3 more of the 10 escapees from a New Orleans jail are captured, leaving 2 on the run, officials say
3 more of the 10 escapees from a New Orleans jail are captured, leaving 2 on the run, officials say
NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Three more of the 10 inmates who escaped from a New Orleans jail earlier this month were re-arrested Monday in two different states after more than a week on the lam, authorities said.
One of the men was arrested in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, by local police and two others were arrested in Walker County, Texas, by officials there, Louisiana State Police posted on the platform X.
Two more inmates are still on the run, state police said. No other details were immediately released about Monday’s arrests.
Authorities have been scouring the New Orleans area for the men after they escaped in an audacious May 16 jailbreak. The men yanked open a faulty cell door inside a jail, squeezed through a hole behind a toilet, scaled a barbed-wire fence and fled into the coverage of darkness.
The inmates’ absence wasn’t discovered until a morning headcount, hours after they bolted for freedom. Graffiti left on the wall included the message “To Easy LoL,” with an arrow pointing to the gap.
City and state officials have pointed to multiple security lapses in the jail.
Louisiana authorities named the latest inmates who were recaptured as Lenton Vanburen, Leo Tate and Jermaine Donald. Jail escapees Dkenan Dennis, Corey Boyd, Gary C. Price, Kendell Myles and Robert Moody were previously taken into custody by authorities.
Many of the men were originally in the New Orleans jail awaiting sentences or trials for alleged violent crimes including *******.
After the escape, a jail maintenance worker was arrested and accused of turning off the water to the toilet, an act authorities said helped the men get out. The worker said he had been threatened by one of the inmates if he refused to do so.
In addition, four other people have been arrested for allegedly helping the inmates once they were on the loose.

Jacqui Lambie wins crucial sixth Senate spot, beating out One Nation’s Lee Hanson
Jacqui Lambie has won the critical sixth Tasmanian Senate spot, beating Lee Hanson, the daughter of One Nation Leader Pauline Hanson.
The tight race was fought down to the wire, with the *********** Electoral Commission confirming the count on Tuesday morning.
Ms Lambie was elected alongside Labor senators Carol Brown and Richard Dowling, Greens senator Nick McKim, and Claire Chandler and Richard Colbeck from the Liberals.

The senate maverick entered parliament in 2013 under Clive Palmer’s Palmer United Party, however she disbanded from the outfit in 2014 to sit as an independent.
She was also forced to resign in November 2017, alongside several other parliamentarians, after it was revealed she had inherited British citizenship from her Scottish-born father.
Senator Lambie had previously declared this would be her final term as a politician if she were re-elected.

“My body is absolutely broken from what I went through with in the army and DVA (Department of Veteran’s Affairs), and I’m struggling now,” she told NewsWire ahead of the federal election.
Speaking to ABC in the days after the election, ACT independent senator David Pocock said it would “be a huge loss for the Senate,” if Senator Lambie were to be unseated.
“I’ve got so much respect for Jacqui, I loved getting to know her and working alongside her,” he said.
“There (were) many things that we disagree on but where there (was) common ground, I worked a lot alongside her and she is a powerful voice.
“She brings a voice of reason at times and it’s actually saying the kinds of things that resonate with people, cuts through the political jargon and political spin that I think more and more people are getting sick (of)”.

Speaking to Sky News shortly after election day, Senator Hanson accused Senator Lambie of not being across policy, and said Lee would have had a more emphatic win if she had longer to campaign.
The controversial politician previously told news.com.au “I want to see her gone,” adding that she had “had enough” of Senator Lambie.
“(Lee) had a four week campaign. That’s all she had,” Senator Hanson told Sky News.
“People are so disgruntled with her (Senator Lambie), and she’s against the salmon industry.
“She’s throwing, you know the baby of the bath water without (doing any consulting and finding out) what can we do to save 5000 workers to do with the salmon industry.”

