Amid ‘Jensanity’, Nvidia signals plans to keep AI crown
By Max A. Cherney and Wen-Yee Lee
TAIPEI (Reuters) -Nvidia (NVDA) CEO Jensen Huang flew out of Taipei on Friday after a week revelling in the adoration of Taiwan’s tech industry, and delivering a subtle but crucial message from the U.S. AI chip king on how it plans to keep its crown.
While ‘Jensanity’ swirled around Huang at the Computex trade fair, Nvidia itself was at a crossroads. Having grown to become the world’s most valuable chip company, investors fear a drop in spending on artificial intelligence infrastructure as well as damage to sales from U.S. trade friction.
U.S. restrictions on high-tech exports have seen Nvidia lose market share in China as it withdraws chips and designs inferior alternatives compliant with evolving U.S. policy.
Now, cloud computing giants such as Microsoft (MSFT) and Alphabet’s Google (GOOG) have signalled cuts to AI spending. And while the 62-year old CEO has in the past month announced deals worth hundreds of billions of dollars in regions such as the Gulf, analysts said such deals are likely to become scarce.
“Is every country going to announce a $10 billion or $50 billion data centre like the Saudis? Of course not,” said Seaport Research analyst Jay Goldberg. “They’re sort of running out of obvious deals.”
When asked by Reuters how Nvidia planned to deal with AI spending slowdown, Huang said, “AI infrastructure is being built out (everywhere) – that’s one of the reasons I’m travelling around the world… AI infrastructure is going to be a part of society.”
At Computex, Huang revealed a means of growth that does not rely on mega sovereign infrastructure arrangements: new technology that expands Nvidia’s grip on the AI market.
The tech’s centrepiece is called NVLink Fusion. It allows companies to plug custom chips into Nvidia’s AI infrastructure, thereby becoming a platform upon which others can build.
“Instead of having to build the entire rack of equipment themselves, (companies) could innovate or differentiate on the custom (chip) itself,” said Nick Kucharewski, vice president at Marvell Technology.
The bet is that drawing companies to build hardware that utilises Nvidia’s Fusion platform will drive demand for the underlying AI network and data centre parts that Nvidia sells.
Nvidia has also begun to reach into the enterprise market. This week, it launched a line of servers that Huang described as an “enterprise AI supercomputer”.
Huang’s pitch was that the servers open up a multi-billion dollar market because customers can use them for “everything”, such as graphics, virtual machines and AI applications.
Story Continues
The enterprise market is large but difficult to break into, said Seaport Research’s Goldberg. Deals tend to be small – compared with a sovereign data centre – and more expensive and time-consuming to win.
“My sense is we’re sort of bumping up against the limits of expanding the customer base,” Goldberg said.
Nvidia works with some of Taiwan’s biggest names in tech, such as Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co, which makes many of its chips. However, the underlying infrastructure for AI would not be possible without the hundreds of Taiwanese companies big and small supplying components and manufacturing know-how needed to construct Nvidia’s complex AI systems.
“The purpose of Computex was to bring together the ecosystem and the supply chain,” said Ian Cutress, chief analyst at consultancy More Than Moore.
Such a network is necessary to support the deals announced in the Gulf and that are likely coming elsewhere in the world in the coming months, Cutress said.
Taiwanese industry has embraced Huang, who is perceived as a local-born hero hailing from Taiwan’s historic capital of Tainan before migrating to the U.S. when he was nine years old.
By the time he flew out on Friday, Huang had appeared on stage or at banquets with nearly every prominent Taiwanese tech executive, including Chairman Young Liu of AI server builder Foxconn who called him the “leader of Team Taiwan”.
MediaTek CEO Rick Tsai gave Huang chunks of guava in a plastic bag from the Nvidia leader’s favoured fruit stall in Taipei during one of the chip designer’s events.
Solomon Technology, a provider of industrial automation and AI-based inspection solutions which uses Nvidia’s software tools, said working with Nvidia is a win-win situation.
Shares of Solomon have surged 241% since Huang mentioned the firm at Nvidia’s GPU Technology Conference in March last year.
“The collaboration with Nvidia has given us greater visibility. We weren’t very well-known before, but with Nvidia’s support, many more people know us now,” said Solomon Chairman Johnny Chen.

Zoe Daniel requests recount after losing tight race in Goldstein
Zoe Daniel is calling for a recount after losing the Melbourne seat of Goldstein to Liberal moderate Tim Wilson by just 260 votes.
The *********** Electoral Commission confirmed on Saturday the count had been finalised.
But the Teal independent said there “several errors”.

“In light of the very tight margin and several errors picked up in the portion of the count that was included in the distribution of preferences, leading to unusual fluctuations and large numbers of votes moving to and fro in the final stages of the count, I have taken expert advice and asked the AEC to consider whether a full recount is appropriate,” Ms Daniel said in a statement.
“There are also several outstanding questions regarding the broader count which would be resolved by a recount.
“As always, I will respect the process and await the commission’s decision.”
Confirming the results, the AEC said it was considering a recount and “an announcement regarding that decision will be made when able”.
Ms Daniel, who was a journalist for three decades before entering politics, unseated Mr Wilson in 2022, dealing a blow to the Liberal Party’s moderate ranks.
Mr Wilson has pushed back against Ms Daniel’s complaint, saying on Sunday the “AEC has been very thorough”.

