  1. Sun Unleash a 600,000-Mile Filament in Fiery Eruption Sun Unleash a 600,000-Mile Filament in Fiery Eruption A stunning solar eruption captured on video on the night of May 12-13 has revealed a 600,000-mile-long filament blasting away from the sun’s northern hemisphere. The outburst occurred around 8 p.m. EDT (0000 GMT) and spanned a distance more than twice that between Earth and the moon. A massive solar filament suspended above the sun’s surface became unstable and erupted, blasting a CME into space along with a cloud of plasma and magnetic energy. Preliminary models show Earth is nowhere in the firing range of this fiery ejection, but researchers are still watching the phenomenon closely. Sun’s 600,000-Mile-Long ‘Angel-Wing’ Eruption Stuns Skywatchers, Signals Rising Solar Activity As per the Space.com report, the eruption originated from a filament structure composed of dense, cooler solar plasma held aloft by magnetic fields. These structures often appear as dark ribbons across the sun’s disk and can become unstable without warning. Solar observers noted that this latest eruption dwarfed similar recent events, both in scale and intensity. Aurora chaser Jure Atanackov remarked that the CME from the blast was among the most spectacular seen this year, although fortunately, it is headed north and will miss Earth. The event, dubbed the “angel-wing” or “bird-wing” eruption by observers online, was widely shared among solar watchers. Vincent Ledvina, another aurora chaser, noted its incredible visual impact, describing it as a sight worth watching on loop. The eruption is, in fact, so long, by more than a million kilometres, that it is of scientific interest and visually striking as well. Geomagnetic storms resulting from this kind of CME can affect satellites, communication systems, and even Earth. Although it foreshadows the unpredictable nature of our host star, this particular CME does not pose a threat to Earth at the moment. Solar activity is ramping up as we approach the peak of Solar Cycle 25 in 2025. What’s more, more — and maybe more Earth-threatening — solar explosions could follow. As a reminder of the formidable and delicate forces at play relatively close by on Earth, the sun remains a source of wonder for astronomers and skywatchers alike. 2. Asus debuts 24-inch 610 Hz Full HD gaming monitor with a Super TN panel Asus debuts 24-inch 610 Hz Full HD gaming monitor with a Super TN panel If you thought Acer’s 600 Hz gaming monitor was fast, you haven’t seen anything yet. In what is increasingly becoming a game of one-upmanship among monitor manufacturers, ever-higher refresh rates seem to be the newest trend. Asus is looking to take the crown, for now, with the ROG Strix Ace XG248QSG. The ROG Strix Ace XG248QSG technically has a 600 Hz native refresh rate, but it is user-configurable to a 610 Hz overclock for absolute bragging rights. While most of the 500 Hz+ gaming monitors introduced in the past two years have utilized an IPS display, and more recently, QD-OLED, the ROG Strix Ace XG248QSG uses a 24.1-inch Super TN panel with a 1920 x 1080p (Full HD) resolution. TN panels are known for their incredible speed, but they tend to lag behind IPS, VA, and OLED panels in viewing angles and color reproduction. Asus acknowledges these downsides and says that its Super TN panel technology helps to enhance color output and brightness (370 nits maximum), while delivering 90 percent DCI-P3 coverage. (Image credit: Asus) As you would expect, the ROG Strix Ace XG248QSG supports AMD FreeSync Premium and Nvidia G-Sync. Asus also touts a 0.1 ms response time and carefully points out that it has prioritized tackling input lag. In an effort to improve overall system response, which is crucial to maintaining a competitive edge in eSports gaming, the ROG Strix Ace XG248QSG uses GameFast Technology to reduce input lag to just 0.8 ms. If that wasn’t enough, you’ll find Extreme Low Motion Blue 2 (ELMB 2) technology combined with a dual backlight design to reduce motion blur. You may like Although we typically associate ROG products with brash styling and RGB design flourishes, the ROG Strix Ace XG248QSG has a relatively low-key design. The monitor is all-******, and there are no RGBs that you can configure to sync with your rig. If you’re not into that kind of superfluous touch when you’re trying to bust a cap into an opponent, it’s likely a minor omission. However, the monitor is adjustable for height (0 to 160 mm), swivel (+/- 45 degrees), and tilt (+35 to -5 degrees). Regarding connectivity, you get two HDMI 2.1 ports, one DisplayPort 1.4 port, a headphone jack, and a USB-C port. However, don’t get too excited about the USB-C port; it’s only there for performing firmware updates. At this time, pricing and availability for the ROG Strix Ace XG248QSG haven’t been announced. 5. New Study Sets Stronger Mass Limit on Ultralight Bosonic Dark Matter New Study Sets Stronger Mass Limit on Ultralight Bosonic Dark Matter Over 80 years, dark matter has been a great mystery for the researchers. Elusive of direct observation, it has made its existence known only by the gravitational impacts it makes on cosmic structures. Even though there is a lot of indirect evidence of its existence, the real nature of dark matter is still unknown. An important attribute of its particle is mass. While past studies have constrained the mass of fermionic dark matter using quantum principles like Pauli’s exclusion principle, bosonic dark matter remained less constrained. In a recent study, scientists have estimated a new lower bound on the mass of ultra-lightweight bosonic dark matter particles. About the study According to the study published in Physical Review Letters, the mass of ultralight bosonic dark matter must be more than 2 × 10-21 electron volts (eV), 100 times more than previous estimates using Heisenberg’s uncertainty principle. The team of researchers, led by the first author of the study, Tim Zimmermann, a Ph.D. candidate at the Institute of Theoretical Astrophysics, University of Oslo, focused their method on the data of Leo II, the Milky Way’s satellite galaxy. It is a dwarf galaxy 1,000 times smaller than the Milky Way. By analyzing the internal motions of stars within Leo II—heavily influenced by dark matter—the team derived 5,000 possible dark matter density profiles using a tool called GRAVSPHERE. They compared these with profiles generated by quantum wave functions of various dark matter particle masses. If the particle is too light, quantum fuzziness spreads it too thinly, preventing it from forming the observed structures. The study concluded that the dark matter particle must have a mass greater than 2.2 × 10⁻²¹ electron volts (eV)—over 100 times more than previous lower estimates. Impact on dark matter studies The findings have significant implications for popular ultralight dark matter models, particularly fuzzy dark matter, which typically proposes particles with masses around 10-22 ev. Looking ahead, the team plans to extend their methodology to mixed dark matter scenarios, where dark matter is composed of particles with different masses. 