  4. IVF clinics destroyed, crushing hopes of motherhood IVF clinics destroyed, crushing hopes of motherhood Ethar Shalaby BBC News Arabic Noura’s family archive Noura and Mohamed at their home in Gaza City before the war began, where they hoped to raise a family “My nerves are shattered,” says Noura, a 26-year-old ************ woman, explaining that she has been “left with nothing”. After years of IVF treatment, she became pregnant in July 2023. “I was overjoyed,” she remembers, describing the moment she saw the positive pregnancy test. She and her husband Mohamed decided to store two more embryos at Al-Basma Fertility Centre in Gaza City, which had helped them conceive, in the hope of having more children in the future. “I thought my dream had finally come true,” she says. “But the day the Israelis came in, something in me said it was all over.” Israel launched a military campaign in Gaza in response to ******’s cross-border attack on 7 October 2023, in which about 1,200 people were killed and 251 others were taken hostage. Since then at least 54,000 people have been killed in Gaza, according to the territory’s health ministry. Like thousands of Gazans, Noura and Mohamed had to repeatedly flee, and were unable to get the food, vitamins and medication she needed for a healthy pregnancy. Noura Noura kept a photo of her positive pregnancy test “We used to walk for long hours and move constantly from one place to another, amid terrifying random bombings,” says Mohamed. Seven months into her pregnancy, Noura suffered a severe haemorrhage. “She was bleeding heavily, and we couldn’t even find a vehicle to take her to the hospital. We finally managed to transport her in a garbage truck,” Mohamed explains. “When we arrived, the miscarriage had already started.” One of their twins was stillborn and the other died a few hours after birth. Mohamed says there were no incubators for premature babies available. “Everything was gone in a minute,” says Noura. As well as losing the twins, they have also lost their frozen embryos. Thousands of embryos destroyed The director of Al-Basma Fertility Centre, Dr Baha Ghalayini, speaks with sorrow and disbelief as he explains that it was shelled in early December 2023. He is unable to provide an exact date or time and bases this estimate on the last time a member of staff saw the fertility centre operational. Dr Ghalayini says the most important part of the clinic housed two tanks that held nearly 4,000 frozen embryos and more than 1,000 samples of ****** and eggs. Andalou via Getty Images The laboratory where eggs were fertilised at Al-Basma clinic was destroyed “The two destroyed incubators – which cost over $10,000 – were filled with liquid nitrogen that preserved the samples,” he says. They needed to be topped up regularly and “about two weeks before the shelling, the nitrogen began to run low and evaporate”. The laboratory director, Dr Mohamed Ajjour, who had been displaced to southern Gaza, says he “made it to the nitrogen warehouse in Al-Nuseirat, and got two tanks”. But he says the intensity of the shelling prevented him from delivering them to the clinic, about 12km away: “The centre was shelled and the nitrogen became useless.” Dr Ghalayini says the centre stored embryos for patients being treated at other clinics as well as their own. “I’m talking about 4,000 frozen embryos. These are not just numbers, they’re people’s dreams. People who waited years, went through painful treatments, and pinned their hopes on these tanks that were ultimately destroyed.” He estimates that between 100 and 150 women lost what may have been their only chance at having children, as many cannot undergo the procedure again. “Some are getting older, some are ******* patients, others suffer chronic illnesses. Many received strong fertility medications that they can receive just once. Starting again is not easy.” Andalou via Getty Images The patients who came to Al-Basma clinic have all lost the embryos that were stored there When approached for comment, the Israel Defense Forces told the BBC they would be better able to respond if the “specific time of the strike” was provided. They added that they “operate according to international law and take precautions to minimize civilian harm”. In March this year, the UN’s Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied ************ Territory made the accusation that Israel “intentionally attacked and destroyed the Basma IVF clinic” in a measure “intended to prevent births among Palestinians in Gaza”. It also alleged that Israel prevented aid, including medicines necessary to ensure safe pregnancy, childbirth, and neonatal care from reaching women. The commission went on to claim that Israeli authorities “destroyed in part the reproductive capacity of the Palestinians in Gaza as a group… one of the categories of genocidal acts”. At the time of the report, Israel’s permanent mission to the UN issued a statement saying it “categorically rejects these baseless accusations”. And Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu responded angrily, calling the Human Rights Council – which commissioned the report – “an antisemitic, rotten, terrorist-supporting and irrelevant body”. Instead of focusing on war crimes committed by ******, he said, it was attacking Israel with “false accusations”. A spokesperson for the IDF told BBC Arabic it “does not deliberately target fertility clinics, nor does it seek to prevent the birthrate of Gaza’s civilian population. “The claim that the IDF intentionally strikes such sites is baseless and demonstrates