More About La Horde du Contrevent: The 2004 French Novel That Inspired Clair Obscur: Expedition 33
More About La Horde du Contrevent: The 2004 French Novel That Inspired Clair Obscur: Expedition 33
Most Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 players probably think the game’s expedition concept came from typical JRPG tropes. They’d be wrong. The real inspiration comes from a French novel so “obscure” that it’s never been translated into English.
La Horde du Contrevent by Alain Damasio hit French bookstores in 2004 and became a cult classic. Twenty-one years later, Sandfall Interactive turned its core premise into what is now one of the most celebrated RPGs in recent memory.
The connection runs deeper than surface-level borrowing. This isn’t just about “numbered expeditions”; it’s about existential dread wrapped in beautiful prose.
The novel that nobody outside France knows
Damasio’s masterpiece follows groups of warriors attempting to reach the source of an eternal wind that dominates their world. Every expedition fails. New groups form, push further than their predecessors, then inevitably perish in the attempt.
Sound familiar? That’s because Sandfall Interactive lifted this structure wholesale for Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, and the developers weren’t shy about admitting it either. François Meurisse, the game’s producer, explained the connection to CNET in a recent interview:
About the countdown, I think Guillaume woke up one morning and though that idea could be cool. But the expedition concept, the special inspiration behind it is a French novel called La Horde du Contrevent. It wasn’t translated in other languages, but it’s a cult classic now in French, published in 2004.
The honesty is refreshing. Most developers would dance around their influences or claim everything was original. Meurisse straight-up credits the novel as fundamental to their vision.
He continued by describing what specifically captivated the development team about Damasio’s work:
It’s a great novel about a group of warriors, like an expedition of 20 or 30 people that try to find the origin of the wind in the world, which always blows from west to east.
The parallel structure becomes obvious when laid out this way. Both stories feature large groups with specialized roles attempting to reach an impossible destination. The wind source mirrors The Paintress as an unknowable force that must be confronted.
Every expedition fails, and they send a new one. We loved this idea of like trying to overcome what the best group did before you, trying to find out which point they reached in the world, how they failed and will you succeed?
That cyclical failure concept became the emotional backbone of Clair Obscur. The Paintress erases everyone who reaches age 34, so Expedition 33 represents humanity’s final desperate attempt.
From French literature to gaming excellence
Literary adaptation without the usual Hollywood butchering. | Image Credit: Sandfall Interactive
The adaptation process reveals something fascinating about cross-media inspiration. Damasio’s novel works through internal monologue and poetic description, while video games need action, combat, and player agency. Sandfall Interactive solved this by keeping the emotional core while completely reimagining the mechanics.
The wind becomes The Paintress. The endless journey becomes turn-based combat with real-time defensive elements. What they preserved was the psychological weight—both the novel and game focus on characters who know they’re probably walking toward death but choose hope anyway.
That’s not typical video game storytelling. It’s literary fiction disguised as entertainment, and it works brilliantly because the developers understood what made the source material compelling beyond its surface elements.
The novel’s influence extends beyond plot structure, too. Damasio wrote each character with distinct narrative voices and specialized roles within the group, and Clair Obscur mirrors this with party members who feel genuinely different rather than cosmetically varied.
The untranslated status actually works in the game’s favor—players experience the story fresh without preconceptions about how it “should” be adapted.
What other untranslated novels deserve video game adaptations? Share your thoughts in the comments below!