6. Addition of new AI capabilities shows Starburst’s growth Addition of new AI capabilities shows Starburst’s growth Starburst on Monday unveiled a swath of new capabilities, including AI Workflows and AI Agent, which demonstrate the vendor’s growth beyond being a data lakehouse specialist. Built on the Trino query engine, Starburst’s platform — Galaxy for cloud-based customers and Enterprise for on-premises deployments — is commonly used as the connective tissue for the data mesh method of managing data. Over the past few years, Starburst has broadened its offerings to become a more full-featured data management vendor by including a data catalog to foster data discovery, a governance layer, data transformation and streaming data capabilities, and even self-service analytics tools. Now, Starburst is making AI a focal point, introducing both a secure environment for customers to develop AI applications as well as its own AI capabilities aimed at simplifying and speeding data management and analysis. AI development, which includes applying powerful models to proprietary data, is a high-risk/high-reward proposition, according to Kevin Petrie, an analyst at BARC U.S. Given that Starburst is addressing the risks with its new capabilities while enabling the reward, the vendor’s news tools are significant for users. “Starburst addresses the biggest risks, including data access, data quality, privacy, incompatible systems and complex architectures,” Petrie said. “Their new product features, assuming they reach full availability soon, reflect a mature approach to the market.” Based in Boston, Starburst is a data management vendor whose lakehouse platform combines the structured data storage capabilities of data warehouses with the unstructured data storage capabilities of data lakes. Vendors providing similar capabilities include Databricks, Dremio and IBM, which in 2023 acquired Presto-based Ahana. Branching out Given the potential for generative AI (GenAI) to make workers better informed and more efficient, many enterprises have increased their investments in AI development since OpenAI’s November 2022 launch of ChatGPT represented a significant improvement in GenAI technology. Simultaneously, with data providing the intelligence aspect of AI, many data management vendors have expanded beyond their historical focus to build environments within their platforms that make it easier and more secure for customers to develop and deploy AI applications. Rivals Databricks and Snowflake have been among the most aggressive developers of environments for building AI tools, while others, including Alation and Informatica — among many others — have also made enabling AI development a priority. Now, Starburst is joining the fray with the unveiling of AI Workflows, a set of tools in private preview designed to enable customers to develop, deploy and manage AI models and applications. The suite includes AI Search to transform unstructured data to vector embeddings in Apache Iceberg, AI SQL Functions to train GenAI models using SQL, and AI Model Access Management to govern AI models and applications. In addition, given the native connectivity between AI Workflows and Starburst’s lakehouse, the development environment does not require users to move data or build complex pipelines. Beyond AI Workflows, Starburst is adding new AI capabilities of its own with AI Agent. The vendor previously launched natural language processing capabilities that enable users to analyze data without writing code. Now, it is adding a prebuilt conversational interface — currently in private preview — that can be deployed by analysts or autonomous agents and aims to simplify product documentation and insight generation. “These AI Workflows and Agents … build on Starburst’s core strength of accessing data on premises or in cloud environments,” Petrie said. In particular, transforming unstructured data into vector embeddings to prepare it for retrieval-augmented generation is a valuable addition, he continued. “That’s a key requirement of GenAI models,” Petrie said. Customer feedback provided the impetus for developing both AI Workflows and AI Agent, according to Matt Fuller, co-founder of Starburst and the vendor’s vice president of AI/ML products. Beyond the new AI capabilities, Starburst introduced the following: Starburst Data Catalog, a metadata-based hub for indexing and governing data that replaces the Hive Metastore in Starburst Enterprise. Auto-Tagging, a feature that uses large language models to detect and classify sensitive information at the column level. Fully managed Iceberg pipelines in Starburst Galaxy that include built-in maintenance features such as file compaction and options for streaming ingest and batch-style loading. Automated Table Maintenance of Iceberg workloads to reduce storage costs and improve query performance. Automatic Query Routing in Starburst Galaxy that routes queries to the correct cluster to improve query performance. A services offering that provides users with blueprints for developing data infrastructures that enable AI-powered data management and analysis. The services offering and Auto-Tagging are generally available, while the other new features are in various stages of preview. Collectively, the new capabilities further Starburst’s goal of providing customers with fast, governed access to distributed data, according to Fuller. “These are not to chase checkboxes, but to streamline how enterprises activate their data across environments for analytics and AI,” he said. Starburst aims to compete with Databricks and Snowflake as it grows beyond being a lakehouse for data mesh deployments, Fuller continued, noting that Starburst provides an alternative to both with its focus on interoperability and open standards. Meanwhile, perhaps the highlight beyond the AI capabilities is the services component, according to Petrie. “Their new service offering addresses a critical pain for many organizations, [which is that] their data architectures are not ready to support AI models or applications,” he said. “Starburst can help them modernize without costly migrations.” Next steps In the long term, Starburst’s roadmap will continue to focus on AI, according to Fuller. With AI-powered agents that can act autonomously the latest trend, Starburst aims to ensure that customers have a data foundation that can support agentic AI applications. “Our roadmap centers on breaking down data silos and delivering the infrastructure needed to power these agents with governed, contextual insights from ingestion to insight,” Fuller said. Petrie, meanwhile, suggested that as Starburst evolves into AI development, it should do more to integrate data operations, development operations and model operations. “AI innovation centers on the integration of data, models and applications,” he said. “To support this integration, Starburst would do well to partner with more AI/ML model platforms and application-development frameworks.” Eric Avidon is a senior news writer for Informa TechTarget and a journalist with more than 25 years of experience. 