  2. King prepares to give key speech backing Canada King prepares to give key speech backing Canada Sean Coughlan Royal correspondent PA Media King Charles met ********* PM Mark Carney soon after he arrived in Ottawa King Charles III will deliver a significant speech in Canada’s parliament later on Tuesday that is expected to offer his support in the country’s dispute with US President Donald Trump. The King and Queen Camilla received a warm welcome when they arrived in Ottawa, on the royal couple’s first trip to Canada since the start of their reign. Soon after arriving, the King, who is Canada’s head of state, held a meeting with Prime Minister Mark Carney, recently elected on a wave of anti-Trump public opinion. Carney has praised the “historic ties” that make up Canada’s independent identity, including the “vitality of our constitutional monarchy”, which he said “crises only fortify”. Watch: The King plants trees and meets locals on first day of Canada visit Carney invited the King to deliver the speech at the opening of parliament after his recent general election victory, in a campaign dominated by the threats to Canada’s sovereignty from Trump. It will be the first time in almost 50 years that a monarch gives the “Speech from the throne”, with the King’s decision to come to parliament in Ottawa seen as a symbolic show of support for Canada. The King’s speech will be written on the advice of the ********* government, with the expectation that it will send a clear, if diplomatic, message that the country is “not for *****” to the US. Carney said in advance that the speech, to be delivered in French and English, would match “the weight of our times”. On Monday afternoon, the King and Carney held a meeting at Rideau Hall, the residence of Canada’s governor-general, with both men sitting in front of ********* flags. There were also meetings with leaders of Canada’s indigenous and First Nations groups, including Cindy Woodhouse, the national chief of the Assembly of First Nations. Looking relaxed in the Ottawa sunshine, the King took part in a tree-planting ceremony, receiving an enthusiastic reception from onlookers, who cheered and crowded round to shake hands with him. “Canada feels threatened and scared. It is very important he is here,” said Theresa McKnight, from Mississauga, Ontario. Her sister Dianne St Louis from near Toronto agreed: “It’s critical. It means a great deal to have the King standing side by side with Canadians.” There had been a warm welcome at Ottawa airport, for what will be a visit of about 24 hours on the ground in Canada. Carney was on the runway to meet the royal visitors, with a welcoming party that included schoolchildren from English- and French-speaking schools and representatives of First Nations communities. A community event had also been a checklist of ********* moments, such as the King dropping a puck to start a game of street hockey and getting jars of maple syrup. But the main focus of this trip will be the historic speech on Tuesday, with the prospect of the King delivering the ********* government’s message of rejecting calls to become the US 51st state. It is also a diplomatic balancing act because in his role as head of state of the ***, the King has been part of an effort to keep good relations with Trump, including inviting him for a second state visit. But in Canada, the King will have to speak on behalf of Canada. As another bystander said at Rideau Hall: “Sovereignty is important and he is the epitome of that.” Source link #King #prepares #give #key #speech #backing #Canada Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content] For verified travel tips and real support, visit: [Hidden Content]

  4. Donald Trump grows angrier as Vladimir Putin exposes his impotence Donald Trump grows angrier as Vladimir Putin exposes his impotence As Washington settled in for a typically sleepy Memorial Day following the passage of Donald Trump’s “big, beautiful bill” in the House, the president fired off one of his trademark furious rants on Truth Social, but the target was a surprise. This time, the target wasn’t any of his domestic political foes — like the Democrats who voted in lockstep against the budget package he endorsed, or the handful of Republicans who refused to fall into line. It wasn’t even aimed at the various law enforcement figures who have attempted to hold him to account over the years. Sunday evening’s rant was aimed squarely at Russian President Vladimir Putin. Despite what he called a “very good relationship” with Putin, Trump in his latest statement on the Ukraine-Russia war blasted the Russian leader as “absolutely crazy.” “He is needlessly killing a lot of people, and I’m not just talking about soldiers. Missiles and drones are being shot into Cities in Ukraine, for no reason whatsoever,” Trump posted on Truth Social. “I’ve always said that he wants ALL of Ukraine, not just a piece of it, and maybe that’s proving to be right, but if he does, it will lead to the downfall of Russia!” Trump warned. He echoed the same thoughts