Indian author scripts history with International Booker Prize win
Indian writer-lawyer-activist Banu Mushtaq has scripted history by winning the International Booker prize for the short story anthology, Heart Lamp.
It is the first book written in the Kannada language, which is spoken in the southern Indian state of Karnataka, to win the prestigious prize.
The stories in Heart Lamp were translated into English by Deepa Bhasthi.
Featuring 12 short stories written by Mushtaq over three decades from 1990 to 2023, Heart Lamp poignantly captures the hardships of ******* women living in southern India.
Mushtaq’s win comes off the back of Geetanjali Shree’s Tomb of Sand – translated from Hindi by Daisy Rockwell – winning the prize in 2022.
Her body of work is well-known among book lovers, but the Booker International win has shone a ******* spotlight on her life and literary oeuvre, which mirrors many of the challenges the women in her stories face, brought on by religious conservatism and a deeply patriarchal society.
It is this self-awareness that has, perhaps, helped Mushtaq craft some of the most nuanced characters and plot-lines.
“In a literary culture that rewards spectacle, Heart Lamp insists on the value of attention — to lives lived at the edges, to unnoticed choices, to the strength it takes simply to persist. That is Banu Mushtaq’s quiet power,” a review in the Indian Express newspaper says about the book.
Mushtaq grew up in a small town in the southern state of Karnataka in a ******* neighbourhood and like most girls around her, studied the Quran in the Urdu language at school.
But her father, a government employee, wanted more for her and at the age of eight, enrolled her in a convent school where the medium of instruction was the state’s official language – Kannada.
Mushtaq worked hard to become fluent in Kannada, but this alien tongue would become the language she chose for her literary expression.
She began writing while still in school and chose to go to college even as her peers were getting married and raising children.
It would take several years before Mushtaq was published and it happened during a particularly challenging phase in her life.
Her short story appeared in a local magazine a year after she had married a man of her choosing at the age of 26, but her early marital years were also marked by conflict and strife – something she openly spoke of, in several interviews.
In an interview with Vogue magazine, she said, “I had always wanted to write but had nothing to write (about) because suddenly, after a love marriage, I was told to wear a burqa and dedicate myself to domestic work. I became a mother suffering from postpartum depression at 29”.
In the another interview to The Week magazine, she spoke of how she was forced to live a life confined within the four walls of her house.
Then, a shocking act of defiance set her free.
“Once, in a fit of despair, I poured white petrol on myself, intending to set myself on fire. Thankfully, he [the husband] sensed it in time, hugged me, and took away the matchbox. He pleaded with me, placing our baby at my feet saying, ‘Don’t abandon us’,” she told the magazine.
In Heart Lamp, her female characters mirror this spirit of resistance and resilience.
“In mainstream Indian literature, ******* women are often flattened into metaphors — silent sufferers or tropes in someone else’s moral argument. Mushtaq refuses both. Her characters endure, negotiate, and occasionally push back — not in ways that claim headlines, but in ways that matter to their lives,” according to a review of the book in The Indian Express newspaper.
Mushtaq went on to work as a reporter in a prominent local tabloid and also associated with the Bandaya movement – which focussed on addressing social and economic injustices through literature and activism.
After leaving journalism a decade later, she took up work as a lawyer to support her family.
In a storied career spanning several decades, she has published a copious amount of work; including six short story collections, an essay collection and a novel.
But her incisive writing has also made her a target of hate.
In an interview to The Hindu newspaper, she spoke about how in the year 2000, she received threatening phone calls after she expressed her opinion supporting women’s right to offer prayer in mosques.
A fatwa – a legal ruling as per Islamic law – was issued against her and a man tried to attack her with a knife before he was overpowered by her husband.
But these incidents did not faze Mushtaq, who continued to write with fierce honesty.
“I have consistently challenged chauvinistic religious interpretations. These issues are central to my writing even now. Society has changed a lot, but the core issues remain the same. Even though the context evolves, the basic struggles of women and marginalised communities continue,” she told The Week magazine.
Over the years Mushtaq’s writings have won numerous prestigious local and national awards including the Karnataka Sahitya Academy Award and the Daana Chintamani Attimabbe Award.
In 2024, the translated English compilation of Mushtaq’s five short story collections published between 1990 and 2012 – Haseena and Other Stories – won the PEN Translation Prize.

George Wendt, who starred as Norm Peterson in the popular comedy series Cheers, has died at the age of 76.
The beloved actor and comedian died peacefully in his sleep at his home early on Tuesday morning, his family said.
“George was a doting family man, a well-loved friend and confidant to all of those lucky enough to have known him. He will be missed forever,” a representative told the BBC.
Wendt starred as Norm in all 275 episodes of Cheers, which ran from 1982-93. He earned six consecutive Emmy nominations for outstanding supporting actor in a comedy series.
Wendt’s character Norm was a well-loved bar regular, and was one of the few characters to appear in every episode of Cheers.
His entrance into the bar was a running gag on the show, beginning with him greeting the other patrons followed by the crowd yelling his name.
Wendt reunited with some of the cast at the 75th ********** Emmy Awards in 2024, including Ted Danson, Rhea Perlman, Kelsey Grammer and John Ratzenberger.

