  3. Weather wreaks havoc, but Aussie golfer does it Wright Weather wreaks havoc, but Aussie golfer does it Wright The first major of the PGA Tour Champions season will have a late finish after multiple weather delays affected the Regions Tradition. American Jerry Kelly and Argentina’s Angel Cabrera are tied for the lead at 18 under par, one stroke ahead of South Korea’s Y.E. Yang, with a handful of holes left to play in the fourth round at Greystone Golf and Country Club in Birmingham, Alabama. The leading *********** was Michael Wright, who did manage to complete his final round, finishing outright eighth at 14 under after rounds of 70, 71, 66 and 67. Compatriot Richard Green finished tied for 15th at 11 under. Green had opened the tournament with a blistering 63, followed by a 68, but a 75 in the third round scuppered his title hopes. He rounded out his week with a one-under 71. The tournament resumes at 9am on Monday (local time). The final threesome of Kelly, Yang and South Korea’s Charlie Wi (16 under) were on the par-5 15th hole, while Cabrera and New Zealand’s Steven Alker (16 under) were on the par-4 16th when tour officials suspended the round because of darkness. Multiple players, including Kelly and Wi, were seen on the Golf Channel broadcast telling rules officials they could not see in the dying light. Shortly before the decision was made, Cabrera three-putted for bogey at the par-5 15th to fall into a tie with Kelly. He had made birdie at seven of his first 13 holes to charge up the leaderboard after starting Sunday three shots off Kelly’s lead. The final round did not get under way until noon (local time) because of heavy rain. Play was then suspended for inclement weather about 1.20pm and restarted at 3pm before the leaders had even begun their rounds. Kelly, Yang and Wi were all three under for their rounds through 14 holes. Alker was three under through 15 holes. ********* Stephen Ames was on the par-5 18th hole and was able to finish with a 4-under-par 68. He is tied for sixth with Chris DiMarco at 15 under. The round of the day was a seven-under 65 from Spaniard Miguel Angel Jimenez, which pushed him into a tie for ninth at 13 under. Technically, aside from a few minor gripes with controls and performing certain actions, it’s pretty solid and quite stable. Morally, it’s got some mild if cartoonish violence with little else of note. Overall, I enjoy Palworld, and if you want a survival sim mixed with collectible monsters to make your pals, this is a great game with those themes.” Source link #Palworld #preview #ChristCenteredGamer #N4G Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

  7. 13 Famous People Who Just Up And Disappeared One Day (And Are Now Presumed Dead) 13 Famous People Who Just Up And Disappeared One Day (And Are Now Presumed Dead) Warning: this post includes mentions of addiction, depression, and suicide. 1.Richey Edwards was the intense, brilliant lyricist for the Manic Street Preachers, penning most of the lyrics of their iconic 1994 album The Holy ******. Just before a U.S. promo tour, the 27-year-old vanished. Mick Hutson / Redferns / Getty Images WHAT HAPPENED: Just one day before he was scheduled to fly to the U.S., on Feb. 1, 1995, the 27-year-old Edwards went missing. He was reportedly seen by fans and a cab driver in the following days, but his car was eventually found near the Severn Bridge, a known suicide site. At the time, Edwards was struggling with depression, self-harm, anorexia, and alcoholism. Still, no body was ever found. In 2008, over a decade later, his family had him legally presumed dead, but as their lawyer explained, it was more a move to get his affairs in order, saying, “That’s not the same as an acceptance that he is dead.” Clive Gee – Pa Images / PA Images via Getty Images WHY IT’S SO MYSTERIOUS: In the years since, people have claimed to spot the musician all over the world — Goa, the Canary Islands — always under a new name, always just out of reach. Some point to his fascination with disappearing as a concept. Before he vanished, he reportedly gave the book Novel with ******** to a friend and asked them to read the introduction, where the author wrote about vanishing from society. A 2019 book on Edwards entitled Withdrawn Traces, written with the cooperation of his sister Rachel Edwards, echoes this, saying that he’d shown interest in the idea of faking one’s death in the years before he was last seen. As Rachel told GQ, “We know no more now than we did 25 years ago.” 2.Lord Richard John Bingham, aka Lord Lucan, was a charming, wealthy, and scandal-ridden British aristocrat. A professional gambler and regular at London’s poshest clubs, Lucan was known for living lavishly, despite a crumbling marriage and big-time money problems (he was a gambler, remember). Express / Getty Images WHAT HAPPENED: On the night of November 7, 1974, Lucan’s children’s nanny, 29-year-old Sandra Rivett, was bludgeoned to death in the family home. That same night Lucan’s estranged wife Veronica stumbled into a pub, covered in blood. She said she too had been attacked and identified her husband as the assailant. Lucan fled the scene, abandoned his car near a port, and was never seen again. PA Images / PA Images via Getty Images WHY IT’S SO MYSTERIOUS: Is this a tale as old as time, of a rich guy escaping accountability for his wrongdoing thanks to big bucks and friends in high places? Maybe. Theories abound. Some believe his aristocratic friends helped him escape to Africa or South America. Over the years, there have been dozens of alleged sightings — in New Zealand, Australia, and even India — but none confirmed. Others, however, say he died by suicide…perhaps by jumping into the water near the port? He was declared legally dead in 1999, but rumors have persisted that he lived under a new identity for decades. Wildly, just last year, Sandra’s son Neil and an investigator tracked down a 90-year-old man in Australia they believe to be Lucan living in secret, but have yet to convince local authorities. Whatever the truth, Lord Lucan remains Britain’s most famous fugitive. 3.Barbara Newhall Follett came from a family of very bright people (her sister, for example, was the first woman graduate student at Princeton), but she was the brightest of them all. She wrote poetry at age 4 and in 1927, and at just 12, she published her first book, The House Without Windows, to critical acclaim (The Saturday Review of Literature called the book “almost unbearably beautiful”). Her next novel came out two years later to more critical acclaim. But fame faded, her father (and champion) left the family, and her life slowly unraveled. WHAT HAPPENED: In 1939, at age 25, after a fight with her husband (whom she suspected of an affair), Barbara walked out of their apartment with the equivalent of just under $700 in today’s dollars. She left no note. No trace. Her husband didn’t report her missing for two weeks. She was never seen again. WHY IT’S SO MYSTERIOUS: Some believe Barbara died by suicide. Others think she was murdered — possibly by her husband, who acted strangely and avoided questioning. Of course, a pretty young woman walking alone at night with a decent chunk of change in her pocket was at risk from other threats, too. For years, her mother tried to reopen the case but got nowhere. She also was very suspicious of Barbara’s husband, and wrote to him, “All of this silence on your part looks as if you had something to hide concerning Barbara’s disappearance … You cannot believe that I shall sit idle during my last few years and not make whatever effort I can to find out whether Bar is alive or dead, whether, perhaps, she is in some institution suffering from amnesia or nervous breakdown.” In 2019, writer Daniel Mills published his theory that police did find Barbara’s body in 1946, but misidentified it as someone else. If he’s right, and Barbara did indeed die by suicide, then a life that began with such incredible promise ended in a deeply sad way. 4.Michael Rockefeller was American royalty. The 23-year-old son of New York Governor and future Vice President of the United States Nelson Rockefeller (who would die while having sex, as described in this post), was an art collector, anthropologist, and heir to one of the richest families in U.S. history. To his credit, he often turned his back on a life of luxury to seek out adventure. Keystone / Getty Images WHAT HAPPENED: In 1961, Michael and a colleague were on an expedition in Papua New Guinea to collect Indigenous art when their pontoon boat capsized, stranding them miles from shore in a catamaran. After drifting a while, Michael tired of waiting to be rescued and reportedly said, “I think I can make it,” then paddled off toward land using empty gas cans as flotation. His colleague watched him until he disappeared on the horizon. He was never seen again. Bettmann / Bettmann Archive WHY IT’S SO MYSTERIOUS: Despite a two-week search for Rockefeller involving ships, airplanes, helicopters, and thousands of locals scouring the coasts and swamps, no trace of the heir was found. At first, it was assumed he drowned, was eaten by a shark or 15-foot crocodile, or died from exposure (after all, he was 14 miles from shore when he set out for it). But New Guinea’s coastal tribes had a complex history with outsiders, including brutal colonial violence. Rumors quickly spread that Michael had made it to shore… only to be killed and cannibalized by members of the Asmat tribe, with his bones being turned into weapons and fishing gear. Over the decades, several documentaries and books — including Savage Harvest — have explored this theory. One even claims Michael assimilated into tribal life and lived in secret. But despite deep dives by journalists and even the Rockefeller family (using their deep pockets to try to get to the bottom of what happened), no definitive proof has ever emerged. 