Fire damages Fairview Heights restaurant with no sprinkler system or working alarm
Fire damages Fairview Heights restaurant with no sprinkler system or working alarm
A fire badly damaged the Captain D’s seafood restaurant in Fairview Heights early Saturday morning.
Officials believe it started in the kitchen, according to Fire Chief John Winters, of Fairview Fire Department, which is part of Fairview-Caseyville Township Fire Protection District.
“There were no sprinkler systems, and the alarm system did not activate,” he said. “So we were behind from the beginning.”
Captain D’s is at 6004 S. Illinois St. The fire department received a call about smoke coming from the building at 2:33 a.m. Saturday.
“We were unable to locate the fire because it had gotten up into the attic, so we had to back out and fight it defensively,” Winters said. “We did get it under control. We were on scene for about three hours.”
The building was unoccupied, and no injuries were reported.
Five other departments — O’Fallon, French Village, Signal Hill, Northwest St. Clair County and Collinsville — also responded to help. East Side and Lebanon stepped in to cover the city of Fairview Heights temporarily.
“It will be up to the insurance company (to decide whether the building is a total loss),” Winters said. “But they’re definitely going to be closed for a long time.”
Firefighters are shown in the drive-thru area of Captain D’s restaurant in Fairview Heights on Saturday morning, when the building was damaged by fire.

Research the whole kit and cavoodle, vet costs can bite
Research the whole kit and cavoodle, vet costs can bite
Inflation has not spared the family ****, and the costs of keeping them healthy has outstripped some other increases.
Rising pharmaceutical costs continued to outpace broader rises, according to insurer PetSure’s latest **** Health Monitor.
Some owners are diligent researchers, the company’s chief veterinary officer Simone Maher told AAP.
“But then there are others who unfortunately are caught out because there are some underlying predispositions that they’re not aware of and not prepared for,” she said.
According to the insurer’s data, from more than 700,000 insured pets across Australia, the average dog owner claimed $1047 in vet bills in 2024.
No longer relegated to “outside”, dogs are now allowed at many cafes, pubs and offices.
Virgin Australia has announced plans to allow them on domestic flights.
Owners were willing to spend more and plan for vet costs amid the increasing the “humanisation” of dogs, Dr Maher said.
The popular cavoodle accounted for 10 per cent of the insured breeds and were second in costs only behind border collies, with owners claiming less than $800 a year.
Traditional working dogs such as collies and kelpies are less prone to obesity and related diseases, and less likely to need corrective surgeries than dogs bred for exaggerated anatomical features.
The same can’t be said for flat-faced dogs such French bulldogs and pugs, which sometimes require complex treatments.
French bulldogs had an average annual claim of $1641.
They also had great personalities, Dr Maher said.
But as with any breed it helps to research, and financial costs aren’t the only ones to consider.
“We do need to be mindful that if we are selecting for those features, they do come at a ******** cost,” Dr Maher said.
The report also provided some insight into **** name trends.
Whether it’s a certain generation of first-time **** owners’ enduring affinity for Harry Potter, or perhaps the canine tendency to howl at the moon, Luna is once again the most popular name for female dogs.
It proved similarly popular for cats.
Teddy was most popular for male dogs, while Milo topped the list for for male cats.
Dr Maher advised prospective owners to put some thought into what they call their dog.
“Just make sure it’s something you’re comfortable yelling out for the next 15 years or so.”

France impounds *** vessel accused of ******** fishing
France impounds *** vessel accused of ******** fishing
A British fishing vessel has been impounded by the French authorities, accused of illegally fishing in their waters.
It was seized in the English Channel and is being held at the port of Boulogne, unable to leave while the French authorities consider bringing a prosecution.
The vessel was stopped at sea by the French Navy on Thursday night, with its crew alleged to have been fishing in French waters without a licence.
The incident comes days after Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer was criticised by British fishermen over his reset deal with the European Union, which gives EU fishing vessels access to *** waters for 12 more years.
The Foreign Office said it was offering support to a British national in France and was in touch with local authorities.
“As the vessel remains subject to an ongoing investigation by French fisheries authorities, we are unable to comment further at this time,” a government spokesperson added.
According to the French Coastguard, the navy patrol vessel Pluvier was conducting inspections in their waters overnight on 23 May, finding the British vessel to have been allegedly operating without a licence.
The fishing vessel was diverted to Boulogne “for the purpose of initiating prosecution”.
The Conservatives accused the French authorities of “shameful double standards” over the arrest.
Shadow home secretary Chris Philp said they had failed to stop thousands of migrants crossing the Channel in small boats, accusing France of “taking no action whatsoever at sea and often ushering the ******** immigrants into *** waters”.
“Yet when a *** fishing vessel is in French waters all of a sudden they are magically able to act. If the French can now intercept boats then they should start stopping the boats with ******** immigrants – as international law obliges them to do.”
The *** and the EU have struck a deal that covers fishing, trade, defence, energy and strengthening ties in a number of policy areas still up for negotiation.
A key part of the deal involves giving European fishing boats a further 12 years of access to British waters in exchange for easing some trade frictions.
Critics from the Conservatives and Reform *** described the deal as a “surrender” to the EU, while the Liberal Democrats said the government had taken some “positive first steps” to rebuilding ties with Europe.

