Technically, aside from a few minor gripes with controls and performing certain actions, it’s pretty solid and quite stable. Morally, it’s got some mild if cartoonish violence with little else of note. 4. Kiss, Kefu to coach in Lions tour invitational matches Kiss, Kefu to coach in Lions tour invitational matches Incoming Wallabies coach Les Kiss will get an early taste of international rugby when he oversees the AUNZ Invitational XV against the British and Irish Lions in Adelaide. Queensland Reds mentor Kiss will team up with former All ******* coach Ian Foster, who was already announced as an assistant for the July fixture, the first time since 1989 that Australia and New Zealand have combined on the field. That match was won 19-15 by the touring Lions, however only two of the seven Kiwi players originally named in the squad decided to play. There are hopes that Japan-based stars like Michael Hooper, Aaron Smith and Richie Mo’unga could be attracted to participate this time around. Kiss, who will replace current Wallabies coach Joe Schmidt next year, was looking forward to guiding the trans-Tasman selection, with the match a week before the first Test in Brisbane on July 19. “It’s a privilege to be able to lead the coaching group for the combined AUNZ Invitational XV,” he said in a statement. “I’m looking forward to working with a coach like Ian, who has wide-ranging experience at the highest level of the game.” Rugby Australia also announced that former Wallabies No.8 Toutai Kefu would coach the First Nations and Pasifika XV, who will play the Lions at Melbourne’s Marvel Stadium on July 22. Currently coaching in Japan, Kefu was part of the victorious Wallabies squad in the 2001 Lions series and was previously head coach of Tonga for seven years.”First Nations and Pasifika people contribute massively to the game all around the world and the significance of this game in celebrating those ongoing contributions can’t be overstated, especially against a team with the history of the British and Irish Lions,” Kefu said in the statement.”I’m looking forward to getting together as a group in July and representing our people with a strong performance.” Source link #Kiss #Kefu #coach #Lions #tour #invitational #matches Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  5. Biggest Chicken Pot Pie Recalls In The US Biggest Chicken Pot Pie Recalls In The US Chicken pot pie is often a comforting dinnertime staple — warm, savory, and satisfying, whether served fresh or pulled from the freezer. With roots tracing back to ancient Rome, this *******, vegetable-studded dish has evolved into a beloved American classic. Over the years, it has become a go-to meal in many households. However, like with many processed or packaged meals that line store shelves, not every pot pie is created (or handled) safely. From bacteria to foreign materials to labeling issues, some chicken pot pie products have posed serious health risks, leading to major product recalls over the years. This roundup highlights major U.S. recalls involving chicken pot pie and similar items, including crustless versions, soups, and empanadas. While these events are relatively rare given the vast number of products sold, they highlight the importance of strict food safety protocols, especially for frozen or canned meals with multiple ingredients. Read more: Canned Ham Brands Ranked From Worst To Best Atkins Crustless Chicken Pot Pie Was Pulled From Shelves As Part Of A 12-Million-Pound Listeria Recall In 2024 Atkins Crustless Chicken Pot Pie – Atkins/Walmart In October 2024, federal food safety officials issued a sweeping recall affecting nearly 12 million pounds of ready-to-eat meat and poultry products, including Atkins Low Carb Living Crustless Chicken Pot Pies, after routine testing revealed potential listeria monocytogenes contamination. The recall was initiated by Bellisio Foods, the manufacturer behind several popular pot pie brands, including our favorite, after tracing the contamination to chicken supplied by BrucePac. The recall expanded repeatedly as investigators uncovered more affected products. The contaminated items were distributed nationwide to major grocery chains like Kroger, restaurants, and schools, though officials note the products were not part of USDA school meal programs. Unlike many foodborne pathogens, listeria can survive freezing temperatures, making frozen meals like the recalled 9-ounce Atkins pot pies particularly concerning. The USDA Food Safety and Inspection Services (FSIS) classified this as a Class I, high-risk recall, warning that the bacteria poses severe threats to pregnant women (risking miscarriage), older adults, and immunocompromised individuals. Symptoms, including fever, muscle aches, and even meningitis, may take up to 70 days to appear. No confirmed illnesses were linked to the outbreak at the time of the FSIS announcement. Frozen