  2. Free yoga sessions for people in north Devon Free yoga sessions for people in north Devon Hattie McCann BBC News, Devon BBC The groups meet every Sunday in four parks across north Devon A community group in north Devon is hoping to get people active and improve their mental well-being with free yoga sessions. The Community Yoga Project started running the sessions earlier this year and now has 250 members. Hannah Shackleton founded the group because she wanted to remove financial and societal barriers to people being able to do, what she considers to be, a very important practice for one’s mental health. She said it is for everyone: “We have people come along with babies in prams, people who have toddlers clambering over them, through to older people in wheelchairs and with walkers, it’s really special.” About 250 people now join together for the sessions spread across Barnstaple, Bideford, Ilfracombe, and South Molton The group relies on donations and funding as they pay their yoga teachers but want to keep the yoga free, particularly in relation to the cost-of-living crisis. Ms Shackleton said: “People might not have the disposable income to pay 10 or 12, or even seven pounds on a class, that is why we run these sessions.” For the team of yoga teachers, it is also about breaking stereotypes. Aimee Hill, one of the instructors, said it was not about competing for who can be the most bendy, she likes to make it about community. “It’s a shared experience which helps fight loneliness”, she added. Ms Shackleton also wants to make yoga more accessible in terms of geography. She said: “Everybody talks about how nothing comes to north Devon, and if it does it’s just the main towns. “It would be great to take [Free Yoga] into other places, Torrington, Holsworthy, any where that wants us.” Source link #Free #yoga #sessions #people #north #Devon Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  3. Estrella makes history with manganese drill program in Timor-Leste Estrella makes history with manganese drill program in Timor-Leste Estrella Resources has officially broken new ground by launching Timor-Leste’s first modern metallic mineral exploration program, punching-in the company’s maiden diamond drill hole at the highly prospective Ira Miri manganese prospect. In mobilising a man-portable diamond rig from Dili to the Lautem region, Estrella says its joint venture (JV) with the East Timorese Government’s Murak Rai Timor and drilling contractor CoreSearch marks the beginning of an intrepid new era for resource development in the South East Asian nation. The inaugural hole is now underway, targeting manganese mineralisation just below an outcropping unit. The company has also started initial trenching to pinpoint the key geological contact within the Noni Formation. The broader campaign will comprise an initial 3000 metres of diamond drilling and 10,000m of reverse circulation drilling, followed by a further 10,000m of reverse circulation drilling in a second phase after results start to roll in. With CoreSearch’s man-portable diamond drill now drilling, we’re hitting the ground running. This initial phase will give us valuable subsurface data to guide our broader drilling campaign. The campaign isn’t just a technical achievement. Cultural integration has played a central role, with local elders blessing the site through traditional ceremonies. More than 40 members of the local community were also engaged in hand-clearing tracks to the drill pad. Estrella has reinforced the tracks with machinery to ensure long-term access and erosion control. Follow-up drill sites have already been prepped 100m from the first line. The project sits within Estrella’s northernmost Lautem project area and includes multiple drill targets across the Ira Miri, Sica and Lalena prospects. The initial drilling program will zero in on the manganese-rich zones mapped at Ira Miri. Estrella has also set its sights on the region’s broader mineral potential, including a large limestone deposit lying above the manganese horizon. Two weeks ago, Estrella unveiled a landmark deal that could see up to 500 million tonnes of premium limestone shipped from Timor-Leste over the next five years, targeting South East Asia’s surging industrial minerals demand. The high-grade, coral-rich limestone sits atop the Baucau Formation within Estrella’s 195-square-kilometre concession and directly overlies its manganese targets. This makes exploration doubly efficient as both resources can be assessed in tandem during drilling. Recent assays have proved the limestone is a high-purity calcite with few impurities, meaning it could be perfect for use in cement, glass production, agriculture and as a key neutralising agent in nickel processing and environmental remediation. Since drilling at Ira Miri will offer Estrella a first glimpse beneath the surface of Timor-Leste’s largely untouched terrain, Estrella plans to release early manganese assays in June at the International Manganese Institute’s conference in Tokyo. The company and its government-backed JV partner see the event as a fantastic opportunity to spotlight Timor-Leste’s emerging role in the global critical minerals sector. Operations have been fast-tracked under a special approval from the Timorese mining regulator and broader environmental clearances are pending. As the bit bites into fresh Timorese geology, Estrella is officially a first mover to unlock the nation’s untapped mineral wealth. With drills spinning, support entrenched and geology onside, the company’s Timor-Leste push could soon evolve into a game-changing discovery story. 