Was Jim Cramer Right About RTX Corporation (RTX)?
Was Jim Cramer Right About RTX Corporation (RTX)?
We recently published a list of 12 Stocks Jim Cramer Was Right About. In this article, we are going to take a look at where RTX Corporation (NYSE:RTX) stands against other stocks that Jim Cramer discusses.
Back in 2024, on May 15, Mad Money’s Jim Cramer discussed the performance of post-breakup aerospace and defense stocks, spotlighting RTX Corporation (NYSE:RTX) as a strong example of a successful spin-off from United Technologies.
“The part that merged with Raytheon, the new RTX, has rallied 108% since the breakup, total return of 13% including dividend. It’s now worth over $140 billion. This was that little problem they had with the engine — they really put that behind them very quickly. I’m proud of these guys, by the way. I think RTX is a great business, both on the commercial aerospace and the defense side.”
Cramer’s confidence paid off, as the stock climbed a solid 29.97% since his endorsement.
Was Jim Cramer Right About RTX Corporation (RTX)?
An aerial view of a commercial jetliner in flight, its airframe glinting in the sun.
RTX Corporation (NYSE:RTX) is expanding its aerospace services business as defense orders rebound and commercial travel returns to strength. During a recent discussion earlier in May on how tariffs could affect the company, Jim Cramer said the following:
“First of all, they were very forthcoming about the tariffs. That was right. Second, it is a way for people, for countries to be able to say, listen, I know we have a trade, we have a huge trade surplus with you. We are going to write a check to RTX and get what we need. You are spot on.”
Overall, RTX ranks 12th on our list of stocks that Jim Cramer discusses. While we acknowledge the potential of RTX as an investment, our conviction lies in the belief that some AI stocks hold greater promise for delivering higher returns and have limited downside risk. If you are looking for an AI stock that is more promising than RTX and that has 100x upside potential, check out our report about this cheapest AI stock.

China’s Xi, Germany’s Merz stress ties to weather trade turmoil
BEIJING/BERLIN (Reuters) -******** President Xi Jinping and ******* Chancellor Friedrich Merz in a call on Friday highlighted the importance of their countries’ relationship as both China and Europe are trying to tackle uncertainty caused by U.S. tariff policies.
Europe and China are among the biggest trading partners of the U.S. and have deep trading ties with each other. ********-******* trade volume alone accounted for around 246 billion euros ($279 billion) last year, according to official figures.
Germany has in recent years sought a difficult balance in relations with China, seen by Berlin as both a strategic rival and a vital trading partner whose giant market has buoyed Germany’s large export-driven economy.
In the call, Xi noted changes in the world unseen in a century, with “intertwined turmoil and transformation,” official broadcaster CCTV reported.
“China is willing to work with Germany to open a new chapter in their all-round strategic partnership, to lead China-EU relations toward new development, and to contribute to the stable growth of the global economy,” Xi was quoted as saying.
Merz’s spokesperson said both leaders emphasized their willingness to cooperate to overcome global challenges.
“Chancellor Merz emphasized the importance of fair competition and reciprocity,” he added.
Neither Berlin nor the CCTV report explicitly mentioned U.S. tariffs.
Beijing earlier this month urged Germany not to undermine cooperation in the name of de-risking, a strategy by Europe to reduce its dependence on China trade.

‘Half an alligator’ waddles across road, startles Louisiana drivers
PLAQUEMINES PARISH, La. – Drivers in southern Louisiana were surprised to see a tailless alligator slowly waddling across a highway.
The unusual encounter was captured on video Monday by Ashlyn Bartholomew while on Highway 23 in Plaquemines Parish.
Bartholomew said she was driving home after dropping her kids off at baseball practice when she spotted the stubby reptile. Initially, she wasn’t even sure if it was an alligator or a large dog.