Jake Tapper Says Cover-Up of Biden’s Mental Decline ‘May Be Even Worse Than Watergate’
Jake Tapper Says Cover-Up of Biden’s Mental Decline ‘May Be Even Worse Than Watergate’
CNN anchor Jake Tapper said the cover-up of former President Joe Biden’s cognitive decline while he was in the White House was “maybe even worse than Watergate” in an interview with Piers Morgan on Monday.
Tapper said the reason the hiding of Biden’s health issues was a ******* deal than the scandal that brought down Richard Nixon’s presidency was because Nixon “was in control of his faculties when he was not drinking.”
Biden, Tapper has said several times on his recent media tour, was showing routine signs of a man who was suffering from a cognitive decline, including forgetting the names of aides and celebrity supporters like George Clooney. A moment earlier, Morgan said he believed the secrecy around the ex-president’s health was a ******* offense than Watergate.
Tapper was on Morgan’s “Uncensored” YouTube show to promote his new book, “Original Sin,” which looked at the cover up of Biden’s health while in office; he was joined by his co-author Alex Thompson.
The veteran CNN anchor said several people played a key role in keeping Biden’s health a secret, including his wife Jill, who was “enamored” with the lifestyle of being the First Lady, he said.
Tapper also said Biden’s son Hunter was in favor of keeping it a secret to help safeguard him against a federal investigation into his taxes and illegally buying a gun. “The best way that they could protect [Hunter Biden] was to keep the presidency so that they could protect him,” Tapper said.
The two authors have been on an extensive media tour to promote “Original Sin” in the past few weeks.
Last week on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” Tapper said there were “two Joe Bidens” and that the “non-functioning” version was seen more and more as his presidency went on — culminating in his disastrous debate performance against Donald Trump in June 2024. Less than a month later, Biden ended his campaign.
Tapper, during an interview on his own channel, said there was was “not enough” coverage of Biden’s health issues, including from himself.
And last Tuesday, while appearing on Megyn Kelly’s show, Tapper said he called Lara Trump to apologize to her, after he ripped her in 2020 for claiming Biden was showing signs of cognitive decline. “She saw something that I did not see at the time,” Tapper said. “100 percent. And I own that.”
He made a similar comment to Morgan on Monday, saying a lot of voters could see “what was in front of their nose, [and] our nose” with regards to Biden’s health decline, “so kudos to everybody who was right on target.”
To hear more of what Morgan thinks of Biden, Trump, CNN, and the royal family, check TheWrap tomorrow to read a full interview.

China’s industrial profits rose in April from a year earlier, official data showed Tuesday, despite prohibitive U.S. tariffs and persistent deflationary pressures.
Cumulative profits at major industrial firms climbed 3% in April after returning to growth in the first quarter of this year, rising 0.8% from a year earlier, reversing the trend of declines since the third quarter of last year.
In the first four months this year, industrial profits rose 1.4%, the data showed.
U.S. President Donald Trump slapped eye-watering tariffs of 145% on imports from China last month, drawing Beijing to retaliate, effectively amounting to a mutual trade embargo between the world’s two largest economies.
Both sides agreed to lower most of those levies earlier this month, following a trade truce struck during a meeting between the Trump administration and ******** leadership in Geneva, Switzerland.
U.S. tariffs on goods imported from China have fallen to 51.1% while China’s levies on U.S. imports stand at 32.6%, according to think tank Peterson Institute for International Economics.
China’s manufacturing activity fell more than expected to a 16-month low in April, with the official purchasing managers’ index coming in at 49.0, sliding into contractionary territory for the first time this year.
Retail sales growth slowed to 5.1% from a year earlier while industrial output expanded 6.1% on year, underscoring the persisting supply-demand imbalance in the economy.
Exports to the U.S. plunged over 21% from a year earlier as the triple-digit tariffs kicked in, while overall exports surged 8.1% on the back of a jump in shipments to Southeast Asian nations.

Trump says he’s pardoning Scott Jenkins, a sheriff convicted of taking $75,000 in bribes
Trump says he’s pardoning Scott Jenkins, a sheriff convicted of taking $75,000 in bribes
President Trump said Monday he is pardoning Scott Jenkins, a former Virginia sheriff who was convicted of making several businessmen sworn law enforcement officers in exchange for cash bribes.
Former Culpeper County Sheriff Jenkins, 53, was found guilty on fraud and bribery charges and sentenced to 10 years in prison in March. But on Monday, Mr. Trump posted on Truth Social that Jenkins and his family “have been dragged through HELL by a Corrupt and Weaponized Biden DOJ.”
“This Sheriff is a victim of an overzealous Biden Department of Justice, and doesn’t deserve to spend a single day in jail. He is a wonderful person, who was persecuted by the Radical Left “monsters,” and “left for dead,” Mr. Trump said in the post. “He will NOT be going to jail tomorrow, but instead will have a wonderful and productive life.”