WAFL 2025: South Fremantle smash Subiaco for biggest loss since 2012 by 103 points
WAFL 2025: South Fremantle smash Subiaco for biggest loss since 2012 by 103 points
South Fremantle have picked the bones of a hapless Subiaco clean in a 103-point mauling at Community Bank Oval on Saturday, the Lions’ largest defeat since 2012.
Trey Ruscoe and Brandon Donaldson outscored the Lions on their own with five and four goals, respectively, while Dylan Main was just one point short of doing the same with three goals in the embarrassing display.
Subiaco barely released a whimper as they were hunted out of the game.
Matt Parker took little notice of the pouring rain, his classy ball use defying an otherwise uninspiring contest as he collected 28 touches.
He also could have had five goals had he kicked straight, but ended with one to complement another from Jake Florenca, who also produced 34 disposals, five tackles and seven clearances.
Henry Berenger was a silver lining for the Lions, stopping Ruscoe kicking any majors for the best part of two and half quarters in the 18.14 (122) to 2.7 (19) smashing.
Half of Ruscoe’s six first-quarter touches came with goals, the electric small forward constantly free inside 50 as the Bulldogs booted the first five majors.
Taj Schofield, who was Subiaco’s best on the day, opened the scoring for WA a week ago and provided the same for the Lions to avoid a goalless first term.

A quarter-time downpour killed any chance of a free-flowing contest, but Subiaco relished the tight spaces, staling South Fremantle’s scoring.
However, they couldn’t deny Parker, who snapped a classy goal on the run just after a miraculous flying shot from the boundary thundered into the post.
The Lions’ lack of method leaving defence left them helpless to the ruthless hunt of the home side who were almost toying with the opposition.
The only thing heavier than the Dogs’ onslaught was the rain, forcing fans to huddle in behind the goals to find cover.
It was more of the same in the second half as Subiaco failed to respond in any meaningful way, inside 50s blowing out to 57-36 in the home team’s favour.
Inaccuracy with a slippery ball was the only barrier to a massacre; the day summed up as the Lions’ late call-up Richard Bartlett was smashed in the face by the ball, stopping a goal after it was soccered by a teammate.
Hamish Free remained a domineering figure in the middle, claiming ascendancy with 60 hitouts in the ruck as well as winning five clearances.

Splitgate 2 Wants To Have Its Own Identity And Prove It’s “Here To Stay”

@InUrFox
What does “putting everywhere” actually mean?
This book has so many pages.
• Xbox was dying in revenue
• Regulators put a 10 year deal on CoD
• Microsoft had to give away the streaming
• Spencer himself only offered 3 yrs initially
And most importantly
• Again, Xbox was dying in revenue
Xbox have the benefit of their actual financial situation giving regulators and courts the impression they release games everywhere, what they actually do.
But for reasons they can’t be proven guilty of anything in court.
I’m not judging, it’s just what it is.
IF the Series generation would have developed differently and was much more successful, I don’t hesitate any second to believe in what Spencer had originally planned to do:
• Make everything Xbox exclusive
• We today know that Spencer had also approached *****, From Software, CD Project, Nintendo, and even Valve was on their list of buyouts.
MS are playing a card here everyone knows why they are doing it.
Putting Doom “everywhere”, which even was it already before it got bought, ain’t a MS thing.
It would had hurt them in many ways if they’d put it exclusively to Xbox.
But, no matter what – it is what it is.
Xbox bought themselves back into the game. And I think many people just don’t have very fond feelings towards this behaviour, wether on corporate nor private levels.
Let’s see how they’ll run with it.
In 2030, but most importantly after regulations will have expired we will learn better.