as he spoke to reporters in New Jersey on Sunday ahead of his return to Washington that day. “He’s killing a lot of people,” said the president. “I don’t know what the hell happened to Putin, I’ve known him for a long time.” Donald Trump speaks to reporters on Sunday about the war in Ukraine (AFP via Getty Images) Trump sudden harsh turn was illuminative, if not for the reason he may have intended. A throwaway jab aimed at Ukraine’s Volodymyr Zelensky (“everything out of his mouth causes problems … it better stop”) in the same post solidified the underlying intention of the screed: Trump was massaging a bruised ego. With his pride wounded, Trump has turned to lashing out at the Russian leader who is now publicly refuting his repeated claim that he could end the destructive three-year-old conflict in “24 hours.” Four months after Trump took office, supposedly poised to immediately shut down the war, attacks on Ukrainian targets intensified over the weekend, with Russia launching its largest aerial assault of the war thus far. Loathe as he is to give Zelensky any credit for correctly predicting that Russia’s leadership had no real intentions of ending the war, Trump’s emotional outburst comes as he seems to be realizing that the issue could become a major blemish on the “dealmaker” perception he has sought to cultivate. More importantly than representing a threat to his ability to live up to his own boasting, the attacks also refute many of Trump’s more recent statements about the Russian president and his supposed desire to see the war end. Trump, who famously hates being made to look foolish by his allies, said as recently as last Monday of Putin: “I do believe he wants to end it.” But France’s president Emmanuel Macron believes Trump is beginning to realize the truth about Putin’s war stance. “I believe that President Trump has realized that when President Putin told him he was ready for peace, he was lying,” Macron said on Monday. He pointed to the severity of Russian offensives as the persuading factor. “You cannot claim to be ready for negotiations and carry out attacks at the same time. Such double rhetoric demonstrates the insincerity of any statements about dialogue,” said the French president. Volodymyr Zelensky, flanked by Keir Starmer and Emanuelle Macron (AFP/Getty) Now, Washington is already beginning to wonder if Trump will back up his rhetoric with action. He has repeatedly vowed to slap damaging sanctions on Russia if the invasion continues without a resolution, most recently doing so this month in an interview with Fox’s Bret Baier. But in a press gaggle days after those remarks, Trump also suggested that his administration may “just back away” from the conflict, which would “keep going” without U.S. involvement if a deal was not reached. Capitol Hill is not keen to let that happen — a bipartisan resolution to impose a new slate of sanctions on Russia hit 81 co-sponsors in the Senate last Wednesday, according to a press release from joint co-sponsors Lindsey Graham and Richard Blumenthal. The bill, which is designed to be snapped into place if peace talks fall apart, would slap sanctions on a range of Russian top ministers, as well as on businesses and entities that transact with the Russian armed forces. “Russia has agreed to provide its term sheet for a ceasefire in the next few days. Its contents will speak volumes as to whether or not Russia is serious about peace. We suspect it will be more of the same,” the pair said in a joint statement. “If it is more of the same, Russia can expect decisive action from the United States Senate.” Source link #Donald #Trump #grows #angrier #Vladimir #Putin #exposes #impotence Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content] For verified travel tips and real support, visit: [Hidden Content]

On-duty navigator was allegedly asleep when cargo ship ran aground in Norway and nearly hit a house On-duty navigator was allegedly asleep when cargo ship ran aground in Norway and nearly hit a house OSLO, Norway (AP) — Norwegian prosecutors have charged a cargo ship’s on-duty navigator after he allegedly fell asleep on duty and the vessel ran aground, narrowly missing crashing into a home. The ship, the NCL Salten, ran aground shortly before 6 a.m. Thursday. No oil spills were reported, and none of the 16 people aboard was injured. Johan Helberg told Norwegian broadcaster NRK that he’d slept through the whole thing and only woke up when a neighbor started ringing his doorbell. Images show the ship’s red and green bow just meters (yards) from Helberg’s house along the Trondheim Fjord’s coast. The on-duty navigator was the ship’s second officer, prosecutor Kjetil Bruland Sørensen said in a statement. He was charged with negligent navigation; his name was not made public. Crews on Monday continued to take containers off the ship so it could be more easily removed from the area. NCL, the shipping company, said it was cooperating with investigators. 