  3. Essex Police plans to make PCSOs redundant to save money Essex Police plans to make PCSOs redundant to save money George King BBC News, Essex Essex Police All Essex Police officers could see their pay reduced under the proposals Essex Police has revealed plans to make all 99 of its PCSOs redundant in an effort to balance its budget. The force – and its police, fire and crime commissioner – also proposed cutting 65 other staff roles and reducing the pay of all other officers. Essex Police said it had been given “inadequate” funding from government and was faced with a budget shortfall of £5.3m. The Home Office said forces across England had been provided with the resources they needed to “keep communities safe”. “We cannot ignore the fact the government settlement is not enough to meet pay and inflationary pressures,” said police, fire and crime commissioner Roger Hirst. “We have to balance the need to respond to local policing and crime priorities with the wider financial pressures on the service and on households.” He said the proposals were subject to a consultation. Richard Smith/BBC The Conservative police, fire and crime commissioner for Essex, Roger Hirst, said he did not want residents to bear the brunt of the budget shortfall PCSOs, or police community support officers, are paid employees but only share some of the powers that police officers have. They can hand out fixed-penalty notices and take alcohol from a person under the age of 18, but must ask a police officer to arrest someone. Essex Police employs about 3,755 officers and Chief Constable Ben-Julian Harrington warned in December that he may be forced to cut 200 roles. He said at the time the force had “squeezed the lemon pretty dry”. Under the proposals announced on Tuesday, the force said all “non-critical building and technology projects” would be stopped. The southeast allowance and detective allowance would be removed, which would mean every officer would face a pay reduction. Hirst has also proposed increasing its council tax precept – which would mean a 5.66% rise for Band D properties, equivalent to 27p per week. The force said even after this increase and after identifying £8m in “efficiency savings” it still meant there was a £5.3m shortfall for the 2025-26 financial year. Stuart Woodward/BBC Chief Constable Ben-Julian Harrington said in December the force had “squeezed the lemon pretty dry” Hirst and Mr Harrington said they had been in conversation with the Home Office in a bid to secure a “fairer” funding deal, but to no avail. “I’ve said repeatedly for the last few months that all I want is fair funding for a force that is already efficient,” added Mr Harrington. “Our plans do, regrettably, impact our entire workforce in some way and whilst those plans are unpalatable on every level, I have tried my best to be fair to all. “We all want more officers on our streets but these things can’t happen without the appropriate funding and sadly there is just not enough money in the pot.” A Home Office spokesperson said: “We are ensuring we deliver on our safer streets mission, with an extra 13,000 neighbourhood police officers, community support officers and special constables, all of whom will play a vital role in bringing visible policing to our streets.” They pointed out that Essex Police’s funding for 2025-26 was £431.1m, which was £24.9m more than in 2024-25. Tourist trampled to death by elephant in South Africa while trying to save kids – National Tourist trampled to death by elephant in South Africa while trying to save kids – National Descrease article font size Increase article font size A tourist was trampled to death by an elephant on Saturday in South Africa’s famous Kruger National Park, the South African national parks agency (SANParks) has confirmed. “Today a tragic accident occurred when a tourist was charged and trampled by an elephant near Crocodile River at Malelane Gate. This, regrettably, resulted in loss of life,” the organization shared in a statement Saturday, shortly after the incident occurred. A follow-up statement, shared Monday, identified the victim as 59-year-old South African Shaik Adam Shabir Ammed. “Initial eyewitness accounts indicate that the family parked close to the Malelane reception area and children ran past the bridge into the bush whereupon an individual elephant from a nearby herd charged them. The deceased rushed to assist the children and that is when he was chased and trampled by one of the animals,” the agency said. SANParks added that the elephant responsible for the death could not be identified from a larger herd that was present at the time of the trampling. “[The elephants] immediately moved away while people were trying to save the life of deceased,” they wrote, asking people not to post images of the incident on social media. Kruger is the largest game park in South Africa, and has strict rules forbidding visitors to leave their vehicles, save for a few picnic areas and fenced campsites. SANParks said they continue to investigate the death, and asked that the public refrain from speculating about what happened until the police release their final report. 