The Last of Us showrunner needs a Season 4 to tell the whole story
Showrunner Craig Mazin might be eyeing not just a third season, but also a fourth, for HBO’s The Last of Us, with seasons two to four potentially covering the story of the second game.
Speaking to Collider, he was asked about the plan, as the show has been running on seven or eight hour-long episodes a season. He also touched on both that part of Episode 6 Season 2 (if you know, you know) and how it was impactful and how potentially Season 3 will have a little more room and potentially longer than S2.
“I think there’s a decent chance that Season 3 will be longer than Season 2, just because the manner of that narrative and the opportunities it affords us are a little different. The thing about

Scientists find ‘2.6 million golden eggs’ near an underwater volcano
Scientists are speaking out about a remarkable discovery: Millions of living eggs near an underwater volcano off the west coast of Canada.
“The whole thing is wild,” lead researcher Cherisse Du Preez of Fisheries and Oceans Canada told USA TODAY in a May 20 email. “It challenges what we consider possible for life on this planet.”
The discovery dates back to 2023, but has received rounds of media attention since then. More detailed research findings are due to be published in a ********* government science report soon, Du Preez said.
The eggs, which come from the Pacific white skate, were found in waters once thought too cold to support life. The Pacific white skate is a “bone-white, bug-eyed relative of sharks that can live almost two miles underwater,” according to National Geographic.
“Ours were the first dives on the volcano. No one knew the ancient underwater volcano was active, let alone emitting heat,” said Du Preez. “And this geothermally heated hotspot was covered in giant eggs. We think the main nursery is home to 2.6 million golden eggs that take up to 10 years to incubate.”
She said the skates choose to lay their eggs on the vents to help with incubation: “The deep sea is cold, and heat helps! To grow big, strong animals, some warmth helps.”
The hot, mineral-rich fluid keeps the surrounding waters toasty, providing ideal conditions for some marine creatures to survive in the deep sea, Live Science said.
A Pacific white skate is seen on the sea floor off of the west coast of Canada in 2023.
“As a first, we filmed the female laying eggs. It’s out of this world, but at the same time >90% of the livable space on our planet is the deep sea,” Du Preez concluded.
Du Preez posted video of the discovery, including a robotic arm lifting one of the eggs, which appeared a vibrant gold color.

Google starts embedding AI chatbot into search
Google starts embedding AI chatbot into search

Google is introducing a new artificial intelligence mode that more firmly embeds chatbot capabilities into its search engine, aiming to give users the experience of having a conversation with an expert.
The “AI Mode” was made available in the US on Tuesday, appearing as an option in Google’s search bar.
The change, unveiled at the company’s annual developers conference in Mountain View, California, is part of the tech giant’s push to remain competitive against ChatGPT and other AI services, which threaten to erode Google’s dominance of online search.
The company also announced plans for its own augmented reality glasses and said it planned to offer a subscription AI tool.
Sundar Pichai, the chief executive of Google-parent Alphabet, said the incorporation of the company’s Gemini chatbot into its search signalled a “new phase of the AI platform shift”.
“With more advanced reasoning, you can ask AI both longer and more complex queries,” Pichai told the audience.
Leo Gebbie, principal analyst and director for the Americas at CCS Insight, said Google had been expected to wrap AI more tightly into its products.
He said he thought the chatbot would help minimise the number of web pages that users must sift through, while also allowing people to ask more complicated queries.
“For the end user, this should mean less time spent browsing the web itself, and more time spent talking with Google’s AI tools,” he said.
Any updates that Google makes to search are “of critical importance,” added Gebbie, since the search business contributes the vast majority of Google’s revenues.
The company is also fighting a court battle in the US over potential changes to its business after a judge ruled it had a monopoly in search.
Rocky road
Google has had mixed success in its recent attempts to incorporate more AI into its services.
Its AI Overviews feature, unveiled by Google at its developers conference last year, offers AI-generated summaries that currently appear at the top of search results.
It initially generated ridicule from users who posted some of the odd responses they received, as when it advised one user that non-toxic glue could help make cheese stick to pizza.
Another widely circulated response stated that geologists recommend humans eat one rock each day.
A Google spokesperson said at the time that these were “isolated examples.”
Mr Pichai said on Tuesday that AI Overviews now gets 1.5 billion uses per month in more than 200 countries and territories.
In its biggest markets – the US and India – AI Overviews drive more than 10% of growth in the types of queries that show them, Pichai said.
“It’s one of the most successful launches in search in the past decade,” he added.
Google also announced a new foray into AI-powered glasses.
The company pioneered smart glasses more than a decade ago with its “Google Glasses”, which ultimately flopped.
With the renewed effort, Google hopes to compete against Meta’s AI-powered glasses made with Ray-Ban.
The new Google glasses, which are being developed with eyeglass retailers Warby Parker and Gentle Monster, will feature a camera, microphone, and speakers.
The company said it expected to start building the new product later this year.

Labour postpones women’s conference after Supreme Court ruling
Labour postpones women’s conference after Supreme Court ruling
The Labour Party has postponed its annual Women’s Conference in the wake of advice following last month’s ruling on the legal definition of a woman.
Last month, the Supreme Court ruled that the legal definition of a woman is based on biological sex.
Up until the ruling, Labour had allowed people to self-identify as a woman, so trans women could attend the event and also take part in “positive action” measures such as all-women shortlists.
The decision has been condemned by trans rights advocates as an “attempt to isolate trans people” and by gender critical activists as “a kneejerk reaction”.
Labour Women’s Conference is traditionally held the day before the main conference and brings together hundreds of women from Labour’s activist base, including MPs, councillors, and supporters for a day of discussion and policy-making.
A leaked advice paper to Labour’s governing body, the National Executive Committee (NEC), recommended delaying the conference because the “only legally defensible alternative” would be to restrict attendance to biological women.
The paper set out how “there is a significant risk of legal challenge to the event as it currently operates” and “there may be protests, direct action and heightened security risks” if it goes ahead on 27 September.
That could carry a “political risk” of overshadowing the party’s showcase autumn conference which begins the following day on 28 September.
On Tuesday night, the party’s NEC voted to delay the conference, pending a wider review of positive action measures.
The NEC also decided to postpone the elections to the National Labour Women’s Committee, which are normally held at the conference, and to extend the terms of those currently serving.
Labour moved away from using all-women shortlists at the last general election. The leaked paper also advised the party to issue guidance to make clear that all-women shortlists can only apply to “applicants who were biologically female at birth”.
A Labour Party spokesperson said the party must make sure all its procedures “comply with the Supreme Court’s clear ruling”.
“Labour is clear that everyone in our society deserves to be treated with dignity and respect,” he said.
“The party will work closely with individuals and local parties to implement the necessary changes with sensitivity and care.”
Ministers will consider the Equality and Human Rights Commission’s code of practice, which it has just put out for consultation.
The decision was condemned by Georgia Meadows, who was speaking as LGBT+ Labour’s trans officer.
“It is a blatant attack on trans rights and is seemingly an attempt to isolate trans people even further within the Labour Party and the Labour movement more widely,” they said.
The Labour Women’s Declaration group, which backs “sex-based rights”, said cancelling the conference would be a “knee-jerk reaction”.
A spokesperson told the LabourList website: “We are shocked that hundreds of women in the Labour Party might be prevented from meeting at conference because the NEC would prefer to disadvantage all women rather than to exclude the very small number of trans-identified men who may wish to attend the women’s conference.”