“The count has gone on for 3 weeks, Liberal & Teal scrutineers observed the process, votes were counted multiple times, our margin hasn’t dropped below 100 once in majority,” he wrote on social media.
“Our 260 margin nearly doubles an imaginary 140 auto recount threshold.”
He said the issues Ms Daniel identified had been “identified & addressed” by “Liberal & Teal scrutineers”.
“I respected the AEC’s decision, even when it was not in my favour,” Mr Wilson said.
“Those votes were counted again. The discrepancies were identified and reconciled.
“That is why we have so much faith in the AEC’s thoroughness. The margin settled at 260 in my favour.”
He added that he had “lived political grief”.
“I have empathy for how hard it is,” Mr Wilson said.
“But one of the best things I did after the 2022 election was get to ‘acceptance’ quickly in the interests of the voters, my volunteers, and myself.
“Thank you to the AEC staff, Liberal & Teal scrutineers, all the volunteers who have helped on this campaign, and the people of Goldstein.
“I wish Zoe Daniel, her family and staff well in their next chapter.”

SpaceX finally reveals why its Starship Flight 8 Ship exploded, failure traced to ‘flash’ in rocket’s engines

As SpaceX gears up for the ninth test flight of its super-heavy Starship launch vehicle, the company has released findings from its investigation into the explosion of the rocket’s upper stage, referred to as “ship”, during its eighth test flight in March.
Flight 8 launched March 6 from SpaceX’s Starbase manufacturing and test facility on the southern tip of Texas. The mission largely mirrored that of Flight 7, during which the both vehicles’ first stage Super Heavy boosters successfully rocketed back to Starbase to be caught by the launch tower’s “Mechazilla” chopstick-like arms. Ship, however, for both Flight 7 and Flight 8, did not fare as well as its Super Heavy counterpart. (Starship Flight 9 is scheduled to launch on May 27.)
Flight 7 and Flight 8 each ended in dramatic explosions over the Atlantic Ocean that could be seen from Florida, the Bahamas and Turks and Caicos, raining fiery Starship debris into the drink below. Flight 7’s Ship encountered a propellant leak and fire in the spacecraft’s “attic,” leading to its explosion and loss. Side-by-side, Flight 8 followed a very similar trajectory, but instead of a fire in the attic, Starship’s last flight suffered a “flash” in what could be comparatively called its “basement,” which brought about its blazing demise.
In this case, “basement” is Ship’s business end with six powerful Raptor rocket engines. The flight plan for Starship’s eighth launch called for Ship to deploy four ****** payloads simulating SpaceX Starlink satellites about 17.5 minutes after liftoff, followed by a controlled splashdown in the Indian Ocean off of Western Australia roughly 50 minutes later. But it never got the chance to do either, and now we know why.
A “flash” occurred near one of Ship’s center, sea-level Raptor engines, followed by an “energetic event” that led to that engine’s shutdown, SpaceX said in an update. The two remaining sea-level Raptors immediately terminated their thrust, as well as one of Ship’s vacuum-optimized Raptor engines, causing the vehicle to begin tumbling out of control.

About two minutes after the initial flash, SpaceX lost communication with the vehicle, which triggered the spacecraft’s automated flight termination software and subsequent self-destruct.
“The most probable root cause for the loss of Starship was identified as a hardware failure in one of the upper stage’s center Raptor engines that resulted in inadvertent propellant mixing and ignition,” SpaceX wrote.
Super Heavy, too, though successfully returned to Starbase and the warm embrace of “Mechazilla,” didn’t do so without incident. Only 11 of the Flight 8 booster’s 13 engines used for its initial boostback burn were successful in reigniting. Its landing burn as it approached the launch tower saw 12 of 13 engines relight, including one of the previously unlit engines from the boostback burn.
SpaceX traced the cause to “torch ignition issues” on each of the malfunctioning engines, as a result of “thermal conditions local to the igniter,” the company said. To mitigate these overheating issues on Starship’s upcoming flight, SpaceX says they have reinforced the affected areas with additional insulation.

Fixes for Starship’s upper stage came down to tightening some bolts at some of Ship’s more critical junctures and improving the plumbing so flammable gases don’t ignite when they aren’t supposed to:
“Starship’s upper stage will receive additional preload on key joints, a new nitrogen purge system, and improvements to the propellant drain system. Future upgrades to Starship will introduce the Raptor 3 engine which will include additional reliability improvements to address the failure mechanism.”
SpaceX says their investigation included more than 100 long-duration test firings of the Raptor engine at the company’s McGregor, Texas, test facility, and that its efforts were overseen by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), in conjunction with NASA, the National Transportation and Safety Board and the U.S. Space Force. Now, the FAA agrees Starship is ready to fly again.
In a statement released May 22, the FAA says they, “conducted a comprehensive safety review of the SpaceX Starship Flight 8 mishap and determined that the company has satisfactorily addressed the causes of the mishap, and therefore, the Starship vehicle can return to flight.”
The same day SpaceX released their Flight 8 investigation results, the company also officially announced the date for Flight 9. Starship’s next launch is scheduled for no earlier than Tuesday, May 27, and will be the first launch of a flight-proven Super Heavy booster. Flight 9 will liftoff on the same first stage that supported Starship Flight 7, during a launch window that opens at 7:30 p.m. EDT (2330 GMT).
SpaceX will stream the mission live on their website, as well as their account on X. Space.com will also carry the broadcast on our homepage, starting about 30 minutes before liftoff.

