  2. Ultranationalists chant ‘death to Arabs’ in Jerusalem Ultranationalists chant ‘death to Arabs’ in Jerusalem Chanting “Death to Arabs” and singing “May your village burn”, groups of young Israeli Jews have marched through ******* neighbourhoods in Jerusalem’s Old City during an annual event marking Israel’s conquest of the eastern part of the city. ************ shopkeepers closed early on Monday and police lined the alleys ahead of the march that often becomes a rowdy and sometimes violent procession of ultranationalist Jews. A police officer raised his arms in celebration at one point, hugging a marcher. It was blazing hot, with temperatures hitting 37C. Police kept a close watch as demonstrators jumped, danced and sang. Hours earlier, a small group of protesters, including an Israeli member of parliament, stormed a compound in east Jerusalem belonging to the UN agency for ************ refugees, known as UNRWA. The march commemorates Jerusalem Day, which marks Israel’s capture of east Jerusalem, including the Old City and its holy sites sacred to Jews, Christians and Muslims, in the 1967 ******** war. The event threatened to inflame tensions that are rife in the city after nearly 600 days of war in Gaza. Jerusalem lies at the heart of the conflict between Israelis and Palestinians. Each sees the city as a key part of their national and religious identity. It is one of the most intractable issues of the conflict and is often a flashpoint. Israel considers all of Jerusalem to be its eternal, undivided capital. Its annexation of east Jerusalem is not internationally recognised. Palestinians want an independent state with east Jerusalem as its capital. Last year’s procession, during the first year of the war in Gaza, saw ultranationalist Israelis attack a ************ journalist in the Old City and call for violence against Palestinians. Four years ago, the march helped set off an 11-day war in Gaza. Tour buses carrying young ultranationalist Jews lined up near entrances to the Old City, bringing hundreds from outside Jerusalem, including settlements in the Israeli-occupied West Bank. After the march ended, Arab shopkeepers darted outside to begin scrubbing their shops, now covered with stickers reading “Gaza is ours”. Police said they had detained a number of people and “acted swiftly to prevent violence, confrontations and provocations”. 6. Jim Cramer’s warning misses the mark by over 380% Jim Cramer’s warning misses the mark by over 380% In 2023, CNBC’s Mad Money host Jim Cramer gave a highly publicized warning regarding Bitcoin. On-air, he warned that he sees the cryptocurrency manipulated by Sam Bankman-Fried and told viewers, “I’d sell my Bitcoin right into this rally.” Bitcoin traded at about $22,500 then, and it has since climbed over 382% to $112,000 this month. At press time, Bitcoin is sitting at $109,085.25, up by 3.89% (24 h), as per Kraken. An early believer in Bitcoin, Cramer changed his tune and became bearish as regulatory scrutiny developed and scandals such as FTX shook investor confidence. “Cramer said, “I had been a believer once in Bitcoin, not here, not now. Bitcoin is a strange animal. I will say, point-blank. I think it’s being manipulated up.” Cramer’s commentary hints at a reasonably deep-seated mistrust in the crypto market’s transparency. However, in 2025, Bitcoin is making headlines not only for crossing its January high of $108,000 but also for reaching its all-time high at $112,000. From $1K to nearly $1B—this portfolio shows the power of long-term conviction in Bitcoin. Institutional adoption has grown. Investment firms like MicroStrategy are still stacking Bitcoin, which has become a distinct asset class with global acceptance. This is not the first time Cramer’s predictions have been off. Based on Reddit Analysis and CXO Advisory Research, Jim Cramer’s calls on stocks are often incorrect. Studies say he’s wrong 50% to 58% of the time, especially with sell recommendations. His buy calls can be the correct short-term move but frequently trail the market long-term. His misfires are everywhere, ranging from high-profile misses like Bear Stearns and Silicon Valley Bank. Soon after, netizens called the phenomenon the ‘Cramer Curse’ based on the trend of assets moving in the opposite direction from what Cramer said. Interestingly, President Trump criticized Cramer’s predictions during an interview on TheStreet when Cramer asked the President if Americans should buy into stocks. He first refused to answer and laughed off Cramer as historically incorrect. “I think you are the leading authority in going up and going down.” However, on May 20, he edged towards Bitcoin as a hedge against the rising U.S. debt. Gold Valley iron ore exporting from Bunbury port in