a complete misunderstanding of the purpose of IDF operations in Gaza.” ‘I watched everything collapse’Islam Islam lost her baby and frozen embryos after the war began Dr Ghalayini says all of Gaza’s nine fertility clinics have either been destroyed or are no longer able to operate. Noura explains that leaves her and many others with little chance of ever having a child. People like Sara Khudari, who began her fertility treatment in 2020. She was preparing for an embryo to be implanted when the war began in October 2023. The procedure never happened. “I watched everything collapse,” she says. And Islam Lubbad, who Al-Basma clinic helped to conceive in 2023, a few months before the war broke out. But a month after the fighting started, she lost her baby, like Noura. “There was no stability. We kept relocating. My body was exhausted,” she says, recalling how she miscarried. Islam did have more frozen embryos stored at Al-Basma Fertility Centre, but they have now been lost and there are no IVF clinics operating left for her to try to get pregnant again. 9. ‘We found a meteorite!’: Joy as rare space rocks discovered in WA outback ‘We found a meteorite!’: Joy as rare space rocks discovered in WA outback A team of scientists has uncovered two rare meteorite fragments on remote salt flats in outback Western Australia, days after a fireball lit up the skies above Perth and surrounding regions on Mother’s Day. Researchers from Curtin University, part of the Desert Fireball Network, traced the meteorite’s dramatic descent to Lake Hope, a barren expanse roughly seven hours east of Perth, using hi-tech weather modelling and an extensive network of sky-monitoring cameras. Planetary scientist Hadrien Devillepoix told 9News the team used the advanced weather modelling to predict how the meteorite would drift in the wind once it had slowed down enough. Camera IconExperts have scoured hundreds of kilometres of salt flats deep in the West *********** outback to find pieces of meteorite that lit up the night sky over Perth and other parts of the state. 9News Credit: Channel 9Camera IconA fragment of the four-billion-year-old meteorite. 9 News Credit: Channel 9 They then drove for hours through rugged terrain and dense bush before trekking on foot more than seven kilometres across the lake’s salt flats. As the team trekked across the salt flats, 9News footage captured the moment team member Mia Walker raised her arms in triumph and shouted, “We found a meteorite!” “I started running and it was so special, I saw this hole in the lake and it only took, you know, just a little tug to pull it out,” Ms Walker said. “It’s very special, it’s very exciting to get to find one of these.” Camera IconTeam member Mia Walker was overjoyed by the discovery, describing it as ‘very special’. 9News Credit: Channel 9 Shortly after their initial discovery, the team struck gold again, uncovering a second fragment not far from the first. Among the finds was a significant chunk of space rock, one of the largest the team has recovered to date. “Here’s a piece of space rock that’s been travelling the solar system for four and a half billion years,” Dr Devillepoix said. “And now it’s in our hands and we can use it for science, that’s so exciting.” Camera IconPlanetary scientist Hadrien Devillepoix told 9News the team used advanced weather modelling to find the meteorite. 9News Credit: Channel 9 He said rain was forecast and the salt flats could be submerged “in a matter of days.” “That could have been lost forever,” he said. The meteorite fragments will now undergo detailed analysis in a laboratory to determine their composition and pinpoint their origin in the solar system. 12. Glastonbury farmer ‘makes more money from weddings than farming’ Glastonbury farmer ‘makes more money from weddings than farming’ Dave Harvey Business and Environment Correspondent, BBC West River Lane Photography Godney Farm in Somerset has its own church and hosts dozens of weddings every year Farmers have faced a difficult year, with the longest wet winter since records began followed by the driest spring on record. Meanwhile, the Labour government’s decision to start levying inheritance taxes on farms has sparked protests across the country and further outrage has followed with ministers’ sudden closure of the popular grants for sustainable farming practices. Three quarters of farmers now rely on non-farming enterprises to supplement their food production. From falconry and helicopter rides to spas and solar farms, farmers say these additional services now form a crucial part of the business. I spoke to some about what they are doing to keep their family businesses afloat. ‘Atrocious income’ Mike Churches, a sixth-generation farmer near Glastonbury, Somerset, said the “atrocious” income from farming had prompted him to diversify. He now makes substantially more money from weddings and events than from raising sheep and cattle. He said: “It’s about 30% from farming now, 70% from weddings, falconry, helicopter rides, glamping, you name it.” Tom Collins, Wiltshire chairman of the National Farmers’ Union (NFU), said these extra enterprises were essential. “It’s no longer just a bolt-on, it’s a crucial part of the business,” he said. The farm near Glastonbury has raised sheep for decades, but buying the church has brought financial security Many farms have started offering weddings, but few can boast their own on-site church. A few miles down the road from Glastonbury, the small village of Godney had a church, built next to Godney Farm. As the population of the village