Lucas magic consigns Penrith to last on ladder
Lucas magic consigns Penrith to last on ladder
Dylan Lucas’ hat-trick has powered Newcastle to a vital 25-6 defeat of four-time reigning premiers Penrith, who slumped back to the bottom of the NRL ladder in Bathurst.
As injuries and State of Origin absences depleted both sides, Lucas showed his credentials as a future NSW player, helping the struggling Knights ease pressure on coach Adam O’Brien with an improved attacking performance.
Fletcher Sharpe excelled replacing Queensland’s Kalyn Ponga at fullback, scoring the Knights’ first try at close range to trigger a 24-0 first-half skirmish.
Sharpe finished with a staggering 18 tackle busts and four line breaks to go with a game-high 272 metres and was the Knights’ best in a more even second half on Saturday night.
Penrith’s five Origin absences notwithstanding, O’Brien may have found the solution to his long-running halves problem as five-eighth Tyson Gamble laid on all three of Lucas’ tries.
Two came from beautiful flat ****** in back-to-back sets before Gamble put boot to ball and helped the second-rower make it a four-score game after 25 minutes.
Lucas could’ve had a fourth try in the shadows of halftime had he not spilt the ball over the tryline with Daine Laurie covering in defence.
Adam Elliott tore a bicep in the first half as the only sour note for Newcastle.
The loss laid bare the mighty task ahead of the Panthers to salvage an already dire campaign in the always-testing Origin *******.
The Panthers mercifully have byes before the final two Origin games but may need to rest players after Origin II given a trip to Auckland three days later.
Goal-line defence was again a major issue for Penrith in the first half, with back-up halfback Brad Schneider targeted by Lucas ahead of his first two tries.
The Panthers are now one point adrift at the bottom of the ladder and could lose prop Liam Henry to suspension for a crusher tackle on Sharpe.
Henry went to the sin bin for the shot in the first half, putting the Knights in position for their fourth try.
Highly-touted forward Harrison Hassett cut through for a try on debut in the second half.
But that was good as things got for Penrith as former Panther Jack Cogger put the cherry on top with a field goal as the last five minutes approached.
Newcastle debutant Paul Bryan dislocated his shoulder in his first minute but played on after having it popped back in.

Antino destroys classy Doomben Cup field in race-record time
Antino destroys classy Doomben Cup field in race-record time
Antino continued his imperious vein of form in the Group 1 $1 million XXXX Doomben Cup (2000m), annihilating his rivals in a four-length romp.
The last into stride, Antino ($3f TABtouch) settled third from the back as invariable pace-maker Pride Of Jenni ($5) adopted her customary role.
Beyond halfway, Pride Of Jenni had opened up by three lengths on Linderman ($10), who in turn held a similar margin over the chasing pack.
Past the 800m, Blake Shinn hooked Antino to the outside to begin his trademark long run and the six-year-old rapidly began to loop the field, making up ground hand over fist.
Despite being four wide, Shinn had a vice-like grip of Antino as he moved past Pride Of Jenni at the 400m like she was stood still.
With Shinn getting stuck-in up the straight, the son of Redwood effortlessly increased his margin with Fawkner Park and Kovalica toiling away to fill the remote placegetter positions.
Gollan, a Toowoomba boy, has won multiple Group 1s and 11 straight Brisbane training premierships but said this horse was a different breed.
“This is a new beast in my career,” he said.
“This has been the best horse I have trained . After winning the Toorak Handicap last year, we have all just gotten better as a team.
“Antino has gone to another level, what we have seen today is pretty special.
“It was a pretty good Doomben Cup field and now we will set our sights on the Cox Plate in the spring.
“His style of racing will suit a Cox Plate where you can build and build into it.
“Sometimes he doesn’t break out of the barriers well, but Blake just lets him get into his stride and he knows when it is time to go.
“I just said to Blake today I couldn’t get him any better and he will do the job for you.
“That’s as good a win as I’ve been involved in.”
Pride Of Jenni’s trainer and record-breaking master Ciaron Maher summed up the performance in a simple quote:
“That was serious, wasn’t it?”
A Brisbane Racing Club promotion meant that free beer was enjoyed by patrons at the meeting thanks to Antino’s win.