first ever South West shipping expansion Gold Valley iron ore exporting from Bunbury port in first ever South West shipping expansion Gold Valley iron ore, a Perth-based company, have expanded their reach to Southern WA exporting from the Bunbury port for the first time. The decision to start exporting from Bunbury followed the company also beginning shipments from Esperance earlier this year. Gold Valley chair Yuzheng Xie said expanding shipments to the regions would be beneficial for the company. “We were confident working with Southern Ports to export the product for the long term, knowing it would be beneficial for Gold Valley and the port,” he said. “This iron concentrate supplements our iron ore that we export through the Port of Esperance to our global steel manufacturer with Gold Valley currently supplying over seven countries.” In two shipments in as many months, Gold Valley exported 93,000 tonnes of iron concentrate from Bunbury to China. The first shipment from Bunbury departed on March 9 after seven days of loading the concentrate onto Bao Yue Ling. The second shipment followed in April. Southern Ports chief executive officer Keith Wilks said he was pleased to have Gold Valley export from Bunbury port as well as Esperance. “We’re always actively seeking new and expanded trade opportunities with current and potential customers to help diversify our services and stimulate trade,” Mr Wilks said. “It’s fantastic to see that our partnership with Gold Valley has led to new opportunities to export through another one of our ports. “We believe that strong regional ports contribute to strong regions, and this is the perfect example of this vision in action.” Source link #Gold #Valley #iron #ore #exporting #Bunbury #port #South #West #shipping #expansion Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  9. Giant Megalodon’s Prey Finally Revealed, And It’s Not What We Thought Giant Megalodon’s Prey Finally Revealed, And It’s Not What We Thought Megalodon, the terror of the Neogene, dominated its giant shark niche for just 20 million years before it disappeared from the world’s oceans. And, during that time, it hunted anything and everything that crossed its path. It didn’t distinguish: if it was large enough to be a snack, megalodon (Odotus megalodon) partook. Scientists have reached that conclusion after studying the teeth of modern sharks, and comparing them to the fossilized teeth of megalodon, almost all we have left of the extinct fish today. This contradicts the theory that the main prey of megalodon was whales. Certainly megalodon could and did eat whales – but its diet as a whole was far more opportunistic. “Our study tends rather to draw a picture of megalodon as an ecologically versatile generalist,” says geoscientist Jeremy McCormack of Goethe University Frankfurt in Germany “Megalodon was by all means flexible enough to feed on marine mammals and large fish, from the top of the food pyramid as well as lower levels – depending on availability.” A megalodon tooth (left) compared to the tooth of a white shark (right). (Mark Kostich/iStock/Getty Images Plus) Megalodon is an extinct species of shark that lived from around 23 million to around 3.6 million years ago, during which time it occupied a prime position at the top of the food web, before being driven to extinction. We will never know for certain what it looked like; like all sharks, its skeleton was mostly cartilage, and all it left behind was a lot of teeth and a few vertebrae. We know from these remains, however, that megalodon was enormous, with size estimates ranging from around 11 meters to over 40 meters (36 to 131 feet) in length (although the latter is an outlier, and most estimates hover around 13 to 20 meters). That’s huge – so huge that scientists think that megalodon may have specialized in large prey. One way to determine the diet of someone who has been dead a long time is to look at isotopes in their teeth. An isotope of an element is an atom that deviates from the norm in the number of neutrons it has in its nucleus, and the ratios of these isotopes vary according to several factors, one of which is diet. This is because when we eat, some of the metals in our food replace some of the calcium in our teeth and bones – not so you notice, obviously, but enough to leave a tracer. McCormack and his colleagues looked specifically at the ratios of two isotopes of zinc – the lighter zinc-64 and the heavier zinc-66. When fish at the bottom of the food web eat, they store less zinc-66 than zinc-64. The fish that eat those fish have even less zinc-66. So when you get to the fish at the very top of the chain, you see the very least zinc-66 compared to zinc-64. This is what the researchers observed in the teeth