fell, it was deconsecrated, so Mr Churches and his wife Jenny decided to buy the building. “Yes, plenty of people tell us we have the right name,” chuckled Mr Churches. They spent a lot of money restoring the old building, and applied for a licence to hold civil ceremonies. Meanwhile, like many farmers, they watched their income from the farm’s sheep, cattle and haymaking steadily fall. Mr Churches told me his return on investment from farming is “about 2 or 3%, which is nonsensical for the hours that you’re doing”. He said he could get 10 times as much from weddings, “so it is a far more lucrative business to be in”. River Lane Photography Paul and Michelle Chorley “loved the outdoorsy feel” of a farm wedding Last year, 34 couples tied the knot at Godney Farm, including Paul and Michelle Chorley, from Street in Somerset. Mr Chorley explained the appeal: “We’re quite outdoorsy people, so we wanted something that would give us that country feel. “When we turned up and you see the view out the front, that is exactly what we’d imagined.” Mrs Chorley added: “It was really relaxed, the children were running about, the dogs were running about, the sheep and the cows were around, it was just what we wanted.” Michelle Stead runs a beauty salon from a traditionally mucky Wiltshire farm The Churches are obviously unusual in having their own actual church, but earning more from non-farming business is not that rare. Research for the *** government found a quarter of farms, 26%, earned more than half their income from diversified enterprises. In the heart of north Wiltshire, I bump down another farm track, past a pond and a field of a dozen young brown calves. In the yard there are tractors and hay bales, dogs running around. An unusual setting, you might think, for an immaculate beauty salon. But Michelle Stead thinks it sets the “perfect tone for any aesthetic beauty or wellbeing treatment”. Beauty and the beasts Mrs Stead set up her beauty clinic, called Perfection, more than 10 years ago. Vigorous social media marketing brings clients from Malmesbury, Cirencester and the villages around. “You can’t help fall in love with the location,” she smiles. I asked if being utterly off any beaten tracks has been a problem. “Why wouldn’t you come here?” she replied. “There’s no parking issues, no traffic jams, no pollution, it’s beautiful. “It literally sets the scene – and that’s what makes us different.” “Without diversification we would all be struggling”, said Wiltshire farmer Tom Collins Her landlord is Tom Collins or ‘Farmer Tom’ as she calls him. He runs a traditional mixed farm, with cattle and pigs, alongside fields growing wheat, barley, peas and beans. But his old Cotswold farm buildings are now too small for modern farming, and he has let them out to Mrs Stead and several other small firms. “Without diversification we’d really be struggling. I don’t know a single farm business that isn’t diversified,” he said. Tom Collins and Michelle Stead, who runs her salon on his farm Nearly three quarters of farmers (71%) now rely on some additional business, according to the government research, and this has risen from 61% since 2015. So what do most farmers turn to? The report for the Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) analysed farm incomes. Letting out buildings was the most common, followed by farm shops and B&Bs, camping and glamping sites. Spas, wellness clinics, sports and health retreats also feature. A new, more controversial, source of income is letting out fields to solar power companies. The report laid bare how much farmers rely on these new income streams. More than one in four, 28%, reported income from actual farming was negative. In other words, they lost money growing food. While Mr Collins salutes the enterprise farmers have shown, he says it is only happening because producing food is such an unreliable business. He said: “The finances aren’t good, the margins are wafer thin. It’s a lot of sawing for not much sawdust, as my grandfather used to say.” Ministers insist their support for farmers is “steadfast”. A spokesperson for DEFRA said: “This government is investing £5bn into farming, the largest budget for sustainable food production in our country’s history.” Source link #Glastonbury #farmer #money #weddings #farming Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

Nintendo Today app blocks screen recording now Nintendo Today app blocks screen recording now For some time, people have been screen recording and sharing screenshots of Nintendo Today news, but it seems Nintendo is sick of people circumventing the app, so much so it’s adding some sort of blockade from recording and screenshots. Users on Reddit spotted that on some models of phones, mostly newer ones, attempts at screenshoting or recording the screen will result in a ****** screen, similar to how many streaming services deal with attempted recording. This is likely because Nintendo wants the app to stand as the main source of info rather than the person who screenshot it, and to us, this seems like it’s admitting the app isn’t as successful as it wants. Nintendo Today is a leading platform for Nintendo sharing news surrounding the fastly approaching release of the Nintendo Switch 2 and its features, like GameChat’s text-to-speech feature. 