9. Streeting urges doctors to vote no in strike ballot Streeting urges doctors to vote no in strike ballot Health Secretary Wes Streeting has urged doctors in England to “vote no” in a ballot on industrial action which gets under way on Tuesday. In a BBC interview, he urged resident doctors, the new name for junior doctors, to “work with the government” and warned strikes risked hampering the progress being made in the NHS. He said it was in no-one’s interests for strikes to take place. Last week it was announced resident doctors would be getting a 5.4% average pay rise this year – more than other doctors, nurses and teachers. But resident doctors, who took part in 11 strikes in 2023 and 2024, said it was not enough to make up for below-inflation pay awards since 2008. The union is urging members to vote for industrial action, with sources saying strikes would be the likely action taken. This year’s pay rise comes after resident doctors were awarded rises worth 22% over the previous two years. Streeting agreed to that deal shortly after coming into office, ending a dispute which had lasted more than a year. Taking account of this year’s pay rise, it means the starting salary for a doctor fresh out of university has risen by £9,500 over the past three years to around £38,800, the government said. But the British Medical Association (BMA) said even after the latest pay rise another 20% was needed to bring wages back to where they were in 2008. Resident doctors’ committee co-chairs Dr Melissa Ryan and Dr Ross Nieuwoudt said: “We are urging doctors to vote yes to strike action. “By voting yes they will be telling the government there is no alternative to fixing pay – this cannot wait for different fiscal circumstances and a healthier NHS. The answer is to fix it today.” The vote on industrial action runs until 7 July. Streeting said his door was always open but added there was no more money to increase salaries above the latest award. And he said a fresh bout of strikes would put attempts to rebuild the NHS at risk. Speaking to the BBC, Streeting said: ” I don’t think strikes are in their interests, in patients interests and I certainly don’t think it’s in the interest of the NHS overall.” Streeting has often cited the deal he reached last year to end the previous round of strikes as evidence of the government’s ability to reform the health service and cut waiting lists. Meanwhile, BMA sources said consultants were likely to start a dispute process over their 4% rise – the first step towards moving to an industrial action ballot. Other staff including nurses, midwives and physios have been given a 3.6% increase. The Royal College of Nursing said it was “grotesque” nurses were getting less than doctors for the second year in a row. The Scottish government has agreed a deal worth 8% over two years with health unions representing all staff apart from doctors and dentists. There have been no strikes by health workers in Scotland. 13. Royal Caribbean warns cruisers about deadly disease Royal Caribbean warns cruisers about deadly disease These days, most people understand the general risk of illness that comes with bringing a large number of people together into a semi-enclosed space like a cruise ship. Many people don’t realize though that cruise ship hot tub use can potentially increase their risk of becoming ill from a disease that isn’t spread through person-to-person contact. Related: CDC says throw this food out after salmonella sickens cruisers Over the last couple of years, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has been working to educate cruise lines about the increased risk for Legionella bacteria growth in private-balcony hot tubs. When Legionella bacteria grows in hot tub water systems, it can be transmitted to hot tub users through inhaled water droplets. In some cases, cruise passengers exposed to the bacteria later become sick with Legionnaires’ disease, a severe type of pneumonia. Although rare, Legionnaires’ disease is a growing health concern for cruise passengers because private-balcony hot tubs have become a popular amenity on many newer cruise ships. Since private-balcony hot tubs aren’t used as often as public ones, their maintenance requirements typically aren’t as strict, which can create conditions favorable for Legionella bacteria growth. Sign up for the Come Cruise With Me newsletter to save money on your next (or your first) cruise. Royal Caribbean continues to warn passengers about Legionnaires’ disease Over the last few months, Royal Caribbean has been notifying passengers on multiple cruises about a recent case of Legionnaires’ disease, according to RoyalCaribbeanBlog.com, an unofficial fan blog not affiliated with the cruise line. “The CDC has advised that while they are unsure where exposed, a guest who recently sailed on Symphony of the Seas was later diagnosed with Legionella,” Royal Caribbean informed passengers. Royal Caribbean sent a similar notification to Symphony of the Seas’ passengers in January after two other passengers fell ill with the disease after sailing on the ship in late 2024. Related: Here’s when Royal Caribbean can cancel