basis. Some tech stocks don’t make good investments right now, while others are screaming buys. But, many tech leaders — such as the ones I’ve mentioned here — even at higher valuations compared with a few weeks ago still make solid buys. This is because, over time, companies such as Apple, Palantir, and Microsoft are well positioned to grow revenue further and excel in the AI space. Will more gains come this year? Possibly, as Ives has said. What’s important, though, is that each of these quality companies has the financial strength, innovation, and products and services that should drive long-term growth. So, regardless of their performance in the short term, these stocks could help your portfolio score a major win over time. Speculation is mounting the 64-year-old will step down after he presents his final Match of the Day next weekend. Lineker, listed as the highest-paid BBC presenter, had been due to remain at the forefront of the BBC’s coverage of next season’s FA Cup and the World Cup in 2026, despite previously announcing he will leave Match of the Day at the end of this season. But last week he had to apologise after sharing a social media post about Zionism that included an illustration of a rat, historically used as an antisemitic insult. Lineker said he very much regretted the references, adding he would never knowingly share anything antisemitic. Last week, BBC Director General Tim Davie said: “The BBC’s reputation is held by everyone, and when someone makes a mistake, it costs us.” It is understood that BBC bosses considered Lineker’s position untenable. The former England striker has attracted criticism before for his posts on social media in the past. He was temporarily suspended from the BBC in March 2023 after an impartiality row over a post in which he said language used to promote a government asylum policy was “not dissimilar to that used by Germany in the 30s”. The BBC’s social media rules were then rewritten to say presenters of flagship programmes outside news and current affairs – including Match of the Day – have “a particular responsibility to respect the BBC’s impartiality, because of their profile on the BBC”. In November 2024, Lineker announced his departure from Match of the Day, but said he would remain with the BBC to front FA Cup and World Cup coverage. In an interview earlier this year about leaving, Lineker said he believed the BBC wanted him to leave Match of the Day as he was negotiating a new contract last year, saying: “Well, perhaps they want me to leave. EnergyAustralia issued the statement early on Monday following a lawsuit launched by Parents for Climate that had been scheduled to be heard in the NSW Federal Court on Wednesday last week. The group, with more than 20,000 members, called EnergyAustralia’s acknowledgement a win for *********** consumers but said it could also set a standard for the use of carbon offsets and environmentally friendly marketing by other companies. The lawsuit, filed in August 2023, claimed the energy generator and retailer misled customers using its Go Neutral products that were marketed as “carbon neutral” due to the purchase of carbon offsets and claimed consumers would have a “positive impact on the environment”. In its statement, EnergyAustralia apologised to customers who felt the marketing claims were unclear and acknowledged carbon offsets did not reverse environmental harm. “While offsets can help people to invest in worthwhile projects that may reduce greenhouse gas emissions elsewhere, offsets do not prevent or undo the harms caused by burning fossil fuels for a customer’s energy use,” the statement said. “Even with carbon offsetting, the emissions released from burning fossil fuels for a customer’s energy use still contribute to climate change.” EnergyAustralia withdrew its Go Neutral plans from the market in 2024, and chief customer officer Kate Gibson said the company would focus on direct efforts to reduce emissions in future. “Carbon offsets should not be used to delay or diminish the important work that needs to be done to actively decarbonise,” she said. The energy giant’s acknowledgement should herald a fresh approach to the use of carbon offsets in Australia, Parents for Climate chief executive Nic Seton said, as greenwashing had become too common. “Parents have spent too long trying to make careful, considered decisions about where their money goes, especially in a cost-of-living crisis, but corporate greenwashing has pushed them off track,” he said. “This isn’t just about EnergyAustralia ? it’s about holding companies to a higher standard across the board.” *********** regulations for corporate environmental claims were not strong enough, Mr Seton said, and the government should consider ending Climate Active carbon neutral certification that had been under review since October 2023. Generally, prostate ******* usually grows very slowly and finding and treating it before symptoms occur may not improve men’s health or help them live longer. Roughly 12.9% of men will be diagnosed with prostate ******* at some point in their lifetime, according to the NIH. In 2022, there were an estimated 3.5 million men living with prostate ******* in the United States. The Gleason score is calculated by adding together the two grades of ******* cells that make up the largest areas of the biopsied tissue sample, the NIH says. The grading system usually ranges from 6 to 10. Biden’s diagnosis of a Gleason score of 9 indicates his ******* is aggressive. A score of 9 indicates that the ******* cells look very different from normal prostate cells and are likely to grow and spread rapidly. This places the ******* in Grade Group 5, the highest risk category, associated with a greater likelihood of metastasis and a more challenging prognosis. Possible treatment options While Biden’s official treatment plan remains to be announced, possible options for the former president include hormone therapy, or androgen deprivation therapy (ADT), which can reduce levels of male hormones that can fuel prostate ******* growth. This approach can effectively slow disease progression and manage symptoms, even in advanced stages where the ******* has spread to the bones. Mike Pearce describes the Central Avenue corridor in downtown Kansas City, Kansas, as the kind of place you don’t want to leave — if you can make it there. Bridge closures and endless detours complicate that. “It’s salt of the earth people. We’re out here trying every day to make our little area here just gorgeous and awesome,” said Pearce, adjusting his charcoal gray ballcap and gazing out at the neighborhood on a recent Friday morning from the raised patio seating outside Slap’s BBQ. After taking the competitive barbecue scene by storm and starring in TLC’s “BBQ Pitmasters,” he and his brother, Joe, opened the joint 11 years ago, just minutes from their boyhood home in Strawberry Hill. They’ve racked up awards, guest appearances and coveted spots on