15. StarVaders Review (PC) | Smash Jump StarVaders Review (PC) | Smash Jump Turn based games aren’t for everybody. Most players prefer having a lot of freedom with their games instead of having to plan their attacks tactically and wait their turn. However, turn based games have been quite popular in the mainstream thanks to games such as the two South Park titles and most recently Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. Pengonauts are the latest developers to add to the turn based genre with their newest game: StarVaders. A roguelite turn based combat game where you use cards to fend off the invaders and stop them from taking over the world. It’s a fast paced game which requires some level of patience to truly master, however, when you finally get into a groove with the game StarVaders becomes insanely addictive in all the right ways. Gameplay Starvaders has the standard hallmarks of any card building game. Players will collect different cards each with their own passive and offensive abilities that can help you turn the tide in battle. You start out each turn with a selection of cards to use in the fight and have to strategically use the right cards in order to beat all invaders. It sounds relatively easy, however, there are a few things that you have to keep track of throughout your turn. The first is that each time a card is placed you use something called Heat. You get a limited amount of Heat per turn and going past this amount will mean the card you play will be unusable for the rest of the level. In addition to that you can also obtain blank junk cards if you get caught in the crossfire of an enemy’s — or even your own — attack. Finally, there is Doom. When an enemy gets to the last 3 rows of the grid they build up Doom and must be eliminated within your next go. If you obtain 5 Doom at any point during your run it’s an instant game over. There is a lot to watch out for when playing StarVaders and one wrong move can set you back all the way to the beginning if you’re not careful. This is where it can get a bit messy. With so many things to be on the lookout for or memorize, it can be difficult keeping track of everything that is going on whilst playing. Luckily, the game is lenient and doesn’t have a nail-biting timer counting down the seconds until your turn is up and you’re allowed to take as long as you need. In addition to that, there is also a button to swap out cards for a better selection. Albeit this isn’t unlimited and you only have three goes, however, it is still a nice addition for the developers to include if a player finds themselves struggling. Fans of roguelite elements will be happy to see that StarVaders also includes elements from that genre to raise the stakes. If players build up too much of the aforementioned Doom it will be an instant game over and they will have to restart all the way from the beginning with brand new card decks. Whilst it can be very defeating having to essentially restart from scratch, the game encourages replayability at every turn. Your run may have been lost due to a poor error in judgement or miscalculation with the cards, so with the next run you take that mistake and run with it to make sure it doesn’t happen again. I adopted this method during my playthrough and I found that after each run I was getting better and better, and when I finally completed a run I felt immensely satisfied. StarVaders has a lot of mechanics to learn which lends well to the game’s replayability, and players will find themselves diving into game after game in order to continue to improve their abilities. Story StarVaders is not a story-driven game, but that doesn’t mean it lacks some narrative. In StarVaders, players will take on the role of a mech pilot who uses said mech to repel invaders from taking over the planet. You start out with the young and brash Roxy, but as you progress through the game you unlock more characters with their own backstory, mech, and difficulty levels to master. Each character has their own past which is explored after failing a run. Players will be shown various text boxes which tell events before the invasion, adding more depth to the characters. For example, with Roxy we see more about what drives her to fight, the loss of those closest to her fueling her desire to push the invaders back from where they came. It may not be much, and isn’t really needed for a game like this, but it is nice to have and adds more onto the world. The story is also helped by the art design and soundtrack. Taking inspiration from anime with a comic book twinge to it, the art and its colors pop on the screen with every chance it gets. Everything from the multitude of enemies and their varied designs to the settings you’ll encounter make StarVaders stand out. Not to mention the soundtrack, which provides some incredibly funky beats as you blast the enemies away, is absolutely top notch. Rock ballads and synth waves blaring through your speakers gets you pumped and adds onto StarVaders’ already colourful world. Summary StarVaders is a very addictive game that offers a lot of replay value. Its gameplay loop of defeating enemies with smart tactical manoeuvres, collecting cards to build a powerful deck, and repeating the process is a ton of fun. It’s not going to be for everybody and it can feel overwhelming at times with the stats, but after a while it’s a very easy game to pick up and play. There’s enough here to keep you coming back for the one-hundredth time to push back the invaders and it deserves to be recognised for providing players with an unlimited amount of fun. Fire up your mech, get your blasters ready, and prepare to fight off the invaders! StarVaders is out now on PC via Steam. 