Tesla ‘Full Self-Driving’ *********** testing officially confirmed
Tesla ‘Full Self-Driving’ *********** testing officially confirmed
Electric vehicle maker Tesla has confirmed it is now testing its Full Self-Driving (FSD) semi-autonomous technology in Australia, revealing the news owned by its CEO Elon Musk.
The post by Tesla AI, shared by Tesla Australia and New Zealand, showed what appears to be a Tesla Model 3 sedan using FSD to perform an infamous Melbourne ‘hook turn’ as it drives through the Victorian capital’s central business district using the system.
A human driver is clearly seen, as is the central display showing the surroundings of the vehicle as it navigates city traffic, including other cars, pedestrians, cyclists and of course trams, in a journey lasting longer than the sped-up video’s nearly two-minute length.
Tesla first began testing its FSD system locally in January 2023 – or earlier – but the automaker’s *********** division had not officially confirmed testing on local roads until now.
Hundreds of new car deals are available through CarExpert right now. Get the experts on your side and score a great deal. Browse now.

The FSD technology cannot legally be used by the public on *********** roads and is currently not available to Tesla owners even if their vehicle has the capability.
Some *********** customers have paid as much as $10,100 to have access to the Tesla FSD Beta technology in their vehicle via a software update once it has been legally approved for testing on public roads.
Tesla owners in Australia – as well as Belgium and Germany – were among the first outside the US to be able to reserve the system in their cars.
Local release timing for FSD has not been revealed, but following the automaker’s acknowledgement of local testing the system could be introduced more broadly here this year.
Tesla’s FSD system was first offered to selected owners in the US in October 2020, before it was rolled out to all North American Tesla customers in November 2022.
Camera IconSupplied Credit: CarExpert
In January 2025, the Artificial Intelligence division of Tesla posted a clip on social media showing Model Ys and Model 3s driving out of the Fremont factory where they’re built into dock lanes awaiting shipment.
The tech was anticipated to be in right-hand drive Tesla vehicles – including those sold in Australia – in 2023. However, the timing was postponed and Mr Musk’s latest comments suggest a launch in the first half of 2025.
Mr Musk claimed FSD capability was built-in to every Tesla produced since 2016, however, he was forced to backtrack on that claim earlier this year, when he admitted that millions of vehicles will need hardware upgrades to use the tech.
The system is different to the EV brand’s Autopilot system, which is not offered in Australia but is fitted to Teslas in the US made from 2014. It includes functions now also offered by other automakers as part of their ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems) tech suites.
Camera IconSupplied Credit: CarExpert
They include Traffic Aware Cruise Control, which functions in the same way as adaptive cruise control but uses cameras, as well as Auto Lane Change, which is also know as lane centering in cars from other brands.
An Enhanced Autopilot system includes Dumb Summon, which moves a vehicle on or out of a tight parking space by using the key fob.
It also adds Actually Smart Summon, which according to Tesla can “navigate more complex environments and parking spaces, maneuvering around objects as necessary to come find you in a car park”.
Tesla is looking to rebound from its first annual sales decline in 2024, after an even more difficult start to 2025 which saw ******* sales slumps and calls from employees for Musk to step down as CEO.
An updated Model Y hit *********** showrooms this month, while the automaker also recently increased the range of the entry-level Model 3 sedan via another battery upgrade.

Qualcomm to launch data center processors that link to Nvidia chips
Qualcomm to launch data center processors that link to Nvidia chips

Qualcomm on Monday said it plans to launch processors designed for data centers to power artificial intelligence, which will link to Nvidia’s chips.
Nvidia’s graphics processing units (GPUs) have become a critical component in data centers used to train huge AI models that power applications like chatbots. They are often paired with a central processing unit (CPU) — a market dominated by Intel and AMD.
Qualcomm said it is planning to launch a custom CPU for the data center that can connect to Nvidia’s GPUs and software. A link to Nvidia’s infrastructure is key for any player hoping to crack into the data center given the relevance of the U.S. chip giant’s semiconductors for AI.
The announcement actually marks a re-entry into the data center market for Qualcomm after previous efforts last decade bore little fruit.
In 2021, Qualcomm acquired Nuvia, which designs processors based on Arm designs and has been key to the U.S. tech titan’s efforts with data center CPUs.
The data center CPU market remains highly competitive. Big cloud computing players like Amazon and Microsoft already design and deploy their own custom CPUs. AMD and Intel also have a strong presence.
Last week, Qualcomm signed a memorandum of understanding with Saudi-based AI frim Humain to develop data centers, joining a slew of U.S. tech companies making deals in the region. Humain will operate under Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund.
Getting into the data center is part of a broader strategy from Qualcomm to diversify its business, which has traditionally been dominated by sales of processors and modems for smartphones.
Under CEO Cristiano Amon, Qualcomm has moved into chips for cars as well as PCs — a market historically dominated by Intel.
Amon said on Monday during at presentation at Computex in Taipei, Taiwan, that there are now more than 85 PC designs that are on ***** or in development with Snapdragon X Series chips, which were first announced in 2023. Amon also said the company will announce a new PC chip during its annual summit in September.
Qualcomm is pitching its chips as power efficient and capable of running AI processes on a device, rather than in the cloud, where they are typically done now. Some of the touted advantages of on-device AI include faster AI apps and more security, since data doesn’t need to leave a piece of hardware.