‘Coughing blood’: Rooster details harrowing lung injury
‘Coughing blood’: Rooster details harrowing lung injury
After coughing up blood, dropping 12kg and undergoing open lung surgery, rising Sydney Roosters prop De La Salle Va’a can comfortably say he’s been through more than most in his quest to make a name for himself in the NRL.
The 19-year-old made his return to action in the Roosters NSW Cup side on Saturday, three months on from an innocuous hit in a trial game that left the 121kg front-rower in hospital.
His comeback game at Gosford came just a few hours before elder brother Xavier, 21, scored just 45 seconds into his NRL debut, crashing over against Cronulla in front of a small army of fans.
The Roosters have high hopes for the American Samoa-born brothers but De La Salle, who made his NRL debut last year, could be forgiven for thinking his chance of establishing himself as a first-grade forward was about to pass him by.
“I copped a whack in a trial game and bruised my lung, it got infected with a staph infection and it ended up filling my lung with pus and fluid,” De La Salle told AAP.
“I had a couple of drains and those didn’t work so I had to get open lung surgery which was pretty serious.
“My lungs were full and I could hardly breathe for two weeks.
“I was coughing up straight-up blood for about a week, that was painful and pretty scary.
“When I initially went to hospital it was actually lower back pain and that was my kidneys getting infected and that travelled into the lung contusion – that’s when things went pear-shaped.”
De La Salle has thankfully recovered and punched out 40 minutes for the Roosters reserve grade side on Saturday.
The 200cm prop is back at a healthy playing weight of 121kg after dropping 12kg while he was bed-ridden.
His ambition is to play with his big brother in the NRL later this year after Xavier’s tryscoring exploits on debut with just his second touch.
“You can make your whole career and never get one of those,” said Roosters coach Trent Robinson, who leapt out of his seat when Xavier crashed in.
“He had a great front-rower’s carry and scored a fullback’s try.”
Xavier was once a promising boxer, who sparred with Paul Gallen, before going all-in on league after being lured to the Roosters.
“I tried to manage both… Gal. he’s a legend and I look up to him but then the Roosters came in when we were searching for a club,” Xavier said.
“Growing up we trained out of the same gym as Justis Huni and Jai Opetaia.
“It was the dream (to play NRL with my brother) growing up, we’ve been very fortunate.
“Salle’s illness was a crazy time for the family and we hit rock bottom but our faith was unwavering.
“I’m just glad to see him back out there for his first game and my debut.”