16. Judge halts deportation of Maine resident who filed complaint over wrongful detention Judge halts deportation of Maine resident who filed complaint over wrongful detention May 27—A federal judge has halted the deportation of a Maine man who says he had been held illegally by immigration officials at the Cumberland County Jail for eight months. Eyidi Ambila, 44, who is originally from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, was moved Tuesday to a jail in Burlington, Massachusetts, the American Civil Liberties Union of Maine said. U.S. District Judge John Woodcock issued an emergency ruling on Tuesday that prevents the federal government from sending Ambila out of the country. Shortly before he issued that decision, the Department of Justice said Ambila was “confirmed on a flight to the Democratic Republic of Congo for removal in the immediate future” and that he “could be boarding an airplane and departing for the DRC as soon as this afternoon,” according to Woodcock’s order. Ambila was moved out of the Portland facility three days after the ACLU filed a habeas corpus petition on his behalf, arguing that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement had held him illegally for eight months without providing any information about what they planned to do with him. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Maine, which is representing the DOJ and ICE, asked Woodcock to dismiss the petition. They argued that Woodcock couldn’t consider the case because Ambila is no longer in the state and his deportation was “imminent,” according to the judge’s order. ACLU attorney Anahita Sotoohi said that “raised a few alarms.” The federal government has not been able to secure travel papers for Ambila since 2007, when it tried deporting him after a felony conviction, the ACLU has said. Sotoohi added that she’s not aware of any cases where someone has been deported without those documents. “What the government has still failed to do is provide any information on a plan for Mr. Ambila,” she said, adding that she felt Woodcock’s order was “exactly what we’ve asked for and what we think is right.” The U.S. Attorney’s Office for Maine didn’t respond to questions about Woodcock’s ruling and the decision to move Ambila to a different facility. Their written court filings were not publicly available Tuesday, but were referenced in Woodcock’s order. View this document on Scribd Ambila had just finished serving a sentence at the jail in September after pleading guilty to two misdemeanor charges when he was immediately transferred to ICE custody, according to the petition. He moved to the United States in 1989 when he was 7 years old, the petition states, when his family was granted asylum based on political persecution in the Democratic Republic of Congo. He has three children, according to the ACLU, and is the primary provider for two. The Department of Homeland Security has been unable to deport Ambila for 18 years, the petition states, because the DRC has no record of him. In his order Tuesday afternoon, Woodcock said there was still no indication the Democratic Republic of Congo would even accept Ambila and ordered the federal government to halt deportation proceedings. He cited a 2001 appeals court decision that said if someone who is in custody longer than six months can prove they likely won’t be deported, the government must respond with “evidence sufficient to rebut that.” “Here, the Petitioner has provided ample support for his belief that there is no significant likelihood of removal in the reasonably foreseeable future based on his and DHS’s failed attempts to obtain a Congolese passport and travel documents necessary for his removal over the eighteen-year history of Mr. Ambila’s removal proceeding,” Woodcock wrote. Based on that lack of evidence, the judge said Ambila would likely succeed on his claim. This is not Woodcock’s final ruling on the matter. The federal authorities can still file a response with the court, outlining why he’s still in ICE custody, for the judge to weigh before a permanent order is issued. Sotoohi said the temporary ruling allows Ambila to maintain contact with his lawyers and it keeps an important legal case alive. She said it’s common for the federal government to move ICE detainees after a habeas corpus petition has been filed, which sometimes makes it harder for them to challenge their circumstances in court. A similar move happened in the case of Mahmoud Khalil, a Columbia graduate and ************ activist whom ICE detained in March. A habeas corpus petition was filed on his behalf in New Jersey, where he was held first, before ICE transferred him to a facility in Louisiana. 18. Skomer Island puffin numbers hit record high despite global fall Skomer Island puffin numbers hit record high despite global fall Elen Davies BBC News Reporting fromSkomer IslandAmy Compton Conservationists have counted 43,626 puffins on Skomer Island this year – a new record A record number of puffins have been recorded on a small island off the Pembrokeshire coast, despite global populations declining rapidly. According to the Wildlife Trust of South and West Wales (WTSWW), 43,626 puffins were counted on Skomer Island this year – a record high. The WTSWW said the increased number of puffins on the nature reserve was a “conservation success story”, but warned that the birds were still a species under threat which should continue to be protected. Skomer Island, a 2.92km² internationally important seabird island managed by the WTSWW, is located less than a mile from the Pembrokeshire coast. The island’s isolation means that it is protected from predators such as rats, cats, dogs and foxes, and also from