Europa League final: Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou refutes suggestion he is ‘a clown’
Europa League final: Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou refutes suggestion he is ‘a clown’
An emotional Ange Postecoglou angrily dismissed the suggestion he is a “clown” in a combative news conference on the eve of Tottenham’s Europa League final against Manchester United.
Referencing a report in the Standard, external which said he was “teetering between hero and clown” depending on the result in Bilbao, Spurs boss Postecoglou defended his managerial record despite his side’s poor domestic season.
In Wednesday’s final, Tottenham will either end a 17-year wait for a trophy or finish the campaign empty-handed again, on the back of their worst campaign since the club returned to the top flight in 1978.
Speaking at San Mames Stadium, Postecoglou veered from simmering discontent to his voice cracking with emotion as he recounted his personal journey and that of his family.
He brought the conversation back to the article when the reporter who wrote it pointed out this season could become one of the best or worst in the club’s “modern history” and the *********** was veering a fine line “between two very different types of infamy”.
“Irrespective of tomorrow, I’m not a clown and never will be,” said Postecoglou.
“You really disappointed me that you used such terminology to describe a person that for 26 years, without any favours from anyone, has worked his way to a position where he is leading out a club in a European final.
“For you to suggest that somehow us not being successful means that I’m a clown, I’m not sure how to answer that question.”

I’ve been using Google’s new AI mode for Search – here’s how to master it
I’ve been using Google’s new AI mode for Search – here’s how to master it
Google’s AI Mode has finally emerged from Google Labs after a long ******* of experimentation and improvement. Now, anyone in the US can play around with using Google’s AI Mode to find answers about complex topics, among its other highlights.
AI Mode is a very different experience from the traditional Google Search and goes well beyond the paragraph AI Overview that everyone sees in terms of what it can do.
That’s because AI Mode works by sending out multiple related questions based on your initial single prompt. The responses from AI Mode are more comprehensive because they are based on simultaneous searches leveraging Gemini AI.
You may like
Unlike regular search, you’ll get full paragraphs, with summaries, bullet point breakdowns, comparisons, and suggestions for follow-up questions a la Perplexity. You ask it something like, “Which is better for a fall trip: Niagara or the Finger Lakes?” and instead of a thousand travel blogs, it gives you a tidy breakdown of pros and cons, best months to visit, and whether or not you’ll need bear spray.
All you need to do to get to AI Mode once it’s available for you is to click on the AI Mode tab on the left of Google’s search page. The real secret is learning how to use it well.
Be specific
While AI mode can be impressive, it’s also a bit like a genie that is very literal in its responses.
Broad queries such as “best headphones” will still get you something useful, but when you ask for “best noise-canceling headphones under $200 for frequent flyers with small ears,” AI Mode really shines.
Sign up for breaking news, reviews, opinion, top tech deals, and more.
That said, we’d still point you to our own best noise-canceling headphones guide for the absolute best advice, from people who have tested these things for many years. AI will never be able to do that. (Or at least not yet.)
AI Mode shouldn’t be the go-to for everything, of course. If you just need to look up a phone number, confirm the weather, or settle a bet about which “Fast & Furious” movie has the submarine, regular Google still wins for speed. But if you’re researching, planning, comparing, or learning, AI Mode can be a real comfort.
Ultimately, they can work together depending on your needs. AI search “feels very far from a zero-sum moment,” as Google CEO Sundar Pichai put it.
AI info hunter
I’ve used AI Mode for everything from planning meals to fixing plumbing and deciding on a movie to watch among multiple choices. The follow-ups give AI Mode real juice, because if the initial answer isn’t enough, you can ask deeper or tangential questions without rephrasing everything.
So, if I start with, “How do I begin composting?” and then ask, “What’s the best hut to put it in?” or “What should I add to make the eventual soil extra healthy?” that will likely guide it in the right direction.
Though useful, you should still take a grain or 10 of salt with the answers. As with AI Overviews, AI Mode is not infallible. It can misquote sources, hallucinate facts, or paraphrase in ways that sound authoritative but don’t quite check out. I once caught it claiming that oat milk is naturally carbonated (it is not).
There’s also the question of privacy. You’re sharing a lot more detail than just a few keywords, and it’s tracking a thread of what you’re saying. It’s not that you shouldn’t use it, but be aware that that’s part of the price for the features.
Proactive online search
Still, there’s no denying how useful it is. The more I use AI Mode, the more I find myself reaching for it first, especially when I don’t know how to phrase what I’m looking for. Like, “What kind of garden vegetables are low-maintenance and survive mild neglect?” AI Mode told me to plant kale.
AI Mode makes for a more proactive form of Google Search. It nudges you toward potentially better questions and explains how it is solving problems. So, give the AI Mode button a tap and see what you can find. You might not get perfection, but you’ll almost always get something useful or at least entertainingly useless.
As Pichai put it, AI search has “made the web itself more exciting.”