Runway lights weren’t working as pilot tried to land at foggy San Diego airport before fatal ******
Runway lights weren’t working as pilot tried to land at foggy San Diego airport before fatal ******
SAN DIEGO (AP) — The runway lights were out, a weather alert system wasn’t working and there was heavy fog at a San Diego airport when a pilot who had flown across the country made the decision to proceed with landing but came up short and crashed into a neighborhood, likely killing all six aboard the aircraft, investigators said Friday.
Investigator Dan Baker of the National Transportation Safety Board said officials will work over the next year to determine what caused the Cessna 550 Citation to ****** just before 4 a.m. Thursday. The jet was carrying a music executive and five others. No one in the neighborhood of U.S. Navy housing died, but eight people were treated for smoke inhalation from the fiery ****** and non-life-threatening injuries.
The pilot acknowledged the weather conditions for landing at the small airport were not ideal and debated diverting to a different airport while discussing the visibility with an air traffic controller at a regional Federal Aviation Administration control tower, according to audio of the conversation posted by LiveATC.net.
The FAA had posted an official notice for pilots that the lights were out of service, but it’s not known whether the pilot had checked it. He didn’t discuss the lights being out with air traffic control, but was aware that the airport’s weather alert system was inoperable. Ultimately, the pilot is heard saying that he’ll stick with the plan to land at Montgomery-Gibbs Executive Airport.
“Doesn’t sound great but we’ll give it a go,” he told the air traffic controller.
The plane crashed about 2 miles (3.22 kilometers) from the airport.
Baker said a power surge knocked out the weather system at the airport but the pilot was aware of the fog and an air traffic controller gave him weather information from Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, about 4 miles (6.44 kilometers) north.
Music talent agent Dave Shapiro, and two employees of the music agency he co-founded, Sound Talent Group, were among the dead along with the former drummer for metal band The ****** Wears Prada. Shapiro, 42, had a pilot’s license and was listed as the owner of the plane.
The two employees who died were Kendall Fortner, 24, and Emma Huke, 25, both Southern California natives and booking associates for the agency.
The ****** added to a long list of aviation disasters this year while federal officials have tried to reassure travelers that flying is the safest mode of transportation, which statistics support.
Shapiro’s aircraft took off from Teterboro, New Jersey, near Manhattan, at about 11:15 p.m. local time Wednesday and made a fuel stop in Wichita, Kansas, before continuing on to San Diego. He was returning to San Diego after a band he manages, Pierce The Veil, played for a sold-out audience at Madison Square Garden.
That overnight schedule wouldn’t be allowed for an airliner under federal crew rest rules, but those regulations don’t apply to private planes.
Assistant San Diego Fire Department Chief Dan Eddy said the fog was so thick in the morning that “you could barely see in front of you.”
Former NTSB and FAA ****** investigator Jeff Guzzetti said he thinks dense fog and fatigue after the pilot flew all night long were likely factors in the ******.
“This accident has all the earmarks of a classic attempt to approach an airport in really bad weather and poor visibility,” Guzzetti said. “And there were other airports that the crew could have gone to.”
He said pilots are required to check FAA posts called Notices to Airmen that alert pilots to any issues such as runway lights being out.
“It’s fairly easy for the pilot to get that information and they are required to get that information before any flight they take,” Guzzetti said.
The pilot also would have likely noticed the lights weren’t working as he descended. Without lights, procedure dictated that he should have climbed and diverted to another airport, Guzzetti said.
Fragments of the plane were found under power lines that are about a half block from the homes. It went on to lose a wing on the road directly behind the homes. Guzzetti said even if the plane had missed the power lines it may have still crashed because it was coming in too low in the fog.
A terrifying wakeup
The ****** site shows more damage on the front side of homes, including a smashed stone landscaping wall and an incinerated truck that was parked across the street and shoved into the living room of its owner’s home before catching fire.
Ben McCarty and his wife, who live in the home that was hit, said they felt heat all around them after being woken up by an explosion.
“All I could see was fire. The roof of the house was still on fire. You could see the night sky from our living room,” McCarty, who has served in the Navy for 13 years, told local ABC affiliate KGTV.
Flames blocked many of the exits so they grabbed their children and dogs and ran out the back but the burning debris blocked the gate so neighbors helped them climb over the fence to escape.
“We got the kids over the fence and then I jumped over the fence. They brought a ladder and we got the dogs,” McCarty said.
Meanwhile, fiery jet fuel rolled down the block igniting everything in its path from trees to plastic trash containers to car after car.
McCarty’s home was the only one destroyed, though another 10 residences suffered damage, authorities said.
McCarty said his family used to enjoy living under the flight path so they could watch the planes pass overhead.
“Us and our kids would sit on our front porch and we’d look up and my sons would always be excited saying ‘plane plane’ watching the planes go by and ironically right where we were sitting is where that plane hit,” McCarty said.
Now, he wants to move.
“I’m not going to live over that flight line again — it’s going to be hard to sleep at night,” McCarty said.
It could have been much worse
Guzzetti said in his experience there often aren’t deaths on the ground when a plane crashes in a residential area unless people are right where the plane hits such as in Philadelphia in January.
At least 100 residents in the San Diego neighborhood were evacuated and officials said it was unclear when it would be safe for people to return.
Thursday’s ****** comes only weeks after a small plane crashed into a neighborhood in Simi Valley northwest of Los Angeles, killing both people and a dog aboard the aircraft but leaving no one on the ground injured.
In October 2021 a twin-engine plane plowed into a San Diego suburb, killing the pilot and a UPS delivery driver on the ground and burning homes.