the human impact on the mainland. As well as a growing population of puffins, Skomer is also home to 350,000 breeding pairs of manx shearwaters and thousands of guillemots and razorbills. Every year, the WTSWW undertakes its annual seabird count on the island to monitor the population of birds that return every spring to breed. The puffins are counted during the evening and early in the season by six members of staff. Grace Hunt Skomer Island, famous for its seabird populations, attracts around 25,000 visitors each year Skomer Island’s visitor officer, Rob Knott, said counting the birds was “quite a job”. “We split the island into sections and we go round about two hours before sunset when there’s the most on the land,” he said. “We get our clickers out and we count all the ones on the land, then the sea and the ones in the air as well.” The last record was set in 2023, when 42,513 puffins were recorded on and around the island. Conservationists believe puffins are thriving on Skomer due to the abundance of food and lack of predators “We think [the counting accuracy] is probably within a few hundred or perhaps a thousand birds,” said Rob. “Of course, that number is not going to be dead on the right number of puffins that are here, but because we do it in the same way every year and record those birds in the same way, it’s always been reported as the final number of that count that we do every year.” Rob Knott says counting the puffins on Skomer Island is “quite a job” Although the puffins seem to be thriving in Pembrokeshire, there is a rapid decline elsewhere. Like many seabird species, puffins are listed as vulnerable to extinction on the global International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) red list, as they face pollution, food shortages and climate change. According to the WTSWW, the growth in Skomer Island’s puffin population is “likely linked to the abundance of food in the wider area, meaning there is plenty of fish for chicks resulting in high breeding success”. They said the absence of rats and other predators on the island had also contributed to the seabirds’ success. Puffins are listed as vulnerable to extinction on the global IUCN Red List ‘Cautiously optimistic’ Rob said the island’s 25,000 visitors each year were often “mind-blown” by the number of puffins. He warned, however, that there were novel threats facing seabirds – including bird flu and the recent marine heatwave conditions experienced around parts of the *** coastline. “I think the monitoring work is absolutely vital, it informs how these seabirds are doing, particularly in this part of Wales but also on a wider scale in terms of how puffin numbers are doing throughout the ***,” he said. “It helps us look towards policy on how these numbers can increase in the future. “They’re doing well here, but we can point to this as a good example, there’s other places where these numbers are really going down quite rapidly. “We’re quite cautiously optimistic about the numbers that we’re seeing. “They’re absolutely iconic birds and the fact that they’re on the red list is wrong for so many reasons, not least, because they used to be absolutely thriving, so we’re doing what we can to try and improve those numbers.” Source link #Skomer #Island #puffin #numbers #hit #record #high #global #fall Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content] For verified travel tips and real support, visit: [Hidden Content]
  19. Diddy kidnapped me in plot to kill rapper, ex-aide says Diddy kidnapped me in plot to kill rapper, ex-aide says A former top aide to Sean “Diddy” Combs has testified the US hip-hop mogul threatened to kill her during her first day on the job and waved a gun as he kidnapped her years later in an angry rush to find and kill rapper Kid Cudi. Capricorn Clark’s account of Combs’ volatility and violence launched the third week of testimony at his Manhattan federal sex trafficking trial. Prosecutors called Clark, the former global brand director for Combs’ Bad Boy Entertainment, to support a charge that he led a two-decade racketeering conspiracy that relied on beefy bodyguards, death threats and the silence of frightened staff to ensure he got what he wanted. Combs, 55, has pleaded not guilty to an indictment alleging he abused his longtime girlfriend, R&B singer Cassie Ventura, and others. If convicted, he could face 15 years to life in prison. Clark’s tearful testimony came days after Cudi, whose legal name is Scott Mescudi, testified that she called him from a car outside his home in December 2011 and told him Combs had forced her to accompany him to Cudi’s house. Combs was angry Cudi was dating Cassie, whose legal name is Casandra Ventura, Clark said. Clark, referring to Combs as “Puff,” said he came to her home holding a gun and demanded she get dressed because “we’re going to kill Cudi.” Her voice shaky, Clark recounted how they rode in a ****** Cadillac Escalade to Cudi’s Los Angeles home, where Combs and his bodyguard entered the residence while Clark sat in the SUV and called Cassie. Clark testified she told Cassie that Combs “got me with a gun and brought me to Cudi’s house to kill him.” Clark said she heard Cudi in the background asking, “He’s in my house?” She said she told Cassie, “Stop him, he’s going to get himself killed.” Cassie told her she couldn’t stop Cudi, she recalled. Combs returned to the Escalade and asked Clark who she was talking to, she said, then grabbed the phone and called Cassie back. They next heard Cudi driving up the road, Clark said. Combs and his bodyguard got back