of megalodon and its cousin, the extinct Odotus chubutensis. The researchers don’t really know what was at the bottom of the food chain 18 million years ago, the time from which the megalodon teeth they studied hailed. So, they compared the megalodon teeth with the teeth of sharks that swim the oceans today to work out what the giant predators ate. “Sea bream, which fed on mussels, snails, and crustaceans, formed the lowest level of the food chain we studied,” McCormack says. “Smaller shark species such as requiem sharks and ancestors of today’s cetaceans, dolphins, and whales, were next. Larger sharks such as sand tiger sharks were further up the food pyramid, and at the top were giant sharks like Araloselachus cuspidatus and the Otodus sharks, which include megalodon.” Megalodon’s status as a superpredator at the very top of the food web has been established previously. The new research reveals that the isotope difference between megalodon and the animals at the lowest level the researchers studied was not a sharp delineation, suggesting that the shark was not a fussy eater. There were also intriguing differences in megalodon diet depending on where the animals lived. Megalodon teeth found in Passau, Germany, dined more heavily on the lower levels of the food web, the researchers found. This is not dissimilar to the opportunistic hunting approach demonstrated by white sharks (Carcharias carcharodon), which stands to reason: previous work led by McCormack showed that the rise of the white shark was likely one of the drivers that led megalodon to extinction. With competition in its ecological niche, megalodon became more vulnerable. “It gives us important insights into how the marine communities have changed over geologic time,” says paleobiologist Kenshu Shimada of DePaul University in the US, “but more importantly the fact that even ‘supercarnivores’ are not immune to extinction.” The research has been published in Earth and Planetary Science Letters. 12. King prepares to give key speech backing Canada King prepares to give key speech backing Canada Sean Coughlan Royal correspondent PA Media King Charles met ********* PM Mark Carney soon after he arrived in Ottawa King Charles III will deliver a significant speech in Canada’s parliament later on Tuesday that is expected to offer his support in the country’s dispute with US President Donald Trump. The King and Queen Camilla received a warm welcome when they arrived in Ottawa, on the royal couple’s first trip to Canada since the start of their reign. Soon after arriving, the King, who is Canada’s head of state, held a meeting with Prime Minister Mark Carney, recently elected on a wave of anti-Trump public opinion. Carney has praised the “historic ties” that make up Canada’s independent identity, including the “vitality of our constitutional monarchy”, which he said “crises only fortify”. Watch: The King plants trees and meets locals on first day of Canada visit Carney invited the King to deliver the speech at the opening of parliament after his recent general election victory, in a campaign dominated by the threats to Canada’s sovereignty from Trump. It will be the first time in almost 50 years that a monarch gives the “Speech from the throne”, with the King’s decision to come to parliament in Ottawa seen as a symbolic show of support for Canada. The King’s speech will be written on the advice of the ********* government, with the expectation that it will send a clear, if diplomatic, message that the country is “not for *****” to the US. Carney said in advance that the speech, to be delivered in French and English, would match “the weight of our times”. On Monday afternoon, the King and Carney held a meeting at Rideau Hall, the residence of Canada’s governor-general, with both men sitting in front of ********* flags. There were also meetings with leaders of Canada’s indigenous and First Nations groups, including Cindy Woodhouse, the national chief of the Assembly of First Nations. Looking relaxed in the Ottawa sunshine, the King took part in a tree-planting ceremony, receiving an enthusiastic reception from onlookers, who cheered and crowded round to shake hands with him. “Canada feels threatened and scared. It is very important he is here,” said Theresa McKnight, from Mississauga, Ontario. Her sister Dianne St Louis from near Toronto agreed: “It’s critical. It means a great deal to have the King standing side by side with Canadians.” There had been a warm welcome at Ottawa airport, for what will be a visit of about 24 hours on the ground in Canada. Carney was on the runway to meet the royal visitors, with a welcoming party that included schoolchildren from English- and French-speaking schools and representatives of First Nations