King’s invite to Canada sends a message to Trump
King’s invite to Canada sends a message to Trump
A decade ago, a portrait of the British monarch caused a row in ********* politics. Now, the King is being invited to deliver the Speech from the Throne. What’s changed?
In 2011, shortly after forming a majority Conservative government, Prime Minister Stephen Harper caused a national uproar when he sought to emphasise Canada’s ties to the British monarchy. In one example, he replaced two artworks by a Quebec painter with a portrait of the Queen.
Some rebuked the gesture as being out of touch with modern times. Canada has, throughout its 157-year-old history, sought increasing independence from the British monarchy, while still remaining a part of the Commonwealth.
When Liberal Prime Minister Justin Trudeau succeeded Harper four years later, the Queen’s portrait went down, the Quebec paintings, back up.
Fast forward to 2025, and a paradoxical shift has occurred in Canada’s relationship with the Crown. In a transparent show of Canada’s sovereignty and independence against threats from US President Donald Trump, Prime Minister Mark Carney – a Liberal – has invited King Charles the III to open the 45th ********* parliament.
The move is “a huge affirmation and statement about the uniqueness of Canada and its traditions,” Justin Vovk, a ********* royal historian, told the BBC – “a theatrical display that is meant to show what makes Canadians separate from Americans” and not, as Trump has often repeated, a “51st state”.
Both countries are former British colonies, but America’s founding fathers took a different path and severed all formal connections to the Crown nearly 250 years ago.
Canada’s separation from the monarchy has been more gradual, and its ties have never been completely broken. Canada’s parliamentary system is modelled after Britain’s Westminster system. The British monarch is still formally the head of state, but their duties are often carried out by their ********* representative, called the governor general.
Loyalty to the Crown was seen as important to Canada’s politicians in the 19th Century who wanted to maintain separation from the US, said ********* royal historian and commentator Carolyn Harris.
That later changed in the 1960s, as Quebec – Canada’s majority French-speaking province – began to assert its own distinct identity and threatened separation. This led to an era of politicians like Lester B Pearson and Pierre Elliott Trudeau who worked to untangle Canada from its British colonial past.
In 1982, Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau repatriated Canada’s constitution, giving full legislative power to the federal government and the provinces, and removing it from British parliament.
Ms Harris noted that Canada remained a constitutional monarchy throughout these periods. What fluctuated, however, was how much the prime minister of the day chooses to embrace that connection.
Trudeau and Queen Elizabeth II signed the Constitution proclamation giving Canada full control of its own constitution in 1982 [Getty Images]
Carney’s invite to King Charles III signals that his government will be one that is much more supportive of the Crown, Mr Vovk said, marking “a very different tone” from previous Liberals.
A British monarch has not delivered Canada’s throne speech since 1977, and has not opened a brand new session of parliament since 1957, making the King’s upcoming visit a truly rare occasion.
It comes at a consequential time for Canada.
Carney heavily campaigned on standing up to Trump, after the US president spent months undermining Canada’s sovereignty by saying it would be better off as a US state.
Trump also imposed a series of tariffs that have threatened Canada’s economic stability, given that the US is its largest trade partner by far.
When announcing the visit last month, Carney called it “a historic honour that matches the weight of our times”.
He added that the King’s visit “clearly underscores the sovereignty of our country”.
Both historians, Mr Vovk and Ms Harris, noted that the bulk of Canada’s modern population is indifferent to the British monarchy. Some are even critical of it.
The coronation of King Charles III in 2023 made way for fresh scrutiny of the Crown’s historic mistreatment of indigenous people in Canada, and questions on whether the new monarch will move towards reconciliation.
Quebec politicians are also still calling for Canada to cut ties with the monarchy. On Friday, the separatist Bloc Québécois party said it will again seek to scrap the need for elected officials to swear allegiance to the King.
Some Canadians will be intrigued by the pomp and pageantry of the King’s visit, Mr Vovk said, but its chief purpose is to send a political message from Canada to the world.
It is also a way for Prime Minister Carney to improve the relationship with Trump, who is famously a fan of the British monarchy and its history.
“Strengthening the relationship with the monarchy puts a stamp on legitimacy that transcends individual parties and the current political climate,” Mr Vovk said. “Politicians come and go, but the monarchy has always remained.”
It also works to tie Canada closer to Europe – a key objective of Prime Minister Carney, a former governor of the Bank of England, who has spoken about the need for Canada to find new allies as it navigates its changing relationship with the US.
The visit is notable for the Crown, too.
It will be the King’s first to Canada as reigning monarch. He and the Queen had intended to visit last year, but cancelled their plans due to his ******* diagnosis.
The palace has promised a throne speech that will “mark a significant moment between the Head of State and the ********* people”.
And while it will be a short trip – the King and Queen will arrive Monday morning and depart Tuesday evening – the palace said they hope the trip will be “an impactful one”.

Astronomers spot galaxy shaped like the Milky Way but is far more massive
Astronomers spot galaxy shaped like the Milky Way but is far more massive
By Will Dunham
WASHINGTON (Reuters) -Astronomers have observed a galaxy dating to an earlier epoch in the universe’s history that surprisingly is shaped much like our Milky Way – a spiral structure with a straight bar of stars and gas running through its center – but far more massive, offering new insight into galactic formation.
The distant galaxy, called J0107a, was observed as it appeared 11.1 billion years ago, when the universe was about a fifth of its current age. The researchers used data from the Chile-based Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) and NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope to study the galaxy.
They determined that the galaxy’s mass, including its stars and gas, was more than 10 times greater than that of the Milky Way, and it was forming stars at an annual rate approximately 300 times greater. J0107a was more compact than the Milky Way, however.
“The galaxy is a monster galaxy with a high star formation rate and plenty of gas, much more than present-day galaxies,” said astronomer Shuo Huang of the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan, lead author of the study published this week in the journal Nature.
“This discovery,” said study co-author Toshiki Saito, an astronomer at Shizuoka University in Japan, “raises the important question: How did such a massive galaxy form in such an early universe?”
While a few galaxies that are undergoing star formation at a similar rate to J0107a exist in today’s universe, almost all of them are ones that are in the process of a galactic merger or collision. There was no sign of such circumstances involving this galaxy.
J0107a and the Milky Way have some commonalities.
“They are similarly huge and possess a similar barred structure. However, the Milky Way had plenty of time to form its huge structures, while J0107a didn’t,” Saito said.
In the first few billion years after the Big Bang event 13.8 billion years ago that initiated the universe, galaxies were turbulent entities and were much richer in gas than those existing currently – factors that fostered extreme bursts of star formation. While galaxies with highly organized structures like the barred spiral shape of the Milky Way are common now, that was not the case 11.1 billion years ago.
“Compared to other monster galaxies in the distant universe (dating to an earlier cosmic epoch) whose shapes are usually disturbed or irregular, it is unexpected that J0107a looks very similar to present-day spiral galaxies,” Huang said.
“Theories about the formation of present-day galactic structures may need to be revised,” Huang added.
The Webb telescope, as it peers across vast distances back to the early universe, has found that galaxies with a spiral shape appeared much earlier than previously known. J0107a is now one of the earliest-known examples of a barred spiral galaxy.
About two thirds of spiral galaxies observed in the universe today possess a bar structure. The bar is thought to serve as a form of stellar nursery, bringing gas inward from the galaxy’s spiral arms. Some of the gas forms what are called molecular clouds. Gravity causes the contraction of these clouds, with small centers taking shape that heat up and become new stars.
The bar that is part of J0107a measures about 50,000 light years in length, Huang said. A light-year is the distance light travels in a year, 5.9 trillion miles (9.5 trillion km).
The Webb telescope “has been studying the morphology of early massive galaxies intensely recently. However, their dynamics are still poorly understood,” Saito said.