Confused and disoriented pets? Dementia is not just for humans
Confused and disoriented pets? Dementia is not just for humans
Sometimes the little guy just stops and doesn’t know where he is any more. At 15 years old, Olli the pug is very old, in need of help, often disoriented. He doesn’t hear or see much and his hind legs hurt.
“Olli has had dementia for a few years,” says owner Ute Hausmann. She has completely adjusted to his needs, caring for, nurturing, looking after and encouraging the animal that has been living with her and her husband in the Rheinisch-Bergisch district near Cologne for 11 years. Because: “Olli is dearly loved.”
Dementia widespread among older dogs and cats
According to Holger Volk, a doctor at the University of Veterinary Medicine Hanover, dementia is common among dogs and cats of an advanced age.
He says that about one in three dogs aged 12 to 13 years show clinical symptoms.
By the age of 15 to 16, two out of three dogs are affected by “canine cognitive dysfunction syndrome.”
And among very old cats at about 16 years of age, around 50% have dementia, known as “feline” syndrome. So, all in all, a “huge number,” he says.
Early intervention is very important. “When **** owners notice abnormalities, it is often almost too late,” says Volk, who heads the hospital for small animals.
The disease is difficult to diagnose because the signs vary and dementia develops progressively. It is usually accompanied by other illnesses and not easily separated from “normal” degenerative signs of old age.
What causes dementia and what to watch for?
Changes in an animal’s brain metabolism, inflammation and protein deposits all cause nerve cells to no longer work properly. Those changes make an animal slow down and some forget practised commands. They may get confused and no longer sleep well – and there are also behavioural changes.
“Loner behaviour and withdrawal” are examples Volk cites. Joint pain and dental disease are common.
Prevention can help. Measures can include a suitable low-sugar diet – with certain fatty acids that work as energy sources for older animals and prevent inflammatory reactions.
If dementia is diagnosed, special food is definitely part of a treatment strategy. Exercise and mental stimulation are also key.
“There are not many medications available” – except for a stimulant to help with persistent poor sleep or a means to promote blood circulation, says Volk.
So it is important to observe your animal carefully for any changes.
Cats: Harder to watch closely
Cats like to do their own thing – and therefore tend to slip under the radar and out of sight. But signs of dementia in cats can include appearing anxious, becoming less active and interacting less, the veterinarian says.
It is also very common for cats to meow loudly, almost scream at night, a sign the animal is trying to locate itself.
A cat may also struggle to find its litter tray – just as a normally house-trained dog may stop indicating when it has to go and instead relieve itself in the home, according to the animal ******** foundation Four Paws.
Dementia brings changes not only for the affected animals, but also for their families. But with patience and the right care, the progression of the incurable disease can be slowed down.
As for the senior pug Olli, exercise and a routine are very important. Owner Hausmann massages her pug’s aching hind legs every morning. Then she takes him out two to three times a day – always the same familiar short distances and very slowly.
“It helps him to cope,” she says.
Even a curb can pose a challenge. After the short walk, the 74-year-old lifts the 9-kilogram bundle onto the sofa at home. “Olli used to be very boisterous and lively. Now he’s slow, unsure of himself and always wants to be where I am, constantly following me around.”
Engaging with other four-legged friends is out of the question.
“He doesn’t want anything to do with other dogs any more. He used to be in a good mood, was very interested in females, but now he doesn’t like any contact at all.”
At night, her pug often wakes up and seems completely lost. “Olli has a cautious, gentle character, he’s not aggressive and luckily he still goes to the toilet outside,” says Hausmann.
He manages to make himself noticed – and then he’s out the front door and into the garden.
Hausmann, a former nursery school teacher who knows her pug inside out, doesn’t miss a beat. Converted into human years, Olli is almost 100 years old.
Growing awareness of older animals’ needs
Veterinarian Volk has observed that many pets are now living to a ripe old age, and this has led to a growing awareness of the issue.
However, he says doctors often only diagnose and treat concomitant diseases such as heart, kidney or joint problems. “The brain is not the focus of attention, but it is becoming more and more so.”
He knows that it often helps **** owners when they receive clarity and a confirmed diagnosis of dementia.
Similar to humans, the same applies to dogs and cats: Age is a risk factor, but not a cause of dementia, he says. “We need to work much harder on prevention. A happy life includes a healthy brain.”