4. Toyota global output, sales rise for the fourth straight month in April Toyota global output, sales rise for the fourth straight month in April TOKYO (Reuters) -Toyota said on Thursday its worldwide output and sales rose for a fourth consecutive month in April on strong demand for hybrid vehicles and rush buying in the United States over U.S. President Donald Trump‘s import tariffs. The world’s biggest automaker’s global sales for April increased 10% year-on-year to 876,864 vehicles, with U.S. sales climbing just as much, fuelled by strong demand, including rush-buying over the tariffs, according to Toyota. Hybrid vehicle sales made up about 44% of Toyota’s total worldwide sales for the first four months of the year. In April, the Japanese company’s global vehicle production rose 8% year-on-year to 814,787 vehicles, lifted by higher production in Japan and markets in North America, South America and China. 5. Germany’s Renk looks to auto sector for new talent as it scales up Germany’s Renk looks to auto sector for new talent as it scales up A Leopard 2 tank gear transmission in a production hall at the Renk AG plant in Augsburg, Germany, on Monday, May 8, 2023. Bloomberg | Bloomberg | Getty Images Tank parts maker Renk is eyeing up talent from the auto sector as it races to scale up and fuel growth in the wake of rising geopolitical tensions and soaring military spending. Earlier this year Germany passed a historic fiscal package that enabled a steep increase in the defense spending capabilities of Europe’s largest economy. The 27-member state bloc is scaling up its defense efforts amid the war in Ukraine and the increasingly strained transatlantic security partnership. Renk, a global leader in creating gear boxes for tanks, is among the defense firms that has seen its stock rally on the back of increased military spending. Its share price rose over 300% so far this year and its order book jumped 164% to 549 million euros ($622.3 million) in the first quarter. To keep pace with the soaring demand, defense companies like Renk, Hensoldt, Rheinmetall are increasingly collaborating with the automotive industry. It’s a sector which historically has been one of Germany’s most important economic pillars, but has been facing major difficulties due to the country’s sluggish economy, increased competition from China and U.S. tariffs. For Renk, this cross-industry collaboration has mainly consisted of hiring workers from the automotive industry, capitalizing on CEO Alexander Sagel and Chief Operating Officer Emmerich Schiller’s previous experience working in this sector. Sagel has previously held positions at Rheinmetall and Daimler, which has since been renamed to Mercedes-Benz Group AG, while Schiller has worked in various management roles at Mercedes-AMG GmbH. In an exclusive interview from Renk’s headquarters in Augsburg, Germany, CEO Sagel told CNBC’s Annette Weisbach that the tank-parts supplier has seen a range of applicants from the automotive industry and is “of course” benefitting from incorporating such experts. Schiller confirmed the trend, adding, “We are looking really for engineers who have that education, who can adapt to our industry and bring in the methods which we have in automotive like continuous improvement, like lineback principles to increase efficiency — to increase quality, this is what we are really looking for.” Opportunity to ‘kill two birds with one stone’ A branch of Germany’s largest trade union, IG Metall Lower Saxony, told CNBC it has seen cases of defense firms targeting skilled workers and collaborative opportunities with ******* carmakers and manufacturers. “These developments are taking place against the backdrop of two parallel dynamics: The automotive industry is undergoing a profound transformation process – key words [are]: electrification, digitalization, new mobility concepts – while at the same time the defense-related sector is expanding due to political decisions and increased defense budgets,” a spokesperson from IG Metall Lower Saxony said, in emailed comments translated by CNBC. While there are technological connections between the two industries and job creation is welcome, IG Metall warns of a “one-sided industrial policy focus towards rearmament,” which may provide employment in the short term but is based on an unstable security environment. “Our goal has to be a lasting peace, not continuous rearmament,” the spokesperson said. In a Deutsche Bank note