Texas closer to putting Ten Commandments in classrooms
Texas closer to putting Ten Commandments in classrooms
Texas would require all public school classrooms to display the Ten Commandments under a Republican proposal that’s cleared a major vote.
If passed as expected, the measure is likely to draw a legal challenge from critics who consider it a constitutional violation of the separation of church and state.
The Republican-controlled House gave its preliminary approval on Saturday, with a final vote expected in the next few days. That would send the bill to the desk of Republican Governor Greg Abbott, who has indicated he will sign it into law.
“The focus of this bill is to look at what is historically important to our nation educationally and judicially,” said Republican state representative Candy Noble, a co-sponsor of the bill.
Two other states, Louisiana and Arkansas, have similar laws, but Louisiana’s is on hold after a federal judge found that it was “unconstitutional on its face”.
Those measures are among efforts, mainly in conservative-led states, to insert religion into public schools.
Texas lawmakers also have passed and sent to Abbott a measure that allows school districts to provide students and staff a daily voluntary ******* of prayer or time to read a religious text during school hours. Abbott is expected to sign it.
Supporters of the Ten Commandments in classrooms say they are part of the foundation of the United States’ judicial and educational systems and should be displayed.
But critics, including some Christian and other faith leaders, say the Ten Commandments and prayer measures would infringe the religious freedom of others.

‘They know that it can’t be coal moving forward’
‘They know that it can’t be coal moving forward’
Communities in Colorado that once relied on coal are exploring a bold new chapter — one that could keep their towns powered and their economies thriving. Former coal towns are now eyeing an alternative energy option as a promising path forward thanks to a new state law.
Signed in March 2024, the new law includes nuclear power in Colorado’s definitions of “clean energy.” It also sets aside funding to explore whether small nuclear reactors could be a good fit for former coal towns. Now, communities once fueled by coal are taking a serious look at nuclear as a clean, reliable alternative to keep their economies strong and their lights on.
“We are not going to get to 100% carbon-free electricity with just solar and wind,” said state Sen. Dylan Roberts, a co-sponsor of the bill, according to CBS News.
This transition offers a path forward for local economies facing the loss of coal jobs. “They want to be energy producers,” said Roberts. “They know that it can’t be coal moving forward … but it could be these modern nuclear generators that are very safe and smaller scale and but still do produce good jobs and produce a lot of energy that can be sent throughout the region.”
Craig, a Colorado city of about 10,000 people, braces for the loss of roughly 700 jobs as coal mining winds down and energy plants shut their doors. For communities like Craig, nuclear power offers a chance to stay rooted in energy production while moving toward a cleaner, more resilient future.
As coal plants shut down, small modular nuclear reactors can potentially bring in skilled, long-term jobs — many of which could build on the existing expertise of former coal plant employees. Instead of economic decline, these communities could see a resurgence driven by clean energy innovation.
Watch now: How bad is a gas stove for your home’s indoor air quality?
This shift could also mean big wins for the environment. Nuclear energy doesn’t produce the carbon emissions that come from burning coal, which means cleaner air and a smaller climate footprint. And with today’s advanced technology, it’s possible to generate steady, round-the-clock power without the pollution. For communities making the transition, it’s a way to protect the natural landscapes they love while playing a key role in powering the region.

WA State Emergency Service volunteers travel to NSW to lend a hand in flood crisis
WA State Emergency Service volunteers travel to NSW to lend a hand in flood crisis
A team of WA State Emergency Service volunteers have travelled to New South Wales to help in the devastating flood crisis.
Thirty people, including SES flood recovery volunteers and Department of Fire and Emergency Services career officers, flew to NSW early on Sunday morning.
Emergency Services Minister Paul Papalia said WA was “always quick to come to the aid of other states that are in need”.
“We know our eastern states counterparts have been working in incredibly difficult conditions around the clock, so WA’s SES volunteers and DFES personnel will hit the ground running,” he said.
“They will be sent to different places, including Wollongong, Taree, Port Macquarie and Nambucca.
“As of 10am Saturday, NSW SES had been called out to an incredible 7000+ incidents, including 765 rescues.”
Mr Papalia wished the team the best of luck.

SES personnel are also being flown in from Queensland and Victoria.
The NSW SES says the clean-up has started, while they are looking to resupply residents who have been cut off due to rising waters during record floods across the NSW Mid North Coast and Hunter regions.
NSW SES acting assistant commissioner Allison Flaxman said they estimate 10,000 properties have been impacted by the floods. Five people have died.
“As the river levels begin to subside, NSW SES members and our partner agencies are today commencing the task of assessing properties which have been flood-affected,” Ms Flaxman said.
The SES is warning residents to let damage assessments take place before anyone tries to return home.
At the same time she said the SES will continue to carry out re-supply operations of essential foods and medications to stranded residents.
“The NSW SES has carried out 200 resupply requests in the last two days,” Ms Flaxman said.
“There are still many communities that remain isolated, with 50,000 people estimated to be impacted.”