Judge denies request by Travis Hunter’s dad to lighten criminal sentence to help son with football career: ‘Sounds like special treatment’
Judge denies request by Travis Hunter’s dad to lighten criminal sentence to help son with football career: ‘Sounds like special treatment’
A Florida judge has denied a request by Travis Hunter’s father to lighten the community control supervision portion of a criminal sentence for gun and drug possession charges while declaring that it appeared that he was seeking “special treatment” because his son is a football star.
Travis Hunter Sr. is the father of the Jacksonville Jaguars rookie. Per a police report cited by USA Today, Hunter Sr., 39, was pulled over for not having “any lights for the tag” on his car in Lantana, Florida, in November 2023.
Police say they found drugs, a pistol and a loaded magazine upon searching Hunter Sr.’s car, per USA Today. Per the report, police say that they engaged in the search after identifying Hunter Sr. as a habitual traffic offender who was driving without a license.
Hunter Sr. pleaded guilty to drug possession and a gun charge after being charged with illegally possessing a firearm as a convicted felon. He was previously convicted in 2018 for ***** or possession of heroin with intent to sell, per USA Today.
Hunter Sr. was sentenced to 90 days in jail and three years of probation, including one year in community control supervision via a plea deal. He’s currently serving the community control supervision portion of his sentence in Florida, which confines him to his home unless he’s working or attending an activity approved by the state.
Hunter Jr. is a two-way football star who won the Heisman Trophy at Colorado last season and is now a member of the the Jaguars, who selected him with the No. 2 pick in April’s NFL Draft.

Hunter Sr.’s argument for a lightened sentence
Hunter Sr.’s lawyer, Bradford Cohen, argued before Judge Howard Coates in a Palm Beach County Court on Tuesday that Hunter Sr.’s circumstances had changed in that his son is able to employ him. Cohen requested a less restrictive sentence for Hunter Sr. so that he could “assist his son with furthering his very promising career with the National Football League.”
Per USA Today, Coates responded to Cohen that it appeared he was seeking special treatment for his client because of his son’s status.
“I hear these circumstances have changed, you know, my hat’s off to his son,” Coates said. “I don’t know that changes the father’s situation for me. In fact, it’s given me some concern that you’re almost arguing for special treatment.”
Cohen declared that he was not seeking special treatment.
“I’m not, judge, and I’ll tell you why,” Cohen said. “If someone was to win the lottery and someone was to get a new job, if someone was to move to a different neighborhood, all those situational changes aren’t asking for favoritism whatsoever.
“What I’m saying is his situation has changed in that his son is able to employ him. His son is able to give him stable housing and a stable environment. Those things are not asking for special treatment, judge. Those are simply issues that arose that changed the situation of an individual.”

Coates denied the request while continuing to declare that Cohen was arguing for special treatment.
“So say you, but probably 99 percent of the public out there that doesn’t have an athlete son who’s incredibly successful, might look at this and say, ‘This sounds like special treatment for the athlete’s father,'” Coates said.
Hunter Sr. was released from the jail portion of his sentence on Dec. 5, nine days before Hunter Jr. was named the Heisman Trophy winner at a ceremony in New York. Hunter Sr. was not permitted to attend the ceremony while serving the beginning of his community control supervision sentence.
A court did permit Hunter Sr. to attend the NFL Draft in Green Bay, Wisconsin, where the Jaguars traded up with the Cleveland Browns to select Hunter Jr. with the No. 2 pick. On Tuesday, Coates granted Hunter Sr. permission to travel to Tennessee to attend Hunter Jr.’s wedding on Saturday.

Switch 2’s Hyrule Warriors Will Delve Into Zelda Lore That Fans Have Been Wondering About
Switch 2’s Hyrule Warriors Will Delve Into Zelda Lore That Fans Have Been Wondering About
Nintendo is billing Switch 2’s upcoming Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment as “the story leading into The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom,” giving players the chance to participate in the Imprisoning War that occurred during Hyrule’s ancient past. According to developer Koei Tecmo, the game will also delve further into the lore and characters from this mysterious time *******.
“This game takes place during the Imprisoning War, which is shown in fragments in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom,” Koei Tecmo’s Yosuke Hayashi said during Nintendo’s latest Creator’s Voice video. “In this Hyrule Warriors game, you’ll see how the people of Hyrule contended with the threat of the original Ganondorf.”
Though the war is the focal point of the story, Age of Imprisonment will also offer a deeper look at Hyrule itself. “As a story that you can only fully experience here, it doesn’t just depict the battles of the Imprisoning War via a Warriors game. It also shows life in the kingdom of Hyrule after Princess Zelda is sent back in time,” Koei Tecmo producer Ryota Matsushita explained.
Moreover, the game will shed light on some mysterious characters from this time *******. As previously confirmed, King Rauru and Mineru will both be playable characters, but Matsushita teases that players will “also get to know the four masked sages from The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.”
Like previous Warriors games, Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment is a large-scale action game that pits players against hundreds of enemies at a time, with more appearing on the battlefield than before thanks to Switch 2’s added horsepower. “Nintendo Switch 2 has made it possible to include lots of enemies in our Warriors games,” Matsushita explained.
“At the same time, it was also important that you could play with higher frame rates than the Nintendo Switch system. We were able to achieve that with this game,” Hayashi added.
Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment is slated to arrive “this winter,” while the Switch 2 itself will launch on June 5 for $450. Nintendo is also offering a limited-time Mario Kart World bundle for $500, but this will only be available through Fall 2025.