CBS News has reached out to Jenkins’ attorneys for comment.
Jenkins was indicted in 2023 on 16 counts. In December, a jury found Jenkins guilty of one count of conspiracy, four counts of honest services fraud and seven counts of bribery. Jenkins appealed his conviction in April.
Federal prosecutors say Jenkins took $75,000 worth of bribes. He allegedly accepted cash and campaign contributions from eight people — including two undercover FBI agents — and in return, gave them badges and made them auxiliary deputy sheriffs, despite not having any training or vetting. He also allegedly pushed officials to restore one bribe-payer’s right to possess a gun as a convicted felon.
Jenkins took the stand in his own defense and said there was no connection between the payments he received and the badges he handed out, according to news reports. Testifying against Jenkins were the undercover FBI agents who were sworn in as deputies in 2022 and immediately thereafter gave Jenkins envelopes with $5,000 and $10,000 cash, respectively.
Trump said Jenkins tried to offer evidence in his defense, but U.S. District Judge Robert Ballou, a Biden appointee, “refused to allow it, shut him down, and then went on a tirade.”
Acting United States Attorney Zachary T. Lee said at the time that Jenkins violated his oath of office “and this case proves that when those officials use their authority for unjust personal enrichment, the Department of Justice will hold them accountable.”
A longstanding Trump supporter, Jenkins is the latest ally of the president to receive a pardon.
On Mr. Trump’s first day in office, he granted pardons and commutations to more than 1,000 people charged in the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot.
Mr. Trump has also granted clemency to several other public officials. He pardoned Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich, who was convicted of trying to sell Barack Obama’s Senate seat, and Michelle Fiore, a Las Vegas politician and loyal Trump backer convicted of paying for plastic surgery and other personal expenses with money intended to build a statue for a slain police officer.

Dow, S&P 500, Nasdaq futures leap as EU tariff delay bolsters market optimism
Dow, S&P 500, Nasdaq futures leap as EU tariff delay bolsters market optimism
US stock futures jumped Monday night following President Trump’s decision to delay a broad 50% tariff on all EU products from June to July to allow time for negotiations.
Futures tied to the Dow Jones Industrial Average (YM=F) rose 0.9%, with S&P 500 contracts (ES=F) flying up 1.1%. Futures for the tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 (NQ=F) surged 1.3%.
The jumps followed Trump’s Sunday announcement that he would postpone a 50% tariff on EU imports until July 9. The move came after a request from European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, who said in a post on X that the EU is ready to engage in swift and decisive negotiations.
Trump’s pledge for 50% tariffs on Friday led markets lower, with Memorial Day closures delaying market responses to the on-again, off-again levies. All three major indexes saw falls of at least 2% last week, with tariff uncertainty and debt concerns leading the negative sentiment.
Trump also aimed his ire at smartphone makers on Friday, declaring that a 25% duty would be placed on all imported smartphones, specifically urging companies like Apple (AAPL) and Samsung (005930.KS) to relocate production to the US.
Investors are now turning their attention to a busy week of economic data, including reports on durable goods orders, housing, and consumer confidence. Market watchers will also hear from Federal Reserve officials who are expected to hold rates steady in line with previous direction. Trump’s contentious tax bill is also on the docket, having narrowly made it through the US House last week.
Meanwhile, Nvidia (NVDA) is set to take the spotlight on Wednesday with the quarter’s most anticipated earnings results. Okta (OKTA), Macy’s (M), and Costco (COST) are also set to report this week.
LIVE COVERAGE IS OVER 1 update Gold slips as EU-*** trade talks lower demand
Gold (GC=F) has continued to pull back after a remarkable year-to-date run. After tariff uncertainty shook riskier assets, burgeoning trade talks between the EU and the US have cut into the demand for haven commodities.

Bounties back in vogue to cull feral goats, cats, pigs
Bounties back in vogue to cull feral goats, cats, pigs
Bounty hunters may be unleashed on feral cats and goats for the first time in years as a state government looks to “novel” ways to deal with pests.
NSW Premier Chris Minns on Tuesday threw his weight behind bounties, saying the state has to do better to control feral pest populations.
It comes after Victoria’s fox bounties wiped out more than 80,000 of the species in 2022 after hunters were rewarded between $10 to $14 per scalp.
“It’s about time we start thinking about novel ways of reducing the feral goat, the feral pig, the feral cat population, which has really taken over a lot of parks,” Mr Minns told Triple M Coffs Coast radio.
“We should be open to bounties and other things, because we’ve got a lot of recreational shooters out there that are actually getting rid of a lot of the pests roaming across our native vegetation.
“We can be doing far better on it.”
Nearly $1 billion is also being spent on prevention and protection against biosecurity threats in NSW.
Invasive species are the highest impact contributors of extinctions, directly endangering 70 per cent of threatened wildlife and ecosystems in the state.
Cats alone have played a major role in 25 mammal extinctions, including the lesser bilby, the Invasive Species Council says.
The premier highlighted the success of brumby culls in the Kosciuszko National Park, bringing the population down up to 80 per cent.
NSW Shooters, Fishers and Farmers Party leader Robert Borsak in January pressed for a $2 million bounty scheme, even backing novel approaches like Florida’s famed Python Challenge.
The annual 10-day competition – which even spawned a TV comedy, Killing It – draws hundreds of people to the Florida Everglades to exterminate invasive Burmese pythons.
Mr Borsak’s proposal involves a bounty of $10 or $20 per head being set on feral animals.
The CSIRO’s most recent best practice advice on pest management however says bounties rarely work.
Animal ******** groups oppose the practice while the Invasive Species Council compares it to “jailing the occasional dealer” in a drug epidemic.

