  2. Davide Ancelotti: Italian positive after Rangers meeting – but could Modric follow? Davide Ancelotti: Italian positive after Rangers meeting – but could Modric follow? Davide Ancelotti held fresh talks with Rangers about their managerial vacancy in London last week and wants the Ibrox job, with further discussions planned over the next few days. The Italian was approached by representatives of the Scottish Premiership club earlier this month and was able to outline his vision at an in-person meeting. It was one in a series of conversations between the Ibrox club and the Ancelotti, 35, who has been working under father Carlo at Real Madrid. It is believed those discussions went well, Ancelotti is first choice, and that a resolution can be reached in the coming days. Real players have heard about Ancelotti’s potential destination, including 39-year-old midfielder Luka Modric, who is leaving the Spanish giants this summer but has yet to decide on his next move. However, Rangers’ ongoing takeover has slowed the process. Current chief executive Patrick Stewart is leading the manager search along with the existing Ibrox board. However, the club’s prospective new owners – an American consortium involving Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises Global Football Group – and sporting director-in-waiting Kevin Thelwell are also in the conversation. It had been thought Ancelotti would join his father in his new role as boss of the Brazilian national team, but those plans have now changed as he focuses on becoming a head coach in his own right. Ancelotti previously assisted Carlo at Bayern Munich, Napoli and Everton, having been at AC Milan and Borgomanero as a player. 3. NSW Police arrest man 30 years after disappearance of Illawarra mum Pauline Sowry NSW Police arrest man 30 years after disappearance of Illawarra mum Pauline Sowry A man has been arrested 30 years on from the disappearance of Pauline Sowry. The shock breakthrough in the cold case was announced on Thursday morning and follows the formation of Strike Force Anthea in 2022 that was set up to examine the circumstances surrounding Ms Sowry’s disappearance. Ms Sowry, also known by her married name Pauline Lawrence, was 49 years old when she was last seen by her family in the northern suburbs of Wollongong in December 1993. On Thursday morning, police attended a unit in Murphys Ave, Gywnneville, about 8.30am and arrested a 64-year-old man. He remains in custody at Wollongong Police Station. NSW Police Southern Region commander Assistant Commissioner Joe Cassar praised what he called the “tireless commitment” of officers to find answers for Ms Sowry’s family. “I commend the tireless commitment of our officers in finding answers for Pauline’s family and they continue to work hard to bring this matter before the courts,” Assistant Commissioner Cassar said on Thursday. Assistant Commissioner Cassar and Wollongong Police District commander Superintendent Karen Cook police will address the media on the arrest on Thursday. Ms Sowry’s son, Jason Lawrence, also released a short statement following the arrest. Camera IconNSW Police have arrested a man 30 years after the disappearance of Pauline Sowry. Supplied Credit: News Corp Australia “We welcome today’s news that a person has been arrested in relation to the suspicious disappearance of our beloved mum,” he said. “We have waited more than 30 years to hear today’s news. “We miss her every day and her disappearance has taken a huge toll on myself and our entire family. “We thank the police officers for never giving up hope and we look forward to the outcome of this investigation,” he said. The arrest follows an earlier breakthrough in October last year when the taskforce discovered items of clothing in bushland in the Illawarra region related to the case. Searches in Mary and May 2023 and October 2024 in the area of Figtree near Wollongong turned up a cream button-down long sleeve blouse with a coloured stitching design and ****** pants. Mr Cassar, speaking in December, said the discoveries could prove crucial in determining Ms Sowry’s final movements. “We are releasing these images to try to jog someone’s memory. The clothing includes some hand stitching in coloured cotton and we know Pauline was known for altering both her and her children’s clothing, ” he said. “We are not ruling out further searches as we continue to investigate the circumstances of Pauline’s disappearance. “Pauline’s family deserve to know what happened to her and to get some closure following her disappearance.” In a statement from December, Jason said he hoped the clothes could lead to a breakthrough in the investigation. Camera IconPolice search bushland after the formation of a new taskforce to look into the case. NSW Police Credit: News Corp Australia “We don’t want to spend another Christmas not knowing what happened to mum. We deserve to know what happened to her and to give her a proper send-off and lay her to rest,” he said. “It’s been 30 years since my mother’s disappearance, she’s been sadly missed and this has been a devastating effect on our family, including the loss of her two sons, my brothers Paul and Adam, to mental health and her parents, Bill and Pat, who have also passed away not knowing what’s happened to their daughter.” A 2008 coronial inquest found that Ms Sowry had died, most likely after an unconfirmed sighting in 1994. In May 2024, police issued a call for information on a white 1968 Holden HK Kingswood sedan said to be in “pristine” condition that police believed Ms Sowry may have travelled in south of Wollongong. 