  5. Cheapest days and times to travel revealed in new Expedia report Cheapest days and times to travel revealed in new Expedia report The best days and times to travel have been revealed in a new report. Aussie travellers can save up to 20 per cent by booking airfares on Sundays, according to Expedia’s 2025 Air Hacks Report, while booking domestic flights at least six months in advance could bring in savings of up to 36 per cent compared to those who left it to the last two weeks before departure. Camera IconExpedia’s 2025 Air Hacks Report has revealed the best days and times to travel. NewsWire / Naomi Jellicoe Credit: News Corp Australia Booking international flights too far in advance could actually cost travellers more, with the report finding booking between two and three months ahead was the sweet spot for savings, compared to more than six months in advance. Departing on a Saturday appeared to be the way to go for domestic trips, with savings of up to 27 per cent compared to those who left on a Monday. This was despite a “myth” that it was more expensive to fly domestic on weekends, according to the Expedia data. Cancellations appeared to be the lowest in February and March, with just two and a half per cent of flights cancelled on average, while January had the highest cancellation rate at 9.4 per cent. However January was reported as the cheapest month for economy flights, while October was found to be the cheapest for premium tickets, despite the myth that summer travel was more expensive. Camera IconBooking domestic flights at least six months in advance could bring in savings of up to 36 per cent compared to those who left it to the last two weeks before departure. NewsWire / James Gourley Credit: News Corp Australia Expedia travel expert Sarah King said the report pulled insights from data from every airline across the world to arm Aussies with “the best chance of saving money and time”. “Not only are long-haul destinations becoming more accessible for Aussies, thanks to new flight routes out of Australia, we’re also seeing new aircraft and improved airport facilities in what should hopefully be an exciting year of travel for Aussies,” Ms King said. While it could also be easy to get caught up thinking airfares increased per year, the report found economy tickets were down by 10 per cent compared to 2023, with premium tickets down by three per cent. The most popular destinations for Aussies across the country was reported as Sydney, Adelaide, and Canberra, while popular international destinations included Bali, Bangkok and Los Angeles. 6. Forza Motorsport will add a “fan favourite” track in May Forza Motorsport will add a “fan favourite” track in May ApocalypseShadow213d ago The problem isn’t the graphics. The game just doesn’t do anything new which is why the game has been overlooked. No one talks about the game at all. Microsoft tried to one up with photogrammetry graphics but it failed to get a lot of attention. Just like Hell Blade 2 went for graphics but it’s no where near in gameplay like GOW. Sony raised their game to the next level where it counts. In the gameplay. The cars always looked great because Polyphony always had an attention to detail. Which are the most important things you are looking at on the road. But Sony added online competition to GT that has propelled them into the winners circle. Then, when Turn 10 went back to the drawing board to compete, they didn’t add online competition to counter GT. Instead, they went for more graphics. Sony one upped them again with not only a better controller to feel the road, but are also using VR for increased immersion. Taking GT to a higher level again. Then, added an AI opponent that rivals real game player actions with Sophi. No one talks about Microsoft’s controller for the game because nothing changed from the last controller. And Microsoft and Turn 10 didn’t at least add VR for PC like Flight Simulator. And for a company that is pushing AI, Microsoft hasn’t improved their AI for this game compared to GT and Sophi. This improvement will not help this game sell or add new subscribers to game pass. Time to go back to the drawing board. 7. Trump federal spending freeze sparks confusion, fury Trump federal spending freeze sparks confusion, fury The healthcare system for millions of low-income Americans and rafts of other programs were thrown into disarray Tuesday after President Donald Trump ordered a freeze on federal funding, a move opponents blasted as unconstitutional. It was Trump’s latest radical step since he took office a week ago, vowing to force the US government and its employees to back his right-wing political goals or face retribution. Potentially trillions of dollars in federal grants, loans and other aid were frozen by the White House order set to take effect Tuesday at 5:00 pm (2200 GMT), casting a shadow over everything from education to small businesses. Online portals used to access the Medicaid health insurance program for poor families and disabled individuals were quickly inaccessible. “This is a blatant attempt to rip away health insurance from millions of Americans overnight and will get people killed,” Oregon Senator Ron Wyden posted on X. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said the website would be fixed soon and that “no payments have been affected.” She defended the drastic move as part of Trump’s bid to make the government “good stewards of taxpayer dollars.” The freeze is not a “blanket” stop on spending, but a tool to check that “every penny that is going out the door is not conflicting with the executive orders and actions that this president has taken,” Leavitt said. She said the temporary pause would not impact individual Americans but would instead target programs to weed out anything “********.” She listed as examples racial equality and climate change programs that Trump has vowed to eradicate — and did not answer a question about whether Medicaid recipients would be cut off. The extraordinary measure follows a similar freeze on most US foreign aid. – Constitutional challenge – The order, signed by acting director of the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) Matthew Vaeth, did not make clear how such a pause on disbursements of funding will work or for how long. Several non-profit groups have filed suit in federal court seeking a temporary halt to the order until its legality is assessed. Federal spending included more than $3 trillion in financial assistance like grants and loans in fiscal year 2024 — all of which was approved by Congress. Democrats accused Trump of usurping Congress’ constitutionally mandated control over budget spending as part of a broader attempt to force the government to bend to his personal will. This has included firing independent government watchdogs and several career prosecutors who were involved in an official probe of his attempts to overthrow the 2020 election. The Trump administration says the funding stoppage is just a way to enforce compliance with the administration’s policies. This is “certainly within the confines of the law,” Leavitt said, citing the White House legal team, and claiming Trump “has the power to fire anyone” in the administration. – ‘Sweeping halt’ – Democratic Senator Patty Murray called the White House spending order “a brazen & ******** move.” “The law is the law — Trump must immediately reverse course, follow the requirements of the law, & ensure the nation’s spending laws are implemented as Congress intended,” she posted on X. Another Democratic senator, Richard Blumenthal, said the “********” order will create “havoc” in medical and research facilities, which receive major government funding. The White House memo stated that “federal agencies must temporarily pause all activities.” It stated that Social Security and Medicare benefits — used by retirees — were excluded from the pause. Areas that might be impacted, it said, include “financial assistance for foreign aid, nongovernmental organizations, DEI, woke gender ideology, and the green new deal” — references to racial equality and climate change programs that Trump has vowed to overturn. The Sierra Club, an environmental organization, said the freeze could jeopardize funding for everything from disaster relief to home heating subsidies, safe drinking water programs, and the National Suicide Prevention Hotline. “In issuing a sweeping halt to federal funding, grants and loans, Donald Trump has… immediately and significantly put Americans in danger,” Sierra Club executive director Ben Jealous. bys-sms/des Source link #Trump #federal #spending #freeze #sparks #confusion #fury Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content] For verified travel tips and real support, visit: [Hidden Content]

  9. Democrats Block Bill to Impose Sanctions on International Criminal Court Officials Democrats Block Bill to Impose Sanctions on International Criminal Court Officials A bill to impose sanctions on officials affiliated with the International Criminal Court stalled in the Senate on Tuesday after Democrats refused to back it, a setback for legislation that aims to rebuke the court for its top prosecutor’s decision to bring war crimes charges against top Israeli leaders for their military offensive against ****** in Gaza. The measure, a direct challenge to the tribunal’s existence, now faces an uncertain path in the Senate. The House passed the measure earlier this month with significant bipartisan support, with 45 Democrats joining all Republicans to support it. On Thursday, the 54-to-45 vote in the Senate left the measure short of the 60 votes needed to advance. All but a single Democrat, Senator John Fetterman of Pennsylvania, opposed doing so. There is significant bipartisan consternation in Washington with the tribunal’s decision in May to prosecute Israeli officials while simultaneously going after the leaders of ******, whose deadly attack on Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, started a bloody backlash in the Gaza Strip. But many Democrats argued that the legislation was far too broad, and could apply not only to a wide range of personnel at the court, but also to American companies working with it. “As much as I oppose the I.C.C.’s deep bias against Israel and as much as I want to see that institution drastically reformed and reshaped, the bill before us is poorly drafted and deeply problematic,” Senator Chuck Schumer, Democrat of New York and the ********* leader, said on the floor moments before the vote, urging his colleagues to unite in opposition. “It will have many unintended consequences that undermine its primary goal.” Members of both parties have argued that Karim Khan, the I.C.C.’s top prosecutor, overstepped the court’s jurisdiction when he brought the charges against Israel and inappropriately likened the actions of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, a close U.S. ally, with those of Yahya Sinwar, the leader of the ****** terrorist group, accusing both of crimes against humanity. Senator Mazie K. Hirono, Democrat of Hawaii, said on Tuesday that Democrats had been negotiating with Republicans over possible ways to narrow the scope of the measure, but that those discussions had failed to yield an agreement by the afternoon vote. “I think the bill goes way too far in trying to sanction an entity that is supposed to be going after the kind of crimes we want them to go after,” Ms. Hirono said before the vote. The measure would compel the president to freeze assets and deny visas to any foreign national who contributed to the court’s efforts to “investigate, arrest, detain or prosecute a protected person,” including all current and former military and government officials of the United States and allies that have not consented to the court’s jurisdiction, such as Israel. “The court’s clear suggestion of moral equivalence between the government of Israel and the ****** terrorists who attacked Israel and oppress their own people is beyond the pale,” Senator John Thune, Republican of South Dakota and the majority leader, said on the floor before the vote. “Israel waged war against terrorists; ****** wages war against innocents. And the only reason Israel has been waging war against ****** is because ****** chose to launch a massive attack on innocent civilians that resulted in 1,200 deaths and the taking of approximately 250 hostages, more than 80 of whom are still in captivity today.” Following the vote Mr. Fetterman said that he was “deeply disappointed” that the bill failed to advance. In a social media post, he criticized the I.C.C., saying that it equated the “democratically elected leader of our special ally to the terrorists and rapists of ******.” Senators Ruben Gallego of Arizona and Elissa Slotkin of Michigan, both of whom supported the bill last year as members of the House, changed course and opposed it on Tuesday. It was a nearly unified show of force from Democrats at a time when they are having intense private discussions about how to operate as an effective ********* in the Trump era, including where they should work with Republicans and when to push back. Some had been quietly pushing for the I.C.C. bill to be opened to amendments so that they could carve out exemptions for U.S. allies and American companies working with the court, and support it. Others rejected the measure entirely. “These sanctions will make it almost impossible for the United States to engage the court on other issues and our national interest,” Senator Jeanne Shaheen, Democrat of New Hampshire and the top Democrat on the Foreign Relations Committee, said. She noted that the measure could affect civil servants and their families, lower-level workers and even potentially catering and sanitation employees. The bill sanctioning the I.C.C. was pushed through the House by Republicans during the last Congress but died in the Senate, then under Democratic control, when Democrats declined to bring it up. Republicans had hoped that now, with control of both chambers and Mr. Trump in the White House, the measure would be on a smooth road to enactment. 10. Ubisoft Layoffs: What It Means for Star Wars: Outlaws and Its Future Ubisoft Layoffs: What It Means for Star Wars: Outlaws and Its Future staticall6h ago @rlow1 > Xbox brand is now unhinged from the console And that’s not a good thing, IMO. How much money they wasted now on Xbox brand, marketing it and making consoles? That a lot of waste now. > Why buy a console in the first place? You know, that’s a good question. To me, console games (i mean exclusives here) are the reason to buy the console; to me, they used to be associated with: – Games that take full advantage of the hardware (only one console, much easier to do some cool stuff, like MGS 1 and save reading); – High quality, no (or almost no) bugs, everything is buttery smooth; – Everything can be played offline and online is just a cherry on top; – Every