from March, analysts led by Adrian Cox explained that overcapacity is an issue across Europe’s auto industry, particularly in Germany, where they estimate 100,000 jobs are now be at risk. Auto factories are lying idle while the defense sector remains “subscale,” the analysts said, adding that experienced auto workers can benefit the defense industry as it “moves to serial production and greater profitability.” There is “a historic opportunity to kill two birds with one stone by turning some of [Germany’s] automaking prowess to military production,” the analysts commented. “The ******* automotive industry is now increasingly talking to adjacent sectors,” a spokesperson from the ******* Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA) told CNBC. “In contrast to industry, Germany is no longer internationally competitive as a business location,” they said, adding that they “welcome anything that upgrades Germany as a production location in order to maintain and create growth, prosperity and jobs in Germany.” When asked about the shifts from automotives to defense, Monika Schnitzer, the chair of the ******* Council of Economic Experts, told CNBC’s Squawk Box Europe on Tuesday that it’s a chance “we should seize.” Given the guarantee that auto industry layoffs will happen, these workers “will be needed somewhere else” and therefore it’ll be key “to ease this transition by actually bringing people from one company to another company where they are needed” and also foster reskilling, she added. 7. French Open 2025: Organisers criticised for night session scheduling imbalance French Open 2025: Organisers criticised for night session scheduling imbalance When Britain’s Jack Draper faces Gael Monfils at the French Open on Thursday, it will once again highlight an eye-opening statistic. It’s one that raises the question of whether the clay-court Grand Slam should do more to promote the women’s game. Not since 2023 has a women’s singles match occupied the ********** night session slot on Court Philippe Chatrier – a run stretching to 19 successive matches. In fact, since the tournament introduced night sessions in 2021, only four matches have been from the women’s draw. It is a striking imbalance that hits the headlines year after year, and one which former world number two Ons Jabeur believes affects women’s sport as a whole. “It’s unfortunate for women’s sports in general. Not for tennis, but in general,” said three-time Grand Slam finalist Jabeur following her first-round exit on Tuesday. “I hope whoever is making the decision, I don’t think they have daughters, because I don’t think they want to treat their daughters like this. “It’s a bit ironic. They don’t show women’s sport, they don’t show women’s tennis, and then they ask the question, yeah, but mostly they [viewers] watch men. Of course they watch men more because you show men more. Everything goes together.” The last women’s singles match to be played in the evening at Roland Garros was Aryna Sabalenka’s fourth-round win over Sloane Stephens two years ago. When asked for a comment in response to Jabeur’s comments, the French Tennis Federation (FFT) did not provide one. Instead it said tournament director Amelie Mauresmo would “talk about this topic shortly” with the former world number one expected to hold a news conference later this week. 9. Hanoi bans The Economist’s printed issue with Vietnam’s top leader on cover, say distributor sources Hanoi bans The Economist’s printed issue with Vietnam’s top leader on cover, say distributor sources (Reuters) -The Economist’s latest printed edition for Asia featuring Vietnam’s top leader To Lam on its cover has been banned in Vietnam, sources at two local media distributors told Reuters, in a new instance of censorship in the **********-run country. The May 24 issue, which is still available in the country in its electronic version, portrays Lam with two stars on his eyes on a red backdrop, in a reference to the country’s national flag, with the title: “The man with a plan for Vietnam”. The subheading on its main Vietnam story said: “A ********** Party hard man has to rescue Asia’s great success story”. Vietnam’s ministry of foreign affairs and the ministry in charge of public information did not reply to requests for comment on the reported banning. The Economist did not immediately reply to a request for comment outside *** business hours. Vietnam routinely prohibits books, movies and other cultural works and multiple media outlets are also banned. “We were given orders to tear off the cover and the article about him (Lam), making the magazine no longer sellable. Later, we were ordered not to sell it at all,” said an executive at distributor Ngay Moi, declining to be named because she was not allowed to speak to media. An employee at a second distributor, Global Book Corporation, said Vietnam’s ministry in charge of public information banned the distribution of that particular issue, without elaborating on the motivations. A third source at distributor Xunhasaba said it