4. Trump wants Congress to approve $9 billion in DOGE cuts — including more than $1 billion in cuts to public broadcasting Trump wants Congress to approve $9 billion in DOGE cuts — including more than $1 billion in cuts to public broadcasting The Trump administration is aiming for Congress to push through billions in DOGE spending cuts. The package includes cuts to the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and USAID, per an OMB spokesperson. The $9.4 billion represents a fraction of the roughly $150 billion that DOGE said it has saved. President Donald Trump wants to make some DOGE cuts official. The president will send a $9.4 billion rescissions package to Congress next week, giving Republicans an opportunity to enact cuts suggested by Elon Musk’s White House DOGE office. An Office of Management and Budget spokesperson confirmed to Business Insider that the package will include $1.1 billion in cuts to the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and $8.3 billion in spending reductions to foreign aid at the US Agency for International Development. Trump is aiming stop the CPB from funding PBS and NPR, which was the subject of an executive order that he issued earlier this month. The president has long targeted funding for public broadcasting. The $9.4 billion in spending reductions is far below where many conservatives would like it to be, but codifying cuts from DOGE is a goal that’s been firmly embraced by House Speaker Mike Johnson of Louisiana. “.@ElonMusk and the entire @DOGE team have done INCREDIBLE work exposing waste, fraud, and abuse across the federal government,” Johnson said in an X post on Wednesday. “The House is eager and ready to act on DOGE’s findings so we can deliver even more cuts to big government that President Trump wants and the American people demand,” he added. The White House sought to have Congress enact the spending cuts weeks ago, but GOP lawmakers had been focused on drafting and passing Trump’s “one big beautiful bill,” the tax and immigration package that narrowly made it out of the lower chamber and faces an uncertain future in the Senate. The rescissions request comes as Musk — who will take a step back from his work with DOGE in the coming weeks — criticized the Republican-led bill in an interview with CBS. “I was, like, disappointed to see the massive spending bill, frankly, which increases the budget deficit, not just decrease it, and undermines the work that the DOGE team is doing,” Musk said during the interview. “I think a vote can be big, or it could be beautiful. I don’t know if it could be both.” In a recent interview with The Washington Post, Musk also said it’s an “uphill battle trying to improve things” in Washington — as he spoke about the backlash that DOGE has so far faced this year. “DOGE is just becoming the whipping boy for everything,” he told the newspaper. “So, like, something bad would happen anywhere, and we would get blamed for it even if we had nothing to do with it.” Read the original article on Business Insider Source link #Trump #Congress #approve #billion #DOGE #cuts #including #billion #cuts #public #broadcasting Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

South Korea’s central bank on Thursday raised its policy rate to curb inflation, delivering six back-to-back rate hikes for the first time. (Photo by Wang Yiliang/Xinhua via Getty Images) Wang Yiliang | Xinhua News Agency | Getty Images South Korea’s central bank cut its policy interest rate by 25 basis points in a decision announced Thursday as the country faces a double-whammy of protracted political turmoil and Trump’s sweeping tariffs. The Bank of Korea reduced rates to 2.5% from 2.75%, its lowest level since August 2022, in line with expectations among economists polled by Reuters. That marked the central bank’s fourth cut in the current easing cycle. The quarter-percentage rate cut came as the country continued to grapple with heightened political uncertainty following the botched attempt by former leader Yoon Suk Yeol to impose martial law in December. South Korea was slapped with 25% reciprocal tariffs by the Trump administration, which were later suspended for 90 days. South Korean leaders are racing to strike a deal with the U.S. government before the July 8 deadline. Both sides have said they aimed to agree on a package on tariffs and economic cooperation by then, but the South Korean minister for trade and industry said recently there was not enough time, and the upcoming election could delay it further. 