5.Dorothy Arnold was everything you’d expect from a New York socialite: elegant, well-educated, extravagantly rich, and constantly in the public eye. She dreamed of being a writer, but kept her failed publishing attempts a secret from her disapproving parents. And then — one day — she was just…gone. Bain News Service / Library of Congress / Via loc.gov WHAT HAPPENED: On Dec. 12, 1910, the 25-year-old left her family’s Upper East Side home to buy a new evening gown. She stopped by a bookstore and bought a copy of the short-story collection Engaged Girl Sketches, then chatted briefly with a friend on Fifth Avenue. That was around 2 p.m. And then…nothing. She vanished in broad daylight, on one of Manhattan’s busiest streets, never to be seen again. Her family waited a full day before going to the police — not because they weren’t worried, but because they were embarrassed. Her father even hired Pinkerton detectives to look for her in secret, worried that a public scandal could hurt her reputation. But weeks passed. Then months. No body, no note, no confirmed sightings. Bain News Service / Library of Congress / Via loc.gov WHY IT’S SO MYSTERIOUS: Over the years, countless theories emerged. Some believed Dorothy died by suicide over her failed writing career or an unrequited love (could the book she bought about engagements be a clue?). Others suggested she died during a botched abortion, and her body had been quietly disposed of. A few speculated she was murdered in Central Park or kidnapped right off the street. One popular theory? She faked her own death and fled (perhaps to Europe) to start over. She had, after all, bristled against her parents’ protectiveness (her father, for example, had refused to let her get an apartment of her own). But despite alleged sightings of her everywhere from Philadelphia to Texas (later discredited), and at least two women who claimed to be Dorothy (all proven to be impostors), there simply was no proof of this. Her heartbroken mother died in 1928, still hoping for answers, while her father, who dismissed the idea that his daughter would ever “disgrace” the family by sneaking off without a trace, passed away a few years later. In one of his final interviews, he declared, “After all these years, I am convinced that Dorothy is dead.” 6.Jim Sullivan was a folk-rock musician in the style of Gram Parsons or Nick Drake who appeared in the classic film Easy Rider. His 1969 debut album U.F.O. was filled with lyrics about desert roads, aliens, and leaving Earth behind — the kind of stuff that didn’t exactly scream “chart-topper,” lol — but it built a cult following years later. Above, Jim appears in the 1968 film The Pickup. WHAT HAPPENED: In March 1975, Sullivan left L.A. to drive to Nashville in hopes of kickstarting his music career. En route, he checked into a motel in Santa Rosa, New Mexico, then bought a bottle of vodka and drove out of town. He was spotted 26 miles away at a ranch…and then never again. His car was later found abandoned with his wallet, ID, guitar, and belongings still inside. WHY IT’S SO MYSTERIOUS: Locals said he seemed disoriented in the days before he vanished. Theories ranged from dehydration or a mental health crisis to foul play (perhaps by the ******). But no remains were ever found, and no one reported seeing him after that day. The surreal part is how closely Sullivan’s real-life disappearance mirrors the themes of his music. His album U.F.O. opens with a track about a man who drives into the desert and disappears. The eerie coincidence made fans wonder: was Jim trying to vanish? Did he have a breakdown? Or — as some like to joke — was he actually abducted by aliens (hey, it’s as good a guess as any)? Nearly 50 years later, there are still zero clues about what happened. His old friend Al Dobbs told the New York Times, “I think he stumbled into something or someone that was unforgiving. It’s kind of poetic to picture him still walking out there somewhere. But something happened.” 7.Connie Converse was writing and recording deeply personal songs in the ’50s — way, way before the singer-songwriter era made that cool. Her voice was intimate and her lyrics literary, but her life became increasingly complicated as the years rolled by. WHAT HAPPENED: After years of struggling to find an audience, Connie left New York in the early ’60s, moved in with family, and fell into a depression. In August 1974, she wrote letters to friends and family saying she needed to “make a new life,” packed up her Volkswagen Beetle, and drove away. She was 50. No one has heard from her since. WHY IT’S SO MYSTERIOUS: In the decades since, a new generation fell in love with her melancholy brilliance. But what happened to her remains unknown. The letters she left behind could be interpreted as suicide notes, but they also mentioned returning to New York and her music career. And, if they were suicide notes, why was her body never found? Or her car, for that matter? Ten years later, her brother contacted a private investigator about searching for her, but decided to let it be; if she wanted to start a new life, that was her right. Here’s hoping that is what happened, and there’s not a darker explanation. 8.Percy Fawcett was the real-life inspiration for Indiana Jones — a British explorer obsessed with the uncharted Amazon and the belief that a lost ancient civilization was hidden within it. He called it the City of “Z.” Topical Press Agency / Getty Images WHAT HAPPENED: In 1925, the 57-year-old Fawcett set out into the Brazilian jungle with his 21-year-old son Jack and Jack’s best friend Raleigh with big plans to finally locate the city he’d spent decades theorizing about. “We shall return,” Fawcett told reporters ahead of the trip, “and we shall bring back what we seek.” However, after sending a final message via courier from a remote outpost, the entire party vanished. No confirmed trace of any of them was ever found. Royal Geographical Society / Royal Geographical Society via Getty Images WHY IT’S SO MYSTERIOUS: Over 100 would-be rescuers and adventurers followed in Fawcett’s footsteps in the years that followed. Some vanished themselves. Others were killed by tribes in the region. A few came back convinced Fawcett had died, or with wild stories of seeing him alive and living among Indigenous people, but none of these accounts could be verified. So what DID happen? Well, let’s be real for a second — dying was easy in the jungle. Between piranha-infested waters, dangerous jaguars, and the risk of malaria, parasitic infection, and starvation, there were all kinds of potential tragic ends for the group. Some believe hostile tribes killed him. That’s possible. In 2005, Kalapalo Indians claimed that their oral history passed down that Fawcett made the mistake of crossing into the land of the warlike tribe, the Kalapalos. And then there are the diehards who still believe he found the mythical city… and stayed there. You know what? Let’s go with that happy explanation, especially because it sounds the most like the ending of an Indiana Jones adventure. 9.Amelia Earhart was already a global icon when, in 1937, she set out to become the first woman to fly around the world. Smart, daring, and fiercely independent, she was the face of American aviation — and one of the most famous people in the world. But she’s on this list, so you already know the trip didn’t end well. Ullstein Bild Dtl. / ullstein bild via Getty Images WHAT HAPPENED: On July 2, 1937, somewhere over the Pacific Ocean near Howland Island, contact with Earhart’s plane was lost. She and navigator Fred ******* were never seen again. Despite one of the largest and most expensive search efforts ever launched at the time, neither wreckage nor bodies were recovered. Interim Archives / Getty Images WHY IT’S SO MYSTERIOUS: There are, of course, lots of theories about what happened. Some say she ran out of fuel and crashed into the sea. Others believe she ******-landed on a nearby island and died as a castaway. Then there’s the theory that she was captured and killed by the Japanese after accidentally flying into territory they controlled. The thing is, no matter how hard people try, no one ever seems able to crack the mystery (recently, an ocean exploration company claimed to have found her plane underwater…it turned out to be a rock formation, lol). This year, there will supposedly be an expedition to Nikumaroro Island, based on a theory that Earhart’s plane landed on the island’s reef and later sank. The team plans to investigate an underwater anomaly, dubbed the “Taraia Object,” which may be the missing aircraft. Hmm. I’ll believe it when I see it. 10.Harold Holt was Prime Minister of Australia and a close ally of United States President Lyndon B. Johnson when he went for a swim and vanished into the ocean. Bettmann / Getty Images WHAT HAPPENED: On December 17, 1967, Holt went for a swim at Cheviot Beach near Portsea, Victoria. It wasn’t a great idea — the conditions were rough and the currents strong. Holt swam out to sea and then disappeared from view…forever. The government launched one of the largest search operations in *********** history, but no body ever washed ashore; nothing turned up. Keystone / Getty Images WHY IT’S SO MYSTERIOUS: Sure, it’s most likely he drowned. But Holt said he knew the swimming spot like the back of his hand (in fact, the above photo is of him in the water at the same spot where he disappeared), so conspiracy theories quickly piled up. Some believe he faked his death to run off with a lover. Others claimed he was a ******** spy who was picked up by a submarine (don’t bet your life savings on that one being true). More grounded theories point to the rough conditions and strong currents…and the fact that Holt had a history of heart issues. But still — how does the leader of a country vanish during a casual swim with zero trace? 