Spirits maker Diageo forecasts $150 million hit from tariffs

Dado Ruvic | Reuters
Spirits maker Diageo said Monday that it expects to take a $150 million hit annually from U.S. President Donald Trump’s U.S. tariffs while simultaneously launching a $500 million cost savings program.
The owner of Johnnie Walker and Casamigos said the estimated impact is based on the assumption that U.S. tariffs on U.K. and EU imports remain at 10%, and that those from Mexico and Canada remain exempt under the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement. It added that it saw no material impact from tariffs on China.
Diageo said it expects to be able to mitigate around half of those costs under its existing processes “before any pricing” measures.
The company also announced a $500 million cost savings program over three years which it said would enable “reinvestment in future growth and improved operating leverage.”
That comes as the company reported a 5.9% rise in third-quarter organic net sales and reiterated its full-year guidance.

Budget airline Ryanair reported full-year profit after tax of 1.61 billion euros ($1.8 billion) on Monday, down 16% year-on-year but slightly above analyst expectations of 1.6 billion euros, according to FactSet.
Total revenue for the year rose 4% to 13.95 billion euros, above the 13.89 billion euros anticipated by analysts.
Ryanair said its average fare had dropped by 7% throughout the course of 2024, which drove traffic up by 9% year-on-year to a record 200 million passengers.
Speaking to CNBC’s “Europe Early Edition” on Monday, Ryanair CEO Michael O’Leary described the airline’s fiscal year as “very difficult,” citing an gaming platforms boycott in the spring of last year, as well as delivery delays of Boeing aircraft.
He argued the airline had “come through that very well.”
“We’ve reported about 1.61 billion [euros] net profit in a year when average fares fell by 7%,” he said, noting that the company’s operating costs had remained flat. “The gap between us and every other airline in Europe is widening in terms of costs. That puts us in a very strong position.”

What to keep an eye out for today
European markets on Monday are likely to be focused on a number of geopolitical events that affect the region.

It’s expected that British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen will announce a new defense and security pact as well as further deals on cutting red tape, youth mobility and easing trade restrictions. Critics say the British government risks reversing Brexit.
Later, U.S. President Donald Trump will be holding a call with Russia’s President Vladimir Putin. Both leaders decided to skip peace talks that were set to be held in Turkey last week. Both Russia and Ukraine blame each other for the failure to reach a ceasefire deal.