6. Elon Musk thanks Trump, says he’s leaving government work with DOGE Elon Musk thanks Trump, says he’s leaving government work with DOGE Tesla CEO Elon Musk reacts while wearing a cap with the words “Gulf of America” as he attends a cabinet meeting held by U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House in Washington, D.C., U.S., April 30, 2025. Evelyn Hockstein | Reuters With his official stint in government coming to an end, Elon Musk thanked President Donald Trump on Wednesday for “the opportunity to reduce wasteful spending.” Since joining the second Trump administration at the beginning of the term in January, Musk has led the Department of Government Efficiency, tasked with slashing the size of the federal government. As a so-called special government employee, Musk can work for the administration for 130 days in a calendar year. The end of May marks 130 days since Trump’s inauguration. “The @DOGE mission will only strengthen over time as it becomes a way of life throughout the government,” Musk wrote. Musk, the world’s richest person, is CEO of Tesla, SpaceX and artificial intelligence startup xAI. Musk said this week that he plans to focus more on his businesses. On a Tesla earnings call in April, Musk said that his time spent running DOGE would drop significantly by the end of May. On the same call, he said that he would still spend a “day or two per week” on government work until the end of Trump’s term. Musk has also said he plans to keep his small office at the White House. During his first 100 days working with the Trump administration, Musk said in an interview with Fox Digital News that he had worked in Washington, D.C. on his DOGE initiative “7 days a week, or close to 7 days a week.” Legal risks are now building up for Musk with myriad cases filed in the U.S. alleging that he violated federal laws while leading DOGE. On Wednesday, pension fund leaders sent a letter to Tesla’s board saying that they should require Musk to put in 40 hours per week, at a minimum, at the EV maker as a condition to attain any future CEO pay package. 7. 5 ChatGPT hacks to maximize your productivity — here’s how to try them 5 ChatGPT hacks to maximize your productivity — here’s how to try them Sometimes your to-do list looks more like a novel. Anything that might help you successfully cross off some of those items is appealing, and ChatGPT has some tricks that can aid you in powering through the list well beyond simply drafting business emails or summarizing long conversations. After some experiments and hearing from others who have created their own productivity hacks with ChatGPT, I’ve put together a handful of particularly useful prompts you can use when organization and motivation are low, but there’s still a lot to do. 1. Time Blocking (Image credit: Pixabay) Scheduling out your day and week is the most basic, necessary, and often difficult part of being productive. Explaining everything about the demands on your time can take even longer. Luckily, ChatGPT’s models are now advanced enough that you can be fairly brief and straightforward with your requests. Tell ChatGPT, “I want to be productive without burning out. Help me create a daily routine that includes time for deep work, Zoom calls, meals, and short walks.” You may like Though simple, that’s plenty for ChatGPT to start with. The AI will ask follow-up questions, and you can provide as much detail as you want. The more detail you provide, the more useful the routine will be, but the conversational approach makes it feel less like another homework assignment. Once it has enough information, you’ll see your day broken into sections. For me, that meant blocks of time for professional work like writing current assignments, looking for new ideas, applying for positions, and even email and admin. They were all broken up with time for breaks, meals, family time, exercise, and even sleep here and there. It wasn’t exactly what I wanted, but it was a perfect starting point that I could then refine, and a lot easier to work from than a blank calendar. Letting ChatGPT draft your day removes a lot of decision fatigue. Not having to ask “what should I do next ?” all of the time makes for a much more productive week. 2. Meeting Magic A friend in an office job with lots of meetings led me to another useful prompt. She spends a lot of time preparing for meetings and often feels over- or underprepared, depending on how much time and energy she has to invest in getting ready. The advent of ChatGPT has reduced a lot of the stress of running a million meetings thanks to variations on the prompt: “Can you help me draft an agenda, key discussion points, and potential questions to ask?” Again, the conversational approach to organizing relieves a lot of stress. All she has to do is describe the kind of meeting and people who will be there, along with any documents and