Fresh N Lean Recalled Over 2,000 Chicken Pot Pies Due To Listeria In 2024 Chicken pot pie – Lauripatterson/Getty Images Months before the Atkins pot pie recall, another crustless chicken pot pie product faced similar food safety concerns. According to an FDA release, in April 2024, Nutrition Corp voluntarily recalled 2,119 Fresh N Lean brand Crustless Chicken Potato Pot Pies after potential Listeria monocytogenes contamination was detected. The frozen meals, packaged in 9-ounce vacuum-sealed plastic trays with a May 8, 2024, expiration date, had been distributed nationwide to consumers. Initially unclassified when first announced on April 25, the FDA upgraded the recall to Class II status on May 29, indicating the products could cause temporary or medically reversible health consequences, though serious outcomes were unlikely. The incident highlights how listeria contamination has triggered some of the largest meat recalls in U.S. history, as evidenced again by subsequent 2024 chicken pot pie recalls. Nutrition Corp, based in Moosic, Pennsylvania, initiated the voluntary action through email notifications, though neither the company nor the FDA ever disclosed how the contamination occurred. Aunt Kitty’s Foods Recalled Nearly 16,000 Pounds Of Chicken Pot Pie Soups In 2023 Hanover chicken pot pie soup – Hanover Foods When it comes to food safety, an unlabeled ingredient isn’t just an oversight — it can be life-threatening. In October 2023, New Jersey company Aunt Kitty’s Foods recalled over 15,000 pounds of ready-to-eat Hanover Soup Classics Chicken Pot Pie soup due to misbranding and undeclared soy protein. The 15-ounce canned soups, with a September 2026 best-by date, were distributed to retail locations in Maryland, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, and Virginia. While canned pot pie products can be an easy alternative, the FSIS classified this as a high-risk Class I recall — its most serious designation — because even trace amounts of undeclared soy can trigger anaphylaxis (an allergic reaction) in sensitive individuals. While this issue is typically avoided with homemade soup recipes, where ingredients are fully controlled, the allergen warning was missing due to a production error. The company used soy-containing chicken without updating the label. Aunt Kitty’s Foods discovered the mistake during an internal inventory review, prompting immediate action to pull the products from the shelves. While no allergic reactions were reported, the recall affected multiple retail chains across five states before officials successfully recovered about 30% of the affected products. Great American Cobbler Company Recalled Over 4,000 Pounds Of Pot Pies In 2022 Great American Cobbler Company Creole-style chicken pot pies – Instacart Even a pot pie with Southern flair isn’t immune to food safety pitfalls. The FSIS issued a Class II recall for over two tons of frozen Creole-style chicken pot pies in February 2022 after discovering an undeclared soy allergen. The Great American Cobbler Company, based in Homerville, Georgia, pulled its Handcrafted Premium Creole Style Chicken Pot Pie products following routine FSIS label verification that revealed missing soy declarations. Distributed to retailers in Georgia, Wisconsin, and Virginia, the products posed a significant risk to consumers with soy allergies. The company recovered about half of the affected products (2,126 pounds) following the discovery. This incident marked another case where routine regulatory oversight identified potentially dangerous labeling omissions before consumer illnesses occurred. The recall preceded later, larger pot pie safety incidents, but shared similar concerns about accurate allergen disclosure in frozen convenience foods. Molly’s Chicken Pot Pie Empanadas Recalled Twice Over Plastic And Listeria Contamination Empanadas – ******* Alvarez/Getty Images Chicken pot pie empanadas have faced multiple serious recalls over the years. In 2011, Windsor Quality Food voluntarily recalled 11,390 pounds of Molly’s Kitchen Mini Chicken Pot Pie Empanadas. The Class II recall was initiated after customers reported finding plastic fragments in the product, debris from broken manufacturing equipment that contaminated batches produced on August 30, 2011. These empanadas, packaged in 10-pound cases containing 108 individual pies, had been distributed nationwide to food service operations before the hazard was discovered. The story took a more alarming turn in 2014 after Windsor’s acquisition by Japanese food giant Ajinomoto. The same empanadas became entangled in one of the largest frozen food recalls in U.S. history –– a staggering 47 million pounds of frozen products potentially contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. This Class I recall stemmed from tainted vegetables supplied by CRF Frozen Foods and affected empanadas produced