The media company ranked the island off the coast of Rhode Island as the fifth best underrated destination in the list released May 12.
U.S. News and World Report uses both user and editors scores to rank vacation destinations. The destination’s user score is calculated by tallying the percentage of “yes” votes compared to the total votes a given destination receives. The editors’ score is based on the average score a destination receives on categories including sights, culture, adventure, and food.
Whether you want to bike, meet up with friends or view the waves, Block Island is a great summer destination.
Why is Block Island one of the best underrated travel destinations in the US?
U.S. News and World Report said that Block Island “remains an understated getaway for East Coasters.”
“The island’s 17 miles of beaches are largely undeveloped, and shorelines range from the rugged Mohegan Bluffs to the idyllic Crescent Beach,” said the ranking. “You can also bike to the historic Southeast and North lighthouses or take an aquarium tour at the Block Island Maritime Institute. Europe is already responding to Trump tariffs
Europe is already responding to Trump tariffs

French President Emmanuel Macron visiting Vietnam and Swedish automaker Volvo Cars laying off employees might not appear to have much in common.
But they are, on some level, strategic maneuvers in response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s deployment of 50% tariffs on the European Union, which he later delayed.
Macron sealed a deal with Vietnam for the Asian country to buy 20 jets from European planemaker Airbus, building on an earlier agreement for a similar quantity.
And Volvo Cars’ layoffs reflected growing pressure on the company to cut costs. The Swedish automaker has already pulled a China-made car completely out of the U.S. markets because of Trump’s tariffs on Beijing. The company, which is owned by China’s Geely Holding, also withdrew its financial guidance for both 2025 and 2026, citing tariff pressure on the automotive sector.
Hence, while there may be sighs of relief in Brussels for now, Trump’s tariff bluster will continue to roil the global economy and investor confidence.
What you need to know today
European auto stocks reboundU.S. futures jumped Monday night stateside on Trump’s delay of 50% tariffs on the European Union. Markets were closed Monday for the Memorial Day holiday. In Europe, the Stoxx 600 index added 0.99%, with all sectors in positive territory. European auto stocks rebounded from a 3% loss in the previous session to close 1.7% higher on Monday following news of the tariff postponement.
Rocky path ahead despite EU tariff delayInvestors cheered Trump’s delay of tariffs on the EU, driving U.S. futures and European markets higher. However, analysts are warning not to let optimism run unchecked. Berenberg Chief Economist Holger Schmieding told CNBC that even if a deal was struck to reduce import duties from the EU to 20% or 30%, “the EU would have no choice” but to impose “significant countermeasures” against the United States.
Vietnam agrees to buy 20 Airbus jetsDuring French President Emmanuel Macron’s state visit to Vietnam — the first by a French president in almost 10 years — the two countries signed an agreement to buy 20 Airbus A330neo planes, vaccines from French pharmaceutical company Sanofi and cooperate on nuclear energy, reported Reuters, citing a list of documents it had seen.
Volvo announces layoffsSweden-based automaker Volvo Cars on Monday said it would cut around 3,000 jobs, mostly office-based positions in Sweden, as part of a major cost-cutting drive. The move comes after the company, which is owned by China’s Geely Holding, announced an 18 billion Swedish kronor ($1.89 billion) cost and cash action plan late last month.