presentations that she is allowed to put into the system. ChatGPT provides her a draft introduction, a timeline and agenda for the meeting, possible action items to make sure people know about, and even possible questions she might field and ideas for how to answer them. The more she uses it, the better these guides apparently get, especially in learning her voice and adapting to whatever obstacles have cropped up during meetings so they don’t present a problem the next time. Sign up for breaking news, reviews, opinion, top tech deals, and more. 3. Decisions AI (Image credit: Pixabay) When you have to make a big decision, the factors to consider can make it hard to navigate to the best answer. Someone who recently had to make some of the biggest decisions of their life told me they struggled with pros and cons lists and other traditional decision-making strategies. He wanted to be efficient about it without missing anything important, and found conversation with ChatGPT to be an ideal method. He told the AI, “I’m thinking of moving to a new city for a job I think I would like more than my current role. Can you help me weigh the pros and cons and ask questions I might not have considered?” Now, you probably don’t have decisions at that level to make every day, but the template of asking about pros and cons and getting ChatGPT to bring up questions you might not have consdiered could apply to anything from the life-changing example to something as simple as figuring out what software to use for a project or who to invite to collaborate on a presentation. 4. Task Slicer One of the most difficult aspects of being productive is seeing how one giant project can be split into more digestible chunks. I’ve found ChatGPT to be a real help in this regard. For instance, I’ve asked it, “Help me turn my goal of organizing my home office into small, focused tasks I can do in 20-minute chunks over the next week.” The response from ChatGPT did exactly as I requested. Each task was small, relatively easy, and fast. Decluttering, clearing one drawer at a time, sorting miscellaneous cables, and so on, until a week later, I had a very nice, streamlined setup with everything labeled and easy to find. Making small, winnable activities isn’t the approach everyone likes, but it’s genuinely sped up everything I have to do. 5. Learning Acceleration (Image credit: Mudassar Iqbal / Pixabay) Another friend told me how ChatGPT has maximized their productivity in an oddly unproductive way, helping them cram when they haven’t had time to study a subject. For instance, fifteen minutes before a call about blockchain, which he knew little of, he asked ChatGPT: “Can you explain the basics of blockchain in fifteen minutes, with key concepts and real-world applications?” Five seconds later, he dove into a ****** course, breaking down decentralization, the ledger, and how it connects with cryptocurrencies, supply chains, and smart contracts. He looked like he knew what he was talking about and impressed the person he was meeting with. I wouldn’t say it’s a great plan for everyday life, but when you’re pushed for time, ChatGPT can be the short-term tutor to save the day. Productive Power These hacks aren’t a solution on their own; they’re really more like nudges to do what you already know you have to do. ChatGPT doesn’t magically make you productive, but it removes a lot of the friction that keeps you from being productive. Sometimes that’s all you need. And if you don’t have someone to be that life coach, ChatGPT can be the friend who helps you get out of your own way. It’s worth a shot. After all, the worst-case scenario is that ChatGPT just gives you a weird metaphor about productivity. But you might just see your afternoons free up instead. 9. Llangadog rustler steals 73 ewes from farm Llangadog rustler steals 73 ewes from farm A farmer under “financial pressure” stole more than 70 pregnant sheep from a neighbour, a court has heard. Hywel Williams, 40, from Llangadog, Carmarthenshire, pleaded guilty to the theft of 73 ewes from Rhodri Llyr Evans. Some of the animals were found on land owned by Williams near Llandysul which neighboured Mr Evans’ farm, following a local tip-off in March. Others were recovered without their identifying ear tags at a local abattoir and an auction mart while some were given to another farmer to pay off a debt. Williams, who lives on his 270-acre farm with his 81-year-old uncle, told Aberystwyth Magistrates’ Court he “deeply” regretted his actions. He said he had the sheep because he was under financial pressure and accepted his actions were “unacceptable and feels ashamed”. Mr Evans said the theft had put “unbearable stress” on his family and business. The sheep stolen were all ewes in lamb, in an area which has seen the highest proportion of livestock theft in the *** between April 2024 and March 2025, the court heard. Williams was handed a 12-month suspended sentence and ordered to undertake 250 hours of unpaid work and to pay more than £5,000 in compensation. 