between May 2014 and May 2016. The products had reached consumers and food service providers across North America before being pulled from distribution. Park 100 Recalled 19,200 Pounds Of Chicken Pot Pie In 2010 Due To Metal Contamination Chicken pot pie – Iko636/Getty Images In January 2010, the FSIS announced that Park 100 Foods Inc., based in Kokomo, Indiana, had recalled approximately 19,200 pounds of frozen Market Day Chicken Pot Pies due to potential contamination with foreign materials. The issue was came to light when a customer reported discovering metal pins in the pot pie. Although no injuries were reported, the presence of such foreign materials obviously posed a significant health risk. In case it wasn’t obvious, the FDA notes that hard pointy objects like metal pins could cause serious damage to a person’s mouth, throat, or digestion system. FSIS urged consumers who had purchased the pot pies not to eat them and to either discard the product or return it for a refund. The items were made in early October 2009, and sold to customers across 15 states through Market Day’s website and catalog. These states included much of the Midwest and East Coast, such as Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Florida. ConAgra Recalled All Varieties Of Its Frozen Pot Pies Due To Salmonella Poisoning In 2007 Banquet Chicken Pot Pie – Conagra Foodservice In October 2007, ConAgra issued a massive recall of all varieties of its frozen pot pies—including chicken, turkey, and beef—after they were linked to a widespread Salmonella outbreak affecting at least 139 people across 30 states. The recall impacted multiple major store brands, including Banquet, Kroger, Great Value, and Albertson’s. Over a decade before the USDA began its extensive efforts to reduce salmonella contamination, the outbreak led to 20 hospitalizations, though no deaths were reported. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and state health departments traced the illnesses back to the pot pies, prompting ConAgra to voluntarily shut down production while federal investigators worked to pinpoint the exact source of contamination. The products were distributed nationwide, as well as in Puerto Rico and the Caribbean, amplifying the scope of public health risk. The recall highlighted critical gaps in food safety oversight, as the pot pies had been labeled as “cook and serve,” requiring consumers to fully cook them to eliminate pathogens — a step many may have skipped. The USDA issued a public health alert days before the recall, but the delay in identifying the source of the contamination left consumers vulnerable. The incident spurred calls for clearer labeling and stricter manufacturing controls, particularly for frozen foods that blur the line between pre-cooked and raw. ConAgra said a reintroduction of its pot pies would include revised cooking instructions and enhanced safety measures. Read the original article on Mashed. 8. Syrians chase equestrian glory in sport once dominated by Assads Syrians chase equestrian glory in sport once dominated by Assads For weeks, Ziad Abu al-Dahab has been training for gold at an equestrian tournament near Damascus — in a sport once dominated by Syria’s Assad family and their inner circle. “Results used to be decided in advance, always favouring those close to the government,” the 25-year-old rider said. Advertisement “My greatest ambition was to reach third place, but today, I can aim for first and do well with my new horse.” For decades, former president Bashar al-Assad, his relatives and allies enjoyed wide-ranging privileges before his overthrow in a lightning Islamist-led offensive in December. Equestrian sports surged in the 1990s under Assad’s late brother Bassel, who was being groomed to succeed their father Hafez before dying in a car ****** in 1994. Bashar took over and became president in 2000. Bassel used to take part in tournaments at home and abroad and styled himself as Syria’s “first rider”. Advertisement His profile helped shine a spotlight on the sport, which came to symbolise elite status under the Assads. Abu al-Dahab said those close to the family had European horses, which far outperformed the local ones of other competitors. “It was impossible to compete with the ruling family,” he said while walking his horse on the sand. – Impossible competition – Outside the Dimas equestrian club near Damascus, a statue of Bassel still stands, his face now hidden by the new Syrian flag. The family’s grip on the sport passed to the next generation, including Sham, daughter of Bashar’s brother Maher. Advertisement Sham used to compete in Syria and at international tournaments, often placing high. The attention she received in the media stirred controversy, with critics seeing it as propaganda. That grip on the sport kept some away. Munana Shaker, 26, said her father banned her from competing until