game comes out complete (meaning, no early access type of deal, when devs can abandon the game later on). Consoles gave us a ton of great games and very popular franchises. Probably most the best games i’ve ever played (MGS, Drakengard 3, ******’s Souls, Shadow of the Colossus, 3D Dot Game Heroes, both GoW – Gears of War and God of War, etc) are console exclusives. That’s the main reason i’m buying a console. Don’t have to install anything, just hook up, pop a disc and play. Many are used to this simplicity as well. Thinking about this now, most of what i used to like/expect are going away slowly, which is kind of sad. I don’t like the direction we’re heading, that’s all probably. As for the consoles themselves, you have to keep in mind that: Consoles are pushing technology forward, like Bluray and making stuff like SSD and liquid cooling more popular, increasing adoption rate They spend a lot of time and money on R&D, build factories to manufacture them and employ a ton of people to work on them; that might go to waste Nowadays, consoles are tied to their online services, without consoles those will also go to waste to be forced upon people, making you «install Steam to install Xbox/PS/other launcher, connect online, to launch the game», aka, making experience worse. If they’re going away, that might send a bad ripple across the whole industry. I might be melodramatic, i do understand that. Fans got a quick glimpse of the great ape in the Switch 2 demo reel with (what appears to be) Mario Kart 9, but it seems the new look for DK isn’t just for the game, but in merchandise as well. It’s not the first time Donkey Kong has been given a facelift since his original design in 1981, which was more like King Kong, and then completely overhauled with Rare’s Donkey Kong Country franchise. DK’s superfans on Reddit weighed in on the design with some not sure, while others were in favor of the new look. “At first I was against the design change, however after looking at it more I agree that it better allows DK to convey facial expressions and emotion. Before DK just kinda always looked angry? The brow reduction allows a greater range of expression and honestly looks pretty good once you get over the initial surprise of the change,” one user said. 13. Biased AI rejected my job applications, says ex-MP David TC Davies Biased AI rejected my job applications, says ex-MP David TC Davies A former cabinet minister who lost his seat at the general election claims he has been automatically rejected for jobs by Artificial Intelligence (AI) software because he does not have a degree. David TC Davies, who was Welsh secretary in Rishi Sunak’s Conservative government, has called on employers to rethink the role of AI when recruiting. Many companies routinely use applicant tracking systems to sift and grade CVs, despite concerns they could be filtering out the best candidates. The government has produced guidelines on the use of AI in recruitment, which warns companies: “At all stages there is a risk of unfair bias or discrimination against applicants.” Davies left school at 16 and worked in his family’s haulage business before being elected to what was then the National Assembly for Wales in 1999 and later serving 19 years as MP for Monmouth. Finding himself out of work after the general election, he said he applied for several degree-level jobs outside politics only to be rejected instantly. He believes his failure was down to a lack of qualifications that would be acceptable to an automated CV reader. He told the BBC: “Clearly when you submit a CV nobody human looks at them at all – and if you have a slightly odd CV, which I have, then you have no chance.” Even when he did make progress, he faced an unusual challenge when one multinational organisation asked for details of his last boss. He wrote on LinkedIn: “In one case I got a little further and received a form with the following questions: “Name of last line manager?’ I answered: ‘Rishi Sunak’. “Job title of last line manager?’ I put: ‘Prime Minister of the United Kingdom’. “‘Telephone number of line manager?’ I have Rishi’s number but certainly wasn’t going to put it in the box. Result? Rejection!” He joked that the former PM might not have given him a good reference if he had shared his phone number. Davies was one of 175 Tory MPs to lose their seat last year. They were entitled to a loss of office payment if they lost their seat and had been an MP for at least two years – as well as advice on how to look for jobs and write CVs. He is not the only one who initially struggled to find work. The Telegraph reported that another ex-Conservative MP had earned just £575 since the election. Davies said employers may be missing out on diverse talent by using applicant tracking systems which scan CVs and filter out unqualified candidates. One response to his CV suggested he could be suitable for an entry level public affairs job at a low level. “This is not a whinge, it’s not about me, it’s