11.Glenn Miller was one of the world’s biggest stars, famous as the bandleader whose swing music defined a generation. But when World War II began, he enlisted as a captain in the U.S. Army Air Forces and led the Army Air Forces Band with a mission to boost morale. “This was a lot of hard work, a lot of hard times, a lot of bad, dangerous traveling,” according to NPR’s Noah Adams. It worked, though, and Miller was promoted to General just a few months before he was last seen. GAB Archive / Redferns WHAT HAPPENED: On December 15, 1944, Miller boarded a small aircraft in England headed for Paris, where his band was scheduled to perform. Somewhere over the English Channel, the plane vanished. No mayday call. No ****** site. No bodies. Just gone. Bettmann / Bettmann Archive WHY IT’S SO MYSTERIOUS: In truth, this one is probably the least mysterious disappearance on the list, as bad weather most likely brought down the plane. But no wreckage was ever found, and wartime secrecy muddied the records. One of the most famous people in the world did indeed…vanish. Rumors flew in the aftermath: some said the plane was hit by friendly fire, while others spread a very far-fetched conspiracy theory that he died in a Paris ******** and the plane story was a cover-up. (That one has zero evidence, but it’s out there.) Officially, Glenn Miller was lost in a wartime accident, and we can only guess at exactly how he met his demise. Sadly, his fans learned of his tragic fate on Christmas Day, 1944. 12.Ambrose Bierce was one of America’s greatest writers, a journalist and author who survived the Civil War and wrote the classic The ******’s Dictionary, which defines “peace” as “a ******* of cheating between two periods of fighting.” Bettmann / Bettmann Archive WHAT HAPPENED: In 1913, at age 71, Bierce joined Pancho Villa’s rebel army in Mexico as a war correspondent. He wrote a few letters from the front — one ending with the line “To be a gringo in Mexico — ah, that is euthanasia!” — and then stopped writing. Completely. There were no confirmed sightings, no remains, and no definitive reports of his fate. Bettmann / Bettmann Archive WHY IT’S SO MYSTERIOUS: An official investigation by U.S. consular officials was conducted, but it only confused things further. Some say he was killed during battle (most likely the siege of Ojinaga in January 1914). Others think Villa’s men executed him. And some believe he was never in Mexico at all — that his letters from Mexico were subterfuge to allow him to secretly die by suicide at the Grand Canyon. The truth will likely never be known. 13.Oscar Zeta Acosta was a larger-than-life figure: a Chicano activist, lawyer, novelist, and the real-life inspiration for Dr. Gonzo in Hunter S. Thompson’s Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (played by Benicio Del Toro in the movie). A firebrand in every sense, this dude was always in the middle of something intense. Andy Cross / Denver Post via Getty Images Above, Denver artist Adolfo Romero paints a mural of Oscar Zeta Acosta in 2018. WHAT HAPPENED: In 1974, Acosta — who had become increasingly erratic and involved with drugs — traveled to Mexico where he called his son and told him he was “about to board a boat full of white snow.” That was the last anyone ever heard from him. WHY IT’S SO MYSTERIOUS: What does “about to board a boat full of white snow” mean? ********? His buddy Hunter S. Thompson seemed to think it was something like that, saying Acosta probably “ate too much peyote and walked off a cliff.” Later, though, he investigated his friend’s disappearance and speculated he might have been killed by drug dealers or was the target of a political assassination. But no one really knows. Some think he faked his death to escape his mounting legal troubles and public burnout. His son Marco said, “The body was never found, but we surmise that, probably, knowing the people he was involved with, he ended up mouthing off, getting into a fight, and getting killed.” Maybe it is as simple as his son says. But like all of these stories, there just isn’t a definitive answer as to what the heck happened. Credit: Venus Aerospace Houston-based startup Venus Aerospace has completed the first-ever test flight of a rotating detonation rocket engine (RDRE) in the United States. The launch took place on Wednesday (May 14) from Spaceport America in New Mexico. A small rocket equipped with Venus’ RDRE lifted off at 9:37 a.m. EDT (1337 GMT; 7:37 a.m. local time in New Mexico). The milestone marked the first successful test of such an engine from U.S. soil and took Venus a “step closer to making high-speed flight accessible, affordable and sustainable,” the company said in a statement. Venus Aerospace conducted the first-ever test flight with its rotating detonation rocket engine on May 14, 2025. | Credit: Venus Aerospace “This is the moment we’ve been working toward for five years,” Venus CEO Sassie Duggleby said in the statement. The test serves as a proof of design for Venus’s RDRE and keeps the company on track for runway-based high-speed flight, she added: “We’ve proven that this technology works — not just in simulations or the lab, but in the air.” The Venus RDRE uses a compact, high-efficiency design the company hopes can eventually power aircraft up to Mach 6 — six times the speed of sound — starting from conventional runways. Compared to traditional rocket engines, RDREs offer greater thrust in smaller packages, but up until now the technology has been mostly theoretical. Normally, rocket engines burn fuel in a combustion chamber in a steady, controlled process. RDREs use a continuous detonation wave that travels in a circle within a ring-shaped chamber, which produces higher pressure and efficiency and results in increased thrust with less fuel. (Hypersonic flight is generally defined as Mach 5 and above.) “This is the foundation we need that, combined with a ramjet, completes the system from takeoff to sustained hypersonic flight,” Andrew Duggleby said. With the successful test in the books, Venus is planning full-scale propulsion test of their integrated system as it moves to qualify the design of its future Stargazer M4, a reusable passenger aircraft capable of reaching Mach 4. WA and Perth weather: Warmer weather not here to stay as cold fronts brings rain to metro area later this week WA and Perth weather: Warmer weather not here to stay as cold fronts brings rain to metro area later this week Despite Perth holding onto the summer weather for longer than expected, the city is finally in for some wet and rainy autumn days. Temperatures have remained high for the last few months, but conditions are set to change later this week. The Bureau of Meteorology is forecasting a shower or two on Thursday before temperatures drop to below 20C on Friday. Meteorologist Jess Lingard said the change in weather is due to two cold fronts passing through the south of WA. The first, coming Monday, will bring light rains to the South West and chilly mornings to the metropolitan area. The second cold front will occur later in the week, bringing with it higher chances of rain. “It will arrive looking like a stronger and more significant system… likely to bring with it some higher rainfall totals as well,” Ms Lingard said. “For the metro area we’re going to continue to see some light showers… we will also see some significantly cooler temperatures.” The showers will continue throughout the weekend with temperatures in the mid to high teens. PERTH WEATHER: MONDAY: 25C, mostly sunny TUESDAY: 23C, sunny WEDNESDAY: 25C, sunny THURSDAY: 24C, sunny morning, shower or two FRIDAY: 18C, showers easing SATURDAY: 17C, showers or two SUNDAY: 19C, showers Source link #Perth #weather #Warmer #weather #stay #cold #fronts #brings #rain #metro #area #week Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