According to Robert Mendyk, a reptile expert at the Audubon Zoo, the alligator likely lost its tail in a fight with another gator. He also said it’s common for these resilient reptiles to survive such severe injuries.

‘This is really scary’: farmers battle historic drought
‘This is really scary’: farmers battle historic drought
Farmer Paul Manwaring has been living in the shadow of rain.
The cattle breeder has watched for months as promising forecasts disappear, while the occasional shower creates patches of growth on the parched plains around Cootamundra, in southwestern NSW.
“It’s all green where a storm went through, but 200 metres down the road it’s desolate,” Mr Manwaring told AAP.
The region is in the grips of disaster, according to the NSW drought indicator, part of a large area lit up in orange on the map.
Surrounding regions are also drying out, expected to slip into drought by mid-winter.
“(The rain) keeps either going north or south of us and we just keep being in that shadow,” Mr Manwaring said.
After a hot summer, the mild and wet autumn break that farmers typically expect did not come.
Scattered rain across parts of the district in recent days arrived too late as producers had already made tough decisions.
Mr Manwaring, who runs a small livestock operation, sold his sheep in spring in anticipation of the dry, figuring that a run of good seasons would turn.
Others have had to pull up their crops, change their planting regimes or sell stock in a busy market, necessary moves that will affect farm incomes for years.
“Even when it does rain, it’s going to take a while to grow feed for all the livestock,” Mr Manwaring said.
Much of southern Australia is in drought at the same time as the NSW Hunter and mid-north coast regions face a major flood emergency, with five months’ rain falling there in two days.
April rainfall has been well below average across much of Victoria, Tasmania, southern NSW, eastern SA, and the west coast and interior of WA, according to the Bureau of Meteorology’s drought statement.
Tasmania recorded its driest April in a decade, with falls 50 per cent below the 40-year average.
South Australia has also been hit particularly hard, with $2 billion wiped from the state’s economy after the worst harvest in 15 years.
Cassie Oster, whose family runs a grazing and cropping operation at Jabuk, about 150km southeast of Adelaide, says producers on the marginal country are always prepared for dry conditions.
But this drought is particularly brutal.
“We are at a point where we’re like … this is really scary,” Ms Oster said.
“The decisions we’re having to make are things that we’ve never been faced with before.”
The family has sold off more than 1000 sheep and abandoned several crops.
Those kinds of decisions make it harder for farmers to buy back into the market after the drought breaks, when they are also likely to face higher costs of inputs, machinery and fuel.
Drought conditions have been slowly creeping in since early 2023, mostly in regions with western-facing coastlines.
Dry periods have been historically linked to the El Nino climate pattern, but *********** scientists have identified more nuance in what triggers low rainfall.
Droughts develop when weather systems that lift and carry moisture from the ocean disappear, a recent scientific review found.
That has been the case for months across the south, with slow-moving high pressure systems dominating and bringing warm and dry conditions with them.
There has been a long-term shift towards drier conditions in southern Australia, according to the weather bureau’s 2024 climate change report.
As the dry takes hold and forecasts fail to offer any certainty, farming groups have been calling for greater drought awareness and support.
Ms Oster is one of many farmers backing a petition for a formal drought declaration to unlock emergency funds, something the SA government says it cannot do under a federal agreement.
She said the national drought plan, which aims to make farmers financially self-reliant, is all very well in a typical scenario.
Most farmers spend the good years preparing for the bad, but the last few seasons have made that nearly impossible.
“It’s like no other drought we’ve ever seen,” Ms Oster said.
The Victorian Farmers Federation has urged politicians to spend more time in the regions.
“Mental health is a huge concern: when farmers feel isolated, unsupported and forgotten, the consequences can be devastating for individuals and entire communities,” president Brett Hosking said.
Eileen Jorgensen, who has spent a lifetime farming in Victoria, has noticed growers becoming more open about the mental toll of drought.
But distressed farmers talking to each other could only help for so long, she said.
“That is probably the darker side of the drought,” Ms Jorgensen told AAP while looking out the window at her drying paddocks in the Wimmera region, in the state’s west.
The Jorgensens, who grow grain and raise sheep and Clydesdale horses, are able to keep their stock watered by the Wimmera Mallee pipeline that was built after successive droughts in the early 2000s.
But others further south are having to cart water and source increasingly expensive stock feed.
Ms Jorgensen remains pragmatic, having grown up working in her father’s market garden watching bad seasons come and go.
“You just know it’s going to rain eventually,” she said.
“It may not be tomorrow, it may not be next month, but it will rain.”