more for other people,” Davies said. “Not everybody has got a conventional CV which sees you working up the management ladder.” Davies said the skills needed to drive lorries across Europe for his family business before the days of smartphones and satnavs “required a PhD in common sense” – qualities that were wasted on applicant tracking systems. The ex-minister, who is now working as chief of staff for the Welsh Conservatives in the Welsh Parliament, the Senedd, said the use of AI recruitment software could not be good for companies. “They’re going to recruit all the same sort of people – they’re going to end up with template people,” he added. Consumers in the U.S. and China, its two largest markets, have been visiting its cafes less frequently and often opting to get their caffeine fix elsewhere. In September, former Chipotle CEO Brian Niccol joined the company as its latest chief executive. On the company’s last earnings call, Niccol shared some early steps he is taking to turn around the business and bring it “back to Starbucks.” The changes range from cosmetic tweaks such as bringing back the condiment bar to more intense revisions such as overhauling its menu and improving its speed of service per order to under four minutes. Analysts are not expecting Niccol to change the coffee chain overnight, but they are predicting that sales have improved slightly compared with the prior quarter. Wall Street is anticipating the company will report same-store sales declines of 5.5%, compared with last quarter’s declines of 7%, according to StreetAccount estimates. Now, Larian Studios has announced that the Patch 8 stress test is live, and it’s introducing several new features including cross-play. To familiarize players with the way cross-play will function, Larian has also released the following video that walks through the necessary steps to join up with friends who are playing on separate consoles or PC. Prior to launching Baldur’s Gate 3 on Xbox Series X, Larian was forced to drop the split-screen feature from Xbox Series S. After Patch 8, Series S users will finally get the split-screen option that Series X players have enjoyed since 2023. Photo Mode is another prominent addition in Patch 8, alongside the 12 new subclasses that players can select. Larian notes that there are some known bugs that are still being worked out, which is why the stress test is being used to identify these issues before the official Patch 8 rollout begins to every player. Once Larian wraps up its work on Patch 8, the studio’s full attention will go to its next project, codenamed Excalibur. Any potential sequel to Baldur’s Gate 3 will be developed by other studios. You can find the Patch 8 highlights below, but beware of some of the spoilers in there. Patch 8 Highlights Photo mode 12 new subclasses Cross-play Xbox Series S split screen Gameplay When you succeed a Perception check, the spotted item will now ping on the minimap and be listed in the combat log. Fixed an issue where the special abilities of some of your allies weren’t properly provided at the end of the dialogue with them at High Hall. Scrolls and potions inside unlocked containers in your party inventory can now be used when rolling in dialogues. Neutral and friendly NPCs will no longer become hostile when, outside of combat, they walk into surfaces created during combat that trigger passives (like electrified surfaces triggering Thunderbolt Strike). Take it easy, lads. Fixed Freecast being reset when any condition is applied. Fixed characters getting stuck when pathfinding via a ladder that’s already in use by another companion. Fixed a bug with the moving platform in the Gauntlet of Shar that would sometimes leave you behind, causing you to plummet to your death. Combat Fixed an issue causing neutral NPCs to trigger combat for seemingly no reason. Cerys will stop getting involved in combats with Minthara from across the region. An eager beaver no longer. Modding Fixed an issue causing you to get stuck at a 0% loading screen when attempting to join a multiplayer session that uses mods. The Mod Verification window will now trigger regardless of where the request to connect to a multiplayer game is coming from. Replaced the third-party mod warning with clearer messaging. Performance and Options Fixed the ruleset selector not appearing on the ‘Alter Custom Mode’ screen when accessing the ruleset settings via the multiplayer lobby. Improved server performance in the Adamantine Forge. Scripting and Flow Fixed an issue where you could tell Astarion that Gandrel has been looking for him even if Gandrel refused to tell you the name of his prey. Fixed a savegame issue where you wouldn’t get the appropriate amount of Umbral Gems for the Gauntlet of Shar. Minthara now comments on reveal. Reminded Minthara that ‘knocked out’ does not mean ‘dead’, so she’ll more reliably appear in Moonrise Towers. You can no longer teleport out of Moonrise while controlling Minthara unless you tell her