6. Assassin’s Creed Shadows censored in Japan Assassin’s Creed Shadows censored in Japan Japan’s Computer Entertainment Rating Organization (AKA CERO) has slapped Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed Shadows with a Z rating, which is basically the ESRB’s AO. Of course, Ubisoft still wants to sell the game in Japan, so it’s playing ball and dashing the content CERO demands be dashed. Preemptively, the Japanese Ubisoft account took to Twitter (via Eurogamer) to address any differences between versions. “Regarding differences in content between the overseas (North America, Europe) and Japanese versions of Assassin’s Creed: Shadows, the version sold in Japan of Assassin’s Creed: Shadows (CERO: Z) will have some differences in in-game content in order to comply with the regulations of the certification organization.” So, what is CERO bothered by? Assassin’s Creed Shadows will allow a more intense level of violence, including decapitation. The trouble is things are kinda murky when it comes to actually remaining consistent. Stellar Blade, for example, caught flack as it remained uncensored despite severed limbs; something Dead Space Remake wasn’t able to get away with. 9. Can You Make Real Money in the Golden Age of Memecoins? Can You Make Real Money in the Golden Age of Memecoins? According to Coingecko, memecoins now make up $102 billion market cap out of the total cryptocurrency market cap of $3.62 trillion. Most of the memecoins are still heavily dog-theme concentrated headed by (DOGE) and (SHIB). However, the newly minted (TRUMP) coin shows a new trend emerging since its launch on January 18th. Alongside seven other memecoins above $1 billion market cap, DOGE, SHIB and TRUMP are now the top three picks among 1,362 digital assets in this highly speculative meme category. The fact that TRUMP reached a value of $15 billion a day after launch, only to deflate to current $5.9 billion, speaks to the demand for tokenization of everything. It also speaks to the relief that SEC Chair Gary Gensler, widely viewed as oppressive and underhanded, is finally out of office. But when it comes down to it, can memecoin trading be worth the risk? Let’s examine the cons and pros. Memecoin Nature: Volatility on Steroids has often received complaints that it cannot serve as a medium of exchange because it is too volatile. At the same time, investors have been drawn to Bitcoin precisely because its volatility offers a maneuvering space for profit-taking. But now that Bitcoin is heavy, at a $2.1 trillion market cap, it is much harder to move that weight, making it less volatile. Memecoins picked the volatility slack and then some. Unlike Bitcoin, which aims to solve the problem of sound money through its computing network to ensure inviolability and scarcity, memecoins lack substance. In that aspect, memecoins are best compared to penny stocks, which represent unproven companies. Like penny stocks, memecoins also typically have high volatility, driven by short-term speculation and low liquidity. But unlike penny stocks, memecoins are entirely driven by “vibes”. It is then a matter of gauging if vibes have traction. Case in point, since Elon Musk took the Dogecoin mantle, there were many times when his tweets lacked the spark to drive DOGE price up. Similarly, the new TRUMP coin is now effectively a gauge on the President’s acts in office, whether they are popular or not. That is, after the initial price spike of TRUMP coin, which is typical of all memecoin launches as people try to latch on the vibes potential. But in worst case scenarios, many memecoins are simply tokenized rug pulls, as exemplified by (HAWK) coin. In these scenarios, insiders/issuers in control of the token’s supply can drain the liquidity at will, leaving traders with worthless coins. This is why memecoin trading should be viewed as tokenized gambling, with the house (token supply controllers) being the most likely winners. But, is there a way to offset memecoins’ volatility and make it lucrative? Memecoin Trading: Signs to Look For Did you ever encounter an image that you liked on social media, as it stated some repeatable, concise, seemingly profound message? Add a blockchain code to it and you get a