Apple blocks Fortnite on iOS globally, Epic Games says, weeks after the developer scored a big win in court
Apple blocks Fortnite on iOS globally, Epic Games says, weeks after the developer scored a big win in court
Fortnite developer Epic Games and Apple have been locked in a prolonged legal battle over commissions on in-app purchases for nearly five years. A federal judge brutally chastised the iPhone maker last month for ignoring her injunction and continuing to engage in anticompetitive behavior.
The developer of Fortnite said Apple blocked the popular game from the App Store in the U.S. and the European Union Friday, just weeks after a federal judge handed Epic Games a major victory over the iPhone maker in court.
“Now, sadly, Fortnite on iOS will be offline worldwide until Apple unblocks it,” Epic Games said in a social media post Friday morning.
According to Apple’s guidelines, 90% of submissions are reviewed in less than 24 hours. On Wednesday, however, Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney said the company submitted a new version for review to include the game’s weekly update.
“We asked that Epic Sweden resubmit the app update without including the U.S. storefront of the App Store so as not to impact Fortnite in other geographies,” an Apple spokesperson said in a statement. “We did not take any action to remove the live version of Fortnite from alternative distribution marketplaces.”
Apple initially removed Fortnite from the App Store in 2020 after Epic Games tried to skirt paying commissions on in-app purchases by users, sparking a prolonged legal battle. Five years ago, Apple pulled Fortnite from the App Store hours after Epic Games had released an update allowing users to purchase “V-bucks,” Fortnite’s in-game currency, directly from the developer at a discount. The dispute has been playing out ever since.
Then last month, U.S. District Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers ruled Apple had defied a previous order by continuing to prevent developers from offering alternate payment options. Epic Games announced last week it had submitted Fortnite for review to be reinstated on the App Store.
After nearly five years in the courts, the drama is likely just getting started, Danny Karon, an attorney who represents plaintiffs and defendants in antitrust and other class-action lawsuits, told Fortune.
“It’s only a few years old,” Karon, who teaches at The Ohio State University Moritz College of Law and the University of Michigan Law School, said of the legal battle. “There’s a lot of runway left.”
The latest controversy comes shortly after Gonzalez Rogers found Apple “knew exactly what it was doing” when it violated her 2021 injunction. She had previously ruled the 30% commission Apple charged on in app-purchases was anticompetitive and said developers had the right to shepherd users outside of Apple’s ecosystem to make payments.
Story Continues
But Apple’s efforts to comply with the order “strained incredulity,” Gonzalez Rogers wrote. Apple responded by charging a 27% commission on any purchases made by users after tapping through external purchase links, she noted. The judge also found Apple tried to thwart developers with tactics like full-page “scare screens” aimed at stirring up privacy fears and requirements that forced customers to log-in multiple times to make payments outside of the App Store.
“Apple’s continued attempts to interfere with competition will not be tolerated,” Gonzalez Rogers wrote.
The judge also said Apple tried to cover up its actions in court. The judge asked federal prosecutors to investigate whether Apple and Alex Roman—a vice president of finance who “outright lied under oath,” according to Gonzalez Rogers—should be charged with criminal contempt.
“It seems that Apple can’t get out of its own way,” Karon said.
The company’s App Store guru, Phil Schiller, advocated internally for complying with the order, Gonzalez Rogers said, before then-CFO Luca Maestri convinced CEO Tim Cook otherwise.
“Cook chose poorly,” the judge wrote.
Companies like Spotify joined Epic Games in celebrating the ruling. Apple said it disagreed with the decision and intended to appeal.
After Epic started its fight against Apple with an antitrust suit five years ago, Gonzalez Rogers ruled in favor of Apple on nine out of ten counts, finding that the Silicon Valley giant could not be considered a monopolist under California or U.S. law.
“Success is not ********,” she wrote in 2021.
Gonzalez Rogers did give Epic Games one crucial victory, however, issuing a nationwide injunction that said Apple could not prohibit developers from directing users to make in-game purchases outside of the app.
The Ninth Circuit of Appeals affirmed that and much of the judge’s ruling. The Supreme Court declined to review the case in January 2024, and the injunction went into effect the next day.

*** couple facing deportation from Australia after woman’s incurable diagnosis plead for intervention
*** couple facing deportation from Australia after woman’s incurable diagnosis plead for intervention
Jessica Mathers and Rob O’Leary thought they were living the *********** dream – but in a case of bureaucracy gone mad, the English couple face being booted out of the country after she was diagnosed with an incurable disease.
Now they are appealing for immigration minister Tony Burke to green light their visa and allow them to stay in the country which has become their adopted home.
Their story is similar to so many others – they came from the *** in their 20s seeking sun, adventure, opportunity and everything that Australia has to offer.
They met at a backpackers hostel in 2017, fell in love and decided they wanted to make Australia their home.
In a cruel twist of fate, Jess was diagnosed with Relapsing-Remitting Multiple Sclerosis.
She receives regular treatment and her condition has remained stable, allowing her to work and contribute positively to the community via charity work.
Camera IconBritish couple Jessica Mathers and Robert O’Leary are facing being kicked out of *********** unless the immigration intervenes in their case. Supplied. Credit: Supplied
Her treatment doesn’t cost the *********** taxpayers – because it’s covered under Australia’s reciprocal healthcare agreement with the ***.
However, it’s being used as a reason to block their application for permanent residency because she failed to meet the health requirements.
All visa applicants must meet health requirements, in part to ensure that *********** citizens and permanent residents can access healthcare which is in short supply and to control how much we spend on health services.
Now it’s up to the immigration minister to make a decision on whether they will be allowed to remain in the country.
“Jess and Rob are perfect examples of what Australia needs – a young couple who have a lot of potential, already have contributed to Australia in so many ways over the last eight years,” their lawyer Marial Lewis from Crossover Law Group told NewsWire.
The couple – surrounded by a throng of friends and supporters – on Monday afternoon appeared before the Administrative Appeals Tribunal where sought to overturn the immigration department’s decision to block their visa.
They were told by Senior Member Kira Raif that their only option was to request a new health test from a second practitioner.
However, the tribunal heard that would do little given Jessica’s diagnosis.