Xiaomi Surpasses Apple to Lead Wearables Market in Q1 2025 With 19 Percent Market Share: Canalys
Xiaomi Surpasses Apple to Lead Wearables Market in Q1 2025 With 19 Percent Market Share: Canalys
Xiaomi led the wearable band market in Q1 2025, after refreshing uts Mi Band and Redmi Watch models earlier this year, according to a Canalys report. The Beijing-based technology firm surpassed Apple and regained the top vendor spot, as its shipments saw an annual growth of 44 percent. Huawei, Samsung, and Garmin were in third, fourth and fifth places, respectively. Meanwhile, a new study reveals that customers look for affordability, long battery life, and support for health tracking as the top three features when purchasing a smartwatch.
Xiaomi Regains Top Vendor Spot as Shipments Grew to 8.7 Million Units
Canalys’ latest Wearable Band Analysis report reveals that the global wearable band shipments rose to 46.6 million in Q1 2025, as the market grew 13 percent year-on-year (YoY). Basic wearables saw the highest growth, and Xiaomi shipped the most wearables bands in the first quarter, after launching two new models, the Xiaomi Smart Band 9 and Redmi Band 5. The latter was the company’s best selling wearable device.

Apple and Huawei were in second and third place, respectively. Canalys expects Apple’s market share (presently at 16 percent) to grow in the second half of 2025, as the company is expected to launch it’s 10th anniversary smartwatch in the coming months. Huawei shipments grew 36 percent YoY to 7.1 million units, after its Fit and GT wearable devices performed well.
With a massive 74 percent growth in Q1 2025, Samsung’s shipments in the same ******* grew to 4.9 million units, as the company focused on affordable devices (Galaxy Fit) and premium models (Galaxy Watch) in emerging and affluent markets, respectively.
Garmin nudged its existing user base to upgrade to newer models in a diverse product portfolio in the first quarter, as its shipments rose 10 percent YoY to 1.8 million units, as per the Canalys report. The wearable maker was in fifth place in terms of global shipment market share.
“With hardware profitability under strain, the wearables market is shifting from being hardware-led to ecosystem-driven,” said Cynthia Chen, Research Manager at Omdia-owned Canalys. “Vendors are accelerating platform and service development to boost recurring revenue and user retention.”
A recent consumer survey conducted by Canalys revealed that 18,185 of respondents were concerned about the prices of wearables, while 14,691 people responded saying battery life was an important factor to be considered while purchasing a smartwatch. Health tracking capabilities were the third most important factor for buyers, as per the survey.

Remains of U.S. President James Monroe’s daughter will be reburied beside him
Remains of U.S. President James Monroe’s daughter will be reburied beside him
After two centuries in a neglected European grave, the remains of U.S. President James Monroe’s daughter will be coming home to rest beside her father in Richmond.
The Catholic Diocese of Richmond announced May 23 that the body of Eliza Monroe Hay had arrived two days earlier at Washington Dulles International Airport. Plans to reinter her near Monroe’s crypt at Richmond’s Hollywood Cemetery have not been finalized, but the diocese said it will take place this fall.
The discovery of Monroe Hay’s grave in Paris’ Père Lachaise Cemetery was the culmination of the Bringing Eliza Home Project, an effort led by Barbara Vorndick of Fluvanna County and a member of the diocese. Vorndick spent six years combing through historical records and finally discovered documents mapping Monroe Hay’s grave in Paris.
In a statement issued by the diocese, Vorndick called the project a “fascinating, enriching journey.” She credited her faith for guiding her, adding that it was after sending emails to France that a parish archivist there found a document of Monroe Hay’s ******** Mass.
“Through the long hours and years of research, I came to feel God’s presence in a very real way,” Vorndick said in the statement. “When I wondered if I would ever find the documents that I needed, He was there, whispering in my ear – suddenly dropping ideas into my mind.”
Who was Eliza Monroe Hay?
Eliza Monroe Hay, who lived from 1786 until 1840, served as White House hostess in place of her ill mother< Elizabeth Monroe. James Monroe, a Virginia native and the nation’s fifth president, served two terms from 1817 to 1825 and is best known for his “Monroe Doctrine” that closed off the Western Hemisphere to European colonization.
Eliza Monroe Hay
James Monroe
The family spent many years in France when Monroe was the American minister to France during the French Revolution.
After her husband’s and mother’s deaths two days apart in 1830, and her father’s death the following year, Monroe Hay moved back to France. According to the 2013 book, “First Ladies’ Fact Book” by Laura Ross and Bill Harris, Monroe Hay converted to Catholicism and lived in a convent until her death.
The true story of Memorial Day’s local origins
Not the first Monroe to be reburied in Richmond
The reinternment of Monroe Hay’s remains to Richmond is not the first reburial in the Monroe family.
After his death in 1831 in New York City, James Monroe was originally buried in New York’s Marble Cemetery. Twenty-seven years later, in 1858, his body was exhumed and brought to Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond and is part of what is now known as President’s Circle because four years later, John Tyler, the nation’s 10th president was buried next to him.
Monroe’s tomb is recognizable for the Gothic Revival-style cast-iron cage that encloses his sarcophagus.