did not have that issue because it had not received enough orders. Vietnam, a Southeast Asian industrial hub, faces a pivotal moment as it seeks to consolidate a prolonged economic ***** amid U.S. tariff trade tensions that may undermine its export-oriented growth. The Economist’s article described Lam as an ambitious leader who emerged “from the security state” and who “must turn himself into a reformer” to adjust the country’s economic model and make it richer. Lam, 67, rose from the powerful ministry of public security, which he had led for years, to reach the top of Vietnam’s political hierarchy last year after a months-long power struggle, first becoming president and then head of the ********** party, the country’s top job. The Economist’s cover and articles were reposted thousands of times on social media by users in Vietnam with mixed reactions. “Vietnam is stepping confidently into a new era of growth —and the world is taking notice,” Yumi Thao Nguyen, a sales manager, said on LinkedIn with a link to The Economist. Le Thi Kim Ngoc, a self-described “Citizen of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam”, said on Facebook The Economist’s characterisation of Lam as a hard man “undermine the serious political and social developments currently taking place in Vietnam”. The country is ranked 173th out of 180 surveyed nations in the latest press freedom index published by Reporters Without Borders, a non-profit organisation. Authorities in the one-party nation often detain people for “anti-state” online comments and maintain a strict control on the press and social media. Last week Vietnam’s technology ministry ordered the ban of messaging app Telegram over alleged crimes committed by its users, noting in an internal document the platform hosted groups created by “opposition and reactionary subjects”. Multiple users of the app in the country cannot access it this week. Telegram did not reply to a request for comment about the enforcement of the ban. It had earlier said it was “surprised” by the measure, noting it was responding to newly introduced requirements. Natalie Smith, who lives on the coast near Hythe, runs the Frugal Mum website and has written a top 15 of places to visit in the county. Her list of budget-friendly days out include locations that are either completely free or good value for money. “You can spend a day and not spend any money,” she told BBC Radio Sussex. One of the places she recommends is Brockhill Country Park, Hythe. “The kids can really roam free,” she said. “It’s massive – even when it is the school holidays you can find a corner for yourself, there’s a stream, places for the kids to climb and roll down hills.” Mrs Smith also includes Kearsney Abbey Gardens in Dover on her list. “There’s a big lake, it’s very pretty, loads of open spaces; huge fields to kick a football around and have a picnic,” she said. A third place to enjoy in Kent, according to the Frugal Mum list, is the award-winning Mote Park in Maidstone. 16. Gen Z feels trapped between the pros and cons of gen AI Gen Z feels trapped between the pros and cons of gen AI Nine in 10 young Australians are using artificial intelligence tools in their everyday life, a study has found, but few are using the software to “cheat” at school and many are changing their career paths to avoid its impact. A gender gap is also emerging among generative AI users, with women more concerned about creative work being stolen to train tools while men are more confident in its use. Research firm The Insight Centre released its findings into young Australians’ use of generative AI tools based on a survey of 560 people aged between 14 and 27. The report comes as a growing number of Australians report using AI tools, and one week after tech giant Google used its developers’ conference to unveil more AI features. The report, From Gen Z to GenAI, surveyed young people studying at high school, university and TAFE and working in full-time jobs and as apprentices and interns. Ninety per cent of those surveyed used generative AI tools, with almost one in five using AI once a day and almost twice as many using it once a week. Reasons for using AI were mixed, with many asking it for personal advice or emotional support, and others using it to improve their communication. Amid concerns of the technology’s use in education, seven in 10 said they had not passed AI-generated work off as their own, and one in 10 said they would not do so again. One in 10 said they planned to use AI to plagiarise assignments in future. Young people’s opinions on AI showed they were aware of the risks and rewards, The Insight Centre associate director Dr Anna Denejkina said. The technology’s convenience, productivity gains, and access to information rated highest among its benefits, while concerns about cheating, misinformation and a lack of originality were its biggest downsides. “There is a clear tension between the opportunities Gen Zs see in AI and the significant concerns they hold about its impact on their future,” she