your cruise vacation Symphony of the Seas is not the only cruise ship to be associated with the disease, however. In October 2024, the CDC reported that it was notified of 12 cases of Legionnaires’ disease among travelers sailing on two cruise ships from separate cruise lines between November 2022 and June 2024. Their investigation linked both cruise ship Legionnaires’ disease outbreaks to private-balcony hot tubs. Be the first to see the best deals on cruises, special sailings, and more. Sign up for the Come Cruise With Me newsletter. What cruisers should know about Legionnaires’ disease and hot tubs It’s important for cruisers to know that private-balcony hot tubs are more likely to experience Legionella growth than public hot tubs found in common areas because they are not required to be disinfected as frequently as public ones. The CDC has been working to ensure that cruise lines understand the hot tub features that increase the risk for Legionella growth and transmission, and how cruise lines can adapt maintenance and operations protocols to reduce that risk. “Royal Caribbean is working hard to protect the health of guests and crew onboard Symphony of the Seas,” the cruise line assured passengers in its recent Legionnaires’ disease notification emails. The cruise line informed passengers that it stepped up its sanitation efforts as a precautionary measure and followed all CDC guidance. Related: Princess Cruises ship gets banned from entering Caribbean port Although most healthy people who are exposed to Legionella do not get sick, some people are at an increased risk including current and former smokers, adults over 50, and people with specific health issues or conditions. Legionnaires’ disease symptoms include cough, shortness of breath, fever, muscle aches, and headaches. “If you experience these symptoms and have concerns, please reach out to your preferred medical professional,” the cruise line urged. 16. Socceroos forward Brandon Borrello says focus on Japan ahead of crucial two-game World Cup qualifying window Socceroos forward Brandon Borrello says focus on Japan ahead of crucial two-game World Cup qualifying window With a FIFA World Cup berth on the line in their upcoming two-game window, Socceroos forward Brandon Borrello says they are not looking beyond their blockbuster qualifier in Perth. And Borrello says the national team are reaping the rewards of their 10-day camp in Abu Dhabi as they prepare for their qualification campaign’s defining double-header against Japan and Saudi Arabia. Victory against Japan at Optus Stadium would all but clinch a spot at the 2026 tournament for Australia, barring a thrashing against Saudi Arabia in their final group game in Jeddah. Even a point against the Blue Samurai next Thursday might be enough to secure qualification if Saudi Arabia are unable to beat Bahrain a few hours later. With the Socceroos nursing a three-point lead over Saudi Arabia in the race for the final qualifying spot, the pair’s clash looms as decisive — but Borrello said the focus was all on game one in WA. “The mindset is, we play Japan, and that’s it for now until Japan’s done; then we go play Saudi,” he said. “It’s just taking it one game at a time. It sounds cliche, but it drowns out the noise, so our focus is Japan right now and then we’ll reassess where we are for Saudi.” It has been almost a week since the Socceroos assembled in Abu Dhabi and Borrello said the opportunity to have such a long lead-in under coach Tony Popovic before the two pivotal games was helpful. “How often do you have the chance to have this extended ******* of time with a team before leading into World Cup qualifiers or a tournament?” he said. “We’re pretty lucky in that sense and the boss is very specific to detail. We’re getting that drummed into us now, the style of play, because obviously it’s a new bunch of boys. “We’ve got players returning that haven’t been a part of the squads for a while and we’ve got new players as well, so it’s a big combination of staying fit, understanding the style that we want to play leading into Japan and the Saudi games. “We’ve had time to sit down and analyse how it is that he (Popovic) wants us to play and when we step out on the pitch, it takes maybe one or two days to understand the patterns of play. Camera IconBrandon Borrello in Abu Dhabi with the Socceroos. Credit: Francois Nel/Getty Images “They might look maybe a little bit clunky, but then after that, day-by-day, it starts to become a lot more fluid, which is a lot quicker than what was to be expected.” Borrello has played 13 times for the national team but has never featured in a major tournament and the Western Sydney forward is understandably eager to change that ahead of Popovic naming his squad for the two games towards the end of the week. “There is an element of fitness, but it’s also intensity and training and doing the things the boss wants under that sort of environment,” he said. “You go out into training and whether it’s just a short session that’s been planned, it’s always ‘do it at game speed’, which is probably one of the biggest things we need to get done over here, considering the climate we could be playing in Saudi Arabia.” Source link #Socceroos #Brandon #Borrello #focus #Japan #ahead #crucial #twogame #World #Cup #qualifying #window Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