communities. A community event had also been a checklist of ********* moments, such as the King dropping a puck to start a game of street hockey and getting jars of maple syrup. But the main focus of this trip will be the historic speech on Tuesday, with the prospect of the King delivering the ********* government’s message of rejecting calls to become the US 51st state. It is also a diplomatic balancing act because in his role as head of state of the ***, the King has been part of an effort to keep good relations with Trump, including inviting him for a second state visit. But in Canada, the King will have to speak on behalf of Canada. As another bystander said at Rideau Hall: “Sovereignty is important and he is the epitome of that.” Source link #King #prepares #give #key #speech #backing #Canada Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content] For verified travel tips and real support, visit: [Hidden Content]

  14. Donald Trump grows angrier as Vladimir Putin exposes his impotence Donald Trump grows angrier as Vladimir Putin exposes his impotence As Washington settled in for a typically sleepy Memorial Day following the passage of Donald Trump’s “big, beautiful bill” in the House, the president fired off one of his trademark furious rants on Truth Social, but the target was a surprise. This time, the target wasn’t any of his domestic political foes — like the Democrats who voted in lockstep against the budget package he endorsed, or the handful of Republicans who refused to fall into line. It wasn’t even aimed at the various law enforcement figures who have attempted to hold him to account over the years. Sunday evening’s rant was aimed squarely at Russian President Vladimir Putin. Despite what he called a “very good relationship” with Putin, Trump in his latest statement on the Ukraine-Russia war blasted the Russian leader as “absolutely crazy.” “He is needlessly killing a lot of people, and I’m not just talking about soldiers. Missiles and drones are being shot into Cities in Ukraine, for no reason whatsoever,” Trump posted on Truth Social. “I’ve always said that he wants ALL of Ukraine, not just a piece of it, and maybe that’s proving to be right, but if he does, it will lead to the downfall of Russia!” Trump warned. He echoed the same thoughts as he spoke to reporters in New Jersey on Sunday ahead of his return to Washington that day. “He’s killing a lot of people,” said the president. “I don’t know what the hell happened to Putin, I’ve known him for a long time.” Donald Trump speaks to reporters on Sunday about the war in Ukraine (AFP via Getty Images) Trump sudden harsh turn was illuminative, if not for the reason he may have intended. A throwaway jab aimed at Ukraine’s Volodymyr Zelensky (“everything out of his mouth causes problems … it better stop”) in the same post solidified the underlying intention of the screed: Trump was massaging a bruised ego. With his pride wounded, Trump has turned to lashing out at the Russian leader who is now publicly refuting his repeated claim that he could end the destructive three-year-old conflict in “24 hours.” Four months after Trump took office, supposedly poised to immediately shut down the war, attacks on Ukrainian targets intensified over the weekend, with Russia launching its largest aerial assault of the war thus far. Loathe as he is to give Zelensky any credit for correctly predicting that Russia’s leadership had no real intentions of ending the war, Trump’s emotional outburst comes as he seems to be realizing that the issue could become a major blemish on the “dealmaker” perception he has sought to cultivate. More importantly than representing a threat to his ability to live up to his own boasting, the attacks also refute many of Trump’s more recent statements about the Russian president and his supposed desire to see the war end. Trump, who famously hates being made to look foolish by his allies, said as recently as last Monday of Putin: “I do believe he wants to end it.” But France’s president Emmanuel Macron believes Trump is beginning to realize the truth about Putin’s war stance. “I believe that President Trump has realized that when President Putin told him he was ready for peace, he was lying,” Macron said on Monday. He pointed to the severity of Russian offensives as the persuading factor. “You cannot claim to be ready for negotiations and carry out attacks at the same time. Such double rhetoric demonstrates the insincerity of any statements about dialogue,” said the French president. Volodymyr Zelensky, flanked by Keir Starmer and Emanuelle Macron (AFP/Getty) Now, Washington is already beginning to wonder if Trump will back up his rhetoric with action. He has repeatedly vowed to slap damaging sanctions on Russia