8. 3 Dividend-Friendly Consumer Discretionary Stocks With Upside 3 Dividend-Friendly Consumer Discretionary Stocks With Upside Over the past month or so, the consumer discretionary sector has been one of the biggest beneficiaries of the overall recovery in U.S. stocks. After the April 21 close, the The Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR® Fund (NYSE:) was down around 19% in 2025. It was the worst-performing of the 11 SPDR S&P 500 sector ETFs at that point. As of the May 16 close, it was down only around 3%, barely outperforming healthcare. The consumer discretionary sector notched the largest gain of any sector on May 12, 5%, as markets reacted to the United States–China trade deal. This makes sense, and the reasoning is in the name. The products these companies sell are discretionary—things people want rather than what they need. The enactment of massive tariffs would raise prices, causing people to be able to spend less on what they want and prioritize what they need. Thus, the suspension of these tariffs is great news for the sector. However, the consumer discretionary sector offers little for investors motivated by income. But, there are pockets where investors can find strong sources of investment income in this recovering area of the stock market. 1. +5% Yield Makes Best Buy One of the Kings of Consumer Discretionary Income One of the biggest payers of dividends in the consumer discretionary sector is electronics store Best Buy Co Inc (NYSE:). As of the May 16 close, the stock has an indicated dividend yield of nearly 5.2%. That is around nine times higher than the just under 0.7% yield offered by XLY. Best Buy has recovered big time recently, up around 21% in the one-month ******* ended May 16. A recent price target update from analysts at D.A. Davidson signals that the share recovery may be far from over. The firm places a $95 price target on the stock, indicating upside of nearly 29% from the May 16 closing price. The analysts see favorable product cycles in the company’s computer and television offerings benefiting the stock. It will be interesting to see if tariffs impacted the company’s financial performance in Q1 when it reports on May 29. 2. Recent Gambles on Las Vegas Sands Are Paying Off, Analysts See More to Come Another solid dividend payer in consumer discretionary is Las Vegas Sands Corp (NYSE:). The stock has an indicated dividend yield of just under 2.4% as of the May 16 close. Over the past one-month *******, shares are up over 33%. The company operates large integrated resorts that include casinos and celebrity chefs. Despite its name, the company no longer operates in Las Vegas. It instead concentrates its operations in Macao and Singapore, which both rank in the top five richest countries in the world per capita. Despite the stock’s strong recent uptick, analysts continue to see upside in shares. Analyst price target updates tracked by MarketBeat since the company’s latest earnings release on April 23 indicate an average target of $52. This implies shares could rise another 23% from their May 16 closing price. 3. TPR: Above-Market Yield With Upside Remaining Last up is Tapestry Inc (NYSE:). The stock is up around 32% over the month ended May 16. Additionally, shares have provided a total return of around 100% over the past 52 weeks. Tapestry is a maker of luxury handbags and accessories, owning brands like Coach, Kate Spade, and Stuart Weitzman. The stock has been gaining as sales of the company’s Coach products have accelerated. Coach made up around 82% of the company’s total revenue last quarter. The company has also been improving its adjusted operating margins. Tapestry has an indicated dividend yield of 1.7%. Although this is lower than the other two names, it is substantially higher than the 1.2% yield of the Index. For consumer discretionary stocks, this alone is impressive. Analysts continue to like this stock. Among tracked price targets after the company’s May 8 earnings, the average target is nearly $91. This implies upside in shares of over 9%. Overall, these stocks could offer a way to capitalize on the recovering consumer discretionary sector while achieving the dividend income goal. This key combination can provide upside and a steady source of income return. 9. Zoe Bread’s TikTok campaign forces council to refund parking fines Zoe Bread’s TikTok campaign forces council to refund parking fines James Dawson BBC North West, Social Media Lead BBC Social media user Zoë Bread continues to operate under a loaf-based alias A woman has won a long-running battle over a parking fine after sharing her ordeal to TikTok under her alter-ego Zoë Bread. Zoë Bread’s campaign started when she received a penalty for parking on Collier Street in Manchester and claimed confusing signs meant she bought a ticket from the wrong machine. Manchester City Council has now backed down and Zoë wants to help other people who had been caught out in the same way Council leader Bev Craig said the signs “could be clearer” and that some other fines issued on the street over the past year would be quashed. After a month-long campaign that included challenging Greater Manchester metro mayor Andy Burnham on a BBC Radio Manchester phone-in, she finally won her battle. “The only part of it that I think is bad is the amount of effort it took to get heard, which is obviously not possible for a proper person to do,” she told the BBC. She added that “their system doesn’t work, but my system does,” putting down her success to being “persistent and annoying”. Zoë Bread said her problems began because the ‘Pay At Machine’ sign on the street pointed to both a council-run car park and private one. After unsuccessfully arguing her case, she submitted a Freedom of Information (FOI) request to the council about how many fines had been issued on the street. But the council knocked it back. Opposition Liberal Democrat councillor Alan Good applauded Zoë’s campaign. But he said it “shouldn’t have taken the social media pressure that was largely due to Zoë’s following”. He said the council should cancel fines going back further than the last 12 months, considering the big rise in penalties in 2018, when the privately-run car park was first opened. She said the signs on the street complied with all the rules, but that there would be changes. Craig added: “We’re going to address this as soon as possible with new signs, by relocating the metre and by asking the owners of the nearby private car park to take down their signs which have contributed to confusion. “As a goodwill gesture, we will also quash any pending or unpaid tickets relating to Collier Street – including Zoe’s – and review our records of fines for the last 12 months in that location. “We will refund anyone who said at the time that they believed they had paid for their parking.” Source link #Zoe #Breads #TikTok #campaign #forces #council #refund #parking #fines Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content] For verified travel tips and real support, visit: [Hidden Content]