The dual camera layout also provides you with a wider view to eliminate blind spots, and intelligent recognition will not only tell you when there’s a package, but remind you about it later. That last feature is, in my opinion, worth the cost alone.
Keep a few extra bucks in your wallet while keeping things safe with these Memorial Day Home Security Deals.

Fashion spinning new yarns from a sheep’s head to tail
Fashion spinning new yarns from a sheep’s head to tail
Australia rides on the sheep’s back, or so goes the time-worn saying about the worth of the meat and wool industry.
But a sustainable fashion project is proving there is also plenty of value in the sheep’s head, legs, belly and even its fluffy bottom.
The short fibres from these parts of a sheep, called locks, are usually considered of very low value and are either used for chunky knit garments or discarded.
In a trial backed by *********** fashion brand Country Road’s climate fund, a group of innovators has developed a way to use locks to make a sustainable fine yarn ideal for clothing fabric.
“The same sheep that produces super-fine wool used in a nice suit or a jumper … the bits that they generally can’t use from the belly, the legs and the bottom are able to be used,” said Chris Hurren from Deakin University’s Institute for Frontier Materials.
The Mud to Marle project, a collaboration between the institute, social enterprise Full Circle Fibres and textile manufacturer LoomTex, blended the South *********** locks with Queensland cotton.
The unique mix, which creates a stretch fabric without the need for synthetic fibres, has been used in prototypes for women’s suits, T-shirts, jumpers, pants and skirts.
The method has several sustainability benefits, including the need to dye only the wool threads to create a marle effect.
Dyeing the wool rather than the cotton saves on water and energy as the fleece more readily takes on colour.
The natural fibres are also environmentally friendly, Associate Professor Hurren said.
“There’s no synthetics in what we’re doing,” he said.
“And if they’re uncoloured, or coloured with the right dyestuffs, they would be able to be broken back down into soil at the end of their lifetime.”
Mud to Marle has also demonstrated that low-impact, end-to-end textile manufacturing is possible in Australia.
The yarn spinning, usually done offshore, was completed using equipment at Deakin University before it was woven in Geelong and knitted and dyed in Melbourne.
The sample clothing, in warm shades of lilac and mango, was made in Sydney and Melbourne.
“The biggest challenge here is the narrative that (Australia) can’t make anything, but we can make loads of stuff,” Full Circle Fibres founder Meriel Chamberlin said.
“It’s that combination of not just the university, but of local manufacturers and their capability.
“That’s the bit that makes it possible. It’s a local ecosystem — it takes a village.”