The next step is to now ask Mr Burke to use his powers to personally intervene in their case.
Support for their cause is evident by the fact that over 22,000 people have now signed a petition calling for them to be allowed to stay.
If they are booted out of the country, Australia will lose two business owners who have dreams of expanding and providing secure jobs for hardworking Aussies.
Rob is a skilled labourer and carpenter and has his own company – O’Leary Cranes and Construction.
Ironically, he wanted to expand and bring on employees. But because of his visa status, he couldn’t get a loan from banks to cover a few month’s worth of wages.
“We’ve been here 10 years and I’ve got dreams, I’ve got goals over here, goals that are only going to benefit the economy, what I want to do with my business,” Rob said.
“The reason I haven’t been able to act on some of my ideas is because I haven’t been able to speak to banks … That’s actually hindered the *********** economy potentially. We have a vision of what we want to do and that will only benefit the country we live in.”

The couple are currently on bridging visas which are due to expire in approximately a month.

She says the case is all about her love for Australia, and her and Rob’s desire to make it their home.
“If (Mr Burke) gives us a visa, we will continue to contribute positively to the economy and we can offer so much more than we do now,” she said.
“I’m restricted because of my bridging visa – but I still jump from temp job to temp job, I DJ every weekend, I do all the charity work I do.

Qualcomm to make data center processors that connect to Nvidia chips
Qualcomm to make data center processors that connect to Nvidia chips
By Stephen Nellis and Max A. Cherney
SAN FRANCISCO/TAIPEI (Reuters) -Qualcomm on Monday said it will make custom data center central processing units, or CPUs, that use technology from Nvidia to connect to Nvidia’s artificial intelligence chips.
Nvidia’s chips are dominant in the AI market but always paired with CPUs, a market traditionally dominated by Intel and Advanced Micro Devices. Nvidia has jumped into the CPU market itself, designing a chip using technology from Arm Holdings to develop its own “Grace” CPU.
On Monday, Qualcomm said it would return to the data center CPU market. In the 2010s, Qualcomm began developing an Arm-based CPU that it tested with Meta Platforms, but curtailed those efforts amid cost cuts and legal challenges.
But after acquiring a team of ex-Apple chip designers in 2021, Qualcomm has quietly revived those efforts, again holding discussions with Meta about a data center CPU. Qualcomm last week confirmed that it has a letter of understanding with Saudi Arabian AI firm Humain to develop a custom data center CPU.
On Monday, Qualcomm said that its future chips would use technology from Nvidia that will help them communicate quickly with Nvidia’s graphics processors (GPUs), which are the mainstay of its AI chip portfolio.
“With the ability to connect our custom processors to Nvidia’s rack-scale architecture, we’re advancing a shared vision of high-performance energy-efficient computing to the data center,” Cristiano Amon said on Monday.

How ‘diving on concrete’ shaped latest Maroons rookie
How ‘diving on concrete’ shaped latest Maroons rookie
Trent Loiero counts Queensland hardman Michael Crocker among his muses.
But the Melbourne forward feels he’s struck the balance between fire and finesse ahead of his own State of Origin debut.
Loiero, 24, will return home to the Sunshine Coast this week for the Maroons’ camp – moved from their traditional Sanctuary Cove base – ahead of next Wednesday’s opener in Brisbane.
The fiery Storm forward admitted he went too far at this month’s Magic Round when he conceded a pair of costly penalties in a golden-point loss to Canberra.
Invited into the Maroons’ camp last year, Loiero has worked on his ball-playing and opposition scouting to become a more complete player.
But the hot streak built during a childhood “playing rain, hail and shine, diving on the concrete, diving on the road” remains.
“It’s always been there. It might just have come out a bit more in the past few weeks,” he said.
“I’ve learnt my lesson. Aggression’s good, as long as it’s controlled aggression.”
Loiero has been named on Billy Slater’s bench and says he hasn’t given any thought to the Blues’ pack and if he’ll be targeted as a rookie.
Not that he’d mind it, given Loiero cited two of the Maroons’ great competitors when asked who he had modelled his game on.
“If you’re talking about people who like to bring the heat, Mick Crocker was one,” he said of the tough-as-nails forward.
“Also Matt Gillett. I loved watching Matt Gillett.”
Reuben Cotter has seen enough of Loiero to know he’ll fit right into a pack keen to turn the tables on the Blues.
“Mick Crocker, the sort of player he was in this jersey, all us middle forwards aspire to play similarly,” he told AAP.
“He’s (Loiero) a handy player; been watching him for a couple of years now.
“And he’s played in some big games now too and it’s good to have him in camp.”