if the invasion continues without a resolution, most recently doing so this month in an interview with Fox’s Bret Baier. But in a press gaggle days after those remarks, Trump also suggested that his administration may “just back away” from the conflict, which would “keep going” without U.S. involvement if a deal was not reached. Capitol Hill is not keen to let that happen — a bipartisan resolution to impose a new slate of sanctions on Russia hit 81 co-sponsors in the Senate last Wednesday, according to a press release from joint co-sponsors Lindsey Graham and Richard Blumenthal. The bill, which is designed to be snapped into place if peace talks fall apart, would slap sanctions on a range of Russian top ministers, as well as on businesses and entities that transact with the Russian armed forces. “Russia has agreed to provide its term sheet for a ceasefire in the next few days. Its contents will speak volumes as to whether or not Russia is serious about peace. We suspect it will be more of the same,” the pair said in a joint statement. “If it is more of the same, Russia can expect decisive action from the United States Senate.” Source link #Donald #Trump #grows #angrier #Vladimir #Putin #exposes #impotence Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content] For verified travel tips and real support, visit: [Hidden Content]

On-duty navigator was allegedly asleep when cargo ship ran aground in Norway and nearly hit a house On-duty navigator was allegedly asleep when cargo ship ran aground in Norway and nearly hit a house OSLO, Norway (AP) — Norwegian prosecutors have charged a cargo ship’s on-duty navigator after he allegedly fell asleep on duty and the vessel ran aground, narrowly missing crashing into a home. The ship, the NCL Salten, ran aground shortly before 6 a.m. Thursday. No oil spills were reported, and none of the 16 people aboard was injured. Johan Helberg told Norwegian broadcaster NRK that he’d slept through the whole thing and only woke up when a neighbor started ringing his doorbell. Images show the ship’s red and green bow just meters (yards) from Helberg’s house along the Trondheim Fjord’s coast. The on-duty navigator was the ship’s second officer, prosecutor Kjetil Bruland Sørensen said in a statement. He was charged with negligent navigation; his name was not made public. Crews on Monday continued to take containers off the ship so it could be more easily removed from the area. NCL, the shipping company, said it was cooperating with investigators. 19. Streeting urges doctors to vote no in strike ballot Streeting urges doctors to vote no in strike ballot Health Secretary Wes Streeting has urged doctors in England to “vote no” in a ballot on industrial action which gets under way on Tuesday. In a BBC interview, he urged resident doctors, the new name for junior doctors, to “work with the government” and warned strikes risked hampering the progress being made in the NHS. He said it was in no-one’s interests for strikes to take place. Last week it was announced resident doctors would be getting a 5.4% average pay rise this year – more than other doctors, nurses and teachers. But resident doctors, who took part in 11 strikes in 2023 and 2024, said it was not enough to make up for below-inflation pay awards since 2008. The union is urging members to vote for industrial action, with sources saying strikes would be the likely action taken. This year’s pay rise comes after resident doctors were awarded rises worth 22% over the previous two years. Streeting agreed to that deal shortly after coming into office, ending a dispute which had lasted more than a year. Taking account of this year’s pay rise, it means the starting salary for a doctor fresh out of university has risen by £9,500 over the past three years to around £38,800, the government said. But the British Medical Association (BMA) said even after the latest pay rise another 20% was needed to bring wages back to where they were in 2008. Resident doctors’ committee co-chairs Dr Melissa Ryan and Dr Ross Nieuwoudt said: “We are urging doctors to vote yes to strike action. “By voting yes they will be telling the government there is no alternative to fixing pay – this cannot wait for different fiscal circumstances and a healthier NHS. The answer is to fix it today.” The vote on industrial action runs until 7 July. Streeting said his door was always open but added there was no more money to increase salaries above the latest award. And he said a fresh bout of strikes would put attempts to rebuild the NHS at risk. Speaking to the BBC, Streeting said: ” I don’t think strikes are in their interests, in patients interests and I certainly don’t think it’s in the interest of the NHS overall.” Streeting has often cited