  10. May 22 Will Be a Huge Day for Warhammer Fans May 22 Will Be a Huge Day for Warhammer Fans Warhammer fans have been living their best lives ever since Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 released. With consistent content drops and a third title already confirmed to be in development, fans of the series are being treated like emperors. Talk about quality service. It’s very rare for a franchise to stay relevant in gaming even after all these years, especially in today’s competitive market. But Warhammer has emerged victorious against all odds, and guess what? It has no intention of slowing down with a new game already on the way and dropping as soon as this week. Warhammer 40,000: Speed Freeks is leaving early access this week Developer Caged Element Inc. and publisher Wired Productions have announced that Warhammer 40,000: Speed Freeks is finally launching with its 1.0 version this week, officially leaving early access after being in it for nearly a year. While the game is releasing as advertised, it’s undergoing some major changes. For starters, the game is no longer free-to-play. But wait, just a moment, as the game will cost just $15.99, which is a refreshingly low paywall and way less than the now normalised 80 bucks. Additionally, the developers clarified in a press release that players who were already playing the early access version of the title will receive the game for free. Warhammer 40,000: Speed Freek’s early access managed to rack up 250,000 players, and if you were one of them, you’ll be upgraded to the launch version at no extra cost. Microtransactions present in the early access are also being axed for the premium version, and if you purchased or earned any of the game’s premium currency in early access, you’ll still be able to use it for the next 12 months. Another huge change is the publisher. The free-to-play version was published by PLAION, while the premium release is being published by Wired Productions. There are no hard feelings between them, and Caged Element game director Chris Mallinson had nothing but good things to say about them in a press release. We set out to make the Orkiest of Warhammer 40,000 games, and through our Early Access ******* we’ve had thousands of people help us achieve that goal—along with our previous publisher PLAION. Chris further explained in the press release how teaming up with Wired Productions to release the premium version of the game allowed them to approach it differently. Plus, the devs worked with the publishers on a previous title, so it’s a win-win for both parties. Now with Wired Productions picking up the torch, we’re launching out of Early Access and into version 1.0 with a different approach that we think players will really appreciate and enjoy. We thank both partners for their dedication to the game, along with Games Workshop. We’re of course very happy to be back with our pals at Wired Productions, since we worked with them before on GRIP. Now enuff o’ dat, on to da WAAAGH!!! Seems like May 22 is shaping up to be a grand day for Warhammer fans as they finally join in on the wackiness of the combat racing title featuring the Orks. While it isn’t a traditional Warhammer title, it’s gearing up to be a damn good time because, who doesn’t want to drive weaponised cars and just obliterate other players on the track? Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 3 is also in development Knight Titus will be making a comeback soon | Image Credit: Focus Entertainment While players race through the Warhammer universe in Speed Freeks, it’s worth remembering that the next mainline game, Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 3, is already in development. Focus Entertainment already put out a press release on their website a few months ago, stating that the title is officially in development. Focus didn’t reveal any other crucial details, but they did confirm that Titus will be making his return in the highly anticipated threequel. We’re still years away from seeing a potential reveal for the game, but it’s good to know that the developers at Saber Interactive are hard at work and cooking some delicious delicacies for the fans. So, what do you think about Warhammer 40,000: Speed Freeks launching this week? Will you be checking it out, or is being a Space Marine more up your alley? 12. Caught on camera, capuchin monkeys kidnap howler monkey babies Caught on camera, capuchin monkeys kidnap howler monkey babies WASHINGTON (AP) — A baby howler monkey clung to the back of an older male monkey, its tiny fingers grasping fur. But they’re not related and not even the same species. Scientists spotted surprising evidence of what they describe as monkey kidnappings while reviewing video footage from a small island of Panama. The capuchin monkeys were seen carrying at least 11 howler babies between 2022 and 2023. “This was very much a shocking finding,” said Zoë Goldsborough, a behavioral ecologist at the Max Planck Institute of Animal Behavior in Germany. “We’ve not seen anything like this in the animal kingdom.” The monkeys’ motivations remain under investigation. Capuchins are house cat-size monkeys found in South America and Central America. They are long-lived, clever and learn new behaviors from each other. One group of capuchins in Panama has even learned to use stone tools to crack open nuts and seafood. Goldsberg and other researchers at Max Planck and the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute had set up more than 80 cameras to study capuchin tool use, but were surprised to see the first howler babies appear in early 2022. The footage showed the capuchins walking and pounding their stone tools with baby howlers on their backs. But cameras did not capture the moments of abduction, which scientists said likely happened up in the trees, where howlers spend most of their time. “Our window into this story is constrained,” said co-author Margaret Crofoot of Max Planck and the Smithsonian. The findings were published Monday in the journal Current Biology. In most or all cases, the baby howlers died, researchers said. Infant howler monkeys would normally be carried by their mothers while still nursing. All the babies in the video — from a few weeks to a few months in age — were too young to be weaned. “A hopeful part of me wants to believe some escaped and went back to their mothers, but we don’t know,” said