said. “Gen Z remains deeply concerned about how gen AI could affect their job prospects, the creative industry and their online safety.” One in three people surveyed said the arrival of generative AI had made them reconsider their future study and careers. Male respondents were more likely to feel confident using AI (41 per cent) than their female counterparts (20 per cent), however, and women were more concerned about creative theft to train AI (73 per cent vs 59 per cent). “A concerning AI gender gap is forming,” Dr Denejkina said. “There is a risk that AI could deepen existing inequalities if we don’t take steps to ensure women are equipped with the skills and confidence to engage with these tools.” One male university student surveyed said he had used AI to teach him how to write computer code despite no coding background. But a young female data analyst said she had stopped using ChatGPT after becoming concerned about political deepfakes and the role it played in her personal life. “It was doing all the micro-decisions and that felt like it was rewiring my brain,” she said. The findings come as the federal government considers mandatory AI guardrails following a public consultation and a Senate inquiry in late 2024. The Jinan Times, which is owned by the government of the provincial capital of Jinan, reported on Wednesday that Qiancheng Holdings, which ran BYD stores, had fallen into difficulties, affecting more than 1,000 consumers who were still owed warranty coverage and after-sales services. The affected stores are spread across four cities, including Jinan and Weifang, the newspaper said, citing visits it had made. Car owners were organising rights protection groups to seek solutions, it added. The newspaper said Qiancheng, which once had an annual turnover of 3 billion yuan ($416.71 million) and employed 1,200 people, published a letter on April 17 blaming adjustments BYD had made to its dealer policy for putting its cash flow under tremendous pressure. Qiancheng did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Reuters on Thursday. Asked for comment, BYD referred Reuters to a Wednesday article by ******** media outlet Cover News that cited an unnamed BYD public relations representative as saying that it was Qiancheng’s rapid expansion, rather than its policy adjustments, that had led to its crisis. The representative added that BYD was providing support to Qiancheng. Qiancheng’s situation highlights the growing stress facing China’s auto market, the world’s largest, as intensifying competition puts pressure on suppliers, automakers and dealers. 19. Iannis Xenakis, the Greek Composer Who Revolutionized Music Iannis Xenakis, the Greek Composer Who Revolutionized Music Greek Composer Iannis Xenakis in Paris. Credit: Friends of Xenakis Organization/ CC-BY-SA-2.5 At once an engineer, architect, and mathematician, Xenakis had the multifaceted genius that Greek culture is so well-known for. He also lived through some of the most trying times in Greek history. Born in 1922 to wealthy Greek parents living in Romania, he came back to Greece at the age of ten to attend a boarding school on the island of Spetses. By the time Xenakis was eighteen and ready to pursue a more advanced education in architecture and engineering, Italy had invaded Greece at the outset of World War II. The invasion soon led to the Nazi occupation of Greece, which wrenched him from his scholarly pursuits and thrust him into the strife of life during wartime. The Nazi Occupation in Greece Greece was divided into three zones after it fell to the Germans in April of 1941. Of course, it was the Germans who ruled parts of Athens along with Thessaloniki, most of the island of Crete, and areas in the Aegean. However, it was the nation of Bulgaria that controlled the region of Thrace and eastern sections of Macedonia. Italy was the nation in charge of most of mainland Greece under occupation. Xenakis overcame violence Xenakis joined the Greek National Liberation Front during the years of Nazi occupation. The Front was a ********** organization resisting the occupation through protest as well as armed conflict. He struggled psychologically with the violence that was part of his role in the resistance. He also suffered an incredibly traumatizing injury when a British projectile exploded on him, leaving his left eye blind and his face greatly disfigured thereafter. Xenakis was able to finish his degree in 1947, but at that time, the Greek government sought to persecute former members of the National Liberation Front, and he was given a death sentence for his affiliation with communism. Xenakis then fled to Paris in order to escape his fate at the hands of Greece’s new government. Rise to prominence in Paris Xenakis’ training in civil engineering landed him his first job in Paris assisting the renowned architect Le Corbusier. He quickly proved himself to be a visionary in his own right, eventually becoming a lead project manager and even collaborator of Le Corbusier’s. Xenakis managed the entire