10. Recreational fishers fined for breaking size and bag limits in Pilbara Recreational fishers fined for breaking size and bag limits in Pilbara Three recreational fishers have been hit with hefty fines totalling more than $5000 after being caught with undersized and protected fish during separate inspections by Fisheries officers in the Pilbara. On February 22, a 56-year-old man and a 44-year-old skipper, both from Karratha, had their boat inspected while fishing in the Dampier Archipelago, and were found with eight barcheek coral trout, three of which were less than the legal minimum size of 45cm. The skipper made an admission at Karratha Courthouse on May 20, that he had taken four of the barcheek coral trout, with recreational fishing rules only allowing a daily bag limit of one for the species. Both men were charged with breaching size and bag limit rules. Each was fined a general penalty of $500 and an additional mandatory $1080 for the fish involved in the offences. On the same day in Karratha Courthouse, a 60-year-old man from Toogoom, Queensland was fined $2229 for fishing offences on October 8 last year. The court heard that the Queensland man was the only one on the boat, when Fisheries officers at the Johns Creek Boat Ramp in Point Samson checked it. His haul included six blue tuskfish — three over the limit and all smaller than the 400mm legal size — as well as four western yellowfin bream, which also failed to meet the minimum 300mm size. Regional Compliance North director Stuart McDowall said fishers should expect that Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development Fisheries officers may inspect them at sea or at boat ramps. “Fishers must make themselves aware of the rules prior to going fishing and ensure that they fish to bag and size limits,” he said. The rules for recreational fishing are available in the Recreational fishing guide 2025 and information can also be found online by searching the rules by species and location. 11. California woman wants answers after her home was used in a fake rental scam California woman wants answers after her home was used in a fake rental scam A Rosemead, California, woman says she’s had strangers arrive at her front door after a scammer falsely listed her home as a short-term rental online. “We found out our house was listed on Booking.com,” Alexis Cavish told KTLA 5 News in a story published May 16. “We are not renting out our house.” Cavish says she doesn’t even have an account with the website. The address on the listing was hers, however, it included photos of another property, and was priced at nearly $400 per night. She’s had to turn away visitors looking to check in with booking confirmation emails in hand. Don’t miss “Luckily, so far, the people have been really nice,” Cavish said. “But they’re strangers coming to the house where I have kids.” She criticized Booking.com for publishing listings without any verification. “I’m frustrated because the company is not doing its due diligence,” she said. “Why doesn’t the owner have to prove some ownership before charging people money to stay?” A growing trend in online rental scams According to KTLA 5 News consumer reporter David Lazarus, this type of fraud is becoming more frequent. “It’s a common enough scam that there’s a name for it — short-term rental scams — and it’s most common on Airbnb and Booking.com,” Lazarus said in the report. These scams can involve criminals creating fake listings using either stolen or generic photos and attaching them to real addresses. Some booking platforms rely on automated systems, which can allow fraudulent listings to go live without being flagged or verified. The rise of digital platforms and third-party payment apps has made it easier for scammers to exploit homeowners and renters. In cases like Cavish’s, the fraud is a financial and safety concern. Read more: This is how American car dealers use the ‘4-square method’ to make big profits off you — and how you can ensure you pay a fair price for all your vehicle costs How to protect yourself Lazarus warned travelers to proceed cautiously when booking short-term stays online. “In terms of any payment, communication, don’t leave the platform,” Lazarus said. “So, if the listing says they want you to pay with Zelle or Venmo or some other digital payment plan, and especially if they ask for crypto, walk away.” Another simple precaution is to cross-reference the property’s address with Google Maps. If there are exterior photos of the building in the listing and they look different, that’s a major red flag. One more tip is to verify hosts and read reviews carefully. When a listing lacks reviews or seems too good to be true, it just might be. For homeowners, checking periodically to ensure their property isn’t being misused online and setting up Google alerts for their home’s address may help catch scams early. Meanwhile, if you find a suspicious listing, consider reporting it to the platform. Some platforms have dedicated channels for reporting fraud, and flagging a suspicious listing can prevent others from falling victim. 