the Assads were gone. “My father forbade me from practising due to fear (of the ruling family), and he always told me that competition with them was impossible,” she said as she stroked her white mare, Mariana. “He didn’t want us associating with the Assad family at all. He told me the story of the equestrian who was jailed after beating Bassel al-Assad, and did not want to put me in danger.” Advertisement She was referring to Adnan Qassar, a prominent rider who outperformed Bassel before being imprisoned without trial in 1993, accused of plotting to kill him. Many believe his sporting success was the real reason for his arrest. Qassar was freed 21 years later under a presidential pardon. “I have long stayed away from this sport, but it is now time to come back strong. I am from the Shaker family, not the Assad family,” she said. – ‘Dream come true’ – Shadi Abu al-Dahab, 48, oversees about 240 horses — including some of the Assads’ former European ones. “Around 40 horses were set aside for the Assad family. No one else was allowed to get near them,” he said. Advertisement But today, he’s seeing new faces and growing interest in the sport. “We have new skills that we discover daily, and enthusiastic children… We now have a large number of riders aspiring to compete and get titles,” he said. Fellow trainer Salah al-Ahmad, 52, was beaming as his son took the mare Topsy for a spin — once ridden by Sham al-Assad. “He used to dream of touching her or patting her head,” Ahmad said. “Now in this new era, the mare is with him, and he has won two tournaments. “It’s a dream come true.” mam/lk/nad/dv Source link #Syrians #chase #equestrian #glory #sport #dominated #Assads Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

  10. ‘Toxic’ waters behind the surge of shark attacks in Adelaide, SA ‘Toxic’ waters behind the surge of shark attacks in Adelaide, SA A “toxic algal bloom” has been blamed for recent attacks and washing up of sharks on South Australia’s beaches. Last week, a shark bit Richard Vinall, a man in his 60s out for a swim on Port Noarlunga, leaving him fighting for life. The horror attack came in the same ******* several sharks washed up on Adelaide’s beaches, amid growing concerns over SA’s marine life. Numerous shark sightings have been made by locals, with authorities warning beachgoers to stay out of the waters. Deputy Premier Susan Close, who is also the state’s environment minister, told ABC that the state is experiencing a huge algal bloom that is not only “driving the sharks away” but also “poisoning them” and in some cases making them act more aggressively, comparing the size of the bloom to Kangaroo Island. Camera IconThe algal bloom poisoning fish on the coastline has been compared to the size of Kangaroo Island.. Matt Loxton Credit: News Corp Australia “It is an algal bloom that is toxic for fish and so that might explain some of the different behaviour,” she said. “But also they’re coming in closer and as people may have seen on Henley Beach which is a lovely tourist and metropolitan beach in Adelaide, there was a large white (white shark) that washed up, dying, and then, in fact, did die.” Ms Close said the sharks were “not behaving normally” in two ways. “They’re more numerous along our metropolitan coastline than we normally expect to see and also they appear to be in some distress and there’s some talk of them being more aggressive,” she said. Multiple sharks, along with other marine animals like stingrays and other fish, have been found beached since March this year. “This is an enormous algal bloom. In some parts, we think it’s about 20m deep,” Ms Close said. OzFish has estimated nearly 200 species of fish had been killed by the deadly algal bloom, which Ms Close said can be attributed to last year’s marine heatwave and a lack of winds that usually help break up the bloom. “Not only is it poisonous (to fish) but also causes haemorrhaging of the skin and overnight it sucks oxygen out of the ocean beneath it which means that the kind of fish that can’t move away are also suffocating,” she said. “Because it’s been unseasonably warm for so long, we have seen more people down by the beach wanting to go for a swim and that’s why we have decided to increase the shark patrol for a little longer-than-normal.” The SA government announced on Sunday that shark patrols along the state’s coastline would be extended until the June long weekend. Camera IconShark patrols have been extended to June in light of the increased shark sightings around South Australia. Pic: Tricia Watkinson. Credit: News Limited South Australia has been hit by a string of fatal shark attacks this year. In January, 28-year-old surfer Lance Appleby was attacked by a shark on Granites Beach in Streaky Bay in the Eyre Peninsula. His body was never found. Teenger Khai Cowley was killed in an attack off Ethel Beach in December, 2023. Tod