Mysteriously Perfect Sphere Spotted in Space by Astronomers Mysteriously Perfect Sphere Spotted in Space by Astronomers Our Milky Way galaxy is home to some extremely weird things, but a new discovery has astronomers truly baffled. In data collected by a powerful radio telescope, astronomers have found what appears to be a perfectly spherical bubble. We know more or less what it is – it’s the ball of expanding material ejected by an exploding star, a supernova remnant – but how it came to be is more of a puzzle. A large international team led by astrophysicist Miroslav Filipović of Western Sydney University in Australia has named the object Teleios, after the ancient Greek for “perfection”. After an exhaustive review of the possibilities, the researchers conclude that we’re going to need more information to understand how this object formed. ASKAP radio continuum observation of Teleios and its surroundings. The galactic plane can be seen at the top of the image. (Filipović et al., arXiv, 2025) Their analysis has been submitted to the Publications of the Astronomical Society of Australia, and is available on preprint server arXiv. The *********** Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) has been uncovering a trove of peculiar circles of various kinds in the sky as part of its Evolutionary Map of the Universe (EMU) survey. Some of them at intergalactic distances have been a little difficult to figure out, like the famous Odd Radio Circles (ORCS). Teleios, located within the Milky Way, has a different origin story than the ORCS found across the deep cosmos, but even though it is closer and therefore smaller, an inability to narrow down exactly how far away it is has proven a significant barrier to understanding its origin. Filipović and his colleagues conducted a thorough analysis of the object, and found that it glows faintly only in radio wavelengths. The wavelength of its glow revealed it most likely to be the remnant of a Type Ia supernova – one of the brightest types of supernova in the Universe. These supernovae occur when a white dwarf in a close binary orbit with a companion star slurps up so much material from said companion that it exceeds its mass limit and explodes. A zoomed-in look at Teleios from the radio continuum observation. (Filipović et al., arXiv, 2025) So far, so straightforward. But working out distances to things in space is surprisingly quite difficult. The researchers were able to work out estimates for the distance to Teleios, but couldn’t narrow it down beyond two options – around 7,175 light-years, and around 25,114 light-years. As you can imagine, both of these distances would mean different things for the evolutionary history of Teleios. Because things look smaller the farther away they are, the two distances would yield vastly different sizes for the bubble. At the nearer distance, the supernova remnant would be 46 light-years across. At the greater distance, it would be 157 light-years across. A supernova remnant often consists of an expanding cloud of material – so each of these sizes suggests a different age for the remnant. The closer distance suggests a younger supernova remnant that has had less time to grow, less than 1,000 years. At the greater distance, it would have to be more than 10,000 years old. The problem with both of these scenarios is that evolutionary models of Type Ia supernovae predict there should also be X-rays. The lack of X-rays is a bit of a head-scratcher. Another possibility is that Teleios is the remnant of a Type Iax supernova, a kind of Type Ia supernova that doesn’t destroy the white dwarf entirely, but leaves behind a ‘zombie’ star remnant. This neatly fits Teleios’s emission properties, but it would need to be a lot closer, around 3,262 light-years away. This scenario would mean Teleios is a bit smaller, about 11 light-years across. There’s even a star at that distance that could be a candidate for the zombie star… but none of the other independent measurements of the distance to Teleios find that it could be that close. This image of Teleios shows some of its polarization properties. (Filipović et al., arXiv, 2025) All these other issues make the unusual issue of the remnant’s near-perfect symmetry fade into the background a little. Supernova remnants are almost always asymmetrical in some way. The explosion itself may be asymmetrical; the expanding material may push into interstellar gas or dust that was already hanging out nearby; and eventually, the shell will expand enough to start to fragment. However, if the supernova is symmetrical and takes place in an empty enough region of space, it can expand symmetrically. It just hasn’t yet reached the point of fragmentation. It’s a rare sight, but not an impossible one. That makes Teleios pretty nifty, really. We’re just going to need to look at it a bit more to work out its story. “We have made an exhaustive exploration of the possible evolutionary state of the supernova based on its surface brightness, apparent size and possible distances,” the researchers write. “All possible scenarios have their challenges, especially considering the lack of X-ray emission that is expected to be detectable given our evolutionary modelling. While we deem the Type Ia scenario the most likely, we note that no direct evidence is available to definitively confirm any scenario and new sensitive and high-resolution observations of this object are needed.” Their paper can be read on arXiv. 14. China’s April retail sales growth of 5.1% misses expectations as consumption remains a worry China’s April retail sales growth of 5.1% misses expectations as consumption remains a worry Citizens are shopping at a supermarket in Nanjing, East China’s Jiangsu province, on March 9, 2024. Costfoto | Nurphoto | Getty Images China’s retail sales growth slowed in April, data from the National Bureau of Statistics showed Monday, signaling that consumption remains a worry for the world’s second-largest economy. Retail sales rose 5.1% from a year earlier in April, missing analysts’ estimates of 5.5% growth, according to a Reuters poll. Sales had grown by 5.9% in the previous month. Industrial output grew 6.1% year on year in April, stronger than analysts’ expectations for a 5.5% rise. Fixed-asset investment for the first four months this year, which includes property and infrastructure investment, expanded 4.0%, slightly lower than analysts’ expectations for a 4.2% growth in a Reuters poll. The urban survey-based unemployment rate in April eased to 5.1% from 5.2% in March. The data comes against the backdrop of trade tensions between China and the U.S. U.S. President Donald Trump placed tariffs of 145% on imports from China that came into effect in April. Beijing retaliated with tariffs in kind, with 125% levies on American imports. Trade-war fears have receded after a meeting of U.S. and ******** trade representatives in Switzerland earlier this month led to a lower set of levies between the world’s two largest economies. Beijing and Washington agreed to roll back most of the tariffs imposed on each other’s goods for 90 days, allowing some room for further negotiation to reach a more lasting deal. That prompted a slew of global investment banks to raise their forecasts for China’s economic growth this year while paring back expectations for more proactive stimulus as Beijing strives to reach its growth target of around 5%. This is breaking news. Please check back later for updates. 16. British Kenton Cool reaches record 19th summit British Kenton Cool reaches record 19th summit British mountaineer Kenton Cool has scaled Mount Everest for the 19th time, breaking his own record for the most climbs up the world’s tallest mountain for a non-sherpa. The 51-year-old, who was accompanied by Nepali sherpa Dorji Gyaljen, reached the 8,849m (29,000ft) high summit at 11:00 local time (04:15 GMT) on Sunday. Mr Cool first climbed Everest in 2004 and has summited it almost yearly since. Mr Gyaljen logged his 23rd climb up Everest. Another Nepali sherpa, Kami Rita, holds the record for making the most number of Everest summits at 30, and is also currently on the mountain attempting to set a new record. Mr Cool’s record-setting feat comes after at least two climbers – Subrata Ghosh from India and Philipp “PJ” Santiago II from the Philippines – died on Mount Everest this week. After his 16th Everest ascent in 2022, Mr Cool appeared to play down his record, noting that many Nepali climbers have surpassed it. “I’m really surprised by the interest… considering that so many of the sherpas have so many more ascents,” he told AFP in an interview then. Four days before the latest feat, Mr Cool told his Instagram followers that he “finally [had] a positive forecast” that will allow him to go ahead with the attempt. “Let’s hope that we manage to thread the needle with regard to numbers of climbers and we have a safe and enjoyable time up high,” he wrote. Fellow climbers hailed the achievement. Mr Cool is a “great person to share stories from two decades on the mountain”, American adventurer Adrian Ballinger told Reuters news agency. “His experience, charisma, and strength make him a valuable part of the Everest community,” says Mr Ballinger, who is currently guiding a team up Everest. “Amazing, Kenton,” wrote Jordanian mountaineer Mostafa Salameh, who is one of only 20 people to complete the climb the highest mountains on all seven continents and conquer the North and South Poles. Mr Cool is also a mountain guide who has lead British explorer Sir Ranulph Fiennes, among others, on several notable climbs including Everest. 