Crofoot. The videos recorded a few instances of young capuchin males still carrying howler babies that had died, likely from starvation. Many animals — from gorillas to orcas — have been observed carrying their own dead offspring, though scientists aren’t sure the reasons. Why did the capuchin males do it? There were no signs of deliberate aggression toward the babies and they weren’t eaten, ruling out predation. “We’ve all spent hours wracking our brains why they would do this,” said Goldsborough. The first baby-snatcher may have had a confused “caring motivation,” or parental instinct, because he showed gentleness interacting with the infants, she said. Then four other males copied his actions. The researchers said they don’t believe the capuchins harmed the babies on purpose. So far, only one group of capuchins has been known to kidnap. The research shows the “remarkable behavioral variation across social groups of the same species,” said Catherine Crockford, a primatologist at the CNRS Institute for Cognitive Sciences in France, who was not involved in the study. ___ The Associated Press Health and Science Department receives support from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute’s Science and Educational Media Group and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. 14. Supreme Court will allow Trump administration to end TPS program for Venezuelans Supreme Court will allow Trump administration to end TPS program for Venezuelans Washington — The Supreme Court on Monday said it will let the Trump administration end the Temporary Protected Status program protecting roughly 350,000 Venezuelan migrants from the threat of deportation while legal proceedings over the move continue. The high court granted the administration’s request to lift for now a lower court’s injunction that blocked Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem’s revocation of the Temporary Protected Status program, or TPS, for Venezuelans. Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson said she would deny the administration’s bid for emergency relief. Noem terminated the designation — which had been extended by the Biden administration — in February, a move that would have cleared the way for Venezuelans to lose their government-issued work permits and deportations protections on April 7. But a federal judge in California blocked the action in late March and said her decision to terminate the TPS program for the Venezuelan migrants appeared to be “predicated on negative stereotypes” and may have been motivated by unconstitutional animus. A federal appeals court declined to provide emergency relief to the Trump administration and pause the district court’s order, leading the Trump administration to seek the Supreme Court’s intervention. “So long as the order is in effect, the secretary must permit hundreds of thousands of Venezuelan nationals to remain in the country, notwithstanding her reasoned determination that doing so is ‘contrary to the national interest,'” Solicitor General John Sauer wrote in the administration’s emergency appeal with the high court. Congress in 1990 created the program that allows the federal government to provide temporary immigration protections for migrants from countries experiencing wars, natural disasters or other “extraordinary and temporary” conditions that make it dangerous to send deportees there. The program allows beneficiaries to apply for renewable work permits and deportation deferrals. During the Biden administration, then-Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas designated Venezuela for the Temporary Protected Status program, citing “extraordinary and temporary” conditions that prevented Venezuelans in the U.S. from returning to their home country. Mayorkas extended the designation, set to last 18 months, in October 2023. In addition to designating Venezuela for TPS, the Biden administration also created or expanded programs for Afghanistan, Cameroon, Haiti and Ukraine. The Venezuelan program is the largest and covers roughly 600,000 people through two separate designations, though only the designation from 2023 is at issue in the case before the Supreme Court. After Mr. Trump took office for his second term, Noem vacated the extension for more than 350,000 Venezuelans, finding that it was “contrary to the national interest” to continue the program. The termination was set to take effect April 7. The Trump administration is also revoking TPS protections for tens of thousands of Haitians, with that move set to take effect in August. TPS beneficiaries and the National TPS Alliance filed a lawsuit in February challenging Noem’s decision to end the protections for Venezuelans, and U.S. District Judge Edward Chen ruled in their favor, stopping Noem’s termination determination from taking effect nationwide. In a filing with the Supreme Court, Sauer said the district court’s order “wrested control of the nation’s immigration policy away from the Executive Branch and imposed the court’s own perception.” “The district court’s decision undermines the Executive Branch’s inherent powers as to immigration and foreign affairs,” he wrote, calling the lower court’s injunction “ill-considered.” But in response to the request, lawyers for TPS beneficiaries told the Supreme Court in a filing that lifting the district court’s injunction would harm the nearly 350,000 people who would immediately lose their right to live and work in the U.S. “Staying the district court’s order would cause far more harm than it would stop,” they wrote. “It would radically shift the status quo, stripping plaintiffs of their legal status and requiring them to return to a country the State Department still deems too dangerous even to visit.” They said that the TPS statute does not grant the Homeland Security secretary authority to vacate or rescind an extension, and Noem’s terminations of TPS extensions for Venezuela and Haiti were the first and second times that a secretary has set an extension aside in the statute’s history. The request for emergency relief from the Trump administration is one of more than a dozen involving Mr. Trump’s second-term agenda that has landed before the Supreme Court, and one of several involving his immigration plans. The Supreme Court heard arguments on May 15 on the Trump administration’s request to narrow nationwide injunctions blocking enforcement of an executive order that seeks to end birthright citizenship. 