13. Trump administration says it will fly migrant back to U.S. after judge rules his deportation “ignored” due process Trump administration says it will fly migrant back to U.S. after judge rules his deportation “ignored” due process The federal government is working to secure a charter flight to return a man who was removed from the U.S. back to America so he can have proper due process proceedings, the Justice Department said in court documents filed Wednesday. Last week, U.S. District Judge Brian Murphy ordered the man, only known by the initials O.C.G., to be returned to the United States after he found that necessary due process steps in his removal proceedings were “ignored” by the Trump administration. O.C.G.’s attorneys argued that he has no criminal history and sought asylum in the United States after multiple violent attacks against him in his native country of Guatemala. In March 2024, O.C.G. entered the United States illegally and was deported. After making it back to the United States again last year, he presented himself to Border Patrol for asylum proceedings. An immigration judge found in February 2025 that O.C.G. would face serious harm if he were sent back to Guatemala and ordered a “withholding of removal” that barred deportation back to his home country. Two days after the immigration judge’s February decision, O.C.G. says he was placed on a bus and removed without due process to Mexico, where his attorneys said he was previously held for random and ****** during his second attempt to get to the United States. He submitted evidence at his immigration hearing of his experiences in Mexico, and as a result the immigration judge said that O.C.G. could not be removed to a country other than Guatemala without additional due process. After O.C.G. was sent to Mexico by the United States, ******** authorities removed him to Guatemala, where he remains in hiding, according to court documents. “[The] immigration judge told O.C.G.— consistent with this Court’s understanding of the law—that he could not be removed to a country other than his native Guatemala, at least not without some additional steps in the process,” Murphy wrote in his order last week. “Those necessary steps, and O.C.G.’s pleas for help, were ignored.” Murphy had previously ordered additional fact finding in the case, after the Trump administration submitted a declaration under oath that O.C.G. told government officials that he had no fear of being sent to Mexico. O.C.G had previously submitted a declaration to the court stating that he was told at the last minute before his removal that he was being sent to Mexico, and that he was denied a request to speak to his attorneys beforehand. The Justice Department admitted to Murphy that there was no witness who could verify the government’s account of O.C.G.’s removal under oath and the declaration was made in error. “The only evidence before the Court therefore is O.C.G.’s uncontroverted assertion that he was given no notice of his transfer to Mexico and no opportunity to explain why it would be dangerous to send him there,” Murphy wrote in his order mandating the man’s return. “Defendants’ retraction of their prior sworn statement makes inexorable the already-strong conclusion that O.C.G. is likely to succeed in showing that his removal lacked any semblance of due process,” the judge added. The Trump administration’s push to ramp up deportations has drawn other scrutiny from other federal judges who argue deportees aren’t being given enough due process. Another judge ordered the Trump administration to “facilitate” the return of Kilmar Abrego Garcia, who the government admitted was sent to El Salvador in error. The Supreme Court affirmed that ruling, but Abrego Garcia remains in a Salvadoran prison, and the Trump administration says it’s up to that country’s government to return him. 14. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang on why chip exports to China are important Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang on why chip exports to China are important In a Wednesday interview with CNBC’s Jim Cramer, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang explained why he thinks it’s necessary to export his company’s artificial intelligence technology to China, saying trade with the country is vital if the U.S. wants to be a global leader in AI. “That’s probably the most important strategic reason to be in China,” Huang said. “Because there are so many developers there and because the world is going to adopt technology from one country or another — and we prefer it to be the American technology stack.” Nvidia posted better-than-expected earnings and revenue Wednesday night, sending shares up in extended trading. While the quarter showed that demand for Nvidia’s technology continues to grow, Huang said on the call that President Donald Trump’s restrictions on its chips