in the SUV and chased after Cudi, finally giving up when they passed police cars that were heading to Cudi’s house. After the break-in, Clark said, Combs told her she had to convince Cudi “it wasn’t me.” “If you don’t convince him of that I’ll kill all you,” he said, punctuating his threat with an expletive, Clark said. Clark said she and Cassie then went to Cudi’s home, telling jurors: “We needed to talk to him. We needed to make sure he wasn’t going to make a police report about Puff.” After that, she said, she watched in shock as Combs viciously assaulted Cassie over her relationship with Cudi. Combs kicked Cassie with “100 per cent full force” to the legs and back as she curled on the ground outside his home in a fetal position and wept silently, Clark said. Clark said her “heart was breaking from seeing her get hit like that” and that neither she nor Combs’ bodyguard intervened. The answer prompted an objection from Combs’ lawyers, and Judge Arun Subramanian told jurors to disregard it. On Thursday, Cudi testified that he dated Cassie briefly in December 2011, believing she’d broken up with Combs, but they agreed over the holidays to break up. Assistant US Attorney Mitzi Steiner questioned Clark about her off-and-on employment with Combs from 2004-2018, beginning with her first day when she said the mogul and a bodyguard took her to Central Park after 9pm and said he hadn’t been aware of her past work for other rappers. Clark testified that Combs told her that if that work became an issue, he’d have to kill her. 1800 RESPECT (1800 737 732) National ******* Abuse and Redress Support Service 1800 211 028 Lifeline 13 11 14 Men’s Referral Service 1300 766 491 beyondblue 1300 22 4636 Source link #Diddy #kidnapped #plot #kill #rapper #exaide Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  20. Southwest Airlines reveals how much it will cost to check a bag Southwest Airlines reveals how much it will cost to check a bag Southwest Airlines customers will soon have to pay to check a bag. – Mario Tama/Getty Images Southwest Airlines has put a price tag on checking bags, a coveted free perk that is about to disappear as part of substantial changes the carrier is making to its service. For flights booked on May 28 and after, checking the first bag will cost $35 and $45 for the second piece of luggage. If the ticket was bought prior to Wednesday, the customer will still receive two free checked bags, the company announced. There are some exceptions, however: Members in the A-List tier of its Rapid Rewards loyalty program, holders of its branded credit card or those traveling on a business fare will be exempt from the charges. Southwest’s fee are aligned with other carriers’ prices. Delta Air Lines, American Airlines and United Airlines all charge between $35 to $40 for the first checked bag. Others, like JetBlue Airways and Frontier Airlines, charge different fees depending on various factors including if it’s purchased online or departure date. Southwest has always offered free checked bags since the airline started about 60 years ago and kept the policy in place when its competitors starting adding and increasing fees. In fact, the carrier has trademarked its “bags fly free” slogan, which has been a key part of its advertising. Adding these fees will likely instantly boost its bottom line because Southwest has two to three times as many checked bags as other airlines. Despite not charging for the first two checked bags, Southwest collected $83 million in baggage fees in 2024, according to Department of Transportation statistics. (Southwest charges $150 for a third checked bag and up to $200 for overweight luggage among other fees). However, that is a fraction of the baggage fees collected by other airlines, with American collecting $1.5 billion in 2024, while United pulled in $1.3 billion and Delta garnering $1 billion. Southwest has been under pressure to boost profitability since activist investor Elliott Investment Management took a $1.9 billion stake in the carrier last year. It has already announced that it’s ditching its open-seat policy in 2026 and retrofitting its planes with seats that have extra legroom for an additional charge. Southwest said customers were clamoring for those changes. When people switch to a competitor from Southwest, the company said the top reason passengers cite is open seating. But the change will also help the company charge some passengers more for their tickets. The airline has also changed the way it sells tickets. Traditionally it only sold them on Southwest’s website, but recently started sell them on Expedia to attract more customers. Also beginning Wednesday, Southwest will start selling “basic economy” fares, which are low-priced tickets but with tons of restrictions. It’s a ticket type that’s replacing its famous “Wanna Get Away” fare and is becoming increasingly common among larger carriers to compete against low fares offered by budget airlines. 