  18. What you may have missed in Berkshire’s last annual meeting under Buffett What you may have missed in Berkshire’s last annual meeting under Buffett It’s confirmed Warren Buffett won’t take the stage at Berkshire Hathaway ‘s annual meeting next year, with the Oracle of Omaha set to step down as CEO at the end of 2025. The investment sage, who turns 95 in August, is handing over the reins after a legendary six-decade run at the conglomerate. Its annual meetings, known as “Woodstock for Capitalists,” is a chance for Buffett to share his views on markets, investing and life in general. This year, he made headlines by opining on global trade policy, the market’s recent volatility and much more. For Buffett admirers reminiscing at next year’s bittersweet gathering, here are some highlights from the 2025 meeting that might have gone overlooked. Real estate is harder than stocks On the topic of real estate, Buffett admitted he’s not a huge fan, especially when compared to equities. He believes that the stock market offers more opportunities and greater ease of execution, unlike real estate, which involves lengthy negotiations, many complexities and is notoriously difficult to buy and sell. “In respect to real estate, it’s so much harder than stocks in terms of negotiation of deals, time spent, the involvement of multiple parties in the ownership, usually,” Buffett said. “When you walk down to the New York Stock Exchange you can do billions of dollars worth of business totally anonymous and you can do it in five minutes, and the trades are complete when they’re complete.” Buffett revealed that the late Charlie Munger, his longtime business partner, enjoyed real estate transactions, and did a fair number of them in the last five years of his life. Finding Japanese investments in a handbook Buffett first unveiled investments in five Japanese trading companies on his 90th birthday in August 2020. He has since increased those holdings in Mitsui, Mitsubishi, Sumitomo, Itochu and Marubeni to about 10%, saying Berkshire intends to hold on to them for 50 years or more. One little-known fact he revealed at the annual meeting was that he discovered the trading houses, known as “sogo shosha,” in a handbook describing thousands of companies in Japan. “I was just going through a little handbook that probably had 2,000 or 3,000 Japanese companies in it,” Buffett said. “One problem I have is that I can’t read that handbook anymore. The print’s too small. And there were these five trading companies. They have a special name for them in Japan, but they were selling at ridiculously low prices.” Made most money on 8 ideas over 50 years In investing, Buffett believes the greatest success comes from only a handful of home runs. In fact, he said, quoting Munger, Berkshire made most of its money on about eight or nine ideas over 50 years. “If you get real opportunities every five or six years…, you have to be patient,” Buffett said. “We talked about it every day and we read every report and we did everything else, but if you think you can get an idea a day from listening to your friendly broker or doing a lot of reading of the financial information published … forget it, because every now and then you get extraordinary opportunities, and most of the time you don’t have much of an edge.” Buffett noted that the one problem with the investment business is that opportunities don’t come along in an orderly fashion. Insurance float is ‘absolutely free money’ Buffett also touted Berkshire’s unmatched amount of float that its insurance empire generates . Float refers to the money an insurance company holds temporarily between collecting premiums from policyholders and paying out claims. “There’s no property casualty company that has our float,” Buffett said. “That is money that (as long as we’re writing it and underwriting profit), is absolutely free money. And we would expect that over a 50-year, hundred-year *******, that we would be able to say the same thing.” Buffett cautioned that there will be years when Berkshire has a bad underwriting record, which would eat into the float earnings. However, in the last 20 years, he said the firm has only suffered one annual underwriting loss. “It’s like running a bank, where people leave their money with you and you pay them minus 2.2% and you don’t have any check clearing or anything else to do, and it’s included in that total. But we run our business actually with a different mindset than any other PC company I think probably in the world,” he said. Reading balance sheets Buffett, with a history of identifying opportunities by reading company reports and filings, noted that balance sheets — highlighting assets and liabilities — offer more insight into companies’ health than income statements. “That’s one thing we’ve really never talked about here, but I spend more time looking at balance sheets than I do income statements. And Wall Street really doesn’t pay much attention to balance sheets,” he said. “But I like to look at balance sheets over an eight- or ten-year ******* before I even look at the income account, ’cause there are certain things it’s harder to hide or play games with on the balance sheet than you can with the income statement.” Source link #missed #Berkshires #annual #meeting #Buffett Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content] For verified travel tips and real support, visit: [Hidden Content]