mean that the “$50 billion China market is effectively closed to U.S. industry.” Huang told Cramer the regulations will lead to the loss of billions in revenue to Nvidia and tax revenue to the U.S. But more importantly, he emphasized, losing out on the ******** market has lasting global ramifications for the U.S. Historically, he said, the platform that succeeds is the one that has the most developers — and China is home to 50% of the world’s AI researchers. “We want every developer in the world to prefer the American technology stacks,” Huang said. Once that happens, he continued, “American technology stacks will run AI the best all over the world.” Huang claimed Nvidia will “keep our dialogue going” with the Trump administration. “We understand the technology best, and we understand how computing works,” Huang said. “We understand how AI works, and we’ve been in China for 30 years, and so this is an area that we have a lot of, a lot of expertise, and we’re going to continue to share that.” Jim Cramer’s Guide to Investing Sign up now for the CNBC Investing Club to follow Jim Cramer’s every move in the market. 16. Elon Musk says he is leaving Trump administration Elon Musk says he is leaving Trump administration BBC Watch: Elon Musk says he is “disappointed” with Trump’s “big, beautiful bill”, in interview with CBS Sunday Morning Billionaire Elon Musk has said his time leading President Donald Trump’s cost-cutting task force is coming “to an end”. Musk has helped lead the Department of Government Efficiency – known as Doge – since its inception this year. He was designated as a “special government employee” – which allows him to work a government job for 130 days each year. Measured from Trump’s inauguration on 20 January, he would hit that limit towards the end of May. Musk thanked Trump for the role in a post on X and said he believed the cost-cutting agency would become a “way of life throughout government”. “As my scheduled time as a Special Government Employee comes to an end, I would like to thank President @realDonaldTrump for the opportunity to reduce wasteful spending,” Musk wrote on X. He added the agency will “only strengthen over time”. A White House official told news outlet Semafor that Musk’s “offboarding” as a special government employee would begin on Wednesday night. Musk’s exit comes after he criticised Trump’s “big, beautiful” bill, which includes multi-trillion dollar tax breaks and a pledge to increase defence spending. 18. Social Security plans to add artificial intelligence to phone systems, commissioner says Social Security plans to add artificial intelligence to phone systems, commissioner says Washington — Frank Bisignano, commissioner of the Social Security Administration, told CBS News that he believes technology, and specifically artificial intelligence, could be the key to improving his agency’s customer service, despite recent changes that have prompted concern among some of the nearly 69 million Americans that receive Social Security each month. “We’re bringing a massive technology effort to transform the servicing agenda,” Bisignano said. “We’re gonna bring AI into the phone system…I intend it to be completed this year.” The agency gets about 390,000 calls per day, according to SSA data. The average wait time for those calls as of April was 68 minutes, down from 112 minutes in January. “I say, we’re gonna meet our beneficiaries where they want to be,” said Bisgnano, who was CEO of financial services company Fiserv before being tapped by President Trump in December to lead the SSA. “You want to come into a field office? We we’ll always be there. You want to meet us on the web? We will be there. And you want to meet us on the phone, we’ll be there.” The SSA announced in March that it would require in-person identity checks at field offices for new and existing beneficiaries, with some limited exemptions. Following backlash to the move, however, the White House in April backed off that requirement, saying that seniors and other recipients could verify their identities over the phone. About six million seniors would have faced a 45-mile trip to reach an SSA office, according to an analysis from the Center on Budget and Public Policies. There are questions about how Bisgnano plans to implement changes despite a smaller workforce. In February, the agency said it intended to cut its staffing levels down from about 57,000 to 50,000, a 12% reduction. The website for the White House’s Elon Musk-led Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE, has identified more than a dozen field offices for closure. Bisignano argues that the cuts won’t prevent the SSA from increasing its efficiency, which he believes can be achieved “through technology and process engineering.” The SSA turns 90 this year, but as the U.S. ages, the gap between benefit payments and revenue is widening. The Congressional Budget Office estimates that by 2033, the fund used to pay retirement and survivor benefits will be exhausted. “There’s