Popular Coffee Chain Shuts Down Multiple Locations In Major California City
Popular Coffee Chain Shuts Down Multiple Locations In Major California City
Coffee pouring into a white cup on a grate – Narong Khueankaew/Shutterstock
While there are plenty of copycat Starbucks recipes out there to conveniently satisfy your coffee and dessert cravings at home, there’s nothing like the real thing. With nearly 40,200 locations all over the globe, Starbucks is easily the biggest coffee chain in the world. However, the iconic business has experienced some major setbacks in the San Francisco market lately, at least according to its surprising number of recent closures.
Since November 2024, Starbucks has shuttered four locations in the city, including one location that was in operation for three decades. The fourth in this spate of closures, as reported by KRON4, will shutter the location at 1255 Battery Street in Levi Strauss Plaza, effective May 16, 2025. And lest you think the recent San Francisco closures were a mere fluke, the massive coffee chain closed a whopping seven stores in the city back in 2023.
Our list of beloved chain restaurants that we may lose in 2025 illustrates the obstacles establishments like Red Lobster and TGI Fridays are currently facing. While Starbucks’ situation certainly isn’t that dire, global sales at the chain have been lackluster in 2025 when compared to previous years. Additionally, many customers complain that the experience they’ve come to love from Starbucks just doesn’t exist anymore, which may be contributing to diminished traffic at the coffee chain.

Starbucks is no stranger to controversy, as the chain has experienced scandals linked to everything from the ingredients used in its drinks to more serious allegations of racial profiling within its stores (which led to what many view as the wrongful arrest of two men in 2018). As for the reason behind the chain’s multi-year San Francisco store closures, Starbucks claims that closing stores is primarily done to ensure that customers have the best possible experience. However, many of the closures taking place from 2023 to 2025 involved stores nearing the end of their leases, which the company decided not to renew.
As reported by The Real Deal, the chain may have been a bit overzealous when opening San Francisco locations in the past, which means that stores were essentially competing against one another and dragging down the brand’s bottom line as a whole. The outlet also reported that Starbucks attempted to slash its rent at select locations by as much as half and chose to close stores when these efforts were unsuccessful. While these closures have alarmed some in the community, rest assured that San Francisco still has almost 50 locations open for business, which is surely good news for Starbucks fans in the area.

Len Buckeridge’s son and long-time BGC director Andrew Buckeridge has died, aged 62
Len Buckeridge’s son and long-time BGC director Andrew Buckeridge has died, aged 62
Perth businessman Andrew Buckeridge, the son of late construction billionaire Len Buckeridge, has died.
Andrew was an executor of his father’s $2 billion-plus estate and a director of major companies in the family’s BGC empire for more than three decades until he resigned in June last year.
Andrew and his will co-executor, younger brother Sam, still had not completed their ***** of the building materials, construction and property empire controlled by Len when he died March 2014. Len was 77.
Andrew died last week. He was 62.
Sam and Andrew were the major beneficiaries in Len’s will. But the billionaire’s estate was tied up in a trust structure and the executors had to consider the entitlements of Len’s three other children, step son Julian Ambrose, his wife Siok Puay ‘Tootsie’ Koh and eight grandchildren.
Facing a variety of challenges and difficulties with the complex structure, Andrew and Sam decided to sell the BGC empire in 2018.
Then after four years of being unable to offload the BGC assets to a single buyer, they decided in 2022 to sell smaller piece as the Perth housing market showed signs of recovery from a long slump.
Mr Ambrose, who had been a trust lieutenant of his step father, agreed last year with Sam and Andrew to buy the BGC construction and pre-cast concrete business.
BGC and the family have been contacted for comment.