Joe Hockey reckons resources industry will help Australia get a better deal from Donald Trump
Joe Hockey reckons resources industry will help Australia get a better deal from Donald Trump
Anthony Albanese will get a better trade deal from Donald Trump by taking Woodside Energy, Rio Tinto and BHP to the meeting and spruiking *********** investment into the US, former ambassador Joe Hockey has declared.
The Prime Minister will be readying for a tough negotiation with the US President after the White House ramped up taxes on trading partners.
Beef sales and even the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme are expected to be in America’s sights.
But Mr Hockey told the *********** Energy Producers conference in Brisbane on Tuesday that Australia could leverage off the resources industry in talks.
Perth-based Woodside pressed go on the $27 billion Louisiana LNG project in April, marking a huge push into North America by the company.
ASX-listed Rio Tinto and BHP want to build the Resolution Copper project in Arizona, which would boost supply of a key mineral for the energy transition.
Asked whether Mr Albanese should take Woodside boss Meg O’Neill to the meeting, Mr Hockey said “absolutely”.
He said Mr Trump would “love” the cash being spent on the project — and added that mining giants BHP and Rio should also head to the White House.
“Louisiana is so important to the Republican Party and Woodside is investing in Louisiana,” Mr Hockey said.
“That will mean more to him than $200b going into California.”
He said the investments would “make a huge difference” to Mr Trump and that would “have a material outcome (for) Australia”.
Mr Hockey — also a former treasurer — brushed off concerns that the new administration might junk the AUKUS deal, the pact to buy nuclear submarines crucial for Australia’s defence.
“I can tell you, the president is absolutely committed — not to AUKUS, but committed to the fact that Australia is investing in the US submarine program and is going to get submarines in return,” he said.
“The transaction is more important than the written document.”
Australia will be in a huge ****** of countries trying to clean up Mr Trump’s trade mess after his administration sparked financial chaos with a shock bag of tax hikes in early April.
He has since dialled down the tariffs and agreed a 90-day negotiating ******* with China.
Mr Hockey was optimistic the fight between Mr Trump and China’s Xi Jinping would be resolved.
“The fundamental is that both know that they need each other,” he said.
“They cannot have growing economies without each other.”

Filmmaker who forced France to face its WWII past dies
Filmmaker who forced France to face its WWII past dies
Marcel Ophuls, the Academy Award-winning filmmaker whose landmark 1969 documentary The Sorrow and the Pity shattered the comforting myth that most of France had resisted the Nazis during World War II, has died at 97.
The *******-born filmmaker, who was the son of legendary filmmaker Max Ophuls, died on Saturday at his home in southwest France after watching one of his favourite films with his family, his grandson Andreas-Benjamin Seyfert told The Associated Press.
Though Ophuls would later win an Oscar for Hôtel Terminus (1988), his searing portrait of Nazi war criminal Klaus Barbie, it was The Sorrow and the Pity, that marked a turning point – not only in his career, but in how France confronted its past.
Deemed too provocative, too divisive, it was banned from French television for over a decade.
French broadcast executives said it “destroyed the myths the French still need” and did not air nationally until 1981.
But for a younger generation in a country still recovering physically and psychologically from the aftermath of the atrocities, the movie was a revelation – an unflinching historical reckoning that challenged both national memory and national identity.
The myth it punctured had been carefully constructed by Charles de Gaulle, the wartime general who led Free French forces from exile and later became president.
In the aftermath of France’s liberation in 1944, de Gaulle promoted a version of events in which the French had resisted Nazi occupation as one people, united in dignity and defiance.
Collaboration was portrayed as the work of a few traitors.
The Sorrow and the Pity, which was nominated for the 1972 Oscar for Best Documentary, told a different story: the film turned its lens on Clermont-Ferrand, a provincial town at the heart of France.
Through long, unvarnished interviews with farmers, shopkeepers, teachers, collaborators, members of the French Resistance – even the town’s former Nazi commander – Ophuls laid bare the moral ambiguities of life under occupation.
There was no narrator, no music, no guiding hand to shape the audience’s emotions – just people speaking plainly, awkwardly, sometimes defensively.
They remembered, justified and hesitated. And in those silences and contradictions, the film delivered its most devastating message: that France’s wartime story was not one of widespread resistance but of ordinary compromise – driven by fear, self-preservation, opportunism, and, at times, quiet complicity.
The film revealed how French police had aided in the deportation of Jews. How neighbours stayed silent. How teachers claimed not to recall missing colleagues. How many had simply got by, with resistance being the exception – not the rule.
In a 2004 interview Ophuls said. “Who can say their nation would have behaved better in the same circumstances?”
Born in Frankfurt on November 1, 1927, Marcel Ophuls was the son of legendary *******-Jewish filmmaker Max Ophuls and when Hitler came to power in 1933, the family fled Germany for France. In 1940, as Nazi troops approached Paris, they fled again — across the rugged Pyrenees into Spain, and on to the United States.
Many years later, Ophuls settled in a home overlooking those mountains.
He became an American citizen and later served as a US Army GI in occupied Japan. But it was his father’s towering legacy that shaped his early path.
He returned to France in the 1950s hoping to direct fiction, like his father. But after several poorly received features his path shifted to documentaries.
After The Sorrow and the Pity, Ophuls followed with The Memory of Justice (1976), a sweeping meditation on war crimes that examined Nuremberg but also drew uncomfortable parallels to atrocities in Algeria and Vietnam.
In Hôtel Terminus (1988), he spent five years tracking the life of Klaus Barbie, the so-called “Butcher of Lyon”, exposing not just his Nazi crimes but the role Western governments played in protecting him after the war.
The film won him his Academy Award for Best Documentary but, overwhelmed by its darkness, French media reported that he attempted suicide during production.
In The Troubles We’ve Seen (1994), he turned his camera on journalists covering the war in Bosnia, and on the media’s uneasy relationship with suffering and spectacle.
He was a man of contradictions: a Jewish exile married to a ******* woman who had once belonged to the Hitler Youth; a French citizen never fully embraced; a filmmaker who adored Hollywood, but changed European cinema by telling truths others wouldn’t.
He is survived by his wife, Régine, their three daughters, and three grandchildren.