Gendle, 55, was attacked in October that year while he was surfing near Streaky Bay by a suspected 4m great white shark. Teacher Simon Baccanello, 46, was believed to have been killed by a shark while surfing at Walkers Rock near Ellison on the state’s west coast. Ms Close warned locals swimming at the beach to be cautious of the “threats out there”. “The ocean is not behaving normally,” she said. “This is exactly what we would expect to happen as climate change becomes more serious, and so really please pay attention”. New research suggests that expecting mothers who indulge in this high-**** fruit could be giving their babies a head start in avoiding food allergies. Getty Images/iStockphoto A Finnish study that analyzed data from over 2,200 mother-child pairs found that infants born to mothers who consumed avocados during pregnancy had a 44% lower chance of developing food allergies by their first birthday compared to those whose mothers abstained. The findings — published in the journal Pediatric Research — assessed maternal diets through questionnaires during the first and third trimesters. Infant allergic outcomes were evaluated at 12 months, focusing on conditions like food allergies, eczema and wheezing. While the avocado connection was significant for food allergies, no notable associations were found for the other conditions. It’s worth noting that mothers who consumed avocados tended to be older, non-smoking, have higher diet quality scores, lower BMIs and breastfed longer in the first trimester. Avocados are rich in nutrients beneficial for fetal development, including fiber, folate, lutein and healthy monounsaturated fats. These components are believed to support the developing immune system, potentially reducing the likelihood of allergic reactions in infancy. Getty Images/iStockphoto Food allergies now affect approximately 1 in 13 children in the US, representing an increase of 50% in the prevalence of food allergies between 1997 and 2011. Experts attribute the rise to several factors, including a shift to more refined diets, vitamin D deficiencies due to a lack of sun exposure and the “hygiene hypothesis” — which posits that our cleaner contemporary environment exposes children to fewer microbes, causing their immune system to overreact to certain foods. A healthy snack, avocados are rich in nutrients beneficial for fetal development, including fiber, folate, lutein and healthy monounsaturated fats. Getty Images A recent study performed in Sweden adds to a growing body of research that suggests one of the factors may be the delayed introduction of allergenic foods. Researchers analyzed the data of 2,060 babies and found that introducing them to a diverse diet — categorized as consisting of 13 or 14 different foods — at 9 months of age was associated with a 45% decrease in the risk of food allergies by the time the infant reached 18 months. However, the study suggests that the same protective effect does not seem to occur when implementing a diverse diet at an earlier age, such as 6 months. This association held strong even after adjusting for factors like family history of allergies, breastfeeding duration and the mother’s education levels — although the researchers noted that “children with a history of eczema may benefit the most from eating a diverse diet early in life for food allergy prevention.” Source link #Eating #highfat #millennial #favorite #pregnant #lowers #babys #chance #developing #food #allergies Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

  13. ******* diagnosis is another formidable challenge for ex-president ******* diagnosis is another formidable challenge for ex-president Joe Biden’s half-century in politics has been an exercise in overcoming adversity. From the death of his wife and young daughter in a car accident in 1972, to two early and unsuccessful presidential bids, to the death of his eldest son at just 46, his decades in Washington have been defined by tragedy but often followed by triumph. Now, just four months after leaving office as a one-term president, and as intense scrutiny is placed on his mental and physical decline during those four years, the 82-year-old has been diagnosed with aggressive and advanced prostate *******. It is a disease that has never been far from his mind in the 10 years since his oldest son, Beau, died of brain ******* – leaving a deep emotional scar on the father that lingers to this day. After that tragedy, finding a cure for ******* became a cause for the elder Biden. In 2016, then-President Barack Obama tasked him with leading a “moonshot” government-wide research effort to that end – an effort that Biden continued during his own presidency. Now it is ******* that presents possibly the greatest threat to the Biden’s health since he nearly died of a brain aneurism shortly after he abandoned his first presidential bid in 1988. The news of