Russia demanded Ukraine cede more territory at Turkey talks, Ukrainian source says
Russia demanded Ukraine cede more territory at Turkey talks, Ukrainian source says
By Tom Balmforth
ISTANBUL (Reuters) -Russian negotiators at peace talks in Istanbul demanded Ukraine pull its troops out of all the Ukrainian regions claimed by Moscow before they would agree to a ceasefire, a senior Ukrainian official familiar with the talks told Reuters.
That demand, along with others the Ukrainian official said were made at Friday’s talks, went beyond the terms of a draft peace deal that the United States proposed last month after consultations with Moscow.
The talks in Istanbul, the first direct contacts between the two sides in three years, ended with agreement for a prisoner exchange but failed to agree to a ceasefire. A Ukrainian source had said on Friday the Russians had made conditions he described as “non-starters”, without giving details.
At a briefing with reporters on Saturday, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov was asked about the terms that, according to the Ukrainian official, Moscow put forward, but he declined to comment, saying the discussions need to take place behind closed doors.
The Ukrainian official, who spoke on condition of anonymity to reveal details of the talks, said Russian proposed the following terms for a peace deal:
* The withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from the Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, Kherson and Luhansk regions of Ukraine, only after which there can be a ceasefire. The regions are largely or partially controlled by Russian forces, but Ukrainian troops are still fighting to hold on to the remaining parts of the regions. There was no such demand in the draft deal prepared by the United States.
* International recognition that five parts of Ukraine — the Crimea peninsula annexed in 2014, as well as the Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions — are Russian. The U.S. draft had proposed only U.S. de jure recognition for Crimea, and U.S. de facto recognition for Russian-controlled parts of the other regions.
* Ukraine becomes a neutral state, has no weapons of mass destruction, and Kyiv’s allies will not station any of their troops on Ukrainian soil. This demand was absent from the U.S. proposal.
* All sides in the conflict renounce their claims to receive compensation for war damages. The U.S. proposal had stipulated that Ukraine receives compensation.
According to the Ukrainian official, Russian negotiators transmitted those demands verbally, and did not share any document containing their terms.
Ukraine has already said the Russian negotiating position in Istanbul showed it was not serious about peace. Kyiv’s European allies are now pressing U.S. President Donald Trump to impose new sanctions on Russia.
The head of the Russian delegation at the talks expressed satisfaction with the meeting, and said Moscow was willing to keep talking to Kyiv.
The U.S. draft peace proposal from April was prepared after Trump envoy Steve Witkoff flew to Moscow for rounds of talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Kyiv and European allies drafted an alternative proposal, which stated there should be a ceasefire first so negotiations could start, and deferred any discussion of territory until later.

Oscar vibe for Jennifer Lawrence in marital psychodrama
Oscar vibe for Jennifer Lawrence in marital psychodrama
Last year, the Cannes Film Festival produced three best actress nominees at the Oscars. This year’s edition may have just supplied another.
In Lynne Ramsay’s Die, My Love, Jennifer Lawrence and Robert Pattinson play a married couple with a newborn who move into an old country house. In Ramsay’s messy and moving marital psychodrama, Lawrence plays an increasingly unhinged young mother named Grace whose postpartum depression reaches darkly hallucinatory extremes.
For Lawrence, the 34-year-old mother of two, making Die, My Love was an intensely personal experience.
“It was really hard to separate what I would do as opposed to what (Grace) would do,” Lawrence told reporters in Cannes.
“I had just had my firstborn, and there’s not really anything like postpartum. It’s extremely isolating. She doesn’t have a community. She doesn’t have her people. But the truth is, extreme anxiety and extreme depression is isolating, no matter where you are. You feel like an alien.”
Die, My Love, which is in competition for the Palme d’Or at Cannes, was one of the most anticipated premieres of the festival. That was owed partly to the wide respect for Ramsey, the Scottish director of Ratcatcher (1999), Movern Callar (2002) and You Were Never Really Here (2017).
In Ramsay’s Die, My Love, adapted from Ariana Harwicz’s 2017 novel, is disorienting experience, pulsating with animalistic urges and as a portrait of a marriage in trouble, it makes Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? look tame.
Lawrence’s performance, in particular, drew the kind of raves in Cannes that tend to lead to Oscar consideration. Lawrence has been nominated four times by the Academy Awards, winning once for 2013’s Silver Linings Playbook.
Since then, much has changed for Lawrence, including becoming a mother. On Saturday, Lawrence said parenthood has been such an enriching experience for her that, she joked, “I highly recommend having kids if you want to be an actor.”
“Having children changes everything. It changes your whole life. It’s brutal and incredible,” Lawrence said. “I didn’t know that I could feel so much.”
“My job has a lot to do with emotion, and they’ve opened up the world to me,” she added.
“It’s almost like feeling like a blister or something. So sensitive. So they’ve changed my life, obviously, for the best, and they’ve changed me creatively.”