1 Unstoppable Stock That Can Double Within Five Years to Join the $1 Trillion Club
1 Unstoppable Stock That Can Double Within Five Years to Join the $1 Trillion Club
This company plans to follow the same playbook that got it to $500 billion to reach $1 trillion.
Predictable revenue and expenses ensure this business grows earnings almost every year.
A $1 trillion valuation isn’t out of the realm of possibilities if management executes.
10 stocks we like better than Netflix ›
The $1 trillion club has invited quite a few new members through its doors since Apple first broke through its threshold in 2018. Ten companies traded on U.S. stock exchanges have qualified for membership since, and that number should continue to grow over time as the world economy expands.
But predicting the next member of the club isn’t easy. For example, few saw Nvidia growing beyond a $1 trillion valuation by 2023, fueled by the recent breakthroughs in generative artificial intelligence (AI). It’s now a $3 trillion company. One company, however, has its sights set on joining, and management thinks it can reach a $1 trillion level by 2030.
While management typically shouldn’t operate a business with a goal of reaching a certain stock price, this company has a systematic approach to increasing earnings every year, and it should eventually push it to double its stock price and reach a $1 trillion valuation. Here’s why Netflix (NASDAQ: NFLX) could be one of the next members of the vaunted club.
Netflix already boasts a $500 billion valuation as of this writing. That qualifies it as one of the biggest companies in the world, far larger than any other media company. But Netflix has a big advantage over traditional media — it’s not tied down by declining legacy operations like linear TV networks. That’s resulted in relatively consistent revenue growth.
As mentioned earlier, Netflix has taken a systematic approach to growing its business. Since it operates a subscription business with a direct line to its customers, its revenue is fairly predictable. It plans content expenses well in advance of when they hit its income statement through long-term licenses and, increasingly, its own productions. As a result, it’s able to set a target operating margin each year, and it consistently comes very close to that target.
As a result, Netflix has increased its operating margin from 13% in 2019 to 26.7% in 2024. For 2025, management is targeting 29%. Its first-quarter results exceeded that level and management expects even stronger margins in the second quarter, before higher expenses eat into profits in the second half of the year.
Consistent expansion in operating margin is key to Netflix’s plan to reach a $1 trillion valuation. Management thinks it can double its revenue between 2024 and 2030, but it expects operating income to grow threefold. That implies an operating margin of about 40% by 2030, an expansion of 11 percentage points from its 2025 target. Since Netflix has historically expanded its margin about 2 percentage points in a normal year, that target is reasonable.
Story Continues
Further supporting Netflix’s growth is its strong free cash flow. After years of borrowing funds to invest in original content, the company turned cash-flow positive again in 2022. Last year, the business generated $6.9 billion in free cash flow and management expects that to grow to $8 billion this year. The cash gives Netflix management more flexibility to invest in content or acquisitions for growth, or return capital to shareholders through share repurchases.
But the path ahead won’t be easy for Netflix. The company faces a big challenge going forward.
Netflix has made a big shift in its strategy over the last few years by introducing an ad-supported tier to its offerings. It’s seen a lot of early success with advertising, and it’s moved to bring its ad-tech in house to generate better-performing ad units and improve the economics of the ad business. Management thinks advertising revenue can double in 2025 and grow to a $9 billion business by 2030.
There are a couple challenges this shift creates. First of all, advertising revenue isn’t as predictable as subscription revenue. Ad sales are much more cyclical, so an economic slowdown will negatively impact the new business.
The second challenge is balancing the ad-supported tier with the ad-free tiers for subscribers. Netflix expects the ad-free tiers to remain the biggest source of revenue and growth for a long time. That growth will come partially from raising prices to maintain parity between revenue from subscribers with ads and those without ads.
However, Netflix isn’t the only streaming service in town anymore, and that puts a cap on how much it can charge consumers before they’ll look elsewhere for their entertainment. Even if Netflix continues to increase its content budget, the marginal value of another series viewers love on Netflix might not be worth a higher price for many of them.
To that end, Netflix may find the advertising tier an even more valuable piece of its business by 2030. Advertising can provide an additional boost in revenue for each extra minute Netflix viewers spend with the service, and that might not be true with the ad-free tiers. But that comes with the downside of less predictable revenue, making it more difficult for Netflix to hit its operating margin targets.
Still, Netflix’s goals seem reasonable, even if it won’t be as easy for management to grow like it has in the past. If management continues to focus on its core financial goals of double-digit revenue growth and incrementally expanding its operating margin each year, it will be only a matter of time until reaches a $1 trillion valuation.
Successfully tripling operating income means Netflix will also need a valuation of about 32 times its operating income in 2030. That’s well below its historic average, so it’s not out of the realm of possibility. That said, management should focus on the financial goals and let the market valuation figure itself out on its own.