memecoin in a nutshell. People then trade the tokenized meme based on its virality potential. If the virality is there, then the memecoin is considered to have staying power – making it less likely to hold a deflated coin never to go back up. Resulting from this, it is often recommended to buy memecoins that have strong community and wide appeal. However, this should be taken with a boulder of salt. Let’s examine why in the case of Huawk Tuah coin: It was derived from the virality of Haliey Welch’s humorous remark from a TikTok video, building up wide appeal. Haliey’s personality was perceived as likeable, down-to-earth and relatable, which was another key ingredient for virality. Consequently, the liquidity pool was there for the taking, ready to be tokenized. The problem is, Haliey’s subsequent launch into the public was carefully engineered, from her public appearances to her podcast. In other words, she was astroturfed. This is an important distinction to make as organic growth is more likely to have staying power. In the case of Haliey Welch’s memecoin, HAWK tokenholders conflated strong community with astroturfed social media engagement, built from the initial organic wide appeal. As a result, many served as exit liquidity. HAWK represents a typical memecoin life cycle – FOMO-driven price balloon, soon to be popped into oblivion. Image credit: CoinMarketCap Therefore, when trading memecoins, it is preferable if one cannot pin them down to specific personas. After all, it is then all too easy for them, or those around them, to exploit the attention. At the same time, this doesn’t apply to the TRUMP coin because President Trump is not just any persona. He has the weight of the White House behind him, attached to all the expectations and speculations that come with such a lofty position of power. In contrast, memecoins serving generalized memes/sentiments, tend to have waves of bottoms and tops, which then serve as additional opportunities after the initial FOMO price spike. During its life cycle, SHIB had multiple repeats to recoup losses, or buy at a low price for later gains. Image credit: CoinMarketCap Nonetheless, memecoin investors should always conduct due diligence and see the memecoin’s tokenomics and supply unlocks. This verification is one of the key benefits of blockchain technology that should be leveraged. Blockchain explorers such as Etherscan, BscScan or Solscan make it easy to see the percentage weight of token holders, wallet activity and locked liquidity, which could all serve as rug pull indicators. Likewise, Token Sniffer from Solidus Labs is a valuable tool to check for such signs. The Bottom Line Priced in penny range, just like penny stocks, many memecoins represent the cheapest entry into the world of cryptocurrencies. They attract capital for the same reason the lottery attracts ticket buyers – the potential to turn tiny investment into a huge return. Therefore, memecoin exposure should be considered the same, as money lost. A more promising approach would be to invest in general-purpose smart contract platforms that launch tokens, such as (SOL), (ETH), (AVAX), (ADA) or (IMX) for blockchain gaming. These platforms have underlying backing, developer pools and roadmaps, making them far more substantial than ephemeral vibes. *** Neither the author, Tim Fries, nor this website, The Tokenist, provide financial advice. 10. Social Security Fairness Act beneficiaries may face lengthy wait Social Security Fairness Act beneficiaries may face lengthy wait More than 3.2 million people will see increased Social Security benefits, under a new law. However, individuals who are affected may have to wait more than a year before they see the extra money that’s due to them from the Social Security Fairness Act, the Social Security Administration said in an update on its website. “Though SSA is helping some affected beneficiaries now, under SSA’s current budget, SSA expects that it could take more than one year to adjust benefits and pay all retroactive benefits,” the agency states. The Social Security Fairness Act eliminates two provisions — known as the Windfall Elimination Provision and Government Pension Offset — that previously reduced Social Security benefits for certain beneficiaries who also had pension income provided from employment where they did not contribute Social Security payroll taxes. More from Personal Finance:New Social Security increases may trigger higher tax bills, Medicare premiumsWhy retirees may feel the 2025 Social Security COLA isn’t enoughNew Social Security benefit legislation worsens program’s funding woes Those provisions reduced benefits for certain workers including state teachers, firefighters