Thousand Flags pays tribute on Memorial Day weekend
Thousand Flags pays tribute on Memorial Day weekend
Remember their names. Speak them aloud. Honor the freedom they secured for you.
“They always say a soldier dies twice — when they actually die and the last time that you say their name. So we always make sure to remember them by their names, especially this weekend,” Kim Price reflected Saturday during the opening ceremony for Thousand Flags, an annual, moving Memorial Day tribute at The Park at River Walk put on by the Bakersfield Breakfast Rotary Club.
Price introduced a cadre of Bakersfield Pageant title holders, recalling that earlier that day two had placed American flags at the gravesites of grandparents buried at Bakersfield National Cemetery. She remembered her own grandfather’s military service, too, imploring listeners to remember Memorial Day isn’t simply an extra day off or a time for barbecues.
The Rev. Angelo Frazier, a pastor at RiverLakes Community Church and volunteer chaplain at the Bakersfield Police Department, invited those gathered at the park to, on the count of three, mention aloud the names of loved ones who have gone before us. And then a second time. Names were quietly uttered.
“No greater love than this; that one lays down his life for his friends,” Frazier said, quoting scripture. Although the ****** passage refers to the ultimate sacrifice of Jesus, it also reminds us of those who gave the ultimate sacrifice under heaven, the pastor said.
He prayed that the Thousand Flags display would give people hope, inspire them and remind them of the future to come. He also asked that people pray for and support those still living who are burdened with great loss.
Leaders of the Bakersfield Breakfast Rotary Club see firsthand the touching moments that come from their diligent work to pull off the annual display honoring the ultimate sacrifice of those who have served their country.
Denise Haynes, the club’s Thousand Flags event director, said touching moments emerge every year: The simple “thank you” for the display. A man who asks if he might have the honor of placing a flag, then reveals he wanted to do so for a fallen friend. Another who places a tribute card before a flag, and follows with prayer.
“We enjoy and are honored to give this event to the community each year,” Haynes said.
The moments are pure and simple. The South High School JROTC raised the flag. Koumba Cariño Diallo sang “The Star-Spangled Banner.” Women and men in seemingly private moments shed tears as they stroll among the 1,000 American flags planted in the park’s soil.
“We at the Bakersfield Breakfast Rotary Club are honored to bring this majestic and patriotic tribute to the community each year,” club President David Lari said.
Times of reflection — along with a concert, barbecue, resource fair, run and walk and more — continue through Monday.
To conclude Saturday’s opening ceremony, Bakersfield Mayor Karen Goh called on the community to remember the price of freedom.
She summarized the sacrifice of U.S. Army Sgt. Larry S. Pierce of Taft, who in the central highlands of South Vietnam threw himself upon a mine on Sept. 20, 1965 to save his company of 29 men. He was only 24, and left behind a wife, daughter and two sons.
“So today as we take the time to wander through this beautiful array, let us remember that price of freedom, that precious price of freedom,” Goh said. “And let our hearts never forget those who paid that price. Let us also always remember the families who paid the price of freedom.”
Let our daily actions live out and honor the freedom that was purchased so dearly for us, the mayor said.
Remember their names. Speak them aloud.

Price moves to help RBA plot course through uncertainty
Price moves to help RBA plot course through uncertainty
The Reserve Bank could use fresh inflation insights to gauge the depth of further rate cuts as global uncertainty threatens Australia’s economic progress.
Consumer price data for April, to be released on Wednesday, will help guide the RBA on future changes after it reduced the cash rate to its lowest level in two years.
The decision showed the central bank was moving in a more dovish direction as Australia’s main inflation measure returned to its target range of two to three per cent, NAB economists Michelle Shi and Gareth Spence said.
The RBA on Tuesday cut the official cash rate by a quarter of a percentage point to 3.85 per cent.
NAB economists predict another three rate cuts in the second half of 2025, bringing the cash rate to a “broadly neutral” stance of 3.1 per cent by November.
But US tariff drama and the unpredictability of Donald Trump’s economic actions will continue to loom large over RBA meetings.
High levels of global uncertainty are likely to persist even as trade tensions ease between the US and China, the NAB economists warn.
“Unless pushed, the RBA could take a more gradual path towards neutral while watching the inflation data over time,” they said.
Over the previous decade, *********** inflation has rarely been “just right”.
JP Morgan’s chief economist for Australia and New Zealand, Ben Jarman, warned the monthly inflation indicator could suggest “too much of a good thing” and drop below the target band.
However, quarterly trimmed mean inflation – the RBA’s preferred measure – was more likely to be sticky due to a strong jobs market, which meant core inflation could stay within the bank’s target into 2026, Mr Jarman said.
Rate cuts could lead to a rebound in home construction, Housing Industry Association chief economist Tim Reardon said, as the *********** Bureau of Statistics prepares to release building approvals data on Friday.
While the sector is already showing signs of improved confidence with homebuilding expected to increase across the next five years, long-term issues such as land shortages pose risks to affordability and reaching national supply targets.
“Australia has the capacity to deliver, but it will take a co-ordinated response from all three tiers of government to overcome these constraints,” Mr Reardon said.
Retail trade figures for April are also due on Friday after the RBA flagged consumer spending had been softer than expected in recent months.
This will be the one of the last retail trade releases before the statistics bureau replaces the series with a broader household spending indicator.