2 Reasons Netflix’s 40% Rally Is Far From Over
2 Reasons Netflix’s 40% Rally Is Far From Over
Shares of Netflix Inc. (NASDAQ:) have been on an absolute tear in recent weeks. They’re now up more than 40% since the first week of April, breaking through previous records and entering the rarefied four-figure price range.
While that kind of move tends to raise concerns about overheating, especially with the RSI now at 68, there are still two major reasons to believe the rally could continue into the summer, and why any pullback should be viewed as a buying opportunity.
1. Fundamentals Are Red Hot
Netflix’s latest earnings release firmly put its growth story in the spotlight. The company reported first-quarter earnings and revenue that came in well ahead of expectations, with the latter up 12.5% year-over-year.
But what stood out most were the operating metrics. Operating income climbed 27%, while operating margin reached 32%, up from 28% a year earlier. Management also guided to even stronger profitability, forecasting a 33% margin for Q2 and reaffirming their full-year target of 29%.
The top-line outlook was also upgraded. Netflix now expects full-year revenue between $43.5 billion and $44.5 billion, up from previous guidance and above consensus estimates.
This reflects not only price increases and membership growth but also a sharp uptick in ad revenue, which the company says will roughly double in 2025.
Subscriber growth was another standout. Netflix added 18.91 million net new subscribers in the quarter, blowing away expectations of 9.18 million. It was the highest quarterly net addition in company history, showing the platform is still gaining traction despite rising competition and market maturity.
2. Wall Street Is Getting Louder
Following that blowout report, analysts have begun to revise their targets higher. Last week, Wolfe Research reiterated its bullish stance and issued a new price target of $1,340. This echoed the call from Robert Baird who lifted its target to $1,300, while Canaccord Genuity Group went even further, calling for $1,380.
Those targets imply more than 15% upside from where the stock closed on Monday. That’s a significant projection for a company of Netflix’s size, especially after such a strong run. It also shows that many believe this is not the top but rather a new baseline from which the next leg higher can form.
These bullish forecasts are backed by Netflix’s ability to monetize its subscriber base through pricing, premium content, and a fast-growing ad business. With record subscriber growth and rising profitability, the company is executing at a level few of the tech giants can match.
Why One Major Firm Just Turned Cautious
Even with Netflix firing on all cylinders, some analysts are beginning to voice caution, not about the business, but the stock’s near-term setup. On Monday, J.P. Morgan downgraded Netflix to Neutral from Overweight, citing a more balanced risk/reward profile following the stock’s significant rally.
With shares hitting all-time highs and trading at roughly 39x 2026 earnings and 44x free cash flow, the valuation has started to limit the upside in the short term.
The firm still sees Netflix as a long-term leader in global streaming, driven by top-tier content, accelerating profitability, and a dominant position in the shift away from linear TV.
But with macro conditions improving and market risk appetite broadening, the team there expects some capital rotation away from defensive names like Netflix toward more beaten-down sectors.
What to Watch in the Weeks Ahead
They also noted that following recent events like the company’s Upfront presentation, Netflix may face a quieter ******* on the catalyst front as it heads into summer, even with strong Q3 content on deck.
Still, the structural bull case remains intact. Netflix’s ability to scale globally, grow advertising revenue, and retain its content advantage means pullbacks should be seen in context: as a natural pause in a longer-term uptrend, not a reversal.

Trump announces $25 billion and architectural design for “Golden Dome” missile defense system
Trump announces $25 billion and architectural design for “Golden Dome” missile defense system
Washington — President Trump on Tuesday announced his administration has selected the architectural design for a “Golden Dome” missile defense system to protect the United States from foreign threats.
The president also said the budget package Republicans are currently ironing out on Capitol Hill will include an initial $25 billion to begin construction on the missile defense system. Mr. Trump said the project’s total cost will be about $175 billion, although it could be much more. Congress hasn’t yet funded any of the project, although Mr. Trump told reporters he thinks it’ll be easy to fund on Capitol Hill.
“Today, I’m pleased to announce that we have officially selected an architecture for this state-of-the-art system that will deploy next-generation technologies across the land, sea and space, including space-based sensors and interceptors,” the president announced in the Oval Office alongside Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.
President Trump speaks alongside Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth in the Oval Office at the White House on May 20, 2025, in Washington, D.C. Mr. Trump announced his plans for the Golden Dome, a national ballistic and cruise missile defense system.
Getty Images
Mr. Trump said the project should be “fully operational before the end of my term,” which would be before January 2028. The president said the system will be built in states including Alaska, Florida, Georgia and Indiana, and involve multiple, yet-to-be-selected American defense and technology companies.
Canada wants to be involved in the project, the president said, adding that the U.S. wants to help Canada as it can.
“Once fully constructed, the Golden Dome will be capable of intercepting missiles even if they are launched from other sides of the world and even if they are launched from space,” he said. “And we will have the best system ever built.”
The president told reporters that he suggested a comprehensive new missile defense system to U.S. military leaders, and they agreed, not the other way around.
“I suggested it and they all said, ‘We love the idea, sir.’ That’s the way it’s gotta be, right? But they want it. And they wanted it badly once it was suggested.”
The president has for months expressed a desire for a defense system like Israel’s. In his March joint address to Congress, the president requested funding for the system.
“I’m asking Congress to fund a state-of-the-art Golden Dome shield to protect our homeland,” the president said in his address to Congress. “All made in the USA. Ronald Reagan wanted to do it long ago, but the technology wasn’t there, not even close. But now we have the technology. It’s incredible, actually. And other places have it. Israel has it, other places have it, and the United States should have it too.”
A new, unclassified assessment from the Pentagon’s intelligence agency shows what threats the U.S. needs to defend itself from in the next decade.
The Defense Intelligence Agency, or DIA, expects that missile threats to the U.S. will expand both in scale and sophistication, as the U.S. faces threats from foreign actors in the shape of intercontinental ballistic missiles, submarine-launched ballistic missiles, two types of hypersonic weapons, land attack cruise missiles, and fractional orbital bombardment systems.
Mr. Trump wants a “Golden Dome” in the vein of Israel’s Iron Dome, the country’s mobile all-weather air defense system that has intercepted projectiles since its installation in 2011. However, Israel’s Iron Dome largely defends against shorter-range threats, like rockets, while it has two other air defense systems to defend against missiles, which are increasingly being used in conflict.
“Missile threats to the U.S. homeland will expand in scale and sophistication in the coming decade,” the assessment says. “China and Russia are developing an array of novel delivery systems to exploit gaps in the current U.S. ballistic missile defenses, but traditional ballistic missiles — which are guided during powered flight and unguided during free flight — will remain the primary threat to the homeland. North Korea has successfully tested ballistic missiles with sufficient range to reach the entire homeland, and Iran has space launch vehicles it could use to develop a military-viable ICBM by 2035, should Tehran decide to pursue the capability.”
The assessment warns that China, Iran and North Korea will have significantly more intercontinental ballistic missiles by 2035, and “there is no part of the homeland which cannot be struck by existing ICBMs.” Although Iran doesn’t currently have known ICBMs, the DIA assessment suggests it will have 60 by 2035. Keeping Iran from becoming a nuclear power has been a key goal of the U.S. and its allies.
The assessment also warns that China’s submarine-launched ballistic missiles will increase in number by 2035, and “there is no part of the homeland which cannot be struck by existing adversary SLBMs.” Russia, too, has submarine-launched ballistic missiles.
Further, the assessment warns that both China and Russia will increase their boosted hypersonic weapons multiple times over by 2035. The report says that Russia and China can reach parts of the U.S. with these systems. The report also says China and Russia’s land attack cruise missile capacity will significantly increase by 2035, and both countries have the potential to reach parts of the U.S.
Finally, the report says both Russia and China are expected to have what’s known as fractional orbital bombardment systems by 2035. These will be able to orbit the globe, traveling over the South Pole to avoid early detection.