15. Mark Cavendish robbers must repay £754,000 after Essex raid Mark Cavendish robbers must repay £754,000 after Essex raid Lewis Adams BBC News, Essex Reporting fromChelmsford Crown CourtPA Media Mark and Peta Cavendish were sleeping at home when the gang broke in Masked intruders who held Olympic cyclist Mark Cavendish at knifepoint as they robbed his house must repay more than £750,000 or face six extra years in prison each. Romario Henry, Ali Sesay and Jo Jobson broke into the athlete’s house in Ongar, Essex, while he and his family slept. Two Richard Mille watches, valued at £400,000 and £350,000, are still missing after the raid on 27 November 2021, Chelmsford Crown Court heard. The jailed robbers were told their sentences would be extended if they did not pay £754,525 within three months. The gang, who covered their faces with balaclavas during the robbery, also stole three phones, worth £2,325, an empty safe and a £2,200 Louis Vuitton suitcase. They repeatedly punched Sir Mark, who was in bed with his wife, Peta, upon entering his bedroom. Essex Police Romario Henry, Ali Sesay and Jo Jobson were given lengthy prison sentences for their roles in the robbery Judge Alexander Mills said the trio took “joint control” of the stolen property and “obtained the benefit that flowed” from the robbery. He said the watches were “never located at the scene and have not been seen since”, despite Henry claiming they had been sold. They were luxury items that would not depreciate, but instead act as a “store of wealth”, Judge Mills said. “I don’t accept it was inevitable that they were sold,” he added. The judge said they were “clearly in it together” and that each defendant benefited financially from the break-in. Judge Mills said 28-year-old Jobson, who was convicted of robbery, was paid £4,000 to take part. “He was promised a further £6,000 on completion, but this was never paid to him,” the judge added. Essex Police The Richard Mille watches have never been recovered Analysing the defendants’ finances, Judge Mills said Sesay owned a £1,000 Mercedes and £24,740 in cash, while Henry had no assets. Jobson had an unspecified amount of money in a bank account, which was seized alongside Sesay’s goods. The judge said the £754,525 sum could be paid off by any of the defendants. He also ordered £1,897 to be paid in compensation to Sir Mark and £3,359 to Mrs Cavendish, as well as an unspecified amount to a company that leased the watches to them. Henry, 34, of Bell Green, Lewisham, south London, was found guilty of two robbery offences after a trial in 2023, while 30-year-old Sesay, of Holding Street, Rainham, Kent, admitted the same offences. They were jailed for 15 and 12 years respectively. Jobson, 28, of no fixed abode, went on the run after the break-in. He was given a 15-year prison term after a separate trial. 16. Fears for Aussie workers as Trump’s tariffs hit hard Fears for Aussie workers as Trump’s tariffs hit hard Hundreds of workers are in limbo after a major Tasmanian smelter paused operations, citing tariffs, ore supply and global price volatility. The move by Liberty Bell Bay, located in George Town, has prompted calls from both state and federal governments for transparency and urgent support for Australia’s only commercial ferroalloy operation. It produces ferromanganese and silicomanganese and is one of Tasmania’s largest industrial energy users. The smelter, which employs more than 250 people, is owned by British businessman Sanjeev Gupta’s GFG Alliance, and is the latest of Mr Gupta’s assets to face turmoil. Earlier this year, the South *********** government forced his Whyalla steelworks into administration, with administrator KordaMentha overseeing debts reportedly around $1 billion, the ABC reports. Camera IconLiberal election event at Liberty in Bell Bay. ABC/pool Credit: News Corp Australia A spokesperson for Liberty Bell Bay, formerly known as TEMCO, said the facility lost its primary ore supplier after Tropical Cyclone Megan struck in March 2024. “We are still working through ore supply options at present,” the spokesperson said. “Price volatility globally and the imposition of tariffs in the US have also impacted operations. “Due to ongoing challenges with ore supply, Liberty Bell Bay has no option but to enter a ******* of limited operations.” ‘Big beautiful bill’ to push the ASX deeply in the red The news comes as cautious investors pushed the ASX lower on Monday as investors wait to see the outcome of the Reserve Bank of Australia’s board meeting and monitor the US debt markets. The benchmark ASX 200 slumped 48.60 points or 0.58 per cent to 8,295.10. The broader All Ordinaries Index also finished in the red down 55.10 points or 0.64 per cent to 8,524.80. Nine of the 11 sectors finished in the red, led by energy and material stocks which were down 1.82 and 1.55 per cent respectively. Among the key falls were the major iron ore miners including BHP which slid 2.44 per cent to $38.75, Rio Tinto which fell 1.31 per cent to $119.46 and Fortescue Metals which slumped 4.88 per cent to $16.17. It was a mixed day for Australia’s big four banks. CBA jumped 1.00 per cent to $171.36 while Westpac dropped 0.76 per cent to $31.37, NAB fell 0.46 per cent to $36.84 and ANZ sank 1.73 per cent to $28.40. IG market analyst Tony Sycamore said investors were cautious ahead of the “very unlikely scenario” the Reserve Bank of Australia does not cut on Tuesday. “If we don’t get a rate cut tomorrow the ASX 200 will be down 100 points and it will be a tricky day,” he said. “It’s fully priced in so there will be carnage in the rates market, carnage in the equities market, the Aussie dollar will probably be supported.” Mr Sycamore said the other major issue to watch is the US bond rate, which is on the back of US President Donald Trump’s latest bill. Dubbed the “big, beautiful bill” by Mr Trump, there are substantive tax cuts of $2.5 trillion over 10 years, which could mean $4 trillion less is added to the government’s coffers by 2034. Mr Sycamore warns, what happens tomorrow will largely depend on how the bond market reacts to the White House bill. Camera IconNine of the 11 sectors finished in the red. We could come into an absolute shocker tomorrow but I think it’s all going to depend on where the US yields and whether they can digest it or not,” he said. “It feels like yields want to pop to me, but it is at a huge level and whether it pops now or in a month’s time it’s hard to tell.” Moody’s downgraded the US from its all important triple A credit rating, while US Treasury yields were up, with 10 year treasuries adding 7 basis points to 4.51 per cent while 30 year treasuries notched 8 basis points to 4.98 per cent. Defensive stocks including gold miners were among the major winners with Capricorn Metals was the best performer on the ASX 200, rising 3.4 per cent to $8.71, while Evolution Mining rose 3.2 per cent to $8.12. In company news, New Hope shares tumbled 7.1 per cent to $3.65 after downgrading its guidance for future coal output and sales. Domino’s shares also slumped 2.6 per cent to $24.55, after announcing the chief of its *********** and New Zealand business Kerri Hayman would step down in August, following just nine months in the job. Speaking to Fox News Digital at his “Rock N Rodeo” event in Arlington, Texas, on Friday, the singer was asked about the state of the