lots of senators that I’ve heard from that have all ideas about how to fix it,” Bisignano said. “So, we need to just go to work on how to fix it.” Bisignano is seeking to reassure Americans who are planning to file for Social Security in 10 years that they will still receive their full benefits, not just a portion of them. “Everybody is committed to Social Security for the rest of time.” Maurice DuBois Maurice DuBois is an Emmy Award-winning journalist and co-anchor of the “CBS Evening News” in New York, the flagship evening broadcast on CBS News. 19. Gaza warehouse broken into by ‘hordes of hungry people’ says WFP Gaza warehouse broken into by ‘hordes of hungry people’ says WFP The UN’s World Food Programme (WFP) says that “hordes of hungry people” have broken into a food supply warehouse in central Gaza. Two people are reported to have died and several others injured in the incident, the programme said, adding that it was still confirming details. Video footage from AFP news agency showed crowds breaking into the Al-Ghafari warehouse in Deir Al-Balah and taking bags of flour and cartons of food as gunshots rang out. It was not immediately clear where the gunshots came from. In a statement, the WFP said humanitarian needs in Gaza had “spiralled out of control” after an almost three-month Israeli blockade that was eased last week. The WFP said that food supplies had been pre-positioned at the warehouse for distribution. The programme added: “Gaza needs an immediate scale-up of food assistance. This is the only way to reassure people that they will not starve.” The WFP said it had “consistently warned of alarming and deteriorating conditions on the ground, and the risks imposed by limiting humanitarian aid to hungry people in desperate need of assistance”. Israeli authorities said on Wednesday that 121 trucks belonging to the UN and the international community carrying humanitarian aid including flour and food were transferred into Gaza. Israel began to allow a limited amount of aid into Gaza last week. A controversial US and Israeli-backed group – the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) – was also established as a private aid distribution system. It uses US security contractors and bypasses the UN, which said it was unworkable and unethical. The US and Israeli governments say the GHF, which has set up four distribution centres in southern and central Gaza, is preventing aid from being stolen by ******, which the armed group denies doing. The UN Humans Right Office said 47 people were injured on Tuesday after people overran one of the GHF distribution sites in the southern city of Rafah, a day after it began working there. Another senior UN official told journalists on Wednesday that desperate crowds were looting cargo off of UN aid trucks. Jonathan Whittall, the head of the UN’s humanitarian office for the occupied ************ territories, also said there was no evidence that ****** was diverting aid coordinated through credible humanitarian channels. He said the real theft of relief goods since the beginning of the war had been carried out by criminal gangs which the Israeli army “allowed to operate in proximity to the Kerem Shalom crossing point in Gaza”. The UN has argued that a surge of aid like the one during the recent ceasefire between Israeli and ****** would reduce the threat of looting by hungry people and allow it to make full use of its well-established network of distribution across the Gaza Strip. 21. Glacier collapse buries Swiss village in mud and rocks Glacier collapse buries Swiss village in mud and rocks STORY: :: A Swiss mountain village is buried in mud and rock after a glacier collapsed :: Blatten, Switzerland :: May 28, 2025 :: Authorities say they monitored the movements for weeks and had evacuated residents :: Raphael Mayoraz, Natural Hazards Office “Now this worst-case scenario has happened. That means the 3 million cubic meters of rock that fell onto the glacier have all come down with the glacier. And that is very, very rare. We couldn’t find any example of this in history, but now everything has come down.” On Wednesday, the glacier partially collapsed, creating a huge cloud that covered part of the mountain as rock and debris came cascading down towards the village. One person is currently missing, officials said. Drone footage broadcast by Swiss national broadcaster SRF showed a vast plain of mud and soil completely covering part of the southwestern village of Blatten, the river running through it and the wooded sides of the surrounding valley. Experts consulted by Reuters said it was difficult to assess the extent to which rising temperatures spurred by climate change had triggered the collapse because of the role the crumbling mountainside had played. Buildings and infrastructure in Blatten, whose roughly 300 inhabitants were evacuated on May 19 after geologists identified the risk of an imminent avalanche of rock and ice from above, were battered by the rockslide, officials said.