Alina Habba targeted Democrats when she became New Jersey’s top prosecutor. Now she’s following through.
Alina Habba targeted Democrats when she became New Jersey’s top prosecutor. Now she’s following through.
From the moment she was named New Jersey’s interim U.S. Attorney, Alina Habba made it clear she would use the office as a political bludgeon.
Just before her March swearing-in, Habba talked to a far-right activist about turning “New Jersey red,” announced investigations into its Democratic governor and attorney general over immigration, called out Sen. Cory Booker’s hometown of Newark for crime and said “I’m looking at you, Paterson” over the city’s immigration policies.
Habba, who had no prosecutorial experience but represented President Donald Trump in three civil trials in recent years, found an opening this month to make her mark, when three Democratic House members and a progressive mayor running for governor showed up to inspect a migrant detention center in Newark.
Habba initially charged Newark Mayor Ras Baraka with trespass despite his compliance with federal agents’ demands to leave the Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility’s fenced-in area. She dropped the misdemeanor charge this week but escalated the May 9 dispute by charging Democratic Rep. LaMonica McIver with felony assault on law enforcement in the scuffle that ensued while they arrested Baraka.
Habba’s decision drew plaudits on the right and protests from Democrats that she had crossed a “red line,” with New Jersey Rep. Frank Pallone going as far as to liken her behavior to a “fascist regime.”
It wouldn’t be the first time New Jersey’s U.S. Attorney’s Office has been tainted by politics. Habba’s predecessor Phil Sellinger testified in the corruption trial of Democratic former Sen. Bob Menendez, who had wanted Sellinger to go easy in a bank fraud case against a developer friend, Fred Daibes, who would later become his codefendant. Former Gov. Chris Christie, who also had no prosecutorial experience when he became U.S. attorney, built his political career as an anti-corruption crusader in the office, often targeting Democrats.
“Chris Christie used that office brilliantly for his own political purposes, but he didn’t come at it with a meat cleaver the way she’s approaching it,” said Gerry Krovatin, a prominent New Jersey defense lawyer and Democrat who has often represented clients prosecuted by the New Jersey U.S. attorney’s office.
Few expect Habba to remain in the job once her 120-day interim appointment expires. She hasn’t been formally nominated, and even if she is, New Jersey’s Democratic senators don’t look inclined to allow the nomination to proceed. Many in New Jersey’s legal community doubt that the state’s district court judges, who can appoint a U.S. attorney if the interim appointment expires, would vote to keep Habba in the role. A spokesperson for the New Jersey U.S. Attorney’s Office did not respond to an email seeking comment.
Habba has been floated as a potential challenger to Booker in 2026, and as a potential Fox News host. For now, New Jersey Democrats are wondering how much damage she can do in her four months on the job.
“I’m fighting with a lot of people about being scared and being afraid to speak out,” said attorney Nancy Erika Smith, a Democrat. “There’s fear out there.”
Smith played a role in Habba’s first New Jersey scandal, when she represented a 21-year-old former server at Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster. The server, Alice Bianco, claimed that Habba befriended her in 2021 when Bianco was planning to file a ******* harassment suit against the club, encouraged her to fire her lawyer and convinced her to sign a non-disclsoure agreement in exchange for $15,000. (The club and Habba both settled with Bianco).
Smith suggested Habba’s work on Bianco helped her cozy up to Trump, since she began representing him in a defamation case just weeks after Bianco signed the non-disclosure agreement, which is ******** in New Jersey.
“It’s red meat for the Fox News base that’s all she cares about,” Smith said. “She doesn’t care about law, she doesn’t care about ethics.”
Habba, 41, described herself at the Republican National Convention last year as a “feisty Jersey girl” and a first-generation Arab-American who is a devout Catholic. Her parents fled Iraq in the 1980s. Before college, she attended a private girls’ school in New Jersey and her LinkedIn page says she attended Lehigh University and then Widener University Commonwealth Law School in Pennsylvania. After law school, she clerked for state court Judge Eugene Codey.
Attorney General Pam Bondi appointed Habba to the office in March, a month after Trump’s expected pick for U.S. attorney, state Sen. Doug Steinhardt, withdrew himself from the running because he was not certain he would win confirmation.
Just days into her tenure, New Jersey’s legal community began raising alarms. Forty-two law professors at Seton Hall and Rutgers in an open letter published in the New Jersey Law Journal on April 2 called her “fundamentally unqualified” and said her public statements “show a lack of respect for the integrity and impartiality that is at the core of the Department of Justice.”
“The judges of the District Court should exercise the power entrusted to them by statute — they should refuse to rubber stamp an unqualified interim appointee and instead appoint a qualified U.S. attorney to lead federal law enforcement in New Jersey,” the professors wrote.
Five days after taking office, Habba, outfitted in a bulletproof vest, attended a raid in Newark, personally escorting some of the defendants to law-enforcement vehicles after they had been handcuffed. The move raised eyebrows in the legal community, both because it is highly unusual for a U.S. attorney to attend an arrest and because her presence could have legal consequences.
“All in all, it’s probably better if our prosecutorial chiefs do not do that just for appearances sake,” said Stephen Gillers, a professor at New York University law school who specializes in legal ethics. He added that “as U.S. attorney, her conduct in the field may be subject to investigation or challenge by the defense lawyers, and it’s best to avoid that if possible.”
As Trump’s lawyer, Habba repeatedly drew the ire of judges before whom she appeared. In Trump’s civil fraud trial against the New York Attorney General’s office, she complained in court about “eye rolls and constant whispering” from the judge’s principal law clerk. It was one of the actions that prompted the judge, Justice Arthur Engoron, to issue a gag order preventing Trump’s attorneys from making public remarks about communications between Engoron and his staff.
Engoron eventually fined Habba and four other Trump attorneys $7,500 each for repeating legal arguments that had previously failed and had been deemed “borderline frivolous.” (The attorneys are appealing those fines along with the judgment against Trump and his adult sons.)
In Trump’s second trial against E. Jean Carroll, Habba attempted to use a slide in her closing argument that included material she hadn’t entered as evidence. U.S. District Judge Lewis Kaplan threatened to detain her. “You are on the verge of spending some time in the lockup,” he told her. “Now, sit down,” he said angrily.
U.S. District Court Judge Donald Middlebrooks fined Habba and Trump nearly $1 million in sanctions for filing a lawsuit against Hillary Clinton and dozens of former Justice Department and FBI officials that the judge called “completely frivolous, both factually and legally, and which was brought in bad faith for an improper purpose.”
Still, she has won praise from some lawyers who have worked with her. “Alina is an incredibly talented lawyer who has proven to be both fearless and loyal, two important characteristics to the president,” said Joe Tacopina, who represented Trump alongside Habba during the first Carroll trial.
State Sen. Joe Pennacchio, a Republican who was New Jersey co-chair of Trump’s 2016 and 2020 campaigns, said Habba “did try to temper” her actions by dropping the charges against Baraka.
“They’ve got to draw some type of line in the sand in some way,” Pennacchio said. “No one’s going to jail for this, but it’s going to be a little more of a hassle that [McIver] is going to have to defend herself and explain what she did.”
But keeping politics out of her day job appears to be somewhat of an ongoing challenge for the first-time prosecutor. In an interview with far-right activist Jack Posobiec just before she took office, Habba suggested New Jersey could swing Republican.
“We could turn New Jersey red. I really do believe that,” Habba said. “Hopefully while I’m there I can help that cause. I’m not a political person in that role, but the one thing I just want to do is make it safer.”
A partisan office could present problems for prosecutors, police and, Habba’s critics warn, the public.
New Jersey Attorney General Matt Platkin, who was appointed to the post by Democratic Gov. Phil Murphy and who Habba said she is investigating, said in a recent interview with MSNBC that Habba’s office has had “no interest” in working with the state on joint law enforcement activities and warned of the risks. “We saw what happens in 9/11 when law enforcement agencies aren’t communicating,” Platkin said.