regional and national barbecue restaurant rankings, drawing hungry patrons from around the country to their modest barn-style building in downtown KCK. “We love it here. We’re here for the long haul if we can stay alive,” Pearce said. But when the Central Avenue Bridge spanning the Kansas River between KCK and Kansas City closed in 2021, the restaurant’s bottom line immediately took a 15-20% hit, he said. Four years later, repair work is just getting underway on the Central Avenue Bridge, along with the nearby Interstate 670 Bridge. The Kansas Department of Transportation is now managing six bridge projects in Wyandotte County associated with three complete closures, several partial closures and additional lane restrictions. The much-anticipated opening of the Rock Island Bridge between Armourdale and the West Bottoms — a separate project being managed by private developers — has been delayed from spring to fall of 2025. And another major artery connecting the two states, the Kansas Avenue Bridge, remains blocked off indefinitely while local officials work to secure funding for its repair or replacement. Frustration is mounting for residents and business owners who say they don’t know why new projects are being undertaken before bridges already under construction can be opened to commuters. Pearce said his restaurant is a “working lunch kind of place.” When diners can’t get in and out quickly, they go somewhere else. “We live and die by the good weather months, so if there’s anything that becomes an obstruction on those months when you’re just barely staying alive or potentially losing money and just trying to keep your employees employed, those things, the impact of those is proportionally much greater,” Pearce said. He said he doesn’t doubt that local officials have residents’ and business owners’ best interests in mind. But he feels there’s a lack of urgency around construction projects that are choking off access to KCK. “I don’t want to sit here and complain about those guys too much because KCK got us up and running in two seconds flat,” Pearce said. “It’s still got a small-town feel when we need to work through problems.” Although he’s excited that work is finally underway on the Central Avenue Bridge, his patience is running thin. “We’re slowly dying on the vine.” Problems on Strawberry Hill Rose Eilts, president of the Strawberry Hill Neighborhood Association, said her vibrant community has started to feel like an island in recent years. “We’re pretty much surrounded by bridges and the lack thereof,” Eilts said. “It increases everybody’s commute time, makes it inconvenient, and it keeps people from visiting us and our businesses and keeps us from getting out to our work and other places,” Eilts said. When the Lewis and Clark Viaduct Bridge closed abruptly for several months over the winter, Strawberry Hill residents received an influx of confused motorists on their narrow streets, including semi-truck drivers who needed help backing out, Eilts said. Detours have been an endless source of frustration for Shawn Hensley, a regional operations manager at trucking company Dana, which owns two yards and a rail transfer facility in KCK. “One of my yards is directly across the river off the Central bridge, so it used to be a two-minute drive, and now they’ve got to go all the way around I-70, come down James Street,” he said. Hensley, who fights traffic every day to get to work from his home in Blue Springs, said he’s just waiting for the James Street Bridge to be put out of service because of all the extra traffic it’s taken on. “It just adds time, and time’s everything anymore,” Hensley said. “You add fifteen minutes to every trip and then the day’s over before you even get started, it seems like.” KDOT construction projects As work kicks into high gear across the Kansas City metro to address aging infrastructure ahead of next year’s World Cup, KCK residents increasingly find themselves cut off from the nearby communities they’re used to traveling freely between. Besides the Central Avenue/I-670 repairs, KDOT’s Wyandotte County projects include work on multiple Interstate 435 bridges, the 18th Street Bridge, the Turner Diagonal Freeway and the KS-32 bridge, and a K-5 bridge deck replacement that’s scheduled to start this week. “Coordinating projects in a densely populated area that encompasses numerous roadways and multiple public entities’ needs can present challenges,” agency spokesperson Philip Harris told The Star in an email. Projects managed by other entities, including the railroads and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, can compound those challenges, he said. “The logistics of project delivery are complicated and KDOT acknowledges the potential for frustration,” said Harris, noting that the agency is in regular contact with the Unified Government about the status of its projects. Some residents are skeptical about whether the overlapping layers of government are doing everything they can to coordinate — especially when multiple nearby bridges are closed at once. “That’s the frustrating part — thinking that the agencies with this much expertise on transportation and infrastructure would have their act together,” said Jim Schneweis, a retired high school teacher who lives in the Cathedral neighborhood. “We can’t get to our doctor’s offices, grocery stores — even to other parts of the city. More importantly, we have people who can’t get into the city. It’s real difficult for people that own businesses here that rely on people from outside the Kansas City, Kansas, area to come in.” Disruptions to north-south traffic in the middle of the city have also proven detrimental to local retailers. Jorge Salazar, owner of Tapatio ******** Grill on 18th Street, said he’s noticed a steep decline in customers since the closure of the 18th Street bridge in February. “It’s hurting a lot,” Salazar said. “I know a lot of customers, they say, ‘I don’t order right now because the bridge is closed.” Wyandotte County road closures Schneweis said he also worries about whether first responders can quickly make it to his neighborhood if they’re needed. The Kansas City Kansas Fire Department falls short of national standards that recommend departments send out four firefighters per truck and meet a four-minute travel time between station and response scene during at least 90% of incidents called in. A spokesperson for KCKFD said advanced planning and real-time adjustments help minimize response time delays. “Road closures and construction can be inconvenient and sometimes complicate how we respond to emergencies. Fortunately, we have enough resources to adjust quickly,” assistant fire chief Scott Schaunaman said in an email. Every morning, crews communicate construction updates through emails, Zoom calls and in-person briefings, Schaunaman said. If something comes up unexpectedly, like a train blocking a route, dispatch can send another crew from the other side.