The ultra-rich are moving gold to Singapore as global risks mount
The ultra-rich are moving gold to Singapore as global risks mount
“The idea of putting physical metal in a safe jurisdiction like Singapore with parties they can trust is becoming a big trend nowadays,” says Gregor Gregersen, founder of The Reserve.

The ultra-wealthy are increasingly moving their gold offshore as economic and geopolitical uncertainty roils markets — and Singapore is emerging as a favored destination.
Not far from the city-state’s airport sits a six-story facility covered in onyx and fortified by tight security. Tucked behind its steel doors are gold and silver bars amounting to about $1.5 billion.
Known as “The Reserve,” the storage facility features scores of private vaults and a towering storage chamber lined with thousands of safe deposit boxes reaching three stories high.
From the start of the year to April, the precious metals repository has received an 88% increase in orders to store gold and silver in the vault from the same ******* in 2024, said its founder, Gregor Gregersen. The Reserve, which also sells gold and silver bars, saw sales for precious metals bars skyrocket 200% year on year in that time, data provided by The Reserve showed.
Singapore is viewed as the ‘Geneva of the East’; it has a reputation as a safe jurisdiction with relative political and economic stability.
A growing sense of unease is driving the surge, according to industry watchers.
“A lot of very high net worth clients are looking at tariffs, looking at the world changing, looking at the potential of geopolitical instabilities,” Gregersen told CNBC.
“The idea of putting physical metal in a safe jurisdiction like Singapore with parties they can trust is becoming a big trend nowadays,” he said, adding that 90% of the new orders are coming from outside of Singapore.
Not far from Singapore’s airport sits a six-story facility called The Reserve. Tucked behind its steel doors are gold and silver bars amounting to about $1.5 billion.
The Reserve
The rise of gold has been meteoric in recent months, with bullion prices notching consecutive record highs. That was fueled in part by its safe haven appeal in the face of the volatility brought about by U.S.-China trade tensions and a mass U.S. asset sell-off in April.
Though gold prices recently cooled after investors’ risk appetites improved following a thaw in trade tensions between the two economic superpowers, some market watchers still believe they could climb to as high as $5,000 per ounce next year. Spot gold prices are currently trading at $3,346.32 per ounce, near historic levels.
Physical bars versus paper
The wealthy are also increasingly opting for physical gold bars instead of paper because they do not want as much price exposure, Gregersen said. While storing and owning physical gold isn’t completely free of price exposure, it limits exposure to certain risks that paper gold carries.
For example, counterparty risks are lower if one owns the asset directly. The Silicon Valley Bank crisis that unfolded in 2023 fueled investors’ preference for physically owning or securely allocating specific gold bars, instead of relying on paper claims or owning just a stake in a pooled reserve — which could be put at risk if a bank collapses, said Nicky Shiels, head of research and metals strategy at MKS Pamp, a precious metals refining and trading firm.