construction of the 1958 Brussels World’s Fair Pavilion, known as the “Philips Pavilion,” adapted from Le Corbusier’s idea. The Philips Pavilion for the 1958 Brussels World Fair, designed by Le Corbusier and executed by Iannis Xenakis. Credit: Herbert Behrens/ CC-BY-SA-3.0 Xenakis, ever the polymath, studied music while working as an architect. He longed for the tutelage of a professional composer, but when he initially showed them his work he faced rejection and misunderstanding, one even claiming that his mathematical compositions were “not music.” Finally he approached renowned French composer Olivier Messiaen, who immediately recognized a flash of brilliance in Xenakis’ incorporation of mathematics into his compositions. He also associated this idiosyncratic strength with Xenakis’ Greekness: “[Y]ou have the good fortune of being Greek, of being an architect and having studied special mathematics. Take advantage of these things. Do them in your music.” Iannis Xenakis’ Hybrid Masterpieces The Greek composer studied intensely with Messiaen from 1951 to 1953 while maintaining his post at Le Corbusier’s architecture studio. As he mastered musical rhythm, he began to understand the precise balance between statistical mathematics and music composition. He produced his first work, Anastenaria (1953–54), a triptych, or three-part piece, inspired by the Northern Greek dance ritual of the same name. The third part of the piece, Metastaseis, is considered Xenakis’ breakthrough and the earliest example of the style he became known for. It stands so singularly that Xenakis decided to remove it from the triptych. Xenakis’ mathematical proficiency led him to developing computer programs, algorithms, and synthesizers to create unique sounds. The polymath also created a computer program called UPIC, which allowed users to draw musical waveforms on a tablet that the program would then translate into corresponding sounds. The Greek genius’s health severely diminished toward the end of the twentieth century. In 1999, just two years before his death, he was given the Polar Music Award. The distinction was bestowed on him, as the organizers stated, “for a long succession of forceful works, charged with sensitivity, commitment and passion, through which he has come to rank among the most central composers of our century in the realm of art music, exercising within its various fields an influence which cannot be readily overstated.” Xenakis passed away at the age of seventy-eight on February 4, 2001. 25. Apple May Unveil iOS 26 at WWDC 2025 Instead of iOS 19; Said to Adopt Year-Based Naming Strategy Apple May Unveil iOS 26 at WWDC 2025 Instead of iOS 19; Said to Adopt Year-Based Naming Strategy WWDC 2025 will kick off in June and has been rumoured to be a stage where Apple might unveil iOS 19, its latest OS update for the iPhone, along with more firmware iterations for its devices. However, a recent report indicates that iOS 19 may not arrive at all. While the company will indeed preview the upcoming iOS firmware, it is said to be not known as iOS 19 at all. The report suggests that Apple will be changing its naming convention (or nomenclature) strategy for iOS. Apple to Preview iOS 26 Instead of iOS 19 It has been known for some time that Apple could make some big changes this year when it comes to its operating systems. But while this was previously thought to be applicable to the core design or functionality, the change may begin from the nomenclature itself. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reports that the Cupertino-based tech giant could move away from an iteration-based strategy towards an year-based one when it comes to the naming of its OS updates. This potentially means OS updates will reportedly be known by the year it is introduced instead of a version number, the journalist said, citing anonymous sources familiar with the plans. Hence, iOS 19 is expected to be called iOS 26, iPadOS 19 will be iPadOS 26, macOS 16 could be macOS 26, and so on and so forth. The company is reported to use the upcoming year instead of the current one while naming its firmware versions. The following replacements of Apple’s updates are likely to be previewed at WWDC 2025: Platform Expected Name (Based on Past Trend) Hypothetical Future Name iPhone iOS 19 iOS 26 Mac macOS 16 macOS 26 iPad iPadOS 19 iPadOS 26 Apple Watch watchOS 12 watchOS 26 Apple TV tvOS 19 tvOS 26 Apple Vision Pro visionOS 3 visionOS 26 Notably, Apple’s OS updates are accompanied by different versions as they did not launch at the same time. Thus, iOS 18 is the latest update for the iPhone while macOS 15 ships with all Mac devices. Meanwhile, the recently introduced Apple Vision Pro runs on the visionOS 2 firmware. Thus, Apple is said to be making this change to bring “consistency to its branding” and to get rid of a naming approach that could be confusing to customers and developers alike. This change, along with all of the features, is expected to be previewed at the WWDC 2025 keynote which takes place on June 9.