17. Polish pro-EU candidate holds narrow presidential lead Polish pro-EU candidate holds narrow presidential lead Polish liberals performed worse than expected in a presidential election, exit polls show, as Rafal Trzaskowski from ruling centrists Civic Coalition (KO) scraped to victory, setting up a close fight for Warsaw’s pro-European path. Trzaskowski placed first with 31.2 per cent of the vote, ahead of Karol Nawrocki, the candidate backed by the nationalist Law and Justice (PiS) party, who had 29.7 per cent, according to an Ipsos late poll. The gap was much narrower than the 4-7 percentage points seen in opinion polls before the vote. If confirmed, the result would mean Trzaskowski and Nawrocki will go head-to-head in a runoff vote on June 1 to determine whether Poland sticks firmly on the pro-European track set by Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk or moves closer to nationalist admirers of US President Donald Trump. “We are going for victory. I said that it would be close and it is close,” Trzaskowski told supporters. “There is a lot, a lot, of work ahead of us and we need determination.” Nawrocki also told supporters he was confident of victory in the second round and called on the far-right to get behind him and “save Poland”. “We have to win these elections so that there is no monopoly of power of one political group, so that there is no monolithic power in Poland,” he said. An Opinia24 poll for private broadcaster TVN published after the first round gave Trzaskowski 46 per cent in the run-off and Nawrocki 44 per cent, with 10 per cent of voters either undecided or refusing to say. Far-right candidates Slawomir Mentzen and Grzegorz Braun scored more than 21 per cent combined, a historically high score. Braun, who in 2023 used a fire extinguisher to put out Hanukkah candles in the country’s parliament, an incident that caused international outrage, won 6.3 per cent of the vote according to the late poll. Mentzen stopped short of immediately endorsing Nawrocki. “Voters … are not sacks of potatoes, they are not thrown from one place to another,” he said. “Each of our voters is a conscious, intelligent person and will make their own decision.” Source link #Polish #proEU #candidate #holds #narrow #presidential #lead Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  18. A couple’s first date ended in horror after both were shot; only one survived. A couple’s first date ended in horror after both were shot; only one survived. This story originally aired on Nov. 2, 2024. It was updated on May 17, 2025. On the afternoon of Thanksgiving Day 2021, Nanette Stuiber sat in her car and watched anxiously as EMTs and Montgomery County Sheriff Deputies descended on a house in the tiny village of Farmersville, Illinois. Nanette Stuiber: I was quite upset and kinda going crazy in the car. Stuiber had been unable to reach her good friend Leslie Reeves. Stuiber knew Leslie had gone to that house the night before to go on a first date with Chris Smith, a man she had met online. Nanette Stuiber: She was extremely excited. She thought it might be a really good connection … But now Stuiber was worried. She had called 911 to request a ******** check. She’d seen Smith get taken away in an ambulance but there was no sign of Reeves. Nanette Stuiber: I kept hoping … bring Leslie out, please … Finally, a detective approached and asked Stuiber for a photo of Reeves. She showed him her phone and he gave her the horrible news. Nanette Stuiber: “I’m sorry to have to tell you this … your friend has, um, been murdered,” you know, shot, he said. He didn’t tell me where, but he did say, “I want you to know that she went very quickly.” Leslie Reeves and Chris Smith / Credit: -Bethany Smith Stephan/Sharon Costanza EMTs had found Smith barely conscious and unable to say anything about the shooting. They rushed him to the hospital and deputies searched the house. Later that day, crime scene investigator Josh Easton of the Illinois State Police was called to the scene and he began cataloging the mayhem inside. Erin Moriarty: What do you see when you first approach the door? Josh Easton: I notice that the … side door of the house … the glass in the door has been broken out. Josh Easton: The refrigerator was pulled away from the wall … kitchen table was pushed … the — the chairs were knocked over … Crime scene investigator Josh Easton said No weapon was found, leading investigators to suspect that a third person was involved. Easton took note of every detail, including the burnt pizza in the oven. Josh Easton: I assume that maybe they were cooking … a pizza for the night and the suspect shows up at the door … they both tried to fight him off and when Chris was shot, Leslie went to the living room … to try to try to hide. Erin Moriarty: How many times was she shot? Josh Easton: She was only shot one time. Erin Moriarty: In the head. Josh Easton: In the head. Reeves’ body was in the living room while Smith had been found in the kitchen. Easton said, of the 1,800 crime scenes he’d been to, this was one of the most horrific. Josh Easton: There was blood everywhere … The cabinets, the refrigerator, the countertop, there was blood from corner to corner in the kitchen. Easton spotted two silver-colored bullet casings from a 9 mm gun — one in the kitchen and the other near Reeves’ body. A DEADLY FIRST DATE As Easton processed the scene, detectives began learning about the victims. Smith was a 48-year-old divorced father who worked for a pool contractor. Dena LeGrand: Chris was a nice guy. He would hang out here frequently, was friends with most of the people in town. Everybody knew him. Chris Smith, 48., was a divorced father who worked for a pool contractor. / Credit: Sharon Costanza Bartender Dena LeGrand says Smith was well known in town as the guy who grew banana trees and giant pumpkins. Dena LeGrand: I remember one Halloween … he donated hundreds of pumpkins for decorations for any of the kids to paint … he gave back to his community. Sharon Costanza is Smith’s mother. Ashli Holcomb is his sister. Erin Moriarty: Did either one of you ever worry about Chris? Ashli Holcomb: No. Sharon Costanza: No. Ashli Holcomb: Chris is a stay home person, that literally would just work in his backyard. Chris Smith’s beagle/terrier mix, Tiki, stayed by his side after the shooting, providing her owner with much needed warmth. / Credit: Chris Smith Smith lived with a dog named Tiki. An EMT told the family that Tiki may have helped Smith make it through the night by huddling with him for the roughly 12 hours that he was bleeding before being rescued. Sharon Costanza: I think Tiki protected Chris … I think she probably laid right next to him … Smith’s close-knit family could not imagine anyone wanting to kill him. Ashli Holcomb: It was like, no way. How? Why? Sharon Costanza: Who? Yeah. Who would’ve done that? Leslie Reeves, a divorced mother of two, tried to help women in abusive relationships, but friends say she had her own troubles / Credit: Howard Bolton Investigators had the same questions about Reeves and learned that she was a divorced mother of two children who lived in Troy, about an hour south of Farmersville. Although Reeves had a master’s degree in engineering, she chose instead to teach Pilates and to promote self-defense classes for women. Reeves posted a video to her YouTube channel to advertise one of her classes: … empower yourself against aggression and assault as we teach you easy to learn self-defense techniques…. Power up!! Reeves tried to help women in abusive relationships, but friends say she had her own troubles. Stuiber told deputies she was worried about a former boyfriend, a contractor by the name of Robert Tarr, known as Bobby. Nanette Stuiber: She said … I am going to completely block Bobby from email, texts, phone calls. I — I have to go no contact. Later that evening, news of Reeves’ ******* began circulating and reached another close friend, Amy Steinhauer. She had met Tarr, a divorced father of three, and did not have a good impression of him, but — Amy Steinhauer: You never see someone and think that — they can kill my friend. Steinhauer called the Sheriff’s Office that night to give them Tarr’s name. By then, detectives had already set out to find Bobby Tarr while, 85 miles to the north, surgeons were fighting to try to save the life of Chris Smith — a bullet still lodged in his brain. PIECING TOGETHER WHAT HAPPENED After learning that Smith had been shot in the head, his family rushed to the hospital in Springfield, Illinois, two hours from their home. Sharon Costanza : I was on the phone … to everyone I could think of … ’cause I just needed prayers from everybody. Chris Smith and his mother, Sharon Costanza. / Credit: Ashli Holcomb Doctors removed part of Smith’s skull and some bullet fragments in his brain before putting him in a medically induced coma. His family, struggling to piece together what had happened, learned that he had been out with a woman named Leslie Reeves. Erin Moriarty: Had you ever heard the name Leslie Reeves before? Ashli Holcomb: No. … I looked her up and then … I tried to reach out to her friends and then I found … her best friend, Nanette. Nanette Stuiber told them the same thing she had told investigators: she suspected Reeves’ ex-boyfriend Bobby Tarr. That night, sheriff’s deputies went to Tarr’s home in Collinsville, an hour south of the crime scene. Authorities say he never asked why they wanted to talk to him, and he agreed to go to the police station without a lawyer. Though her friends said the couple had broken up, Tarr told investigators that he and Reeves were still together. DET. ******: Do you and Leslie have a lot of problems? BOBBY TARR: I wouldn’t say — no worse than any average couple. It was Reeves that detectives wanted to talk about. DET. ******: I want you to — to dig down deep here, be as honest with me as you can. OK. Uh, Leslie, is dead. BOBBY TARR: What? DET. ******: … Can you help me shed some light on this? BOBBY TARR: How did she die? DET. ******: She was murdered … BOBBY TARR: What happened? DET. ******: That’s why we’re here with you. … You help me believe that you’re not involved in this. BOBBY TARR: I’m not involved in anything … Investigators asked Tarr about Farmersville, the scene of the crime. DET. ******: Uh, know where Farmersville, Illinois is? BOBBY TARR: Farmersville. No, I can’t say that I do. … Never been there. … I’ve never heard of it. And