WHO says vaccine-derived poliovirus detected in PNG
WHO says vaccine-derived poliovirus detected in PNG
The World Health Organisation says circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus type 2 has been detected in stool specimens of two healthy children in Papua New Guinea on May 9.
The detection of wild poliovirus or vaccine-derived poliovirus, including from samples taken from healthy children, is considered a serious public health event, the WHO said in a statement.
It added that the detection of circulating type 2 poliovirus was classified as a “polio outbreak”.
Wild polio is only endemic in Pakistan and Afghanistan but vaccine-derived polio continues to cause outbreaks in a wider range of countries.
For example, this year, countries including Nigeria and Ethiopia, among others, have reported tens of cases of paralysis caused by polio.
This is the first polio outbreak in Papua New Guinea since 2018 when an outbreak was reported in the same area as the new detections, Lae city in Morobe province.
Vaccination protects against all forms of polio but coverage rates in Papua New Guinea are only about 44 per cent for the third dose needed for protection, the WHO said.
Efforts are underway to detect further transmission and boost vaccination coverage in the affected area.
Poliomyelitis, which is spread mainly through the faecal-oral route, is a highly infectious virus that can invade the nervous system and cause paralysis and death in young children, with those under two years old most at risk.
In nearly all cases it has no symptoms, making it hard to detect.