and police officers; federal employees who are covered by the Civil Service Retirement System; and individuals who worked under a foreign social security system. The law affects benefits paid after December 2023. Consequently, affected beneficiaries will receive increases to their monthly benefit checks, as well as retroactive lump sum payments for benefits payable for January 2024 and after. The benefit increases “may vary greatly,” depending on an individual’s type of Social Security benefits and the amount of pension income they receive, according to the Social Security Administration. “Some people’s benefits will increase very little while others may be eligible for over $1,000 more each month,” the agency states. The Social Security Administration said it cannot yet provide an estimated timeline for when the benefit adjustments will happen. In the meantime, the agency is advising beneficiaries to update their mailing address and bank direct deposit information, if necessary. In addition, noncovered pension recipients may now want to apply for benefits, if they are newly eligible following the enacted changes. Chopper ****** that killed Leicester owner ‘accidental’ Chopper ****** that killed Leicester owner ‘accidental’ The deaths of five people in a helicopter ****** at the King Power Stadium in October 2018, including Leicester City football club owner Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha, were accidental, an inquest jury has concluded. Srivaddhanaprabha, a Thai tycoon, was killed along with four others when his helicopter crashed in the club’s car park and exploded after a Premier League match on October 27, 2018. The Leonardo AW169 helicopter had cleared the top of the stadium before starting to spin, and plummeted to the ground before bursting into flames. Along with Srivaddhanaprabha, the ****** also killed pilot Eric Swaffer, Izabela Lechowicz, Nusara Suknamai and Kaveporn Punparev. The inquest lasted two and a half weeks. Philip Shepherd, the Srivaddhanaprabha family’s legal representative, said Swaffer was a “highly competent and very experienced pilot who did everything in his power” to control the helicopter when the tail rotor failed shortly after take-off. Srivaddhanaprabha’s family are actively continuing their legal action against Italian defence company Leonardo, the manufacturer of the helicopter, and seeking compensation for loss of earnings and other damages, valued at 2.15 billion pounds ($A4.28 billion). It is the largest fatal accident claim in English legal history. Leonardo said this month that it would defend itself against the High Court claim. It expressed its “deepest sympathy” for the victims of the ******, saying their deaths were “an unquestionable tragedy”. 16. Alleged Drug Kingpin Caught After Wife’s European Vacation Photos Reveal His Location Alleged Drug Kingpin Caught After Wife’s European Vacation Photos Reveal His Location Suspected Central American drug kingpin Luis Manuel Picado Grijalba — a.k.a “Shock” — was arrested while on a lavish European vacation with his family—aided by an unlikely source: his wife’s social media. Grijalba, 43, had been on the radar of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) for months due to his alleged role in shipping ******** from Limón, Costa Rica, to the United States, New York Post reports. His arrest, however, was not the result of an undercover sting, but a string of Instagram posts that connected authorities to his *** whereabouts. His wife, Estefania McDonald Rodriguez, frequently documented their luxurious trip on social media, showing them beneath the Eiffel Tower in Paris, sunbathing on beaches, holding two parrots, and even seated before Rome’s famed Trevi Fountain. The 32-year-old’s now-deleted posts provided law enforcement with an easy-to-follow trail, allowing them to anticipate the couple’s next move and act swiftly. Once his location was discovered, a warrant was approved by the DEA to arrest him in Europe rather than his home of Costa Rica, “where extradition laws would have complicated proceedings.” According to The Sun, Grijalba had splurged on $20,000 worth of plane tickets to bring his family to Europe for the New Year. However, the trip was cut short when he was intercepted at a London airport and immediately taken into custody. Appearing in court the following day, he was hit with possible extradition to the United States, where he could face a long prison sentence. Costa Rica’s Attorney General, Carlo Díaz, acknowledged the significance of Grijalba’s capture, but admitted his office had no charges against him. “For us, it is also an important capture because we had not yet been able to attribute any criminal act to him in our country, but I repeat, he has been linked in some investigations to drug trafficking in Limón,” Díaz stated to the news. Grijalba remains in custody as his extradition battle unfolds. His wife has since erased her social media pages. More from VIBE.com Sign up for Vibe’s Newsletter. 