the deal he reached last year to end the previous round of strikes as evidence of the government’s ability to reform the health service and cut waiting lists. Meanwhile, BMA sources said consultants were likely to start a dispute process over their 4% rise – the first step towards moving to an industrial action ballot. Other staff including nurses, midwives and physios have been given a 3.6% increase. The Royal College of Nursing said it was “grotesque” nurses were getting less than doctors for the second year in a row. The Scottish government has agreed a deal worth 8% over two years with health unions representing all staff apart from doctors and dentists. There have been no strikes by health workers in Scotland. 23. Royal Caribbean warns cruisers about deadly disease Royal Caribbean warns cruisers about deadly disease These days, most people understand the general risk of illness that comes with bringing a large number of people together into a semi-enclosed space like a cruise ship. Many people don’t realize though that cruise ship hot tub use can potentially increase their risk of becoming ill from a disease that isn’t spread through person-to-person contact. Related: CDC says throw this food out after salmonella sickens cruisers Over the last couple of years, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has been working to educate cruise lines about the increased risk for Legionella bacteria growth in private-balcony hot tubs. When Legionella bacteria grows in hot tub water systems, it can be transmitted to hot tub users through inhaled water droplets. In some cases, cruise passengers exposed to the bacteria later become sick with Legionnaires’ disease, a severe type of pneumonia. Although rare, Legionnaires’ disease is a growing health concern for cruise passengers because private-balcony hot tubs have become a popular amenity on many newer cruise ships. Since private-balcony hot tubs aren’t used as often as public ones, their maintenance requirements typically aren’t as strict, which can create conditions favorable for Legionella bacteria growth. Royal Caribbean continues to warn passengers about Legionnaires’ disease Over the last few months, Royal Caribbean has been notifying passengers on multiple cruises about a recent case of Legionnaires’ disease, according to RoyalCaribbeanBlog.com, an unofficial fan blog not affiliated with the cruise line. “The CDC has advised that while they are unsure where exposed, a guest who recently sailed on Symphony of the Seas was later diagnosed with Legionella,” Royal Caribbean informed passengers. Royal Caribbean sent a similar notification to Symphony of the Seas’ passengers in January after two other passengers fell ill with the disease after sailing on the ship in late 2024. Related: Here’s when Royal Caribbean can cancel your cruise vacation Symphony of the Seas is not the only cruise ship to be associated with the disease, however. In October 2024, the CDC reported that it was notified of 12 cases of Legionnaires’ disease among travelers sailing on two cruise ships from separate cruise lines between November 2022 and June 2024. Their investigation linked both cruise ship Legionnaires’ disease outbreaks to private-balcony hot tubs. Be the first to see the best deals on cruises, special sailings, and more. Sign up for the Come Cruise With Me newsletter. What cruisers should know about Legionnaires’ disease and hot tubs It’s important for cruisers to know that private-balcony hot tubs are more likely to experience Legionella growth than public hot tubs found in common areas because they are not required to be disinfected as frequently as public ones. The CDC has been working to ensure that cruise lines understand the hot tub features that increase the risk for Legionella growth and transmission, and how cruise lines can adapt maintenance and operations protocols to reduce that risk. “Royal Caribbean is working hard to protect the health of guests and crew onboard Symphony of the Seas,” the cruise line assured passengers in its recent Legionnaires’ disease notification emails. The cruise line informed passengers that it stepped up its sanitation efforts as a precautionary measure and followed all CDC guidance. Related: Princess Cruises ship gets banned from entering Caribbean port Although most healthy people who are exposed to Legionella do not get sick, some people are at an increased risk including current and former smokers, adults over 50, and people with specific health issues or conditions. Legionnaires’ disease symptoms include cough, shortness of breath, fever, muscle aches, and headaches. “If you experience these symptoms and have concerns, please reach out to your preferred medical professional,” the cruise line urged.