to stay put. Minthara is now willing to talk to you after you tell her to wait in the torture chamber. Minthara no longer gets stuck babysitting Thaniel in Act II. Fixed an issue where you could talk about Art Cullagh as though he’s alive even if he isn’t. Your character will no longer think Shadowheart is dead if she isn’t when talking to Characters who were in a relationship with Gale when he will now receive a tonally appropriate (read: lovey-dovey) letter. Fixed a dialogue issue preventing Avatar Gale from talking about the orb to Lae’zel after consuming a magic item. UI Discovered and available (non-hostile, alive, etc.) traders are now shown on the world map regardless of how far away you are from them. Cinematics Shadowheart has agreed to stop repeatedly changing her hair colour during certain intimate moments. Tidied up and improved some cinematic animations for characters of different heights if you kiss during the evil ending. Writing Fixed a duplicated dialogue option and the wrong version of another dialogue option appearing in Minthara’s main party dialogue. 19. Leicester Square venue fears for its future Leicester Square venue fears for its future Prince Charles Cinema The Prince Charles opened as a theatre in 1962 before becoming a cinema later in the decade A West End cinema beloved by the directors behind the movies Pulp Fiction and Boogie Nights has launched a campaign to save it from closure. A petition supporting the Prince Charles Cinema was launched after the management said it believed its future was under threat, due to new terms being imposed by its landlord. It says the building’s owner wants to raise its rent and has demanded a new clause which, if triggered, could leave the cinema homeless with six months’ notice. Paul Thomas Anderson, the director of Boogie Nights, There Will Be Blood and Inherent Vice, has previously spoken up for the Leicester Square cinema, which he described as “like tuning into your favourite radio station”. Getty Images Paul Thomas Anderson says the cinema has a place in his heart In a petition that has received more than 50,000 signatories, the Prince Charles said it believed the landlord was seeking planning permission to redevelop the site. The online petition page quotes Mr Anderson: “The Prince Charles has a place in my heart. It’s the people, the programming, the accessibility, feeling, texture… you cannot go wrong. “You also know that on any given day, you can close your eyes, press your finger to the programme, and you’ll hit something great.” Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs director Quentin Tarantino has previously described the cinema as “everything an independent movie theatre should be”, adding that “for lovers of quality films, this is Mecca”. The venue, one of the last remaining independent cinemas in central London, has accused the landlord, Zedwell LSQ, of trying to “bully” the business out of the building. Criterion Capital, Zedwell LSQ’s parent company, said the terms of a new lease were standard practice and not unreasonable. Getty Images The cinema is known for its unique programming and all-night film marathons Criterion, which is owned by billionaire developer Asif Aziz, has a number of hotels and other properties in the West End. The company has continually rejected requests for negotiation, the cinema said. A spokesperson for the venue said: “We are one of the last remaining independent cinemas in central London, receiving no public funding and attracting over 250,000 customers a year at a time when the industry is struggling. “Losing the Prince Charles Cinema would mean losing not just an iconic cultural institution, but also an engine for the economy of the West End… This would have repercussions way beyond the building itself.” Criterion Capital said: “A break clause is standard commercial practice, reflecting long-term property planning, not unreasonable intent.” It added that its rental expectations were based on a fair market assessment and that it remained “open to constructive dialogue” with the cinema’s operator Bubble Chamber Ltd. 21. Big interest income in 2024 leads to hefty taxes in April. Prepare now Big interest income in 2024 leads to hefty taxes in April. Prepare now Whether you socked away money in a high-yield savings account or saw a windfall from your Big Tech winners last year, you probably did well – and it’s almost time to pay the Tax Man. The Internal Revenue Service began accepting 2024’s income tax returns this week. April 15 marks the federal deadline for filers, unless they go on extension until October. Any sums owed to the IRS, however, must be paid by April 15, or else penalties may apply. While the Federal Reserve began dialing back interest rates last fall, investors spent much of 2024 enjoying attractive yields on a range of plain-vanilla savings products. Some banks were still offering annual percentage yields of more than 5% on 1-year CDs last summer . “In theory, they shouldn’t be