the diagnosis lands as Democrats continue to grapple with the consequences of Biden’s fateful decision to seek a second presidential term in the 2024 election – an attempt to extend the record he had already set for the oldest occupant of the Oval Office. Biden ultimately dropped out of the race after intense pressure from Democrats following his halting, at times incomprehensible, performance in a general election debate with Donald Trump last June. But until that point, he had insisted that he was fit to continue in the White House for another four years. This ******* diagnosis will underscore that the concerns about his age and the potential for health issues expressed by a majority of American voters in national polling were valid. It coincides with the publication of several books detailing the efforts by those close to the president in the White House to accommodate, and conceal from the public, the toll the years were taking on his body and mind while he continued to serve as commander-in-chief. While there is no reason to believe that Biden’s prostate issues were at all apparent while he was in the White House, the fact that such an aggressive form of ******* could avoid detection until it had already spread, despite the wealth of medical support and evaluation available to Biden, will raise new questions and concerns. It sets up a troubling hypothetical of how Biden’s ******* might have been treated if he had successfully won a second term. Hypotheticals notwithstanding, Biden’s diagnosis may temper some of the sharper criticisms the book revelations would have otherwise prompted. President Donald Trump, who had spent much of his recent trip to the Middle East disparaging his predecessor, released a statement extending his “warmest and best wishes” to the Biden family. That my be representative of the tenor of the public dialogue around Biden in the coming days. Until several recent media interviews, including one with the BBC in which he defended his decision to stay in the 2024 race until a late stage, Biden had largely receded from public view since leaving power in January. If the former president has the energy and endurance to do so, this latest medical revelation might give him a new platform, and a newly sympathetic public, to attempt to defend and burnish his presidential legacy. Over the course of his public life, Joe Biden has defined himself by his persistence and endurance, only reaching the pinnacle of American power late in life. His illness is another formidable challenge. But it presents one more opportunity for Biden to define himself – as a politician and as a man – by how he handles it. 18. A behind-the-scenes look at Biden’s dark debate night A behind-the-scenes look at Biden’s dark debate night Yahoo is using AI to generate takeaways from this article. This means the info may not always match what’s in the article. Reporting mistakes helps us improve the experience.Generate Key TakeawaysThe News Alex Thompson and Jake Tapper’s book, focuses much of its attention on media coverage of the 46th president, a topic of deep concern and obsession by the last administration and its top aides. Semafor obtained a early copy of the book, which includes details about some previously unreported strategies the administration tried to keep the press from reporting on Biden’s age. The book notes, for example, that before The Wall Street Journal published its widely-read story questioning Biden’s mental acuity, a different national news outlet decided to scrap a story about Biden’s mental decline, following an angry call to the reporter from senior adviser Mike Donilon. It also chronicles the ways in which the campaign selectively tried to get in front of potentially damaging information, detailing how the White House leaked special prosecutor Robert Hur’s report first to journalists the Biden team perceived as sympathetic, hoping to pre-spin the details. Digital video was a constant struggle for the Biden campaign, Tapper and Thompson write. The campaign tried to manage by enlisting director Steven Spielberg and getting creative with editing, even going as far as to stage a never-aired made-for-video town hall. Staff frequently used slow motion videos of Biden so people didn’t realize how slowly he was walking in real-time, and used extra edits to clean up his stumbles. The book also includes behind-the-scenes details about the leadup and fallout of the consequential presidential debate. The book reports that Biden’s team was very late for the scheduled candidate walkthrough before the contest. While Trump arrived at 6 pm and walked through the debate studio around 7 pm, peppering CNN chief Mark Thompson with logistical questions, Biden’s team never made its initial walkthrough time, prompting panic from a CNN executive, who called Biden aide Anita Dunn inquiring about his whereabouts. Dunn told the network