culture wars in the United States since Trump returned to the White House in January. “I think wokeness and DEI and cancel culture is starting to exit the building, and we can thank President Trump for leading that charge once again,” he answered. “I call him the dragon slayer in that regard, ’cuz he just came and slit the throat of DEI and wokeness. Kid Rock is interviewed by Fox News at his ‘Rock N Rodeo’ event in Arlington, Texas, on May 16 2025 (Fox News) “There’s always gonna be cancel culture at some level, somebody getting butt sore about this, wants to protest and not buy a product or whatever. You know, me personally, I’m not into seeing people lose their jobs over some corporate decision that was made.” Drawing attention to his own role in the anti-woke pushback, notably joining the conservative boycott of Bud Light beer in 2023 after the brand featured transgender influencer Dylan Mulvaney in a commercial, Rock continued: “Sometimes there needs [to be] a little spanking there, like Bud Light had from me and some other people, but at the end of the day, we forgave them, said, ‘It’s all good. Let’s get back on track.’ “I do think it’s exiting the building right now, and hopefully it stays gone, but we should be a merit-based system. The best and [most] hardworking rises to the top. “I don’t know how we got here, because to me, that’s just common sense, that’s just the ultimate, highest level of common sense that just the best and the hardest workers rise to the top. It doesn’t matter, anything else.” A long-time supporter and Florida golf buddy of Trump, Rock was invited to sum up the president’s first four months back in the Oval Office. Kid Rock joins Donald Trump in the Oval Office for an executive order signing on March 31 2025 (Getty) “My thoughts on President Trump’s presidency? Greatest president ever. I can sum it up like that,” he responded. “Not only because of our friendship and all the laughs we share on the golf course or hanging out at UFC fights or whatever it might be, but just the tenacity this man has. You know, the most resilient. “You know, I call myself the American Bad A**, but I think I got to ride shotgun on that moniker when I’m with the president. Just somebody who loves this country unapologetically, and fights for it every single day.” Hinting at the extent of his personal pull with Trump, Rock said: “I remind him every day that, ‘Don’t forget, Mr President.’ I was like, ‘We can deal with reasonable people on the left.’ “‘That’s no problem,’ I go. ‘But there’s a lot of bad actors. Their goal, at the highest level, is to lock you up and take everything you had,’ I go. ‘And that we can’t forget. Those people need to be dealt with. But, other than that, love everybody. Computex 2025 Day Zero Wrap-Up: AI comes into focus, 500 Hz QD-OLEDs blossom, dual-GPU Arc Pro B60 workstation cards inbound Computex 2025 Day Zero Wrap-Up: AI comes into focus, 500 Hz QD-OLEDs blossom, dual-GPU Arc Pro B60 workstation cards inbound It’s hard to believe that it’s been a year since we last visited Computex, but here we are again with all the latest and greatest advancements coming from your favorite names in tech. We have Tom’s Hardware editors on the ground in Taipei bringing you everything that we see on the show floor (and beyond), which you can peruse in our dedicated Computex 2025 hub. However, we’ll give you a quick rundown of all the goodness announced during “Day Zero” of Computex 2025. As has been the case in recent years at the show, artificial intelligence (AI) weighs heavily on the minds of today’s tech giants, and they are leaning heavily on incorporating the technology into nearly everything they make. Making Waves with AI When it comes to AI, Nvidia is on the bleeding edge with its accelerators. Nvidia announced its NVLink Fusion program to better use mixed-vendor hardware, allowing its customers and partners to develop custom rack-scale designs. Even though NVLink is a proprietary interlink responsible for facilitating CPU-to-CPU and GPU-to-GPU communications, NVLink Fusion will extend this capability to non-Nvidia hardware from Qualcomm, Fujitsu, Marvell, and MediaTek. You may like (Image credit: Nvidia) In other news, Nvidia announced it would partner with Foxconn to build a powerful AI supercomputer in Taiwan. The new cluster will feature 10,000 Blackwell GPUs and will have a price tag that will easily stretch into the hundreds of millions of dollars range. Display Technology is Big Business at Computex 2025 We’ve just grown accustomed to Nvidia G-Sync and AMD FreeSync technologies being incorporated into nearly every gaming monitor that launches. However, there’s no guarantee that you’ll find this variable refresh rate technology in modern televisions. Today, Samsung announced that its 2025 lineup of popular OLED TVs will incorporate both G-Sync and FreeSync Premium Pro support. If that was enough, Samsung is also leaning into the AI side of the equation with a new AI Auto Game Mode, which can automatically scan games to make real-time adjustments to picture and sound settings based on genre. (Image credit: Future) MSI is adding to a growing field of monitor manufacturers embracing 500 Hz+ panels. While we first saw these ultra-fast monitors with IPS or TN panels, MSI is one of the few using QD-OLED technology. The MPG 271QR QD-OLED X50 is a 1440p monitor with DisplayHDR True ****** 500, VESA ClearMR 21000, and a 0.03 ms response time. Like Samsung, MSI is uniquely leveraging AI. The company’s AI Care Sensor can detect when a person is not sitting in front of the screen so that it can power down to lessen panel wear and save power. Acer is blitzed Computex with a slew of new monitors, including several from its Predator, Nitro, and ProCreator product lines. The headliner from Acer is undoubtedly the Predator X27U F5, which features a 500 Hz 1440p panel (likely the same one used in the MSI above). Get Tom’s Hardware’s best news and in-depth reviews, straight to your inbox. New GPUs to the Rescue! It wouldn’t be Computex without putting a spotlight on new gaming GPUs. In recent years, Intel has decided to rub shoulders with Nvidia and AMD in the discrete GPU market; the latest product from the company is the Arc Pro B-Series, which is aimed at workstations. The Arc Pro B50 is priced at $299 and features 16GB of VRAM, while the $499 Arc Pro B60 will feature 24GB of onboard VRAM and 197 peak TOPS. Taking things to the extreme, Maxsun is slapping two B60 GPUs onto one card called the Arc Pro B60 Dual 48G Turbo. As a result, this dual-GPU monster has 48GB of RAM and could retail for closer to $1,000. Star Wars Episode 3 celebrates 20th anniversary Star Wars Episode 3 celebrates 20th anniversary On this day in 2005, the highly anticipated conclusion to the prequel trilogy and entire Star Wars saga (pre-Disney) was released in theaters. Star Wars: Episode 3 – Revenge of the Sith has finally reached