24. Yes, 13.7M in US may lose health insurance as Democrats claim — but GOP bill isn’t only culprit Yes, 13.7M in US may lose health insurance as Democrats claim — but GOP bill isn’t only culprit Claim: U.S. President Donald Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill Act would end health insurance coverage for 13.7 million people. Rating: Rating: Mixture What’s True: According to a Congressional Budget Office preliminary estimate, about 13.7 million people would lose health insurance by 2034 due to what it described as the “combined effects of certain actions.” What’s False: Of those 13.7 million, an estimated 8.6 million people would lose health insurance by 2034 as a direct result of Trump’s budget bill. As U.S. President Donald Trump’s budget package known as the One Big Beautiful Bill Act made its way through Congress in mid-2025, Democrats claimed the legislation would cut nearly 14 million people from Medicaid, the government health insurance for low-income people. “13.7 million people will lose health care because of their bill,” alleged Pennsylvania Democrat U.S. Rep. Brendan Boyle in a May 13 committee hearing (archived). A clip of his remarks received over 30,000 likes on X as of this writing (archived). Many other Democrats, including New Yorkers Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Sen. Chuck Schumer, voiced similar claims; videos of their remarks spread on social media platforms like Bluesky (archived). Some Democrats also took to their own social media and accused Republicans of cutting health insurance for about 14 million Americans on platforms like Facebook. However, Democrats were placing a disproportionate amount of blame on the GOP’s bill. While it is true that millions would lose access to health care should the budget legislation pass, the total would be closer to 8.6 million people, per a May 11, 2025, letter from the Congressional Budget Office (CBO). CBO also estimated in the same letter how many people may lose health insurance coverage due to other policy decisions — including if lawmakers allow a policy written by Democrats to expire as scheduled. Those actions, taken together, resulted in the CBO estimating that 13.7 million people may lose access to health insurance. Thus, we rate the claim spread by Democratic lawmakers as a mixture of truth and falsehood. The One Big Beautiful Bill Act passed the House of Representatives on May 22, 2025; it is not law as of this writing. It must pass the Senate and be signed by Trump in order to become law. CBO estimates for the GOP bill On May 11, 2025, by request from Democratic lawmakers, the Congressional Budget Office estimated “the combined effects on health insurance coverage that would result from certain actions.” (The letter is titled, “E&C Reconciliation Recommendations,” a reference to the U.S. House of Representatives’ Committee on Energy and Commerce’s budget reconciliation recommendations. Budget reconciliation is a Congressional process that expedites passage of funding-related legislation. The One Big Beautiful Bill Act includes these reconciliation recommendations.) “In total, we estimate that the legislation would reduce the number of people with health insurance by at least 8.6 million in 2034,” CBO said of the GOP’s legislative proposal specifically. That figure, per the letter, includes 7.7 million people who would lose coverage because of proposed changes to Medicaid in the legislation; see Subtitle D, Part 1 for those Medicaid changes. Another estimated 900,000 beneficiaries would lose coverage due to new eligibility requirements for health insurance bought under the Affordable Care Act (ACA). Republicans included those ACA requirements in the bill, too — see section 44201, “ADDRESSING WASTE, FRAUD, AND ABUSE IN THE ACA EXCHANGES.” Add 7.7 million and 900,000 together to get 8.6 million who would lose health insurance by 2034 as a direct result of the GOP’s bill, according to the CBO estimate. (The letter actually estimates that 1.8 million in total would lose health insurance by 2034 due to the ACA rule changes, but half that number is already included in a separate estimate — the 4.2 million discussed in the paragraph below — because of how CBO handles proposed rules not yet finalized; hence, 900,000 instead of 1.8 million included in the 8.6 million total above.) Where the 13.7 million figure comes from Another 4.2 million would lose health insurance coverage in 2034 due to the “expiration of the expanded premium tax credits.” Democrats first established the “premium tax credit” through the Affordable Care Act in 2014, also known as Obamacare. These tax credits help eligible participants pay for health insurance. While the original credit does not expire, Democrats expanded the subsidy program as part of COVID-19 relief legislation — but set an expiration date for the expanded offerings as Jan. 1, 2026. It is true that Republicans could extend that deadline — but it is not accurate to say that the “Big, Beautiful Bill” ends those tax credits. Here is the summary CBO provided in its letter (emphasis ours): In total, CBO estimates that these three actions would increase the number of people without health insurance by at least 13.7 million in 2034. Of that total effect, 5 million—stemming from the expiration of the expanded premium tax credits and half the estimated effect of the proposed marketplace rule—is already reflected in CBO’s baseline projections. To summarize: Add up 4.2 million, 1.8 million and 7.7 million, and you get the 13.7 million number pushed by Democrats — but only 8.6 million would directly lose health insurance coverage because of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act. That, however, is according to a preliminary estimate by CBO, not a final one — CBO hasn’t estimated how the interaction between these policy proposals may impact how many people might lose health care. “We anticipate that doing so will somewhat further increase the estimated number of people without health insurance,” CBO wrote in the letter. The GOP’s bill has also undergone changes since the House passed it and is likely to undergo even more changes once it reaches debate in the Senate.