18. Novo Nordisk’s Ozempic wins FDA approval for chronic kidney disease Novo Nordisk’s Ozempic wins FDA approval for chronic kidney disease The Food and Drug Administration on Tuesday approved Novo Nordisk’s Ozempic to treat chronic kidney disease in patients who also have Type 2 diabetes, expanding the use of the wildly popular injection in the U.S. The drug is already widely used and covered to treat Type 2 diabetes. The FDA’s decision means Ozempic can now be used to reduce the risk of kidney disease worsening, kidney failure, and death from cardiovascular disease in patients with both chronic kidney disease and diabetes. The decision could transform how doctors treat patients with chronic kidney disease, which involves a gradual loss of kidney function and is one of the leading causes of death in the U.S. Around 37 million American adults are living with chronic kidney disease, according to Novo Nordisk. Diabetes is a key risk factor for kidney disease. Roughly 40% of Type 2 diabetes patients have the condition, which can cause additional sickness such as increased risk of cardiovascular problems and death, Novo Nordisk said. “All chronic kidney disease is progressive. It’s a year-on-year, relentless decline in renal function,” Stephen Gough, Novo Nordisk’s global chief medical officer, said in an interview, referring to the kidney’s ability to filter waste from the blood. He noted that when the condition progresses to the point of kidney failure — also known as end-stage kidney disease — patients require long-term dialysis treatments to remove waste from the blood, or a kidney transplant. Both are burdensome, and death among patients with end-stage kidney disease is “very high,” particularly from cardiovascular disease, according to Gough. The approval also demonstrates that a blockbuster class of diabetes and weight loss drugs called GLP-1s have significant health benefits beyond regulating blood sugar and suppressing appetite. Ozempic reduced the risk of severe kidney outcomes — including kidney failure, reduction in kidney function, or death from kidney or heart causes — by 24% in diabetic patients with chronic kidney disease compared with a placebo, according to results of a late-stage trial that the approval was based on. In patients who took Ozempic, kidney function declined more slowly, the risk of major cardiovascular events such as heart attack dropped 18% and the risk of death from any cause fell 20% compared with the placebo. Ozempic also cut the risk of cardiovascular-related deaths by 29%. “We know that, unfortunately, cardiovascular disease and chronic kidney disease just go hand in hand,” Gough said. He added that the major treatments patients typically receive when they have the earliest signs of chronic kidney disease aim to reduce cardiovascular risk factors by paying attention to blood pressure. The rate of serious adverse side effects was 49.6% in patients who took Ozempic, lower than the 53.8% seen in the group that received a placebo. There was a slightly higher rate of discontinuations among Ozempic patients due to gastrointestinal side effects commonly seen with GLP-1s, such as nausea and vomiting. EU regulators approved Ozempic for the same use in December. Novo Nordisk ended the phase three trial in October, a year earlier than expected, in response to positive results. At the time, the Danish company’s announcement caused shares of kidney dialysis companies to plummet about 20% in a single day. The trial, called FLOW, started in 2019 and followed roughly 3,500 patients with diabetes and moderate to severe chronic kidney disease. “From my point of view as a doctor, you don’t get [diabetes, obesity, chronic kidney disease and cardiovascular disease] in isolation,” Gough said. “These illnesses, unfortunately, co-segregate. They cluster within the same individuals. So if you have a medicine that can target each of these co-morbidities in one injection, then you’re addressing what really matters to the patient.” The approval comes after the Biden administration selected three of Novo Nordisk’s drugs with the active ingredient semaglutide for the second cycle of Medicare drug price negotiations. That includes Ozempic, its weight loss counterpart Wegovy and another diabetes treatment called Rybelsus. The FDA’s decision also comes as Novo Nordisk faces increased competition from Eli Lilly