Palantir Stock Pops — Are Analysts Resetting the Floor?
Palantir Stock Pops — Are Analysts Resetting the Floor?
Palantir Technologies Inc (NASDAQ:). continues to defy expectations. The polarizing technology stock is up approximately 8.5% since May 12. Some of the bullish sentiment came from the tariff pause between the United States and China that lifted all technology stocks.
However, PLTR stock received a separate catalyst when Bank of America raised its price target to $150 from $125.
Analysts increasing their price targets for Palantir isn’t a new story. However, the Bank of America news is the latest in a series of increased price targets since Palantir reported earnings on May 5.
That means the floor for Palantir stock is moving higher, even as institutional investment is still catching up to the price targets.
Palantir’s Ontology Helps Companies Map Their Data
By itself, saying that Palantir’s ontology helps a company map its data may seem like a “so what” argument. However, company data is often messy and in 2025, the volume of data being created is growing exponentially every day.
Not only is the volume of data impossible to comb through efficiently, but you’re also dealing with different areas of the company with different access and permissions. Palantir’s ontology breaks through those barriers to allow AI agents to do their work. Keep that last part in mind. Palantir doesn’t replace AI. It’s helping make AI work the way organizations need it to work.
The reason this is important goes directly to why Bank of America raised its price target for Palantir stock. In lifting its target, the analyst noted, “While there’s some value for general tools, we continue to remind investors Palantir’s value is creating outcome-focused bespoke AI-enabled products, at scale…We see PLTR as the market definer for organizations leveraging AI to drive accelerated tangible results.”
Institutional Investors Are Still Catching Up to PLTR Stock
In the past nine months, Palantir has been added to the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq-100. The expectation was that institutional buying would ensue. According to the Institutional Ownership for Palantir stock on MarketBeat, institutional buying heavily outweighed selling in the third quarter of 2024.
However, in the last two quarters, the gap between the buyers and sellers has narrowed. That’s keeping institutional ownership around 45%. That compares favorably to a company like Oracle Corp (NYSE:)., which has about 42% institutional ownership as of this writing. For Palantir, the institutional buying is spread out with Vanguard being the largest institutional shareholder with about 8% of the stock.
That might have investors believing that insiders control much of Palantir’s stock, but that’s not accurate. Insiders only own about 5% of the company’s stock. In fact, the top 25 shareholders in Palantir collectively control less than half of PLTR shares.
That leaves retail investors, who own around 43% of PLTR stock. That doesn’t account for the size of Palantir’s moves, but it reminds us that buyers need sellers, and many retail investors are comfortable hanging on to their shares.
The Tug-of-War Will Continue With PLTR Stock
With over 2.3 billion shares outstanding, there are plenty of Palantir shares that can be bought. However, at around $125 per share, neither retail nor institutional investors have much appetite for chasing the stock.
The bull case is that Palantir continues to attract customers from both the government and commercial sides. Plus, the company has a clear leadership position in AI, which is forming a widening moat.
On the other hand, the bears have the valuation card. It’s not that they don’t believe the company will grow; it’s more a belief that its growth is already priced in, and then some.
That leaves the analysts. Higher price targets continue to raise the floor on PLTR stock. The consensus price was in the $40s a year ago. It was in the high $60s to end 2024. Today, it sits around $83. That still could mean a 33% drop, but shareholders endured that drop at the beginning of this year.
With the company not due to report earnings until August, PLTR stock could chop around this summer. That means macroeconomic news about tariffs and taxes will probably play a larger role in price movement than company-specific news. However, with analyst sentiment on the rise, one or two new contracts could send the stock to new highs.

Scientists warn if a 1,000-ft ‘mega-tsunami’ spurs from an active fault line it could wipe part of America off the map
Scientists warn if a 1,000-ft ‘mega-tsunami’ spurs from an active fault line it could wipe part of America off the map
Scientists are warning that a 1,000-foot-tall “mega tsunami” could potentially wipe a large chunk of America off the map – if a strong enough earthquake hits a specific active fault line over the next 50 years.
Alaska, Hawaii and parts of the mainland America’s West Coast are at risk if an earthquake erupts along the Cascadia subduction zone, a fault stretching from Northern Vancouver Island to Cape Mendocino, California.
A recent study by Virginia Tech geoscientists published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences estimates that there’s a 15 percent chance of a magnitude 8.0 earthquake hitting the region within the next 50 years.
That quake, which would potentially flush away cities like Seattle and Portland, Oregon, could also sink coastal land by as much as 6.5 feet, according to the findings.
A ‘mega-tsunami’ could potentially wipe out a large chunk of America if a strong enough earthquake hits a specific active fault line, scientist say. (AFP via Getty Images)
Seattle (pictured) and Portland, Oregon, are two of the cities that could be wiped off the map if a 1,000-foot tsunami hits. (Getty Images)
In that instance, the mega tsunami’s waves could reach up to 1,000 feet, putting millions of Americans at new risk.
While ordinary tsunamis produce waves standing a few feet tall, mega-tsunamis are characterized by extreme height, with waves often stretching hundreds of feet into the air. Unlike gradual climate-driven events, this potential earthquake would “happen within minutes, leaving no time for adaptation or mitigation,” the scientists warned.
“The expansion of the coastal floodplain following a Cascadia subduction zone earthquake has not been previously quantified, and the impacts to land use could significantly increase the timeline to recovery,” said Tina Dura, lead author of the study and assistant professor in Virginia Tech’s Department of Geosciences.
The new research found the most severe effects would be in southern Washington, northern Oregon and northern California.
Alaska and Hawaii, though further from the fault line, are vulnerable because of their seismic and volcanic profiles.
There also has not been a quake of large seismic magnitude along the Cascadia subduction zone since 1700.