I was diagnosed with prostate ******* at 49. My life is different after treatment, and I’ve learned to embrace it.
I was diagnosed with prostate ******* at 49. My life is different after treatment, and I’ve learned to embrace it.
Henry Butler was diagnosed with an early stage of prostate ******* at age 49.
He was given a lot of treatment options and ultimately chose a prostatectomy.
It’s been five years since his surgery. While he’s physically back to normal, his life is forever changed.
This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Henry Butler, who is a prostate ******* survivor. He lives in the *** with his wife, where they run a wine shop together. The conversation has been edited for length and clarity.
When I found out I might have prostate *******, I was on holiday with my family, sitting on a boat.
I remember getting the phone call from my doctor saying that my PSA levels were slightly above what they should be for my age, and I should come in for more tests because it might be *******.
So that was fun.
When I got back, I returned to the doctor and got an internal examination with the finger up the backside. That’s when he said my prostate didn’t feel right on one side.
I wish I hadn’t had so many treatment options
I was diagnosed with early-stage prostate ******* in 2019 at age 49. I’d been taking antibiotics for a sinus infection, and suddenly started getting a lot of painful UTIs.
I never prioritized doctor visits before that, but my wife insisted I schedule an appointment. Thank goodness she did.
After my doctor felt my prostate, everything was fast-tracked. I had an MRI and two biopsies. My Gleason score, which measures how aggressive the ******* is, was around three or four — high enough to consider treatment.
I was given loads of options. I sort of expected the medical experts to tell me what treatment I should have, but it was the reverse. They said this needed to be my journey, and I had to choose.
In hindsight, I wish I hadn’t had all the options. My wife and I investigated them all, and I still wasn’t sure which was the right one.
Then, one day, I was in the hospital, and a urologist who had bought wine from us a couple of years back recognized me.
We got to talking, and he was the first doctor I really warmed to. He told me straight up, “You’ve got ******* and we need to deal with it.” On hearing that, I just thought, “You’re the man.”
We discussed the various options and ultimately decided to go with surgery.
I chose to cut out the *******
In spring 2020, I had a prostatectomy. The doctor said I was going to feel like I’d been hit by a train after the surgery, and he was right. Getting back on track wasn’t easy and took a full year.
Aside from the pain post-surgery, which got a little better each week, I had issues with incontinence and couldn’t get an *********. This didn’t make me feel like less of a man, though. I accepted that if there were changes, then I’d deal with it, and it would be fine.
I’ve got a friend who doesn’t want any treatment because I think he’s worried about how it would change him as a man. So he just monitors his PSA levels, but is constantly worried.
Physically, I’m back to normal
I struggled with incontinence during that first year post-surgery, but now I hardly think about it.
Sex was something my wife and I had to get used to, again. Part of my recovery involved taking Viagra every day for a year to help get everything back in working order.
My wife was worried about hurting me at first, and I was also nervous, but we got there eventually.
Physically, I’m almost completely back to normal, thanks to the incredible care I received and diligently following the recovery guidelines, like regularly walking, doing Kegel exercises, and staying positive.
However, this experience has changed my life.
My life is different after treatment
I started therapy for the first time in my life. A friend signed me up because I had the ******* thing going on, I had a couple of friends who had died, and business was struggling.
Turns out, I loved therapy. Off the back of that, I’m now in a men’s group.
Before all this, the thought of joining a men’s group sounded horrific. I didn’t want to sit around with a bunch of men and talk about, I don’t know, stuff. But it has been super rewarding.
You quickly realize that everyone’s had something going on — it’s not always *******, it can be another form of trauma. We talk about masculinity and how you deal with trauma mentally, and how you communicate with each other. That’s been a really good way of making connections with people.
I think that’s a big thing that’s changed in me. I’m better at keeping connections and being more open with my emotional side, which can be upsetting sometimes, but the benefits far outweigh the negatives. You get a lot back from people if you’re vulnerable.

Trump trade chaos: European Union in US President’s sights with another tax proposal
Trump trade chaos: European Union in US President’s sights with another tax proposal
Fears about President Donald Trump’s trade agenda have been reignited after threats of a 50 per cent tariff on the European Union and a tax on offshore production of Apple iPhones.
Mr Trump said Friday in a social media post that the higher charge on the EU would start on June 1 because “our discussions with them are going nowhere,” adding that he saw the bloc as “very difficult to deal with.”
“The president believes that the EU proposals have not been of the same quality that we’ve seen from our other important trading partners,” US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said on Fox News after Trump’s message, expressing hope “this would light a fire under the EU.”
Separately, Trump posted that he already told Apple the company’s popular smartphones should be made in the US and that he was nonplussed by its effort to partially move production from China to India.
He threatened a 25 per cent levy on the phones unless the company moved production to the United States.
Equities dropped across the globe, with the S&P 500 Index and the Stoxx Europe 600 Index each sinking about 1 per cent.
Apple led a selloff in tech, falling 2 per cent. The dollar slid toward its lowest since 2023 and Treasury yields plunged across the curve.
The president’s missives represented a fresh round of trade brinkmanship, after previously indicating he was looking to wind down talks with partners over his April 2 duties, which he paused for 90 days to allow for negotiations.
Mr Trump’s attention this week has mostly been focused on a massive tax and spending package currently being considered by the US Congress.
His latest posturing comes after the EU earlier this week shared a revived trade proposal with the US in a bid to jump-start talks.
The EU’s trade chief, Maros Sefcovic, is planning to hold a call with Jamieson Greer, his US counterpart, on Friday to take stock of negotiations, a European Commission spokesperson said before Trump’s post.
A spokesperson for the commission declined to comment on the president’s threat ahead of the discussion.
Irish Prime Minister Micheal Martin called Trump’s suggestion “enormously disappointing.”
“Tariffs are damaging to all sides,” Martin posted on X.
“A negotiated outcome is the best possible result for both sides, as well as for global trade.”
The latest tariff threat would hit $321 billion worth of US-EU goods trade, lowering US gross domestic product by close to 0.6 per cent and increasing consumer prices by more than 0.3 per cent, according to Bloomberg Economics calculations.