and tries to win expanded insurance coverage for Wegovy. Last year, Wegovy won approval in the U.S. for use in slashing the risk of major cardiovascular events such as heart attacks and strokes. Novo Nordisk is also studying Wegovy as a potential treatment for fatty liver disease. Israel says Netanyahu invited to meet Trump at White House Israel says Netanyahu invited to meet Trump at White House Benjamin Netanyahu has been invited to meet US President Donald Trump at the White House next week, the Israeli prime minister’s office has said. The visit, yet to be confirmed by the Trump administration, is set to take place on 4 February. Netanyahu’s office said in a statement that the Israeli PM is the first foreign leader to be invited to the White House during Trump’s second term. 24. Despite GTA 6 Delay, Take-Two Rakes in Big Bucks From 3 Ultra-Famous Live Service Games Despite GTA 6 Delay, Take-Two Rakes in Big Bucks From 3 Ultra-Famous Live Service Games Recent rumors of Grand Theft Auto 6 (GTA 6) being delayed to 2026 might have caused fans to lose their hope for another year, but Take-Two Interactive is cruising along just fine. Why? Because even without its most anticipated title still in development, the company’s still making big bucks. The game is rumored to be delayed to next year or later. | Image Credit: Rockstar Games Titles like GTA 5, NBA 2K, and Red Dead Redemption 2 are all still thriving, bringing in piles of cash year after year. It seems like Rockstar has perfected the live service model. So, while the wait for one game continues, other live service games are keeping the company’s lights on and the profits rolling in. Take-Two Interactive raking in profits even without GTA 6 The company will be profitable despite the delay. | Image Credit: Rockstar Games’ Red Dead Redemption 2 Take-Two has seen impressive financial results, with good revenue growth and solid bookings in the past year. It looks like, despite the rumored absence of GTA 6 from the fiscal year 2025, the company is still going to have a very successful year. This is thanks in large part to the ongoing success of its other flagship games. GTA 5 continues to outperform expectations, largely due to the enduring popularity of GTA Online. It has evolved into a money-making machine, with regular updates and seasonal content keeping players engaged. Additionally, NBA 2K is still a major moneymaker for Take-Two, with the latest release selling nearly 4.5 million units and seeing a healthy increase in recurring consumer spending. This franchise has also become a staple (despite ups and downs), contributing to the company’s consistent financial growth. Lastly, Red Dead Redemption 2 and its online counterpart, Red Dead Online, may not generate as much attention as the other two, but the game still plays an important role in the revenue stream. These three games and their live service models show that Rockstar has mastered the ability to create games that not only launch successfully but also remain profitable for years. It is clear that even in the absence of a new major release like GTA 6, 2025 is going to be yet another profitable year for the company. The future of Take-Two Interactive looks brighter than ever The company doesn’t rely on one game’s success and has created a huge portfolio. | Image Credit: Rockstar Games Looking ahead, Take-Two has positioned itself for long-term success by slowly building a robust, ongoing business model that doesn’t fully rely on new game launches but on the continuous growth of its live service offerings. As Strauss Zelnick said in an interview with GamesIndustry, the company is focusing on maintaining a diverse portfolio of games that generate consistent revenue year after year. We’re building up our live services businesses. Mobile leads here at about 50% of our net bookings but we also have live services in NBA 2K, Red Dead Redemption, GTA 5. As we build those up, they effectively are a big title in and of themselves every year. The demand for games-as-a-service (GaaS) titles, which provide ongoing content updates and in-game purchases, is only growing. The company’s ability to successfully manage and grow these live service games positions it well for the future, even as the industry continues to evolve rapidly. As the company continues to build a more robust and diversified business model, it’s clear that Take-Two is not just relying on one game to drive profits, it has mastered the art of making every title in its portfolio a major success. In the end, while it’s a bummer that GTA 6 might be delayed to 2026 or later, it’s only a setback for players. Take-Two is already positioned to thrive in the years to come.