they asked Tarr where he had been the night before Thanksgiving. BOBBY TARR: I went to a buddy of mine’s house. He left and left me some money out of his shop and go pick it up. The friend lived a short distance from Tarr’s home. DET. ******: OK. Do you remember what time you came back? BOBBY TARR: Um, yeah, it wasn’t that long. Um, maybe 6:30-ish, something like that. Bobby Tarr being questioned by detectives. / Credit: Montgomery County State’s Attorney’s Office Investigators believe the shooting took place sometime early on Thanksgiving morning, after 1 a.m. Tarr said after he got back, he was home all night.BOBBY TARR: You can talk to my daughter about me being home. That’s exactly what they did. Detectives brought Tarr’s 17-year-old daughter Shelby to a different room at the police station. And she told them that her father actually left home twice that night. DET. TYSON HOLSHOUSER: So the first time he left was roughly 6:30? SHELBY TARR: Right. DET. TYSON HOLSHOUSER: And then he — he came home about a half hour later – SHELBY TARR: Right. DET. TYSON HOLSHOUSER: and he said he had to go back? SHELBY TARR: Right. DET. TYSON HOLSHOUSER: And then it was 9:15-ish when he got back home … SHELBY TARR: Yeah. Shelby said he had been gone for more than two hours, and when he got home, he was upset. SHELBY TARR: He gets home, he was crying. He was sobbing. … He said he missed Leslie. Shelby said she went sleep around 9:30 p.m. and was awakened by her father around 2:45 a.m. SHELBY TARR: He started laundry, he was pacing, walking around … And he was like, I can’t sleep. Detectives went back to Tarr and told him Shelby’s story didn’t match his. Tarr then changed his story and said he had gone to his friend’s house twice, but still insisted he was home by 8 p.m. As Tarr sat at the police station, detectives searched his house and found his phone and a Glock pistol. Shelby had told them her father had a different gun, but they did not find it. SHELBY TARR: It’s little, it’s like this big. … Not like a light green, but like a — the Army green. Shelby told investigators she had seen it the day before Thanksgiving – in her father’s sock drawer. SHELBY TARR: Yesterday morning, actually, I went to get socks and it was there. And now it’s not there. DET. TYSON HOLSHOUSER: Was there yesterday, gone today? SHELBY TARR: Yeah. Bobby Tarr sat at the police station overnight while authorities continued to investigate. They had already learned his car had been captured by license plate reader cameras just after midnight the night of the shooting. The cameras were near a gas station, and investigators discovered that Tarr had bought gas there just after midnight. Back at the police station, they confronted him with the gas station receipt. DETECTIVE. #2: So you’re a liar. BOBBY TARR: ‘Cause I don’t remember doing that? DET. ******: You don’t remember being out after midnight when you have told us you are 100% positive. Erin Moriarty (showing Affrunti a map on an iPad): The gas station is here in Troy. Andrew Affrunti: Yes. Erin Moriarty: And the ******* occurred here in Farmersville. Andrew Affrunti: Correct. The gas station was near Tarr’s home, an hour from the crime scene. Andrew Affrunti is the Montgomery County State’s Attorney. Erin Moriarty: So, why is it significant? … So, he went out and got some gas? Andrew Affrunti: It was significant to us because why would he lie about it? BOBBY TARR (police questioning): So I got fuel. What does that prove? Investigators believed it was proof Tarr was lying about his whereabouts that night. They placed him under arrest. Affrunti says they arrested Tarr immediately because they feared Smith’s life was in danger, and they hadn’t found the ******* weapon. Andrew Affrunti: If he was out of custody, could he take further steps to dispose of the evidence? Just one day after Leslie Reeves was killed and Chris Smith was left fighting for his life, investigators believed they had the man responsible in custody. But in his only media interview, Tarr tells “48 Hours” they got the wrong guy. Bobby Tarr: There is so many things untold … that will prove my innocence. SUSPECT PLACES HIMSELF AT THE CRIME SCENE Bobby Tarr, charged with the ******* of Leslie Reeves and the attempted ******* of Chris Smith, is nothing if not unflappable. Erin Moriarty: Did you kill Leslie Reeves? Bobby Tarr: No. Erin Moriarty: Did you shoot … Chris Smith? Bobby Tarr: No. He kept his cool — even when confronted with a litany of lies he told investigators. Erin Moriarty: You told the police you only left the house once. Bobby Tarr: Mm. Erin Moriarty: That wasn’t true. Bobby Tarr: Correct. Erin Moriarty: You told the police you had no idea where Farmersville is. Bobby Tarr: Mm-hmm. Erin Moriarty: That was a lie. Bobby Tarr: Mm-hmm. Erin Moriarty: You lied about getting gas in your car that night. Bobby Tarr: Mm-hmm. When he spoke with “48 Hours,” Tarr admitted he was at Smith’s house the night before Thanksgiving, placing himself at the scene of the crime. He says the night began when he met Reeves at her part-time job at a Loft store. Bobby Tarr: She had said she was gonna go meet some friends because one of their friends … was playing in a band … And she asked me if I wanted to go. And I said, well, you know, I would go but I have my youngest daughter staying with me for a week. Tarr says that when he declined the invitation, Reeves asked if he would follow her to Farmersville, because her van was unreliable. And so he did. That makes no sense to Reeves’ friend Amy Steinhauer. Amy Steinhauer: She was terrified of him, rightfully so. Just a few weeks earlier, Steinhauer says, Reeves told her that Tarr had shown up while she was on a first date with a different guy. After that incident, Reeves told Steinhauer she was frightened by Tarr and texted Steinhauer: “I could be killed by him someday if I don’t cut all contact.” Erin Moriarty: So, you’re telling me now that this woman who was scared of you, who had actually texted a friend that she thought you might kill her, asked you to follow her to another man’s house? Bobby Tarr: Mm-hmm. Erin Moriarty: Does that make sense Bobby? Bobby Tarr: No, I understand. Um, so I don’t understand that text in general. Erin Moriarty: Why did she think you might kill her? Bobby Tarr: I don’t know. I’ve got no clue. Tarr says Reeves lied to her friends about their relationship. He insists she asked him to follow her north to Farmersville. Bobby Tarr: So, I went with her up there … I think we arrived there around 7:30. I parked — parked in front of her van, in front of his house. … That’s as far as I went. … I left; I never went back to Farmersville again. If he had an innocent explanation for why he was in Farmersville, why did he lie to detectives? Bobby Tarr: My daughter … her and Leslie, there was a little bit of tension between both of them. …I did not want her to know that I was going to meet Leslie that night. Friends say Leslie Reeves was scared of ex-boyfriend Bobby Tarr. / Credit: Amy Steinhauer Tarr claims that after he lied to his daughter Shelby about seeing Reeves, he stuck to that lie at the police station because he was afraid they would tell her. And he never corrected those lies, even when detectives arrested him. Erin Moriarty: Why not just say, ‘look, between you and me … I lied to my daughter. So let me tell you the truth, but let’s just not share that with her.’ Why wouldn’t you do that? Bobby Tarr: I should have done that. Tarr is quick to point out the lack of physical evidence connecting him to the bloody crime scene. Investigators searched his white Jetta but did not find any shards of glass or blood stains. Bobby Tarr: Two … tests by the state police were done on my car. Zero blood found in my car. … There’s zero DNA of mine at the crime scene. Anything from the crime scene, in my car or on me or any of my clothing or my shoes, zero. Prosecutor Affrunti has to concede that point. Erin Moriarty: Was any of Tarr’s DNA found inside the house? Andrew Affrunti: No. Erin Moriarty: Were any of his fingerprints found inside the house? Andrew Affrunti: No. And authorities still had not found the ******* weapon. But a week after the shooting, they got a phone call from Tarr’s friend Billy Adams. Adams said Tarr had called him from jail. That call was recorded. BOBBY TARR (jail call): What’s your day look like? ‘Cause I need 10 minutes of your time. Tarr asked Adams to go to his house and look for some deck brackets. BOBBY TARR (jail call): I got some special aluminum brackets and — that I need you to get because they’re for another job that I didn’t tell Dad about yet. … So don’t say nothing to him. Instead, Adams contacted the sheriff’s office. Deputies suspected Tarr knew the phone call was being recorded and was speaking to his friend in code –- about something other than deck brackets. BILLY ADAMS (jail call): They’re aluminum? BOBBY TARR: Yeah, get ’em and get rid of ’em. Bobby Tarr: They thought that was suspicious which was why they went over and searched. Investigators were on their hands and knees in Tarr’s yard, looking for a gun. Dan Fultz is Tarr’s defense attorney. Dan Fultz: They searched that area thoroughly. … No gun. You know what they did find? Deck brackets. A few days later they got another phone call. This time from Tarr’s brother, asking them to come back to the house. Tarr’s family gave deputies a Ziploc bag they said they had found in the same yard that had been searched just days earlier. Inside — a Springfield Hellcat 9 mm pistol and