Microsoft’s Phone Link Panel Arrives on Start Menu With Support for Android Devices: Report
Microsoft is said to be rolling out a new feature for Phone Link on Windows 11 which lets users take a peek at their messages, calls, and other information from the Start Menu. Although the feature was previously announced in the first week of May, users are now reportedly gaining access to the panel with the latest Windows 11 update. It’s currently unclear whether the dedicated panel for Phone Link on the Windows 11 Start Menu also works with paired iOS devices.
Microsoft Rolls Out Dedicated Phone Link Panel to All Users
The Phone Link is a mobile pairing application which comes preloaded on Windows 11. It lets users connect iOS or Android smartphone to their laptop or desktop computer, syncing text messages and images, and enabling support for making and receiving calls.
A dedicated panel for Phone Link was spotted by Android Authority on Windows-based PCs and was discovered on Windows 11 version 26100.4061. When an Android device is connected via Phone Link, it displays the phone model, battery status and connectivity details in a new panel which is located on the right side of the Windows’ Start Menu.
Microsoft says that the panel allows users to keep track of their latest activities by enabling them to access their phone calls, messages, and photos directly from the Start Menu. It also features a Recent tab which displays recently received files or notifications on the phone.
Users must follow the following steps to access the dedicated Phone Link feature on Windows 11:
Open the Start Menu and select the device type: Android or iPhone from the right-side pane.
Follow the on-screen instructions to pair your device with the Windows PC.
Start accessing your phone and its contents from the Start Menu.
The dedicated Phone Link panel also includes a Send files option which, as the name suggests, enables users to quickly transfer files between the phone and PC. They can either drag and drop files or select the required ones from the Browse option.
Microsoft first introduced this feature in 2024 to registered Windows Insiders in the Dev and Beta Channels and it initially included support for only Android. In January this year, it was expanded to include support for iOS devices too, enabling iPhone users to access their phone features via the Phone Link panel in the Start Menu.

Forecasters note an unusual pattern ahead of hurricane season
Forecasters note an unusual pattern ahead of hurricane season
An unusual pattern has emerged ahead of Atlantic hurricane season: No tropical cyclones have formed anywhere in the Northern Hemisphere in 2025 as of May 16.
This includes all tropical storms, hurricanes, typhoons and cyclones north of the equator in the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Oceans.
The dry spell is not unprecedented — in fact, something similar happened last year ahead of a devastating hurricane season in the United States.
The slow start has been matched 5 other times (1973, 1983, 1984, 1998, and 2024) in the last 75 years, according to Colorado State University meteorologist Phil Klotzbach. Most of those years ended with below-average seasons for the Northern Hemisphere overall.
On average, he said 3.5 storms typically would have formed by now.
More: A top hurricane forecast is here, and it brings bad news: Danger is already brewing
Is this quiet stretch unusual?
Typically the Atlantic, eastern North Pacific and North Indian Ocean are pretty quiet through mid-May, Klotzbach said.
“So, the western North Pacific tends to be the primary contributor to named storm activity this time of year,” he told USA TODAY.
The quiet in the western Pacific is due to unusual wind patterns near the Philippines. “This wind pattern creates anti-cyclonic flow, which is not supportive for storm formations,” he said.
Does this mean anything for the rest of the season?
Klotzbach said that’s hard to say. “For example, the average number of Northern Hemisphere named storms in a season is 62. Here are the final Northern Hemisphere named storm totals for the other years that had no named storms through May 16:
“4 of the 5 years ended up with below-average Northern Hemisphere named storms, but 2024 was just slightly below normal,” he said.
1973 was an unusually quiet year for storms in the Northern Hemisphere. That year set a record for the latest first storm, Klotzbach said: Ava formed in the eastern North Pacific on June 2 that year.
What about Southern Hemisphere storms?
Unlike the Northern Hemisphere, the Southern Hemisphere has been quite busy during the 2024-25 season (July 1, 2024 – present).
Southern Hemisphere storms include those that threaten locations such as Australia.
He said 31 Southern Hemisphere named storms have formed so far, while the average is 25 named storms through May 16.
A satellite image from May 16, 2025, shows mainly clear skies in the western Pacific Ocean near the Philippines (center). An unusual wind pattern has prevented storms from forming in the western Pacific this year.
What’s the forecast for the rest of May?
Meteorologist Ryan Maue, also on X, said that while an early season tropical storm is possible in the Eastern Pacific through the end of May, top weather models show a quiet pattern for the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico (renamed the Gulf of America by the U.S. government).