  21. Apprenticeship shakeup to shift focus to under-21s Apprenticeship shakeup to shift focus to under-21s The government is promising more training for under-21s in England, as it presses ahead with controversial plans to scrap funding for postgraduate apprenticeships. Only students under the age of 21 will qualify for funding for level 7 apprenticeships – the highest level, considered equivalent to a master’s degree – under the plans confirmed on Tuesday. This means many higher apprenticeships would have to be completely paid for by employers. The Conservatives have previously described the proposals as a disaster which could undermine advanced NHS training. Apprenticeships in England are available for those aged 16 and over, and combine practical training in a job with study. They take between one and five years to complete, depending on their level. A level 2 apprenticeship is considered the equivalent of a GCSE, while 6 and 7 are considered equivalent to a bachelor’s or master’s degree. Overall the government is promising to create 120,000 more training opportunities for young adults, and those who need to retrain. An increase in a charge paid by employers recruiting from outside the *** will be used to create 45,000 training places, building on existing programmes aimed at helping adults get into work. The big shift in Tuesday’s announcement is to pull funding from the highest level apprenticeships, equivalent to a postgraduate or masters degree. These level 7 apprenticeships are used by people training in a wide variety of roles, including accountants, tax advisors and solicitors, most of whom are already in work. They are also a significant part of some NHS advanced training, such as for district nurses who want to a more specialist qualification. Since an apprenticeship levy for large employers was introduced in 2017, there has been a ***** in higher qualifications at degree or postgraduate level, called level 6 or level 7. However, the numbers of young adults starting entry apprenticeships at level 2 has fallen. Tuesday’s announcement is an attempt to push more of the money generated by the apprenticeship levy paid to government towards those under the age of 21. Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson said “When we invest in skills for young people, we invest in a shared, stronger economic future.” But Neil O’Brien, shadow education minister, said: “The decision to scrap higher apprenticeships will do damage to the public services, particularly the NHS. “It will make it impossible for many young people who don’t go university to enter the professions.” Among the other changes are seven new foundation apprenticeships in sectors such as health and social care, engineering and construction. These are at the level of GCSEs and are intended to provide a broad introduction to work before students specialise. Young adults could then go on to study for specific jobs. Chachomwe Chiwaya, who is doing a level 2 apprenticeship in hospitality at Leeds City College, told BBC News the course and the experience of working front-of-house in a café has given her more self-belief. “I’ve not always been as confident as I am now,” the 21-year-old says. “I’ve always been a shy kid growing up, so it takes a while for my confidence to grow. “But with this apprenticeship, it gets me out of my comfort zone, it gets me talking to customers, and I’ve made some good relationships with them.” She says she dreams of working abroad in a hotel, either as a receptionist or restaurant staff, or on a cruise ship – “anything that let’s me see the world”, she says. 22. Donkey Kong Country Has The Best Attraction In Super Nintendo World Donkey Kong Country Has The Best Attraction In Super Nintendo World Universal Studios’ brand-new theme park, Epic Universe, opened its gilded gates to the public last Thursday. This fourth park offers five new themed destinations such as Harry Potter: Ministry of Magic, How to Train Your Dragon: Trial of Berk, and Dark Universe, themed after Universal classic monster flicks. For video game fans, the most exciting destination is the Orlando version of the acclaimed Super Nintendo World. This is the third iteration of Nintendo’s Mario-focused theme park and only the second in the US, following the parks in Osaka and Los Angeles, respectively. However, the Epic Universe variant is the only North American