silver-colored ammunition. The Illinois State Police determined the gun was the ******* weapon and the ammunition matched the casings found at the crime scene. Bobby Tarr: We still, to this day, don’t know how that ended up there, specifically in the spot that they searched … Erin Moriarty: Are you saying you were set up? Someone was framing you? Bobby Tarr: Yes. But if someone was framing Tarr, he or she would have to be pretty detail oriented. The state police say Tarr’s fingerprint was on the Ziploc bag. Dan Fultz: He is adamant that he would not have been dumb enough … that he would’ve carried it all the way back to his home … and said, hmm, where would I put this gun on my one-acre lot? … I think I’ll put it next to the front door. And Tarr points out neither his prints nor DNA were found on the gun itself. Bobby Tarr Nothing on the firearm, no DNA, no prints of mine on the firearm. Andrew Affrunti: What I think is, what happened is, is that the gun was cleaned. And that Mr. Tarr just missed a spot. That spot was Reeves’ DNA, say police, found on the guide rod of the gun. Tarr’s explanation: the gun wasn’t his – it belonged to Reeves. Bobby Tarr: I purchased the Hellcat and Leslie purchased it from me. As investigators continued to build a case against Bobby Tarr, they say he was hatching a plan to silence the only eyewitness. COULD CHRIS SMITH ID HIS ATTACKER? If there’s anyone who knew what guns Leslie Reeves owned, it’s Howard Bolton, her close friend and firearm instructor. Howard Bolton (at gun range): Leslie accompanied me here on several occasions. … When I would hold classes, she would actually shoot with us. Howard Bolton (at gun range): Leslie was becoming a very good shot. Leslie Reeves, who had a master’s degree in engineering, chose instead to teach Pilates and to promote self-defense classes for women. / Credit: Bethany Smith Stephan Bolton says Reeves had organized a class called “Girls with Guns” not long before she was murdered. Howard Bolton (at gun range): We put the girls through their paces … They would move forward and fire. They would come back and fire …And Leslie did very, very well at that. Bobby Tarr insisted to “48 Hours” that Reeves owned the Hellcat that was used to kill her, but Howard says he never saw her use it. Howard Bolton: Leslie never brought, uh, a Springfield … let alone a Hellcat — to class. So then how did Reeves’ DNA get on the guide rod of the ******* weapon? Howard believes that Reeves’ DNA could only be on that guide rod if the gun was fired at her at close range. Howard Bolton: So when he shot her, wherever it was he shot her … would have contaminated that part of the gun. In fact, Howard says Reeves owned a different gun. Her friends say they wish she had taken it with her the night she was killed. Howard Bolton(at gun range): Had Leslie taken the gun with her, I assure you the outcome would’ve been different. Tarr declared his innocence but the case against him could hinge on what Chris Smith — the only survivor — remembers. Would he be able to identify him? That was the question as Smith remained in a coma. Sharon Costanza: We were talking to him, singing to him … And I was … always holding his hand. While Chris Smith lay helpless, authorities say Tarr was plotting to silence him forever. A grand jury indicted Tarr on two counts of solicitation of *******. Those charges are based on allegations by an inmate who says Tarr paid him $10,000 to shoot and kill the lead detective and Smith. Erin Moriarty: Did you ask an inmate to shoot Chris Smith — Bobby Tarr: No, ma’am. Erin Moriarty:— and to kill Detective ******? Bobby Tarr: No, ma’am. Tarr says the alleged plot was a lie concocted by a former cellmate. Tarr says he loaned that cellmate $10,000 for his bond and that it had nothing to do with Smith. Erin Moriarty: Were you worried he was going to testify and point to you as the shooter? Bobby Tarr: No. … I was not worried one iota. The truth was that no one knew what Chris Smith remembered. The first time he regained consciousness was in early January 2022, about two months after the shooting. Smith’s voice was so weak in those early days, that his old friend Mark Reardon, a talk show host in St. Louis, barely recognized Chris on the phone. Mark Reardon: I could not believe that I was hearing from this guy. And I cried, he cried … just talking about that moment really brings me chills because I just thought he was never gonna be someone that was in my life ever again. Erin Moriarty: What did Chris tell you? Mark Reardon: Well … when Chris came out of this … I was pretty sensitive to ask him about what had happened that night … because I think I was a little afraid of even having those conversations. So … most of the conversations that we had were really focused on, hey, how are you? you gonna be OK. After intense physical therapy, Smith has made incredible strides. He’s much stronger than when he awoke from a coma, but he discovered there are gaps in his memory. What does he remember from that terrible night? Chris Smith: I wish to God I could remember something … even just a — a smidgen of something. But I remember nothing. He remembers nothing of the shooting or Leslie Reeves. Chris Smith: I said, “who the heck’s Leslie? … I don’t know Leslie.” Erin Moriarty: You had no idea. Chris Smith: No. Nothing, nothing. Erin Moriarty: Is Chris the same person who used to come on your show before he was shot? Mark Reardon: Yeah … I think at the core, he’s still the same guy that I knew. … He’s still the smart ****, he’s still the guy that’s gonna talk about how good he is, and how good he was, and how much he could lift weights. Chris Smith, who had three strokes in the hospital and was put into a medically induced coma, has been recovering since the shooting and making incredible progress / Credit: CBS News Smith works out at the gym most mornings trying to regain muscle so that someday he’ll be able to walk without assistance. PHOTOS: Shooting survivor defies the odds after taking bullet to the brain He’s even back to being the lead singer in his rock and roll band. Sharon Costanza: I don’t know how he did make it. I don’t understand how he did. He’s a miracle. But Smith is aware that his life is very different from what it once was. Chris Smith: I’m half the man I used to be, but I’m trying to get it back as hard as I can. Chris Smith: My left leg is, uh, partially paralyzed from my hip to my knee, then from my knee to my toes, completely paralyzed, so if there’s any neurosurgeons out there … any researchers out there, please get a hold of me. I’ll be your guinea pig. Just make me normal and give my life back please (crying). Erin Moriarty: It’s tough, isn’t it, Chris? Chris Smith: Tough doesn’t even describe it. Doesn’t even describe it. Smith is resigned to living with part of that hollow-point bullet in his brain; doctors say it’s in a spot that makes it too dangerous to remove. Erin Moriarty: So that’s where you got shot? Chris Smith (points to the top of his head where bullet went in): Yep. Right here … yeah, still feel it on my skull right there. After decades on his own, Smith had to move back into his mother’s house. Sharon Costanza: I thank my blessings daily that he’s here with us. I just wish that this guy didn’t take everything away from him. Chris Smith has been unable to care for Tiki himself as he recovers, but she lives nearby, and they see each other often. / Credit: CBS News Smith visits with his loyal dog Tiki, but no longer lives with her. And he’d love to see his 12-year-old daughter more often, but he can’t drive and he’s living in St. Louis almost two hours away from his daughter and ex-wife. Chris Smith: I miss her … I — I mean, she was my little pea in a pod. I mean, we did everything together. The trial of Robert Tarr was set for April 2024, but Smith would not be there. He told the prosecutor he was too angry to attend. Erin Moriarty: You didn’t think you’d be able to just sit there? Chris Smith: Oh no. No way. I — I know myself. … I — there’s no way. No. But Smith’s alleged shooter Bobby Tarr will be there and he said he was eager to tell the jury that he’s not a violent man. Erin Moriarty: But on this one night, early morning, did you snap? Bobby Tarr: No, that’s not my nature. I don’t lose it and snap. THE CASE AGAINST BOBBY TARR When Bobby Tarr went on trial in April 2024, prosecutors told the jury that he killed Leslie Reeves rather than allow her to live the life she wanted; a life without him. Andrew Affrunti: Mr. Tarr … couldn’t deal with the fact that Leslie was seeing somebody else and … he had to go and take care of it. Andrew Affrunti says Tarr secretly followed Reeves to Farmersville early that evening, and shortly afterwards his phone began showing some interesting activity. Andrew Affrunti: He had actually searched Chris Smith on his phone, had tried to find his Facebook profile. Tarr headed home and texted his friend Billy Adams, “I don’t feel like she would drive that far for a party or go out with a girlfriend. I think it’s for a dude.” He also searched whether police could track his phone if he was using a VPN – a virtual private network. Andrew Affrunti: He was researching to determine whether or not that would mask where his location was while he was using the phone. Authorities say around midnight, Tarr left home, stopping at that gas station. And then, according to Affrunti, surveillance videos and cell tower records show that Tarr drove back to Farmersville. Erin Moriarty: You believe he intended to kill both Chris