that he didn’t need to be there because he had done plenty of debates, but the CNN executive replied that the president should see the stage and the setup. Biden finally arrived and walked through the set between 8:32 and 8:50, 10 minutes before the debate was set to air. Before the June debate, Vice President Kamala Harris’ team had booked her on four TV networks to spin Biden’s performance. But the fallout from the contest was so intense that some staff advised her to cancel the appearances. While she decided to do the interviews, she may have ended up regretting participating in an appearance with CNN’s Anderson Cooper: The anchor’s difficult questioning seemed to get under the then-VP’s skin. After the interview, the book’s authors’ report, Harris was visibly angry with Cooper, and told staff that “this motherf*cker doesn’t treat me like the damn vice president of the United States.” Source link #behindthescenes #Bidens #dark #debate #night Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

Erin Patterson: Death cap mushrooms located in Loch by retired poisons information specialist, jury told Erin Patterson: Death cap mushrooms located in Loch by retired poisons information specialist, jury told Erin Patterson spent time in an area identified to have death cap mushrooms growing in it more than three months before three people fatally ingested the poisonous ingredient while eating lunch at her home, a jury has been told. The poisonous death cap mushrooms were located 28km from Ms Patterson’s home by a retired pharmacist, who shared the finding online, the triple ******* trial was told on Monday. Ms Patterson, 50, is facing trial after pleading not guilty to the ******* of three of her husband’s relatives and attempting to ******* a fourth in the country Victorian town of Leongatha. Prosecutors allege the mother of two deliberately spiked a lunch at her home on July 29, 2023, with death cap mushrooms, while her defence has argued it was an unintentional tragic accident. NewsWire Credit: NewsWire On Monday, retired pharmacist and former Victorian Poisons Information Centre poisons information specialist Christine McKenzie gave evidence that she located death cap mushrooms near the township of Loch, about 28km northwest of Leongatha, on April 18, 2023. Prosecutors allege Ms Patterson’s phone records indicate she “travelled to and remained in the Loch area at around 10 am” the following day, before returning to Leongatha. Also on April 18, it’s alleged her records indicate she visited Outrim at around 11am, where the jury was told an earlier sighting of death caps were posted on iNaturalist. Ms McKenzie told the jury she was visiting her daughter and posted the sighting on iNaturalist, a citizen science website used to record species, under the name “Chrismck”. “We’d been for a walk … my husband and I took our grandson for a walk with the dog,” she said. NewsWire / David Geraghty Credit: News Corp Australia She told the court that she observed death cap mushrooms under oak trees at the Loch Recreation Reserve and removed the sporing bodies. “Initially, the ones I saw first were under a single oak tree,” Ms McKenzie said. “We removed them and put them in the dog **** bag, all I could see.” Asked by prosecutor Jane Warren if there was a “risk” the mushrooms could regrow, Ms McKenzie replied “absolutely”. “More could come up over the subsequent days, weeks,” she said. Quizzed on if she say any regrowth, she said she was only visiting Loch for the day. we were just visiting our daughter for the day Ms McKenzie told the jury that she worked for the Victorian Poisons Information Centre for 17 years and developed an algorithm to decide what calls about mushrooms should be escalated to a mycologist to be identified. “We couldn’t ask every single call about fungi to be identified, there could be hundreds,” she said. She told the court that she developed a special interest in fungi and undertook further study. “I became fascinated about how few fungi had been identified in Australia and I find them just personally beautiful,” she said. Prosecutors allege Ms Patterson intended to kill the lunch guests attending her home after inviting them with the “false claim” of discussing a ******* diagnosis. “It is the prosecution case that the accused deliberately poisoned, with murderous intent, each … after inviting them for lunch on the pretence that she’d been diagnosed with ******* and needed advice about how to break it to the children,” Crown prosecutor Nanette Rogers SC said at the start of the trial. Her husband Simon Patterson’s parents, Don and Gail Patterson, both 70, and Gail’s sister Heather Wilkinson, 66, died in hospital in the weeks after the gathering. 