location to feature the Donkey Kong Country Expansion, originally an Osaka-exclusive. I visited Universal Epic Universe during a special media event before its grand opening and spent several hours exploring every inch of the new park. Since we’ve extensively covered the Japan and California iterations of Super Nintendo World in the past, and the Orlando version is identical in size and scope to the Osaka park specifically (if not *******), this piece focuses squarely on my time exploring Donkey Kong’s US theme park debut. You can find the DK area towards the back of Super Nintendo World, with a big cave beckoning you to its jungle. It’s been stated that entering Super Nintendo World feels like stepping into a Mario game, and the same rings true when crossing the threshold to DK’s domain. If you love Donkey Kong Country as much as I do, the park is a joy to see as it nails the series’ aesthetic. Bright, colorful recreations of recognizable sights like DK’s treehouse, speakers blasting a rendition of the DK Island Swing theme on repeat, along with copious barrels, crates, and, of course, bananas, check all the boxes of the DKC checklist. The only downside is the lack of Tropical Freeze love; I didn’t see a single snowflake. I cannot abide such erasure. “Expansion” is an apt label for the area, given its small size. Featuring a single ride, two shops, a few minigames, and a meet-and-greet stage, you’re here for a good time but probably not a long one. Gawking at the sights, my eyes immediately focused on the towering Golden Temple at the end of the area. This marks the home of Mine Cart Madness, a rollercoaster that wraps around half the park. Having ridden the kid-friendly Yoshi’s Adventure and AR-centric Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge in the main area, Mine Kart Madness is easily my favorite attraction in all of Super Nintendo World. As the line takes players through a golden interior filled with primate statues and wall paintings, you eventually encounter an impressive animatronic of Cranky Kong, who regales visitors about a stolen golden banana ****** to his parrot, Squawks. It’s strange hearing Cranky speak English instead of his usual shrill grunts, but it was cool to see a presumably life-sized version of the OG Kong rocking in his chair. The ride itself is modeled after the fun and infamously difficult mine cart levels from the Donkey Kong Country games. Up to four riders hop in a cart, and after a quick cameo from Dixie Kong, who cheerily greets riders as they pull out of the station, you’ll take a short climb before flying down and around a surprisingly fast trek. It’s an entertaining and appropriately chaotic romp, taking you through a mine shaft and eventually across a raging river. A near head-on collision with Donkey and Diddy early on legitimately made my heart jump. Presentation-wise, I love how the ride features broken track segments a la the games, and I wondered how our cart navigated these sections. The answer is actually quite simple, but I’ll leave that up to you to figure out if you visit. Mine Cart Madness may not feature steep drops or flip riders upside down, but it’s easily the best thrill ride in Super Nintendo World. I rode it five times. I adore rollercoasters, and I’d classify it as a medium intensity experience; maybe a bit much for very young riders, but older kids or those averse to ******* coasters can enjoy this. However, it is a very bumpy ride, and I can’t tell if that’s by design. One section that saw riders moving side to side between broken tracks had me slamming somewhat unpleasantly against the sides of the cart. It’s a fun ride, but I wouldn’t recommend hopping aboard if you just ate. Like Super Nintendo World proper, attendees can play mini-games around the park. You’ll need to purchase a Power-Up Band to fully enjoy these activities, which reward coins and achievements for everything you do, tracked on the Universal Studios mobile app. I enjoyed seeking out scattered KONG letters, though they’re relatively easy to find given the area’s small size. A ******* challenge comes in collecting puzzle pieces, which can only be obtained by using the Power-Up Band to scan certain objects bearing the DK seal. These require a sharper eye to spot and are very easy to miss. One balloon-topped barrel with a touchscreen offers a roulette game, with players touching the screen to stop fast-moving icons such as a banana coin, balloon, and even the Mirror Mode item from Donkey Kong Country Returns in a nice deep cut. Getting an icon rewards its sticker on the app, so you’ll need to play multiple times (at least five) to get them all. The best and most involved game comes in the form of a rhythm challenge. Three pairs of bongos sit in front of a crate bearing the stamp of Rambi the Rhino. Up to three people can work together to hit the bongos to the beat of a song playing through nearby speakers. Even if you’re rhythmically gifted, this can be tough to pull off depending on the crowd noise, which can muffle the music cues. I struggled to hear them