and Leslie? Andrew Affrunti: I 100% believe that he went up there with the intent to do serious harm to both of them. With one victim dead and the other with no memory, it’s difficult to say with certainty what happened. But the prosecution argued that sometime after 1 a.m., Tarr tried to enter through the back door of Smith’s house. Reeves and Smith tried to keep him out. Josh Easton: There was some kind of altercation or struggle …And that’s when the glass was broken. Crime scene investigator Josh Easton told the jury what he’d observed inside the kitchen. Josh Easton: The refrigerator was pulled away from the wall from where it appeared it normally was. Prosecutors believe Reeves was trying to use the refrigerator to block the door. And based on where Smith was shot in his head, they think he was crouching down to help Reeves. Andrew Affrunti: I think that … while Chris was crouched down trying to hold the door shut, uh, Bobby shot through the door and struck Chris. With Smith incapacitated, Affrunti says Reeves hid in the living room. Tarr tracked her down, shot and killed her. Andrew Affrunti: I strongly believe that … he walked in and executed her. Defense attorney Dan Fultz disputes all of that. Dan Fultz: There is simply no evidence … that that’s what happened. There’s no evidence that Leslie pushed the refrigerator. There’s no fingerprints and blood … on the refrigerator of Leslie’s. Fultz says evidence of a fight in the kitchen tells a different story. Dan Fultz: The amount of blood in that kitchen was astonishing. Erin Moriarty: From looking at that crime scene, do you believe that Christopher Smith had to fight his — his assailant … in the kitchen? Dan Fultz: It would appear to me that there was … some significant struggle in that kitchen between him and someone else. And he says the assailant could not have been Tarr because he would have been covered in blood. Dan Fultz: They did not identify a single piece of DNA in his car, they didn’t identify a bloody fingerprint, they did not identify anything tying him to that crime scene. But prosecutors argued the house wasn’t bloody when Tarr left. They said Chris bled heavily in the 12 hours it took for help to arrive. And while the prosecution did not have a lot of forensic evidence linking Tarr to the crime scene, Affrunti says his phone activity, his lies to investigators, and the evidence found on the Hellcat all prove his guilt. Andrew Affrunti: When you put all of that together, that’s when you get the clear picture of what happened. When it was the defense’s turn, Tarr says he wanted to tell his story to the jury. But he chose not to testify. Erin Moriarty: Why didn’t you just decide you were gonna talk to the jury and tell this story, if in fact you have a story to tell? Bobby Tarr: I should have, I very well should have. Dan Fultz: We made a strategic decision … because it may have opened the door for a whole lot of other more damaging evidence to be used, to cross examine him. The defense didn’t put on any witnesses and counted on the jury to find reasonable doubt in the lack of physical evidence. After three hours, the jury found Bobby Tarr guilty of first-degree ******* and attempted *******. Chris Smith did not attend the trial, but did speak at Bobby Tarr’s sentencing hearing. / Credit: CBS News Two months later, Tarr was back in court for sentencing, and this time, so was Smith — to tell the judge how the shooting impacted him and his family. Cameras were not allowed in the courtroom. Chris Smith (after sentencing) Lost my house, lost my truck … I mean, I’ve literally lost my life without being killed. While Smith was in a coma, he says looters descended on his house and stole his guitar and amps, even his above ground pool. Later, his house was sold at auction and then razed. All that’s left is an empty lot. Tarr also spoke at his sentencing and denied shooting Reeves and Smith. The judge sentenced him to 85 years. Leslie Reeves’ friends are focused on keeping her memory alive. Amy Steinhauer: I hope the rest of his time on this earth is hell. Howard Bolton: She was a light of a lot of people’s lives. … She was always smiling. She was a very good mother, lived for her kids … And was an advocate and champion of women — women’s rights and especially women that were abused. Nanette Stuiber: If it can happen to her, it could happen to anyone. So we all need to be careful. Smith says he never expected he’d be a victim of domestic violence and cautions other men to take a hard look at their behavior. Chris Smith: If guys you feel like that, if you wanna hurt a woman, get help. While Smith mourns his old life, he is writing a book about his experiences, and says he’s working to make what he calls poor man’s margaritas out of the lemons and limes he’s been handed. Chris Smith: I’ve got a do-over. Good Lord gimme a do-over. Not many people get a second chance in life. Smith has found love with Michelle Albrecht. Chris Smith: She’s an angel. … Loving me and accepting me the way that I am. He proposed to her on stage. Erin Moriarty: What’s the most important lesson out of all of this? Chris Smith: Don’t ever give up on anything ever, ever… No matter how bad things are. Don’t ever give up. Leslie Reeves’ two children are being raised by their father. The solicitation of ******* charges against Bobby Tarr have been dismissed. 24. Someone Asks, Why Do People Still Equate Luxury Cars With Being Rich When ‘It’s Common Knowledge Anyone Can Finance Or Lease A Luxury Car’ Someone Asks, Why Do People Still Equate Luxury Cars With Being Rich When ‘It’s Common Knowledge Anyone Can Finance Or Lease A Luxury Car’ A viral Reddit post in the r/MiddleClassFinance community recently sparked a passionate discussion about luxury cars and what they really say about someone’s finances. The original post reads: “How are there still so many people who think that driving an expensive car means you’re rich these days? It’s common knowledge that anyone can finance or lease a luxury car, yet many still see it as a symbol of success.” Don’t Miss: One of the most repeated sentiments: owning a luxury car doesn’t automatically mean you’re wealthy. Many commenters pointed out that leasing or financing a high-end vehicle is accessible to many, regardless of their actual financial stability. “I drive a BMW and I’m not rich nor bankrupt,” one user wrote. “It’s not hard to prioritize something that makes you happy.” Another chimed in: “People spending 80-100k on a truck nowadays is mind-blowing.” Several people shared personal stories about coworkers or friends who drive flashy cars while living paycheck to paycheck or renting apartments. Just because a bank says they’ll finance you doesn’t mean it’s a good idea. Trending: Maker of the $60,000 foldable home has 3 factory buildings, 600+ houses built, and big plans to solve housing — this is your last chance to become an investor for $0.80 per share. On the flip side, others emphasized that many wealthy people purposely avoid looking rich. “We have two paid-off Hondas, buy our kids’ clothes at consignment sales, use our local buy-nothing group, and have a (much) higher net worth than everyone we know,” one user shared. Another pointed out: “Costco clothes are for both rich and poor. I call it the final destination of fashion.” And one popular quote summed it up: “Money talks; wealth whispers.” Plenty of users agreed that it often comes down to personal values. Some love nice cars and are willing to sacrifice elsewhere in their budget. Others simply want reliable transportation and prefer to invest their money. “I wear Costco clothes but drive high-end cars because I have been obsessed with cars since I was a kid,” one Redditor explained. “The only one I’m trying to impress is myself.” Trending: Maximize saving for your retirement and cut down on taxes: Schedule your free call with a financial advisor to start your financial journey – no cost, no obligation. Another person, a lawyer married to a physician, said: “I could never finance a luxury vehicle. It’s not a question of being able to afford it.” Story Continues Many pointed fingers at debt culture and the influence of social media and influencer lifestyles. “EVERYONE I knew [in Miami] drove a leased base model BMW/Mercedes/Lexus that they parked at their parents’ houses where they still lived in their childhood bedrooms with $10 in their bank accounts,” one commenter wrote. “I have a $2,425 car payment,” said another. “I make $170,000 a year… and the car makes me feel like a million bucks every time I drive it.” Adding, “I already own a million-dollar home with $600,000 equity, so what the hell else am I going to spend my money on?” See Also: Invest where it hurts — and help millions heal: Invest in Cytonics and help disrupt a $390B Big Pharma stronghold. A cited stat from 2019 said the average household income of a new BMW 7-Series buyer was $184,170. Reactions were mixed. Some said that income could justify the purchase; others argued that even at that level, dropping $100,000 on a depreciating asset is a bad financial move. “$184k is more than ‘decent money.’ Not $100k car money, but it’s more than triple the median income,” a user noted. In the end, the debate circled back to a central idea: what someone drives or wears doesn’t always reflect their net worth. Sometimes it shows what they prioritize. Other times, it might just be debt in disguise. Read Next: ‘Scrolling To UBI’ — Deloitte’s #1 fastest-growing software company allows users to earn money on their phones.