Russia launches major aerial attack on Ukraine capital
Russia launches major aerial attack on Ukraine capital
At least 14 people have been injured in a major Russian missile and drone attack on Kyiv, city authorities say.
Russia launched 250 drones and 14 ballistic missiles against Kyiv, Ukraine’s air force said, causing fires in residential buildings. It was one of the biggest combined aerial assaults on the city since the war began. The air force said it had downed six missiles and 245 drones.
“With each such attack, the world becomes more certain that the cause of prolonging the war lies in Moscow,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on X.
The barrage came hours after Russia and Ukraine took part in a prisoner swap agreed after talks between the two countries’ officials in Turkey.
Describing a “difficult night”, Zelensky said there had been fires and explosions across Kyiv with homes, businesses and cars damaged by strikes or falling debris.
Olha Chyrukha, a 64-year-old local resident who lives just outside central Kyiv, told Reuters news agency: “I wish they’d agree to a ceasefire. To bomb people like this – poor children. My three-year-old granddaughter was screaming scared.”
Zelensky said only “additional sanctions targeting key sectors of the Russian economy” could push Moscow to agree to a ceasefire.
Last week, Russia said Ukraine had launched hundreds of exploding drones at the country, including strikes over Moscow. The Russia’s Ministry of Defence said that 485 drones had been shot down.

Lions roar back into form, finally beat bogey team
Lions roar back into form, finally beat bogey team
The Brisbane Lions have shaken off a two-week form slump, downing Hawthorn by 33 points at the MCG to end a five-game losing streak against the Hawks.
After drawing against North Melbourne, then suffering a Gabba upset to Melbourne last week, the reigning AFL premiers travelled to Melbourne as underdogs.
But Brisbane turned the tables on the Hawks, a scintillating four-goal run late in the second quarter setting up the 14.9 (93) to 8.12 (60) win in front of 57,199 fans.
It was the Lions’ first win over Hawthorn since 2019, having lost every game across the past five years even though they had been strong favourites.
It was fitting in Sir Doug Nicholls Round that Callum Ah Chee should star and Charlie Cameron awoke from his season-long slumber.
Ah Chee was the best forward on the ground, kicking four goals and limiting the influence of Hawthorn captain James Sicily as an intercepting defender.
After entering the match with 8.15 this year, Cameron set the MCG alight with three goals in three minutes late in the second quarter.
Scores were level until Cameron put through his first at the 22-minute mark, slotting two more goals in quick succession, which included a dance celebration for his second.
A Levi Ashcroft major gave the Lions a 23-point halftime lead they would never relinquish.
Hawthorn had patches in the third quarter when they threatened to get back in the game, but the Lions sealed the match with the first three goals of the final term.
Once a bogey venue for Brisbane, the Lions have now won five of their past six games at the MCG, including last year’s preliminary and grand finals.
It was the first time the Lions have beaten Hawthorn at the MCG since 2004.
Hawthorn were badly beaten in the midfield, as Lachie Neale and Will Ashcroft combined superbly, as they did on grand final day last year.
Livewire forward Connor Macdonald was clearly the Hawks’ most influential player, booting three first-half goals.
Brisbane will head home and have just five days before they host Essendon at the Gabba on Thursday night.
The Hawks face another huge test on Friday night when they face premiership favourites Collingwood at the MCG.