its 20th anniversary, though the celebrations have already started ahead of time. May 19 may be the movie’s theatrical release, but select theaters have already offered special 20th anniversary screenings from April 25 – April 30, as reported officially by StarWars.com. In fact, cast members Hayden Christensen (Anakin Skywalker) and Samuel Jackson (Mace Windu) surprised fans attending the screening at Hollywood’s El Capitan Theatre: When it comes to looking back at the pre-release hype of Revenge of the Sith from 2005, Star Wars fans have plenty to fondly reminisce over. Revenge of the Sith’s marketing had everything from Hasbro’s tie-in toys (and its commercials) to a number of tie-in video games such as the ROTS game itself (which had its own 20th Anniversary on May 5) and the classic Star Wars: Battlefront II. Feel free to watch YouTube content creator Flandrew’s video on Episode 3’s marketing hype: Of course, Star Wars fans can still playfully joke/reference Episode 3’s various one-liners, thanks to a never-ending abundance of prequel memes. Whether it’s “Hello there/General Kenobi,” “I am the Senate,” or “I have the High Ground,” the internet/meme side of the movie’s fandom has fans more than covered. Star Wars Episode 3 concludes the Prequel Trilogy that explores the events set before the iconic Original Trilogy. Three years into the Clone Wars, fans witnessed the eventually fall of Jedi Knight Anakin Skywalker to the Dark Side, the fall of the Jedi order and rise of the evil Galactic Empire. Revenge of the Sith is available to stream on Disney Plus, as well as physical releases on DVD/Blu-Ray. 23. Trump clip altered to spread false Ohio train derailment claim Trump clip altered to spread false Ohio train derailment claim Donald Trump visited the site of a major freight train accident in the US state of Ohio in 2023 to criticize the handling of the incident by the Biden administration. But social media posts claiming the US president recently promised a new investigation into the disaster from the Oval Office are false; they share an altered video first spread by an account which says its content is satirical. “Trump just said the quiet part out loud. Again,” claims a May 8, 2025 post on X. In the video, Trump appears to say: “East Palestine, Ohio. It was the largest environmental terror attack in world history and it was an inside job.” He goes on to threaten the death penalty for anyone found responsible for the February 2023 train derailment which set off a days-long fire and resulted in the release of hazardous chemicals including vinyl chloride. Screenshot of a post on X taken on May 16, 2025 The claim echoes baseless conspiracy theories which circulated just following the toxic spill, with many implying that the derailment was planned. Following a year-long investigation, the National Transportation Safety Board said a rail car’s defective wheel bearing caused the derailment and found no evidence of foul play (archived here). In its June 2024 report the agency said: “Overheated wheel bearings are a common cause of rail accidents” and the systems in place to detect an issue did not warn the crew to slow down before it was too late (archived here). The US government reached a more than $310 million settlement with Norfolk Southern Railway Company “to address and pay for the damage caused by the Feb. 3, 2023, train derailment” (archived here). Trump has long criticized the Biden administration’s handling of the disaster, visiting with residents of East Palestine as he campaigned for the presidency. But the clip which seems to show Trump discussing the ****** from the Oval Office is not authentic. Reverse image search shows it is a digitally manipulated version of a May 8 trade announcement made by the US president. 24. Microsoft introduces GitHub AI agent that can code for you Microsoft introduces GitHub AI agent that can code for you Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella speaks at an event commemorating the 50th anniversary of the company at Microsoft headquarters in Redmond, Washington, on , April 4, 2025. David Ryder | Bloomberg | Getty Images Microsoft’s GitHub unit on Monday introduced a Copilot artificial intelligence agent that can take on specific programming work and inform people once it has finished. From there, developers can check the agent’s work from GitHub, a widely used repository for code. They can request modifications and then allow GitHub to add the source code to existing files. The launch, announced at Microsoft’s Build developer conference in Seattle, shows that the technology company wants to make AI a more natural part of the process of enhancing software. The coding agent might help Microsoft distinguish its developer tools from alternatives from companies such as Atlassian and GitLab. “Using state-of-the-art models, the agent excels at low-to-medium complexity tasks in well-tested codebases, from adding features and fixing bugs to extending tests, refactoring code, and improving documentation,” Thomas Dohmke, CEO of GitHub, wrote in a blog post. Anthropic’s Claude 3.7 Sonnet AI model powers the coding agent, a GitHub spokesperson said. When you assign an issue to Copilot in GitHub, the coding agent responds with the eyes emoji. It puts its work in a new file and summarizes its work. Rather than being confined to an application for composing code, the agent appears as just another programmer on the team. “The GitHub Copilot coding agent fits into our existing workflow and converts specifications to production code in minutes,” Alex Devkar, senior vice president of engineering and analytics at used car retailer Carvana, was quoted as saying in the blog post. “This increases our velocity and enables our team to channel their energy toward higher-level creative work.” In recent months, developers and people with less technical know-how have adopted “vibe-coding” systems such as Cursor and Windsurf that write programs with a few words of human direction. Much of their use is associated with the creation of new capabilities. GitHub’s coding agent, by comparison, could assist with maintaining code libraries. GitHub has grown since Microsoft acquired it in 2018, generating over $2 billion in annualized revenue as of last summer. The GitHub Copilot assistant, which recently gained an agent mode feature to help it compete with Cursor and Windsurf, now has over 15 million users, four times more than a year earlier, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella told analysts on a conference call earlier this month. A free Copilot tier for individuals provides limited access. The new coding agent won’t be free, though. It will be available to developers with Copilot Pro+ subscriptions and organizations that subscribe to the Copilot Enterprise service tier, GitHub said. It’s available in preview, meaning that GitHub will take early user feedback, the spokesperson said.