Police to increase patrols at Seattle parks and beaches, move to seasonal operating hours
As part of Seattle’s Summer Safety Strategy, Mayor Bruce Harrell’s administration is aiming to reduce crime at some of the city’s most popular parks and beaches.
A number of parks that will see these changes over the summer include Alki Beach Park, Golden Gardens Park, Seward Park, Magnuson Park, Cal Anderson Park, according to a release.
The mayor’s office cited recent violent events like the mass shooting in Pioneer Square that left three dead and one critically injured on May 17.
Police and rangers will be increasing patrols at parks and boat ramps, and new gates will be installed at Magnuson Park and Gas Works Park to prevent access after closing, Harroll’s office said.
Alki and Golden Garden beaches will have summer operating hours from 4 a.m. to 10:30 p.m., and fires in designated fire pits must be extinguished by 10 p.m.

WA feedlot numbers continue to surge as global demand for *********** boxed beef booms
WA feedlot numbers continue to surge as global demand for *********** boxed beef booms
WA feedlotters are feeling positive about the year ahead with 51,235 head of cattle on feed in March and grain fed beef exports continuing to surge to record highs.
The latest WA figures were revealed in the latest national feedlot survey by the *********** Lot Feeders Association and Meat and Livestock Australia and published earlier month.
*********** feedlot numbers climbed to record levels in March, with 1.49 million head in feedlots across the country by the end of the month.
Nationally, feedlots were at 90 per cent capacity, which industry refers to as feedlot utilisation.
WA Lot Feeders Association president Lucy Morris, the senior operations manager at TW Pearson and Son, said the State’s feedlot sector was feeling positive about demand for feedlot space and grainfed beef.
“The tight summer ******* and lack of rainfall throughout the southern areas of the State has brought some opportunities for feedlots to access additional feeder cattle which came onto the market as a result,” she said,
“Demand for WA grain fed beef seems to be on the rise with China looking for alternatives to the US market, and subsequently other markets are seeking to fill the void created by the demand from China.
“This is really positive for WA and there will be opportunities to gain ground in markets especially throughout South East Asia where we have a freight proximity advantage over our competitors.”
While WA’s feedlot numbers were hovering at 10 per cent above the same quarter last year, the report noted feedlot utilisation was 71 per cent with capacity remaining flat at 89 per cent.
Comparatively, drought-like conditions plaguing farmers in South Australia and Victoria had sent feedlot utilisation in the latter soaring to more than 90 per cent — the State’s highest since 2019.
Meat and Livestock Australia senior market analyst Erin Lukey said it was important to note that WA’s feedlot sector was “largely seasonal” and traditionally peaked in March.
She said the national and WA results highlighted the adaptability of the lot feeding sector and how it could respond to shifting seasonal and market conditions.
“Australia is currently facing a stark contrast in seasonal conditions: the south is experiencing sustained dry weather, with SA, Victoria, and parts of NSW experiencing poor pasture and feed availability,” she said.
“As a result, many producers have turned to feedlots to finish cattle to hit target weights through short-feeding programs.”
Australia exported a record amount of beef in April, at 127,000 tonnes, with China ramping up is imports after ceasing imports from the US on the back of US President Donald Trump’s controversial trade tariffs.
But the US remains Australia’s biggest beef customer, taking 37,213t compared to China’s 21,572t.
WA’s feedlot sector is seasonal in nature, and typically peaks during the first and last quarters of the year.
Queensland is the nation’s feedlotting capital, with more than 850,000 cattle on feed in March, followed by NSW at 442,735, South Australia at 71,060 and Victoria at 69,613.

*********** authorities airdrop supplies to farmers stranded by flood crisis
SYDNEY (Reuters) -Helicopters were being used on Sunday to drop animal feed to farmers in Australia’s New South Wales state stranded by floods that have killed five and isolated tens of thousands in the country’s southeast.
Recovery is under way in the mid-north coast region of Australia’s most populous state after days of flooding cut off towns, swept away livestock and destroyed homes. At least 10,000 properties may have been damaged in the floods, which were sparked by days of incessant rain, authorities estimate.
About 32,000 residents remained isolated due to floodwaters, which were slowly starting to recede, the state’s Emergency Services posted on the X platform.
“The New South Wales government is providing emergency fodder, veterinary care, management advice and aerial support for isolated stock,” state Agriculture Minister Tara Moriarty said in a statement.
It said 43 helicopter drops and around 130 drops by other means had provided “isolated farmers with emergency fodder for their stranded livestock”.
At their peak, the floods isolated around 50,000 people, submerging intersections and street signs in mid-north coast towns and covering cars up to their windshields, after fast-rising waters burst river banks.
Five deaths have been linked to the floods, the latest a man in his 80s whose body was found at a flooded property about 50 km (30 miles) from Taree, one of the worst-hit towns, police said. Taree sits along the Manning River more than 300 km (190 miles) north of state capital Sydney.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said on Saturday that conditions remained critical in flood-affected regions of New South Wales, as clean-up efforts began.
Australia has been hit with increasing extreme weather events that some experts say are the result of climate change. After droughts and devastating bushfires at the end of last decade, frequent floods have wreaked havoc since early 2021.