surprised if they were earning interest income last year,” said Catherine Valega, certified financial planner at Green Bee Advisory. “People forget that they earned a decent amount of income – it’s this esoteric income that people forget about and then they have this shock,” she said. The shock is that the additional yield you were picking up on high-yield savings accounts, CDs and most money market funds held in taxable accounts is taxed as ordinary income, where the very top marginal rate is 37%. “You still earned decent income if you paid attention and put your money into CDs,” said Valega. Watch the mail and plan ahead Investors should watch the mail for tax forms disclosing the amount that they earned on their interest-bearing assets. Institutions that paid at least $10 of interest in the prior year are required to send along a Form 1099-INT . Perhaps you held some winning dividend payers in a brokerage account last year. Keep an eye out for Form 1099-DIV or a consolidated 1099 from your brokerage. Qualified dividends are subject to the friendlier long-term capital gains rate of 0%, 15% or 20%, depending on your federal tax bracket. “I know people are antsy to file their tax returns, but you have to wait until you get these documents in the mail,” said Tim Steffen, certified public accountant and director of advanced planning, private wealth management at Baird. “These documents – investment income – don’t start coming until at least mid-February and can stretch into mid-March,” he added. Indeed, some of the investors who may be waiting until March for all of their details include those who are in partnerships. Master limited partnerships themselves aren’t subject to federal income taxes, but the limited partners – that is, the investors – are on the hook for income distributed. That’s different from the treatment for C-corporations, which are subject to corporate taxes, and whose investors pay taxes on dividends received. Partnerships can offer hefty yields exceeding 6% because of their preferential tax treatment, but investors must receive a Schedule K-1 from the partnership to file their taxes. “Most of those are issued in March, but it’s very possible that you can get one that comes later than that,” said Steffen. If you file before you get the K-1, you’ll have to amend your return – which comes with added cost and complexity. Avoid hiccups As you gather documents to prepare your taxes, take stock of where you’re holding your income-generating assets. For starters, limited partnership interests held in an individual retirement account can result in a tax liability that’s known as “unrelated business taxable income.” That means the retirement account itself will need to file a return. On a simpler note, when your brokerage reports your capital gains to you, check your basis and make sure it’s correct – particularly if you had been reinvesting in the asset over time. “The brokerages are pretty good about tracking that, but if you do it on your own, you might not catch it,” said Steffen. You should also make note of state tax issues that may arise, as certain assets are subject to different treatment under state and federal laws. For instance, interest income from Treasury securities is exempt from state and local income taxes, but is still subject to federal levies. “Some things are taxable for federal but not state, and vice versa,” said Steffen. “Be sure you’re not missing out on that.” Source link #Big #interest #income #leads #hefty #taxes #April #Prepare Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  22. Israel launches airstrikes on south Lebanon’s Nabatieh Israel launches airstrikes on south Lebanon’s Nabatieh Israeli airstrikes in Nabatieh, a major town in southern Lebanon, have injured 24 people, the Lebanese health ministry says. The Israeli military said in a statement on Tuesday it had attacked Hezbollah vehicles that were transporting weapons on the edge of Nabatieh. Lebanese caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati strongly condemned the two strikes on Nabatieh and described them as a violation of the ceasefire arrangement with Israel. Mikati spoke with US General Jasper Jeffers, who chairs the committee monitoring the ceasefire, in a phone call on Tuesday, Mikati’s office said in a statement. The Lebanese leader urged firm pressure on Israel to guarantee it implements the ceasefire according to international law, the statement said. Lebanon’s Iran-backed Hezbollah group and Israel agreed on a ceasefire in late November, ending a conflict across the Israeli-Lebanese border that has killed thousands of people since it was ignited by the Gaza war in 2023. The US on Sunday said the agreement between Lebanon and Israel, which included an initial 60-day ******* for the withdrawal of Israeli troops, would remain in effect until February 18, an extension to the January 26 deadline previously agreed. Hezbollah chief Naim Qassem said on Monday that the group would not accept any