24. Stellantis Killed These Engines, And We’re Still Sore About It Stellantis Killed These Engines, And We’re Still Sore About It As Stellantis shifted its priorities toward electrification, it sadly discontinued some of its most beloved engines. Established in 2021, Stellantis is a global automotive conglomerate born from the merger of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) and PSA. Forming during the supply chain shortage crisis, Stellantis immediately faced a wave of obstacles. One of its most significant challenges was to honor the heritage of 14 diverse brands, including Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Maserati, Alfa Romeo, Fiat, Citroën, and Peugeot, while defining each of its unique futures. Today, we’re celebrating three of our favorite engines that Stellantis has discontinued since its inception. Many brands in the Stellantis portfolio boast over a century of history, with much of their performance legacies characterized by their engines. Unfortunately, just two years after Stellantis’s formation, these three revered engines began to be phased out. Some of these engines helped their models break speed and acceleration records, while another enabled trucks to fulfill their workhorse duties while achieving remarkable fuel economy. Either way, these engines deserve recognition. Read more: These V6 Engines Put The LS1 V8 To Shame Maserati V8 (F154) 2018 Grey Maserati Levante Trofeo parked for press photos. – Maserati Maserati produced over 100,000 8-cylinder-powered vehicles over the last 64 years before Stellantis axed the Italian marque’s final V8 engine. Co-developed with Ferrari, this twin-turbocharged 3.8-liter V8 delivered the thrilling performance one expects from a brand with a proud racing history. The first model to feature this V8 was the 2013 Maserati Quattroporte GTS. Eventually, it became available in the brand’s first SUV, the Levante, as well as its mid-size sedan, the Ghibli. In the Levante, the engine produced 580 horsepower, enabling a sprint from 0-60 miles per hour in just 3.7 seconds, pushing the boundaries of gas-powered luxury SUV performance. To commemorate the end of this engine, Maserati offered special edition models, such as the 2023 Ghibli 334 Ultima edition. With a top speed of over 207 mph, Maserati claimed it was the fastest sedan in the world. A reduced curb weight and 572 hp enabled this Ghibli to reach 60 mph in just 3.9 seconds — since this engine debuted in the Quattroporte a decade earlier, it was fitting that this was the final Maserati model offered with this V8 engine. Additionally, a Quattroporte Grand Finale edition produced 572 horsepower and 538 pound-feet of torque. Supercharged 6.2-Liter Hemi ****** V8 Dodge Challenger SRT ****** supercharged engine. – JoshBryan/Shutterstock Shifting gears from Italian to American muscle, Stellantis has slowly phased out Hemi V8 engines throughout its lineup. One of the most prized Hemi engines no longer in production is the Hemi ****** V8, particularly the one used in the final Dodge Challenger SRT® ****** 170. This limited-production model featured a 1025-hp supercharged 6.2-liter Hemi ****** V8 engine with a 3.0-liter supercharger and 945 pound-feet of torque. As the first Hemi to exceed 1,000 hp, the ****** boasted supercar-level performance, launching from 0-60 mph in an astounding 1.66 seconds and completing the quarter-mile in 8.91 seconds. With these times, it’s unsurprising that the ****** set two records: first, as the fastest-accelerating car, and second, for the quickest quarter-mile time for a production car. Given its sub-2-second 0-60 mph time and single-year production run, the ****** is highly sought after by enthusiasts. With exhilarating speed, fans would welcome a comeback of this record-breaking engine in future Chrysler models, like the new Charger. Although, for now, it’s still discontinued. 3.0-Liter EcoDiesel V6 EcoDiesel engine sitting in a truck chassis – Ram Trucks After nearly a decade of production in the U.S., 2023 marked the last year for the 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V6 engine. Producing 260 hp and 480 lb-ft of torque in its final iteration in the 2023 Ram 1500, this engine was known for its efficiency and hauling capability. For those seeking a more environmentally friendly option, the engine was also designed with B20 biodiesel capability. Where the ****** engine delivered alarming power, the EcoDiesel delivered exceptional range. The 2023 RAM 1500 4×4 EcoDiesel V6 featured an EPA-estimated 28 miles per gallon on the highway and could travel an astounding 950 miles on a single tank of fuel. Imagine taking a nearly 1,000-mile road trip and not having to stop to refuel the tank? However, its performance went well beyond range. Intended for hauling, the RAM 1500 4×4 had a towing capacity of 9,600 pounds and a payload capacity of 1,780 pounds when paired with this engine. Of course, with this machine’s capabilities, why wouldn’t it be on our list of engines we’re still sore about losing? Want more like this?