Gold prices in the past one year
The World Gold Council’s chief market strategist John Reade likewise noted that this is especially the case for those who are worried about the health of the global financial system.
“Some holders of physical precious metals are wary of storing gold within the banking system, even in allocated form, so they prefer to hold gold with entities that are not banks,” Reade said.
Lack of trust in some domestic banks is also a key driver, said Jeremy Savory, founder of Millionaire Migrant, a Dubai-based consultancy that provides citizenship-related services to high-net-worth individuals.
“If you’re in a country where you don’t trust the banking system, for example, Lebanon or Egypt or Algeria … they don’t want to put it in the bank,” said Savory, whose clients include high-net-worth individuals around the world who are trying to move physical gold to vaults in Switzerland, Singapore and Dubai.
That said, vaulted gold may be less attractive for short-term investors, given that the transaction costs for purchasing and moving physical gold is higher than that of paper gold, said World Gold Council’s Reade.
The Reserve’s storage facility features scores of private vaults capable of storing 25 to 60 tons of gold, which are stored in boxes and sealed.
The Reserve
But why store them in Singapore specifically?
“Singapore is viewed as the ‘Geneva of the East’; it has a reputation as a safe jurisdiction with relative political and economic stability,” Shiels said.
The Southeast Asian nation’s role as a key transit hub also makes it an attractive and convenient place for the wealthy to park their gold.
“Singapore is a transit hub. Anywhere that is a transit hub, usually makes sense that there’s a gold vault,” said Savory. “You can bank, you can store your gold there, but you can also pick it up [easily] because it’s a transit hub. And this is where Switzerland is losing out,” he added.
Although Dubai is also a popular transit hub with robust security, Savory noted that the process of storing gold in the city may require more paperwork.
“Dubai is probably a little bit more documentation-heavy. Some people don’t like documentation,” he said.

Almost 800 properties on Mid North Coast deemed uninhabitable by SES
Almost 800 properties on Mid North Coast deemed uninhabitable by SES
Almost 800 properties have been deemed uninhabitable on the NSW Mid North Coast as the SES begins recovery efforts in the region.
NSW SES spokesman Matt Heap said 794 properties – including residential, commercial and industrial buildings – had been declared uninhabitable after record-breaking floods inundated the region.

“NSW SES and interagency teams have conducted 5300 damage assessments,” Mr Heap said.
“Teams will continue working through those damage assessments, washouts and clean-out efforts over the coming days, and it is likely the number (of uninhabitable properties) will rise.”

It is estimated 10,000 flood-impacted properties will need to be assessed for safety.
“This has been an incredibly challenging event for many communities, and I want to sincerely thank our NSW SES volunteers and partner agencies for their unwavering dedication and commitment in responding to this crisis,” NSW SES Commissioner Mike Wassing said.

“As we transition into the recovery phase of this operation, our priority remains on delivering essential supplies to the thousands of residents who remain isolated.
“As the water recedes, we are only now starting to see the true scale of the devastation communities are dealing with. We are carrying out rapid assessments and working with communities to wash and clean out properties where it is safe to do so, but with 10,000 properties impacted, this will take time.

“Recovery is a long process, but communities have demonstrated remarkable resilience and resourcefulness, and I have no doubt they can rebuild together.”
The recovery effort is set to be hindered by damaging winds, with the Bureau of Meteorology warning that average gusts of 50 to 65km/h and peaks of about 90km/h are set to hit the Mid North Coast, Hunter, South Coast and Central Tablelands on Tuesday.

Authorities have also warned that residents should be aware of looters after two men were charged after allegedly stealing from destroyed homes.
Deputy Commissioner Peter Thurtell warned anyone looking to try their luck picking through property that there was an increased police presence in the area.
“We have additional police on the ground and if we find anyone taking advantage of this community, we’ll throw the book at them,” Mr Thurtell said.

“The impact of this weather event has been unimaginable and to think they now have to be concerned about hanging on to whatever property they have left is a disgrace.
“Stealing from people vulnerable during hard times like these is un-***********.”
The SES has advised residents taking part in the clean-up to be cautious of floodwaters containing dangerous debris and pollutants, such as garbage, chemicals, debris, sewage, germs such as bacteria, fungi and viruses.
Residents have been told to take photos of their properties before they begin cleaning for insurance claims.
They have also been told to wear protective clothing when touching or cleaning flood-damaged items and to leave waste on the kerbside, separating whitegoods and mattresses from other debris.