justifications to extend the ******* for Israeli troops’ withdrawal from southern Lebanon. Israeli forces killed at least 24 people and wounded at least 141 in southern Lebanon on Sunday and Monday, the Lebanese health ministry said, as thousands of people tried to return to their homes in the area in defiance of Israeli military orders. Meanwhile in Washington, legislation that would have imposed sanctions on the International Criminal Court in protest of its arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former defence minister were blocked in the US Senate on Tuesday. The chamber voted 54-45 in favour of the bill, meaning the measure, which had already passed the Republican-majority House of Representatives, could not get the 60 “yes” votes needed in the 100-member Senate to advance. The vote was largely along party lines, with almost every Democrat and independent voting against. Senator John Fetterman was the only Democrat to vote with Republicans to advance the measure. Democratic Senator Jon Ossoff did not vote. The “Illegitimate Court Counteraction Act” would have imposed sanctions on any foreigner who investigates, arrests, detains or prosecutes US citizens or those of an allied country, including Israel, who are not members of the court. It passed the House earlier this month 243-140, as 45 Democrats joined Republicans in voting “yes.” In the Senate, Democrats said they agreed with much of the bill, but said it was too broad, and risked alienating important US allies and imposing sanctions on lower level workers at the court in the Netherlands. Urging colleagues to vote “no,” Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer accused the ICC of having “an anti-Israel bias that cannot be ignored.” However, he said the bill was poorly crafted and also could target US companies, such as those whose products help protect the court from foreign hackers. 24. Democratic states plan to sue over Trump’s federal grant funding freeze Democratic states plan to sue over Trump’s federal grant funding freeze Two dozen Democratic attorneys general said Tuesday afternoon they are suing to stop the White House from instituting a pause to trillions of dollars in federal grant, loan and other aid funding. A Monday night White House budget office memo called for the spending freeze on federal assistance to begin by 5 p.m. Tuesday, potentially affecting a vast range of programs, from aid to nonprofits and universities to small business loans and state and local government grants. The memo claims some $3 trillion was spent in 2024 on federal assistance programs. New York, California, Illinois, Massachusetts, New Jersey and Rhode Island said Tuesday they planned to sue, and were soon joined by the attorneys general of Arizona, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, New Mexico, North Carolina, Oregon, Vermont, Washington, Wisconsin and the District of Columbia. “What a ham-handed way to run a government. It is astonishing,” said Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Naronha, adding that the memo was “written in such a way that it was barely understandable.” California Attorney General Rob Bonta, joining the virtual press conference from the passenger seat of a car, said the memorandum was ambiguous in its wording, “by design.” The Monday night directive from the Office of Management and Budget said its goal was to advance White House priorities, including “to advance a stronger and safer America, eliminating the financial burden of inflation for citizens, unleashing American energy and manufacturing, ending ‘wokeness’ and the weaponization of government, promoting efficiency in government, and making America healthy again.” The memo directs federal agencies to assess compliance with President Trump’s executive orders — specifically targeting “DEI, woke gender ideology and the Green New Deal.” It does not spell out what exactly these policies refer to, or what programs will be affected. New York Attorney General Letitia James, whose office last year won an approximately $500 millionjudgement against President Trump and his company, called the move unconstitutional. “This president has exceeded his authority, he has trampled the constitution, and undermined a coequal branch of government,” said James. She and other attorneys general said the directive is an attempt to shorten Congress’ purse strings. New Jersey Attorney General Matt Platkin echoed the accusation that the president is undermining Congress. “He does not get to wake up in the morning or after an afternoon nap and direct his entire government to stop funding critical services that Congress have duly authorized and appropriated,” Platkin said. The order is likely to spark an onslaught of litigation, and even before states took action on Tuesday, a coalition that includes the National Council of Nonprofits and the American Public Health Association asked a federal judge for an emergency order to block the memo from taking affect.