with the visitor capacity at barely a fraction of what it likely is now (i.e., hundreds). A pair of lights flashing in sync with the beat and park attendants guiding us help, especially since you can fail this challenge. But if you can stay on beat, you’re rewarded with Rambi popping out of the box to grace you with his horned presence. This game is as fun to play as it is to watch, and the fact that you can lose makes it entertaining to see others attempt to coax Rambi out of his box. Beyond the ride and minigames, you can meet Donkey Kong at designated times under his treetop home. It’s an impressive and very large mascot suit, and I appreciate that the park employees are more than happy to shoot photos and videos of your interactions with the big lug. I shared a fist bump and a big, hairy hug. I think he liked me. If your money needs a new home, Funky’s Fly ‘n’ Buy, a shop modeled after Funky Kong’s airplane, offers a nice selection of DK-branded merch (which you can also grab at the Nintendo store outside Super Nintendo World). For those with a sweet tooth or who want to cool down from what will be a scorching Florida summer, The Bubbly Barrel offers a single, exclusive treat: the DK Crush Float. This towering treat consists of banana and pineapple flavored soft serve ice cream mixed with pineapple soda, topped with sprinkles, toffee pieces, and caramel popcorn. It’s served in a waffle bowl, which you can carry in a plastic cup (for $12.99) or in a collectible DK barrel mug ($18.99). I suspect the latter will be the more popular option because you can keep and reuse the cool DK mug. I didn’t sample this treat – I could feel my blood sugar spiking just looking at it – but it looked delicious and seemed substantial enough to (mostly) justify the price. Weirdly, neither shop accepts bananas as payment, which seems like a major breach of the immersion. It may not be big, but Donkey Kong Country is a very cool expansion to Super Nintendo World. As someone who loves exciting rides more than anything else at theme parks, Mine Cart Madness is an excellent addition, especially if you’re underwhelmed by the Yoshi and Mario Kart rides like I was. Otherwise, it’s another fun recreation of one of my favorite platforming series, and it has the (likely intended) effect of making me more excited to play Donkey Kong Bananza later this summer. I don’t know if or when we’ll get another park expansion (Zelda, please) like this to Super Nintendo World, but Donkey Kong Country is a strong start. 23. Ex-minister calls on PM to ‘move beyond words’, floats Israel sanctions Ex-minister calls on PM to ‘move beyond words’, floats Israel sanctions Ex-minister Ed Husic has called on Anthony Albanese to “move beyond words” after the Prime Minister unleashed on Israel for keeping a stranglehold on Gaza aid. Fewer than 700 aid trucks have entered Gaza since Israel lifted a months-long blockade last week, according to Israeli authorities. But aid groups, UN officials and many of Israel’s allies – including Australia – have said it was not enough to support the more than two million Palestinians facing famine and rampant disease. Mr Husic, who lost his cabinet spot in the factional fighting that reshaped Mr Albanese’s second-term ministry, said on Tuesday it “certainly was important that the Prime Minister speak with the strength that he applied yesterday” but there was an “expectation” Australia would do more. “I thought it was a very important intervention,” Mr Husic told the ABC. “I think that it is critical we also appreciate the huge community sentiment that exists that has been propelled as a result of seeing what’s happening to children in Gaza, that the most vulnerable are being made to pay the heaviest price for the operations being undertaken by the Israeli government. Camera IconEx-minister Ed Husic has called on Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to ‘move beyond words’ on Israel. NewsWire / Philip Gostelow Credit: News Corp Australia “I think we’ve got to the threshold where there is an expectation we move beyond words, and that we start to think along the lines of others, other friends in the international community, which will shape up ways in which we will now progress from talk to action, to be able to do whatever we can with others, to be able to bring about an end particularly … in the short term, the blockade that has affected so many.” Mr Husic said moving “beyond words” looked like “calling in the Israeli ambassador to stress that Australia … expects that humanitarian aid, particularly medical supplies, be delivered” as well as a boost to Australia’s humanitarian support for Gazans. He also said he suspected internationally co-ordinated sanctions on Israel were “under active consideration”. “It’s clear that, from the statement issued by the ***, Canada and France, that that is obviously in their sphere of thought we should be ready to move when others move as well, to be able to exert maximum international pressure to stop this blockade and to help people in Gaza,” Mr Husic said.
